Share your story idea with Rachel held a groundbreaking Tuesday for the first new grocery store in the city in over a decade full-sized Fareway Meat & Grocery store in the state by the end of the year will offer a full-service butcher counter at the Basehor location The Basehor location will be the company’s 141st location and have approximately 65 full time employees while offering some part time positions as well the build and purchase of the land was approximately $8 million The new location will also offer a self-checkout option “This community has been wanting a grocery store forever,” said Basehor Mayor Dick Drennon Ron Davids was one of the residents asking that question "It’s a need that we’ve had for several years here," Davids said and I just wanted to be here and support the folks that have made this happen." The 21,000 square-foot store will be the first full-sized Fareway store in Kansas “It’s been a long time coming,” Drennon said “I don’t have to run to Bonner or Wyandotte County anymore to pick up a can of beans The closest grocery stores are in KCK's Village West area and in Bonner Springs and how lucky are we to be a part of this,” said Reynolds Cramer competitive prices and “the highest level of customer service,” which includes “to-your-car carryout.” “This is the best fit for the city of Basehor,” Drennon said Cramer says Basehor stood out as a place ideal for a partnership because of the mutual benefit the company and the city share we were shocked to see no grocery store,” Cramer said which is over 1,000 more people than the last U.S and I just like to see people thrive,” said Michelle Meyer which sits right across the street from the new grocery store site “I’m interested in what happens on our corner.” Meyer says she’s been in Basehor a long time and has seen a couple grocery stores in town She’s excited about Fareway’s reputation and having a new neighbor “I think that this community’s experiencing a lot of growth,” Meyer said “And a lot of people are coming from more urban areas where they’re used to the amenities of a grocery store.” Growth is something Michael Roe can attest to seeing “It’s just wonderful to see them be in a community that listens to their citizens; that provides resources for them,” said Michael Roe He and his family moved to Basehor in 2021 after being impressed by the school district but he’s worked in the community since 2016 with the Fairmount Township Fire Department “This’ll be huge for all of our guys working having somewhere right here in town where we can get meals for work and it’ll just be great for the entire community,” Roe said The project also comes at no cost to the city Basehor approved a $1.9 million economic development grant to Fareway Stores to be paid solely through rebates of the city's share of sales tax and property taxes generated by the grocery store “We are expecting things to really pop around here once the grocery store opens,” Drennon said “There’s all kinds of people that’s been wanting to bring their businesses out here I think this is going to put them over the edge.” Meyer says she can’t speak for every Basehor resident but her mindset is the same for every decision she supports Report a typo Fareway will start construction soon on its first full-size grocery store in the Kansas City metro area Johnston-based Fareway plans to open the 21,000-square-foot store in Basehor a fast-growing suburban city of nearly 8,000 about 20 miles west of Kansas City It will break ground on the store March 4 aiming to open in the late summer or early fall The store will be anchored by its meat counter "Kansas City is known for BBQ and they expect quality meats," he said "We’re excited to give them the best in the Midwest." Fareway announced plans for the store in February 2024 Fareway CEO Reynolds Cramer said the location "is a great fit for both the city and Fareway." "From the first introduction to the community and the support we’ve received at every stage "All involved made this an easy decision to make Basehor home to our first full-service grocery store in Kansas." Fareway first moved into the Kansas City metro area in 2020 when it bought a Kansas City neighborhood market and rebranded the store with its small-format Fareway Meat Market concept The company later opened other Kansas City-area meat markets in Liberty But Cramer has long had his sights set on opening a full-size store in the Kansas City area More: Fareway, Iowa's other grocery chain, expands to Kansas City, eyes Wisconsin The Kansas City grocery market is dominated by Price Chopper and Hy-Vee Fareway's larger West Des Moines-based rival Fareway also is still trying to expand to new parts of Iowa and other states it already has stores in, growing from its current 140 stores in seven states to 200 by 2030, according to Kramer. In the fall, employees from the company scoped out sites for the first Fareway store in Wisconsin. The company plans to double its current growth pace of five to six stores per year through a mix of building new stores and buying existing ones 7 it was doing by acquiring Brothers Market locations in the Iowa towns of Lisbon and Denver and converting them to Fareways The accelerated expansion comes as Fareway last fall moved its headquarters from its longtime home Philip Joens covers retail and real estate for the Des Moines Register pjoens@registermedia.com or on Twitter @Philip_Joens is sponsoring a petition to reduce the speed limit along US-24/US-40 Highway from 142nd Street to 171st Street from 65 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour It's not the first time the city has asked the Kansas Department of Transportation to consider reducing the speed limit along this highway which is bordered on each side by two 50-mile-per-hour speed limit signs The city requested KDOT conduct an engineering study which is the first step changing a posted speed limit on a state highway covered US-24/40 from 142nd Street to 166th Street within Basehor’s city limits A speed study was a part of the overall engineering study and speed was collected at locations from 142nd to 166th street the 85th percentile free-flow speed was found to be between 65 and 70.2 miles per hour This means KDOT determined the existing speed limit was appropriate for the roadway and roadway context and the new speed limit did not get the green light Basehor hoped for "KDOT continues to monitor the US-24/US-40 corridor and is committed to revisiting the recent engineering study with a follow-up study when additional development or other significant changes occur within the study limits," a KDOT spokesperson wrote via email we just disagree on this one item," said Richard Drennon which compares local crash rates to the statewide averages Crash rates represent crashes per million entering vehicles (mev) for intersections and per million vehicle miles (mvm) for segments A critical crash rate is a value used to determine if a location's crash rate is higher than an expected rate If the study location's crash rate is higher than the critical crash rate KDOT says that's an indicator there may be a safety concern If it's at or less than the critical crash rate it implies the rate doesn't differ much from the statewide average rate there were 99 total crashes from 2018-2022 along US-24/40 from 142nd Street to 166th Street "The citizens of this town deserve better," Drennon said "If we can save — in the next five years — one life I think we're going to save a lot more lives by lowering the speed limit." The study split the stretch up into intersections: US-24/US-40 and 142nd None of those locations were above the critical rate — except for two: 155th Street and the whole 142nd to 166th segment KSHB 41 visited the 155th and State intersection Tuesday and saw at least two cars get pulled over along that stretch from speeding Drennon's memories there are a bit more traumatizing "I had a procedure done Friday on my heart due to the wreck." He and his wife were t-boned at the 155th and State intersection in October 2024 His grandson was also involved in an accident at 158th and State where he was hit by a dump truck full of gravel "This is not only just personal for my family but it’s personal for the whole city of Basehor," Drennon said it knows of nine accidents on this highway since Drennon's accident in October "We've actually been trying to get the speed limit lowered for 17 years," Drennon said He sat on the city council before he was mayor and says this topic came up often It's why he says he hosted an informational meeting with over 40 community leaders and four Basehor-Linwood High School students who gave personal accounts about their experiences with the US-24/US-40 and 155th Street intersection Amy McKissick works at the high school and raised her children in Basehor that road was the reason that we got Life360 so that we could track them on the way to school and see that they made it," McKissick said "It's a dangerous stretch and a fast-paced road." But the toughest road McKissick’s travelled isn't this highway we lost a part of our world that day," McKissick said McKissick says Cheyanne Branson was like her second daughter before Branson was killed by a drunk driver on Highway 24 in November 2022 "He was going, they assume, 75-plus [miles per hour] because of the damages," said Christina Branson, Cheyanne's mother. KSHB 41's Caroline Hogan spoke with her in December 2024 can result in fatal outcomes like Cheyanne's It's why she has mixed feelings about the city's petition "It's not really a speed limit problem anymore it's more of a people problem," McKissick said Distracted driving becomes a crime quickly If highway patrol or the sheriff's office does the arrest Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson's office gets involved As someone who lives and works in the area Thompson says it’s only a matter of time before Basehor’s slogan One of the major developments coming to town in March 2025 is Fareway Meat & Grocery which will sit on the north side of the highway between 155th and 158th Street one of the comments regarding the development says "the city is wanting the speed limit lowered so a new access point could be built on the highway for the development." The following comment says "it is recommend the new development utilizes the road to the north that was designed and built for the existing developments to access the highway via the traffic signals at 155th Street and 158th Street." "We're concerned there's going to be a lot more traffic there," Drennon said "We're just afraid there’s going to even be more accidents if we lower it 15 miles an hour or 30 miles an hour but we’re hoping to reduce the accidents." safety was the primary motivation behind wanting the speed limit reduced When asked to address concerns about the city using a speed limit reduction to enforce more traffic stops and collect more money for tickets "We try to educate drivers as they come through our town but we are going to watch them very closely It's not that we're trying to raise money for the city we feel like it's just a life-saving event." Drennon said Basehor has a good working relationship with KDOT but that he's considering taking the petition to a third party state entity like a senator or governor if this issue remains unresolved we just have a different opinion on what the speed limit should be," Drennon said "We'd just like somebody else to maybe rule and see if they’re wrong days so the mayor says the city plans to leave it open for more people to sign and Drennon says they have no target number "posted speed limits are not impacted by petitions." I know there’s people on Facebook saying that are saying 'We need turn lanes,' but we have to start somewhere Drennon added that the city is willing to pay for any signage necessary to indicate a speed limit change so neither KDOT nor drivers will have to take a financial hit McKissick says she's open to any solution that stops grief from traveling any further "I would hate to have another family lose a member from a senseless accident," she said The petition is now available online at this link on the city's website or in-person at Basehor City Hall 6 May 2025 5:38:53 GMT.Your computer's time: document.write(new Date().toUTCString()); Fareway has broken ground on its first store in Kansas the 21,000-square-foot store will be in Basehor a fast-growing suburb of nearly 8,000 about 20 miles west of Kansas City said previously that the store would be "a great fit for both the city and Fareway." Sorenson a few years ago It was in the signature colored-pencil style she’s become known for throughout large swaths of Chiefs Kingdom This particular drawing caught the eye of Dan Sorenson’s wife “Dan Sorenson's wife reached out to me,” Snelling recalled I love the drawing you did of Dan,’ and I was like But plans to meet in a Costco parking lot to hand off the print hit a snag Snelling was already headed to the meet-up location when Whitney texted her: “Something came up half in shock she was going to meet a Chiefs player then came another text ‘OK,’ and so I went and got an extra one,” Snelling recalled Drawing portraits of Chiefs players in colored pencil started as a decorating necessity at the Snelling family’s former house in Olathe and morphed into a labor of love the basement flooded after a really bad storm so we decided to make it into a Chiefs cave — somewhere cool to watch the games,” she said “When we were looking at artwork for the walls everything related to sports seems really busy and the basement was kind of dark anyway so I didn't want all that busy stuff on the walls I'm more of a simplistic kind of decorations person so we couldn't find exactly what we're looking for.” had what she considered a wild idea at the time You should draw something,’ and it took him about three months of talking me into it until I finally decided to try it,” Snelling “They turned out way better than I expected.” which she started drawing in September 2019 still hang above the TV at the family’s new home in Basehor where Snelling continues to churn out detailed “My typical drawing takes anywhere between 80 and 200 hours,” she said like the life-size drawing former Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson commissioned He wanted Snelling to draw him jumping over a Rams defender That piece took closer to 400 hours over three months — and turned her daughter “It was massive, and she was maybe 2 or 3 (years old), and I would just find her just sitting there talking to the picture,” Snelling, who has attracted sizable followings on Instagram and Twitter “She was very sad when I had to send it off so I made her her own print that still hangs over her bed She was convinced for forever that Chris was her best friend and — he's so nice — he would tell her happy birthday But now she's a Seahawks fan for life because of that.” Snelling’s connection to the Chiefs also is rooted in childhood so we moved all the time and didn't really have a community,” Snelling said and he would be sitting there watching a game and so I would be sitting right up under posted to a few Chiefs groups and people were like you should make prints,’ ‘Can I get a copy of that?’” But the response was so overwhelming that she relented — and now she’s a sought-after NFL artist, whose work is available online to 6-year-old Josephine — one of five children in the Snelling family — she’s still just mom “I love it.” She added that she’s impressed by “how it looks like a picture and I like the colors.” Snelling has even had Chiefs players ask for her autograph “He is a genuinely really nice guy,” she said He was actually the first person to ever ask me for my autograph then I didn't even end up giving him an autograph which — sorry — but he gave me his autograph But it was really cool to have that experience and meet him.” After seeing a picture Snelling drew of him Marquez Valdes-Scantling introduced her to teammates as “my favorite artist” at his charity softball game But she’s still not used to being recognized in public or receiving a note from a players’ family — Patrick Mahomes’ mom Randi — thanking her for a piece she created or having Harrison Butker’s agent reach out to buy a drawing of the kicker Snelling’s favorite Chiefs figure to draw Super Bowl,” Snelling said “I got a phone call at 9 o'clock the next morning what is this?’ It was (Tampa Bay coach) Bruce Arians’ agent and they commissioned a drawing of Bruce with the trophy who is
