I spent a lot of time at Holland State Park
I would always jealously watch all the other kids jump off the pier and into the water
You would hear from classmates in school or see people online jumping off the pier as a sort of Michigan "rite of passage"
and you wanted to be able to say you jumped off the pier
My parents never let my siblings and me do it
What's so dangerous about jumping into the lake where we were just swimming along the beach
I understand what makes this activity not only dangerous but also illegal.
As fun and seemingly safe as pier-jumping at the beach is, for many, it ended up being the last thing they ever did. Lake Michigan was recently named the deadliest lake in America, and the reason why is directly attributed to the biggest danger that comes with pier-jumping
Rip currents can pull a swimmer under the water and lead to drowning. A 2021 story from the West Ottawan recounts a family in pain after their 5-year-old was pulled deep into Lake Michigan by these currents. Even the state of Michigan discourages pier jumping.
Bills have been introduced in the past to make pier jumping a federal offense that would result in a $500 fine
But that hasn't stopped cities from enacting and enforcing their own ordinances to deter jumpers
this is the only city that fines for jumping
Most places have safety measures in place to deter jumping
Whether there is a red-flag warning or not
currents can drag even the strongest swimmers under or further out into the Lake
Pier jumping might seem harmless, but deadly rip currents and underwater hazards make it one of the riskiest things you can do on Lake Michigan.\nRead More

The best view to watch a rocket launch from the Space Coast is along the beach
visibility will depend on weather conditions and people should make sure not to block traffic or rights of way on bridges and to follow posted rules at beaches
If you are viewing the launch along the Indian River in Titusville from Space View Park or Parrish Park
If you are farther south along the Indian River
Playalinda Beach or Canaveral National Seashore is the closest spot to view liftoff because it is almost parallel to Launch Pad 39A

VERO BEACH – One man was stabbed and another sustained a head injury in what police said was a "road rage" incident in the parking lot of a popular beach park
Both men were taken to hospitals following the altercation just after 6:30 p.m
Deputy Chief Matthew Monaco said a couple was on foot walking through the South Beach Park parking area and encountered a vehicle they believed was traveling too fast through the parking lot
After stating their concerns to the driver of the vehicle
a fight ensued between the driver and the man who was on foot
“(One man) was stabbed in the abdomen,” said police spokesperson Kelsea Callahan

The man who sustained a single stab wound was taken by ambulance to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce
while the man with a head injury was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital for evaluation of a possible concussion

The park formerly known as Cedar Beach Park has officially been renamed Lake City Beach Park—a change that reflects the community’s connection to the area and dedication to preserving public spaces.
This new name not only highlights the park’s proximity to Lake City but also serves as a tribute to the passionate efforts of local residents who worked tirelessly to ensure the preservation of this cherished slice of waterfront.
Lake City Beach Park is located at the street end at NE 130th Street
shoreline is accessible by foot or bike and is most easily reached by the Burke-Gilman Trail
This new name will replace the Cedar Beach Park name
as including Lake City in the name was important to community members who worked so hard to ensure this Dead End became a public beach.
The site had been a public small street-end beach property used by the community as a public park and an access point to Lake Washington since the early 1900’s
Neighboring community members rallied the City to help restore public access to this waterfront property
the City Council authorized the acquisition
The City initiated a condemnation process in 2016
Seattle Parks and Recreation finalized the purchase of this property in May 2019 and formally named it Lake City Beach Park after seeking public naming suggestions.
Whether you’re biking the Burke-Gilman Trail
or enjoying waterfront access with your family
this park provides a welcoming retreat for everyone.

This 1951 postcard shows the Euclid Beach Park arch from the waning years of the amusement park’s heyday
The arch is being relocated and preserved in a new public park adjacent to this location in Cleveland’s North Collinwood neighborhood (Cleveland Public Library)
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s Office of Capital Projects is ready to start work on relocating and rehabilitating a gateway arch from the historic Euclid Beach Park to its planned new home a few feet away
That home is a new greenspace in the 15900 block of Lake Shore Blvd
in Cleveland’s North Collinwood neighborhood
with trees and walkways and the landmark arch spanning the main walkway lined with benches
Detailed architectural plans for relocating the 104-year-old arch to a new Euclid Beach Arch Park were made public on Friday by the Mayor’s Office of Capital Projects and its project architect Bialosky Cleveland
as part of construction permit application
were submitted to the Building Department’s Web portal for review and approval
The arch spans East 159th Street which is the access road for several high-rise apartment complexes that were built on the site of the former amusement park that closed in 1969
several cars have struck the arch or the bollards intended to protect it from vehicle strikes
noted the work involves “Relocation of the existing Euclid Beach Arch
including the removal of the existing exterior stone finish
the addition of new sheathing and new concrete foundations
New exterior finishes and electrical power will be addressed in a future construction phase and submitted under separate cover.”
Cost for this phase of work is estimated at $200,000
with the entire project and new park projected to cost about $800,000
The project is being funded by a $54 million city bond issue for capital improvements to city parks
the arch will be illuminated from the ground and stand behind a flagpole plaza near Lake Shore Boulevard
Site plan for the Euclid Beach Arch Park in the 15900 block of Lake Shore Boulevard shows the new location for the historic arch as well as its current location spanning East 159th Street
The plans also show other proposed park features
proposed types of trees and hedges (Bialosky)
If the permit application is approved by the building department in a timely manner
it is possible that work might begin on removing the arch by this summer
City Planning Commission signed off on the project in December
City officials said during a presentation to the commission that the arch is being moved to improve the right of way of East 159th to accommodate deliveries by large trucks
And the arch cannot structurally survive being transported much farther than it will be
The 1.55-acre park land at 15891 Lake Shore is being donated by the McDonald’s Real Estate Co
The land held a McDonald’s fast food restaurant until it was demolished in 2015 by C&J Contractors of Cleveland
All structures including the restaurant’s foundations were removed and backfilled with clean fill
The restaurant’s utility connections were capped
most visible remnants of Euclid Beach Park
an amusement park incorporated in 1895 and leased to the Humphrey family which opened the park in 1901
City records indicate the current arch was constructed in 1921 to replace a smaller gateway arch that preceded it
the current arch was designed to resemble an “H” for the “Humphrey” family
the arch was significantly rebuilt with a “Perma-Stone” covering
“Perma-Stone” is a trademarked cementitious material made to resemble stone and produced in Columbus
the arch’s original incandescent bulbs were converted to neon
Each tower has a door on the rear or north side
and an internal ladder that allows access to the interior of the cross-piece
Walking under the gateway was a point of feverish excitement for kids hopping off the 1B streetcar from St
Clair Avenue and the 6C streetcar from Euclid Avenue
and later from Cleveland Transit System buses using the same route numbers
Such theme parks at the then-urban fringe kept transit lines in major cities busy on weekends
Looking north on East 159th Street from Lake Shore Boulevard in March 2024
Despite the addition of steel bollards in 2007
vehicle strikes have done significant damage to the Euclid Beach Park gateway arch (Andrew Baugnet)
Euclid Beach Park closed for the season on Sept
1969 and never reopened due to declining finances resulting from urban sprawl
worsening crime and the fact that the park didn’t charge a fee to enter it — only individual rides charged entrance fees
nearly all of the remnants of the park were demolished except for a lakeside fountain
only the arch was protected — it was declared a city landmark in 1973
assumed ownership and occupation of the property
of the Interior for the arch’s inclusion on the National Register for Historic Places had more ownership information
It noted “According to Cuyahoga County records
the high rise behind the arch is now owned by ‘AE Owner LLC’ as of 2018
AE Owner LLC does NOT claim ownership of the arch
and the City of Cleveland also denies ownership
citing previous evidence of private ownership and the fact that the road under the arch started as a private drive and was never officially sanctioned as a city street by ordinance.”
Two restoration efforts of the arch were undertaken
involved repainting and general maintenance
the arch’s letters were infilled where the neon light wiring used to be
There is no record that a paint analysis was conducted; the original paint colors dating to 1942 with the installation of the Perma-Stone have not been studied or determined
was performed at the arch after a vehicular impact at the east tower
The collision caused the tower to shift off its foundation by about 6 inches towards Lake Shore Boulevard
Another vehicle impact in 2020 resulted in the arch sustaining substantial damage

Pedestrians stroll the Great Highway in San Francisco on Nov. 15, 2024. Months after voters passed Proposition K to permanently close part of the Great Highway to vehicles, the city has made traffic improvements in the area to prepare for a new park. (Beth LaBerge/KQED)Months after San Franciscans voted to turn part of the Great Highway into oceanfront recreational space
Ocean Beach Park is on track to debut this spring
With the road permanently closed to vehicles
the city has already made traffic improvements meant to speed up alternate travel north and south from Lake Merced to Golden Gate Park and make the infrastructure around the Great Highway more pedestrian-friendly
according to Proposition K organizers and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department
“These improvements lay the groundwork for the transformation of the Great Highway into an oceanfront park
creating a new recreational space while keeping the area navigable for all,” a city spokesperson said in a statement
In November, San Francisco voters approved repurposing the Great Highway
a longtime commuter corridor for the city’s west side that became a beloved outdoor recreation space for the whole city during the COVID-19 pandemic when it was temporarily closed to vehicle traffic
rollerbladers and bicyclists to cruise along Ocean Beach
In preparation for opening the park that Proposition K supporters envision
city staff prioritized previously planned improvements to Sunset Boulevard — another key commuter road that spans the west side
the city made sure [those improvements] got done before Prop
“This is just a case of coordinating city actions well so that Sunset Boulevard was nice and smooth before folks needed to start using that for their north-south commute
The Department of Public Works has repaved 44 blocks of the road
and Muni’s 29–Sunset bus route will now stop after passing through intersections instead of before
alleviating a build-up of cars waiting to turn right off the road
will speed up north and south travel while having a minimal impact on those turning right onto Sunset
“It’s a north-south thoroughfare
if … you’re turning right onto Sunset Boulevard
so you can turn into the second lane if you needed to,” he told KQED
“I don’t think that that will create much of an issue for those folks because there’s not a significant amount of traffic turning onto Sunset Boulevard during those signals.”
and intersections’ drainage systems have been improved
The $7.5 million project was already part of the city’s budget for infrastructure improvements
The city is also putting traffic signals at key intersections in the Outer Sunset
Stop signs at 41st Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard have been replaced by a light
and another is set to go live at Sloat and Skyline boulevards on Wednesday
Caltrans installed a traffic signal at the intersection of the Great Highway and Skyline — which previously had no signal control — to improve traffic flow and safety
according to the city’s press release
“We are responding to these changes by taking action now
including installing new traffic signals to prepare the streets well ahead of the shift to a new park,” San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency streets director Viktoriya Wise said in a statement
“Our priority is to keep people moving safely and efficiently as these changes take effect
Lux said the next steps for Ocean Beach Park supporters is to get started on delivering a permanent park
“This is a bit of a cart and a horse challenge where people don’t fund things that aren’t created or that there’s no voter mandate for
so now that there is a voter mandate for Proposition K
there’s actually been a few sources of funding rolling in already,” he told KQED
The project has a $1 million park planning grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy
which was awarded to the Rec and Park Department
as well as a regional Metropolitan Transportation Commission award for more traffic updates
Private donors are also working with the city to install temporary art
Lux said he wasn’t able to provide a total budget estimate for the park renovations but that it would depend on the planning period
“The city is making the west side infrastructure ready for a park,” Lux said
and what’s to come is now the really fun part
which is transitioning this special part of our coast to a park space that San Franciscans can enjoy on a daily basis.”

KAILUA – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) will implement additional parking restrictions starting this Monday
in an effort to reduce the amount of congestion coming in and out of the Lanikai neighborhood during the ongoing construction of Phase 8 of the Kalapawai Roundabout project
The City’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will ban parking in the Kailua Beach Park parking lot makai of Kalapawai Store
This is the parking lot between Lihiwai Road and Kailua Road
currently used as the detour to leave Lanikai
expected to last the duration of Phase 8 construction
will reduce conflicts and congestion for vehicles leaving Lanikai
Digital and hard signage will be posted at the Lihiwai Road entrance to the parking lot
DPR reminds park visitors that parking is still available near the Canoe Hale and the boat ramp
DTS will ban parking on the makai-side unimproved shoulder of Kawailoa Road between Popoiʻa Road and ʻAlalā Road
fronting the Kailua Beach Park Canoe Hale parking lot
Parking will be restricted daily between 10 a.m
This will also reduce traffic conflicts for vehicles leaving Lanikai
Special duty police officers may be deployed as needed
“DTS will implement these additional parking restrictions with input from the Lanikai community and Councilmember Esther Kiaʻāina
“We are committed to implement refinements to our traffic plans to reduce congestion and delay
bringing relief to Lanikai residents and visitors
we ask visitors to consider other beaches on Oʻahu or take TheBus Route 671 from Kailua town.”
Visitors may consider other beaches along Oʻahu’s east shore or choose to ride TheBus Route 671 from Kailua Town for convenient alternative access to Lanikai
DTS will leave in place temporary “sawhorse” type signs on affected streets in Lanikai to warn drivers of the parking restrictions
Residents traversing through this area should allow for extra time to get through Kalapawai and expect congestion during construction times
Additional information on the project, construction schedules, detour patterns and remaining phases can be found here: https://www.kalapawaiproject.com/
This federally-funded project will include various improvements
including an upgraded roundabout with higher-quality materials
raised pedestrian crossings in the immediate vicinity of the roundabout
and new drainage infrastructure to address frequent storm water ponding
Drainage infrastructure will include permeable pavements

The bathrooms serving beachgoers at one of O‘ahu’s most popular and storied shoreline parks will experience significant restoration beginning in mid-April 2025
Complete roof reconstruction and bathroom repairs to the comfort station at Waimea Bay Beach Park are scheduled to start on Monday
This will require the closure of the entire bathroom facility throughout the extensive maintenance project
The restoration effort is expected to be completed
and the comfort station reopened to the public
The beach showers will also remain available
No public parking is expected to be impacted by the project
though an area adjacent to the comfort station will be used to stage equipment
Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) staff are coordinating with first responders
particularly Ocean Safety Department lifeguards
to relocate their equipment on-site and ensure there is no disruption to emergency services as a result of the project
A combination of contract and in-house maintenance to the bathroom building will begin with a complete roof reconstruction
including replacing the support beams and shingles
That work will be conducted by Moriyama Construction
We greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of kama‘āina and malihini (locals and tourists) who plan on visiting Waimea Beach during this facility improvement effort
