Champagne and state-bred Sleepy Hollow He entered Saturday’s test from a close third in his seasonal debut in the local one-mile state-bred Gander on March 8 who exited post 4-of-5 carrying a field-high 123 pounds – five pounds more than each of his rivals “Any time that you get a horse who looks very precocious as a 2-year-old and goes on and wins his first three races obviously he's going to be running against tougher competition,” Englehart said His last race was his first race off a layoff going a flat mile You want them to back up what you think of them and I'm glad to get another ‘W,’ and kind of re-affirm what we have thought all along about him." who entered a perfect 2-for-2 at Laurel Park made the lead from post 3 under Arnaldo Bocachica but it was Mo Plex who pressured from the outside and put a head in front through an opening quarter-mile in 23.09 seconds over the fast main track Pascaline attempted an inside move approaching the turn with Share the Ludt and McKellen trying wide bids as Faster Gator battled back to gain a half-length advantage after a half-mile in 45.55 Mo Plex put his head back in front at the stretch call but a stubborn Faster Gator continued to find more as the field straightened away would not be denied the narrow win in a final time of 1:21.96 Pascaline completed the trifecta with Share the Ludt and the Hall of Famer Javier Castellano-piloted McKellen rounding out the order of finish “You’ve got to give credit to the horse from Anthony – he was tough to go by The three horse [Faster Gator] broke on top I let him take it and just sit right next to him and put the pressure so he wanted to get close to me and I let my horse go a little bit I had a lot of horse under me the whole way,” Franco continued but now it seems like he’s straightening out a lot better this year.” Bocachica said Faster Gator performed admirably in his first start outside of Laurel Park “He was really game and he never gave up – the other horse just was better today,” Bocachica said he just couldn’t beat the other horse.” confirmed they would consider a potential start in the seven-furlong Grade 1 $500,000 Woody Stephens on June 7 the fourth quarter during the Suffolk High School boys lacrosse game between Bay Shore and Longwood on Tuesday April 8 2025 at Bay Shore High School Credit: Bob Sorensen Teams are usually happy when they gain possession in lacrosse But when you’re facing the Longwood boys team all that means is long-stick midfielder Brady Rattmer is about to step onto the field The senior excels at turning smiles upside down And after he forced three turnovers and disrupted most attacks that came his way the only team left grinning at Bay Shore High School was Longwood as the Lions roared to a 10-4 win over the Marauders Tuesday afternoon in Suffolk League I Sophomore Collin Kelly and seniors Darrell Smith and Conor Marr played equally sound defense with Rattmer in front of them as Longwood forced four shot-clock violations Bay Shore struggled to challenge freshman goalie Alex Herrera (five saves) “We focused on communicating and helping each other out when we’re down,” Rattmer said make sure we didn’t give up any cheap ones,” Longwood coach Bryce Krawec said That focus proved fruitful with Longwood leading 4-2 in the third quarter Rattmer helped force a turnover that led Smith to scoop the ground ball and hit Rattmer in stride across the middle of the field The long-stick midfielder galloped all the way into the offensive zone before dishing a pass to senior James Gritz The performance comes at the right time for Longwood which allowed 32 goals across its last two games — losses to Mount Sinai and Ward Melville with both Rattmer and senior attackman Justin Silon noting how last year’s 15-6 loss to Bay Shore stuck with the team “I thought about it all the time,” Silon said Silon matched the team’s strong defensive effort with an electric second-half performance He scored three goals and assisted another for a game-high four points “I thought to myself and reflected on how me as a player could help the team,” Silon said Senior goalie Devin Dubendorf made nine saves for Bay Shore (3-2 including several early in the game that kept the Marauders floating it will be the first of many for the Lions “This was definitely a big game,” Krawec said “We saw the Newsday article The renovated building is more energy efficient but retains its mid-century charm the century-old Bay Shore Neighborhood Library in Belmont Shore reopened Saturday to much cheer from residents and public officials Is this exciting!” said Councilmember Kristina Duggan to rousing applause from attendees at the grand reopening.  The standing-room-only event took place Saturday, Jan. 11, with about 200 book lovers and library patrons of every age pouring into the library’s community room. They munched pastries and sipped beverages provided by Friends of the Long Beach Public Library while they listened to speakers who came to share in the celebration That says a lot about the transformational power that libraries have had in this particular community,” said Mayor Rex Richardson The Bay Shore library had been closed for about a year and a half while the building underwent renovations that included painting inside and outside insulating windows with double panes and raising their height to allow for possible future sea level rise; installing automatic doors and a new ADA-compliant ramp to provide accessibility for wheelchairs strollers and wagons; constructing a sheltered space outside the community room for relaxing and reading with the family or solo; putting in LED lighting for reduced energy usage; and adding temperature control “How many places have a library where you can sit and enjoy looking out on the water?” Duggan asked.  “[The renovations are] going to help the building last longer and help us to be more environmentally conscious,” Richardson said During the renovation’s long planning process city officials and bureau heads took the community’s wishes into consideration while still preserving the mid-century modern look of the library we wanted to preserve the original charm,” said Marilyn Surakus the Project Management Bureau manager in the Public Works Department “That was really a priority based on the feedback we got from the community and we worked diligently to preserve the library’s history and its functionality.” She said that the building’s closure didn’t stop services for children library officials scheduled 120 story times in city parks “Our wonderful children’s librarians took their show on the road,” she said some of whom had never been to a library before The Long Beach Watchdog is owned by journalists local reporting like the story you just read is important to you The firing of two executives late last year led to a staff vote of no confidence in CEO Blair Kent More than 100 people gathered Downtown on May 1 urging city officials to adopt a rent stabilization policy increase investment in legal aid for immigrants and tenants and create a livable wage “We all make mistakes," owner Jill Pharis said “It's time to address the issue." currently serves as the vice president of community relations for Northwell Health previously volunteered for eight years as the chamber board’s director His term as president runs for three years Periconi has also retired as the executive director of the Bay Shore Business Improvement District’s management association The Town of Islip appointed him as deputy commissioner (the taxing district position’s new title) on March 11 Greater Bay Shore caught up with Fraser this month to talk about the future for Bay Shore Q: What did you most admire about Donna’s leadership with the chamber?  Donna’s favorite line was “the finest people live in Bay Shore.” Q: Were there any immediate changes that you made either to how and when meetings are conducted A: There are no meeting changes for this year, but we are updating, organizing and upgrading our existing website social media channels and email platforms for consistent messaging facing the downtown area in particular?   A: I see tremendous opportunity for growth in our downtown but we also face key challenges that require strategic solutions One of the biggest hurdles is infrastructure — aging sidewalks parking accessibility and streetscape improvements are critical to enhancing the experience for both residents and visitors supporting our small businesses remains a priority We need to balance development with maintaining the unique charm that makes our downtown special ensuring that new investments complement our existing businesses Through collaboration with local government business owners and community stakeholders we can address these challenges and continue building a thriving downtown that serves as the heart of Bay Shore’s economic and social life what are you tackling or addressing first?  A: My top priorities for year one are cleanliness A thriving downtown starts with a welcoming environment so ensuring our streets are clean and safe is essential We’re actively working with local officials and stakeholders to enhance security measures improve walkability and maintain the charm that makes Bay Shore such a great destination I’m also focused on bringing more commerce to Union Boulevard and beyond As the Greater Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce it’s important that we support all businesses throughout our community That’s why I’ve been meeting with business owners across Bay Shore every day inviting them to join the chamber and ensuring they have a voice in our collective success Q: With all the development and business activity that’s happened in Bay Shore since you’ve been involved in the chamber or something the chamber wants to keep an eye on?  A: Bay Shore has experienced remarkable growth in recent years and much of it has been positive for our community attracting more visitors and creating a vibrant This development has strengthened our local economy and reinforced Bay Shore’s reputation as a thriving hub for commerce and community life we must be proactive in addressing these concerns I recently asked our government partners to assist with a new walkability study to ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with expansion Safety remains my number one priority on Main Street — ensuring well-lit streets pedestrian-friendly crossings and a welcoming environment for all The chamber is committed to working closely with local officials and residents to strike the right balance — embracing growth while maintaining the charm and security that make Bay Shore such a special place can you tell us about any new events or plans for 2025 that you’re especially excited about?  A: We have our Arts Festival by the Bay on June 8 from 11a.m. to 6 p.m., and our Bounty by the Bay Farmers Market is back starting in June at a new location on Union Boulevard to accommodate my initial remark of bringing more commerce to Union Top: A 2019 downtown street festival in Bay Shore 2025 at 9:41 am ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}The parade hits the Shore It brewed up joy for the Greater Bay Shore community — in the form of free coffee and playful pups In a partnership with Canine Companions Kismet played host to a heartwarming event that was met with an outpouring of support from residents — with families friends and coffee lovers gathering to enjoy a complimentary cup while meeting the incredible service dogs from Canine Companions The sight of children laughing and engaging with the well-trained canines brought smiles to everyone’s faces “Kismet Coffee has always been about community,” said Eddie Fraser, incoming president of the Greater Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce “Teaming up with Canine Companions was the perfect way to give back not only by offering free coffee but by supporting an amazing organization that changes lives through their service dogs.” Canine Companions, a national nonprofit with a volunteer chapter here on Long Island, provides highly trained service dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities —empowering them with greater independence and companionship. Representatives from the organization were on-site to educate the public about their mission and the impact of service dogs on people’s lives. Local leaders and community members alike praised the initiative. “This event showcases the generosity and community spirit of Bay Shore,” Fraser said. “It’s inspiring to see businesses come together with nonprofits to make a real difference.” As the sun set on a day filled with kindness, connection and caffeine, Bay Shore residents left with warm hearts and full cups, looking forward to more events that bring the community together. The suit had been brought by an individual who said he was abused as a third-grade student in Bernagozzi's class at Gardiner Manor Elementary School in 1990-91 said Saturday that he would appeal the decision and that his client wanted to continue the case “It’s been a long haul and he’s determined to pursue his rights,” Herman said who taught third grade at two Bay Shore elementary schools from 1970 to 2000 has denied claims that he sexually abused anyone He has been charged with criminal sex act with a child under 13 years of age course sexual conduct with a child under the age of 11 and possession of child pornography Those charges are pending in Suffolk County Court Prosecutors have called Bernagozzi a “serial sexual abuser” who targeted boys between the ages of 4 and 12 over his 30-year career in the Bay Shore school district Newsday previously reported that at least 45 sexual abuse claims involving Bernagozzi have been filed against the district under the Child Victims Act A Suffolk County civil court jury last year found the Bay Shore school district liable for negligence in supervision and acting with reckless disregard for not heeding warnings about alleged prior sexual abuse and employing Bernagozzi as a teacher at Gardiner Manor Elementary in the early 1990s determined that the plaintiff should receive $7 million for future pain and suffering and $18 million for damages from the time of the alleged abuse to the present day That number was $4 million more than the plaintiff sought The Bay Shore district’s annual budget for 2024-25 is $197 million The district’s lawyers asked the judge to set aside the verdict on both liability and damages and order a retrial in the case Of the cases brought against the district involving Bernagozzi 17 have settled for a total of $55 million — about $3 million each Three additional cases have been resolved through insurance the jury’s verdict of $25,000,000 is grossly disproportionate to the reasonable value of the allegations within this case and to that of the seventeen (17) other CVA cases previously filed against the district and already settled,” Silverman said in his brief seeking a retrial Modelewski on Thursday rejected Bay Shore’s request for a new trial on liability but said that he would have a new jury hear the case for damages unless both sides could agree on a reduced payment Modelewski said that the district’s brief had persuaded him and expressed irritation at the briefs filed by Herman comparing the plaintiff's filings to the "open disobedience of court orders by the current president," according to the transcript of the proceedings The judge said he had asked both sides for "additional information on the settlement of similar matters under the Child Victims Act," the transcript said “The defendant Bay Shore School District complied with the Court's direction," he said "The plaintiff did not; instead resorting to a letter-writing campaign that smacks of obfuscation and the submission of verdicts and settlements in far-flung jurisdictions Herman on Saturday defended his court submissions “I think we did what we felt we needed to do,” he said “We respect the court and we provided what we thought were the appropriate documentation to support our arguments.”  The Dark Horse Tavern team has saddled up and is galloping into Suffolk County The goal is to open in March at the former American Standard location in Bay Shore But the real dream would be to open by the March 8 Bay Shore Brightwaters St. Patricks’ Day Parade, the Dark Horse ownership team told Greater Long Island co-owner Christopher Daro says Dark Horse will be open soon enough — dishing freshly prepared food from the kitchen pouring craft beers and shaking up premium cocktails This will be the company’s fourth Dark Horse location and the first in Suffolk even the High Horse catering space in Farmingdale That’s what drew the team — which includes Joseph Mantovani all restaurant industry veterans — to the heart of Bay Shore after a Babylon deal fell through in 2024 “We like the Main Street aspect of [downtown Bay Shore],” said Daro “And how the town gets together for events We also love how it’s located near the ferries to Fire Island.” “Suffolk County is the next frontier for us,” he continued and I think Bay Shore is one of the leading towns out here He said he’s also heard the restaurant community and the customers who frequent the downtown “are great.” Related: Winter Long Island Restaurant Week is now in full swing!
