dreary D3 regional final in Springfield (Press Pros Feature Photos by Brian Bayless) While boasting a highly successful program through the years windy conditions captured its first regional championship in 30 years earning a state semifinal date with top-ranked Watterson OH – Still having something to play for during Thanksgiving week has long been considered a rite of passage for programs experiencing exceptional seasons but the only previous time that’s happened for London during the playoff era was in 1994 That the Red Raiders were enjoying one of their greatest seasons was not in question even before they took the field against third-seeded Bellbrook for the Division III but their performance Friday at Springfield brought them to new heights In what was its first appearance in a regional final since 2018 fourth-seeded London handled the rainy and cold conditions better than the Golden Eagles and posted a 13-0 victory that earned the program its first regional title in 30 years Veteran central Ohio columnist Jarrod Ulrey writes the OCC and sports at large for Press Pros The Red Raiders will face top-ranked Watterson next Friday in a state semifinal matching teams with unblemished 14-0 teams The Eagles were the state runner-up a year ago football on Thanksgiving – that’s fun,” London coach Kyle Cutler said whether it was the weather or the play on the field We found a way to make plays when we needed to make them and that’s what championship football is all about.”  but it was clear from its opening drive when it was stopped for no gain twice and for (minus)-1 yard that its offense might be in for its biggest challenge to date Logan Services sponsors the best area sports stories on Press Pros the Red Raiders were more than up to the task limiting Bellbrook in the first half to just 15 plays and 21 total yards Noah Sollars draws first blood for the Red Raiders twisting and turning his way into the end zone and they swarmed to the ball,” said Bellbrook coach Jeff Jenkins “We put a couple nice little drives together but we kind of killed ourselves with penalties or mistakes and got behind the chains We’re not a real good offense when we’re playing from third-and-12 We knew this was going to be kind of a slugfest with a heavy run game We felt like we could have done quite a bit better and we’re disappointed in the outcome tonight they’re well-deserving of being the regional champs.”  The Red Raiders took advantage of a short field for their first points After forcing Bellbrook into a fourth-and-11 from its own 1 on its opening drive London got the ball back at the Golden Eagles’ 28 with 7 minutes Although the Red Raiders attempted just two passes all game senior quarterback Chris Mason found junior Steven Gravely Press Pros Magazine.com The Red Raiders held the ball for the final 5:25 of the first half putting together a 10-play drive that began at their own 32 but Gravely didn’t get out of bounds in time on a 10-yard run that moved his team to the Bellbrook 15 on the final play of the first half as the clock ran out “We had to play London defense,” Cutler said and you’ve got to be able to stop the run and stop the pass The weather we knew would have an effect on some of those plays and that third quarter was a big quarter as much as that wind was roaring We knew if we could get through the third quarter that we’d be in good position.” London put together the game’s other scoring drive early in the fourth quarter senior all-purpose standout June Turner broke for a 43-yard run Turner ran in from 10 yards for the game’s final points A clearly missed facemask call early in the game set the tone for what would become a chippy a first-team all-district defensive back and a three-year two-way starter and it was there (on the 43-yard run),” Turner said “It’s a lot of responsibility (to be a team leader on both sides of the ball) but I know I can handle it and I know my teammates trust me and the coaches trust me and probably the toughest team we played all year A lot of people doubted us at the beginning of the year and told us we couldn’t do it and it’s going to be a good (game next week).”  a first-team all-district running back and a four-year starter contributed 18 rushes for 53 yards while Gravely added 35 yards on nine carries Bellbrook moved from its own 20 to the London 22 on its final possession but Gravely intercepted a pass from quarterback Aidan Caswell to seal the victory with four minutes remaining The Golden Eagles were held to 79 yards of offense London’s Ladainan McNeal attempts to bring down Aidan Caswell during a 13-0 regional final game  “We knew since the summer what kind of team we had and we just never quit and played as a team We could have obviously performed better (offensively) The Watterson-London matchup guarantees that a team from the Central District will advance to the state championship game for the third consecutive season Bloom-Carroll lost in the 2022 final and Watterson fell 27-7 to Toledo Central Catholic in last year’s title contest Youngstown Ursuline and Toledo Central Catholic are a pair of 13-1 teams meeting in the other state semifinal “We’ve got great players and great senior leadership,” Cutler said “June Turner is a standout who made tremendous plays for us we’ve got a lot of guys we can get the ball to we’ll pull the trigger and make things happen but they play the best together of any team we’ve had.” contact Weedman USA at 614-733-3747 or go online to Weedman.com © PressProsMagazine.com, All Tipp’s defense suffocated Bellbrook from first to final snap Sophomore QB Larkin Thomas threw two touchdowns and rushed for a third Tipp City — Change can resurrect a football program but it doesn’t look like much has changed at all Eighteen new starters took the field for the Red Devils against Bellbrook but they picked up right where last year’s squad left off but the 11 new defensive starters overpowered the Golden Eagles Three TDs from sophomore QB Larkin Thomas plus a scoop and score made for a 28-7 week one victory The Arbogast family of dealerships sponsors your favorite central Ohio sports on Press Pros After the welcome sound of a boot on a football for the first time this fall It didn’t play the role of an inexperienced unit convincingly The fierce front seven forced a three-and-out on the first drive including a sack on 3rd-and-long by Collin Isaac on a blitz that hit before Bellbrook QB Aiden Caswell had time to catch the snap and check his first read the Red Devils gave their first four touches to four different players including two screen passes to make their young QB comfortable But Thomas showed he can do more than dink and dunk who plowed through three defenders for the season’s inaugural score “That’s a very good defense and we’ve struggled the last few years with running the football,” Tipp Head Coach Matt Burgbacher said “So we wanted to spread them out and get some easy throws Tipp QB Larkin Thomas started the season strong “We knew we had to start off strong,” Thomas said “And it really started with our run game and our offensive line pushing us forward Then everyone came together and made the right reads.” The Tipp defense didn’t change course in the slightest forcing two more consecutive three-and-outs against the Golden Eagles run-heavy Wing-T offense Bellbrook had no answer for Tipp’s front seven which ravaged the offensive line all night The run game struggled to create manageable third downs and the Red Devils tallied four sacks in obvious passing situations Koverman-Staley-Dickerson Insurance proudly sponsors high school football on Press Pros it was really just the trust between all of us,” senior linebacker Carson Hughes said “We had to trust each other to do the right things “we” and “us” are words spoken often by Tippecanoe athletes during interviews Xavier Melton looked the part of the reliable running back the Red Devils have used to augment their passing game in previous seasons “We’ve got people from all grades playing this season,” Hughes said “We’re so connected and ready to pick each other up Herndon scooped it up and took it to the house for his second TD atoning for an interception Thomas threw into double coverage on the preceding drive Thomas’ pros and cons were on full display as Tipp didn’t pull any punches who threw for 1,900 yards before graduating last year He placed the ball well from the pocket and on the run breaking it for 40 yards down to the 1-yard line before punching it in himself on the next play finding the open receiver and delivering the ball on time he dropped a dime to wideout Jackson Davis down the right sideline for a 35-yard TD Thomas made some mistakes you might expect a sophomore to make He forced a few ill-advised balls into the seam He threw a second interception on an RPO where he held onto the football for an extra beat and probably should’ve just handed it to the Logan Butera Will Strong got free for this deep connection to fuel the Tipp getaway “The most challenging thing was bouncing back and responding to our misreads and slight mistakes,” Thomas said But it didn’t feel like one mistake led to another more like a group of inexperienced players making a few disconnected mental mistakes “The great thing about Larkin is he’s so coachable,” Burgbacher said “He’s gonna learn and he’s not gonna make that mistake again.” It’s a good thing he’s willing to learn because soon those can’t be easily brushed off as rookie mistakes But for an underclassman with one pass and two rushing attempts to his name it’s fair to give him a week to make a few mistakes Especially considering he’s not working with a veteran crew of skill position players Nearly three-fourths of Tipp’s offensive production from 2023 crossed the graduation stage in May Thomas dropped a snap he didn’t seem to be anticipating and Vincent Epifano found the end zone on a two-play eight-yard scoring drive a score that held for the final 9:56 of the game On the occasions where Bellbrook did find an offensive rhythm usually through a chunk play on the ground reflected by the Eagles’ picking up first downs on two of seven possessions in the first half A holding penalty and a chop block curtailed both drives and committed unsportsmanlike conduct afterward but we still got a lot of things to improve on,” Burgbacher said but these kids did grow up tonight real quick.” Tipp may have a couple of weeks to keep growing up and iron out the wrinkles in their offense the Red Devils look pretty good in those matchups But that’s the joy of week one of high school football He was preceded in death by his parents.  Sam
