Lake Superior looms large over Michigan's Upper Peninsula
offering plenty of opportunities for nautical exploration
"Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world," according to Pure Michigan
Lake Superior borders Michigan's Upper Peninsula to the south
along with the nearby states of Wisconsin and Minnesota to the west
Lake Superior has an average depth of about 500 feet, and a maximum depth of 1,332 feet, according to the Great Lakes Commission.
How wide is Lake Superior?Lake Superior's maximum width is 160 miles, Lake Superior Circle Tour notes.
How long is Lake Superior?Lake Superior is 350 miles long at maximum
While the Great Lakes Commission says Lake Superior is the coldest of the Great Lakes, temperatures change. Lake Superior is experiencing a warming trend, marking it among the fastest-warming lakes worldwide, according to GLISA
a collaborative between Michigan State University and University of Michigan supported by NOAA
Temperature observations across the lake on May 5 range as low as 37 degrees Fahrenheit
The lake has a reputation for being so cold that bacteria can't grow in body, so instead of floating, corpses sink and, as the Gordon Lightfoot song suggests, the lake never gives up its dead
Lake Superior's dozens of lighthouses include more than 30 in Michigan, Pure Michigan said. There are seven in Minnesota and seven in Wisconsin, according to Lake Superior Circle Tour. In Canada, there are 32, Lake Superior Magazine reported
The Benjamin Noble disappeared on Lake Superior during a severe storm on April 27, 1914, according to the Minnesota Historical Society
Isle Royale National Park
among the nation's least-visited national parks
is a remote island in the middle of Lake Superior
"Wolves and moose, the wild north woods forest, ever-changing weather and a cool climate, and the crystal clear waters and rugged shoreline of Lake Superior characterize Isle Royale National Park," Pure Michigan says
What is the origin of the name Lake Superior?French settlers named the lake Le Lac Superior meaning the upper lake
More: November's gales are famous on the Great Lakes. These wrecks show spring can be deadly
The lake's Ojibwe name is Kitchigami, meaning great lake, the National Park Service said

As the race thundered into the homestretch, it became a thrilling head-to-head battle between Reagan County and Tioga. Both squads were nearly even coming off the curve, but Reagan County's anchor leg, Nick Franklin, proved to be the difference-maker

Minnesota is into the 3rd wild turkey hunting season this spring. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says final numbers for season 1 showed just a 75 bird difference as opposed to last season. The second season showed a harvest number of 3,649
which was nearly identical to the 2nd season last spring
Last year set a new record for the spring turkey hunt with 16,714 birds shot. Schmitt says he shot his turkey Sunday morning. He says evidence of turkey hunting success is all over social media. Schmitt expects turkey hunting success to continue through the remaining seasons. We're in season C through May 6. Season D is May 7-13
Season E is May 14-20 and Season F is May 21-31
We're just over a week away from the walleye fishing opener in Minnesota. Schmitt says the forecast calls for warmer than normal conditions for the opener on May 10. He says that is less than ideal. Schmitt suggests fishing early and late in the day for the best chance for success. He says if you are looking for walleye go to known walleye lakes. In the local area that would include Koronis
Clearwater and the Chain of Lakes. Schmitt says if catching walleye is a struggle
the panfish bite is picking up as water temperatures in Central Minnesota have moved above 50 degrees
Schmitt plans to fish Leech Lake in northern Minnesota near Walker on the opener. He plans to look in shallow water with a jig and minnow. Schmitt says bait supplies are good across the state. He says you should be able to find all sorts of minnows and leaches are also in good supply

BIG LAKE — A review hearing has been set for the beginning of July for a Big Lake man authorities say brutally beat and killed his mother in 2020
Jordahl is charged with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder
His trial was originally set for September 2020
but it was delayed because the court found Jordahl not mentally competent to stand trial under Rule 20.02
There are two reasons Rule 20.02 is used: A defendant cannot assist in their own defense
or they do not understand that what they did was wrong
Jordahl was found competent to stand trial
the Sherburne County Attorney’s Office filed a request that Jordahl be brought from Minnesota Security Hospital in St
for a pretrial hearing and all subsequent hearings related to his criminal charges
Jordahl’s next review hearing is scheduled for July 9
a man called law enforcement and reported finding his son had killed his mother at their house at 1840 Golf St
Johnson’s body was found in a basement bedroom with "obvious facial trauma," according to court records
Law enforcement said that Jordahl admitted he punched
stabbed and bit Johnson upon entering her bedroom the night of July 22
Jordahl faces 40 years in prison per murder charge
I spoke to Tad Hoeschen from the St. Coud Police Department on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, about some concerns regarding the Minnesota Predatory Offender Registry. In regard to a recent post, that website, FamilyWatchdog.com
did not have completely accurate information
Tad told me that Minnesota has had a registry for quite some time
Cloud case back in the 90s that was the catalyst that created the registry—a murder case where the Predator should have been followed and watched more closely
The St Cloud Crisis Intervention team takes this registry very seriously
and they monitor all of the people who have to register
People also need to know that the registry includes other crimes like stalking
there are four different levels of registry ranking from 'Unlevel' to 'Level 3'
Level 1 offenders are the least likely to re-offend
and daycares and schools are automatically notified if they request that information
These are the offenders who are the mostly likely to re-offend
Media release as sent out as soon as possible if someone at this level is released
there was a website called www.familywatchdog.com that is put out NOT-so-Accurate information regarding offenders
"So we don't want individuals being targeted for something that they didn't do
The criminal justice system is there for a reason
and we want to make sure that there is due process and due diligence," Tad Hoeschen
Tad informed me that monitoring is done on those listed on the registry when they are released
Not all information that you see on the internet is accurate
Some of the information in this case was correct regarding the Level 3
But information on others was NOT."There's enough for us to worry about in this world right now
and there's no need to be worrying about something that isn't true,' said Tad Hoeschen

, which may have had good intent, did not have completely accurate information.
Tad told me that Minnesota has had a registry for quite some time. There was a St. Cloud case back in the 90s that was the catalyst that created the registry—a murder case where the Predator should have been followed and watched more closely.
The St Cloud Crisis Intervention team takes this registry very seriously, and they monitor all of the people who have to register. People also need to know that the registry includes other crimes like stalking, indecent exposure, and not just sex offenders.
Media release as sent out as soon as possible if someone at this level is released.
Recently, there was a website called www.familywatchdog.com that is put out NOT-so-Accurate information regarding offenders.
"So we don't want individuals being targeted for something that they didn't do. The criminal justice system is there for a reason, and we want to make sure that there is due process and due diligence," Tad Hoeschen.
Tad informed me that monitoring is done on those listed on the registry when they are released, to make sure they are compliant. If they are not, then SCPD presses charges against them.
The main takeaway is this. Not all information that you see on the internet is accurate. Some of the information in this case was correct regarding the Level 3, which is public knowledge. But information on others was NOT."There's enough for us to worry about in this world right now, and there's no need to be worrying about something that isn't true,' said Tad Hoeschen.

The state’s “Big 10″ account for nearly half of the annual harvest.
In Minnesota, big lakes mean big fish, and lots of them.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, the state’s 10 largest inland lakes feature a combined surface area of 825,000 acres and produce about 40% of Minnesota’s annual walleye harvest.
These lakes — and their walleyes — also account for the bulk of the approximately $2.4 billion spent each year on fishing in Minnesota.
So important are these waterways that the DNR assigns a fisheries specialist to each. And every fall, the agency gauges each lake’s productivity so bag limits and other restrictions can be adjusted, if necessary.
Going fishing on the opener or later this summer?
These lake profiles might get you hooked on Minnesota’s “Big 10.”

a Skagit County Superior Court judge issued a mistrial for a Big Lake woman accused of second-degree murder
is accused of shooting and killing 32-year-old Kamran Cohee in February 2021 after a disagreement over the possible theft of a political sign in Conijn’s front yard
Judge Laura Riquelme noted the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict in the case leading her to declare a mistrial
What happens next is up to the Skagit County Prosecutor’s office and Conijn’s attorney
A plea agreement can be reached or the prosecutor can try the case again in front of a different jury
Brandon Platter, senior deputy prosecuting attorney, told the Skagit Valley Herald that if he and Conijn’s attorney cannot come to an agreement
Conijn was arrested by Skagit County Sheriff’s Office Deputies on Feb
shots being fired and someone lying dead in the driveway at a Big Lake residence
they found Cohee’s body in the driveway and Conijn and her husband exited the residence
The incident started after the driver of a vehicle pulled over into the Conijns’ driveway
told deputies he believed the driver was attempting to steal a “Loren Culp for Governor” sign
a former gubernatorial candidate who challenged former Gov
He went to confront the driver and a fight ensued
The driver told deputies that he had intended to let some air out of his tires before he was confronted by John Conijn
The driver said Conijn had called for his wife to get a gun
John Conijn said he was chased back into the house and that Cohee and the driver were beating on the door with a wheelbarrow
Angela Conijn then exited the house with a firearm and shot toward the end of the driveway where the vehicle was located
Cohee was in between the house and the vehicle
The Skagit County Coroner ruled Cohee was shot in the head
At Conijn’s first court appearance, her attorney argued the shooting was in self-defense, according to King 5
The self-defense claim was argued in trial with Conijn’s attorney going so far as to ensure that Cohee was not referred to as a victim during the prosecutor’s arguments

Alaska State Troopers say an argument involving alleged members of rival gangs escalated to gunfire overnight Friday at a bonfire party in Big Lake
Ravensmoon Rupp, 20, was charged with three counts of first-degree and second-degree assault in the confrontation, as well as tampering with physical evidence. Troopers said in an online dispatch that Palmer and Wasilla police also responded to the incident
According to a charging document against Rupp
troopers first received reports of the West Susitna Drive shooting shortly after midnight Saturday
who was in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his shoulders and left thigh
Another man and a woman were each shot at least once
The critically wounded man told troopers that a man he believed to be Rupp shot him from the back seat of a passing Nissan Altima
He said another partygoer had told him people there were going to “rough up” Rupp for allegedly assaulting women
Other people who were at the party told troopers that Rupp was associated with the Bloods gang and had been known to carry firearms
He and his friends reportedly had a rivalry with the critically injured victim
The partygoer who mentioned “roughing up” Rupp told troopers that he thought the confrontation would involve a fistfight between the two groups
That witness said he told Rupp not to hit women as Rupp got into the Altima’s back seat
That’s when Rupp allegedly opened fire from the vehicle
The driver of the Altima told troopers she heard shooting but didn’t know where it was coming from
She said she crashed the car soon after leaving the party
and another driver took its occupants to a Timberline Drive home
Troopers found the crashed Altima with bullet damage in one window’s trim and a 9mm cartridge inside
where they detained Rupp and took him to the Mat-Su trooper post
“Ravensmoon requested an attorney before an interview could be conducted with him,” troopers said
Rupp’s bail was set at $70,000 during an initial court appearance Sunday
He remained in custody Monday at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility
on the waters of Lake Champlain that straddles the border of New York and Vermont
angler Roy Gangloff landed the fish of a lifetime: a massive northern-strain largemouth bass weighing 7 pounds
13 ounces — the largest bass an experienced biologist has seen on the massive lake in nearly three decades
Gangloff, an avid multi-species angler, has spent a lifetime fishing the dynamic, 120-mile-long, 278,480-acre lake that stretches north to south along the state border. His previous personal best largemouth from Champlain weighed a respectable 6 pounds
12 ounces. Fish of this size are rare in northern latitudes
where short growing seasons and harsh winters slow their growth compared to their southern counterparts
While a 7-pound bass might be common in warmer states
it represents decades of survival and growth
I was out fishing that day with my friend Shawn P
a Vermont fisheries biologist and passionate angler
I first met Good in 2022 while filming a YouTube series
and he quickly proved himself to be one of “us” — a fisherman first
His passion for fishing led to a career in biology
and I’ve come to admire the hard work biologists like him do behind the scenes to support our fisheries
“Champlain is known to be an incredibly prolific and productive fishery — one of the best in the country,” Good said
“But the 40 miles of lake south of the bridge to New York in Addison
“The adjacent low-lying farmland and fertile soils of the Champlain Valley make this end of the lake the polar opposite of what you see up north
catching a few 3- to 5-pound Champlain bass on the new Biwaa 6-inch Kapsiz HD swimbaits
We met up with him to help document the catch
and the Bubba scale confirmed the weight: 7 pounds
13 ounces; the fish measured 22.5 inches long with an 18-inch girth
Gangloff had been throwing a lipless crankbait — likely an original 1/2-ounce Rat-L-Trap in Chartreuse Shiner — in shallow water
in a small bay in the southern portion of the lake
It was the biggest largemouth bass Good had seen in his 28-year career
He collected a spine sample for aging back at the lab
Of the tens of thousands of bass he’s handled on Champlain
this was the closest he’s seen to the elusive 8-pound mark.
He estimates the fish to be between 15 and 20 years old — an incredible age in a region where largemouths rarely reach double digits in weight
If you haven’t made the trip to this special corner of the United States to fish Lake Champlain
Those of you who live nearby are fortunate — and you should know that one of your own is working hard to ensure these experiences continue for generations to come
But these traits make the south lake one of the best places for a true giant,” Good said
“There’s endless habitat — from channel drops
and vast expanses of shallow vegetation like bulrushes
“This habitat supports an enormous forage base of perch
And while we rarely see fish like this coming out of Champlain
Roy’s fish really shows off what the lake is capable of producing.
“The potential and possibility are always there — it’s just such a huge lake with literally millions of places for them to be and hide.”
congratulations to Roy Gangloff on a true fish of a lifetime
and thank you for sharing the moment with us
And hats off to Shawn Good for his decades of dedication to managing one of the top 10 bass fisheries in the world.

— Big Lake Humane Society in Muskegon is losing all of its water after a well completely broke down this weekend
they have no clean water for the roughly 75 dogs and cats in their care
While they raise the funds to replace their well
the nonprofit is also in need of a temporary supply of the bare necessities
all living creatures need food and water,” said Shelter Manager for Big Lake Humane Society Velvet Lyght
“We found out that there was a leak in one of the pumps because the snow was melting when it was 2 degrees out
Snow doesn't melt when it's 2 degrees out in Michigan.”
Lyght explains that the shelter has two water pumps
One pump was discovered to not be working at all
The other pump was running continuously on the same circuit
“It was also discovered that this tank has been completely full of silt and water for who knows how long
which was causing the pumps to overheat and overcompensate because they always continuously ran on the same surface circuit
“The water is welling up through all of the dirt and sand
And it's also that dirt and sand is getting into the water main line
making it so that the water is contaminated,” Lyght said
The temporary fix is staff and nearby community filling up containers of water from their own faucets
“We’re able to get some water in solely for the purpose of cleaning and laundry,” Lyght said
drinkable water that we can give our animals every day,” Lyght said
Big Lake Humane Society says it will cost roughly $12,000

See the Midwest author speak about his novel on Jan
Boldt brings his background in environmental law and his MFA in Fiction from Augsburg University to his latest novel
Praised as one of the best legal thrillers of the year by Kirkus Reviews
the novel blends legal drama with timely climate themes and dynamic characters
Boldt will be at Boswell Books on Jan
his background in environmental law and more
It is set in Wisconsin and the dramatic setting is a case involving coal shipping on Lake Superior
But the characters and the character development are at the heart of it
hopefully to tell a fun and intriguing story
Cases mean different things to different people
and that was part of what I did learn from hearing people’s concerns for 25 years across the state
One of the things that good fiction can do is help give us an empathetic understanding of different types of people or just to life
I think that is especially true in the environmental setting
like this book addresses climate with the coal tie in
We all have some responsibility when it comes to the climate crisis
and everyone has a different approach to it so that was part of my thematic concerns were what makes people engage with important issues like the climate crisis but also with each other
In both the personal and the public setting
some people are more resilient and open to change and growth
the case in my novel is one part of a much larger narrative where the characters other issues and concerns fit in
he doesn’t want to get involved with the case
His girlfriend is an environmental lawyer with strong convictions about fighting climate change
she’s trying to get him involved as the story opens
Then on the other side of the case is Courtney
she’s a tough corporate attorney that represents the coal company
who is a formal attorney whose fresh out of prison and trying to get his life together
but he has a lot of relevant background knowledge about coal shipping and environmental law
both sides are trying to get Earl involved as the story opens
there’s this blending of the personal stories of each of the characters
and then the personal issues and concerns that are reflected in this environmental case as well
It’s really about the environment of the upper Midwest
but there were some significant impacts of climate during that time here
we had those fires from Canada in that summer of 2023
I really wanted to have that local flavor of these sort of bigger issues and down to the intimate level of the individual person and their connections and dynamics to really humanize the local
but also the issues that we all face together
that I wanted to have a hopeful story about climate
There are so many that are set in a post-apocalyptic world
and I know people enjoy both reading and writing those
but I wanted a realistic take on it that was still hopeful
There is a hopefulness about doing environmental work because people do care
I would go to hearings around the state where there would be 200 people in a huge audience or more sometimes
People would sit through these hearings because they cared about the places around our beautiful state
Also there is intrigue and there is sort of inherent drama in most legal cases
but also environmental cases in particular because of the various approaches that people bring to that situation
but I have now written two novels and I have even more respect for people who have been authors over many years
I did workshop it with a number of authors around the country
It was striking how people of different backgrounds
but often times they had similar reactions to my work
as far as the characters that stood out for them and the narrative arc of the individual people
I’m looking forward to moving on at least for a book or two
I had a piece that I wrote about my late wife that went viral in HuffPost
BuzzFeed and it made me realize how much people respond to and need stories that touch on love and grief and resilience in the face of that
I also have a collection of stories that are all set in Wisconsin and they all touch base with Blue Lake
I suspect that I will get back to these characters
but I’m going to take a break for now from them
particularly in environmental situations right now with respect to the climate
we’ve also made tremendous progress in that area
I think the effort to humanize individual choices
I think that’s a contribution that I’m hoping to make around both environmental issues and the various approaches to life that people have
and try to have empathy for each other and try to move forward together in some of these looming issues like the climate crisis

A significant lake effect snow event will impact the Great Lakes starting on Thanksgiving and continuing into the weekend
Feet of snow may snarl post-Thanksgiving travel
Parts of the Great Lakes region will be getting a lot of snow later this week into the weekend. The TemperatureRadar shows arctic air blasting across the Great Lakes starting tomorrow
When you combine this cold air with unusually warm water temperatures in the Great Lakes
a prolific lake effect snow event will set up
The comparatively warm waters of the Great Lakes will provide plenty of instability for snow showers. The WeatherRadar shows snow showers starting on Thanksgiving and continuing into the holiday weekend
which means the bands of lake effect snow will focus on western and northern Michigan
northeastern Ohio and portions of western and northern New York
Some of the biggest impacts will be felt from Erie
where snow totals in excess of one foot are possible
Similar totals are also possible from Syracuse to Watertown
could see 6-12 inches of snow through the weekend
Travel conditions can quickly deteriorate in a short amount of time as lake effect snow bands set up. Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar and prepare for travel delays
