On October 6, San Diego County announced the detection of locally acquired dengue in an Escondido resident. Pasadena and Long Beach said mosquito-bite prevention "can be as simple as using insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites eliminating any standing water around your home where mosquitoes can breed and keeping your home mosquito-free by using or fixing screens on your doors and windows." This small local outbreak raises concerns about the ongoing spread of dengue and the potential for spread to other areas of LA County Dengue fever typically causes no symptoms but may lead to high fever While no antiviral drug is available to treat dengue but it is not approved for use in US travelers visiting but not living in an endemic area The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday said it has received reports of 90 imported Oropouche virus from 5 states and it also issued recommendations for male travelers to prevent possible sexual spread.  The group has warned about the risk of infected pregnant women passing the virus to their fetuses and the possibility of poor fetal outcomes. In its latest update, the CDC also acknowledged the risk of sexual transmission, raised in a recent scientific report but said no sexual transmission cases have been reported.  In new interim recommendations to prevent sexual spread for travelers to affected areas the CDC recommends that men diagnosed with Oropouche infections use condoms or abstain from sex for 6 weeks from the start of symptoms For those with Oropouche symptoms during travel or within 2 weeks of travel the CDC recommends talking to a healthcare provider about testing or consider using condoms or abstaining from sex for 6 weeks since the start of symptoms men who have Oropouche symptoms should wait 6 weeks before donating Those who were potentially exposed during travel should consider waiting 6 weeks after returning from travel to donate Two new countries in the Americas region—Ecuador and Guyana—have reported their first locally acquired Oropouche virus cases, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said in its monthly update.  Since the group’s last update in September 423 new cases have been reported from 7 countries which has also reported three cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome linked to the disease The United States reported 69 imported cases.  including fetal death and congenital malformation have been reported from Brazil and Cuba.  A study in Saudi Arabia indicates that being colonized with a multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) is associated with a significantly increased risk of subsequent MDRO infection researchers reported this week in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology The study conducted at a tertiary care facility in Riyadh included patients in active surveillance testing (AST) for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Researchers at the hospital compared the risk of developing a relevant invasive infection within 365 days of the AST result between colonized and non-colonized groups.  While previous studies have documented the link between MDRO colonization and increased risk of subsequent infection the authors of the study note that little is known about the extent of MDRO colonization in Saudi Arabia's hospitals A total of 19,134 ASTs conducted in 2021 were included in the analysis—4,919 for CRE Nine percent of patients screened for CRE were colonized compared with 10% for MRSA and 14% for VRE Patient demographics were similar between colonized and non-colonized groups patients colonized with CRE were 4.6 times (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.3 to 6.4) more likely to develop a CRE infection with 88% of CRE-colonized patients developing an infection with the same carbapenemase gene MRSA-colonized patients were 8.2 times (95% CI 4.7 to 14.3) more likely to develop a MRSA infection than non-colonized patients and VRE-colonized patients were 22 times (95% CI 10.1 to 48.1) more likely to develop a VRE infection.  The median time from AST to clinical infection was reduced for patients colonized with CRE and VRE while MRSA-colonized patients took longer to develop a clinical MRSA infection compared with non-colonized patients The authors say the findings highlight the need to implement AST for MDRO colonization and rigorous infection control measures to effectively mitigate transmission of these dangerous pathogens Rwandan scientists and partners from the World Health Organization (WHO) have launched the world’s first clinical trials for Marburg virus disease treatment there are no approved treatments or vaccines against Marburg virus though a clinical trial of an investigational Marburg virus vaccine from the Sabin Vaccine Institute recently launched in the country.  Matshidiso Moeti, MBBS, head of the WHO Africa regional office, said on X today that the clinical trial will test the efficacy and safety of remdesivir as well as MBP091, a monoclonal antibody that targets Marburg virus. The drug was developed by Mapp Biopharmaceutical with support from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) For the third day in a row, Rwanda’s health ministry reported no new Marburg cases or deaths keeping the outbreak total at 62 infections all new cases have been related to a hospital cluster and their contacts in Kigali Officials said there is no evidence of community spread Eight more people recovered from their illnesses Health workers have also vaccinated 856 people as part of the clinical trial of the Sabin Vaccine Institute’s investigational Marburg virus vaccine The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) today announced another avian flu outbreak in dairy cattle The state’s latest outbreak occurred at a farm in Clinton County Michigan has now reported 30 outbreaks in dairy cattle Testing at the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory initially identified the virus and samples will be sent for confirmation testing to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratory If confirmed as H5N1, the detection would push the number of US outbreaks in dairy cattle to 306 from 14 states In other avian flu developments, the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has confirmed three more H5N1 detections in bottlenose dolphins which were sampled last December and January All involved animals are from Brevard County The H5N1 detections in US dolphins are the first since 2022 when the virus was found in a bottlenose from Florida’s Dixie County The clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 virus is known to infect sea mammals Global Virus Network scientists highlight the need for robust surveillance and readiness for potential human-to-human viral transmission only the severe infections continued to cause symptoms.  Almost 90% of the European cases were reported in Romania The Wall Street Journal reports the Trump administration is investing $500 million in the universal vaccine project There are currently 59 herds quarantined in 4 Idaho counties The CDC today addressed what's known about treatments pushed by Kennedy urging caution about vitamin A use and citing individual decision-making by heath providers for others Yet uptake of the vaccine was extremely low—less than 4% through November 2024 Today Novavax weighed in on the FDA's latest stipulations noting that postmarketing commitments aren't unusual and are in place for many approved drugs and biologics 44% of respondents said the new leaders will make them trust their health recommendations less than they used to and Ohio notes an infection in an unvaccinated adult CIDRAP - Center for Infectious Disease Research & PolicyResearch and Innovation Office Email us © 2025 Regents of the University of Minnesota All rights Reserved. The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity educator and employer Research and Innovation Office |   Contact U of M  |  Privacy Policy Newsletter subscribe SearchChristian-owned In-N-Out Burger moves headquarters back to Baldwin Park, expands in TennesseeLog InSubscribeThe Christian Post To enjoy our website, you'll need to enable JavaScript in your web browser. Print Two more cases of the mosquito-borne dengue virus have been identified in Baldwin Park bringing to five the recent total concentrated in the area and raising concerns of a “small local outbreak” of the virus according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health The new cases are under investigation by the health department in partnership with the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito Vector Control District 2024A previous version of this article implied that Aedes mosquitoes are uncommon in L.A The mosquitoes are common in the county; locally transmitted cases of dengue are not Dengue is mainly transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It is usually found in tropical and subtropical regions. Neither of the people most recently infected with dengue had a history of travel to areas where the virus is typically found. Sustained spread of dengue in a neighborhood occurs when infected mosquitoes bite and spread it to people, who are then bitten by other mosquitoes. Those mosquitoes become infected from the blood of their hosts and the cycle continues. California Climate change is exacerbating the risk of potentially dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in California — threatening to turn more of those annoying-but-harmless bites into severe illnesses, experts say. Aedes mosquitoes are most active during the day, but their peak biting time is just before sunrise and just after sunset. “Many people infected may not show symptoms, making it challenging to detect and control the spread of the disease,” said L.A. County Public Health Officer Muntu Davis. Flulike symptoms of dengue may appear, if at all, two to seven days after being bitten. The full range of symptoms include fever, followed by severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash and possibly mild bleeding, public health officials said. More critical symptoms include severe bleeding and shock or a severe drop in blood pressure that can lead to organ failure. This year, there have now been eight cases of locally acquired dengue reported in L.A. County, including two in El Monte and one in Panorama City, according to the health department. None have developed severe disease, officials said. Two more cases of the mosquito-borne dengue virus are confirmed in Baldwin Park The risk of widespread transmission in L.A but the health department is closely monitoring the situation “We will continue aggressive mosquito control efforts and public education to help protect public health and mitigate the risk of further transmission,” said Jason Farned San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District manager Farned urged residents to take take advantage of free vector control services including inspection and abatement of mosquito breeding sites at their homes. This brings the total number of cases to three, which public health officials warned is “unprecedented” for the region. Aiman Halai, an epidemiologist with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, said at a news conference Wednesday that the threat of these kinds of viruses can change how people go about their day in L.A. County. “Mosquito-borne disease is a reminder that mosquitoes aren't just an annoyance but can make people sick,” she said. Officials said, however, that there’s no need to panic. All mosquitoes tested in the San Gabriel Valley have been negative for dengue. Both people with the latest cases had no history of travel to areas where dengue is common, which means they got it in Southern California. The disease is transmitted through bites from an infected Aedes mosquito, and it cannot be passed from person to person, public health officials said. Cases of locally acquired dengue were confirmed in Long Beach and Pasadena last fall, but it’s still considered to be extremely rare for the region. The L.A. County Department of Public Health is going door-to-door to talk to people living in the immediate area where the cases have been confirmed. They’re also offering free dengue testing to all the households they visit. “If our public health team visits your home, please allow them to share information with you,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of the department. “And help us by responding to a short survey to assess if anyone in the household has symptoms or a recent history of travel.” Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and they only need enough to fill a thimble or bottle cap. They also need 5 to 7 days to go from egg to adult. People are being urged to tip out any standing water around their home at least once a week and toss out any unused containers that could collect it. But the best way to prevent mosquito bites is to use an effective repellent. Public health officials recommended those containing EPA approved ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin, IR 3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Print A rare case of dengue This case represents the state’s third-ever confirmed case of locally transmitted dengue that is not related to travel. The other two cases were confirmed in Long Beach and Pasadena last fall The potential risk for widespread dengue virus transmission in L.A. County remains low, public health officials said in a statement Monday. “While the likelihood of widespread transmission is low at this time, we must remain vigilant and prevent further cases through public education and mosquito control efforts,” L.A. County Health Officer Muntu Davis said. Dengue fever can cause flu-like symptoms including high fever, severe headache, muscle pain and a rash. Severe cases of dengue can lead to potentially life-threatening complications including internal bleeding and organ failure. Health officials said the infected victim was recovering but would not disclose the severity of the symptoms to preserve patient privacy. Climate & Environment Mosquito season has arrived in Southern California along with the threat that these insects could carry a number of dangerous diseases increasing the risk of bites and mosquito-borne diseases He encouraged people to use insect repellent remove standing water outside their home where mosquitoes can lay eggs and use window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from coming inside Dengue is not commonly spread by mosquitoes in L.A County have been among people who have traveled to areas where dengue is commonly spread including tropical regions such as the Caribbean Central and South America and Southeast Asia There have been more than three times as many travel-associated dengue cases this year, as of July, than over the same time period last year. “Dengue cases are on the rise globally and in the United States,” a spokesperson for the L.A. County Department of Public Health said. “Latin America and Puerto Rico are experiencing a record number of cases of dengue this year, which has led to a higher number of travel-associated dengue cases in LA County and the U.S.” The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District has employed mosquito treatments in the area to reduce mosquito populations and breeding sources, District Manager Jason Farned said in a statement Monday.
