Everything that could go wrong pretty much did for the Mattituck/Greenport/Southold boys lacrosse team on Monday afternoon The Tuckers lost faceoffs — they lost possession — and they lost their mark on defense It all added up to a nine-goal halftime deficit as host Babylon recorded a 13-7 win in a Suffolk County Division II matchup “We didn’t show up,” said senior attacker Rocco Horton having to come out here on a Monday and get whupped,” senior midfielder Luke Weir said The game was a rematch of last year’s Class D county final Mattituck had visions of avenging that loss who won 80% of his faceoffs (16-of-20) against Trevor Fitzgerald and Weir and Henry Blair scored the first of his two goals connecting from close range past goalie Kyle Wieland 1:27 into the contest “I definitely thought we should win this game scoring that first goal off the bat,” senior goaltender Andrew McKenzie said “I thought that we were definitely going to stick with them the whole game … A lot of the games we’ve had slow starts Colin O’Brien equalized before adding a second tally at 4:26 The rest of the half was downhill for the visitors Dom Kuhnia scored from the right side at 7:44 Kai Jankow recorded the first of his game-high five goals at 11:29 Corey Dellafranca closed out the quarter with two goals within a 29-second span for a 6-1 lead “We just started sleeping on defense,” McKenzie said “We didn’t have any slides … That just messed us up.” Added head coach Jeff Hauser: “It’s tough You can only prepare so much and go over their tendencies Everything on paper kind of goes into the wind I could feel it coming off the bus when we were warming up.” who scored four consecutive goals as Babylon surged to a 10-1 halftime advantage Mattituck bounced back in the second half But we shouldn’t have to wake up,” Horton said “We’re a good team when we show up If we’re proactive instead of reactive “If we came out with a better mindset and a little more pep in our step and we played according to plan … I think the outcome of the game would have been a lot different,” added Weir Horton scored two goals in the third quarter who ran out of the goal area with the ball to midfield before spotting Horton so I have to make a play,” McKenzie said Justin Fox and Nate Steinfeld also scored for Mattituck McKenzie made 16 saves to run his county-best total to 172 “It’s no secret that Andrew is probably in the best Suffolk County lacrosse goalie,” Hauser said “But when our defense gives up two-yard shots I know that he was a little down on himself He definitely picked up in the second half.” After hosting Shoreham-Wading River on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., the Tuckers will visit Center Moriches on Monday which will determine whether they will reach the playoffs Babylon (3-0 against Class D teams) clinched the top seed Mattituck and Center Moriches are 1-1 apiece “That’s our win-or-go home game,” McKenzie said “We have to win that to make playoffs pretty much.” “We’re going to make sure that that game starts out differently,” Weir said “We cannot have this happening again.” who has turned around his tennis game with.. The Beginner’s Guide Source: EigenLayer Other chains like Solana and BNB Smart Chain have also begun integrating or enabling similar approaches BNB) to expand staking mechanisms in a more flexible way — aligning with the modular security demands of the next generation of Web3 infrastructure several major restaking projects have made notable progress: The restaking narrative rose to prominence in late 2023 through protocols like EigenLayer which introduced a novel idea: using staked assets (especially ETH) to secure additional services such as oracle networks This concept rapidly gained traction for several reasons: coupled with strategic venture capital backing made restaking the defining infrastructure narrative of that cycle Liquid Restaking Protocols’ TVL rise significantly in 2024 – Source: DeFiLlama and Modular Gaming have dominated early 2025 headlines and Babylon suggest a rekindling of interest in restaking infrastructure These new entrants reflect a maturation of the narrative Bitcoin) and broadening use cases beyond Ethereum whether restaking can reclaim its status as the top narrative remains uncertain restaking could once again move from narrative to necessity offering the backbone for the next phase of decentralized security infrastructure The rapid succession of restaking project listings on Binance has transformed what was once considered a “technical niche” into one of the most dominant investment narratives of Q2 2025 aiming to expand decentralized security for satellite chains in Web3 users restake to secure apps and earn MILK without losing one of the most powerful simple and open web rendering engines in the world web graphics and rendering hit the accelerator with the release of Babylon.js 8.0 Babylon.js 8.0 represents a year of new features optimizations and performance improvements aimed at helping you create more compelling interactive web experiences faster than ever Image-Based Lighting (IBL) is a computer graphics lighting technique that approximates environment lighting based on a source image Originating in the visual effects world as a way to blend computer-generated effects with real photography IBL has become a ubiquitous tool for computer graphics wizards around the world Babylon.js first introduced support for IBL over 8 years ago and it has quickly become one of the most commonly used features of the engine we are absolutely thrilled to announce that our good friends at Adobe leveled up IBL in Babylon by adding shadows to the mix now both light and shadows for the scene environment can be approximated from a source image Special shout out to Michael Bond at Adobe for his incredible work on this Check out a demo: https://aka.ms/babylon8IBLShadows Learn more: specify a 2D shape that emits light from it much like a large diffuse light that you might find on a movie set We can’t wait to see how you use this new light type to bring a new dimension to your scene Check out a demo: https://aka.ms/babylon8AreaLightsDemo Learn more here: https://aka.ms/babylon8AreaLightsDoc One of the most powerful new features in Babylon.js 8.0 is something we call the “Node Render Graph.” the specific rendering pipeline for Babylon has been a black box You tell Babylon what to render and it goes off and does it for you There have been observables that allow you to manipulate the result after completion of a render but the render process itself has been opaque With Babylon.js 8.0 you now have full control of the entire render pipeline This means that you can fully customize and control every part of the process of how your frames are rendered on the GPU you also now have a fancy new Node Graph tool to allow you to customize your own render pipeline without writing complex render process code Please note that the Node Render Graph is in Alpha for you to test and discover but should not be used in production yet as it is subject to change Try out end of the spectrum…those scenarios where you want to display a simple 3D object on a web page with zero complexity Introducing the all new Babylon.js Lightweight Viewer This new viewer is designed to harness the same rendering beauty and power of the full engine but comes in a smaller bundle footprint and uses dynamic imports and capabilities (audio or animation for example) depending on the model that is loaded It can be added to any web page with just a few lines of HTML and is also fully extensible this new Lightweight Viewer wouldn’t be complete without a super easy-to-use configurator along with it The Viewer Configurator is a simple tool that allows you to customize the Viewer to your exact specifications and give you the simple .html properties to set so it looks the same in your website Play with the Configurator (on desktop): https://aka.ms/babylon8ViewerConfig Check it out: https://aka.ms/babylon8viewerHome Learn more here: https://aka.ms/babylon8viewerDoc Babylon.js has had support for WebGPU since its inception have been written in GLSL (WebGL shading language) from the beginning Because WebGPU has its own shading language (WGSL) this posed a very interesting challenge How do you get GLSL shaders to render in WebGPU there is a conversion library that’s been available anyone wanting to target WebGPU with Babylon can leverage this library to convert the Babylon shaders into something WebGPU can use The downside of this is that this conversion library is over 3MB requiring users to double their download size for a standardBabylon.js project All of the core engine shaders for Babylon.js are now available in both GLSL and WGSL This means direct support for WebGPU right out of the box with no conversion layer essentially making Babylon.js 2x smaller when targeting WebGPU than in the past Check out a demo: https://aka.ms/babylon8WGSLDemo (try switching between WebGL2 and WebGPU) Learn more here: https://aka.ms/babylon8WGSLDoc Well, why stop at Yaqoub Beth-Addai is an Iraqi expert on militias active in the Nineveh Plains region and Mosul Part of a series: Militia Spotlight or see Part 1: How to Use Militia Spotlight An Iran-backed brigade led by a U.S.-designated human rights abuser is preparing to repeat its unfair practices and dominate local Christian voting in this year's general election and Kataib Babiliyoun is the 50th Brigade of the Iraqi state-funded Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) The 2021 vote saw the Babylon Movement secure four of the five parliamentary seats reserved for Christians a victory marred by allegations of electoral manipulation Kildani's success was largely due to votes from non-Christian constituents facilitated by his ties to Shia militias and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) This influx of non-Christian votes effectively marginalized authentic Christian voices in the political arena and is set to happen once again As previously reported, in March 2023 the Nineveh Plains Protection Units (NPU) were forcibly submerged into the Babylon Brigade Despite numerous NPU attempts to separate from the brigade the Iraqi government has ignored these pleas and backtracked on promises to comply with the NPU’s demands to be reinstated as an independent armed force With the NPU under his command and control Kildani has worked to undercut its independence and weaken its role in policing the Nineveh Plains.  Kildani recently ordered every NPU member to collect twenty-five voting cards from friends and relatives so they can be used to cast votes in favor of Kildani’s candidates Noncompliance resulted in threats of job termination or fines of approximately $66 per un-submitted card leading many Christian soldiers to consider resignation Reports also indicate that brigade members are compelled to engage with Kildani's social media content under threat of withholding salaries With many families dependent on their NPU pay though NPU commanders have thus far remained united in refusing the illegal order These coercive strategies are raising further concerns about the integrity of Christian representation in Iraq's parliament In addition to direct militia intimidation allegations have surfaced regarding the Kildani family’s operation of illicit establishments in Mosul further tarnishing Rayan's reputation.  Christian political groups submitted several demands to the Iraqi House of Representatives and Federal Supreme Court These included withdrawing militias from communities in the Nineveh Plains and amending the election law for the House of Representatives and provincial councils to ensure authentic representation for Christians Christian religious and community leaders have been discussing the possibility of an electoral boycott Without significant reforms and safeguards there is a growing fear that the 2025 election will once again see the hijacking of Christian seats by individuals and groups that do not genuinely represent the community's interests Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced initiatives aimed at bolstering the Christian presence in local police forces and promoting new construction developments in the Nineveh Plains Although these measures are a step in the right direction many community leaders argue that they fall short of addressing the systemic problems The pervasive influence of militias loyal to external actors continues to undermine genuine efforts toward stability and representation for Iraq's Christian minorities The Washington Institute seeks to advance a balanced and realistic understanding of American interests in the Middle East and to promote the policies that secure them The Institute is a 501(c)3 organization; all donations are tax-deductible We use cookies to make sure we give you the best experience possible. Paramount Pictures It’s been four years since we’ve seen a film from director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash and his long-awaited return isn’t all it should’ve been following the rise and fall of its protagonists The film follows Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) and Manny Torres (Diego Calva) as they navigate early Hollywood in 1920s Los Angeles and try to get their foot in the door of the film industry (L-R) Margot Robbie & Diego Calva in Babylon courtesy of Paramount Pictures we’re instantly drawn into the story of the two protagonists and Chazelle’s work on paper and behind the camera makes us care about what happens to them The film’s opening sequence slightly disconnects the audience from what’s to follow but certainly sets up the tone of the following sequences perfectly The sheer scale and madness of the first extended sequence are breathtaking yet exhilarating and tiring The film seems to lack purpose and feels unguided until the introduction of Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) instantly adding urgency and creating relatable dynamics in the story Robbie shines in what may be her best on screen lighting up the screen and demonstrating the full range of her talents Her chemistry with co-lead Diego Calva radiates off the screen and many of their scenes are truly enjoyable to watch The rest of the supporting cast is introduced particularly well with specific performances standing out more than others Li Jun Li’s mysterious Lady Fay Zhu comes into the film with one of the most unforgettable musical performances in the history of film and continues to be a great addition to the supporting cast Pitt’s performance in Babylon is genuinely forgettable and is not a good addition to his filmography While it is written in the script that Jack Conrad (Pitt) is a bad actor the character’s arc doesn’t land particularly well and the emotions you intend to feel for him aren’t there The other notable supporting additions throughout the film are Elinor St with the latter actor being off-the-rails crazy in somewhat of a questionable decision in the film’s script bringing us into the hectic world of filmmaking and setting up the rest of the film which unfortunately fails to live up to its opening well-shot fever dream filled with great performances with the clear standout being Margot Robbie it feels like a good time to address the incredible score from composer Justin Hurwitz (La La Land Take this from someone who really doesn’t enjoy jazz Hurwitz’s score is the true driving heart of the film providing urgency with his chaotically arranged pieces like “Voodoo Mama” and “Coke Room” while demonstrating his expansive use of instrumentation and ballads with tracks like “Manny and Nellie’s Theme.” I’d hate to give away the genius of the film’s score too soon so keep your eyes peeled for an in-depth look into its genius and madness and how Hurwitz uses repetitive motifs to display varying emotions and tones (L-R) Jean Smart & Brad Pitt in Babylon courtesy of Paramount Pictures The film starts to veer off of the track as it closes out its first act with this becoming more prominent as the film plays out As we sit through the film’s excessive 3+ hour runtime we watch Chazelle’s screenplay become unhinged and unfocused and it feels like Chazelle has run out of things to say That’s not to say that there aren’t profound moments of dialogue such as the phenomenally-delivered monologue from Jean Smart in the film’s third act that might be one of the only good moments from the film’s latter half The script leans away from the titular theme of “Babylon,” a place that defined itself as the capital of an empire and leans into the coked-up creation you wouldn’t expect from a director like Chazelle ending points in the film throughout its second half The film takes wild turns and makes incredibly bold decisions with some working and some leaving viewers questioning what they just witnessed the film does the boldest thing it can and goes incredibly meta resulting in a sequence that confuses viewers while emotionally tying the story together Babylon overindulges and pushes itself too far The film boasts a fantastic first half but quickly runs out of things to say and stutters until it crafts an ending that leaves viewers questioning what they just witnessed Catch Babylon exclusively in theaters today Her current research focuses on the cultural legacy of the Weimar Republic the period after the First World War when Germany was governed as a constitutional democracy for the first time in its history This was brought to an end by the rise to power of the Nazi Party under Adolf Hitler in 1933 It's a subject Smith also visits in her upcoming book The Afterlives of Weimar Berlin: Twenty-First-Century Literature due to be published by Camden House / Boydell & Brewer at the end of 2024 keen to check out the television series Babylon Berlin when it first appeared in 2017 “I was very excited to see a large-scale cinematic production on streaming television that focused on the Weimar Republic.” It’s a period of German history that has been somewhat neglected in popular media Set during the latter years of the Republic Babylon Berlin is a German-made “neo-noir” television series focusing on the exploits of  police inspector Gereon Rath and an amateur detective who also happens to be a woman “I was especially excited because the show’s main character is a type of woman that I've written about since I started my academic career,” added Smith Charlotte (Lotte) Ritter is a police clerk and aspiring detective at the start of the series engaging in sex work at night to support her impoverished family Ritter’s character really holds a mirror up to the many aspects that encompass Weimar Germany “The country could have gone in any direction—could have become a communist state could have lapsed into another type of authoritarian regime—but Germany became democratic for thirteen years The show also explores another notable aspect of the Weimar Republic namely the flowering of cultural expression whose research interests focus on gender and sexuality in German film and media “This was the first place that saw serious efforts at queer emancipation both in print and in visual culture more broadly We saw the artistic development of a queer community there and I think that's a huge part of the appeal of the show to modern audiences,” she added Baer and Smith sought to explore Babylon Berlin’s unique contribution to contemporary visual culture when putting together the book “was to have an interdisciplinary set of fields represented in the book The show is so rich in its many dimensions that we really wanted to bring experts on different areas together to write in more specificity and detail about those topics.” The book includes essays from scholars of Jewish Germany A Guest SpeakerImmediately following Smith and Baer’s book launch was an event featuring one of the three creators of the Babylon Berlin series Berlin-based film director Henk Handloegten came to campus on September 12 to lead a screening and discussion of select scenes from the fourth season of the show “We were struck by what Handloegten had to say about the show’s commitment to emotional realism,” said Baer meaning “how the show aimed to present the historical reality of characters in the 1920s but in a way that would resonate emotionally with audiences of today The example he gave was the music they used in the series which often had a contemporary edge and so could be quite different from the sounds of the 1920s,” she explained “While the makers of the show were careful to try to maintain historical accuracy regarding the depiction of political and legal issues I think in terms of the broader artistic context—the acting styles and the soundtrack for example—there was much more of a ‘mash-up’ aesthetic mixing the old and the new,” added Baer Handloegten’s visit was sponsored by the Departments of Art History and the German Embassy’s “Germany on Campus” Initiative VICTORIA, Seychelles, April 09, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MEXC, a leading Feature) – Yesterday I interviewed a refugee Ukrainian family in transition from their homeland looking for a permanent place to settle They were being visited by evangelical church friends Since I was teaching a course on current world conflicts the conversation turned to Palestine/Israel where a number of references were made to Babylon and Jeremiah.  the Lord will now do everything that he has decided/He will punish Babylon’s people as he said he would do/you people of Babylon who live beside many rivers/it is now time for you to die…..”.(Jeremiah 50:1-51) evangelists view all forms of “wickedness and evil” in the world as symbolized by “Babylon” America is a modern version of Babylon. But how is it that Babylon became associated with confusion yet was known in classical times as being accepting of many languages and customs?  Babylonian references are widespread among the 24% of American adults who consider themselves evangelical.  The negative references are not related to Hammurabi of Babylon who provided a “code of laws” who conquered Babylon and allowed the Jewish captives to return to Jerusalem; His story was chronicled by Xenophon in the Cyropaedia a leader in the Achaemenid Empire who defeated the Neo-Babylonian Empire in 539 BC Aramaic became the official language of the Persian empire and its official religion was Zoroastrianism Cyrus’s enlightened policy put an end to the Assyro-Babylonian practice of deporting conquered peoples and trying to destroy all local nationalisms.” According to the Israeli historian Shlomo Sand much of the Bible was composed in Jerusalem in the 5th century BC following  the return from the “Babylonian captivity” Those who composed the Books of the Bible amplified ancient battles in order to magnify the power of their monotheistic God Relatively small battles became exaggerated into massacres for the purpose of impressing the listener or reader to the power wielded by Yahweh.  After having a discussion with my class concerning Babylon a story associated with classical Greece in the 5th century BCE Plato’s description of the cave was an analogy depicting two versions of reality In the shadowy recesses of the cave people were shackled to benches while images floated by projected by a priesthood displaying images of deities while pacing behind a fire that cast images on a wall in front of the shackled spectators but periodically one viewer made the decision to unshackle themselves and exit the cave to encounter the sun of truth.  I posed a question to the class: “Are there opportunities for all the cave dwellers to unshackle themselves?” The philosopher whose book “The Essence of Truth” considered the unshackling the most important part of the myth They became absorbed by the implications of this story and how it could apply to those who supported the conventional “history” espoused by evangelicals and the cynically disposed Israelis and Americans who were complicit in the genocide taking place in daily images;  the virtual reality of destruction transmitted throughout the world by the technical wizardry of modern media Plato’s (and Heidegger’s) explanation of those shackled in the cave was that they ceased to see what is taking place and are bound by their biases and beliefs to the “unhidden” nature of reality Dissociation and a dulling of moral sensibilities are the lot of those shackled to benches in the cave which can be compared to the  Israeli activists and intellectuals who exit the shadow world of the cave and become Illuminated by the sun of truth.  Are those dwelling in the cave bound by biblical beliefs or deliberately ignoring the massacres taking place in Gaza The Amalekites in Exodus were massacred as a reprisal for an attack against Israelites after crossing the Red Sea?  Yahweh “vowed to blot them out from under heaven” thus becoming a primal source for the justification of genocide by the more militant members of Israeli society who compared Amalekites to modern Palestinians A question addressed was: do “mythic histories” provide reasons for tribal vengeance and on-going genocide?  Our class discussed these questions and the disjunction between two truths one dealing with light emanating from the sun of truth and the other portraying the darkest aspects of biblical passages relating to mythic history The result portrays a nation incarcerated in a cave of mistruths and misinformation still shackled to hallucinatory images and unwilling to accept the consequences of the massacres that have been taking place in their name; Nor have they been able to empathize with the calamitous nature of the suffering caused by the deliberate bombing of women and children; Nor are they ready to atone for the moral shame causing generational traumas to the 16,000 children slaughtered by bombs provided by America Such moral catastrophes will have to be confronted in the times to come since they have not yet become crystallized except to those who have exited the cave of shadowy images and confronted “the essence of truth.” Filed Under: Featured, Israel/ Palestine, US Foreign Policy Hugh J. This kind of coercion represents a deeply disturbing trend that the Biden-Harris administration has already engaged in and it is a blatant violation of the First Amendment’s protection against government censorship As a satirical news website that focuses on religious and political news The Babylon Bee would be forced to censor itself and/or place disclaimers on nearly all its stories under these laws which would ruin the jokes it is trying to make is an attorney in Los Angeles who regularly engages in political expression with the public She would like to continue sharing political memes with her large social media following but these laws threaten to punish her for doing so California’s new laws follow on the heels of more censorship that has taken place across the globe in recent months Officials in countries around the world have often used “misinformation” as an excuse to silence speech they dislike In Brazil, for example, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes recently suspended X nationwide because he claimed the platform presented a “real danger” of “negatively influencing the electorate in 2024 with the aim of unbalancing the electoral result based on hate campaigns in the digital age The idea of banning a large social media platform because it could lead to an election outcome that government actors dislike should be outrageous to all Americans who understand the First Amendment But the truth is that California’s laws are not a far cry from what is happening in Brazil laws like California’s that censor political speech could lead to the same censorship that Brazil is experiencing That is why it’s a bad idea to censor political speech in the name of “protecting democracy.” While stopping political lies is a noble goal allowing government officials to decide what is or isn’t true is not the way to achieve it And if we let officials decide who can or cannot make fun of them both humor and robust political debate will fall by the wayside ADF attorneys filed a lawsuit on behalf of The Babylon Bee and Kelly Chang Rickert challenging California’s unconstitutional laws because we understand that free speech is a core tenet of our liberty in the United States The way to combat lies and “misinformation” is to promote more Because AB 2839—the law prohibiting people from posting “materially deceptive content” during election time—went into effect immediately we asked a federal district court to put the law on hold Less than a month after we filed our lawsuit another district court ruled in a related case that AB 2839 likely violates the First Amendment California officials agreed they cannot enforce the law against The Babylon Bee or Rickert ADF is the world's largest legal organizationcommitted to protecting religious freedom, free speech © 2025 Alliance Defending Freedom is a registered 501(C)(3) Charity. All rights reserved 2025 at 1:22 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Mobile beach permits for Town of Babylon beaches are now on sale but beach lovers can start getting ready for summer fun now that Town of Babylon mobile beach permits are on sale active military and active Town of Babylon fire department members Last summer, town officials announced a new mobile beach permit system aiming to reduce long waits and improve beach accessibility.
