Former Marcy Corrections Officer pleads guilty to manslaughter in case involving the death of an inmate in December 2024
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. — It's been six weeks since a devastating fire pushed 24 families out of their homes in a New Legacy apartment building in Baldwinsville
which the local fire chief says has caused some headaches
"We've received many calls from tenants saying that
the insurance companies won't pay until they have a cause and we can't get sources or resources until there's a cause determined," Chief Tony McIntyre said
McIntyre lead the North West Fire District's response to the fire on Jan
He said the severity of what happened is an outlier in his decades of experience in Baldwinsville; he's also had to take on new roles since it happened
He said he's fielded calls from people looking for help to prove that they need financial or other kinds of assistance
given a final fire report is not ready yet
He explained that these kinds of investigations - in the hands of officials with Onondaga County and New York State - are complex
Investigators need to work through an exhaustive list of variables
McIntyre said that this was not arson; but said more forensic work has been necessary to try to find the source of the fire
He said the investigation team is working as quickly and diligently as possible
"It's a large dollar loss for multiple insurance agencies
we would like ideally the next day to have a cause
but that just does not work that way," McIntyre said
he's in the same situation as everybody else is
It hits me a little differently as you can imagine because he is part of my family
the primary issue has been not having access to the building
Chastity Ward said her heart aches knowing she's likely lost photo albums and other precious items
but wants to see for herself if anything survived
Some tenants lost valuables in burglaries that took place the weekend of the fire; Baldwinsville Police Chief Michael Lefancheck said that the investigation is still ongoing
Ward said she's looking for more information from New Legacy management and owners Barrington Residential on how to proceed
"I'm still emotionally distraught
I'm still trying to recover from the whole fire
to try to help myself and my family so we can get back up on our feet," Ward said
Barrington Residential management said that they have had to work around the structural integrity of the fire damaged side of the building
They said that tenants who lived in the part of the building not touched by the fire have been allowed to retrieve their belongings; on the fire damaged side
management said that they were only given the keys back in late February
working through safety issues with village code enforcement
CNY Central did not hear back from codes on Friday night
tenants should expect a message Friday evening about a plan to recover personal items
Ward said that the Baldwinsville community has been an important life line, as donations poured in following the fire

— (UPDATE) The Baldwinsville Central School District said it recovered what is believed to be a plastic Orby Gun following a lockdown at C.W
They are meant to be for play and are very similar to Orbeez guns
the hold-in-place order at the high school and the lockouts at Elden Elementary and Durgee Jr
The district noted that "normal activities" have resumed at the schools
"All staff and students are safe and counseling supports are in place for students in need," the district said
All after-school and evening activities are canceled across the district for Thursday but dismissal will continue as normal
Parents seeking to pick up their student are asked to do so before 2 p.m
so that the normal dismissal is not impacted
Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the incident
Onondaga County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police responded to the incident
Baker High School was on lockdown Thursday morning after a student was reported to have a BB gun with them
The Baldwinsville Central School District said
The district said the student who was reported to be in possession of the BB gun is with police
The district said it has shifted to a hold-in-place order until law enforcement releases each classroom
The district said law enforcement is still investigating the scene
Lockouts were initiated at the district's Elden Elementary School and Durgee Junior High School due to the report of a student at the high school with a BB gun
— Two Baldwinsville teacher's aides are facing charges related to the abuse of a 15-year-old student
His parents say they didn't hear about it for a full day
and isn't the first time they believe the school district has failed their son
Baldwinsville police said that teacher's aide Kimberley Harrison allegedly injured Lucas Delgatto
a Durgee Junior High School student with cerebral palsy
of witnessing the incident and failing to tell anyone despite being a mandated reporter under New York State law
Baldwinsville Police Chief Michael Lefancheck told the I-Team that while Woods failed to report Harrison allegedly bruising Delgatto while strapping him into his wheelchair
While a custodian is not a mandated reporter
it was that unnamed staff member who notified administrators in the junior high school
The case was in the hands of the Baldwinsville Police Department's School Resource Officer by the next week
"The teachers assistance was being very rough
hadn't positioned the youth properly in there and was applying the straps in an improper manner very roughly and very hard," Chief Lefancheck said
"Certainly not treating this 15-year-old with cerebral palsy in a matter that they should be."
Woods told the I-Team that she had no comment; Harrison could not be reached
Delgatto's parents are now concerned about how often he may have been mishandled behind closed doors
said that he has come home from school hurt before
In one instance she alleges that a teacher's aide left him alone in a classroom
she said that Delgatto came home with a black eye
instead speculating that the wind may have affected his eye on the bus as he was sitting next to an open window
Baldwinsville School District spokesperson Sarah Buckshot said that Superintendent Joseph DeBarbieri had no comment on Delgatto's time as a student
"I as a mom don't feel safe putting him in that district
I don't feel that he feels safe going back to that district," Corrado said
She said her heart broke when she found out about the most recent incident
Because she said it took a full day for the district to notify her
unaware of the alleged abuse that occurred on Jan
said that he is frustrated by the district's handling of prior incidents where the 15-year-old got hurt
He said that often the district has been too slow to notify them
Don't let it happen to begin with," Kekevian said

Fayetteville-Manlius softball toppled Baldwinsville on Thursday for its first league win in over two years.Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

— Fayetteville-Manlius softball has struggled against its biggest rivals in recent years
Entering Thursday’s clash with Baldwinsville
the Hornets had not won a contest in league play since April of 2023
but some timely hitting lifted F-M to a 6-5 victory over the Bees
who took over the squad prior to the 2024 campaign
credited a change in mindset to the team’s first league win under his tenure
“I need these kids to believe that they are capable
We’re changing the culture here when it comes to how we expect to compete.”
The win marks a significant shift from last season
F-M is just one victory away from matching last year’s win total despite having seven games left
It also signifies F-M’s first defeat of Baldwinsville since the 2021 campaign. Hornets shortstop Megan Woodridge is the only active player who was on the team during that victory
The junior went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double to clinch her second career win over the Bees
but you can’t always let the good teams beat you
Woodridge crossed the plate first for F-M in the opening inning
with both the Hornets and Bees tacking on runs in each of the first three frames
The scoring dropped off in the middle innings. However, Baldwinsville added on to the scoreboard again in the fifth thanks to a key double by senior Julianna Gingrich
F-M was not discouraged by the deficit. Eighth-grader Avilene Terry crushed a solo home run to knot the score for the Hornets
‘All I need to do is make contact,’” Monroe said
Hornets pitcher Katie Modugno managed to close out the Bees in the seventh inning
The seventh-grader pitched three innings while giving up just one run in her varsity debut
“It was Katie’s first time on varsity and she proved why she belongs here,” Curro said
“I think she’s going to be a great addition for us.”
Fayetteville-Manlius Softball Woodridge led F-M’s offense with two runs and two RBIs
Gingrich put together an outstanding performance for Baldwinsville
Gingrich knocked in four runs throughout the outing
The Hornets (6-4) hit the road on Saturday to take on Auburn
but I’m proud of my kids for being able to handle the fatigue and handle the failures.”
Baldwinsville (4-5) has a sizable break to recover before a date with Fulton on Wednesday

Anyone who knows 'Rocco' at the New Legacy Apartments in Baldwinsville has always known him as a friendly dog
24,his owner Angela Murray said that Rocco started barking 'like a mad man.' That's what finally alerted her to the fact that there was a fire that was beginning to tear through the roof of her apartment building
Murray said she got out down a stair case that was engulfed in flames just seconds after she got to safety
They spent the day Monday going to various doctor's offices to try to refill prescriptions; it's a situation that many of her neighbors are feeling after the fire displaced dozens Friday night
Those neighbors tell the I-Team that Rocco is a hero because at first
Yolanda Hill and Don Jones said that while they could hear multiple dogs barking - set off by Rocco - they couldn't hear a fire alarm
which owns and operates the New Legacy Apartments
said that they have not had a chance to go back into their building just yet and are working with local authorities
The spokesperson said that the smoke detectors appeared to be working as they continued to make noise throughout the weekend
Neighbors like Ward said that those alarms did not sound until everyone was already outside and the fire
who live with Hill - their mother - at her apartment
He said that the barking pushed him to double check that everything was ok; that's when he heard the sound of crackling flames
"If it wasn't for the dogs barking so loud
we would have never knew just to get up and check," Jones said
Jones immediately told Hill to grab the children and get out
and that's exactly what she said she did
With a two-year-old under one arm and a five-year-old in the other
Hill said she nearly broke her neck sprinting out the building
"I ran into the hallway and yelled to my neighbor right here and told her to run
Jones ran out behind them - only to charge back into the building to save his elderly neighbor
"It's the grace of god that everybody got out of that building
That's my main concern that she got out safe and sound," Jones said
Hill stood staring at her charred living room
now visible from the street through a hole created by the fire
She said she lost absolutely everything and has no idea where to begin rebuilding; for now
she's living in a hotel room she knows she won't be able to afford long term
we don't have nowhere to go," Hill said
Baldwinsville Police confirm that at least four units have been broken into since the fire
Chief Michael Lefancheck said that police are still working to determine exactly what has been stolen
"You can't let a few tarnish what the majority is going for," Murray said
"there's always those select few that make everybody look bad
Murray said that she is a survivor; in fact
she had an office in the South Tower of the World Trade Center
She said that she and her neighbors are now in this together
Baldwinsville Code Enforcement said there were no problems with the New Legacy Apartments building that was destroyed in a blaze on Jan
Tenants said it took a long time for any fire alarms in the building to go off
The fire department said that was because the fire started outside of the building
code enforcement told the I-Team that a regular inspection before the fire and a new inspection of the building revealed that there were no code violations present
That includes any violations against fire alarms
However, the inspection confirmed that there were no alarms in the attic, where the strongest of the flames were
but this is not illegal due to the building being built in 2005
They did not become required until 2020 in New York State
it would need those alarms to pass inspection
The official cause of the fire remains under investigation

The late Rosemary Bucci ran a successful law firm in Baldwinsville for more than 40 years
her will directed more than $1.5 million be given to the Community Foundation to establish a fund that supports charitable organizations in the Baldwinsville area
The estate has finished its work and funds have arrived.
very involved locally with a lot of the communities,” said Linda Cook
Cook is the last one left in the building after Bucci passed away
“Right after Rosemary graduated from Syracuse University Law School
one was ahead of the other one in the law school
they started the business,” Cook said.
Bucci and June Lockwood opened Bucci’s Law Firm in 1963
Cook later joined the practice in 1974.
“Rosemary’s specialty was divorce,” Cook said
Cook says she was still working when she passed
Her endowment was meant to support future generations in the Baldwinsville area.
“When Rosemary came to the Community Foundation about 10 years ago
we sat down with her and one of her advisors and talked about what was important to her,” said Tom Griffith
the vice president of Central New York Community Foundation
a public charity that turns community dollars into community change
He says Bucci named the Central New York Community Foundation the recipient of a more-than $1.5 million endowment to create the Bucci-Deserio Family Foundation.
“That’s going to produce somewhere around $60-70,000 per year forever
resources will get delivered to non-profits in that region,” said Griffith
“Hopefully some good projects that they will come up with,” Cook said
the funds will also support organizations in the towns of Van Buren and Lysander
the place Rosemary Bucci held closest to her heart.
— Eight families were displaced last night after an apartment fire in Baldwinsville
The flames of the fire engulfed the apartments as several people were extracted from a fire Friday night at the Legacy Apartments in Baldwinsville
Now the community is helping to lend a hand to those who lost everything in the fire thanks to a donation drive
After a fire burned through the Legacy Apartments
Several of those families had children who went to the Baldwinsville School District
Superintendent Joe DeBarbieri said that the school district held a donation drive to help families through this hard time
we’ve received a lot of donations today that will go directly to the families and other organizations as needed.”
Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Karrie Lamacchia said that hundreds of students
and Baldwinsville community members turned up to lend a hand by donating clothes
While eight families lost their homes in this fire
DeBarbieri said the community has used this tragedy as a way to come together to show their support for one another
Donations will also be accepted tomorrow at the District Operations Building on 29 East Oneida Street
Due to the overwhelming amount of donations Baldwinsville received
they are now only looking for donations of non-perishable food items
Baldwinsville needs to fully assess what has already been received in gently used items before accepting any more gently used donations
— The Baldwinsville Central School District put several of its schools on lockdown & lock-out over what it says is an abundance of caution after a suspicious person was reported inside Baker High School
The district tells CNY Central police were called to Baker High School around 3:00 p.m
when reports of the person first came into the building
25-year-old Jack Grippe entered the building during dismissal while students were leaving the building
When an administrator in the main office spoke to Grippe
Once police arrived and confirmed the man was no longer in the building
they then searched room-by-room as a precaution
Police found Grippe at his home in Baldwinsville and placed under arrest
he is charged with trespassing and will appear in village court on October 16
Nearby Elden Elementary and Durgee Junior High were placed into a lock-out during this time for student and faculty safety
The below letter was sent to parents from the Baldwinsville Superintendent:

— Cicero-North Syracuse baseball’s blazing hot start to the season was put on pause thanks to a weeklong break prior to Monday’s clash with Baldwinsville
The Northstars entered the contest with a perfect 4-0 record
The only team they trailed in Class AAA was a 5-0 Bees squad
but the Northstars managed to shake off some early rust to nab a 5-3 victory in the battle of unbeatens
“Going into this game we knew Baldwinsville was undefeated on the season and playing a really good style of baseball,” C-NS coach Stephan Bailey said
“We knew we were going to have to bring it.”
Baldwinsville’s perfect record through five games was its best start since 2019
The Bees were rolling behind one of the most prolific defenses in Section III
Bees starting pitcher Ben Leaton kept the Northstars’ bats at bay early on
The senior shut down C-NS his first time through the lineup
and a combination of errors and passed balls put the Northstars up by two runs
“Not to say these guys didn’t work their tails off
but when you’re not competing against somebody with a different color jersey
we do lose focus a little bit,” Bailey said
The squads traded rallies over the next couple of innings
Landon Cook replaced Kalfass as the Northstars’ hurler for the final three innings
The senior started off solid and managed to improve as he faced more batters
Cook struck out the side in the seventh to seal the game for C-NS
but because I had guys behind me that would make every play.”
Kalfass fanned eight batters while giving up just one hit for the Northstars
Cook’s outing was just as impressive with five strikeouts and no runs allowed
C-NS’s offense was propelled by another stellar outing from shortstop Jaden Zimmer
The junior walked in his first at-bat and singled in his other two
Zimmer bumped his season batting average up to .600 thanks to the multi-hit performance
“I’m just trying not to do too much at the plate and do my job all the time,” Zimmer said
1/74Baldwinsville vs Cicero-North Syracuse boys varsity baseball(Robert Grossman | Contributing Photographer) The win was C-NS’s tenth-straight victory over Baldwinsville
The Northstars’ last loss to the Bees was in 2021
C-NS and Baldwinsville don’t have to wait long before another clash
The Bees have the chance to even up the season series against the Northstars in Baldwinsville on Tuesday
“We’re a veteran squad that has a lot of pieces back this year and we’re still figuring it out,” Bailey said
“We’re still finding those little ways to continue to get better each and every day.”

BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. — A 25-year-old man was inside C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville for about 30 minutes before staff interacted with him, according to Baldwinsville Police Chief Michael Lefancheck.
On Monday, the Baldwinsville Central School District placed the high school on lockdown and the other nearby schools on lockouts due to a "suspicious person" making it inside the high school. Baker went on lockdown, with students still inside not dismissed until after 5 p.m. The bulk of the student body had left at normal time; those left behind in the lock down were there for after-school activities.
Nora Carson, a neighbor in the area, said the intersection at Virginia Street and East Oneida Street marking the entrance to the district campus was filled with anxious parents for two hours Monday afternoon. They were unable to enter the campus, initially provided with little information.
"It was almost frantic," Carson said. "They didn't know what was going on."
That person was later arrested and identified as Jack Grippe, who police now believe had no ill intent. Lefancheck said Grippe is a graduate of the high school, returning to the campus on Monday with a basketball in hand because he was feeling "nostalgic."
Lefancheck said that, based on surveillance footage and the interview with Grippe, he first tried to go to the gym but found the doors locked. From there, he used a restroom, walking around the school for about 30 minutes. At that point, Lefancheck said, staff members spoke to him and took him to the main office.
According Buckshot, Grippe lied to multiple people inside the high school about who he was, claiming he was a new transfer student. Once he was taken to the main office, Lefancheck said an administrator explained to Grippe that the school would have to contact police, and he got nervous and ran. This prompted the lockdown response from the district.
Later that evening. Lefancheck's officers located and arrested Grippe, charging him with trespassing before releasing him on his own recognizance. He's due to appear Oct. 16 in Baldwinsville Village Court. Lefancheck said police searched his car and home, finding no further evidence that he intended to cause harm or had access to weaponry.
Buckshot confirmed that Grippe called each individual school Tuesday to apologize for any panic caused. He is now banned from district property.
On Sept. 26 during a public hearing, district personnel discussed hiring a private unarmed security guard from Arrow Security to help monitor the main entrance. Right now, as they did last school year, staff members are charged with monitoring that entrance. The district was unable to hire a sentry at the start of the school year.
Buckshot confirmed that a school resource officer, staffed via the Baldwinsville Police Department, is on hand at each school in the district this year.
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. — The Baldwinsville Police Department arrested two teaching assistants from the Baldwinsville Central School District for misconduct against a student in a wheelchair.
The Police Department said Kimberly S. Harrison, 57, of Baldwinsville is facing a charge of endangering the welfare of an incompetent or disabled person in the first degree. The second teaching assistant, Timberly L. Woods, 36, is facing a charge of official misconduct, police said.
The department said the charges stem from an investigation into an incident that occurred at Durgee Junior High School on Jan. 23, where the two suspects had an interaction with a wheelchair-bound student.
According to police, it is alleged that during her interaction with the student, Harrison was intentionally rough with them while attempting to strap the student into their wheelchair, causing "bruising and pain."
Police said it's alleged that Woods was present when the incident happened but didn't try to stop Harrison from "continuing her actions." Woods also didn't report the suspected abuse to school officials even though she was required to do so as a mandated reporter.
A letter sent home to parents from the Baldwinsville School District said it was cooperating with police during the investigation into the matter and that the safety and security of its students is its priority.
The two were processed and released on their recognizance to appear in Baldwinsville Justice Court.
Harrison is scheduled for Feb. 26 and Woods is scheduled for Feb. 19.

— A couple in Baldwinsville has a fifty-thousand-dollar mess in their yard after accused serial scammer Dakota Smith conned them out of work they paid for
Authorities say Smith has done damage in Saratoga and Albany as well
Construction is underway to fix the damage that has been done by a contractor who scammed this family out of fifty thousand dollars
With the rain that has been coming to the area
this family is just hoping that their house will keep standing until work is done to fix it
Edward and Theresa Polimeni were looking to add a master bedroom to their house filled with four children under 11 and two dogs
The couple went on an app called Next Door and found contractor Dakota Smith
who would build the addition and offered to do a basement for more money
Edward Polimeni said that Smith excavated the land and made a hole for the additions that were never built
they stopped believing it was the concrete company's fault
Theresa did some research on the internet and found a Dakota who had done several scams in the Albany-Saratoga area
“I spent all night digging into everything about him and then
we decided to wait a few days and we confronted him with everything that we found.”
Smith told the couple that he came from a bad family
The aftermath is that the house is being held up with a car jack as the foundation falls away in desperate need of help
We are just trying to go day by day,” said Edward Polimeni
Theresa said they have had to sit down with their kids and have tough conversations about what happened
But with concerns over their family's safety
The family has started a GoFundMe page looking for any extra help they could get to fix their house and keep it safe for their children. The link to donate to that can be found by clicking here.
