The competitive bond between Bellmore JFK sophomore baseball stars and identical twins Derek and Ryan Yormack is as healthy as ever
Said coach Mike Gattus: “That's incredible
they wanted to have live at-bats against each other
Duke commits in their third varsity season
have helped transform a Bellmore JFK program in search of its first county title
12-0) have already clinched their second consecutive outright Nassau Conference AA-III title
and the Yormacks have been at the forefront of the success
“It’s something I really don't take for granted at any moment,” Gattus said
it's hard to put into words sometimes
and I don't take a second of it for granted
On top of the talent and how hard they work and the success and the numbers
Ryan owns a .577/.636/1.173 slash line in 52 at-bats and 66 plate appearances
Derek is slashing .528/.606/.962 in 53 at-bats and 66 plate appearances
Derek is 5-0 with 45 strikeouts and has allowed zero earned runs in 25 2/3 innings (six starts)
He has a 0.584 WHIP and batters hit 0.049 against him
He painted a masterpiece on April 24: a 17-strikeout no-hitter in a 6-0 win over Long Beach
I was just trying to block it all out and just finish the job.”
Derek hit .384 with a 1.025 OPS and 28 RBIs
and he had three wins and struck out 67 in 35 innings
Ryan batted .456 with a 1.506 OPS and had 15 extra-base hits
Scouts have started flocking to Cougars games
a curveball that tops out at 80 and a slider that sits just over 80
“There's starting to become a little presence of people coming down to watch them
“I said at our end-of-the-season dinner last year
they've changed the trajectory of our program because they brought such great exposure to everything that we have going on here
and they've elevated the level of play
They make everyone else around them better
and people are now starting to take notice.”
The increased attention comes with inherent pressure
But the maturity and ability to handle it has impressed Gattus and many others
“I’ve played with [Derek] since I was 12 years old,” junior catcher Derek Fong said
He’s very mature and really handles his business well.”
The Cougars fell short in the Nassau Class AA title last year
losing the first two games of a best-of-three championship series against Division
They have their sights on huge goals this spring
“We're all trying to make the next step
We want the — we don't even want the county championship
The brothers still have the rest of this season and two more to solidify their legacy
Ryan is already the program’s all-time home runs leader with 18
“The numbers that they're going to leave and the impact on the field is phenomenal,” Gattus said
“But I think the legacy that they're going to leave is going to be two great student-athletes and two phenomenal kids that have elevated the level of our program through their hard work and commitment
For them to be here for now three years has been phenomenal for our program entirely
“The legacy that they leave is going to be for years to come.”

“It’s very special,” an emotional coach Patrick Braglia said
“We’ve been together pretty much three years now
To get to this point and win it the way that we did and how we’ve won all year
“We’ve experienced a lot of losses together,” Lucchi said
“It makes winning this so much more special
We really deserve it and have put in the work for it.”

Anthony Cutalo found the net 1:30 into the third period and Joseph Rocca tied it at 2 with 2:35 left in regulation
“It’s always important to get on the board first,” Braglia said
“We kind of got away from our game for a little bit
and that’s what let them back in to tie it.”

NY — Elmont High School will continue playing sports against teams from Bellmore and Merrick
Sewanhaka Central Superintendent Regina Agrusa said Tuesday night at a board meeting
The decision comes after parents lodged complaints about what some deemed racist behavior and harassment at games in the past few years
Agrusa said she became aware of the problem at a town hall meeting last month
The administrator also spoke to members of the faculty
along with leaders from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District to fully address the community's concerns
"'[The district] does not and will not tolerate any form of hate toward our students
The superintendent added: "Measures will be taken to accompany our student athletes to away games to ensure that the competitions are safe for all participants" and that the code of conduct is equally enforced for all students
Those measures will not cause the rescheduling of any games for Sewanhaka Central High School District against Bellmore
Merrick or any other teams across Nassau County this season
"While I realize that not all people may be in favor
I do believe that this decision is in the best interest of our student athletes at this time," Agrusa said
She remains confident that with "intentional dialogue and education," players will have competitive sports "that do not include hate and harm."
Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District administration building
Sewanhaka Central High School District officials are weighing a request from some Elmont parents to remove Bellmore-Merrick from the high school's sports schedule
after years of complaints about racial harassment at games
The topic is expected to come up at the next meeting of the Sewanhaka school board
March 25 at Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park
Sewanhaka schools Superintendent Regina Agrusa in a statement Tuesday acknowledged the parents' concerns but said “the district is also aware that many Elmont parents and student-athletes wish to continue these games
the district is carefully reviewing all options in the best interest of our student-athletes before making any formal recommendations about the future game schedule.”
The parents’ request came after an incident during a girls varsity basketball game in Bellmore last month
when two players from opposing teams tussled over the ball
the governing body for school sports in Nassau County
However, some Elmont parents said in interviews with Newsday that it followed numerous games at which their children have been subjected to racist behavior
The Sewanhaka district includes five high schools in Elmont
The Bellmore-Merrick district includes three high schools in Bellmore and Merrick
Its high schools’ population ranges from 3% to 4% Black
Bellmore-Merrick school leaders and athletic officials say a limited number of spectators have engaged in racist behavior in recent years
and they have been removed from the stands and disciplined whenever officials became aware of the conduct
superintendent of the Bellmore-Merrick district
said in a statement that the district has “extended our deepest apologies and held ourselves accountable for unfortunate behaviors that have occurred in the past with Elmont Memorial High School.”
“We continue to have ongoing conversations with the Sewanhaka Central High School District and Section VIII and remain committed to fostering an environment that is supportive and respectful of all.”
president of the Elmont PTSA Dad’s Club and father of three Elmont Memorial graduates
“We can't just keep putting our kids at risk
Why not get ahead of this before something major happens and then we’ve got YouTube videos showing a melee?”
Johnson said numerous parents spoke at a public meeting with district and athletic officials this month
asking for Bellmore-Merrick to be removed from Elmont teams’ schedule this fall
“There’s nothing else that we have identified at this time as being a fix … The other measures we’ve attempted haven’t worked," he said
The recent incident that prompted calls to remove Bellmore-Merrick from Elmont's sports schedule “had nothing to do with race,” said Patrick Pizzarelli
executive director of Section VIII Athletics
An Elmont player who is Black was removed and suspended for two future games after a dispute with a white player from Bellmore
A video later showed that the Bellmore player hit the Elmont player and either pulled her hair or got tangled in it
after which the Elmont player punched back
the Elmont player’s suspension was lifted after one game and the Bellmore-Merrick district suspended its own player for two games
Two earlier incidents in 2021 and 2023 “were racial
and we have zero tolerance for any of that stuff,” Pizzarelli said
both by the Bellmore-Merrick school district and Section VIII.”
Not all parents support the request for a break from games with Bellmore-Merrick
school officials should “find the culprit and suspend them” or impose another penalty
whose son has played basketball for three years at Elmont and whose two daughters also played sports for the school
“It's not everybody that is responsible for those actions.”
But some Elmont parents said there has been a pattern for years of racial harassment by Bellmore-Merrick community members
many of which don’t get reported because the players don’t want to risk their shot at college scholarships
“They tell their parents but they don’t tell the officials,” said Sheldon Meikle
board member of the Elmont Spartan Club booster organization and former member of the Elmont Union Free School District’s school board
immediate past president of the Elmont High School PTSA and a trustee on the Elmont board of education
said parents “want to see meaningful impact
Some Elmont parents want to remove Bellmore-Merrick from the high school's sports schedule
The request was prompted by the suspension of an Elmont girls varsity basketball player after a dispute with a white player from Bellmore
A video later showed that the Bellmore player hit the Elmont girl
Bellmore-Merrick school leaders and athletic officials say a limited number of spectators have engaged in racist behavior in the past
and the issue has been addressed when officials became aware of the conduct

NY — Bellcrest Kosher Deli has been frozen in time since closing more than a decade ago in Bellmore
a new restaurant is ready to take over the space as a proof of concept for future franchisees
"Roberto Chang" offers modern Latin and Asian street food
It's the first restaurant for businessman Paul Cicchetti of Port Washington
although he tested "Roberto Chang" at Westbury's Samanea Mall during COVID
We don't have dishes," Cicchetti told Patch
What they will have is easy-to-eat foods while on the move
As for why he selected the long-dormant spot on Merrick Road
Cicchetti said the community is primed for his unique menu
There's all kinds of businesses there," he said
Perhaps the most important business there is next-door neighbor Brokerage Comedy Club and owner James Dolce
Cicchetti hopes to get plenty of foot traffic throughout the day
They plan to have hours of operation from 7:30 a.m
You'll also find a dessert menu and more than a dozen coffee bar choices
"It's stuff you can't get everywhere," Cicchetti said
who is excited about the "Roberto Chang" product
"This is going to be our pilot location to see how it works," he said
Cicchetti is already anticipating the proliferation of "Roberto Chang." He expects a clearer picture of the restaurant's future within eight months
"All our food comes in prepared off-site."
The uniqueness of "Roberto Chang" goes beyond the food
you're going to be engrossed in a music video," he said
"You're not going to pay so much attention to the time anymore."
If the health department signs off this week
Cicchetti will have "Roberto Chang" ready to open on Monday for a soft launch
Roberto Chang owner Paul Cicchetti hopes diners come for the adventerous and healthier food — and just maybe
a couple will feel inspired to open their own franchise
explained that he came up with the concept for his Latin and Asian modern street food restaurant in Bellmore about seven years ago.
“‘Roberto Chang’ started as a man from the Bronx
and would play music while selling his cuisine on street corners,” said Cicchetti
before hosting a grand opening event in March.
Don’t expect to see Roberto Chang hanging out at the restaurant
Cicchetti noted that Chang is “a fictitious character
was to create a Latin and Asian story that delivered equal focus on both cuisines
While the Roberto Chang story may be made up
the concept is loosely based on some of Cicchetti’s life experiences growing up in New York
research points to both Latin and Asian populations as being among the fastest-growing demographics in the country
Roberto Chang‘s interior is replete with murals of urban street scenes
coupled with vibrant urban music pumping on TVs and over the sound system
“Look at the counter and it looks like a guy setting up a street food business … a grassroots idea,” Cicchetti said
“Taking a dream and turning it into reality.”
A large part of the concept at Roberto Chang is an emphasis on healthier eating
healthy food products,” said the owner
noting that seed oils are not used in the kitchen
Cicchetti opined that “Seed oils … especially when heated … become toxic.”
The question of whether seed oils are bad for you is a debatable topic with the Cleveland Clinic noting that the relationship of seed oils and health involves a complex mix of factors
including what products the oils are used in
and whether or not the oils are being heated at very high temperatures
Roberto Chang uses commercial-grade air fryer units to prepare many grab-and-go menu items
Greater Long Island sampled a chicken empanada
already involved with several construction businesses
sees himself as more of an entrepreneur than a restaurateur
He said one of the main reasons for starting Roberto Chang was to provide young people with an affordable franchise business idea
“We want to be a healthier type of food franchise that provides opportunities for young people,” Cicchetti said
adding he already has identified some potential franchisees
He said he believes franchises are notoriously expensive and for the most part
Most franchises want prospective owners to have about $1 million in liquid cash assets to get involved
Cicchetti explained that his business model is one that doesn’t require much space and is very affordable. When asked how affordable
he said entry into his franchise can be had from an investment of $50,000 to $100,000.
who credits his bus driver father for his work ethic
considers Roberto Chang a “restaurant of the future.”
“I’m not in the restaurant business
I’m in the franchise business and we sell food,” he said
adding that he decided to embark on this venture now, “Because I’m an entrepreneur and I see opportunity
I was also a young person who became an entrepreneur
“What drives me is the potential opportunity of some high profile franchises such as Subway
Raising Cane’s and Hunt Brother’s pizza,” franchising success stories worth billions of dollars.
Cicchetti’s current goals are twofold: provide people with some healthier
fast-food alternatives and also help young entrepreneurs.
“I want to get this (Roberto Chang) to work and have people buy into it,” he said

It's all a wink to the fictional Roberto Chang character
whom owner Paul Cicchetti created after being inspired while eating empanadas at his Long Beach condo
"They were just so good and I’m eating these things and I’m like
how is it different than a hamburger or a pizza?" he asked
let me take the most popular stuff in the Latin world
and then let me blend it with some really popular foods in the Asian world
The eatery is Cicchetti’s first venture into the dining industry and he's being intentional with his choices. Cutting out the need for a large kitchen and space keeps some expenses of opening an eatery in check. A student influencer program, outlined on Roberto Chang's website
compensates those who refer other patrons with discounts and points toward free food
