The FWC had three virtual public feedback meetings in April for the proposed return of the bear hunt
The primary objectives of regulated hunting are to balance species population numbers with suitable habitat and to maintain a healthy population
The draft of the proposal that will be presented to commissioners is expected to be ready for public review by Wednesday
The proposal indicates that 55 will be permitted for harvest from Lee
The last black bear hunt happened a decade ago, but the planned 7-day hunt was shut down at the end of the second day after nearly 300 bears were killed
The FWC estimates there are more than 4,000 black bears in the state

COLLIER COUNTY
– There was an ongoing search Monday night for the black bear or bears that killed a man and his dog near Jerome in Florida’s Collier County
Leer en español
The 88-year-old man identified as Robert Markel vanished on Monday morning just south of the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area
Markel’s daughter called 911 to report that she had seen a black bear mauling her father’s dog near a house off State Road 29 and she couldn’t find her father
Officials later announced Markel’s remains had been recovered in a wooded area off SR-29 near Copeland
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission urged caution amid an increase in human encounters with black bears
“We urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and avoid the area,” FWC Officer George Reynaud said
FWC officers remained at the scene throughout the evening
two separate instances of what sounded like some sort of gunshots could be heard
it took at least half a dozen officers to carry a bear out of the woods as the search progressed
we don’t know if it was the same bear or multiple bears,” said Reynaud

these playful siblings have found a new life in the Texas Wild
capturing hearts with their contrasting personalities and curious antics
The one-year-old American black bear cubs — rescued after being orphaned in Montana — are the newest residents at the Fort Worth Zoo
where they’ve quickly made themselves at home in the Texas Wild
the siblings are already drawing attention for their contrasting coats and curious personalities: Cinnamon with her sunlit rust coloring and fearless energy
and Raisin with the classic black bear look and a more laid-back approach to his surroundings
Wildlife & Parks after losing their mother
because of the cubs’ young age and growing comfort around humans
returning them to the wild wouldn’t be safe
The Fort Worth Zoo — already home to black bears since 2001 and backed by the kind of resources and staff experience that make this kind of long-term care possible — stepped in to provide a permanent home
Their new territory is the Pineywoods & Swamps habitat
which walks visitors through a series of Lone Star landscapes — from desert to forest and everything in between
Cinnamon and Raisin wasted no time testing out their new surroundings: climbing logs
and generally behaving like two toddlers on a sugar high
American black bears (Ursus americanus) don’t always come in black
Their coats can range from blond to silver
the Fort Worth Zoo points out that even cubs in the same litter can be different colors — a detail on full display with this sibling duo
What they do tend to have in common is a brown muzzle and an uncanny ability to adapt
today’s black bears are omnivores who’ll eat just about anything: berries
and occasionally the leftovers from a poorly secured picnic cooler
capable of hitting 30 miles per hour and scaling trees like it’s nothing
they’re mostly crepuscular — active at dawn and dusk — but bears living closer to people sometimes flip their schedules in search of easier meals
Though Cinnamon and Raisin won’t be returning to the forests of Montana
they’ve found a version of wild that works
Surrounded by the careful balance of conservation and care
they’re getting the second chance most orphaned cubs never do
And judging by the videos on the Fort Worth Zoo’s Instagram feed — where the pair can be seen wrestling in water and inspecting every inch of their new home — they’re making the most of it
“Providing a home for animals that are no longer able to live in their natural habitat is another way the Zoo remains committed to the care and conservation of all species,” the Zoo posted

There was some startling news May 5 as wildlife officials reported a black bear attack may have resulted in the death of a man and a dog just south of Big Cypress Wildlife Management
This comes a little more than one year after Florida Gov
Ron DeSantis signed what is known as the "Taking of Bears" bill
or officially in the books as House Bill (HB) 87
The act provides an exemption from penalties for killing bears without permits or authorization under certain circumstances
It passed 88-29 in the Florida House on Feb
15 while the Senate's version SB 632 passed 24-12 in the Florida Senate days later
The bill's analysis says it would exempt people from any administrative
civil or criminal penalties for killing a bear if:
The person is believed that it was necessary to avoid imminent death or serious bodily injury to their self
another person or a pet.The person did not lure the bear with food or attractants for an illegal purpose
training dogs to hunt bears. The person didn’t intentionally or recklessly put their self or pet in a situation where they would need to use lethal force.Anyone who takes a bear must notify FWC within 24 hours
it drew in heavy criticism from wildlife activists
Defenders of Wildlife
officials for the organizations stated that the bill's language could leave room for bears to be killed without them posing any actual threat
However, some shared their support for the bill. In an interview with Politico, hunting advocate Lane Stephens said the bill would allow residents to feel assured they could protect themselves in their homes
The FWC says if you encounter a bear at close range
back up slowly and speak to the bear in a calm
do not make any sudden or abrupt movements
Back way slowly and be sure the bear has an obvious escape route."

BY MITCH HARPER
Utah – BYU football continues to benefit from the coaching change at Stanford
The latest example was BYU landing Stanford wide receiver transfer Tiger Bachmeier and QB Bear Bachmeier. They join Nusi Taumoepeau
Stanford is currently coached by interim Frank Reich
who will be in the role for only this season
who coached the Cardinal for the past two seasons
The Bachmeier brothers could have an impact right away at BYU in 2025
Let’s start with wide receiver Tiger Bachmeier
The former class of 2023 signee was a four-star prospect
he made an instant impact on “The Farm.” Bachmeier led all Pac-12 true freshmen in receptions (36) and receiving yards (409) in 2023
Welcome to the Family @tigerbachmeier 🤙 pic.twitter.com/0GDkzmFxEn
— BYU FOOTBALL (@BYUfootball) May 4, 2025
he started six games and was a co-starter at receiver on Stanford’s depth chart
He still made his impact felt as a return specialist
where he had a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown against Cal Poly
His impact on the gridiron sounds like the role former BYU receiver and reported Miami commit Keelan Marion occupied the past two seasons
Tiger Bachmeier is listed at 6 feet 1 inch
What a catch by Tiger Bachmeier 👏 pic.twitter.com/DR8DRn3aa2
— Pac-12 Network (@Pac12Network) September 24, 2023
Marion’s departure after spring practices was significant for BYU
BYU has another receiver with college experience who could fill that void left by Marion
Parker Kingston and Cody Hagen will be some of the top contenders to battle Bachmeier for the starting role
Bachmeier could be used in BYU’s offense like former BYU star Puka Nacua
BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick could utilize Tiger’s speed in BYU’s rushing attack
That’s how Marion’s role evolved coming out of spring ball
Bachmeier is a former track and field athlete who ran an 11.4 100-meter dash at Murrieta Valley High School
BYU can use his athleticism in creative ways
Tiger has two years of eligibility remaining in his college career
Bear Bachmeier was a four-star quarterback prospect by the 247Sports Composite as a prep recruit in the class of 2025
He enrolled at Stanford during the winter quarter and participated during the first two weeks of spring practice for the Cardinal in a young quarterback unit before entering the NCAA Transfer Portal
Bachmeier entered the portal and landed at BYU
BYU’s offensive staff offered him as a high school recruit in the 2025 cycle
but he went off the board early to the Cardinal
Welcome to the Family @bearb47 🤙 pic.twitter.com/rRDOAJkuRL
— BYU FOOTBALL (@BYUfootball) May 4, 2025
Now he’s off to BYU and has a chance to add to the backup quarterback battle behind Jake Retzlaff this fall
Roderick was clear that the backup competition would continue into fall camp
Neither McCae Hillstead nor Treyson Bourguet did enough to cement themselves as the clear-cut No
Hillstead and Bourguet were in Southern California this past week
That leaves Bachmeier with an opportunity to push for the job
It’s a coveted spot as it lays the groundwork for what BYU does in 2026 after Jake Retzlaff’s eligibility expires this fall
Bachmeier was a starter for three seasons at Murrieta Valley High
the type of signal-caller Roderick’s offenses have experienced the most success with: Zach Wilson
👨🍼@MaxPreps @overtime @SportsCenter pic.twitter.com/XmVMdcMsWT
— Bear Bachmeier (@bearb47) October 2, 2023
Bachmeier had 30 rushing touchdowns and gained 1,724 yards on the ground
Bachmeier has solid measurables at 6 feet 2 inches and 225 pounds
Bachmeier is the second-highest rated QB signee BYU has landed since Aaron Roderick joined the staff in 2018
So there will be expectations for him to be a potential difference maker
so fall camp should be fascinating to see how he competes against Hillstead and Bourguet

A feasibility report using historical maps and ecological data is raising excitement: ‘It would be a slow process’
On the eve of the gold rush, California was teeming with grizzly bears – as many as 10,000 of them
They were so popular that the Bear Flag Republic – a short-lived attempt by a group of US settlers to break away from Mexico in 1846 – used the animals as their mascot; an image that still adorns California’s flag
The last documented sighting of a grizzly bear in California was in the spring of 1924 in Sequoia national park
an inevitable question has hung in the air: could the majestic grizzly return to the Golden state
New research says they could. Peter Alagona, an environmental historian at the University of California at Santa Barbara who led the feasibility report
started researching grizzlies more than a decade ago
As he pored over historical maps and ecological data
he started to feel excited about the potential for the species to return
“The extinction of grizzlies in California had not been inevitable by any means
and their recovery is probably not impossible either,” he says
“even though that’s the story people have been kind of telling for 100 years.”

Photograph: George Rose/Getty ImagesAt 800lb (360kg) and standing 9ft (2.5 meters) tall
the bears served as a powerful symbol for Indigenous groups and California settlers alike
They were probably among the world’s biggest and most carnivorous brown bears
a group that also lives in eastern Europe and Russia
fewer than 2,000 grizzlies live in the contiguous US
California could host more than 1,000 more
Returning them to the state could offer numerous benefits
including keeping herbivore populations in check
aerating the soil with their digging and cycling nutrients
which contributes to ecological diversity and health
There are still many parts of the state that could support a robust grizzly population
They pinpoint three regions: the north-west forest near the Oregon border
the southern Sierra Nevada and the south-western region that includes the mountains near Santa Barbara
Even after the animals disappeared due to conflicts with humans
large areas of their former habitat remained
the prospect is an exciting change to the narrative he has grown up with
“But science actually shows that’s not the case
“We’ve got the largest acreage of protected areas of any state
California still has plenty of space for one or more populations of grizzlies
I think that the question is really whether people are interested
enthusiastic and willing to support this.”
Alagona says it’s not the fault of the bears
“The way we handle them and the way we live with them is the problem.”
There are some areas where humans and grizzlies live together
And any reintroduction effort would happen slowly
Officials would start reintroducing a very small number of wild-born female bears from Montana
Idaho or Wyoming into the most remote areas of habitat – probably in the southern Sierra
So it’s unlikely that Californians – even in the future – would catch a glimpse of them
“And then you’d learn and monitor and watch and let people know how it’s going
and work with local people in the communities
deliberate and careful process,” Alagona says

in places from Yellowstone to South America
Not only were the animals a keystone species in ecology
they were also essential parts of cultural practices for Indigenous groups
Some chiefs even kept grizzlies as pets and gifted them to other leaders
“Native people and grizzlies had been forced to walk parallel paths,” writes Octavio Escobedo III
“Although California has changed dramatically over the last century
stories and history remain interwoven with the grizzly
allowing us to remember and imagine what once was.”
it will be up to the people of California to make this feasibility plan a reality

And while that's usually the case for every team's starting quarterback
who spent the first overall pick on Williams in 2024
the Bears organization will be set back for a decade or more
It's why GM Ryan Poles has dedicated so many offseason resources to building the roster around Williams
and new pass-catchers have been added through high draft picks and mid-tier free-agency signings
As a result, the Chicago Tribune's Dan Wiederer believes Williams has everything he needs to take off in his second season
The Tennessean-USA TODAY NETWORK"Since last season ended — with a game-winning drive at Lambeau Field — the Bears brought in one of the league’s brightest and most proven play callers in coach Ben Johnson," Wiederer wrote
"They fortified the interior of their offensive line with a trio of tough
And the weaponry around Williams — DJ Moore
D’Andre Swift and now Loveland and Burden — sure looks good enough on paper for the Bears to have a potent offense."
The Chicago Bears haven't looked this exciting since Jay Cutler was under center
handing off to Matt Forte and tossing dimes to Brandon Marshall
Williams is far superior to the talent Cutler was
and there's at least an argument that the combination of Moore and Odunze can put up numbers similar to Marshall and Jeffery
What the Bears are lacking is a surefire stud running back
but there's still time for an upgrade to be added in veteran free agency
or for an unheralded rookie like Kyle Monangai to emerge as a late-round gem
"For as many legitimate topics as we touch on during a busy offseason like this
the most important conversation still centers around Williams," Wiederer wrote
The answers should become more apparent over the next eight months

The brothers are transferring from Stanford and project to be key players of the immediate and long-term plans for the BYU program
committed Saturday morning at the end of his visit
He is a class of 2025 recruit who committed to Stanford out of high school and enrolled there this spring
Both Bachmeiers elected to transfer in the wake of Stanford's dismissal of head coach Troy Taylor in March
After visiting BYU coach Kalani Sitake's program in recent days
For Bear, he is expected to be one of the backups for successful incumbent quarterback Jake Retzlaff in 2025 and compete for the starting job at BYU in 2026
Bear was attracted to BYU's open offensive scheme and a rich history of quarterbacks that includes a strong recent run under offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick
He also referenced BYU's historical success
which stretches from Jim McMahon to Ty Detmer to Steve Young
"The ability to come in and win games and [Coach] Roderick's scheme and the pedigree of quarterbacks they have produced in history and recently is enticing," Bear told ESPN
Tiger told ESPN he committed to BYU later Saturday
He'll arrive at BYU having graduated from Stanford in two-and-a-half years with a degree in computer science
Tiger will be expected to be an immediate contributor at wide receiver
He caught 46 balls over two seasons at Stanford for 476 yards and two touchdowns
Bear and Tiger are the second and third brothers to play major college football in their family. Their older brother, Hank Bachmeier
where his college career concluded last year
There is one more Bachmeier brother remaining: Buck Bachmeier will be a freshman in high school in the fall

The Cougars are adding a Bear and a Tiger to the fold
Bear and Tiger Bachmeier are transferring from Stanford to BYU
Former Stanford QB Bear Bachmeier has committed to BYU, he tells ESPN. Bachmeier visited the last few days and committed on Saturday morning. pic.twitter.com/nm6WXVuRqx
The news came one day after Bear Bachmeier shared on social media that he went on a visit to BYU’s campus
Thamel had reported that Tiger Bachmeier was also on the visit
“There’s an expectation the brothers want to play together,” Thamel wrote Friday
📍 pic.twitter.com/Pq9X06gnU2
The Bachmeiers are the younger brothers of former Boise State quarterback and Cougars opponent Hank Bachmeier
Bear Bachmeier held a 4-star rating from 247 Sports as the No
28 high school quarterback prospect in the country for the class of 2025
He enrolled early at Stanford and participated in spring ball with the program before entering the transfer portal in April
“Bachmeier is an exciting dual-threat quarterback who can beat a defense with his arm or his legs,” wrote Greg Biggins of 247 Sports
he’s built like a tank and can take off and run for big yards and does a nice job escaping initial pressure and extending plays
“He can also beat you from the pocket and is a very competent thrower
quick release and can throw form different arm angles
He’s comfortable throwing rolling out to either direction
a wide receiver who played the past two seasons at Stanford
caught 46 passes for 476 yards and two touchdowns during that time
He was also a 4-star prospect out of high school
he’ll likely compete with McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet to back up Jake Retzlaff in 2025 while working towards someday becoming the Cougars’ starting QB
“The ability to come in and win games and OC Aaron Roderick’s scheme and the pedigree of quarterbacks they have produced in history and recently is enticing,” Bachmeier told Thamel

The California Highway Patrol was called to the scene of a vehicle accident around 5 a.m
on Trenton Road and River Road near Forestville
male black bear was struck and killed Tuesday by a vehicle near Forestville
a California Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson
the California Highway Patrol responded to a call that a white Chevy pickup truck hit a bear near Trenton Road and River Road
The driver was traveling River Road in the early morning darkness when he struck the bear
the bear was alive and walking around before it eventually laid down on the shoulder and died
CHP officers alerted the state Department of Fish and Wildlife
which sent a wildlife biologist to collect the bear’s body
adding that a necropsy would be performed on the animal
Fish and Wildlife personnel also collected tooth and genetic samples from the bear that will help to determine the bear’s age
adding that the necropsy will confirm the bear died from injuries related to the crash
the executive director of the Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue
said the bear’s death highlights the need for wildlife crossings in Sonoma County
She called the incident “tragic” and said she wants the organization to not only focus on rescuing animals
but also on the “bigger picture” of conservation
“Highways can be — not only a source of unnecessary wildlife deaths but they can also break up connectivity between wildlife habitats,” Kellum said Thursday in an email
“This is where the need for wildlife crossings come into play and why we monitor the movement of collared wildlife
roadkill incidents and other data to determine where placement of wildlife crossings will be most effective.”
“We can’t put wildlife crossings everywhere
so it’s important for motorists to always be alert and on the lookout for the wildlife that we share this state with as each species has an essential role in California’s unique ecosystem,” she said

Bachmeier signed with Stanford a few months ago
When Stanford head coach Troy Taylor was fired in March
Bachmeier opted to enter the transfer portal
The addition of Bachmeier reshapes the future of the quarterback position at BYU
that the transfer portal makes future roster planning more difficult than ever before
BYU has mitigated some future risk at the quarterback position
There is risk associated with relying on the December transfer window
It's impossible to know which players will be available and what their eligibilty will look like
Even if you find a starting-caliber quarterback
there are unknowns in terms of fit within BYU's scheme and fit within the locker room
That is a slippery slope to mediocre offense in the long run
BYU would like to have players in the system for at least a year
That allows the players to get comfortable in the offense and it allows BYU to evaluate whether that quarterback is truly capable of starting in Aaron Roderick's offense
the Cougars had just three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: Jake Retzlaff
With Jake Retzlaff entering his senior season in 2025
the future of the quarterback position appeared to be either McCae Hillstead/Treyson Bourguet or a transfer quarterback that BYU could add after the 2025 season
Even if BYU felt good about either Hillstead or Bourguet in 2026
they would have needed a transfer quarterback from purely a numbers perspective
BYU has more options at its disposal and more clarity in the future
and Bear Bachmeier will compete against each other for the backup quarterback job in 2025
They will also be proving to Aaron Roderick that one of them can become the starter in 2026
Hillstead and Bourguet will have the advantage in Fall camp with more knowledge of the playbook
but Bachmeier will be given the chance to push for that spot throughout the season
Don't be surprised if that battle extends into the season
BYU can let that battle play out in practice
BYU can evaluate the progression of those three quarterbacks
If they have seen enough to feel good about one of them being the full-time starter
they can go into the 2026 with the guys that were on the roster in 2025
BYU can dip into the transfer portal like they would have needed to do otherwise
BYU has increased their chances of finding a quarterback of the future
he will not be forced to play as a true freshman
he will have all of his eligibility remaining and a chance to compete for the starting job
McCae Hillstead is entering his second year in the program and he showed flashes of greatness during Spring camp
he was the favorite to beat out Bourguet for the backup job
Hillstead has big-play ability and he showed that as a true freshman at Utah State in 2023
That competition is exactly what BYU wants
The Cougars will let the competition play out in 2025 and go into 2026 with a few options at their disposal

The Chicago Bears welcomed eight new rookies to the roster in the 2025 NFL draft
which included some potential impact contributors on offense under first-year head coach Ben Johnson
Chicago's biggest selections were tight end Colston Loveland
who the Bears lucked into in the second round
They also added a pair of offensive linemen in tackle Ozzy Trapilo and guard Luke Newman
as well as a sleeper in running back Kyle Monangai
Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle recently discussed the team's new offensive rookies with ChicagoBears.com
where he's impressed with what he's seen from them in college and how that could translate to the NFL
Here's what Doyle had to say about Chicago's new rookie draft picks on offense:
The Bears drafted tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick
adding another weapon for Ben Johnson's offense
Chicago believes Loveland is a dynamic tight end who will present mismatches for defenders
"The versatility on both base and third down
that was really the biggest thing that stood out," Doyle said
he's a guy that doesn't ever have to come off the field if you don't want him to."
Loveland grew up in the small town of Gooding
he has some dog to him where he's barking at guys," Doyle said
I can remember him finishing on the sideline multiple times and looking at the DB or whoever he just beat and just letting him know."
The Bears landed a steal in receiver Luther Burden III
who many had pegged as a first-round talent that went in the second round
Doyle described Burden as "a weapon with the ball in his hands" and an "explosive talent." He believes Burden can impact the game in a multitude of ways
"You can use him in a lot of different ways," Doyle said
figure out what he does well and see if we can find ways to get him touches where he can impact the game
We're just trying to build depth and competitiveness at each position
They felt good about the value of that pick
and the more guys that can come in and contribute for us
OT Ozzy TrapiloThe Bears landed a versatile offensive tackle in Ozzy Trapilo in the second round
and it sounds like he has the opportunity to compete for the starting left tackle job as a rookie
Trapilo started at right tackle the past two seasons
"He's really a high-level kid with high-level character," Doyle said
"I feel really good about him maximizing all of his ability in the NFL
"I think he's going to do exactly what we ask of him
he's 'yes sir' or 'no sir,' so I think that relationship's going to be really good with [Bears coaches]."
Luke Newman is the latest addition to Chicago's overhauled interior offensive line
While he won't start right away --- with newcomers Joe Thuney
Drew Dalman and Jonah Jackson leading the way -- he could develop into a contributor down the line
Newman might be one of the most underrated players in this Bears rookie draft class
"You watch him on tape and he's one of the best finishers as an offensive lineman in the draft," Doyle said
"Being able to talk to him in my office and be able to give him that compliment
"As you get to that latter part of the draft
you're trying to find guys that are going to come in and compete
lunch pail coming-to-work [kind of guy] and he's going to be great for us."
While many expected the Bears to go running back a lot earlier
they did eventually land a potential late-round gem in Kyle Monangai
who Doyle described as "a guy who runs angry," in the seventh round
Monangai has the potential to carve out a role for himself as a rookie as he competes with veterans D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson for carries
"There's a lot to be developed there when guys run that way," Doyle said
"He's a physical runner who's going to come in and do the dirty work and really going to add to that room and compete
and that's really what we were looking for in that slot."

I returned to photojournalism not just for work
but because I have loved photography since childhood," said Palestinian reporter Sami Shahada

Ahead of World Press Freedom Day marked annually on 3 May which focuses on the role of media to highlight accountability
our UN News correspondent in Gaza spoke with Palestinian journalists
documenting the risks and personal traumas they face reporting from the war-torn enclave
Since the war began following the 7 October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel an increasing number of journalists have been killed or injured in Gaza as a humanitarian crisis has engulfed the enclave
working amongst the rubble of destruction with colleagues
and then the moment came when I was a witness to a crime that was perpetrated against me,” he told UN News

That incident marked a turning point in his life
now I need help,” adding that “I have the determination and persistence to overcome this new reality
This is how we journalists must work in Gaza.”
Journalist Mohammed Abu Namous is another of these journalists
Filming with one of his colleagues in the rubble of a destroyed building in Gaza City he said: "While the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day
Palestinian journalists remember their workplaces which were destroyed in the war.”
“The minimum we need to carry out our journalistic work is electricity and the internet
so we resort to commercial shops that provide the internet
He believes that Palestinian journalists have been targeted during the Israeli occupation of Gaza and said that media workers must be protected “whether they work in Palestine or elsewhere in the world.”
Journalist Moamen Sharafi said he lost members of his family in an Israeli bombing in northern Gaza
but despite “the many negative impacts on a personal
as he was due to live broadcast from the streets of Gaza City
“We have become more determined to continue our work and uphold our professional values and perform our mission with humanity to the world,” he continued
“in order to convey the reality of what is happening on the ground inside Gaza

Two months into a devastating aid blockade of Gaza food has run out and people are fighting over water amid relentless bombing
the UN’s humanitarian affairs coordination office (OCHA) said on Friday.
