GRAND FORKS — With Epic Companies dealing with bankruptcy another company — Grand Forks-based Dakota Commercial — hopes to have the Beacon public plaza back on track by this fall “We’re working through the ownership group to find a solution for financing for getting the center area done,” Dakota Commercial President Kevin Ritterman said “There have just been a lot of things in the last year; we just keep knocking off (to-do items) every day.” The mixed-use Beacon development in downtown Grand Forks broke ground at the site of the former Townhouse Hotel in 2021 The original proposal had three buildings surrounding a public plaza that included a stage and an ice skating rink the plaza's stage structure has been completed and two of the buildings are finished and have tenants living in them and was likely going to be delayed given market conditions “A $100 million-plus-revenue-a-year company (is now) like nothing,” Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski said “Ritterman and (Community Contractors President Craig) Tweten are trying to right this thing The city has not given Epic funds to date because the company has never met the conditions of a $2.5 million deposit given that Epic is still going through bankruptcy proceedings changes to the agreements would have to be brought forth depending on future ownership and changes would be subject to City Council approval Epic still owns a number of other properties in Grand Forks Those properties are also now managed by other companies Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Pa.) says the Trump administration should drop nuclear negotiations with Iran and finish off the country's nuclear facilities with a military strike "Waste that s—t," the Pennsylvania Democrat told the Washington Free Beacon in an interview on Wednesday "You're never going to be able to negotiate with that kind of regime that has been destabilizing the region for decades already to strike and destroy Iran's nuclear facilities." Fetterman dismissed the foreign policy experts who warn that striking Iran would lead to the outbreak of a regional war all of these so-called experts were all wrong," he said they've been saying for years and years Hezbollah was the ultimate badass that kept Israel in check and we can't move on anything beyond that." the Iranian proxy group "couldn't fight for s—t are just a bunch of tunnel rats with junkie rockets in the back of a Toyota truck And now the Houthis have been effectively neutered as well Fetterman's remarks come as the Trump administration barrels forward with negotiations over Iran's nuclear program that have so far been defined by mixed messages the administration said any deal would require Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff later suggested a deal could allow Iran to enrich uranium up to a certain level saying Iran must agree to "stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment" to ink a deal The punishing sanctions imposed by the first Trump administration brought Iran to the brink of bankruptcy, and Trump announced a return to his "maximum pressure" campaign when he returned to office this year The Iranian regime tried to have Trump assassinated before the 2024 presidential election the administration has looked for an off-ramp in the form of a new Iran deal—and has been in talks with the Islamic regime for weeks I completely understood why Trump withdrew from the Obama deal I can't understand why Trump would negotiate with this diseased regime The negotiations should be comprised of 30,000-pound bombs and the IDF," Fetterman said Witkoff, the longtime Trump confidant who is new to international diplomacy, has led the negotiations but has raised eyebrows for some high-profile missteps. In addition to the enrichment mix-up, Witkoff said in March that Hamas "duped" him during ceasefire negotiations Fetterman called the negotiating team "unimpressive and utterly bewildering." Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended the outreach arguing that "the Iranians have shown a willingness to talk we’re going to give peace and a peaceful resolution to this challenge every opportunity to succeed." Rubio noted that "Steve subsequently followed up by clarifying that what he meant is that that would be the limit of what they would be allowed to import for their domestic program Iran could import enriched uranium for a civil nuclear program but could not enrich its own Taking a more muscular approach to Iran has prompted criticism from the isolationist wings of Trump's movement who have warned it could lead to open war with Iran "It's not going to turn into World War III," Fetterman said "It's the acknowledgment that we'll never have a better opportunity." Ashley Biden's charity has a $500,000 discrepancy in its books a watchdog alleged in a complaint filed with the IRS on Monday figures that should have been reflected in the Women’s Wellness Spa(ce)’s Form 990 tax filing But the Women’s Wellness Spa(ce) told a much different story to the IRS, reporting in its 2023 tax filing that it received just $170,296 from all sources that year and that it didn’t receive any contributions from a single source greater than $5,000 seemingly contradicting the financial reporting of its two largest benefactors Ashley Biden signed the document as the charity’s president under penalty of perjury "Ashley Biden’s failure to disclose to the IRS receiving $500,000 in grants in 2023 raises the question of what other contributions is she hiding," Kamenar told the Washington Free Beacon Joe Biden also issued blanket pardons for his brothers Ashley Biden was one of the few members of Joe Biden’s immediate family who didn’t receive a pardon from the former president told the Free Beacon that the Archewell Foundation and Silicon Valley Community Foundation pledged their respective $250,000 grants in 2023 but didn’t distribute the bulk of the funds until 2024 "The Women’s Wellness Space received $150,000 in 2023 and will report the balance in 2024," Mangasarian said the Women’s Wellness Spa(ce) uses the accrual method of accounting which means it's required to disclose grants when they’re committed The watchdog said Ashley Biden could possibly have to pay a fine if the IRS confirms his assessment that she made errors in her charity’s 2023 tax return Archewell and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation did not return requests for comment Kamenar’s complaint Monday builds upon another IRS complaint he filed against Ashley Biden’s charity in March alleging she vastly overreported the amount of time she spent working for Women’s Wellness Spa(ce) and failed to disclose all the members of its board of directors in its 2023 tax return The Harvard Law Review is awarding a $65,000 fellowship meant to serve "the public interest" to Ibrahim Bharmal the Harvard Law School student who faced criminal charges for assaulting an Israeli classmate that work will come at the Council on American-Islamic Relations's Los Angeles office The law review claims to be separate from the law school, something a spokesman for Harvard, Jeff Neal, emphasized in a statement to the Free Beacon The fellowship could undercut those claims A Free Beacon review found that Harvard's database for grant and fellowship opportunities That advertisement states that a "committee of Harvard Law School and Harvard Law Review alumni in public interest careers chooses finalists from the set of applicants and a faculty committee interviews the finalists to select fellows," indicating Harvard faculty members signed off on Bharmal as a recipient Harvard Law School did not immediately respond to a request for comment attracted the attention of the Trump administration even before it launched the investigations into the prestigious law journal divinity school graduate student Elom Tettey-Tamaklo On that day, in 2023, Bharmal and Tettey-Tamaklo were shown shoving and accosting their Israeli classmate in a video first reported by the Free Beacon who assembled outside of the business school as part of a "die-in" protest condemning Israel's days-old retaliatory war on Hamas Bharmal and Tettey-Tamaklo were charged with misdemeanor assault months later one year before their expected graduation dates both students remained in good standing with Harvard which did not say whether it would award them degrees if they were convicted or if their proceedings remained active Both Harvard Law School and the Harvard Law Review stood by Bharmal throughout his court appearances "The Immigrant Rights Resistance Lives." Bharmal is the author internal messages obtained by the Free Beacon show Bharmal appeared in a Boston court on Monday, five days after publishing that "blog essay." There, a Suffolk County judge ordered him and Tettey-Tamaklo to perform 80 hours of community service and take an in-person anger management class as part of a pretrial diversion program that will bring an end to the case Update 7:05 p.m.: This piece has been updated with additional information Erol Ahmed on Unsplash Mental health vet Beacon Behavioral Partners is looking to expand through a strategic partnerships model with high-performing independent providers The diversified operator believes that bringing private practice providers into the fold can help unify different expertise and standardize care Beacon offers clinician groups equity and clinical autonomy “It’s about enabling and fostering [clinician leaders] and connecting them off the island of private practice and into a cohort – and a partnership – with other like-minded [leaders] that kind of feeds itself,” Austen Weatherly chief development officer at Beacon Behavioral Partners “It’s about really finding other doctors who want to share what makes their practice special because that’s what we’re looking for with these leaders and communities who are on the front lines of the mental health crisis.” the provider group has had a busy start to 2025 Beacon Behavioral Partners has strategically acquired five companies in the Northeast and South regions of the U.S. Those acquisitions include New Jersey-based providers Synapse Integrative Behavioral Health and Shore Clinical TMS & Wellness Center They also include Virginia- and Washington D.C.-based provider NeuroPsych Wellness Center along with Pennsylvania-based Cognizant Behavioral Health Services Texas- and Louisiana-based The Maples was yet another acquisition This growth builds on the company’s expansion plans. In February 2024, Beacon announced nine acquisitions Louisiana-based Beacon primarily focused on outpatient clinics early on it pivoted to inpatient care as well due to regulatory and reimbursement changes “I tell people all the time that we’ve had to be fluid because flexible is too rigid,” Sean Wendell And that’s what we’ve done over the years.” the provider offers a continuum of services including medication management and therapy It also offers a range of services for individuals with treatment-resistant depression Patients can also access intermediate levels of care intensive outpatient services (IOP) and more elevated levels of care The provider group has grown often through acquisitions of independent practices Beacon’s model is focused on keeping the same leadership Beacon can take on the operational side of the business “We handle all those things that doctors didn’t go to school to handle nor do they care to handle – all the billing “If we do a good job of doing that and let the doctors just focus on what they truly are passionate about including various private equity firms and PE-backed providers He noted that many of the potential buyers had little experience in the behavioral health space He was looking for buyers with aligned incentives that would allow him to keep his staff he wanted a combination of stocks and cash so that he could be invested in growing the business He had nearly abandoned the idea of selling until meeting with Beacon he said he is able to expand his offerings with support “We’ve been able to have the resources from the larger company to help bring in more doctors and more therapists … And we have resources from the other doctors in the group,” Holiner said which is a ketamine treatment for treatment-resistant depression and I was trying to figure out how to do it One of the doctors in our group is an expert on ketamine He helped come in and he held my hand and said ‘Here’s how you do it.’ He set the whole thing up showed me how to do the buying and billing and we now have over 50 patients a week getting ketamine.” Beacon now has 30 partners across 45 locations making it a major player in the behavioral health arena Weatherly noted that the behavioral health industry is still very fragmented and many private practice providers are disconnected from other practices and the care continuum and partnerships offer clinician founders a way to continue to practice without the billing and administrative burdens The M&A strategy may help larger standardization efforts as well Weatherly said the organization’s scope allows it to have one of the country’s largest unified behavioral health data sets These insights could help to advance care in the future “We will have the largest interventional psychiatry outcome measurements and data sets that are visible to all of our partners,” Weatherly said feel and see what’s working across the country They don’t just go to a conference and come back with some research and apply to their practice They are getting hands-on insight from each other and inside of that iteration you can establish best practice for what is evidence-based … across the country The goal is to get these patients better and out.” Beacon isn’t the only PE-backed mental health provider with an eye on acquisition Thurston Group-backed ARC illegitimate cause for legal action A bill aimed at strengthening Montanans’ First Amendment rights became law just days before World Press Freedom Day.  Earlier this week Gov. Greg Gianforte signed House Bill 292 which strengthens the public’s defenses against a legal maneuver known as a “strategic lawsuit against public participation.” SLAPPs use the legal process and associated costs to intimidate or suppress speech a plaintiff doesn’t like “A SLAPP may come in the form of defamation, invasion of privacy, nuisance or other claim, but its real goal is to entangle the defendant in expensive litigation and stifle their ability to engage in Constitutionally protected activities,” bill sponsor Rep. Tom Millett, R-Marion said while introducing the bill before the House Judiciary committee in February Sign up for our newsletter and get the best of the Beacon delivered every day to your inbox HB 292 allows for the early filing of a motion to dismiss a SLAPP and pauses all legal proceedings while the court considers that motion on an expedited timeline The law also requires that a defendant be awarded attorneys fees from plaintiffs if a SLAPP is dismissed Millett said Idaho’s anti-SLAPP bill, which became law in late March served as the inspiration for HB 292.  That is something that Montana should really embrace,’” Millett said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in late March.  a staff attorney at Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press said in an interview with Montana Free Press that nearly three-quarters of legislatures around the country have adopted some form of anti-SLAPP legislation RCFP provides pro bono legal representation and other legal resources to journalists.  “It’s a pattern we’re very excited to see,” said Griffin.  Griffin applauded Montana for “going from no anti-SLAPP law to this pretty robust version of an anti-SLAPP law.” Griffin said the legislation not only protects journalists after a story is published but also increases an outlet’s “willingness to fully report out and investigate that story.” the suit cost the defendants more than $200,000 in legal fees.  Griffin says the cases don’t always hit organizations that can afford it.  “The financial concerns that come with an expensive litigation weigh even more heavily on the local small newsrooms that do a lot of important on-the-ground coverage of towns and other places in Montana,” Griffin said a Nevada-based attorney who said he helped draft and organize the language now circulating legislatures around the country told  the House Judiciary Committee during his February testimony  that he’s personally faced two SLAPPs.  Montana Motion Picture Association and Uniform Law Commission also spoke in support of the bill at its February hearing in the House Judiciary Committee No opponents spoke on the bill during its House or Senate hearings.  The bill passed out of both chambers almost unanimously Only two lawmakers voted against the bill during its legislative journey.  communications and development director of the Montana Newspaper Association painted the bill as a common sense measure for the modern media landscape.  “This bill will help deter frivolous lawsuits that are brought with the sole purpose of limiting public participation limiting public comment and limiting media coverage,” Strauss said This story originally appeared in the Montana Free Press, which can be found online at montanafreepress.org The continued support from our readers keeps our lights on and helps sustain local independent journalism in northwest Montana Please consider a one-time gift or sign up for a recurring contribution and join more than 500 readers in the Editor’s Club Click here to read about the impact the Beacon has on the community. © 2025 Flathead Beacon, All Rights Reserved. mental health funding and Ohio’s refusal to fully implement the Fair School Funding Plan (a model shaped by Akron Public Schools’ former treasurer) − we need nothing short of excellence and integrity at the local level our board’s dysfunction has played directly into the hands of those seeking to undermine public education Rather than standing firm against external threats the board has mirrored the very chaos it was elected to resist When they should be fighting for our children While leaders in other districts focus on urgent challenges like budget cuts national declines in achievement and rising social-emotional needs Akron’s board members fixate on petty disputes or squander time with performative monologues These behaviors cost the community trust by diverting attention away from the threats we face and instead onto themselves Events surrounding Akron’s last three superintendents confirm this pattern The board narrowly approved the resignation of Michael Robinson on the same night they appointed Mary Outley Combined with the untimely departure of Christine Fowler Mack two years ago this reflects a disturbing trend: The board’s failure to fulfill its responsibility to appoint and support exceptional leadership Fowler Mack appears to have been driven out by compulsive micromanagement who brings deep experience and strong relationships is now in a role needlessly clouded by the board’s bizarre approach to her appointment even a highly qualified leader like Outley will be hamstrung Board leadership entails setting shared goals with district leadership asking tough questions about progress and maintaining relentless focus on student outcomes the board can and should offer trust in response to challenges not retreat to micromanagement or self-aggrandizement The balance of high expectations and genuine collaboration is the essence of accountability It’s what responsible boards do − and what Akron’s children deserve Serving on the school board is a solemn commitment to public service that requires preparedness it has become a (mis)perceived stepping stone for personal ambition to city council or state legislature This misjudgment reveals a deep misunderstanding of the board’s essential responsibility explaining the dysfunction that now defines it This district has dedicated teachers and staff engaged families and unparalleled community After several years largely out of the limelight and focusing on construction, Craven said, brands revived the meme to target ads to millennials, who now have robust purchasing power and fondly remember early memes like his. In 2025, Hyundai used his meme and likeness in a commercial that aired during the NFL championship games a Kent State construction management graduate has also done some acting in short clips − for instance working with Shaquille O'Neal on an ad for The General Insurance Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said he was familiar with Bad Luck Brian but didn't know until recently that the man behind the meme was local When he found out Craven was signing to buy Quaker Square from the University of Akron On a sunny Friday in April, Craven sat down at the Akron location of one of his favorite restaurants, Rockne's, to talk about his life as a meme over a shared plate of a go-to dish of his, bacon cheddar fries My kids won a couple of tickets or something The old school Scumbag Steve memes are really funny I feel like everybody knows a guy like that growing up and it's really hilarious just reading the text and going I can relate to that.' But as far as Bad Luck Brian I think my favorite one that I have seen of my meme was 'Parents get divorced / No one fights over custody.' We got reached out (to) from an advertising company that wanted to license the photo for a billboard for an orthodontics clinic why don't we work a deal where you pay for our flights do some photos and also we can see the billboard at the same time?' And they're like 'I can't believe you want to come to Slovakia.' So we ended up going and spent a week over there that marketing company that brought me out there − we're great friends They do all my marketing for my construction company now They're going to do Quaker Square marketing for us And then we eat more.' And they couldn't believe it 'You're more than welcome to come to my house for Thanksgiving.' (the) offer still stands if you guys want to come to Thanksgiving at my house.' Next thing I know they booked tickets and they're coming over They brought some wine from Slovakia and some gifts for the kids He gets on set (for The General commercial) and beelines right over to me 'I am so glad we're working together on this I know all about Kyle and Bad Luck Brian and Ian Somebody has to fill him in.' He was so on top of it I do get a lot of people that look at me in public and somebody in the line − not the workers because the workers do usually know who I am − it's always people in line that give me a weird look I want people to know that I am from Akron and they're not crazy to think they might have saw Bad Luck Brian at Chipotle in Fairlawn or wherever This interview has been edited for length and clarity Patrick Williams covers growth and development for the Akron Beacon Journal He can be reached by email at pwilliams@gannett.com or on X There’s a thousand years of Chinese history in “The Chow Maniac,” 12th (if you include an e-short story) in the Noodle Shop Mystery series by Cleveland author Vivien Chien Introduced in 2018’s “Death by Dumpling,” narrator Lana Lee manages her family’s Ho-Lee Noodle House restaurant in Asia Village a fictional version of Cleveland’s AsiaTown and Asian Town Center The plaza’s vendors are all in each other’s business with a mixture of support and gossip whose shop sells herbal remedies and who is so esteemed that no one even knows his first name who has opened a shop selling healing crystals “pillars of the Asian community,” seem unrelated — a fall a garage asphyxiation — but private investigator Lydia Shepard visits Lana to recruit her as a “consultant,” explaining that a client insists that the deaths are not only related but calculated Because of Lana’s insight into Cleveland’s rich Chinese community and her reputation as an amateur detective Lydia wants Lana to meet with her client to hear the details First Lana has to promise that she won’t reveal anything about the investigation Lydia explains that her client claims that the three men were members of a secret group called the Eight Immortals which brings to mind a group with the same name from Chinese mythology each Immortal carried an identifying object fewer than a hundred Chinese lived in Cleveland Eight Chinese businessmen formed a new group of Immortals Lydia tells Lana that her client believes that the victims are descendants of the original Immortals Lana spills her news to her best friend and even to her handsome police detective boyfriend Her association with Lydia takes the place of Lana’s contentious relationship with her sister Anna May who barely shows up in “Chow Maniac.” It’s a welcome addition a quartet of customers who arrive daily at opening time and act like the Chinese version of a Greek chorus Lana’s hair has lavender streaks this time around; The harassment charge was listed as a summary offense kicked or otherwise subjected the other person to physical contact followed the other person in or about a public place or places or engaged in a course of conduct of repeatedly committed acts which served no legitimate purpose." A Browns spokesperson said the team was "aware" of the situation and "gathering more information." Bush would also be subject to NFL punishment through the Personal Code of Conduct process The NFL has not responded to a request for comment The incident involved Bush and his girlfriend contacted the police and "stated that her boyfriend assaulted her and took her car keys" to a black two-door Hyundai The complaint states that the two were involved in an argument Sunday morning and that Bush "became more aggressive." Victim 1 "began to video record the argument on her cell phone." "began to chase her through the house trying to get the phone." He finally got to her in the home's office where "Victim 1 stated that she clutched her phone to her chest while she was pinned against a massage table in the office" and that "Bush was aggressively trying to get her phone off of her for an extended period of time." Victim 1 said "Bush was finally able to retrieve the phone from her and smashed it so that she could not call for help." He also sought her iPad for the same reason Victim 1 was able to escape with her daughter to the neighbor's residence which is where she was located when police arrived The police officer "could observe an abrasion/cut on the inside of the right wrist" of the victim as well as an "abrasion on the outside of her right foot near her pinky toe," which she claimed "occurred from the struggle with Bush trying to take her phone." The arresting officer spoke with Bush at the residence and he "did admit to smashing the cell phone but denied getting physical with Victim 1." The officer "observed smashed pieces of the cell phone near the front door and inside the front office." was re-signed by the Browns this offseason after having played in 16 games with 10 starts a year ago He was originally a 2019 first-round draft pick (No 10 overall) of the Pittsburgh Steelers out of the University of Michigan Chris Easterling can be reached at ceasterling@thebeaconjournal.com Read more about the Browns at www.beaconjournal.com/sports/browns Dean was a 1979 Coshocton High School graduate and later became the owner and operator of Hall Brother Trucking for 25 years Dean attended the Presbyterian Church of Coshocton He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and tinkering in the garage and he will be deeply missed by all those who knew him Ritchie Ann Hall of West Lafayette; his children Bev (Tom) Hicks of West Lafayette; his mother-in-law Kitty Hoffman of West Lafayette; and his brother-in-law along with several much-loved nieces and nephews a cremation will take place with a celebration of life to be held at a later date Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home is serving the family memorial contributions may be made in Dean’s name to the American Stroke Association An online memorial can be viewed at www.given-dawson-paisleyfh.com and Alex (Niyah) Dingman who is in the military; a niece she leaves behind three aunts and an uncle Jeffrey Earl (Michelle) Veigel; and a grandson Vicki graduated from college and had a military job with the highest rank a civilian can achieve Her dad was serving in Vietnam when she was born so she lived in Walhonding with her grandparents she lived in Nellie and attended Warsaw Grade School A private burial will take place by her family at a later date in Valley View Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her mother Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw is assisting the family Memorial donations are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project, support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
