EMAIL: CANARSIEC@AOL.COM By Loretta Chin A talented group of wood carvers have been meeting and creating beautiful works of art at the United Methodist Church of Sheepshead Bay at 3087 Ocean Avenue since February and shared some of their latest creations with the Canarsie Courier on Saturday “Brooklyn Wood Carvers is the first club in Brooklyn,” main organizer of the group and longtime area resident Donald Quigley said Quigley starts new members off with a simple project He draws a flower on a small block of wood and instructs members on how to use the wood carving tools properly to make a relief carving which is the process of cutting into the design so that it appears to protrude from the wood but Quigley mainly uses wood from the linden tree called basswood which he purchases from a wholesaler in the Bronx “We have different people doing different things for the group,” Quigley said relief carvers and anybody who is working with wood in any way.” Many of the members were part of senior-focused community groups in Downtown Brooklyn who wanted to join the wood carving group Newcomers are helped by Quigley and their fellow wood carvers creating a sense of camaraderie and community “Wood carving activates the brain cells and makes you think,” he said of just one of the many benefits of wood carving  He noticed how people who came in with tension were more relaxed over time “We teach each other,” Gregory Anderson said He felt that wood carving was a dying art in the United States compared to Europe and what they were doing was keeping the art of wood carving alive He would like to see people recognize it more as a fine art Others spoke about the therapeutic aspects and satisfaction they get from wood carving In addition to the thought process and concentration needed to work on the various pieces that helps keep the mind sharp other benefits of wood carving were strengthening of fine motor skills the emotional and spiritual satisfaction of creating something personal for themselves or for others “It’s not cookie cutter and people are allowed to have personal expression,” Laurella Sapp said “Even though the common material is the wood that they are working with that gets transformed into the manifestation of each person’s personality and that’s what you see.” The group has been steadily growing since it started about three months ago and currently has 17 members who meet on the first third and fifth Saturdays of the month; they pay $20 dues for four months to cover costs of tools Quigley says that some will sell or show their work but most will keep them as a labor of love for themselves or as gifts which is Sheepshead Bay’s oldest standing church It was built in the mid-to late 19th century with two tall church steeples and impressive Victorian Gothic architectural design Korean Methodist and Russian Orthodox congregations also share the space and website in this browser for the next time I comment Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" Click Here Now 1142 East 92nd Street, Brooklyn, New York 11236 (718) 257-0600 canarsiec@aol.com social Designed by Speakly Media NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero's Top 5 potential first round picks in 2025 NFL Draft Back-to-back NFC North crowns have the Detroit Lions feeling rather bellicose With the 2025 NFL Draft set to kick off this week from Green Bay Lions team president Rod Wood took a jab at the division rival on Monday when discussing his desire to bring the draft back to Detroit one day "Trying to get the NFL to consider bringing it back (to Detroit) because I don't think they'll ever top it," Wood said, via Marlowe Alter of the Detroit Free Press They'll finish second or as I said to (reporter) Brad (Galli) they'll finish third like they did last year." best Lions coverage all year long at freep.com/sports/lions Isaac Wynter Weins never met his grandfather Raymond Kuffel was drafted in the NFL in 1944 is going to be a part of the NFL draft in Green Bay April 24-26 as an artist who brought the league's 32 team logos to life through reclaimed wood These works made by Weins — known to his massive social media following as Ike Wynter — will line the Player Walkway the path each player who's at the draft will take before hearing their name called on stage "It's just the biggest opportunity ever of my life," Weins told the Journal Sentinel "I don't really know how else we top this or what we do next." It took Weins more than 600 hours and over 50 pieces of furniture — some given to him by fellow Wisconsinites some found on the side of the road — to create all of the 3-foot-by-3-foot wooden mosaics in his Butler studio how he got to team up with the NFL and where you can see in-person a couple of the team logos he made: Before Weins became a full-time artist, he was in the hardcore metal band Narrow Hearts, then started a junk removal business with his older brother It was during that time that Weins found art as a way to not let the discarded wood the business collected go to waste Wynter moved to Minneapolis in pursuit of his artistic passions Soon after, he'd split his time between his own dream and helping make the dreams of others come true, working as a tour manager for the Los Angeles-based Dream Machine Foundation Weins moved back to the Milwaukee area and took his art full-time He cuts pieces of wood to fit together like a puzzle His muses: Nostalgia and mental health awareness The piece that helped launch Weins' social media career a couple years back was one he made for former boxing champ Mike Tyson He's also the artist behind that giant wooden Crayola crayon box that circulated on social media last summer Weins has been in the national spotlight before, being featured by "NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt," the "Today" show and "Pattrn" on The Weather Channel Weins said the NFL contacted him after coming across his work online "I really didn't think it was real," he said the league had a massive project for him: A special art installation for the draft featuring the league's 32 team logos — a visual representation of the event's theme "The fact that (the NFL) chose a Wisconsin artist and a local artist to do a project of this significance is very humbling," Weins said After visiting NFL headquarters in New York City he spent weeks collecting discarded furniture — nearly all entertainment centers and dressers — to use as the wood for the project the NFL translated each team's colorful logo into wooden interpretations Weins knew he'd have to complete at least one every two days to finish in time Weins printed out a template for each piece which helped him when it came to sketching and cutting The cuts and angles had to be true to the logos Weins had several logos in the works at a time like the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals But, the most detailed logos took over 30 hours each: The Jacksonville Jaguars with all of its spots the Cleveland Browns helmet with its lines and outlines and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with all of its complexity saved the best for last: The Green Bay Packers "G." It was made out of two entertainment centers When Weins wrapped up the project in under 40 days he laid all 32 pieces out on his studio floor While he basked in the moment and was proud he also felt sadness — not yet ready for the project he so passionately threw himself into to be over Weins will be delivering the dozens of wooden mosaics to Green Bay ahead of the draft and will be there throughout the event the art installation will be a visual and symbolic welcome to the league's newest stars "This is the biggest moment for those players for their lives," Weins said "To be a part of the final walk when players get drafted is like it's the biggest honor from the biggest sports agency in the world." Weins doesn't expect that the public will be able to view the logos in-person they'll be visible during the draft broadcast Weins looked at the draft project as a way to honor his grandpa's life through what he's doing with his own "It was the only thing in my life so far that brought me this close to feeling this close to him," Weins said "I feel very connected to him and honored." After attending Messmer High School, Kuffel was a football and basketball star at Marquette University who'd go on to be inducted into the Marquette 'M Club' Hall of Fame he was part of the 1943 Notre Dame national championship football team While he was chosen by the Chicago Cardinals in the 20th round of the 1944 NFL draft he played three seasons — 1947 through 1949 — in the All-America Football Conference for several teams he caught 22 passes for 402 yards and three touchdowns Kuffel had a longtime dental practice in Butler — the Waukesha County village where Weins also has his studio — until his death in 1974 Around 15 pieces of Weins' works will be a part of Gallery Night MKE Friday at the Iron Horse Hotel With so much of his life and career being digital Weins said he values getting to connect with his followers in-person rather than through a screen "It's not something I get to do often within my art so I'm excited for it to have it be a physical In addition to a number of his viral works Weins will be showing some hobby pieces he's never posted about before Two of the draft logos will also be on display at Friday's event Weins' art — besides the draft logos — will be viewable at the hotel through April Edible Monterey Bay 2025 – Life is about to become a literal three-ring circus for Carmel Valley chef Tim Wood In addition to running his award-winning restaurant Woody’s at the Airport and the two-year-old Woody’s at Del Mesa he’s taking over the café at the Carmel Valley Athletic Club starting at the end of this month “I looked at it and it felt right,” says Wood who’s been a CVAC member for about three years “When there’s a need and we think it makes sense and can be sustainable currently recharging his batteries in London with his wife phoned EMB this afternoon from across the pond to explain that he plans to start small with the new operation—which will be open to non-members as well as members Wood’s CVAC kitchen will serve an indoor dining space an outdoor terrace overlooking the tennis courts and offer poolside service Catering for tournaments and other special events is also in the cards healthy foods will dominate the menu at the café which will open about 10:30am and go through lunch and happy hour burgers and margaritas will be on the opening menu you need to find a routine and then listen to what people have to say about the food,” says Wood who’s also hoping that proximity to the workout room will help motivate him to exercise more fresh evening menus a couple of times a week including Taco Tuesdays and some kind of Hump Day menu to give people a reason to take a break from cooking and go out midweek Plans call for the café to be open Thursday to Tuesday and closed Wednesdays but Wood expects to increase to seven days a week once he can staff up the airport snack bar and Woody’s at Del Mesa Wood says he currently employs about 70 “kooky characters” and rotates them around the venues so they are ready to step in where needed Soon he’ll be looking for more folks to join the team.    our mission is to celebrate the local food culture of Santa Cruz and we believe everyone has a right to healthful We think knowing where our food comes from is powerful website and newsletters inspire readers to get to know and support our local growers Digital EditionText Edition our mission is to celebrate the local food cultures of Santa Cruz and that everyone has a right to healthful We think knowing where our food comes from is a powerful thing website and events will inspire readers to get to know and support our local growers EMB is one of 80+ magazines in the award-winning and beloved Edible Communities family We hope you enjoy all that we have to offer Milwaukee wood artist Ike Wynter has created a replica of the Stanley Cup, been featured on NBC's “Today” show and has one of his pieces hanging in the New York Stock Exchange but what he has come up with for the NFL draft is a cut above “It’s for sure the coolest art opportunity and project I’ve ever done,” said Wynter, who rescues discarded furniture and wood from curbsides, alleys and dumpsters and turns it into the kind of art that has made him a social media star It was a tall order, even for a guy whose oversized box of Crayola crayons went viral in 2024, racking up millions of views on TikTok and Instagram Never one to say no when an opportunity presents itself the self-taught Wynter ran with the NFL idea in his studio in Butler designing and rounding up the salvaged furniture (more than 50 pieces in all) Thirty-seven days and more than 500 hours later The logos will be hung in the Player Walkway each prospect travels before hearing his name called onstage at the draft. While in-person visitors to the free event won’t have access to the art installation viewers who watch it live on TV are certain to see it “I’ve done some pretty notable pieces of art for some cool organizations and people but doing all 32 pieces for a collection for this historic moment for these players walking through the tunnel ...,” Wynter said but also the platform that they’re going to live on and that they’ll be part of these players’ history moving forward nothing I have ever done has ever compared to the notoriety or the scale of what this is.” Wynter never adds paint or stain to the reclaimed wood he uses instead relying on the textures and tones already there He earmarked some pieces of furniture for parts of specific logos A man on Facebook offered up a vanity that had been a gift to his grandmother in 1934 as part of a furniture set When Wynter removed the mirror from the vanity frame to discard it he discovered a beautiful weathered wood sunburst behind it “Right when I saw it I knew exactly which piece it was going to so it ended up being the sunburst rays on the Miami Dolphins piece,” he said He had originally planned to tackle the logos by the eight NFL divisions, but he quickly learned that wasn’t going to be feasible. He could cut the New England Patriots Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons logos out of the same piece of off-white plywood from the back of an entertainment center to get the most use from it but each would have to wait to be completed until he could find the other colors for them interesting process that I didn’t know that’s how it was going to go because creating that process really brought this project to life in the best way.” More: Here are the 68 Wisconsin vendors you'll find at a special edition of Saturday Farmers Market during the NFL draft More: From cheese curds and Spotted Cow to Old-Fashioneds and butter burgers, a cheat sheet of famous Wisconsin foods for Green Bay visitors He’s accustomed to spending dozens or even hundreds of hours on some of his pieces but the nature of the NFL project meant being able to spend only a day or two on each He sustained the pace by listening to music as he worked — Sheryl Crow “Probably 20% of this NFL project was consumed by Gracie Abrams,” he said because I grew up in the heavy metal music scene so right after I’ll play a Sabrina Carpenter song I throw on a heavy metal song most people wouldn’t dare to listen to.” The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars proved to be two of the most challenging mosaics and rest assured there’s a little extra love in that logo “I will say the Packers ‘G’ is the last thing I cut for this project,” he said The white wood on the ‘G’ was the last piece I got to punch in after 500 hours.” The Buffalo Bills logo was also particularly meaningful for him Having the opportunity to tie his legacy into the project was an honor “I was more emotional on that piece than anything else so it’s the closest I’ve ever felt to him,” he said Wynter will be in Green Bay for all three days of the draft He’s already texted a few people whose old furniture was used in the project to tell them to keep an eye out on TV for their entertainment center in this logo or that Initial plans call for them to go back to NFL headquarters when the draft ends Wynter is humbled to have his work be part of an event that means so much to his home state There’s something special about football fans and sports culture in Wisconsin "Built by Community," so too is the art he made for it — furniture and family heirlooms gathered from people in the community and elevated to the national spotlight 'We’re interested in your work,' I think no matter what industry you’re in Kendra Meinert is an entertainment and feature writer at the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Northern California a vintage Fageol bus that operated in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1926 to 1949 was recently acquired from the Museum of Bus Transportation in Hershey This historic vehicle’s return marks a homecoming as it rejoins the Bay Area community where it once served local routes Museum President Lorne Thompson expressed gratitude for the support that enabled the acquisition highlighting the bus’s historical connection to the region “I am so overwhelmed by the generosity of our museum members who helped finance this addition to our fleet and we are excited to share its legacy,” Thompson said #216 was part of a final order for the Pacific Electric Railway After its brief time with the Pacific Electric Railway in Los Angeles #216 was leased in 1926 to the Peninsular Railway to replace trolley service affected by street improvements Painted in dark red with gold-leaf lettering the bus later changed hands multiple times before ending its Bay Area service in 1949 #216 received a six-cylinder Hercules JXB engine preserving its historic character while enhancing its operability The bus remained a community fixture in Palo Alto and participated in events like the Redwood City Parades and the 1992 Bus Bash in San Jose Demeter eventually donated the bus to the Museum of Bus Transportation where it became a highlight until its transfer to the Pacific Bus Museum in Fremont in September 2024 it is part of a collection of over 20 buses in Fremont where all the vehicles are running and driving working models Museum Vice President and Head Archivist Tom Shafer is looking forward to the bus’s future public appearances “We anticipate it will feature in parades and our movie work,” Shafer said Former PBM President Ron Medaglia shared his enthusiasm about the bus’s return “I’m happy to have it in our collection and back in the Bay Area,” Medaglia said the vintage Fageol bus is generating considerable interest among volunteers and members is in remarkable shape for being 100 years old The engine starts right up and sounds great It’s simply an amazing time capsule,” said PBM volunteer Tom Baker He added that the vehicle’s arrival drew a crowd “Bus fans were excitedly gathered around the first time we started #216 up and drove it around the yard,” Baker said Bus enthusiasts couldn’t be happier about the museum’s acquisition A hundred years old and still as sturdy as when first built The preservation of #216 has resonated with those who value historical artifacts and the stories they carry “Thank you to an organization that wants to keep our industry history alive and not looking to make money off the historical donations of others!” said Mark Szyperski “I appreciate your dedication to our industry.” says he’s counting the days until #216 is featured in a public event displaying this rare piece of transportation history “Now I want to see that and ride it in person on a future visit,” Nachor said “And if it can be showcased somewhere like in San Francisco during Heritage Weekend Thompson believes the bus will bring the past alive long into the future “This bus is part of a legacy that spans generations,” he said “We’re proud to give people an opportunity to experience that legacy firsthand and to share the stories of those who traveled these roads before us.” For more information about this bus, visit the Pacific Bus Museum [ DIRK SHADD | Times ]In Tampa, where the city is advocating for 30,000 trees planted by 2030 large trees now sit chopped up on the side of the road And it could be months before the city takes them away Mayor Jane Castor said Wednesday that the city’s prioritizing clearing out household wreckage from hurricanes Helene and Milton “I think everyone would agree you’d rather see the limbs out on your yard than to see all of your possession out there in the front of your homes,” Castor said Castor said the “vast majority” of wood from collected trees will be recycled Most of the wood will be chipped at a debris management site which are holding areas for wreckage from storms “We may see a bit of dust in this area as well just to set the tone” said Larry Washington while speaking at a debris management site at 7215 S the assistant county administrator for the public works department said downed trees and vegetation will be ground and used beneficially for composting or decorative mulch the wood chips can be used for landfill cover landfills are covered each day by soil to improve health and safety at the sites vegetative debris will chipped and sent to permitted landfills Petersburg said the quickest way to get vegetative debris collected is to place it in a city trash bin Material brought to brush sites is typically used to make mulch or as soil builder Officials are reminding residents to keep storm debris loose and separated by type vegetative material should be away from household appliances Local governments have been placed on a time crunch. The Federal Emergency Management Agency approved reimbursing all of the debris collection in Florida’s affected areas for a 90-day window. Collecting debris within that period will save local and state dollars and governments are looking to take advantage Hillsborough County said the 90-day clock began on Monday “We feel that we will be able to do it in 90 days maybe a little bit longer for some of the vegetation,” Castor said “But we will definitely get the household up Local governments across Tampa Bay are collecting debris daily For the most up-to-date information on debris cleanup Here are a few resources from some of Tampa Bay’s largest governments Hillsborough County has a webpage that provides cleanup resources, including debris drop-off sites and access to the county’s “storm debris collection lookup tool.” The tool provides a look at debris collection scheduling The city of Tampa’s website includes where to drop off debris, should you choose to. (WFTS) — Walking inside Cathy Rick-Joule's Baywood Shore's house save for some fans and a few appliances here and there The walls are cut from the bottom to about five feet up but my neighborhood and this beautiful community of Dunedin," she said What used to be inside their home now sits outside on the curb This is the same for every house in her neighborhood "To see the refrigerators and double stack washer dryers and very heavy furniture all it looked like someone picked the house up and shook it and everything was was in a different place from where it started," she recalled What makes this even harder is the fact that the whole neighborhood just went through the same thing a little more than a year ago we had about 18 inches of water in the house," she said repairing the house from Hurricane to Idalia last August everything completed in May and to now be going through this again with this beautiful community is just absolutely heartbreaking." Rick-Joule's found her reasons to smile in a few places who has opened her home to them during repairs so they were able just to walk around and sort out their house or the things that we put up high were floating But that's nothing compared to everybody else and made us feel so comfortable and so welcome and right at home and they're wonderful people on top of it all and have become incredible friends," Rick-Joule added Rick-Joule is also thankful for what the city of Dunedin has done for their community but they really seem to be just doing everything they can and really just talking directly to us as individual The City of Dunedin has opened Highlander Pool's showers up to the public They provided the Baywoood Shores neighborhood with Red Cross recovery buckets both Cathy and Kathy say city leadership has reached out to them there was a lot of conversation on the front end The first thing that happened is Sue Burness Communications Director with the City of Dunedin "The next thing was that we got a call yesterday from the Senior Administrative Assistant Lindsey Brush and she gave me all sorts of information about what was available to our neighborhood specifically what's available just in the City of Dunedin." This working relationship between the neighborhood and the city has been a year in the making it was uncovered that there's 11 major valves that feed this neighborhood either the water going out or the water going in," she said "There was all these valves that the intent was that when the water comes the valves would shut and keep the tide from coming in The neighbors sounded the alarm on the problem getting the ball moving towards repairs in November the flooding from Helene came straight from water coming over the seawall The damage to the neighborhood shows just how severe that storm surge was It's a sight Kathy Till reached out to ABC Action News about and they don't realize how how flooded we were getting all the time," she said and I feel like that's part of where the system failed" Henry Betsey Jr. is facing charges for marrying three Florida women in three different counties at the same time. pellet burners and woodburners and how to choose a burner that meets emission standards new fires have been manufactured to meet the new Government air quality standards Older fires contribute to the air quality problem because they are less efficient and have higher pollutant emissions The Regional Council rules state that non-compliant fires are or will be prohibited from use Replacing your open fire or older model wood burner gives you cleaner winter air and a healthier home inside and out. We can help you and provide advice and funding for plenty of efficient heating options, including heatpumps, gas fires, pellet burners and wood burners. More information is available at genless.govt.nz The following burner emission limits apply within the Napier and Hastings Airsheds: 1.0 g/kg for all freestanding fires and insert burners without a wetback 1.5 g/kg for insert burners with a wetback * Woodburner emission limit of 1.5g/kg applies to all properties less than 2ha regardless of whether property is within or beyond an Airshed This limit is specified in the Resource Management (National Environmental Standards Relating to Certain Air Pollutants and Other Toxics) Regulations 2004.Approved burners are required to have a thermal efficiency of 65% or greater as described in AS/NZS4013:1999 An airshed is a legally designated air quality management area regional councils and unitary authorities have identified areas to be managed as airsheds for the purposes of the national environmental standards for air quality The majority of our airsheds may have levels of pollutants that exceed the national environmental standards for air quality Some airsheds are also identified based on factors such as You can use the map below to check whether your property falls in to the airshed and what it means regarding replacing a non-compliant fire if you live in the blue or red zones Choosing dry firewood that burns well keeps your home warmer and our air cleaner it burns with less heat and produces lots of smoke polluting the air and costing you more money Burning damp wood means the fire is mostly used boiling the moisture out of the wood You are actually using up more wood for fuel to get the fire hot enough Smoky fires also pollute the air creating a health risk and some helpful videos showing how to choose and set a fire that produces very little air pollution inside and outside your home and is efficient to run seasoned fire wood from a reputable supplier but you will use less of it to get more warmth into your home Dry seasoned firewood will have been correctly dried over a two years minimum period of management This careful management achieves a very dry wood that burns with a lot of heat Go outside and check your chimney – you will see smoke when it’s first lit but once the fire is well underway and hot Don’t damp the fire down when you go to bed as this increases the smoke as the fire smoulders Modern compliant units won’t allow this anyway It may be free but has hidden costs because burning releases harmful chemicals which will damage your burner and harm your health Burning plastics particularly releases harmful chemicals Have your wood burner and flue professionally checked and serviced each year before the winter begins dry wood supply lasts longer as it will burn hot and you will use less of it Correctly dry wood has almost no bark on it and sounds hollow when knocked together go for denser hardwoods for a longer burn and use softwoods for kindling Collect wood 6-12 months before intended use Select wood which is already partially dry that’s sound with no rot or excessive bark Split larger logs to assist drying and burning Stack fuel loosely in a dry place and cover the top and two sides so air can pass freely through the pile Use fuel in order - the oldest and driest first Always SAY NO to offers of treated or painted wood Perfect firewood has a moisture content of below 20 percent wood in your firebox puts its energy into drying It also creates lots of smoke and a sticky creosote layer inside your flue Research has found if you do it right by following steps Cut wood to a length that fits easily into your woodburner or fireplace – the firewood in the research was at most 60cm long Split the wood at least once – wood dries along the grain up to 15 times faster than across the grain store drying firewood in a ventilated shed; only put it in the sun if it’s not going to rain or another solid surface dries significantly faster than wood on bare or vegetation-covered ground Stack wood so there’s space for air to flow between the pieces Only cover the top of an outdoor stack when it’s drying Test wood with a top cover took half as long to dry in a sunny Allow sun and air to reach the sides of the woodpile to help dry the wood Cover in autumn or newly dry firewood will soak up moisture again it’s too late to season green wood due to humidity and moisture levels; even in a dry shed it’s unlikely to get below 30 percent moisture content Te often think about it.  “Where are you from?” or “What kind of restaurant is it?” automatically expecting an answer that likely refers to a city there are currently a lot of new and intriguing things happening at a place called Salt Wood Kitchen & Oysterette in the dunes of Marina on the grounds of The Sanctuary Beach Resort Note the special event seafood boils that may soon go public; the bespoke s’mores program; “BONDfires” with seasonal cocktails and chocolate fondue; and the twice-weekly whole hog roasts.  But the most interesting plot at work is more abstract and overarching than those special items.  Salt Wood has long flirted with fabulousness.  It lit up a wood-fired program starring the live oak logs artfully stacked by the entrance and the live grill at the heart of the restaurant.  It presented special dinners and engineered live-fired seafood before it got trendy.  It built out a dining room-bar area that’s as open and arty as any in the area But something hasn’t quite clicked long term The location it occupies presents part of the challenge Isolated on its own little sand-surrounded island the spot doesn’t get spontaneous foot traffic A drive from Carmel or Pacific Grove takes 20 minutes or more Wind can wreak havoc on outdoor activities.   after a media invite to try brunch last month—and to meet new chef Rodriguez (yes one name flex)—I observe real reason for hope.  beyond a space that remains aesthetically sleek.  • Fun foods. Rodriguez and company know how to play contemporary hits with clever zing House specialties like a “BLT” with two over easy eggs and green goddess dressing is both messy and fun including with truffle butter and fried sunchoke or harissa butter and lime yogurt The Llano Seco suckling pig roasts might be the SW’s most festive thing flanked by seasonal sides including jalapeño mac and cheese • A focus on fuego. Salt Wood’s DNA has long centered around the giant Santa Maria-style grill at the bar Chef Rodriguez is committed to reestablishing the “Live Fire Kitchen”—with viewer-seducing grilled steaks and smoked chicken along the way.  • Abiding ambition. This team isn’t sitting complacent Rodriguez presents a potent addition there He spent extended time in Michelin kitchens from New York to San Francisco before working with friend and colleague Jonny Black at Sierra Mar and is eager to have the reins “This project is going to take a lot of time and patience…but it’s finally my opportunity to take higher standard cuisine and put it in a beach setting and see what we can do,” says Rodriguez.   • Key personnel. Danny Reyes is a level-two sommelier who has worked at heavy hitters like Aubergine and Monterey Plaza Hotel’s Coastal Kitchen for two decades To have him helping manage the floor and serve tables provides the connective professionalism that great spots depend on.  • Dynamic drinks. The strong cocktail roster traces a local map with entries like the Memory Garden with Kettle One Chambord black raspberry liqueur and lemon the Monarch Sanctuary with Nolet’s gin lemon juice and charcoal—the latter giving it the shade of midnight—is the most interesting on the eye • That aspiration for more place. The highlights of our meal included a fresh salmon poke smoky charred beet and farmers market escarole salad and hefty local rockfish tacos (a Rodriguez recommendation) That reflects the #1 thing that stood out: the effort at finding from re-emphasizing the grill to the workshopped drinks to the spirited roasts and boils It may be marketing—and I was there on a planned media visit—but fortunately the overall experience proves promising Bartender Ryan Wayhouse describes a collaborative creative process around the new drinks that elevates their character in multiple dimensions the historical effect of Steinbeck,” he says “We’re trying to keep things as local as possible.” Some final thoughts belong to Rodriguez.  On his favorite type of firewood: “I love using live oak That’s what I worked with at [San Francisco spot] Lazy Bear and I like to work with what I know One of the reasons to use it is that it burns so hot which helps mostly with our large format steaks The live oak also has a beautiful effect on the duck On what makes Salt Wood a great place for him: “I was really confident in the space and locale and the opportunity to build on coastal cuisine and a seafood-dominant menu There was so much I could work with—the wood fire the [Japanese] takujo konro grill for oysters—while slowly and very thoughtfully putting together strategic touches that will ultimately create a unique dining experience: With oysters off the Binchotan and trout over live oak you get a total contrast of flavors.” On his approach to food: “For me it’s so many different components: being resourceful being true to simple craft of procedures and being consistent with that Ultimately it will showcase itself in the food Salt Wood finally has the presence of a chef and in this area we don’t have chefs who are there every single day working with the team More at saltwoodkitchenandoysterette.com.  Reach him by way of @MontereyMCA on Instagram or Harbor Bay Ventures is proposing the building on the site of the Bier Stube a longtime Ohio State watering hole at 1479 N "Our plan is to build Columbus’ first mass-timber building," said Dan Whalen vice president of design and development for Harbor Bay This would be Harbor Bay's second large, wood-framed structure. Two years ago, the company opened INTRO in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood, made of two timber-framed buildings, nine and 11 stories high. Harbor Bay bills INTRO as the nation's largest timber-framed building "Mass timber" has been used in constructing European high-rises since the mid-1990s and is slowly becoming more common in the U.S which involves laminating soft wood into large panels and beams is considered more environmentally friendly than traditional steel-and-concrete construction "Using wood as a structural or finishing material not only offers aesthetic beauty thermal comfort and energy efficiency," says Harbor Bay Harbor Bay's plans were approved Wednesday by the University Area Commission after the company agreed to make changes to the plan including reducing the height from 15 stories Harbor Bay is partnering on the project with Marker a Philadelphia-based student housing company Harbor Bay's proposal is the latest for the Bier Stube site. Early last year, Buckeye Real Estate proposed a six-story apartment building on the site would occupy the southwest corner of North High Street and West 9th Avenue intersection the 14-0 Express convenience store and Yau's Chinese Bistro would be removed to make way for the apartments Harbor Bay's plan calls for a first-floor "podium" level of traditional steel and concrete topped by 12 floors built of wood ranging from studios to four-bedroom units Harbor Bay estimates that 90% of tenants would be students five townhomes would open onto West 9th Avenue including a hot tub in the shape of a Block O would sit in the middle of the U on the first floor roof A fitness center and lounge would open onto the deck the University Area Commission granted a variance that allows no parking in the building instead of the 276 spaces current zoning code requires Harbor Bay's proposal notes that residents would have access to a surface parking lot on West 9th Avenue and a parking garage on East 9th Avenue The apartment building would be by far the tallest of a string of new student housing developed along High Street and Lane Avenue. Harbor Bay notes in its proposal that the building would be significantly shorter than the 26-story OSU Wexner Medical Center's new building Under the city's current zoning code, Harbor Bay's plan requires variances to raise the height and reduce parking. The project would have required few or no variances under the city's proposed zoning code which would eliminate parking requirements and allow buildings up to 12 stories on the site or 16 stories if the building includes affordable housing Harbor Bay says the site already includes affordable housing because it includes a string of affordable housing rentals along West 9th Avenue that Harbor Bay partly owns While the building was approved in a divided vote by the the University Area Commission some commissioners remain concerned about the plan "To include no parking is just totally irresponsible," said Seth Golding zoning chairman of the University Area Commission this is twice as high as anything we've approved." Golding said some commissioners felt their hands were tied a bit because Harbor Bay said it would leave alone the old affordable housing apartments that it owns on West 9th Avenue if the proposal was approved University Area Commissioner Michael Kehlmeier said he is also concerned about the project "The building will be much taller than any other building in the area," he said "I worry about the number of student housing units developers are building in the district," Kehlmeier said I also worry that there is no parking at all in the building." Kehlmeier also expressed concern that the building has no low-income housing Harbor Bay spokesman Steve Willobee said the company hopes to begin construction on the building this fall Willobee said Harbor Bay officials have been meeting with Columbus Building & Zoning officials on plans for the building "We're operating under current building codes but as with any building method that hasn’t been used before there’s familiarity that needs to be established and questions that need to be addressed," he said
