The City of Big Bear is still recovering after an intense fire season
which forced resident evacuations and a halt in business
Officials with the city say they are thankful for the hardworking fire crews who helped to protect the city
"We are grateful for the swift response of our partner agencies who worked tirelessly in a collaborative effort to protect our community during the Line Fire
and we look forward to welcoming visitors back to enjoy the wonders of winter in our alpine paradise."
an influx of visitors are expected to come in droves over the next few months
Big Bear Lake is Southern California’s premier 4-season resort community
It welcomes over 1.2 million visitors per year to our picturesque city
which is just a short drive from major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles
With endless exciting outdoor recreational opportunities
and entertainment throughout the year tourists flock to the area
Local Big Bear Resort Property Specialist Holly Gardner says despite the tough fire season caused by the Line Fire
Although fire risks remain for the mountain communities
buyers understand the risk when purchasing properties in the area
and that's always going to be something that is a risk up here," said Gardner
People pretty much know when they're buying up here in the mountains that wildfires are something that could potentially be a problem
Gardner also says she works with insurance companies to make sure her clients are covered
then we know who insures up here and who will help you through the California FAIR Plan for fire insurance," explained Gardner
which is great for people looking to get a home or start a business in the area
and it's slowed down quite a bit since then," said Gardner
Gardner says the city is recovering from the fires
Like many of the business owners in Big Bear
Gardner is already looking forward to an exciting winter season
"We have a lot of new businesses in the village and a lot of thriving businesses
and that comes with our tourist season," said Gardner
"So it's great to see everybody coming up again after being shut down for the fires

Utah (KUTV) — Residents of White City are pushing back against the idea of building a civic center in Big Bear Park
City officials would like to have a building that consolidates their services
The park is an important staple for many families
and a personal favorite of Arturo Mendez’s kids
"Every time we're around the area they're like
“They feel a sense of adventure because look how big it is."
The park even brought some people like Liz Rennie to White City more than 20 years ago
“We moved here because of the park,” Rennie said
residents like Rennie are worried about a potential plan to build a civic center in the northwestern end of the park
the place where kids can run around and play and where there are sports activities,” she said
White City Mayor Paulina Flint said all the city has done so far is get bids for a feasibility study
She said in an email the building would be a "minimalist presence in the park" and "very little brick and mortar."
She said the city needs a location for emergency management meetings
and an official address to report to FEMA and the state — which is currently her home address
Rennie doesn’t think those are enough good reasons
saying they already have a building for UPD and can use the White City Water District building for everything else
Flint said their use of the water district building is "subject to an agreement that may not always be available."
Flint also said they asked the bidders for feasibility to look at purchasing property
but White City is 100% built out and there's no space
Below are the questions KUTV sent to Flint via email and her answers:
What kind of amenities would this civic center have
Or at least what are you guys hoping to have
It will have an admin office for the city administrator
meeting spaces for events and public meetings
It will give an official address to the city within the boundaries of the city
How much would it change the current layout of the park
it will be situated at the very Northwestern end of the park
On the South end of Wheeler Farm the is a new building which is used for Utah State Extension classes
This is a sample of a complimentary fit for continuing education for our residents
It has a long connecting corridor in the rear
which can display historical and local artistic talent
What made you start looking into adding it (or something else)
When the time comes for declaring a disaster event
we need location for emergency management meetings for the city
We also need space for our UPD officers to write reports and maintain a presence within the city while on duty in White City
We need an official address to report to FEMA and the state
Also our use of space at the water district building is subject to an agreement that may not always available
We are asked the bidders for feasibility to look at purchasing property
would there be a tax increase to pay for it
White City has chosen not to impose a property tax
Salt lake County has assessed a property tax which it assesses all the cities in this county
and grants which pay for our public works services and capital projects
Sego Lilly has been totally paid for with these funds
Our system of the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District saves each of our new cities from having to build separate public works departments in each new city
Our residents benefit from not having to do a property tax
After seeing the petition and how much people love the park the way it is
Our whole council and community have supported the park by getting and paying for 30 new trees
we have put in all new tennis court lights
donated chain link to build new tennis court gates
We were able in 2017-18 to get updated safe playground equipment
Built Canal trail from 10600 South to Carnation Drive
Placed and paid for lighting along the trail
We have grant funds to complete the lighting
We are waiting on Rocky Mountain power to assist in finishing the project
This trail enables residents from all over the SE areas to get to the park safely

the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley said on Facebook Monday
They were able to confirm two “pips,” or the term used to describe when a chick pierces through the eggshell
“It looks like both pips are equally progressed,” read the Facebook post
“This suggests that the chicks have been hard at work for some time.”
It follows the nonprofit’s announcement on Sunday of one pip in the bald eagle couple’s three eggs in their nest
which is atop a 14-story Jeffrey pine tree near Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains
The nonprofit posted a photo from its Big Bear Bald Eagle Live-Feed Nest Cam that shows a small crack in one of the eggs
with the “initial pip” confirmed at 3:09 p.m
“Congratulations Jackie and Shadow and the entire eagle family
We’ve been waiting for almost 3 years,” the nonprofit posted

we will remain patient and hold the most positive thoughts.”

Jackie laid her first egg of the 2025 season
Several people told the Victorville Daily Press that over the years
they've grown "emotionally attached" to Jackie and Shadow

has been an emotional roller coaster ride," said Sheila Robinson of Victorville
"I was heartbroken last year when Jackie's eggs didn't hatch."
Jackie and Shadow’s 2024 eggsIn late January 2024
Shadow watched as Jackie laid three eggs days apart
with the expectation of them hatching about 35 days later
Jackie delivered her first egg on Jan. 25, 2024, followed by a second on Jan. 28, and a third on Jan. 31, the Daily Press reported.
Sandy Steers, the executive director of the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley
3 were still within the possible hatching window
whose nonprofit monitors the nest via two live webcams streamed to YouTube
Through a snowstorm and other challenges, Jackie and Shadow dutifully guarded the eggs through March 2024 until it became apparent their eggs wouldn't hatch.
Jackie and Shadow have been a mating pair since 2018
when Shadow replaced Jackie's previous mate
according to the Friends of Big Bear Valley
Jackie was believed to be the first recorded bald eagle chick hatched in Big Bear in 2012
She was initially known as Jack until it became apparent she was female

Thousands of eager viewers who have been watching the eagles’ nest via webcam since the first pip showed over the weekend got to see one of the hatchlings emerge, with glimpses of tiny feathers and a beak appearing just before 11:30 p.m. Monday.
The second hatchling arrived around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Sandy Steers, the executive director of the Friends of Big Bear Valley. A third hatchling is expected to reach full development Tuesday evening and could hatch in the next week.
“I’m thrilled that they have hatchlings and they have two chicks after two years of no hatching,” she said. “I’m thrilled for everyone watching. People are talking about tears of joy and that’s how I feel.”
The organization announced the hatchlings may be imminent on Sunday after the first pip appeared. The group operates a 24-hour webcam that monitors the eagles’ nest 145 feet up in a Jeffrey pine overlooking Big Bear Lake.
California
Friends of Big Bear Valley announced Sunday afternoon that pipping had begun for Jackie and Shadow
Pipping is when a baby bird uses its beak to crack open its shell
and a pip watch is the online vigil and hoopla surrounding that activity
“Tears of joy!!!” responded one person on Facebook after the first crack showed up Sunday
In 2023, Jackie and Shadow’s eggs were eaten by ravens
The pair added a rare third egg to their clutch in late January
a storm kept Jackie on her nest for 62 hours straight
Low oxygen levels at high altitude are one of the reasons the Friends of Big Bear Valley group suspects Jackie’s three eggs failed to hatch that year
snowy winters and rainy springs also dim young eaglets’ chances of survival
Bald eagle eggs typically have a 50-50 chance of hatching
fewer than 50% of eaglets survive their first year
according to the American Eagle Foundation

Print Plumes of smoke from Southern California’s fires blew across Big Bear on Sept
causing local air quality meters to return off-the-chart readings for particulate pollution
Officials report air quality on a color-coded scale
in which green indicates “good” and maroon denotes “hazardous” conditions
An air quality index above 150 is considered unhealthy for everyone
Big Bear’s AQI for fine particulate matter
reached a breathtaking daily average of 593
The reading was the third-highest AQI measured in Southern California since at least 1999, according to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
The first- and second-worst air quality days were recorded in Ventura County during the 2017 Thomas fire, the state’s largest wildfire on record. On Dec. 6 and 8, the Ojai monitoring station recorded daily average AQIs of 961 and 906, respectively.
Climate & Environment
The impending arrival of hot Santa Ana winds
combined with two years of overgrown vegetation
Weeks of sweltering heat primed Southern California’s hills and mountains to burn
Between Sept. 5 and 9, three wildfires erupted: The Line fire in San Bernardino County
the Bridge fires in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties and the Airport fire in Orange County
The Line fire began on Sept. 5 in Highland and soon spread through the mountains toward Big Bear. A 34-year-old Norco man has been arrested on suspicion of igniting the blaze
more than 38,000 acres of the San Bernardino Mountains had been consumed by the flames
While the fire hasn’t reached the resort areas
the ash particles and haze enveloped the skies of the mountain communities
High winds carried plumes of smoke throughout Big Bear Valley, closing ski resorts and most local businesses. Much of the area is still under an evacuation warning
“I think every agency is doing everything in their power to control this fire so many communities don’t get destroyed,” said Big Bear Lake City Manager Erik Sund
Particulate pollution
is dangerous to almost everyone: pregnant women
older people and adults with underlying conditions
“I worry about the differential impact of wildfire smoke. Even if the affluent get exposed to the same smoke as low-income communities, the low-income communities have less ability to protect themselves,” said Dr. John Balmes, a professor of medicine at UC San Francisco and a member of the California Air Resources Board
“Where the plume of smoke is going is where the biggest effect will be.”
During wildfire season, experts recommend Californians keep tabs on local air quality monitoring reports, available from the U.S. EPA’s AirNow.gov or services such as PurpleAir
“If the least you can do is stay inside and close all your windows and doors, that will substantially reduce your exposure,” said Suzanne Paulson, a professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences at UCLA. “If you’re trying to exercise, try to get out of that dark orange, red and that sort of horrifying dark purple-brown color that’s used for the really high AQIs.”

Jackie and Shadow are taking turns watching and feeding the baby birds
who won't be able to leave the nest for about 10 to 14 weeks
The baby birds are unnamed, but suggestions will come from the public. The tough decision-makers will be local Big Bear third-graders
and the third eaglet hatched sometime thereafter
Friends of Big Bear Valley confirmed on March 15 that one of Jackie and Shadow's eaglets had died
Concern over the chick came the day prior when only two of the eaglets were visible following snowy weather
"We are sad to let everyone know that one of Jackie and Shadow's chicks did not make it through the severe winter storm that brought over 2 feet of snow to the area
The chick's passing happened some time after all three were observed together getting fed at 6 pm on 3/13," the nonprofit said on its Facebook page
Friends of Big Bear Valley said it does not know what happened or why the eaglet died
and it's not sure which chick died because they were very close in size
In 2022, Jackie and Shadow successfully hatched an eaglet, later named Spirit via a contest held by Friends of Big Bear Valley

The Friends of Big Bear Valley said in a social media post that the eaglet passed away sometime after an evening feeding on March 13 because that was the last time all three eaglets were seen together
There was also a winter storm that coated the nest in snow
making it hard to see the eaglets for some time
The group said it has no way of knowing how or why the eaglet died and it's also hard to tell which eaglet it was since they are all close in size
"We understand that this news is very hard to hear
we must trust that it has its reasons," the group wrote on Facebook
"Please allow yourself to feel the sadness; please allow yourself to feel whatever you feel."
Jackie and Shadow have tried to produce offspring for years. These three hatchlings were the first successful clutch since 2022 when one of two eggs hatched an eaglet named Spirit
they disappointingly had their two eggs eaten by ravens while left unattended
But despite diligent incubation — including a 62-hour stretch in which Jackie protected them from harsh winds — none of them hatched
FROM THE ARCHIVES | Must watch live cam: Bald eagles Jackie and Shadow await hatchlings
A 24-hour live camera is set up in their nest — which is located 150 feet up in a tree overlooking Big Bear Valley in the San Bernadino National Forest
The camera feed has gained loyal viewers worldwide who patiently watch each year to see what the eagle couple is up to you and if their eggs will hatch
Long before the Friends of Big Bear Valley posted about the third eaglet's death
viewers noticed its absence and began posting theories online about what may have happened to it
The group said the other two chicks are doing well and that Jackie flew the remains of the eaglet out of the nest "with care."
we want to honor the life of this chick for its courage in getting as far as it did and for the joy it brought to us in its short time here," the group said

The Line Fire burned actively in the Santa Ana river drainage and produced most of the smoke yesterday. Firefighters are directing the fire down to the Santa Ana river. Burning material is rolling downhill to the drainage and burning back upslope to the black area. Crews and aircraft are focused on this area
The second area with active fire is the Bear and Siberia creek drainages. Crews have been able to put in line in a critical portion of this area. This area has been a challenge due to the extremely steep terrain. A heli-spot is being built which will allow firefighters to be inserted to build line and access the fire when possible
