or buying a slice or a sandwich to-go from Nannie Franco’s
who encourages employees to cook “like it’s your mother’s last meal on earth.” The Angelo’s line ebbs and flows
often wrapping around the corner of Fitzwater Street
The crowd doesn’t disperse after they’ve placed their orders
Most folks hang around outside to wait for their food — Angelo’s is a takeout shop set up in a 17-foot-wide rowhouse
and there’s hardly room for more than a handful of people to wait inside by the counter
A sign that’s been posted on Angelo’s door for over a year reads: “Please be respectful of our neighbors and the neighborhood and do not sit on other peoples [sic] steps
plenty of customers choose to eat right then and there: on the hood of their cars
Some might romanticize this experience as a South Philly ritual
A contingent of Bella Vistans are fed up with the crush of Angelo’s customers — one neighbor estimates it to be 100 to 300 people a day — that descends on their neighborhood day in and day out
and rowdy patrons who relieve themselves in the small residential side streets around the pizza shop
Tensions are set to come to a head at a community meeting this week at the nearby Palumbo Recreation Center
City Councilmember Mark Squilla said he has been working with Angelo’s for about six months on addressing neighbors’ issues
but “we’re hoping to be able to get more concerns addressed through this following meeting.”
“I’ve gotten maybe a dozen neighbors at least emailing me separately about how they can’t get their kids to Palumbo Rec Center safely because there are cars obstructing the ADA ramps,” said Bella Vista Neighbors Association board president Eugene Desyatnik
Some neighbors closer to the shop have reported property damage to their stoops and cellar doors
Since a prior community meeting Squilla held in the fall
The city installed several plastic bollards at each corner of the intersection at Ninth and Fitzwater to deter cars from parking illegally
They’re not aesthetically pleasing or 100% effective
but they have cut down on cars blocking the crosswalks
it’s hard to get support for things,” Squilla said
said that the shop’s ownership “understands and is aware of certain concerns raised by some neighbors” and has worked to address whatever concerns have been brought to their attention to the extent possible
Angelo’s has placed additional trash cans outside and empties them throughout the day
DiGiampietro has asked the shop’s trash hauler to change which street and what time it picks up in order to accommodate neighbors’ requests
“Angelo’s strives to be a great community partner and is always willing to engage in productive conversations with its neighbors,” Lechtman and Kelsen said in a statement
adding the business is working with Squilla’s office to respond to concerns
Squilla said that while some Bella Vista residents have been appreciative of the efforts made thus far
because not everything has been accomplished..
Hopefully we’ll get to that point where both sides [can] live harmoniously.”
Desyatnik sees irony in Angelo’s predicament
it’s a victim of its own success,” he said
“That’s something that’s kind of in [Angelo’s] culture now,” said Bella Vista resident John McKenzie
who helped facilitate the first community meeting
McKenzie lives on one of most tucked-away of Bella Vista’s small side streets
but he said people peeing outside his house is a weekly occurrence
“It’s very easy for them to find this little secluded area as a place to use the bathroom,” he said
It’s what prompted him to reach out to Squilla
who arranged a meeting in November for residents to air their grievances
“There were neighbors that lived right there [on the 700 block of South Ninth] saying
my space is being used as this restaurant’s,’” McKenzie recalled
Even farther-afield neighbors feel the effects
There’s people beeping their horn because people are blocking stuff,” McKenzie said
acknowledging the improvement the city’s delineator posts have made in clearing the crosswalks
But it doesn’t solve the traffic headache completely: Sysco delivery trucks routinely block Fitzwater Street on days Angelo’s is open
“They’ll put their cone up and park there for like 45 minutes,” McKenzie said
He’s asked the Philadelphia Parking Authority to intervene before but was told the agency can’t ticket the truck unless it’s unattended
Some fear the parking situation will get worse once the Rite-Aid that’s limping along at Ninth and Catharine closes; developer Ori Feibush owns the property
and they’re betting that it will be converted into apartments
The Rite Aid’s parking lot currently serves as de facto Angelo’s parking
and if it’s gone or designated for tenants
Palmer recognizes that common decency isn’t enforceable
“Catching people littering in Philadelphia
But he points to other restaurants in the neighborhood as models of stewardship
including the Saloon and Angelo’s predecessor
is married to one of Louis Sarcone Sr.’s granddaughters.) “People would go in
Palmer plans to attend the meeting to hear what solutions Angelo’s might offer to troubled neighbors
“It’s really not up to us to fix the problem for them
“I just wish that they were like Jim’s Steaks down on South Street
“This pizza place in this rowhouse has now become a huge business around other rowhouses.”
Some neighbors indicated they’d be happy if Angelo’s made an effort to be part of the broader neighborhood — contributing to the sidewalk-sweeping fund
Desyatnik said Angelo’s might take a page from John’s Water Ice
(The Bella Vista Neighbors Association hasn’t had direct contact with Angelo’s
said that the restaurant “frequently provides free food in support of community and charitable events and groups
I do not have the specifics but can tell you that this has been their way of giving back to the community both local and beyond.”
Others hope some leverage might be gained in pressing on the variance granted to 736 S. Ninth St. (Angelo’s current address) in 2007
A Bella Vista community organization approved the variance request at the time after stipulating the deli operate between 9 a.m
and that there be “no grilling” on premises
Others still would like to see Angelo’s relocate entirely
McKenzie hopes the tenor of this week’s meeting
which Kelsen and an Angelo’s representative will attend
“I just want to get the problems out there — which I think we know — and then get solutions to that.”
clusters of people lingered on every corner of Ninth and Fitzwater
with several tucking into cheesesteaks from a perch on the concrete curb at the base of Palumbo’s chain-link fence
The four trash cans by Angelo’s — three around the southwest corner
one on the southeast — had plenty of room left
Fitzwater was closed to traffic west of Ninth as an 18-wheeler stopped to unload food deliveries to the pizzeria
A postman who’s been working this beat for 22 years paused on his route to comment
there was a gaggle of young women eating on the steps of the rowhouse two doors down from Angelo’s
a couple ate pizza out of their trunk as two college-age kids stashed 30 sandwiches in a cooler in the back of their car
The scene is “kind of iconic,” grants Desyatnik
“People in their sports gear just standing around
eating off their hoods — there’s something to it
“We’re proud of our neighborhood being featured in the national food scene,” he said
We just have to make it work for everybody.”

representing Bella Vista College Preparatory in Phoenix
competes in the most challenging high school basketball league in the country
Not only do they play in the most demanding league
The Nike EYBL Scholastic League runs 14 teams deep with nine of them ranked in ESPN’s latest top-25 rankings
The league has 60 alumni actively playing in the NBA
is the top team in Arizona and the Bears are in first place in the Scholastic League
They hold an 8-1 record going into the final two games of regular season play
“We went from literally no one even talking about us for four months to all the way to number six in ESPN,” assistant coach August Mendes said
In a league boasting several five-star prospects
the Bears flew under the radar entering league play and were not ranked in ESPN’s preseason rankings in November
CIA Bella Vista is not designed like many of their opponents
which is really tough to do in a 32-minute game
it’s almost impossible to do,” coach Brandon Rosenthal said
“Especially when you’re working with high-profile guys
guys that not only have aspirations of playing high major (college basketball) but also professional basketball.”

has been instrumental in the team’s success in Rosenthal’s first season leading the program
Rosenthal’s previous coaching stops include stints with the Phoenix Suns
Arizona State and the Santa Cruz Warriors (Golden State Warriors’ G League affiliate)
and they’re tired in the third quarter and fourth quarter,” senior Aginaldo Neto said
“So we just go in in the second half and put our foot on the gas.”
The nine-man rotation creates a balanced offensive attack as only one Bear averages double-figures
Point guard Miles Sadler leads the team with 16.4 points per game
second in the league behind five-star Darius Acuff Jr.
who plays for IMG Academy and averages 25.2 points per game
“I just think our whole team really bought in,” senior forward Jaion Pitt said
Cameroon native Lucas Toukam soars for a dunk during CIA Bella Vista practice, showcasing the international talent fueling the team’s success. (Photo by Anthony Chiu/Cronkite News)
Another unique characteristic of CIA Bella Vista is that all nine players are international
representing four countries: Canada (six players)
Cameroon (one player) and Senegal (one player)
Bella Vista College Preparatory has seven teams
and approximately 25 countries are represented across those teams
“I think that’s contributed a little bit to our success because nothing’s been handed to us,” Rosenthal said
to break in and get some of the acknowledgment and create some of the opportunities that they need for themselves
they’ve got to go from completely unknown to performing at the highest level.”
The players reside in several different team houses
“We’ve got guys that have been here (in the United States) since eighth or ninth grade,” Rosenthal said
“So just to make that level of commitment and then go through that whole process together collectively is part of the reason why we’re having so much success right now.”
“I’ve grown a lot as a player and as a person off the court since I’ve been here,” Goode said
He’s been able to turn to teammates for guidance
Everyone has been through the same transition and adjustment
“I teach the young guys because I’ve had a lot of experience,” Neto said
so I bring more experience than anything.”
The blossoming chemistry off-court between the players translates to the gym
with just two regular-season games remaining
CIA Bella Vista is in position to compete for a Scholastic League Championship

The Bears will put a bow on the regular season this weekend with contests against Wasatch Academy (UT) on Saturday and Veritas Academy (CA) on Sunday
Both games will take place at The Bishop’s School in San Diego
and you pretty much have to have a spotless record.”
Only eight teams in the country are selected for the Chipotle Nationals
Last season the winner was Montverde Academy (Florida)
and now every player from their starting five last season is averaging double-digits at the Division I level
CIA Bella Vista is in a position to earn a spot in Chipotle Nationals
One more loss could be the difference between a coveted spot
we’re playing for a championship,” Rosenthal said

If you’re ever (somehow) still hungry after shopping in the Italian Market or want an edible reward for finding a parking spot in South Philly, the restaurants of Bella Vista are here for you. The area is home to some of Philly's most iconic places to eat, whether you want incredible Cambodian skewers, a cheesesteak worth waiting for (despite the swarm of suburban Flyers fans who don't know how Angelo's ordering system works), or the best water ice in town.

This husband-and-wife-run Bella Vista shop has regulars doing two-a-days (and it's only open from 9am to 1pm)
hand-sized buns topped with sugary icing or blueberry compote for breakfast
and stop back in for an egg or sausage gravy-filled kolache for an afternoon snack
There’s only a window out front where you order from
so bring a chair and plan to stock up for the week

Italian
Bella Vista
While Italian sandwiches and pastries are about as common in Bella Vista as shoppers lugging two-wheeled carts
this new all-day cafe stands out for its panzerotti—including a very good breakfast version with scrambled egg and melty cooper sharp
formerly a pop-up series and now a brick-and-mortar on 8th Street
By that we mean a place to eat chicken cutlet sandwiches
and watch as our productivity levels lose the battle against puffy
Cambodian
If you hear someone complaining about being bored of their restaurant routine in Philly these days
This BYOB Cambodian noodle house only has 10 or so tables inside
so while you can walk in without a reservation
Mawn serves unforgettable Southeast Asian dishes
you can always try to walk in with a few strangers

Italian Market
Blue Corn is one of the first places we send people for margaritas and tacos in Philly
tiny restaurant is made on site—from the two salsas that appear on every table
to the corn tortillas used for their tacos
And while you might find al pastor tacos and ceviche on lots of menus in Philly
Blue Corn does the basics better than almost anyone else
Bring cash or plan on using the ATM inside
PlayUnmute8.4FiorellaPasta
This tiny pasta bar from the Vetri team is, in fact, as good as you've heard. And also very hard to get into
If you snag one of the few bar seats inside
you’ll get a view of the cooks making ricotta gnocchi
Bring some out-of-towners here if you want to impress them while simultaneously ruining all other ravioli they've ever eaten
How to get into FiorellaDon’t let the vintage fixtures fool you—it’s not the old days when slipping a 20 to a server translates to a seat
they open up reservations 30 days in advance while bar seats are held for walk-ins when available
Securing a walk-in spot might be as rare as winning Wonka’s golden ticket
but it’s worth the attempt (otherwise take a 4pm reservation
which is the only time they occasionally have open)

A communal beer fridge if you forget to BYOB
A caesar salad variation we can only describe as "bangin." This is what you're in for when you come to eat Filipino food at Tabachoy
The space is small and usually quite booked
Make a reservation beforehand and follow your nose (or just our advice) to dishes like unbreaded fried chicken with a soy vinegar sauce

If you make the best cheesesteak in Philly (and some of the best pizza)
The cash-only South Philly spot is the only place you should go to when you can’t choose between the ribeye cheesesteak on crackly seeded rolls (that they bake in-house) or a classic margherita pizza with the creamiest fior di latte in the city
If you survive the line at this takeout-only spot
How to get into Angelo’s PizzeriaWe suggest treating a trip to Angelo’s like an Eagles tailgate—get there super early
PlayUnmute8.3Paesano'sSandwiches
Paesano's on 9th Street gets less attention than the famous
old-school Italian restaurants in the neighborhood
But we find their food—like beefy sandwiches

Come for a casual sit-down lunch and watch someone sniff a melon like it's a scented candle through the windows

This neighborhood French spot works just as well for a casual Friday night dinner with friends as it does for a first date on a weeknight
But it just feels good to sit in the dim-lit room and forget about your 40 unread text messages
That's why you'll keep coming back

so just stick to the noodles the next time you're near the Italian Market looking for something warm
feel more like tourist traps than they do old-school Italian hangouts
and you’ll see pictures of families hung up on the walls and tables of regulars who’ve been eating veal parm here since it opened in the ’60s
The menu is long and has everything you’d expect from a red-sauce joint
including their famous (and genuinely good) meatballs in gravy

stick to the Italian specialties like the linguine pescatore with jumbo shrimp and a buttery lobster francaise

you'll eat candlelit tandoori shrimp and chicken curry on a white tablecloth next to golden Patachitra paintings

according to a news release from city spokeswoman Cassi Lapp
— KRCR received footage from inside the Halloween party in Bella Vista that ended in six people shot
We advise the footage may be disturbing for some
the video we’re showing sheds some light on the chaotic events investigators are currently working through
As the video starts there is already blood on the ground
Sources who would like to remain anonymous for safety have claimed there was a fight preceding the shooting
but it is not clear if this video was taken then or after some shots were fired
when we freeze the video it looks like the young man in gray pushing through the crowd had what looks like a gun in his hand
It is not clear whether this person is one of the shooters or one of the people shot

It was meant to be: Sam Mink and Anthony Padilla didn’t want to leave their neighborhood
The couple also didn’t want to leave their home — a historic loft with a 16-foot ceiling that happens to be where Tom Hanks’s character lived in the movie Philadelphia
But with only two bedrooms and a growing son (now age 10)
she embarked on a total rebuild that thoughtfully combined the two lofts
(Moving the staircase was one of the complex changes.)

The must: Preserve the building’s original 19th-century cigar factory details

– Construction just kicked off for the new Bella Vista development in Santa Barbara
"A lot involved … having building permits then getting funding together … this is over a 50 million dollar project," said Rob Fredericks of the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara
