He told deputies he was in his bedroom when the suspect forced his way into his apartment in the 8500 block of Artesia Boulevard on Tuesday evening. The gunman first went into the son’s bedroom and shot him before heading into his ex-girlfriend’s bedroom, the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. As the son was escaping from the apartment he heard his mother scream and then a gunshot, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Deputies arrived on the scene around 11:30 p.m. and found the son outside wounded in the hip. They carried the man from the sidewalk to a police vehicle, according to video footage from OnSceneTV, and he was treated by paramedics. While deputies were outside the apartment, they heard another gunshot and rushed inside. There, authorities found the 54-year-old woman fatally shot in the head and her ex-boyfriend dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. The wounded son was transported to a hospital and was stable, according to authorities. The woman was identified as Tamica Gant Lawrence by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner on Thursday. On Wednesday afternoon, the stucco apartment building remained an active crime scene with part of Artesia Boulevard closed with yellow police tape. Homicide detectives remained on the scene for more than 12 hours after the shooting and declined to comment. “We didn’t hear anything, just the helicopters,” said a neighbor who declined to give their name. “But it’s sad to hear that someone would do that.” Neither the shooter nor his victims were identified. Lawrence had filed paperwork seeking a restraining order earlier in the day at the Whittier Courthouse to protect herself and her son from the suspect, sheriff’s officials said. The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident can call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Powered by Nutmeg Case Western Reserve University’s proposed Humanities Building on Bellflower Road is shown to satisfy Cleveland Planning Commission requirements to win permission for demolishing a vacant house in University Circle (CWRU) Cleveland City Planning Commission today approved a conceptual design for Case Western Reserve University’s new Humanities Building and to demolish an abandoned fraternity house at 11333 Bellflower Rd Most of the rest of the roughly 1.6-acre site in University Circle is used as a parking lot the former Delta Sigma Delta fraternity house property will be used as an interim parking lot until the university can raise tens of millions of dollars to construct the Humanities Building As proposed in CWRU’s 10-year campus master plan the new building would consolidate CWRU’s humanities programs from six sites around campus into a single location CWRU bought the fraternity house in 2022 for $340,000 from Lambda Chapter Corp. the planning commission denied the university’s request to demolish the house citing the lack of a plan for reusing the site for anything more than a surface parking lot was sufficient to win approval this time around The vacant house is not historical or a local landmark There is no economic viability for rehabilitation as the structure has minimal square footage and no need for thistype of housing space to overcome major costs to bring the building up to code Proposed location of Case Western Reserve University’s new Humanities Building on Bellflower Road (CWRU) “We’re looking at a 100,000 to 150,000-square-foot building based on need,” Bruder said He was hired by CWRU at the end of 2023 and served as executive director of facilities planning and design at Kent State University from 1999-2020 where he oversaw multiple “Space for our humanities programs are a high priority for us due to increasing enrollment and student needs,” Bruder added “CWRU is committed to the overall humanities project but we are in the very early stages of development CWRU has invested over $100,000 in programmatic and conceptual design for a humanities building on this site.” Preliminary plans also show the building could be built atop an underground parking garage for approximately 150 cars That’s 50 percent more than the roughly 100 spaces total among the two existing surface parking lots on the site School parking will be used mostly during the day with parking for L’Albatross and Denny’s in the evenings About 10 surface parking spaces could be offered on the western side of the new school building The former Delta Sigma Delta fraternity house at 11333 Bellflower Road was purchased and boarded up by Case Western Reserve University The building sits across the street from the university’s admissions’ office giving new students and their families a bad first impression the commission first approved the conceptual plans for the Humanities Building which could not be built with the house still standing So it would have been awkward if the commission had voted next to oppose the house’s demolition buoyed no doubt by letters submitted to the commission by two Cleveland City Council members who serve the area “The property is adjacent to Ward 6 and sits directly across the street from the CWRU Admissions office,” said City Council President Blaine Griffin of Ward 6 in his letter “Having a vacant building in poor condition directly across the street from where prospective students and parents have their first encounter with the university does not send a good first impression We want to be supportive of the university’s efforts to recruit the best and brightest to Cleveland and having that building there does not help with that goal.” He also expressed support for CWRU’s intentions to construct a new building to house its humanities program The original location that was considered for this building was at the park-like green space known as East Bell Commons across the street from the Cleveland Art Museum A preliminary site plan for the proposed Humanities Building (CWRU) to maintain that space as a green space and to instead build where the vacant (fraternity house) building sits,” Griffin wrote “I have had the opportunity to see the (fraternity house) building up close and it is in terrible condition,” wrote Ward 9 Councilman Kevin Conwell “One of my primary concerns as a councilman is for the safety and well-being of my constituents pose a significant safety risk to the neighborhood.” “I’d like to kindly request that you don’t approve demolition of this grand home in the former Wade Park Allotment for a surface parking lot,” wrote Laura Cyrocki president of the Hessler Neighborhood Association to the commission “We’ve seen too many examples of demolition with intentions to develop result in surface parking lots which remain parking lots for decades.” View of a massing for the proposed Humanities Building from the Nash Walkway L’Albatross Restaurant is seen at right A massing is intended only to show the potential scale of a new structure based on space needs “It is my understanding that Case is planning to build on this site in the near future,” Conwell said I would much rather (see) the building be razed now instead of waiting until they are ready to build the new building There is no sense in having another building sit vacant unnecessarily.” for the city to remove on-street parking near the intersection of Bellflower and Hessler Court which is right in front of the vacant fraternity house leaving Hessler Court onto Bellflower is treacherous for both pedestrians crossing Hessler Court and for drivers,” she said “Cars parked on the south side of Bellflower coupled with the abundant pedestrian traffic between students’ classes makes this intersection very dangerous.” The future of our Website depends on revenue from our readers in response to a reported possible kidnapping.  Witnesses reported seeing an unidentified female adult / City of Bellflower wants to rezone Hollywood Sports Park - a golf course turned paintball course - into housing. One problem: it's already being targeted as the new maintenance and storage facility for Metro's recently-approved Southeast Gateway Line The 22-acre property at 9030 Somerset Boulevard sits directly north of the Southeast Gateway Line's right-of-way.  The rail line's final environmental impact report shows that the property would be improved with tracks for vehicle storage While no current project is imagined for the site, it is currently zoned for open space by the City of Bellflower. The city intends to update the zoning for the property to permit housing on the site, a change which will go toward an amendment to Bellflower's already-approved 2021-2029 Housing Element The notice of preparation states that 20.5 acres of the site could be developed with housing at a rate of 100 residential units per acre with the remaining 1.5 acres left over to open space After accounting for features such as parking the city expects that the site could accommodate up to 1,640 homes Bellflower's Director of Planning Elizabeth C Oba said that Metro has engaged in discussions about acquiring the property for several years but has yet to make a formal offer to acquire the land the Bellflower City Council  approved a resolution which if Metro were to move forward with acquiring the facility would demand that the agency to prioritize Bellflower residents in hiring for the new facility set aside 1.5 acres of the site as public open space and compensate or relocate the site's existing leaseholder "Whether Metro proceeds with its planned use or not is not within the City’s control," said Oba "What is within our control is how we plan for the future of our community.  Our focus has been and continues to be on meeting the needs of Bellflower residents now and for many years to come." Utility relocation and other advance work on the Southeast Gateway Line is expected to begin later this year Twitter / Facebook / LinkedIn / Threads / Instagram This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. between Mediterranean history and the future of climate change globally “When you understand what happened in the past you are way more prepared to understand what may be coming to you in the future,” she said The Florida Museum, along with Southern Illinois University and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, received a grant of over $1 million from the U.S National Science Foundation to launch an uncommon collaboration between archaeologists Researchers will study the impact of Mediterranean human activity on the evolution and distribution of Campanulaceae a scientific family of approximately 2,400 bellflower species which officially began June 1 with an estimated completion date in 2028 will also offer student research opportunities.  The Mediterranean Basin, home to approximately 10% of known plant species, is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, according to the National Library of Medicine a Florida Museum researcher and project co-principal investigator said it’s also one of the most altered due to human pressure “We’re attempting to understand how human activity has shaped the distribution of the species on islands specifically and … predict how climate change will alter the landscape of this region in the future,” he said Project investigators from various fields will spend time traveling the region annually to gather diverse clippings of Campanulaceae who specializes in Mediterranean plant evolution a Florida Museum herbarium and informatics curator and the project’s principal investigator has a long history of studying Campanulaceae She said the bellflower DNA can remain intact for decades when collected and pressed correctly The clippings are transported back to Dickinson Hall’s herbarium carefully wrapped in newspapers before they can be oven-dried and labeled Marked as “Plants of Greece” and “Plants of Portugal,” bellflower samples ranging from tiny buds to stems over a foot long were secured to individual papers with tape and filed into folders and that means they have a narrow distribution in sometimes one island or two,” she said which we don’t understand whether that is a product of climate change or maybe really strong human influence.” Cellinese said boiling the flowers will “bring them back to life,” allowing for DNA extraction analyses run in a molecular lab In tandem with the lab’s long tables and beakers hung to dry on one wall on another was a colorful array of personal mugs The Mediterranean Basin is one of five regions in the Mediterranean biome Cellinese said studying bellflower evolution and distribution within the basin could shape predictions for the survival of related gene pools worldwide “Understanding what happens in the Mediterranean region might actually help us a lot to understand what has happened or may happen in this other corner of the planet that has the same kind of climate,” she said The project is currently in search graduate students who will assist with sample collection and DNA extraction beginning in Fall 2025 a Southern Illinois University assistant professor and project co-principal investigator is a plant evolutionary ecologist studying Triodanis She said drawing connections to Triodanis’ close relatives in the Mediterranean could bridge the gap to less documented species “We have found that climate change is inducing earlier flower times in Triodanis but we know almost nothing about those similar anthropogenic changes in related claves in the Mediterranean,” Weber said she said it’s too soon to determine the patterns between Triodanis and Campanulaceae diversity especially in relation to global climate change a Florida Museum artificial intelligence assistant curator and project co-investigator While human influence on domesticated animals and agricultural species is known to be direct he said inadvertent impacts by humanity on their environment “We don’t think as much about their extensive impact on the ecosystems around them,” he said Through research based completely in technology Gauthier said he will draw correlations between bellflower genetic information and climate predictors along with material evidence of human inhabitation of islands within the Mediterranean Basin “The idea is to better contextualize the nature of human impacts,” he said “We can understand how these species are distributed based on where humans might have destroyed the environment or otherwise influenced where they can go.” The collaboration of specializations ranging from botany to evolutionary biology to anthropology in pursuit of a single goal is uncommon which Gauthier said will give their findings a multi-disciplinary perspective these fields don’t really talk to one another,” he said “They don’t think about the different theories or hypotheses generated from those different streams of data.”
