In the summer of 1927, Sheriff William I. Traeger assisted in the establishment of the original San Dimas Sheriff’s Station to serve the fruit growers and poultry raisers in the eastern section of Los Angeles County. The first station consisted of a large frame house located on San Dimas Avenue near downtown.
On May 25, 1950, a new “modern” Sheriff’s station opened on the same site. On August 4, 1960, San Dimas became the 70th city to incorporate, and contracts with the Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department for law enforcement and fire services.
On September 23, 1987, the Walnut Sheriff’s Station opened in the City of Walnut (located approximately 8 miles S/W of San Dimas). The command of San Dimas Sheriff’s Station was then consolidated with that of Walnut Sheriff’s Station.
In 2006, San Dimas Sheriff’s Station opened a new station and it is currently under the command of Captain Don Slawson.

Game Recap: Baseball | 4/29/2025 1:20:00 AM | Marcus Dawal Jr
— Azusa Pacific baseball delivered a dramatic walk-off win to open Monday's doubleheader against No
but couldn't complete the sweep as the Sea Lions dominated game two to salvage the doubleheader split at the Cougar Baseball Complex
With one swing of the bat, Will Medina etched his name into Cougar lore, crushing a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift APU past nationally ranked Point Loma, 9–6.
Azusa Pacific (21-26) led 4–2 through five innings behind early offense, including solo home runs from Jacob Hayes and Elijah Cook, who each went deep to the left-center gap. Dominic Martinez added three hits and two RBI
while Cook and Hayes combined for four runs
After the Sea Lions plated four runs over the final four innings to take a 6–4 lead
Martinez tied the game with a two-run double before Medina's fireworks sealed the win
Despite 14 hits from Point Loma—including a three-hit game from Jake Schwartz and a pair of RBI doubles from Matt Bernath and Owen May—APU's timely defense and clutch hitting proved decisive
Game two saw a reversal of fortunes as Point Loma (33-13) erupted early and often
putting up 10 runs in the first two innings and cruising to an 11–0 shutout to end the nightcap
The Sea Lions pounded out 14 hits, including home runs from Aiden Arriaga and Tommy Molina, as part of a seven-run second inning that knocked out Cougar starter Blake Hagerty early
Luke Reece and Jake Entrekin each posted multi-hit games
with Reece driving in one and scoring twice
It struggled to generate offense, recording just two hits—singles from Will Medina and Jacob Freer—while Colin Driscoll tossed a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks for PLNU
the Cougars handed Point Loma their first loss since April 12 and will look to carry momentum into their final series of the regular season

Azusa Pacific will begin playing in the conference during the 2026-27 season and will become a full member by the 2028-29 season
the university announced it will bring back its football program
The team will take the field in the fall of 2026
coinciding with Whittier College—another SCIAC program—reinstating its program
This move came the week before Saint Francis University announced it was reclassifying from Division I to Division III
Part of the reason for that move was the evolving nature of college athletics with universities preparing for the final approval of the House vs
The terms of an approved settlement focus on Division I but the effects will be felt throughout the NCAA
Azusa Pacific University characterized this decision as a “strategic move [that] aligns with the university’s commitment to prioritizing the academic and athletic balance of its student-athletes

namely that Division II offers partial athletic scholarships
DIII athletes do not receive any scholarship money based on athletic ability
Azusa Pacific’s reclassification announcement does not include details about how or if the university plans to honor any athletic scholarships held by current student-athletes
Another major difference between the divisions is that Division I and II amust meet the eligibility requirements the NCAA sets
while Division III schools each set their own rules
There are further differences specifically for swimmers
The NCAA DII Championships are longer than the DIII Championships
and allow swimmers to race four individual events
There is no platform diving at either division’s NCAA Championships

Print Police praised the quick intervention of residents who reported seeing a man setting fire to a tree knocked down by winds
The arrest came a day after residents in a West Hills neighborhood detained a suspected arsonist
The Azusa Police Department this weekend arrested a homeless man suspected of setting a brush fire at a park located near the foothills
Police officers responded Friday at 11:37 p.m
to a report of a brush fire at Pioneer Park
Robert Landeros said two residents saw the fire
rushed over and saw a homeless man attempting to start another by trying to set fire to a tree that had been knocked down by the recent winds
“It doesn’t appear that they use physical force but verbally confronted him and called police,” he said
Arriving officers located the man and took him into custody on suspicion of arson while Los Angeles County firefighters put out the brush fire
Landeros identified the suspect as Jose Carranza-Escobar
a homeless man whose last known residence was in Azusa
Landeros didn’t say what the man used to start the fire
but he praised the quick intervention of the two residents and response from the local fire station
“We were lucky that the winds were calm last night,” he said
The arrest comes a day after residents in a West Hills neighborhood detained a suspected arsonist who they say was trying to start a fire as the Kenneth fire burned
according to the Los Angeles Police Department
Authorities identified the suspect as Juan Sierra, 33. Although he was booked on suspicion of a probation violation, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said Sierra is a “person of interest” in the Kenneth fire, which began Thursday afternoon near the county line.

Azusa Pacific University announced March 17 through an online press release that its collegiate athletics program is set to join the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SCIAC)
Occidental was one of the original founders of SCIAC in 1915
the league has gone through numerous changes
The most recent addition of Azusa Pacific will bring the number of full-time SCIAC schools to a total of 10
the move to SCIAC includes a reclassification of their NCAA division
Azusa Pacific competed in the NCAA Division II
Azusa Pacific will compete at the Division III level
According to Azusa Pacific’s press release
their move to SCIAC will come with the reinstatement of their football team
which was previously on a five-year hiatus due to budget reasons and the COVID-19 pandemic
released a statement on the revival of Azusa Pacific’s football program
“We are committed to building a football program that embodies the enduring values and principles of APU Athletics and DIII philosophy,” said Pine via website
“Our goal is to create a culture of excellence
where student-athletes are empowered to reach their God-given potential academically
We are excited to welcome talented and dedicated individuals who share this vision.”
With their 18-sport intercollegiate athletics program
Azusa Pacific will compete in various different SCIAC sports
Occidental men’s soccer captain Aiden Aley (junior) said he heard about Azusa Pacific’s upcoming addition to SCIAC along with the general public through an Instagram post
Women’s basketball players Ashley Shelsta (junior)
Dara Tokeshi (junior) and Ila Giblin (first year) all found out that Azusa Pacific would be joining the SCIAC through Instagram as well
Shelsta said she is curious about Azusa Pacific joining SCIAC
especially since their teams will be transitioning from higher-level play
curious to get to play them and see,” Shelsta said
and you know we welcome the competition and the challenge of a new team.”
which is about 20 miles east of Occidental’s campus
Occidental teams often travel to play SCIAC teams
and Tokeshi said she looks forward to playing on a new court
“I think it’ll be really cool to go to a different school
we’ve been here for three years already
so perhaps it’ll be cool to travel somewhere else
play somewhere different and have a new team come here,” Tokeshi said
Azusa Pacific will be integrated into conference scheduling in the 2026-2027 academic year
she already feels as if she knows the other teams and players in the conference pretty well
“I always think it’s really fun to learn about a new team,” Giblin said
There’s a new team and scouting-wise
everybody in the SCIAC kind of knows each other
Shelsta said the women’s basketball team is discussing what they think will happen to their season
women’s basketball plays every SCIAC team twice during the season
so it is unclear how Azusa Pacific will fit into their schedule
“Our schedule is already way over this year
and so I feel like adding a new conference team has to lessen our load on the other side,” Shelsta said
“But I think we should still play every conference team twice
because I feel like that’s important.”
Aley also said the men’s soccer team’s schedule will likely change due to the addition of a new SCIAC team
it is unclear when Azusa Pacific will begin their scheduled SCIAC games
but he is looking forward to the upcoming competition
