Everything that could go wrong pretty much did for the Mattituck/Greenport/Southold boys lacrosse team on Monday afternoon
The Tuckers lost faceoffs — they lost possession — and they lost their mark on defense
It all added up to a nine-goal halftime deficit as host Babylon recorded a 13-7 win in a Suffolk County Division II matchup
“We didn’t show up,” said senior attacker Rocco Horton
having to come out here on a Monday and get whupped,” senior midfielder Luke Weir said
The game was a rematch of last year’s Class D county final
Mattituck had visions of avenging that loss
who won 80% of his faceoffs (16-of-20) against Trevor Fitzgerald and Weir
and Henry Blair scored the first of his two goals
connecting from close range past goalie Kyle Wieland 1:27 into the contest
“I definitely thought we should win this game scoring that first goal off the bat,” senior goaltender Andrew McKenzie said
“I thought that we were definitely going to stick with them the whole game
… A lot of the games we’ve had slow starts
Colin O’Brien equalized before adding a second tally at 4:26
The rest of the half was downhill for the visitors
Dom Kuhnia scored from the right side at 7:44
Kai Jankow recorded the first of his game-high five goals at 11:29
Corey Dellafranca closed out the quarter with two goals within a 29-second span for a 6-1 lead
“We just started sleeping on defense,” McKenzie said
“We didn’t have any slides … That just messed us up.”
Added head coach Jeff Hauser: “It’s tough
You can only prepare so much and go over their tendencies
Everything on paper kind of goes into the wind
I could feel it coming off the bus when we were warming up.”
who scored four consecutive goals as Babylon surged to a 10-1 halftime advantage
Mattituck bounced back in the second half
But we shouldn’t have to wake up,” Horton said
“We’re a good team when we show up
If we’re proactive instead of reactive
“If we came out with a better mindset and a little more pep in our step
and we played according to plan … I think the outcome of the game would have been a lot different,” added Weir
Horton scored two goals in the third quarter
who ran out of the goal area with the ball to midfield before spotting Horton
so I have to make a play,” McKenzie said
Justin Fox and Nate Steinfeld also scored for Mattituck
McKenzie made 16 saves to run his county-best total to 172
“It’s no secret that Andrew is probably in the best Suffolk County lacrosse goalie,” Hauser said
“But when our defense gives up two-yard shots
I know that he was a little down on himself
He definitely picked up in the second half.”
After hosting Shoreham-Wading River on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., the Tuckers will visit Center Moriches on Monday
which will determine whether they will reach the playoffs
Babylon (3-0 against Class D teams) clinched the top seed
Mattituck and Center Moriches are 1-1 apiece
“That’s our win-or-go home game,” McKenzie said
“We have to win that to make playoffs pretty much.”
“We’re going to make sure that that game starts out differently,” Weir said
“We cannot have this happening again.”

When Anthony Pagliuca takes the pitching mound Sunday
coaches and doctors didn’t know if he would survive a September car crash — let alone throw a baseball
as "on the brink of death" after he was pulled from the wreckage of a car crash that killed two of his friends in West Babylon
He was flown to Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park and stayed there for two months
undergoing multiple surgeries for traumatic brain injury
Through rehab to regain his strength and memory
Anthony’s in South Huntington in December to resume classes and rejoin the baseball team last month as a relief pitcher
"His recovery is nothing shy of a miracle," said Dr

Anthony was riding in the back of a Kia Seltos with four other teens just after 1 a.m. Sept. 21, when their car was struck by another driver who ran a red light in West Babylon. The crash critically injured Anthony and killed the driver of the Kia, Bella Trezza
the other driver of another Kia who police said ran the red light at Great East Neck Road and Railroad Avenue
Sunday will mark what Anthony worked for — recovering and going on to be a starting pitcher for the St
Anthony's Friars against his hometown team at West Babylon High School in a game where he will also pay tribute to his friends lost in the crash that rocked the West Babylon community
He’ll be joined on the field with his two friends who survived the crash
Jack Murphy and Bella’s brother Austin Trezza
who will carry photos of Riley and Bella to the mound
"It's not really about winning or losing
just enjoying the moment and being with everyone," Anthony said before throwing with his team Wednesday during a game at St

Keri Pagliuca credited her son’s doctors with saving his life
Anthony still doesn’t remember anything about the crash or that night
his family had to tell him that his friends died in the crash
"The fact that any of them survived the crash is unbelievable," Keri Pagliuca said
he’s here and he’s going to prom and graduate
There are so many what-ifs replaying in your mind and I tell him you’re here for a reason
and you have to do your best for Bella and Riley."
Anthony sat on the bench joking with friends before the game started Wednesday
stronger and looking forward to going to SUNY Oneonta to study sports management
His coaches and his teammates visited him every day during his recovery and rehab in New Jersey to ensure he "always had a friar" teammate in his room
Anthony's Baseball Coach Paul Parsolano said
Sunday’s game will allow the West Babylon community to remember those lost in the crash and begin healing
"Anthony is a walking miracle and so lucky and blessed he’s still here with us and he has an opportunity to play baseball," Naccari said
and this is God’s work in real life."

Restaking is re-emerging as a dominant crypto narrative in Q2 2025
marked by high-profile listings on Binance including KernelDAO (BNB Chain)
Binance is clearly prioritizing the restaking narrative
as evidenced by three consecutive listings within two weeks and additional support via alternative fundraising methods like the Wallet Initial Offering (WIO)
Restaking is transitioning from a niche technical concept to a foundational infrastructure layer in Web3
Following the listings of several restaking projects
one question emerges: Is “restaking” becoming the next dominant narrative in the crypto market
Restaking is a mechanism that allows users to reuse staked assets (typically ETH) to secure other networks or applications without having to withdraw those assets from the original staking platform
This represents a major breakthrough in capital efficiency within blockchain ecosystems
as it enables a single pool of assets to be utilized for multiple security purposes
fostering the growth of new infrastructure layers without compromising the integrity of the base network
This mechanism significantly lowers the security barrier for new projects
launching a new blockchain or appchain meant securing a dedicated validator set and sourcing new staking capital
projects can “rent” security from already-staked tokens on Ethereum or compatible chains
thereby reducing time-to-launch and boosting early-stage trust
The concept of restaking was pioneered by EigenLayer
a project widely expected to become the secondary security pillar of Ethereum
EigenLayer allows users to restake ETH already secured on Ethereum to provide security for auxiliary modules such as oracles
EigenLayer focused on enabling developers to build plug-and-play security modules
but this has evolved into an entire ecosystem dubbed “Restaking-as-a-Service.”

Source: EigenLayer
Other chains like Solana and BNB Smart Chain have also begun integrating or enabling similar approaches
BNB) to expand staking mechanisms in a more flexible way — aligning with the modular security demands of the next generation of Web3 infrastructure
several major restaking projects have made notable progress:
The restaking narrative rose to prominence in late 2023 through protocols like EigenLayer
which introduced a novel idea: using staked assets (especially ETH) to secure additional services such as oracle networks
This concept rapidly gained traction for several reasons:
coupled with strategic venture capital backing
made restaking the defining infrastructure narrative of that cycle
Liquid Restaking Protocols’ TVL rise significantly in 2024 – Source: DeFiLlama
and Modular Gaming have dominated early 2025 headlines
and Babylon suggest a rekindling of interest in restaking infrastructure
These new entrants reflect a maturation of the narrative
Bitcoin) and broadening use cases beyond Ethereum
whether restaking can reclaim its status as the top narrative remains uncertain
restaking could once again move from narrative to necessity
offering the backbone for the next phase of decentralized security infrastructure
The rapid succession of restaking project listings on Binance has transformed what was once considered a “technical niche” into one of the most dominant investment narratives of Q2 2025
aiming to expand decentralized security for satellite chains in Web3
users restake to secure apps and earn MILK without losing liquidity
The MILK token launched via Binance Wallet through a Wallet Initial Offering (WIO) on April 29, 2025
This isn’t just a new decentralized fundraising model
It’s also a strong signal that Binance is giving MilkyWay special attention
similar to its support of KernelDAO and Babylon
Learn more: Milkyway Price Prediction
MilkyWay uses a multi-layered architecture to enable cross-chain staking between Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain
This not only extends its security base but also enhances compatibility with DeFi projects across both ecosystems
Unlike Puffer Finance (PUFFER) and Swell (SWELL)
MilkyWay may benefit from a light FDV strategy
MilkyWay keeps valuation conservative and grows TVL steadily to support healthy post-listing performance
show Binance backs the restaking narrative
becoming a key pillar of the Web3 ecosystem
MilkyWay is likely the next piece in this growing trend
and Binance ties to gauge MILK’s medium-term potential
it’s becoming a reality – validated by the market itself

web graphics and rendering hit the accelerator with the release of Babylon.js 8.0
Babylon.js 8.0 represents a year of new features
optimizations and performance improvements aimed at helping you create more compelling
interactive web experiences faster than ever
Image-Based Lighting (IBL) is a computer graphics lighting technique that approximates environment lighting based on a source image
Originating in the visual effects world as a way to blend computer-generated effects with real photography
IBL has become a ubiquitous tool for computer graphics wizards around the world
Babylon.js first introduced support for IBL over 8 years ago and it has quickly become one of the most commonly used features of the engine
we are absolutely thrilled to announce that our good friends at Adobe leveled up IBL in Babylon by adding shadows to the mix
now both light and shadows for the scene environment can be approximated from a source image
Special shout out to Michael Bond at Adobe for his incredible work on this

We are thrilled to announce that Babylon.js 8.0 brings a frequently requested feature…Area Lights
This amazing new addition to the lighting palette allows you to specify a 2D shape that emits light from it
much like a large diffuse light that you might find on a movie set
We can’t wait to see how you use this new light type to bring a new dimension to your scene

One of the most powerful new features in Babylon.js 8.0 is something we call the “Node Render Graph.”
the specific rendering pipeline for Babylon has been a black box
You tell Babylon what to render and it goes off and does it for you
There have been observables that allow you to manipulate the result after completion of a render
but the render process itself has been opaque
With Babylon.js 8.0 you now have full control of the entire render pipeline
This means that you can fully customize and control every part of the process of how your frames are rendered on the GPU
you also now have a fancy new Node Graph tool to allow you to customize your own render pipeline
without writing complex render process code
Please note that the Node Render Graph is in Alpha for you to test and discover but should not be used in production yet as it is subject to change

Babylon.js is a powerful tool used by tens of thousands of people and organizations across the globe to bring complex visual ideas to life on the web
Babylon.js 8.0 unlocks a new super-powered tool for the other end of the spectrum…those scenarios where you want to display a simple 3D object on a web page with zero complexity
Introducing the all new Babylon.js Lightweight Viewer
This new viewer is designed to harness the same rendering beauty and power of the full engine but comes in a smaller bundle footprint and uses dynamic imports and capabilities (audio or animation for example) depending on the model that is loaded
It can be added to any web page with just a few lines of HTML and is also fully extensible
this new Lightweight Viewer wouldn’t be complete without a super easy-to-use configurator along with it
The Viewer Configurator is a simple tool that allows you to customize the Viewer to your exact specifications and give you the simple .html properties to set so it looks the same in your website
Play with the Configurator (on desktop): https://aka.ms/babylon8ViewerConfig
Check it out: https://aka.ms/babylon8viewerHome

Babylon.js has had support for WebGPU since its inception
have been written in GLSL (WebGL shading language) from the beginning
Because WebGPU has its own shading language (WGSL) this posed a very interesting challenge
How do you get GLSL shaders to render in WebGPU
there is a conversion library that’s been available
anyone wanting to target WebGPU with Babylon can leverage this library to convert the Babylon shaders into something WebGPU can use
The downside of this is that this conversion library is over 3MB
requiring users to double their download size for a standardBabylon.js project
All of the core engine shaders for Babylon.js are now available in both GLSL and WGSL
This means direct support for WebGPU right out of the box with no conversion layer
essentially making Babylon.js 2x smaller when targeting WebGPU than in the past
Check out a demo: https://aka.ms/babylon8WGSLDemo (try switching between WebGL2 and WebGPU)
Learn more here: https://aka.ms/babylon8WGSLDoc
Well, why stop at core engine shaders? Why not unlock the ability to create custom WGSL shaders using Babylon’s Node Material Editor as well
Check out a demo (on desktop): https://aka.ms/babylon8nmeWGSL
Learn more here: https://aka.ms/babylon8nmeWGSLDoc
Those are just some of the main features of Babylon.js 8.0

Albion is an essayistic meditation on what it means to be native to a land
Dalia Al-Dujaili examines her personal relationship to the physical landscapes of Iraq
religion and mythology to construct a work that feels at once both deeply personal and also captures the existential questions that generations of immigrant children grapple with: where is my home
Albion is undergirded by rigorous research
although it does at times feel like a premature work
Al-Dujaili invokes the seasons of her personal life
but there is a sense that this might have been a deeper work with the twin gifts of experience and retrospect
and she brings a variety of landscapes to life
The most poignant descriptions are the intimate moments between Al-Dujaili and her parents
Al-Dujaili describes her family’s garden as a ‘little Eden here in Surrey’s suburbia’ where her mother has miraculously nurtured an Iraqi fig tree into existence from a small cutting
She does this because it ‘reminds me of home’ in Iraq
many profound ways in which home is preserved and reconstructed in foreign lands

Part of a series: Militia Spotlight
or see Part 1: How to Use Militia Spotlight
An Iran-backed brigade led by a U.S.-designated human rights abuser is preparing to repeat its unfair practices and dominate local Christian voting in this year's general election
and Kataib Babiliyoun is the 50th Brigade of the Iraqi state-funded Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF)
The 2021 vote saw the Babylon Movement secure four of the five parliamentary seats reserved for Christians
a victory marred by allegations of electoral manipulation
Kildani's success was largely due to votes from non-Christian constituents
facilitated by his ties to Shia militias and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)
This influx of non-Christian votes effectively marginalized authentic Christian voices in the political arena and is set to happen once again
As previously reported, in March 2023 the Nineveh Plains Protection Units (NPU) were forcibly submerged into the Babylon Brigade
Despite numerous NPU attempts to separate from the brigade
the Iraqi government has ignored these pleas and backtracked on promises to comply with the NPU’s demands to be reinstated as an independent armed force
With the NPU under his command and control
Kildani has worked to undercut its independence and weaken its role in policing the Nineveh Plains.
Kildani recently ordered every NPU member to collect twenty-five voting cards from friends and relatives so they can be used to cast votes in favor of Kildani’s candidates
Noncompliance resulted in threats of job termination or fines of approximately $66 per un-submitted card
leading many Christian soldiers to consider resignation
Reports also indicate that brigade members are compelled to engage with Kildani's social media content under threat of withholding salaries
With many families dependent on their NPU pay
though NPU commanders have thus far remained united in refusing the illegal order
These coercive strategies are raising further concerns about the integrity of Christian representation in Iraq's parliament
In addition to direct militia intimidation
allegations have surfaced regarding the Kildani family’s operation of illicit establishments in Mosul
further tarnishing Rayan's reputation.
Christian political groups submitted several demands to the Iraqi House of Representatives and Federal Supreme Court
These included withdrawing militias from communities in the Nineveh Plains and amending the election law for the House of Representatives and provincial councils to ensure authentic representation for Christians
Christian religious and community leaders have been discussing the possibility of an electoral boycott
Without significant reforms and safeguards
there is a growing fear that the 2025 election will once again see the hijacking of Christian seats by individuals and groups that do not genuinely represent the community's interests
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced initiatives aimed at bolstering the Christian presence in local police forces and promoting new construction developments in the Nineveh Plains
Although these measures are a step in the right direction
many community leaders argue that they fall short of addressing the systemic problems
The pervasive influence of militias loyal to external actors continues to undermine genuine efforts toward stability and representation for Iraq's Christian minorities

Margot Robbie in Babylon courtesy of Paramount Pictures
It’s been four years since we’ve seen a film from director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash
and his long-awaited return isn’t all it should’ve been
following the rise and fall of its protagonists
The film follows Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) and Manny Torres (Diego Calva) as they navigate early Hollywood in 1920s Los Angeles and try to get their foot in the door of the film industry
(L-R) Margot Robbie & Diego Calva in Babylon courtesy of Paramount Pictures
we’re instantly drawn into the story of the two protagonists
and Chazelle’s work on paper and behind the camera makes us care about what happens to them
The film’s opening sequence slightly disconnects the audience from what’s to follow but certainly sets up the tone of the following sequences perfectly
The sheer scale and madness of the first extended sequence are breathtaking yet exhilarating and tiring
The film seems to lack purpose and feels unguided until the introduction of Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie)
instantly adding urgency and creating relatable dynamics in the story
Robbie shines in what may be her best on screen
lighting up the screen and demonstrating the full range of her talents
Her chemistry with co-lead Diego Calva radiates off the screen
and many of their scenes are truly enjoyable to watch
The rest of the supporting cast is introduced particularly well
with specific performances standing out more than others
Li Jun Li’s mysterious Lady Fay Zhu comes into the film with one of the most unforgettable musical performances in the history of film and continues to be a great addition to the supporting cast
Pitt’s performance in Babylon is genuinely forgettable and is not a good addition to his filmography
While it is written in the script that Jack Conrad (Pitt) is a bad actor
the character’s arc doesn’t land particularly well
and the emotions you intend to feel for him aren’t there
The other notable supporting additions throughout the film are Elinor St
with the latter actor being off-the-rails crazy in somewhat of a questionable decision in the film’s script
bringing us into the hectic world of filmmaking and setting up the rest of the film
which unfortunately fails to live up to its opening
well-shot fever dream filled with great performances
with the clear standout being Margot Robbie
it feels like a good time to address the incredible score from composer Justin Hurwitz (La La Land
Take this from someone who really doesn’t enjoy jazz
Hurwitz’s score is the true driving heart of the film
providing urgency with his chaotically arranged pieces like “Voodoo Mama” and “Coke Room” while demonstrating his expansive use of instrumentation and ballads with tracks like “Manny and Nellie’s Theme.” I’d hate to give away the genius of the film’s score too soon
so keep your eyes peeled for an in-depth look into its genius and madness and how Hurwitz uses repetitive motifs to display varying emotions and tones
(L-R) Jean Smart & Brad Pitt in Babylon courtesy of Paramount Pictures
The film starts to veer off of the track as it closes out its first act
with this becoming more prominent as the film plays out
As we sit through the film’s excessive 3+ hour runtime
we watch Chazelle’s screenplay become unhinged and unfocused
and it feels like Chazelle has run out of things to say
That’s not to say that there aren’t profound moments of dialogue
such as the phenomenally-delivered monologue from Jean Smart in the film’s third act
that might be one of the only good moments from the film’s latter half
The script leans away from the titular theme of “Babylon,” a place that defined itself as the capital of an empire
and leans into the coked-up creation you wouldn’t expect from a director like Chazelle
ending points in the film throughout its second half
The film takes wild turns and makes incredibly bold decisions
with some working and some leaving viewers questioning what they just witnessed
the film does the boldest thing it can and goes incredibly meta
resulting in a sequence that confuses viewers while emotionally tying the story together
Babylon overindulges and pushes itself too far
The film boasts a fantastic first half but quickly runs out of things to say and stutters until it crafts an ending that leaves viewers questioning what they just witnessed

Her current research focuses on the cultural legacy of the Weimar Republic
the period after the First World War when Germany was governed as a constitutional democracy for the first time in its history
This was brought to an end by the rise to power of the Nazi Party under Adolf Hitler in 1933
It's a subject Smith also visits in her upcoming book
The Afterlives of Weimar Berlin: Twenty-First-Century Literature
due to be published by Camden House / Boydell & Brewer at the end of 2024
keen to check out the television series Babylon Berlin when it first appeared in 2017
“I was very excited to see a large-scale cinematic production on streaming television that focused on the Weimar Republic.”
It’s a period of German history that has been somewhat neglected in popular media
Set during the latter years of the Republic
Babylon Berlin is a German-made “neo-noir” television series focusing on the exploits of police inspector Gereon Rath
and an amateur detective who also happens to be a woman
“I was especially excited because the show’s main character is a type of woman that I've written about since I started my academic career,” added Smith
Charlotte (Lotte) Ritter is a police clerk and aspiring detective at the start of the series
engaging in sex work at night to support her impoverished family
Ritter’s character really holds a mirror up to the many aspects that encompass Weimar Germany
“The country could have gone in any direction—could have become a communist state
could have lapsed into another type of authoritarian regime—but Germany became democratic for thirteen years
The show also explores another notable aspect of the Weimar Republic
namely the flowering of cultural expression
whose research interests focus on gender and sexuality in German film and media
“This was the first place that saw serious efforts at queer emancipation
both in print and in visual culture more broadly
We saw the artistic development of a queer community there
and I think that's a huge part of the appeal of the show to modern audiences,” she added
Baer and Smith sought to explore Babylon Berlin’s unique contribution to contemporary visual culture when putting together the book
“was to have an interdisciplinary set of fields represented in the book
The show is so rich in its many dimensions that we really wanted to bring experts on different areas together to write in more specificity and detail about those topics.”
The book includes essays from scholars of Jewish Germany
A Guest SpeakerImmediately following Smith and Baer’s book launch was an event featuring one of the three creators of the Babylon Berlin series
Berlin-based film director Henk Handloegten came to campus on September 12 to lead a screening and discussion of select scenes from the fourth season of the show
“We were struck by what Handloegten had to say about the show’s commitment to emotional realism,” said Baer
meaning “how the show aimed to present the historical reality of characters in the 1920s but in a way that would resonate emotionally with audiences of today
The example he gave was the music they used in the series
which often had a contemporary edge and so could be quite different from the sounds of the 1920s,” she explained
“While the makers of the show were careful to try to maintain historical accuracy regarding the depiction of political and legal issues
I think in terms of the broader artistic context—the acting styles and the soundtrack for example—there was much more of a ‘mash-up’ aesthetic
mixing the old and the new,” added Baer
Handloegten’s visit was sponsored by the Departments of Art History
and the German Embassy’s “Germany on Campus” Initiative

and a California attorney are suing the state of California after it passed two laws that censor online content
Kelly Chang Rickert in federal suit challenging law that unlawfully censors political speech
The Babylon Bee and Rickert are now free to post their political content online during the current election season without fear of violating the law while the case continues
That law applies around election time to censor digitally edited content that is “materially deceptive” and addresses candidates
and other election material related to California elections
The law also forces speakers to include a disclaimer when posting satire and imposes severe penalties
allowing anyone who sees the content to sue and obtain attorneys’ fees
“California’s war against political memes is censorship
We shouldn’t trust the government to decide what is true in our online political debates,” said ADF Vice President of Litigation Strategy and Center for Conscience Initiatives Jonathan Scruggs
Newsom has no constitutional authority to act as the humor police
While lawmakers act as if posting and resharing memes is a threat to democracy
these laws censor speech California politicians don’t like
We are grateful that California’s unconstitutional law can no longer be applied to censor The Babylon Bee and Ms
Rickert while the case continues and that they are again free to exercise their First Amendment rights to poke fun at political leaders.”
“Our job is hard enough when our jokes keep coming true
as if they were prophecies,” said The Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon
“But it becomes significantly more difficult when self-serving politicians abuse their power to try to control public discourse and clamp down on comedy
the First Amendment secures our right to tell jokes they don’t like.”
“My personal blog and social media accounts don’t need Governor Newsom’s stamp of approval,” added Rickert
“This attempt to silence humor and other content that appeals to me and my audience is a blatant misuse of power to silence dissent.”
Newsom responded to a parody video of Vice President Kamala Harris by declaring that the video “should be illegal,” and the California Legislature responded by fast-tracking the bills
which the governor signed into law on Sept
In the motion asking to temporarily halt AB 2839
ADF attorneys explain that the law both compels speech with which The Bee and Rickert disagree and chills speech they wish to share
The motion explains that the language in the laws is too vague and gives California officials too much power to censor speech they disagree with
The California Legislature also recognized the constitutional problems of the laws and said that they were “almost guaranteed to be the subject of litigation.”

A Scott’s Addition-based indoor farming company has a new leader at the helm
Babylon Micro-Farms announced last week that Marc Oshima has been appointed its new CEO
Oshima brings years of experience in indoor farming to Babylon
He was previously a co-founder and chief marketing officer of AeroFarms
an indoor agriculture company founded in the Finger Lakes area of New York in 2004 that is now headquartered in Danville
He also served as board chair for the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Alliance
Oshima succeeds former Babylon CEO Marc Oosterhuis
who spent six years with the company as mentor
Oosterhuis announced his stepping down in February
Oshima told BizSense he is not aware of the reasoning behind Oosterhuis’s stepping down
but that Oosterhuis has remained in an advisory role during the transition
Oshima said he first got exposed to Babylon through its membership in the CEA Alliance
Babylon looked for a candidate with experience in indoor farming and scaling companies
The company has installed its micro-farms in 40 states and five countries and Oshima said he’s looking forward to continued growth
Babylon last year unveiled a small, $6,500 farming unit aimed at K-12 schools called the STEM Garden
It’s now in over 100 K-12 schools and universities and Oshima hopes for Babylon’s footprint in schools to grow on his watch
That growth also includes continued work with New York-based Green Bronx Machine
which integrates programming on indoor farming in K-12 schools
Green Bronx Machine has expanded across country lines
including significant work in the United Arab Emirates
Green Bronx Machine founder Stephen Ritz serves as a brand ambassador for Babylon
“When we talk about being in five countries today
we see a lot of growth opportunities into these global markets,” Oshima said
“We’re just scratching the surface on what the total available market is.”
Oshima said he’s excited to get started with Babylon’s 40-person team that he said is united around the mission to provide access to quality
because we’re writing this new playbook in agriculture,” he said
we’ll be able to write the next chapter.”
Oshima comes aboard following the recent unveiling of Babylon’s newest product
a new iteration of its flagship Galleri Micro-Farm – an automated indoor vertical farm that the company introduced in late May 2022
The micro-farms can hold plants from over 45 varieties like leafy greens
down from the roughly $15,000-per-unit pricing of the original Galleri
Babylon was taking orders for the Galleri Lite and was set to ship by the end of the month
Babylon’s Galleri clients include American Airlines
University of Virginia and other organizations
Babylon was founded in Charlottesville in 2017 by Alexander Olesen and Graham Smith
who remain with the company as a board member and CTO
Babylon relocated to its current headquarters at 3409 Carlton St
Manufacturing of Babylon products is also done at the Carlton Street headquarters
the company has secured around $20 million in equity funding and between $2 million and $4 million in grant funding

led by archaeologist Quhtan Abbas Hassan Aboud
is part of an ongoing excavation at site 19/3 in the Al-Fayadiya district
The discoveries offer insights into two distinct historical layers: the Sasanian and Old Babylonian periods
providing a rare glimpse into the evolution of one of the world’s earliest civilizations
The excavation site is divided into two sectors
Sector A covers an area of approximately 6,000 square meters and features two distinct archaeological layers
Director of Iraq’s Department of Excavations
the upper layer corresponds to the Sasanian period
but it has been significantly damaged by erosion and human activity over time
The deeper and better-preserved layer dates back to the Old Babylonian period
offering researchers a more intact snapshot of urban life during that era
which spanned roughly from 1894 to 1595 BCE
several stand out for their historical and cultural significance
and cylinder seals were discovered in excellent condition
the world’s oldest known writing system
was used more than 5,000 years ago and offers invaluable information about Babylonian governance
The clay tablets often functioned as early legal documents
and some were encased in a clay outer shell—a precursor to the modern envelope
small cylindrical objects carved with intricate symbols
were used to sign documents or mark ownership in ancient Mesopotamia
often made from stone or other durable materials
were essential tools for people across all levels of Babylonian society
The artistry and craftsmanship of these artifacts
highlight the visual culture and aesthetic developments of the Babylonian period
The seals feature detailed iconography that has helped historians trace the evolution of Babylonian art and symbolism over time
According to a statement from Iraq’s General Authority of Antiquities and Heritage
the findings represent a breakthrough in the understanding of Babylonian urban development and material culture

“Certain dates echo throughout history,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in a speech on Jan
“Dates that occupy not only a place on our calendars
Harris’ speech reflects the liberal trend to equate the events of Jan
leading to one being shot and killed — with acts of war and terrorism
But after almost four years of extensive coverage from media and Democrats
most people don’t realize that Alexandria Occasio-Cortez died “over seven times” that day
or that thousands of Trump supporters covered the Capitol walls like terrifying
rightwing Spider-men while a colossus Buffalo Guy cackled in the sky above them
These are just some of the fictional details The Babylon Bee exposes in its new mockumentary “January 6: The Most Deadliest Day.”
The satirical movie — the Bee’s first feature-length film — is the best way to treat the outlandish claims about mass riots and attacks on democracy
The mockumentary acknowledges the seriousness of what happened — the film is dedicated to Ashli Babbitt
a Trump supporter who was the only person who died at the Capitol — but refuses to pretend Jan
6 is as problematic as 9/11 or Pearl Harbor
The movie stars Bee Editor-in-Chief Kyle Mann as fictional journalist Garth Strudelfudd
Strudelfudd attempts to confirm the premise that Jan
6 was as bad as the terrorist attacks of 9/11 or the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor
Strudelfudd meets with conservative figures Michael Knowles and Dennis Prager and comes face-to-face with violent insurrectionists like Buffalo Guy and Podium Guy
The Babylon Bee’s satirical brilliance undercuts the media narrative surrounding Jan
6 with nonstop humor that frames serious arguments
6 protestor was held in prison for two years without trial and convicted of six felonies; the protester who moved the lectern spent 300 days in solitary confinement and 41 months in prison; and a grandmother who was present at the Capitol was fined $103,000
media and Democrats celebrated Black Lives Matter protesters who rioted
and took 13 lives during the summer of 2020
“Prominent Democrat politicians encouraged [the Black Lives Matter protests],” Knowles says
“The current vice president of the United States actually raised money to bail these people out of jail.”
the film highlights true stories from people at the Capitol
filmed himself entering the Capitol building — the video shows him standing in the entrance for 71 seconds and leaving at the police’s request
police arrested him and charged him with “disorderly and disruptive conduct” and “parading
As Strudelfudd finds mounting evidence that the media’s narrative has misrepresented what actually happened at the Capitol
preferring to zap his interviewees into the Phantom Zone — an extra-dimensional prison from DC Comics
His character represents Democrats’ commitment to persecuting their political enemies
But the movie includes normal Americans in the conversation
most people interviewed did not remember exactly where they were on Jan
Interviews with Republican women reveal people who care about their country
It’s also the Bee’s next move in its fight for free speech
As Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon explained in a September speech at Hillsdale College, the Bee’s refusal to remove content mocking transgenderism helped convince Elon Musk to buy Twitter (now X). The Bee also announced a lawsuit against California’s recent anti-deepfake law
The movie is available to premium subscribers on The Babylon Bee’s website

a teary-eyed bunch of Mattituck High School girls basketball players congratulated their Babylon rivals
The Tuckers had aspirations of defending their Suffolk County Class B title but dropped a 57-22 decision to the top-seeded side at St
Joseph’s University in Patchogue last Sunday
The Tuckers could not get over a slow start and they wound up chasing the game from just about the opening tip-off
“I was hoping that we would come out and be fully energized, come out at our full potential, but we didn’t,” said junior guard Claire McKenzie
who tied senior guard Riley Corrigan for a team-high eight points
“We definitely forced a lot of bad passes and bad shots.”
which extended its winning streak to six games
will meet the winner of the Nassau County final between Carle Place and Cold Spring Harbor for the Long Island championship at Farmingdale College on March 12
“They’re just as good as they were last year
if not better,” senior guard Paige Rittberg said
As one of only two teams to beat the Panthers in the regular season
the second-seeded Tuckers (13-9) were confident entering the contest against the League VII champions
But Mattituck struggled to get on track against Babylon’s relentless defense
missing their first 11 field-goal attempts and converting on just one of 15 shots from the floor in the first quarter as the Panthers grabbed a 12-6 lead
“I feel like that was nerves,” said Rittberg
Mattituck gave up seven turnovers in the opening period and 21 for the game
Babylon coughed up the ball four times in the quarter
“The pressure that they applied was really
really good,” head coach Steve Van Dood said
They were trapping well and putting our girls on our heels
and that’s something we’ve preached all year
Babylon did a good job of controlling the dance
The Tuckers tried to find their game and a rhythm
but Babylon increased its advantage to 27-10 at the half and never looked back
They boast a talented trio who averaged in double digits during the regular season
Junior forward Peyton Logue-Boyd finished with a game-high 18 points
and eighth-grade point guard Morgan Fielder and senior forward Gia Randazzo contributed 16 points apiece
it definitely gave us fits,” Van Dood said
“We would make one stop on one of the girls
and then someone else would be open to make a shot.”
the youngest and smallest player on the court
Her quickness and ability to dribble with both hands allowed her to run past her marker
Fielder caused several turnovers that were transformed into baskets
“She makes really good passes to she sets really good like picks and giving goes with the taller people on her team,” McKenzie said
That definitely helps her get the ball.”
Corrigan and Rittberg were among four seniors on the team who played their final game
along with forwards Rhianna Lutz and Casey Szczotka
really good at keeping our heads up,” Rittberg said
I’m definitely going to miss all the players and our competitiveness.”
Van Dood felt the Tuckers acquitted themselves well this season
“We really weren’t picked to do anything,” he said
considering we had a lot of girls that never played basketball before in their lives
The fact that we were even in the county championship game this year is a testament to how hard they worked and how they listened.”

Maine (Special to Informed Comment; Feature) – Yesterday
I interviewed a refugee Ukrainian family in transition from their homeland looking for a permanent place to settle
They were being visited by evangelical church friends
Since I was teaching a course on current world conflicts
the conversation turned to Palestine/Israel where a number of references were made to Babylon and Jeremiah.
the Lord will now do everything that he has decided/He will punish Babylon’s people
as he said he would do/you people of Babylon
who live beside many rivers/it is now time for you to die…..”.(Jeremiah 50:1-51)
evangelists view all forms of “wickedness and evil” in the world as symbolized by “Babylon”
America is a modern version of Babylon. But how is it that Babylon became associated with confusion
yet was known in classical times as being accepting of many languages and customs?
Babylonian references are widespread among the 24% of American adults who consider themselves evangelical. The negative references are not related to Hammurabi of Babylon who provided a “code of laws”
who conquered Babylon and allowed the Jewish captives to return to Jerusalem; His story was chronicled by Xenophon in the Cyropaedia
a leader in the Achaemenid Empire who defeated the Neo-Babylonian Empire in 539 BC
Aramaic became the official language of the Persian empire
and its official religion was Zoroastrianism
Cyrus’s enlightened policy put an end to the Assyro-Babylonian practice of deporting conquered peoples and trying to destroy all local nationalisms.”
According to the Israeli historian Shlomo Sand
much of the Bible was composed in Jerusalem in the 5th century BC
following the return from the “Babylonian captivity”
Those who composed the Books of the Bible amplified ancient battles in order to magnify the power of their monotheistic God
Relatively small battles became exaggerated into massacres for the purpose of impressing the listener or reader to the power wielded by Yahweh.
After having a discussion with my class concerning Babylon
a story associated with classical Greece in the 5th century BCE
Plato’s description of the cave was an analogy depicting two versions of reality
In the shadowy recesses of the cave people were shackled to benches while images floated by
projected by a priesthood displaying images of deities while pacing behind a fire that cast images on a wall in front of the shackled spectators
but periodically one viewer made the decision to unshackle themselves and exit the cave to encounter the sun of truth.
I posed a question to the class: “Are there opportunities for all the cave dwellers to unshackle themselves?” The philosopher
whose book “The Essence of Truth”
considered the unshackling the most important part of the myth
They became absorbed by the implications of this story and how it could apply to those who supported the conventional “history” espoused by evangelicals
and the cynically disposed Israelis and Americans who were complicit in the genocide taking place in daily images; the virtual reality of destruction transmitted throughout the world by the technical wizardry of modern media
Plato’s (and Heidegger’s) explanation of those shackled in the cave was that they ceased to see what is taking place and are bound by their biases and beliefs to the “unhidden” nature of reality
Dissociation and a dulling of moral sensibilities are the lot of those shackled to benches in the cave which can be compared to the Israeli activists and intellectuals who exit the shadow world of the cave and become Illuminated by the sun of truth.
Are those dwelling in the cave bound by biblical beliefs or deliberately ignoring the massacres taking place in Gaza
The Amalekites in Exodus were massacred as a reprisal for an attack against Israelites after crossing the Red Sea? Yahweh “vowed to blot them out from under heaven”
thus becoming a primal source for the justification of genocide by the more militant members of Israeli society
who compared Amalekites to modern Palestinians
A question addressed was: do “mythic histories”
provide reasons for tribal vengeance and on-going genocide?
Our class discussed these questions and the disjunction between two truths
one dealing with light emanating from the sun of truth and the other portraying the darkest aspects of biblical passages relating to mythic history
The result portrays a nation incarcerated in a cave of mistruths and misinformation
still shackled to hallucinatory images and unwilling to accept the consequences of the massacres that have been taking place in their name; Nor have they been able to empathize with the calamitous nature of the suffering caused by the deliberate bombing of women and children; Nor are they ready to atone for the moral shame causing generational traumas to the 16,000 children slaughtered by bombs provided by America
Such moral catastrophes will have to be confronted in the times to come
since they have not yet become crystallized
except to those who have exited the cave of shadowy images and confronted “the essence of truth.”

Heartbreak and distrust seep through every verse
What makes this track truly remarkable is not only how Tamino draws from the epic fall of Babylon but also how the music itself induces a sense of ancient grandeur

When the Chronicle selected Babylon as our 2024 Overall and Hunter Horse of the Year
we reached out to his past connections to learn more about his beginnings
Babylon’s oldest connections aren’t surprised at all by his success in the hunter ring
Growing up he was a barn favorite with his breeders at Hof Thormählen in Northern Germany
“He was always pretty special because of his personality and the marks on the face
and everybody loved to ride him,” said Marie Baumgart
who rode him at his first and only European show in July of his 4-year-old year
“He was always nice and easy and fun to have around.
“He was always very willing to work,” she continued
“He was really fun and curious about new stuff
and he directly won the young horse style class with a pretty high mark.”

satire has been an important tool for critiquing and debating the prevailing ideas of the time
From Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels to George Orwell’s Animal Farm
satire has been used both to provide social commentary and to reveal underlying truths
But two new laws in California censor free speech
Government officials have no right to decide what gets to be said in our online political debates
so Alliance Defending Freedom is challenging the unconstitutional laws in court
Gavin Newsom tweeted that a parody video of Vice President Kamala Harris should be “illegal.” Heeding the call
the California legislature passed two laws that infringe on the First Amendment by using vague terms to ban certain political speech
applies around election time to any person or group who distributes “materially deceptive content” about candidates
It also requires people to put disclaimers on satirical posts saying
“This … has been manipulated for purposes of satire or parody.” Such a label would defeat the point of satire
The law even requires that this label must be “easily readable by the average viewer” and “no smaller than the largest font size of other text” in the content
requires large online platforms to become state snitches by sometimes labeling and other times taking down posts with “materially deceptive content” about elections
These two laws are a perfect roadmap for widespread government censorship
By using vague standards like banning content “likely to harm” a candidate’s “electoral prospects,” AB 2839 allows government officials to punish people for posting political memes that the officials dislike
The law prohibits people from posting and reposting certain content online
And if you post a political meme or satirical story on social media
the law allows anyone who sees it and disagrees with it to sue you and collect attorneys’ fees
Furthermore, AB 2655 forces large online platforms to become government censorship arms. This kind of coercion represents a deeply disturbing trend that the Biden-Harris administration has already engaged in
and it is a blatant violation of the First Amendment’s protection against government censorship
As a satirical news website that focuses on religious and political news
The Babylon Bee would be forced to censor itself and/or place disclaimers on nearly all its stories under these laws
which would ruin the jokes it is trying to make
is an attorney in Los Angeles who regularly engages in political expression with the public
She would like to continue sharing political memes with her large social media following
but these laws threaten to punish her for doing so
California’s new laws follow on the heels of more censorship that has taken place across the globe in recent months
Officials in countries around the world have often used “misinformation” as an excuse to silence speech they dislike
In Brazil, for example, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes recently suspended X nationwide because he claimed the platform presented a “real danger” of “negatively influencing the electorate in 2024
with the aim of unbalancing the electoral result
based on hate campaigns in the digital age
The idea of banning a large social media platform because it could lead to an election outcome that government actors dislike should be outrageous to all Americans who understand the First Amendment
But the truth is that California’s laws are not a far cry from what is happening in Brazil
laws like California’s that censor political speech could lead to the same censorship that Brazil is experiencing
That is why it’s a bad idea to censor political speech in the name of “protecting democracy.”
While stopping political lies is a noble goal
allowing government officials to decide what is or isn’t true is not the way to achieve it
And if we let officials decide who can or cannot make fun of them
both humor and robust political debate will fall by the wayside
ADF attorneys filed a lawsuit on behalf of The Babylon Bee and Kelly Chang Rickert challenging California’s unconstitutional laws because we understand that free speech is a core tenet of our liberty in the United States
The way to combat lies and “misinformation” is to promote more
Because AB 2839—the law prohibiting people from posting “materially deceptive content” during election time—went into effect immediately
we asked a federal district court to put the law on hold
Less than a month after we filed our lawsuit
another district court ruled in a related case that AB 2839 likely violates the First Amendment
California officials agreed they cannot enforce the law against The Babylon Bee or Rickert
ADF is the world's largest legal organizationcommitted to protecting religious freedom, free speech
