When she is not writing she shares vlogs and videos about books and history on her YouTube channel
including “I tried eating like a Victorian child”
Ruby had only been to Bath once before but recently she “had a few days” off so decided to take a trip back
She described it as a “wonderful Georgian city filled with the most beautiful buildings
Her video - titled “I went to Bath… and it felt like an Austen novel” - starts off by her travelling on an open-top bus to her hotel, the luxury 5-star Bath Priory hotel, which starts at £195 a night.
The 25-year-old grinned at the camera saying: “The whole of this hotel is just steeped in history and character.”
Taking a spanning shot of marble busts, warm coloured sofas and walls full of oil painting, she says: ‘’I'm in the drawing room and its so beautifully decorated.”
Early morning mist and low cloud creates patches of light, as the sun begins to shine through, over the Royal Crescent in the city of Bath(Image: PA)Ruby also visited Royal Victoria park. Bordered by blossom trees Ruby tells her vlog: “Spring is the season of Jane Austen. Like Spring is the season, the regency period of the Georgians.
She added: “Spring was definitely the best season to visit Bath. There were just so many green spaces so many gardens, so many flower beds- that Bath seemed to come alive.”
For Ruby, the UNESCO World Heritage Site and preserved golden-coloured Bath stone was one of her biggest takeaways.
She said: “I felt like every corner you turned round there was something new - there was a wonderful Georgian building just waiting there for you.”
The Youtuber also took a day trip to Lacock - home to many famous filming locations.
She said the village was full of “such beautiful cottages”.
Showing a grand, domineering home she said: “This house ahead is the house where Professor Slughorn stayed …like the muggle house when he was hiding.”
The historic and well preserved village of Lacock, in Wiltshire, is popular tourist stop.Lacock was also used to shoot scenes in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice’s “Merseyside”.
She also took a trip to Lacock Abbey, saying: “Wow we can’t even see the abbey yet and I’m impressed”, adding that the flocks of sheep and rolling fields made the locale feel “very atmospheric.”
Explaining that some Harry Potter scenes were filmed in the cloisters, she said the Abbey has “such a rich history”.
She also visited the museum of astronomy and expressed her excitement at spotting an orrery, which she said she loves because they use clockwork.
Orreries are typically driven by a clockwork mechanism with a globe representing the Sun at the centre, and with a planet at the end of each of a series of arms.

A tip that launched a drug investigation for Millcreek Township police led various law enforcement agencies to a west Erie warehouse on March 10 where investigators said they found evidence of an extensive clandestine lab suspected of manufacturing an illicit drug known as bath salts
About 20 pounds of the suspected drug were in various stages of production
and if all those suspected drugs hit the street their estimated value would be close to $2 million
Millcreek police have now charged four people in the investigation
believed to involve the largest suspected clandestine drug making laboratory found in the Erie region since a number of large-scale methamphetamine-making labs were taken down by law enforcement in the late 1990s and early 2000s
Adam D. Hilyer, 38
the same day authorities from several agencies served a search warrant on a warehouse at 1951 Grove Drive and found the suspected lab
Hilyer remained jailed May 5 on charges including felony counts of manufacture
delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver as well as causing a catastrophe
theft and possession of a firearm prohibited
Hilyer is scheduled to appear in court for his preliminary hearing on May 15
Three other people were charged in the investigation on May 1 and were arraigned May 2
was arraigned on one felony count each of manufacture
delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver
conspiracy and criminal use of a communication facility
were arraigned on charges including a felony count of criminal use of a communication facility and two felony counts each of manufacture
delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver and conspiracy
Quiggle and Vining were not listed on their criminal docket sheets May 5
Millcreek police told the Erie Times-News in March that the investigation was launched in September
when township police received a tip through a federal agency
Investigators learned that suspected drug manufacturing was taking place
and the probe led them to the warehouse on Grove Drive
Investigators noted in the criminal complaint against Hilyer that the area where the warehouse sits is considered a drug-free zone because of its close proximity to Harding Elementary School on Lincoln Avenue
More: Titusville man charged after state agents, local police say they seize suspected meth
Millcreek police said they served a search warrant on the warehouse March 10 along with members of the Erie County District Attorney's Drug Task Force; Pennsylvania State Police vice detectives and members of the agency's Special Emergency Response Team and Clandestine Laboratory Response Team; and agents with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation and Drug Control
according to information in Hilyer's criminal complaint
were a large amount of suspected bath salts along with containers containing suspected precursors and products in the process of manufacturing bath salts
suspected drug paraphernalia and three guns
one of which was found to have been stolen
Detectives wrote in the affidavit filed with Vining's criminal complaint that as they were awaiting others to arrive for the March 10 search
they encountered Vining and stopped her vehicle as she attempted to leave the area of the warehouse
They said Vining eventually admitted she was at the warehouse to meet with Hilyer to purchase bath salts
and she was found with a small amount of the drug
Bath salts, the drug the suspects are accused of conspiring to make, are stimulants from the synthetic cathinone class of drugs. They are central nervous stimulants designed to mimic the effects similar to those produced by other drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy, according to information on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's website

The aftermath of the release of Deafheaven’s Sunbather was truly an interesting time
and it certainly heralded the coming of many bands that would explore that particular sound: atmospheric black metal mixed with post-rock
shoegaze and anything else bands would pick and choose
there was a deluge of trend hoppers and wave riders
This project has been going for almost as long as the aforementioned Deafheaven
They started as an anonymous project that claimed to be from China for whatever reason
and by the release of their sophomore and most well known record Moonlover the jig was up
aka Nameless revealed the project was indeed from the US (Minot
North Dakota to be precise) and expanded Ghost Bath into an actual performing band
I wanted to quickly get over the band’s weird history because this is actually the first time I’ve actually sat down to listen to their music
I knew of the whole “pretending to be Chinese” bit
the frequent comparisons to Deafheaven and being one of those love or hate bands
The band has come back with a new album titled Rose Thorn Necklace
Despite being familiar with the lore and going in expecting post-black metal or blackgaze
this record actually surprised me in a lot of ways
this record is way more metallic and fast than even the last Deafheaven record was; it’s also way more depressive and dejected in tone too
this band sounds nothing like Deafheaven on this new album
and since I’ve still been listening to Lonely People With Power
the differences and deviations are way more obvious to me
The album opens with “Grotesque Display,” a somber instrumental piece composed of blaring synths followed by a solitary melancholic piano
so from the get-go the band lulls you into a sense of utter despair
What follows is the title track and this is where I felt as if the rug had been pulled from under my feet given my own preconceptions about this band
The opening of the track has a more gothic vibe than the usual shoegaze and post-rock influence of this style
which then violently morphs into pure depressive black metal
while maintaining the initial goth-tinged melodies
follows this format of quiet and loud dynamics: either a strong
all the while maintaining a very stark sense of melody and a perpetually dour and dejected mood
While I do think Ghost Bath’s style falls into the nebulous “post-black metal” label
and there are parts that do have a shoegaze influence
the various melodic tendencies and influences on the record have more in common with gothic rock and post-punk
particularly in how the synths are used for both textures and as melodic leads
They go beyond even the realms of black metal altogether; the song “Vodka Butterfly” in particular has what I can only describe as an electro breakdown
complete with a synthesized electronica beat and stabbing synths
given how the project leans heavily into very depressive subject matter
it makes sense that the music has gothic overtones
and that significantly enhances the more metallic leanings
When the band locks in and delves into pure aggression
the focus is on the riffs being as hard-hitting as possible
while maintaining a very apparent melodicism that keeps the record in the realm of black metal
this album and Ghost Bath as a whole surprised me; I genuinely didn’t expect a post-black metal record to completely break away from shoegaze and take a wild detour into gothic and electronic directions while simultaneously experimenting with those aforementioned genre detours and a relentlessly depressive mood
On those grounds this record gets a recommendation for me
I also felt a bit overwhelmed and tired by the end
and not because of the album’s themes and atmosphere
The music is genuinely impressive but at some points I felt that so much was happening all at once
especially during the middle section of the album
considering the compact song lengths and how the songwriting and arrangements are done in a way where the music doesn’t overstay its welcome
that feeling of being overwhelmed is kinda intensified
but one that I may need to acclimate to in the near future
Rose Thorn Necklace released May 9 through Nuclear Blast Records
A guy that takes things simultaneously way too seriously and not seriously enough.

Tragedy might have cut Acid Bath's career short in the 90s
colossal alligators… there are plenty of ways to meet a grizzly end
Such mortal perils made it the perfect spawning ground for a nihilistic
scuzzy new strain of metal in the early 90s
But while Eyehategod, Crowbar and Soilent Green helped turn New Orleans into the world’s sludge metal capital
arguably the most groundbreaking band to emerge from that scene came from the backwaters of the Bayou State
“When you’ve got the barrel of a gun pointed at you by God
with hurricanes being thrown at you every year
people don’t worry anymore,” Acid Bath singer Dax Riggs says today
their lyrics painting vivid narratives of mania
madness and death with psychedelic imagery
and they left chaos and controversy in their wake
They released just two albums during their six-year existence
before tragedy cut their career short in 1997
For the next 27 years, they remained the great lost Louisiana band, beloved by underground metal connoisseurs – including Slipknot’s Corey Taylor – but little known by the wider world
the line-up for the third edition of millennial metal megafest Sick New World was announced
Among the many bands on the bill were Acid Bath
Even amid a line-up that included Metallica and Linkin Park
it was their presence that generated the most vocal excitement online
we’d only really do well in Louisiana and the South
We’d go to New York City… there’d be 10 people there.”

“You’d think it would have taken a rest when we put the band to sleep,” Dax marvels
I still get people telling me we recorded their favourite albums
[Adult actress] Stormy Daniels even has our lyrics tattooed on her
It’s a common misconception that Acid Bath took their band name from John Haigh
nicknamed ‘The Acid Bath Murderer’ after killing six people and dissolving their bodies in sulphuric acid in 1940s Britain
The truth is more mundane: they nicked it from a local band who had just split up
“Plus we took a lot of acid,” admits Sammy
They formed in 1991 from a pair of local groups: Dark Karnival (Sammy and bassist Audie Pitre) and Golgotha (Dax
guitarist Mike Sanchez and drummer Jimmy Kyle)
They’d all grown up in various small towns an hour or two’s drive away from New Orleans itself – Houma
“It felt like we were the only people making any kind of extreme music where we were from,” Dax says
“We were outside it all in our creation
We had room to grow the way we were supposed to.”
Acid Bath knew they had to break into the New Orleans scene
They would drive out to the city on a Friday and stay there all weekend
playing late-night showcases where they might not go onstage until 3am
Soon they were packing out the places they played and befriending members of Crowbar and Eyehategod
Word eventually reached Roadrunner Records in New York
who sent a representative to Louisiana to see Acid Bath play
“Word got out and the fans all went berserk,” Dax recalls
“They completely destroyed the bar we were playing and broke a waitress’s leg
but Acid Bath found a home with underground label Rotten Records
they headed to Side One studio in Metairie
it plumbed the darkness under the surface of the Louisiana swamps
Bad-trip songs such as Jezebel and The Bones Of Baby Dolls were filled with images of death
“There’s a very dark vibe here,” Sammy says
“The first settlers used it as a penal colony
Southern Louisiana is where they’d stick their murderers
When The Kite String Pops would subsequently become a cult classic
but at the time it caused ripples rather than waves
Much of the attention it did get centred on the artwork – a painting by infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy
It tied in perfectly with the band’s overall vibe
“I get that we had serial killer references and it made sense on the surface
but to associate it with a particular killer or incident wasn’t a good thing for us.”
The minor controversy surrounding the cover didn’t do them any harm
and the chaos of their New Orleans gig continued on the road
They were denied entry to Canada at the border after turning up without documentation or visas (“Then they found something they weren’t happy with on our bus,” says Sammy
“Let’s leave it at that.”)
“I didn’t get brain damage… I think,” he jokes
where they were supported by a local band wearing weird masks
“It was still very early days for them,” says Sammy
“At the time they’d got a different singer – Corey hadn’t joined yet
Clown was actually the promoter of that show
they still had a lot of that theatricality and Clown was there beating these beer kegs
it’s these fucking guys!’”
It was a more straightahead record than the debut
as did the provocative cover art - this time a painting by controversial euthanasia proponent Jack Kevorkian
An increased melodic focus hinted at bigger commercial ambitions
though not everyone saw it that way - sales of the debut album in the UK had been so poor that Roadrunner
who licensed the album on this side of the Atlantic
just two months after Paegan Terrorism Tactics was released
bassist Audie Pitre was killed in a car accident
He had been out with his parents and younger brother when their car was hit by a drunk driver
Audie and his parents died from their injuries
The rest of the band found out when they met to go and see Cannibal Corpse play a local show
our manager took us aside and told us we needed to talk,” says Sammy
“Audie’s girlfriend called us and she just said
He’s dead.’ I hung up and told the rest of the guys
I’d been friends with him since we were teenagers.”
while Dax sags as he talks about Audie’s loss
“Audie’s the guy who made it all possible,” says the singer
“He was a very kind person and so creative too – ideas poured out of him all the time
He was like a brother to me and it felt like a hopeless situation without him.”
The members of Acid Bath served as pallbearers at his funeral
and they briefly tried to keep the band going
was recruited to play bass and the band booked some shows
But the grief at his passing proved too much
and the rest of Acid Bath found it difficult to play the songs without their friend
A disastrous gig with Crowbar at Shreveport Municipal Auditorium on April 25
the outcome was the same – Acid Bath were done
After Acid Bath’s split, the surviving bandmembers stayed in touch but went in different directions musically. Sammy joined Crowbar for a four-year stint before devoting his attention to his black metal side-project
Dax and guitarist Mike Sanchez initially played together in Agents Of Oblivion
Dax subsequently formed the bluesy Deadboy & The Elephantmen
before going solo with 2007’s We Sing Of Only Blood Or Love
only to drop off the map entirely after the release of 2010’s Say Goodnight To The World
while rumours circulated that Corey had been approached to front an Acid Bath reunion in Dax’s absence
it was another death that partly inspired their reunion
who had played drums in Sammy and Audie’s earlier band
and joined Acid Bath as keyboard player for the last few months of their existence
Sammy was asked by the people behind Sick New World if he’d consider reuniting Acid Bath for the 2025 edition of the festival
“It just put everything in perspective,” Sammy admits
we should do it now while everyone is still around.’”
The Acid Bath reunion was announced in October 2024
plus Goatwhore’s Zack Simmons replacing original drummer Jimmy Kyle
and Dax’s former Agents Of Oblivion bandmate Alex Bergeron on bass
Although Sick New World was later cancelled
Acid Bath’s second coming couldn’t be stopped
More reunion dates were announced at US festivals Sonic Temple
as well as a pair of hometown headline shows at the Fillmore in New Orleans in April
Two subsequent shows were announced at the 4,000-capacity Hollywood Palladium in LA in August - the biggest gigs of their career
Acid Bath held their first practice in almost 30 years
“We didn’t have any of the ‘Oh
We just started playing [Paegan Terrorism Tactics’ opener] Paegan Love Song and burned through it
None of us had said about playing that song
“I kinda just went berserk and decided to go for it,” Dax says with a grin
It’s not as painful as every moment was [after Audie passed].”
Having sold out every show they’ve announced so far
Acid Bath are already bigger now than they were first time around
But they’re non-committal when it comes to recording a new album
“I’m not opposed to creating music with Mike and Dax again – I’d love that
But I’d be very hesitant to call it Acid Bath,” says Sammy
“But when you’re jamming together
eventually you get bored of just doing the same songs over and over
That’s when you end up writing new music.”
but I do think it’d need to be done as something else,” Dax agrees
“My dream of the third Acid Bath record was a very doomy trip
It’s like a giant psychedelic weapon.”
The second coming of Acid Bath officially begins on April 25
with the first of those two hometown shows (the second follows on April 30)
Whether this reunion is a belated victory lap or the start of something bigger remains to be seen
this band from the wilds of Louisiana are finally and deservedly getting their time in the sun

Maine (WGME) -- A pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a pickup truck while crossing a street in Bath
Police say a 27-year-old Bath man was crossing Commercial Street in the crosswalk around 6:40 a.m
on Thursday near the intersection with King Street and the on-ramp to the Route 1 bridge when he was hit by a GMC Sierra driven by a 23-year-old Wiscasset man
The pedestrian was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious but non-life-threatening injuries
Police say it appears glare from the morning sun contributed to the crash
There were no signs of impairment involving the driver or pedestrian

involving spins interacting with a bath of quantum harmonic oscillators
is a widely used representation of open quantum systems that describe many dissipative processes in physical
Trapped ions present an ideal platform for simulating the quantum dynamics of such models
by accessing both the high-quality internal qubit states and the motional modes of the ions for spins and bosons
We demonstrate a fully programmable method to simulate dissipative dynamics of spin-boson models using a chain of trapped ions
where the initial temperature and the spectral densities of the boson bath are engineered by controlling the state of the motional modes and their coupling with qubit states
Our method provides a versatile and precise experimental tool for studying open quantum systems
which can lead to new quantum simulation approaches that reach beyond classically tractable limit
The spin-boson model describes a spin coupled to a continuous bath of quantum harmonic oscillators
where J(ω) is the spectral density of the bath
\(\hat{a}(\omega )\) is the annihilation operator of the bath oscillator at frequency ω
and \({\hat{H}}_{S}=\frac{\epsilon }{2}{\hat{\sigma }}_{Z}+\frac{\Delta }{2}{\hat{\sigma }}_{X}\) and \({\hat{H}}_{B}=\int_{0}^{\infty }d\omega \omega {\hat{a}}^{{{\dagger}} }(\omega )\hat{a}(\omega )\) are the Hamiltonian of the spin and the bath
ϵ and Δ are the detuning and coupling strength between the spin states
We assume that the spin is initially in the \(| 0\rangle\) state (or the “donor” state in the energy transfer model) and the time evolution of the Hamiltonian induces population transfer to the \(| 1 \rangle\) state (or the “acceptor” state)
Each bath oscillator of frequency ω is in the thermal state of average phonon number \(\bar{n}(\omega )=1/({e}^{\beta \omega }-1)\)
where β is the inverse of the temperature (kB = 1 for simplicity)
we consider a spin coupled to several oscillators subject to constant dephasing ("dephased” spin-oscillator model)
This discrete oscillator model is described by the Hamiltonian
this bath of dephased oscillators is assigned a spectral density composed of Lorentzian peaks
where we assume that each oscillator is initially in the thermal state with average phonon number \(\bar{n}({\nu }_{l})\)
For the case of biased spin-boson models in the stronger coupling regime (ϵ ≠ 0
the dynamics of the dephased spin-oscillator model we simulate can deviate significantly from the traditional spin-boson model
The dephased oscillator model developed in this work expands the ability to simulate a broader set of bath models not experimentally accessible before
The ions are confined in a micro-fabricated surface trap
The spin states are encoded as the hyperfine clock states (qubit states) and the bosonic bath modes are encoded as the collective radial motional modes of the ion chain
We strategically use the center ion and the three symmetric modes (except for the center-of-mass mode
as shown in the upper left corner) in the experiment to minimize cross-mode couplings (see Methods)
The laser frequencies for the SDK operations are determined by the frequency difference between the two Raman beams
and are depicted by the red and blue lines on the frequency axis detuned by δm from the mode frequency ωm
with the color gradients indicating the random frequencies used to implement the decoherence simulation
Details of the procedure is described in Methods
a Dynamics of the coherent spin-single oscillator model \({\hat{H}}_{D}\) with various values of average phonon number \(\bar{n}\) for the oscillator’s initial state
b Dynamics of the model with \(\bar{n}=0\)
J(ω) = JLo(ω) (single peak) and various values of Γ1 ≡ Γ
Lines and dots represent theoretical predictions and experimental data
The error bars (size comparable to the symbols in these two plots) denote measured standard deviation over 20 trials
each trial performed with randomly drawn set of parameters and repeated 100 times
Predictions of the original (solid line) model and the noise-aware (dashed line) model are compared with the experimental results (circles)
d Measured values of \(\bar{n}\) fitted to the predictions of the noise-aware model
The solid line depicts \(y=x+{\bar{n}}_{0}\)
where \({\bar{n}}_{0}=0.036\) is the expected offset in the phonon number due to imperfect cooling
e Measured values of Γ fitted to the theoretical predictions with \(\bar{n}={\bar{n}}_{0}\)
the blue and brown shaded regions represent the expected uncertainty of the value when the populations are averaged over 20 and 200 random trials
f Lorentzian spectral densities for various target (solid) and fitted (dashed) values of Γ
The shaded region represents the expected uncertainty of Γ when averaged over 20 random trials
This shows that well-characterized experimental noise can serve as the baseline values for the thermal excitation and dephasing rate in the open quantum system model
and thus is not always a bottleneck for the accuracy of our simulations
Figure 2 b illustrates the dynamics for various values of Γ between 0 and 0.4Δ
which exhibit a crossover from underdamped to overdamped dynamics as Γ is increased (critical damping condition at Γ ≈ 0.18Δ)
As the damping is increased beyond the critical point
the beat-note that signifies the excitation transfer from the spin to boson back to spin is suppressed
and there is a monotonic decrease in the oscillation of the donor population in the overdamped regime
We notice a π phase flip in the oscillation of the donor population in the beat-note in the underdamped case
signified by the phase difference between the underdamped and overdamped cases at t ≈ 2π/Δ × 10
We further simulate the spin-boson models inspired by Leggett et al.1
The spectral density of the bath is given by
a Spectral densities of the Leggett’s model. Dot-dashed curves are the sub-Ohmic (s = 0.5), Ohmic (s = 1.0), and super-Ohmic (s = 2.0) spectral densities described by Eq. (4) (A = 0.1
Solid curves are the spectral densities simulated in our experiments using two motional modes
These spectral densities are designed to match the dot-dashed curves near ω = Δ
Insets compare the solid and dot-dashed curves within the interval ω ∈ [0.85Δ
(b)(c)(d) Dynamics of the spin-boson model for s = 0.5
The solid curves represent the theoretical predictions of the spin-boson models with spectral densities given by the solid curves in (a)
The red dashed curves are expected results
derived from numerical simulations of the density matrix of the qubit and motional modes subject to control operations and hardware noise
Circles denote experimental data and error bars indicate the standard deviation over 60
respectively (More trials were needed to overcome the shot noise in (b) when the donor population is near 0.5)
Finally, we simulate the VAET model24 with nonzero energy detuning ϵ between the spin states
Here we set the spin parameters as Δ = 30cm−1 and ϵ = 100cm−1
In the absence of coupling to a vibrational mode (κ = 0cm−1)
energy transfer between the detuned spin states is suppressed; however
the energy transfer can be activated if the mode frequency ν meets the resonance condition (single mode’s index l = 1 omitted)
b Time evolution of the donor-state population for coherent VAET models with κ = 30 cm−1
Solid and dashed curves depict theoretical predictions of the ideal target and the noise-aware model
Circles represent experimental data and error bars are the standard deviation over 100 repetitions
bath temperature is fixed at 0 K (\(\bar{n}=0\)) and ν is varied
ν is fixed to the resonant value 104 cm−1 and two temperatures 0 K and 300 K
c Time evolution of the donor-state population for dissipative VAET models with ν = 104 cm−1 and Γ = 10cm−1 at 0 K
Solid and dot-dashed curves depict theoretical predictions of the dephased spin-oscillator model and the damped spin-oscillator model
error bars indicate the standard deviation over 100 repetitions
error bars indicate the standard deviation over 20 trials
each trial performed with a randomly drawn set of parameters and repeated 100 times
the dephased and damped models’ dynamics deviate
the dephased model does not extract energy from the spin-oscillator system
so the donor population will not decay towards zero even after a long time evolution when coupled to a single-oscillator bath
This example demonstrates that our method provides the ability to simulate a wider range of dissipative channels in the study of open system dynamics
Developing various control methods over these quantum systems to study important physical
biological and material systems of critical interest will open up a new computational framework in science
the long-chain trapped-ion systems can provide a versatile platform for simulating dynamics of complex open quantum systems
Novel and efficient methods to characterize the boson modes or spin-boson correlations are highly desired
The experiments are performed using a linear chain of 171Yb+ ions. We use the hyperfine energy levels \(| 0 \rangle \equiv | F=1;{m}_{F}=0 \rangle\) and \(| 1 \rangle \equiv | F=0;{m}_{F}=0 \rangle\) in the 2S1/2 manifold as the qubit states (spin states). The collective radial motional modes of the ion chain are used to represent the bosonic bath modes (see Fig. 6a).
a Simplified energy levels of the 171Yb+ ion and the laser pulses used for implementing the on-resonance spin-dependent kick (SDK) operation
The global beam consists of two tones driving the blue sideband (BSB) and red sideband (RSB) transitions
accompanied by the individual beam (green arrow)
b Visualization of the motional-state evolution in phase space when a SDK operation of duration τ is applied
where the qubit is in the eigenstate of the operator \({\hat{\sigma }}_{{\phi }_{s}}\equiv {\hat{\sigma }}_{+}{e}^{i{\phi }_{s}}+{\hat{\sigma }}_{-}{e}^{-i{\phi }_{s}}\)
\({\hat{\sigma }}_{+}\) (\({\hat{\sigma }}_{-}\)) is the raising (lowering) operator of the qubit
ϕs (ϕm) is the spin (motion) phase of the laser beams
\(\tilde{\Omega }\) is the Rabi frequency of the sideband transition
c Normalized eigenvector components of each motional mode
which represent the relative ion-mode coupling strengths
Motional-mode frequencies are shown in the lower right corner of each panel
the qubit-state population is accessed via the state-dependent detection technique
The Lamb-Dicke parameters of the 7 motional modes range from 0.073 to 0.079 due to their different frequencies. The relative ion-mode coupling strengths (normalized eigenvector components) are shown in Fig. 6c
We strategically use the center ion of a 7-ion chain
as it exhibits negligible coupling to the 2nd
This arrangement maximizes the effective spacing between the motional-mode frequencies and therefore suppresses cross-mode coupling (driving modes that are not targeted by the SDK operation)
The evolution of \({\hat{H}}_{D}\) in Eq. (2) is mapped to a sequence of single-qubit rotations and SDK operations via Trotterization
After conjugating \({\hat{H}}_{D}\) with a Hadamard gate on the qubit
the Hamiltonian can be described in the interaction picture as
Heating and dephasing are used to tune the initial temperature and spectral linewidth of the bath
‘H’ represents the Hadamard gate on the qubit. ‘Kick (heat)’ represents the SDK operations with random ϕm that prepare the thermal state on average. ‘SQ’ and ‘Kick (coh/dep)’ represent the single-qubit rotations and SDK operations that simulate the first and second terms in Eq. (5)

BATH TWP. — Attorneys for Bath Community Schools and the parents of a boy who injured a girl during a playground incident told a federal judge a lawsuit by the girl's parents should be dismissed because the boy is not an employee of the district and her injuries were an accident
through their Rochester Hills-based attorney Andre Sokolowski
claim their daughter was purposefully "viciously attacked" at school during a field day event
They filed a federal complaint against the school district
The girl's parents say the boy "violently plowed” into her and left her with a fractured nose
Both were students at the middle school at the time
Sokolowski claims the boy who knocked the girl to the ground was known to school officials to "bully" and "attack" other students
and that the district either did not have an anti-bullying policy or did not follow it
he noted the girl's mom said the district didn't alert her to the severity of her daughter's injury after the incident
David Nelson and Andrew Odette with the East Lansing-based law firm Willingham and Cote
pushed back on Sokolowski's claims about what happened
Nelson and Odette argued in their response that the boy was not known to be violent or a bully and what happened was an accident
Nelson and Odette also argue the case should be dismissed because the boy and his family did not mean to cause the girl emotional distress
The State Journal is not naming the children involved because they are minors
and is not naming the girl's mother to protect her daughter's identity
Bath schools officials have not commented to the State Journal on the lawsuit
Kenneth Chapie and Lindsay Hazen of the Troy-based law firm Giarmarco
denied district officials did anything wrong in regards to the incident in their response filed April 11
The boy did not exhibit behavior that made him a danger to other students and there was no way school officials could not have known what was going to happen
Chapie and Hazen added that the because the injuries to the girl were not caused by someone employed at the district
the district could not be held liable for them
Chapie and Hazen also said district officials
including named defendants Bath Middle School Principal Lorenda Jonas and Superintendent Chris Hodges
acted as they were expected to in handling the girl's injuries and alerting her parents
all district officials were immune from the lawsuit
A statement from the girl's mother in the initial complaint filed in January said during the middle school's field day on June 4
two boys ran at her "at her full force" and "the next thing she knew she was on the ground with a puddle of blood below her." She added that after her daughter was injured
the district did not immediately notify her or her husband
or inform them of the full extent of their daughter’s injuries
The girl’s mom said she was contacted at 10:30 a.m
and told her daughter had a bloody nose and school officials could not stop the bleeding
The mom asked the principal to call back in 10 minutes
and was told that school staff “pretty much had (the bleeding) under control but it hadn't stopped yet,” and the principal offered to give the girl a ride home
The girl's mom claims school officials were reluctant to allow her to speak with her daughter
and that she had to ask twice before her daughter was put on the phone
she said she realized her daughter had more than a bloody nose because her nose was swollen
did not provide any information on what happened to cause the injuries
Her daughter complained of pain in her head on the ride home
and her mom was able to piece together details of what happened when other parents called to check on her daughter
The next day the girl’s mom and dad met with Hodges
was aware of an incident but did not know the specifics
The girl was later treated for a concussion and problems with her inner ear
The complaint was initially filed in the Eastern District of Michigan and transferred to the Western District where the school district and the students' families live

fittingly titled “Come Back to Your Senses,” centers on the power of scent to ground us in the present moment
Between filming the third season of Shrinking and diving into new hobbies (she’s been learning the guitar and reading more physical books)
Williams has been focused on disconnecting from screens and reconnecting with her body and mind
“I’ve been trying to be more intentional,” she says
It’s wearing perfume even if I’m not going anywhere
It’s the feeling of something you can actually touch.”
Her go-to scent from the Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy collection? Lavender Vanilla
and then I stole it back from her,” she laughs
“I love how they have everything—the lotion
There’s something so satisfying about scooping up the whole set
Williams also swears by a ritual of lighting candles morning and night
Then after I walk my dog and settle in for the night
I light another one, ” she says
It makes me feel like my house smells like me
give me a candle that smells like cider or pine and I’m in heaven.” She’s also a fan of scents like lavender and bergamot
wait a minute—why is this working so well?”
“Scent is such a powerful way to check in with yourself
How am I feeling?’ I layer my fragrances like I layer my mood,” she says
“I always start with cocoa and shea butter—it’s nostalgic and grounding—and then I build from there
“being ashy is a construct,” she’s dead serious about the confidence that comes with soft
and it brings me back to myself.” In general
and do something that connects me to the present—like practicing guitar or writing
That’s how I take care of me.” Now that’s grown woman luxury

Kay de Wolf extended his MX2 championship lead with a gritty second overall at Águeda
as Liam Everts endured a weekend to forget in brutal mud-soaked conditions
Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing weathered the storm – quite literally – at Round 7 of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship in Águeda
Celebrating 40 years since hosting its first ever MXGP event
the iconic Crossódromo Internacional de Águeda was hit by torrential rain on Sunday morning
flooding the 1630-metre hard-pack track and forcing a delayed start
every outing turned into a gruelling battle of attrition against deep ruts and axle-deep mud that tested both riders and machines to the absolute limit
Following a solid fourth in Saturday’s qualifying
Kay de Wolf headed into Sunday with confidence – and proved once again why he’s wearing the Red Plate
the Dutchman was quickly into podium contention before a mid-race crash and goggle issues slowed his charge
muscling into second with just two laps remaining
only to be edged out by Simon Längenfelder in the closing moments
De Wolf crossed the line in third after a punishing
Race Two saw a more measured ride from the Husqvarna star
he posted the fastest lap of the race and kept the pressure on at the front
A small crash late on threatened to derail his charge again
but he regrouped swiftly and held off late advances from Längenfelder to secure another third-place finish – and with it
de Wolf maintains his grip on the MX2 championship lead
It was a far more difficult weekend for Liam Everts
who arrived in Portugal looking to replicate his winning form at the Portuguese venue from 2024
After grabbing the Holeshot and the early lead in Race One
disaster struck with a first-lap crash that jammed his front brake
with further mistakes leaving him 11th at the flag
an early fall saw him stuck on the side of the track in the deep mud
forcing an early retirement and capping off a frustrating weekend for the Belgian racer
Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing leaves Portugal with the MX2 championship lead intact and momentum building behind de Wolf
The team now looks ahead to Round 8 in Lugo
“That was one of the toughest GPs we’ve had so far this season
The conditions were just brutal – deep mud
I did my best to stay consistent and ride smart
In the first moto I had a crash and some goggle problems
but I kept pushing and managed to get back to third
The second moto was similar – I had to dig deep after a small crash
but I stayed focused and held onto another podium
I’m happy to come away with second overall and keep the red plate
I felt really good coming to Portugal – I’ve had great memories here – and grabbing the Holeshot in the first moto was a good start
The second moto was short-lived with a crash
I’ll regroup with the team and come back stronger in Spain.”

We all know Toronto condos are notoriously tiny
When you’re already practically living in a shoebox
real estate is precious in every single little space
even the bathroom and shower (which are often also quite small)
who became alarmed not only by the bath and body products piling up and cluttering her space
but also by the amount of plastic they represented
overlooked problem in beauty,” Raffiuddin tells YourCityWithIN.com
“The waste we don’t see.”
She wanted to find a way to combat the billions of single-use plastics and millions of wasted litres of water that come from creating beauty products
and even fight food waste by incorporating discarded materials into products
“Everything we create either saves water
or upcycles food waste and still works just as well
than the top global brands,” says Raffiuddin
She’s actually been working in beauty for over 10 years but has also worked across many industries
doing everything from working at startups to leading global campaigns
nothing truly prepares you for entrepreneurship
and forces you to grow in ways no job ever could
The only thing that keeps you grounded is the why
it’s our mission and the people we serve
every customer who tells us they feel proud to make the switch
even on the hardest days,” says Raffiuddin
from product innovation to marketer to chief executive officer
But I wouldn’t trade it for anything
Building something that genuinely helps people feel good and do good at the same time
it’s a dream that’s been nearly three years in the making
Over 120 formulas were tested just to make Glow Green’s first products a reality
or upcycles food waste,” says Raffiuddin
Raffiuddin basically set out to do just that
creating products with the water removed that could be rehydrated at home
“The machines and systems needed to develop powder-based formulas that lather
and feel amazing on the skin just don’t exist in most beauty labs
and most manufacturers didn’t know how to do it
or flat-out didn’t believe in our idea,” says Raffiuddin
Water wasn’t the only thing she wanted to remove from Glow Green Co
committing to avoiding over 1,700 ingredients
presenting significant formulation challenges
And what about all that wasteful packaging that inspired her in the first place
“Most body wash bottles are narrow and nearly impossible to reuse or refill
So we custom-designed our own mold,” she says
“We were turned away by supplier after supplier.”
All those challenges were worth it in the end
launched recently they sold out much faster than expected
“For a small brand with limited manufacturing capacity
that was both a challenge and a huge sign that we were onto something,”
“We’ve had customers DM us saying it’s the first time they’ve used a sustainable product that actually feels luxurious and effective
People are proud to display it in their showers
and that’s exactly what we hoped for,” says Raffiuddin
“We’ve received five-star reviews from across Canada
and some of our earliest customers have already reordered
It’s proof that people aren’t just willing to make the switch
we had one of our TikToks go viral and just that one video got hundreds of Canadians from coast to coast to discover us and place an order with us.”
Glow Green is planning on capitalizing on that momentum
expanding their line and hoping to eliminate millions of single-use plastics and save millions of litres of water in the process
The next product they’re launching is a moisturizer made with 96 per cent upcycled ingredients from Mediterranean food and veggie scraps that hydrates
boosts collagen and protects against environmental stressors
one that’s excited about refill culture
and changing the industry from the inside out,” says Raffiuddin
“Smart design and conscious choices can completely reshape what beauty looks like in the future.”
Bath and Lyon will contest the 2024/25 Challenge Cup final at the Principality Stadium after the pair beat Edinburgh and Racing 92 respectively in their semi-finals
The West Country outfit outmuscled their Scottish opponents at Hive Stadium on Saturday to book the first spot in the final
Scores from Sam Underhill, Tom Dunn (2), Alfie Barbeary, Niall Annett and Guy Pepper as well as nine points from the boot of Finn Russell saw Bath to an away win
Mosese Tuipulotu and Ali Price would cross for Edinburgh in a disappointing effort from the United Rugby Championship outfit after recent solid outings in that league
Bath were worthy winners of the fixture and are enjoying a wonderful season to date
having already won the Premiership Rugby Cup and sit atop the Premiership table
Edinburgh v Bath: Five takeaways as Finn Russell ‘rubber-stamps’ his Lions selection while Bomb Squad does its job
Therefore they are on track for a possible treble trophy haul in 2024/25 under Johann van Graan but there are still a few obstacles to bypass for Bath’s head of rugby
their opponents in the May 23 final in Cardiff will be Lyon after they overcame Racing 92 29-15 in the second semi which took place in Lyon on Sunday
Tries from Vincent Rattez and Beka Saginadze were added to by 19 points off the tee from Leo Berdeu
who kicked two conversions and five penalties in the victory
The Challenge Cup final will kick off at 20:00 BST on that Friday with the match officials to be confirmed by European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) at a later date
The Sharks won last year’s Challenge Cup after beating Gloucester 36-22 in the final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium so there will be fresh hands on the trophy in 2025
