A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal April 28 shooting of a 49-year-old woman in Berthoud Larimer County Sheriff's Office announced May 2 was found in a home in the 500 block of First Street around 11:20 p.m Deputies and a nearby Colorado State Patrol trooper found her while responding to a 911 call in which a caller reported a woman was shot inside her home according to a news release from the sheriff's office Despite deputies and the trooper providing first aid Several people were in the house at the time of the shooting but the sheriff's office said no one else was injured Investigators eventually identified 20-year-old Ebenezer Worku Worku was arrested May 1 and booked into the Larimer County Jail on a first-degree murder charge Worku was issued a $1.25 million cash-only bond and was listed as an inmate at the jail as of 2 p.m according to court records and the Larimer County Jail website In other news: Cyclist killed in crash west of Fort Collins was a leader in cycling community Worku is set to appear in court in Fort Collins at 8:30 a.m This case is still under investigation. The snowmobilers were partially buried but were able to self-rescue, a Colorado Avalanche Information Center report states. The avalanche center continues to warn backcountry travelers of ongoing “Since Valentine’s Day, we have documented 470 avalanches on every aspect and elevation,” the agency stated in a social media post Saturday. News | Apr 5 On Feb. 22, backcountry snowboarder Nathan Ginn triggered an avalanche on Mines Peak on Berthoud Pass that caught and killed him The Grand County coroner determined Ginn died from mechanical asphyxiation meaning that a force or object kept Ginn from breathing Ginn, 50, of Littleton was a powsurfer, meaning he rode a snowboard with no bindings. He was alone when he triggered the avalanche in an area locally known as High Trail Cliffs, according to a report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center rocky avalanche paths and is easily accessible from the Berthoud Pass parking lot Bystanders who witnessed the avalanche rushed to the scene, but an hour had passed by the time rescuers successfully excavated him, according to the report Grand County Search and Rescue transported the victim’s body back to the Berthoud Pass parking area The Colorado Avalanche Information Center wrote in the final report that “traveling alone in the backcountry is riskier than traveling with a partner or in a group” and that “challenging situations or injuries that are more easily addressed by a team can be difficult or even insurmountable for an individual.” While there is nothing “inherently wrong” with exploring the backcountry alone it is also a choice that “allows little room for error.” Recreationists are strongly encouraged by the avalanche center to learn about avalanche conditions at Avalanche.state.co.us/forecasts before heading into the backcountry News | Apr 2 Colorado Department of Transportation crews will be carrying out winter mitigation work this week on U.S which will require temporary traffic holds in both directions Temporarily holds will take place each night to ensure the safety of crew members and the public during avalanche mitigation and snow removal work Dineen said holds are expected to be brief but that “they are conditions dependent News | Sep 30 Editor’s note: This story has been edited to correct the information about where the accident occurred On the morning of Sept. 27, a head-on crash occurred on Berthoud Pass Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Grand County EMS responded to the accident the two-vehicle accident occurred near Winter Park Resort’s Mary Jane Ski Area and involved a Ram 1500 truck and BMW SUV “One vehicle had broken through the highway barrier and fell approximately 50 feet down a vertical rock wall before coming to rest another 50 feet into the forest,” Grand County Search and Rescue stated in a news release Members of East Grand Fire rappelled down the wall over the cliff to where the vehicle had landed while search and rescue members approached from below off U.S they quickly stabilized and secured the driver into a stretcher for rescue,” Grand County Search and Rescue stated which is a stretcher that can evacuate patients safely from rough terrain using materials such as ropes Another search and rescue member rappelled down the rock wall to reach the driver The rescue team employed the Pick and Pivot rope rescue technique to lift the driver back up to the road surface where they were transferred to the care of Grand County EMS for further medical treatment as well as the individuals in the other vehicle “This challenging operation highlights the expertise and coordination between local emergency services in responding to emergencies in difficult mountain terrain,” Grand County Search and Rescue stated “The rapid response and efficient teamwork of all agencies involved ensured that the patient was safely extracted and transported for necessary care.”
