BAYVILLE — Wound kits designed to help staff treat patients before first responders arrive on the scene have been distributed throughout one Ocean County school district
About 40 cosmetic-bag-sized wound kits containing life-saving supplies such as tourniquets, gauze, chest seals (special bandages designed for deep wounds like stab or gunshot wounds), and a blanket can be found in the common areas in the Central Regional schools in Bayville
She wanted these kits in light of the school shootings that have happened across the U.S
It’s been her mission to make her schools safer and to give staffers the ability to intervene in a situation
She’s especially grateful to the “Make Our Schools Safe” Foundation
which is a non-profit started by Lori Alhadeff
who was 14 years old when she died in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland
The foundation donated $10,000 to the Central Regional School District to get the wound kits program started
The wound kits are not necessarily meant for a tragedy
There are many situations where the bleeding needs to be stopped
we have 40 (wound kits) deployed in the district
What we’re trying to do is raise a little bit more money to get them out into all of our classrooms,” she said
The kits are currently found in common areas and hallways throughout Central Regional’s middle and high schools
CarneyRay-Yoder wants them available in each and every classroom so every teacher has access to them
150 staffers have been trained on the kits
“We have about 450 staff members district-wide
My goal is to hopefully have all of them trained by the middle of next year
and I’m still trying to raise about $38,000 in order to provide every single classroom and every single area in my building with one of those kits,” she added
While having a school nurse on staff is very important
CarneyRay-Yoder believes if every staff member is trained on these wound kits
then not every situation will require a nurse
Staffers are trained on how to use tourniquets
and how to close up a wound with the seals provided in the kits to stop the bleeding before getting the patient to a proper medical facility
CarneyRay-Yoder is accepting monetary donations to get more wound kits. She is a big believer in not only being prepared for emergencies
she recalled an incident where one of her students was injured in her classroom
CarneyRay-Yoder said she didn’t have the proper materials to help the student
“But I don’t want to put people in that situation as a leader
“I really want to make sure that our students and our staff have the materials they need in order to be safe
and hopefully we never have to use them,” CarneyRay-Yoder said
She said it’s important that everyone in her school district is prepared for emergencies
they have not had to use any of the available wound kits

Jake Finamore is leading an effort to preserve the Clarkson Estate in Bayville
a 15-year-old sophomore at Locust Valley High School
remembers when his dad would drive him to Lattingtown to view the reflecting pool of a mansion that once stood there
During trips to the Meudon estate, he became interested in learning about the world around him as it existed a century ago — a period when gilded mansions populated sprawling grounds
“He brought me there and I was just telling him
‘I really want to know what this looked like back then,'” Finamore recalled in an interview
The teenager dove into an online wormhole and uncovered tidbits of Bayville’s history
He found a still-living piece not far from where he lives: the Clarkson Estate
“is the only one of its size that is still standing,” said Finamore
who has pushed village officials to preserve the property that has fallen into disrepair
“It’s one of the last surviving pieces of history in our area,” Finamore said
was built in the early 1900s by Peter Rouss
purchased the property that once stretched 73 acres
the director of the Bayville Historical Museum
Clarkson sold the estate for $250,000 in 1958
and it later became Oyster Bay Hospital in 1961
It was said to be the only hospital reachable by yacht
The hospital closed in 1969 and the home was converted into The Renaissance
a rest and recovery center for wealthy people struggling with alcohol addiction
the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County had opened a facility at the mansion
Bayville Mayor Steve Minicozzi acknowledged the nonprofit is interested in selling the property
though there is no formal plan under review
Officials from the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County did not respond to requests for comment
very bad condition,” Minicozzi said of the state of the home
adding it would cost $10 million to conduct repairs
“It doesn’t seem to make sense for them to put that kind of money into the building.”
Minicozzi said the property is zoned for 1-acre residential use and any new developer would have to subdivide the property to build multiple homes there
Rapelje said the property lacks federal and state landmark protections that could prevent future development there
“It’s the last of the big mansions that are in town,” Rapelje said
The mansion at the 60-acre Oak Point, where financier Harrison Williams lived
Finamore has pressed the preservation issue at village board meetings
He made a post about it on the Facebook group Mansions of the Gilded Age that generated nearly 300 likes and supportive comments
“I do think that there are routes for this home to be saved,” Finamore said
a developer could request half-acre zoning to build more homes on the site
a developer could decide to preserve the mansion and build on the acres around it
director of preservation at Preservation Long Island
said the number of large estates and mansions has been dwindling for decades
"If you go back to the 1920s and look at all of the estates that were there and compare it to even 30 years later
She said the Clarkson Estate is a last vestige of that era
Preservation Long Island sent a letter to Bayville's mayor indicating the group is prepared to support any efforts to save the property
The exterior of the mansion — adorned with four towering pillars and a grand staircase — are among the only original features
one of the only ways for us to move forward as a community and as a society is by remembering and memorializing our past,” Finamore said

2025 at 2:24 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}The neighbors had feuded for years prior to the shooting
NJ — The recent shooting in the Berkeley Shores neighborhood stemmed from a history of disputes between neighbors
Both authorities and other neighbors said that John Adamo
and the neighbors - not identified by officials
but have been identified by friends as Tom and Jill Kwatkoski - had been feuding for years
A "no trespassing" sign in the Kwatkoski's yard directly addressed Adamo, a neighbor told CBS New York
I don't know what brought it to that point
They have the cameras aimed at each other's houses
but in my book they were all nice," neighbor Joe Spicciatie told CBS
Other neighbors told PIX11 News that they weren't sure of the details of the dispute
A mutual friend told the news station that it had something to do with loud music
There was "always friction" between the neighbors, another neighbor told the New York Post
Monday when Adamo fired a shot at his male neighbor outside of his home
triggering a two-and-a-half hour standoff with the Ocean County SWAT Team that ended with police discovering Adamo dead in his upstairs bedroom
dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head
Both victims were airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center
where they were in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday morning
Tom and Jill Kwatkoski are both in stable condition after they were shot by John Adamo earlier this week
"While the physical wounds will eventually heal
the emotional and financial toll on their family is significant
and their journey toward recovery is just beginning," friend Jill Stuart wrote in the GoFundMe
which has reached just over $13,000 as of Thursday with a $40,000 goal
The Kwatkoski family has four sons, the youngest of which received community support a decade ago when he was fighting childhood cancer
all while they continue to care for their four sons," Stuart said
All of the money raised by the GoFundMe will go towards the Kwatkoski family's medical bills
daily expenses and ensuring their sons are taken care of during this time
It will also help with any other unforeseen costs

NJ — A New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) officer from Bayville is accused of stealing state-owned ammo and selling it for hundreds of thousands of dollars of profit
was a NJDOC lieutenant and also served as its Range Master
He has been suspended from this role pending the investigation and has been charged with official misconduct
theft and structuring financial transactions
These charges stem from an investigation by the Office of Public Integrity & Accountability (OPIA)
New Jersey State Police and NJDOC's Special Investigations Division
Morris was in charge of managing the agency's firing ranges for its officers
including ordering ammunition and maintaining inventory of it
Morris was responsible for ordering and maintaining ammo at the four NJDOC gun ranges: Annandale in Hunterdon County (Northern Region)
Maurice River in Cumberland County (Southern Region)
and the Corrections Staff Training Academy in Sea Girt
as well as the ammunition at Special Operations Group Headquarters in Trenton
Morris has been ordering extra ammo and selling it on the secondary market for cash and check payments made directly to himself from a gun supply store
Authorities allege that Morris has made more than $475,000 in this years-long scheme
authorities say Morris structured his payments and transactions he entered into at banks through sales of taxpayer-funded ammunition in order to avoid bank reporting requirements
which otherwise may have flagged the deposits
Morris cashed multiple checks at banks in a series of transactions designed to evade the $10,000 bank reporting requirement and other suspicious activity reporting requirements
corruption is an expensive drain on public resources and victimizes taxpayers
My office refuses to accept that as business as usual,” said Platkin
“The defendant allegedly abused his law enforcement position to steal from the public
and he tried to conceal it with financial transactions designed to fly under the radar.”

Mcinaw (Ocean County Corrections website)TOMS RIVER
NJ — The Seaside Park woman who is charged with hitting and killing fishing icon and Bayville restaurant owner Bob Popovics has been released from jail to await trial
Genell A. Mcinaw, 50, was ordered released Wednesday by Ocean County Superior Court Judge Wendel E
Mcinaw has been charged with vehicular homicide
and knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death
23 when he was hit as he crossed The Boulevard in a crosswalk near Klee's Bar and Grill
Mcinaw was released with the condition that does not drive a vehicle and does not drink to excess
Mcinaw initially was arrested early on Sept
24 on a charge of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury
after investigators tracked her to her home in the hours after the crash
She was released under New Jersey bail reform rules
attorney Terrance Turnbach argued for Mcinaw's pretrial release
saying she had complied with the conditions after her initial arrest and that it had been Mcinaw and her attorney who had notified the prosecutor's office that Popovics had died
Seaside Heights police found Popovics seriously injured and unconscious on the Boulevard in front of Klee's Bar and Grill about 9:30 p.m
He was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune and remained there until his death
Authorities determined Mcinaw had hit him after reviewing video surveillance from Klee's and Hooks Bar and Grill
where she had been drinking alcohol right before the crash
Evidence showed she had ordered four drinks in a 36-minute span at Hooks; Mcinaw later told authorities she had been drinking at two other restaurants earlier in the day, according to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case
Mcinaw's blood was drawn under a court-authorized warrant at 12:45 a.m
and the results of the lab testing showed her blood alcohol concentration was .187
the prosecutor's office said the police officer who found Popovics in the street recognized him and knew his wife needed to be contacted immediately
who he knew worked for Popovics at Shady Rest
When Mcinaw asked why the officer wanted Popovics' wife's number
Mcinaw never indicated to the officer that she might have hit Popovics and never forwarded his wife's number

Restaurateur Leonard Gross plans to open a new waterfront restaurant in Bayville in the place of the former Steve's Pier One
A waterfront property in Bayville that once held the iconic Steve’s Pier One seafood restaurant is set to start a new chapter as a seasonal eatery and event space
ending a yearslong effort to develop the site
said The Beach Barn — a restaurant and clam bar — could open as early as the middle of this year after years of failed proposals and setbacks
who has owned the site for nearly 15 years
and that’s what we want to bring back,” Gross said
“I think it’s going to be a phenomenal thing for Bayville.”
Steve's Pier One was a beachside draw for decades that brought people to the quiet North Shore village
situated far from the Long Island Expressway and the foot traffic of busier parts of Nassau County
After the restaurant closed in 2006 and was knocked down years later
numerous proposals by Gross for the empty waterfront lot fell short of getting off the ground
The village approved a spa that stalled after foundation was poured; the village board reversed course in 2018 and shot down a pitch for a 23-room seaside inn; and plans for a three-story event center never materialized
they were overdevelopment,” said Bayville Mayor Steve Minicozzi
who said he met with Gross in his first week of being voted into office in 2022 to discuss the new project
Mike Carrozza — owner of Bayville Wines & Liquors
which is located across the street from the site — said he’s watched the plot sit unused for years since he took over the business in 2006
There were “a bunch of starts and stops,” he said
Putting in the foundation at the site for the new venue “gives them some credibility,” said Carrozza
who is also the vice president of the village's Chamber of Commerce
While the new restaurant will take away his shop's view of the water
Carrozza said he'd "rather have some commerce here in town" to help the surrounding businesses in the isolated village
The new venue is about half the size of the former Steve’s Pier One and is not expected to trigger parking problems since Gross owns a lot across the street
Gross is in the process of building three waterfront homes on an adjacent lot that he said will serve as a buffer to the restaurant
it “kind of dragged the whole strip down with it
With a new restaurant serving as an anchor to draw visitors
he thinks the new project will be a boon for Bayville
“Besides the fact of not having to look at an empty lot anymore
there’s going to be a beautiful seaside restaurant that’ll bring people,” Minicozzi said
whose family also runs Teddy’s Bully Bar in Oyster Bay and The Clubhouse in Bellmore
said he remembers going to Steve’s Pier One with his family and seeing sunset views
He aims for the new restaurant to use that view — incorporating large window panels that can open the entire back of the restaurant to the water — as he tries to help resurrect an area that for years has remained undeveloped
The open concept and large outdoor patio will make visitors feel closer to Long Island Sound
“Lenny was looking for a true waterfront restaurant,” Cherveny said
The restaurant will have the appearance of a barn and have exposed wood beams
He said a Connecticut company is fabricating the framing of the 6,000-square-foot structure
which will then be transported over to Long Island and assembled on the foundation
which could affect the timing of its opening
“It’s been long enough — I can wait another season.”

Robert "Bob" Popovics was a staple of the Jersey Shore community
the longtime Seaside Park resident owned and operated Shady Rest in Bayville for years
as well as being well-renowned in the fishing community
After his tragic death this past November
local officials have created ways to honor him
Berkeley officials recently declared that June 1 would be named Robert "Bob" Popovics Day in town
The date was chosen because that's when the roses are in bloom at Shady Rest
And a proposed bill from the 9th Legislative District aims to expand it so that day is celebrated statewide
"Bob has made numerous contributions to his community
Bob proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War," Sen
having taken over the establishment from his parents
Bob and his wife operated the Shady Rest restaurant in Bayville
"Bob was also well-renowned in the fishing community for being an avid fly fisherman
and the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pop Fleyes
a custom fly tying and educational company
His fly designs have been considered groundbreaking and his community meetings led to the creation of the Atlantic Saltwater Flyrodders."
The delegation has introduced bills in the State Senate and Assembly to name June 1 in honor of Popovics
"To recognize Bob's numerous contributions to the New Jersey community in which he lived
it is altogether fitting and proper to designate June 1 of each year as 'Robert 'Bob' Popovics Day' in New Jersey," the delegation said
