There are existing political parties and several new ones in the making
What the Nation is witnessing for now is the vibrancy of the main contending Parties
The National People’s Party (NPP) is a Presidential Party
It is currently standing on strong political footing
the Party will be formidable in the 2026 elections
observers have talked about the skirmishes within the NPP camp which could lead to tribal conflict in its ranks unless the leadership holds firm the spirit of the coalition that brought the Party into power
As the Wollof proverb says ‘DINA LERR’. On the other hand
the United Democratic Party (UDP) which has been considered the majority opposition party
is seemingly showing signs of crack and a possible crash which could lead to its disintegration if political sophistication is not injected to fix its political fragility
the UDP leader is yet to be publicly categoric whether he will contest in the 2026 elections as the Party’s flag bearer
The other remaining contenders of significance in Gambian politics are the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) and the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS)
The GDC is still on evaluation of the political terrain and will hopefully come out with its plan of action sooner than later
the Party is endowed with the most powerful political orator in the country
GDC could be a stumbling block to the chances of political victory for other Parties in the 2026 elections
The PDOIS is also seemingly showing signs of disunity within its ranks
This might hinder the Party’s chances of making a headway in the 2026 elections
It is a Party that is endowed with intellectualism but politically displaced with ordinary Gambians
They don’t seem to speak the language of the people
This is to say what the people can understand and what the people want in their livelihoods
The Party’s state of preparedness for the 2026 elections is under the radar of the public
It is not clear yet who will be the next Party leader even though the current leadership talks about a ‘strategic political framework in the making.’ Hope it enhances the image of the Party and make it survive in the battle for the State House in 2026
There are rumours of new political parties in the making
It will add to the battle for political survival in the coming year
History has shown that most of the mushroom political parties are not ready for the political battleground but do seek for alliances that will give them positions in government
the political battleground ground for the 2026 elections is in the likelihood of winning Parties NPP
it will be the most contested elections in the history of the country
If men are unable to critically perceive the themes of their lives
they will be carried along in the wake of change
There has been public outcry already about the fairness and transparency of the 2026 elections and as well the appointment of Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission
it is in the supreme interest of the Nation that these concerns are addressed
It will add to the consolidation of democracy and good governance
the winner of the political battle ground will depend on the electorates
will most likely capture the most votes in the 2026 elections
The conduct of peaceful elections gives credibility to both the government and the people
There will be no reasons for hatred and bitterness once the electoral process is conducted in a free and transparent manner and the will of the people safeguarded
These Battle Ground Tigers know a thing or two about a comeback
Battle Ground dropped to last place in the 4A Greater St
Helens League baseball standings after losing two of three against Camas and dropping its series opener to Skyview
three losses and a tough hill to climb in an uber-competitive league
The Tigers put their heads down and went back to work
for sure,” Battle Ground junior James Gill III said
“We’re not going to let one thing knock us down.”
Battle Ground rallied to take the next two games in last week’s series against Skyview
with Thursday’s 5-1 win against Union in each team’s 4A GSHL finale
the Tigers clinched a series win and the league’s No
2 seed heading into next week’s 4A bi-district playoffs
“They’ve showed a lot of resilience,” Battle Ground coach Seth Johnson
After splitting the first two games of the series, Union entered Thursday knowing a win would guarantee at least a share of the 4A GSHL title, pending the outcome of Camas and Skyview’s game, which the Papermakers later won 8-1 to wrap up the title
Battle Ground seized control fast and didn’t let go
Cooper McGowan and Collin McGowan led off the top of the first inning with back-to-back base hits
Jacob Long added an RBI single to give the Tigers a commanding 3-0 lead through one-half inning
“Against a really good arm too (Union starting pitcher Jacob Chandler)
we competed well against him (and) kind of just got things going from the very beginning,” said Cooper McGowan
“I just kind of set things up for the power of the order — James
Jake and Jayden (Sivits) — just kind of let them do their thing.”
held solid with an error-free game to support Gill
who struck out five with two walks and four hits in a complete-game showing
holding Union scoreless until Drew Hertenstein’s bases-loaded RBI single in the seventh
Gill and the Tigers got a jolt in the third inning when the left-handed pitcher was able to knock down a comebacker with his glove and throw to first base for an out
Johnson barely made it out of the dugout to check on his ace pitcher before Gill flashed a thumbs up sign indicating he was good to go
“I didn’t even mean to … I wish I caught it
The Tigers closed the inning with a double play
including a tag at the plate by catcher Collin McGowan to keep Union off the board
Cooper McGowan went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Tigers
scoring again after Union was called for a balk in the fifth
before adding a two-out RBI base hit in the sixth
“I feel really good,” Cooper McGowan said
“We’re really starting to play all together the last two series
I think we’re in a really good spot.”
Battle Ground is in a familiar situation with the league’s No
like last year when the Tigers advanced to the 4A state tournament for the first time since 2017
The Tigers are eager to compete in those playoff atmospheres
“We’re playing our best baseball right now,” Johnson said
“and that’s all you can ask for.”

(KATU) — A suspect in a harrowing animal cruelty case in southwest Washington has been apprehended
thanks to the swift action of local authorities and the power of social media
the Battle Ground Police Department turned to social media to locate a man accused of abandoning nine dogs
identified as 35-year-old Andre Terwiliger
The department's post was shared by more than 1,500 people
leading to tips that guided the Clark County Sheriff's Department to Terwiliger
The investigation began last November when police responded to a call at a residence on Southwest 5th Street
officers detected a strong odor emanating from the garage
where they discovered nine dogs—five deceased and four suffering from starvation and dehydration
The surviving dogs were taken to a veterinarian and are expected to recover
who was supposed to be caring for the dogs
was initially untraceable after a warrant was issued for his arrest
The public's assistance proved crucial in locating him
so I find out most stuff through the news and social media
I only have Instagram so that’s where I find out most things if I don’t catch the news." She added that her daughter informed her about the case
Terwiliger faces seven counts of first-degree animal cruelty related to the deceased dogs and two counts of second-degree animal cruelty for failing to provide care
Police noted that Terwiliger was a former tenant of the residence but did not disclose when he moved out or where he was found
He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday
The Battle Ground Police Department expressed gratitude to the public and the Clark County Sheriff's deputies for their rapid response
"The department is truly humbled by the overwhelming support they received on this heartbreaking case."

BATTLE GROUND — With just nine games over three series to decide a 4A Greater St
Camas’ 10-9 win over Battle Ground in each team’s 4A GSHL opener on Monday certainly had that feel
“It’s really important to get the first (one),” Camas head coach Stephen Short said
The Papermakers had contributions throughout their lineup at the plate and a solid six-inning performance on the mound from starter Sawyer Clifton to build a six-run lead through six innings
But the Tigers didn’t go away in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases and rattled off five runs
highlighted by RBI hits from Cooper McGowan
But Camas freshman reliever Lincoln Fogle stood tall under pressure
striking out Battle Ground’s final two batters and delivering the Papermakers their first win toward defending their 4A GSHL title
“I think we have a lot of confidence in this team
we have a lot of confidence in each other and we trust each other,” Camas senior Matthew Manjooran said
“We’ve been in tough situations like that before
so we kind of knew we were going to come out with the ‘W.'”
At the San Diego Lions Baseball Tournament two weeks ago
Camas was on the other side of the comeback
scoring seven runs in the seventh to down Rancho Buena Vista 9-8
The result served as a reminder that a game is never out of reach
It also speaks to the Papermakers’ growing confidence at the plate
They put constant pressure on the Tigers’ defense Monday by amassing 12 hits
including one RBI double apiece from Manjooran
including a base hit during a four-run sixth inning that gave Camas a 10-4 lead
So where does the Papermakers’ confidence come from
“We’re a really tight-knit team,” Lukens said
“You can hang out with anyone on the team and have a great time
so I feel like it’s just the trust we have in one another and the confidence we have in the guy next to you.”
That team-wide trust served Camas well through multiple challenges
starting catcher Hayden Ollmann appeared to roll his ankle while running out a ground ball and was replaced by Stevens
Clifton gutted through six innings on the mound with a large blister on his toe
All of which led to a grind-it-out seventh inning for the Papermakers
forget about the bad and get ready to go play tomorrow,” Short said
While the three-game series shifts to Camas on Tuesday before returning to Battle Ground on Thursday
the Papermakers’ close win Monday may well foreshadow another tightly-contested league title race much like last year
which came down to the ninth and final game
the reigning 4A GSHL and All-Region player of the year who will start later in the series
Union and Skyview have plenty of talent up and down their rosters as well
The key for Camas is sticking to its tried-and-true formula
“I’d say just putting on early pressure offensively
limiting walks and really just making plays when we need to,” Lukens said

the transition between an outgoing senior class and a new group would be seamless
Skyview boys basketball coach Matt Gruhler knows that isn’t always the case
After finishing sixth at last year’s Class 4A state tournament with an impactful senior class led by Demaree Collins
the Storm have understandably gone through some growing pains this season
But while trying to build toward the best version of themselves
a 58-52 win over Battle Ground on Wednesday
required the Storm to claw back from a 10-point deficit in the first half
tighten up their defense and find some rhythm on offense
After outscoring Battle Ground 22-10 in the third quarter
Skyview held on for its third 4A Greater St
“Winning on the road is a tough thing to do in this league
and we haven’t really answered the call well the last few road games,” Gruhler said
this is a good learning lesson for a fairly inexperienced team
but a lot of guys (are) still trying to figure out how we best play together
We’re getting closer each game.”
0-4) did most of its damage in the paint led by the likes of Boston Walker (14 points) and James Gill (13 points)
The Tigers grabbed their biggest lead of 10 points after Brayden Andrews hit a 3-pointer in the closing minutes of the second quarter
3-1) closed on a 6-0 run to get within 27-23 at halftime
The takeaway from Skyview’s conversation in the locker room was simple
we weren’t playing Skyview basketball,” he said
“We didn’t look like ourselves at all
if you look at our last three league games
that didn’t look like us at all.”
the Storm gained momentum midway through the third quarter when Malakai Weimer scored eight straight points
Hanson followed by converting a three-point play and scoring on a layup with one minute left
giving the Storm a 45-37 lead entering the fourth
Weimer (17 points) and Hanson (14 points) combined to score 18 of Skyview’s 22 points in the quarter
“I think that was the key to the third quarter.”
Skyview has learned many of its strengths are different than last year
One example Gruhler points to is the team’s scoring balance
which has expanded this season after graduating Collins
the program’s all-time leading scorer
Weimer and Hanson are averaging 18 and 15 points this season
“That’s been a positive for us,” Gruhler said
“But then it also means that guys could hide (before) when they had a bad game because somebody was going to carry them
There’s nowhere to hide anymore.”
But the Storm have fully embraced the behind-the-scenes work
starting with their summer league slate and carrying over to the winter season
“I feel like this is the hardest-working group we’ve had in Skyview history
and finding our identity all the way from summer league to fall league,” Hanson said
all the way from one to 13 just buying in every single day at practice
coming into these games and winning them (are) crucial.”

In the final game of the 2024 Hoopfest, Marshall County and Battle Ground Academy from Franklin, Tenn. took the floor. The game was a good one to close out the annual event and the first early season test for the Marshals that they passed with flying colors, beating the Wildcats 71-58 to sweep their Hoopfest games and improve to 3-0.
Matthew Langhi led four Marshals in double figures with 19 points along with eight rebounds to earn the Game MVP selection. Kyzer Phillips had 16 points and eight rebounds. Alex Staples and Tommy Robertson each finished the night with 12 points.
A 3-pointer from Phillips, who led the Marshals with eight first quarter points, put them in front of Battle Ground 7-6. The Wildcats took a 10-7 lead on a basket by Greyson Williams who went on to scored 32 points in the game.
Two straight baskets by Staples put the Marshals back on top 11-10, a lead they would not relinquish but had to battle to maintain. The first quarter scoring for the Marshals was closed out on threes from Phillips and Langhi to take a 19-14 lead.
Staples put the Marshals up 21-14 to start the second only to be answered with a three from Williams who scored all 10 of the Wildcats points in the quarter. A technical foul called on Battle Ground’s Landen Moore sent Carson Lovett to the free throw line. Lovett hit one of the two shots that fueled a Marshall County 10-2 run that stretched the lead out to 31-19.
Phillips put a punctuation mark on his impressive first half play, scoring the final four points to give the Marshals a 38-24 halftime lead.
The Wildcats outscored the Marshals 17-13 in the third quarter, getting three more players in the scoring column not named Williams, to trim the lead to 10 at 51-41. Langhi led the Marshals with four, the start of a 12-point half for the sophomore.
Langhi battled his way to the goal for the first two buckets of the fourth quarter and dropped in a free throw to maintain the 10-point lead. The combined scoring of Langhi, Ryan Stokes, Staples, Phillips and Robertson in the closing minutes sealed the 71-58 win.
The Marshals will head to Carlisle County for their next game on Tuesday, then play at McCracken County on Thursday in a double header with the Lady Marshals.
