who affirmed he was sober during the encounter
said a bright orange flash in the sky caught his eye and was followed by thin lights undulating together for a brief moment before rapidly separating
The thin lights then turned into eight separate beams of light
The lights were too far up in the sky and much too fast to have been drones
“If you blinked you would’ve missed them,” Powers said
Powers joined a growing number of Americans and Texans who’ve seen something in the sky that defies their understanding
Reports of UFOs have increased in the United States and Texas has been a major hot spot in the past few years
is a nonprofit that studies reports of UFO sightings
It has more than 4,000 members around the world and is active in 43 countries
Texas has had 5,805 reported UFO sightings since 1949
according to the National UFO Reporting Center
nonprofit corporation that investigates UFO sightings and alien contacts
Although anything moving aloft and not clearly identified is
the sightings come with obvious implications of things otherwordly
or things undisclosed such as super-secret military technology
The world still is divided among those who scoff at the notion that UFOs are anything more than the mundane seen in odd light
and those who believe they might be far more
But the possibility of far more has become much more widely accepted recently than it had been in the past
Congress gathered May 17 to discuss recent sightings of unexplained aerial phenomena in the nation
Lawmakers were shown declassified videos of UAPs
including a video shot by a military pilot passing a spherical object in the distance
“The stigma associated with UAPs has gotten in the way of good intelligence analysis,” U.S
“Pilots avoided reporting or were laughed at when they did.”
Pentagon officials testified under oath that the U.S
Government did not collect materials from alien landings on Earth
The Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency have been looking into reports of unidentified objects in the sky for decades
which is a document that can be found on the FBI’s public vault website
The reports were made available by the Freedom of Information Act
From 1947 to 1969 there were a total 12,618 UFO sightings
many of which were explained but 701 of which were never identified by the government
1969 the secretary of the Air Force announced the termination of the program
UFO sightings in America go as far back as 1639 when Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony John Winthrop wrote in his journal about citizens encountering strange bright lights in the sky
Winthrop had described a story of three credible men rowing a boat when they had seen a great light alternating throughout the sky
which still has historians and scientists discussing what it could’ve been
Powers acknowledges that inevitably there will be readers who will doubt the experience
But it won’t change his mind about the encounter
Friends he has shown the photos also were awed by it
who has had two heart attacks in the past two months
thought it was important to reach out to the media about his encounter out of fear he would die soon
“There’s something out there,” Powers said

Restraino says that on numerous occasions she has found the carcasses of killed animals at the location
A fallen “no trespassing” sign rests on the ground near a section of woodland in Bacliff on Thursday
Bacliff resident Chelsey Restaino says she has repeatedly found the carcasses of numerous animals dumped on and around the site
Chelsey Restaino says she's found everything from dead puppies to mutilated 'possums near her home on Galveston Street
Chelsey Restaino had been living in Bacliff just a few months before she started to pick up on a disturbingly common thread on her walks around the neighborhood — mutilated animals that have been left to die on a street cornering a wooded area
a residential road with homes on one side and an overgrown wooded lot on the other
when she found a lacerated and dead cat in overgrown grass on the side of the lot
Little did she know at the time that the cat would be just one of four animals she would find mutilated and left to die on the corner of Galveston Street
she found three puppies she suspects had been drowned and left in a bucket in the same grassy corner
any attempts to revive them would have been too late
Restaino works in a pet crematorium and picks up the dead animals that she finds to dispose of them
The latest she found was a dead adult boxer dog in November
Restaino fears someone could be harming animals and using the secluded area as a dumping ground
After reporting a number of mutilated animals to the sheriff’s office
Restaino was left with a feeling that she wasn’t doing enough to put an end to the problem
“I have reported every time that I have found dead animals on that road
but I am still left wondering what else I can do about it,” she said
Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset says he hasn’t heard anything about the problem
Dogs and cats aren’t the only animals she’s found
“There is a lot of wildlife I have found mutilated and dead
who said she’s determined to stop the dumping
ventured into the wooded lot recently to see what she could find
trash and the skeleton of what looked to be a cat,” she said
Restaino said she is considering installing a trail camera in the area to catch anyone who might be dumping animals there
Section 42.09 of the Texas penal code prohibits a person from intentionally
knowingly or recklessly cruelly treating an animal
a person might face penalties including fines
according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas
Those under the age of 18 also are required to undergo counseling if convicted of animal cruelty
“I really would like to get the word out so whoever is responsible can be caught and charged,” Restaino said
