comfortable; walkable; adjustable strap; look pretty with EVERYTHING (dresses shorts…the list goes on); I LOVE the shiny patent leather versions (super chic) shiny versions hold up exceptionally well and don’t show wear and tear as much as the regular leather version with suede footbeds; was nervous about the shine coating on the footbed (and possible sweat issues) but have been completely happy with the feel Cons: People either love or hate the Madrids and love or hate Birkenstock’s high shine leather; some people’s feet slip out of Madrids while they’re walking(if this is you, try adjusting the strap or go with the Arizonas in the same gorgeous colorways and big buckle options); the patent (high shine leather) is stiffer and harder to the touch than the nubuck and synthetic versions (see notes at the bottom of post about my breaking in experience with these Birkenstocks); some folks have issues with the buckle digging in to their feet (I haven’t experienced this); no soft footbed option in the Madrids -back to table of contents- Pros: Comfortable; walkable; adjustable strap; this style looks pretty with EVERYTHING; Madrid Big Buckles are the most “non-Birk looking” Birks I own (for those of you not sold on typical Birk styles); beautiful neutral color options in the oiled and nubuck leather; the leather is a bit softer and more flexible than the high shine leather versions of the Madrid Where To Buy: |Birkenstock Pros: More budget-friendly than the other Madrids; suede comfortable and supportive footbed; skinnier buckle and strap (if that appeals to you); synthetic material used for strap with fleece-y lining; Birkenstock describes this material as “skin-friendly”; good option for people who don’t like the typical Birkenstock leather strap material Cons: I don’t like the way the skinny strap and buckle look on my feet…like I don’t like it…at.ALL!; synthetic “skin-friendly” material didn’t feel THAT different to me once on my foot (but I don’t have problems with Birkenstock’s typical leather material); if you have difficultly keeping the regular Madrid on your feet you’re likely going to have the same issue with this skinny strap style; no wide sizing and I size down to a 37 in the Birkenstock Madrid sandals I have a wide-ish foot (I don’t typically need wide sizing and the narrow/medium (A-B width) in this Birk fits me well Note: Some retailers describe the width as “medium” but they’re actually referencing the A-B narrow/medium width that I’m wearing If your feet don’t like the one strap Madrid, the classic double strap Arizona is my other top pick and quickly joining the Madrids in the most-worn category in particular has SOOOOO many variations and fresh updates that keep things interesting in the Birkenstock world Pros: Comfortable; walkable; adjustable straps; my top pick for a Birkenstock slide if the Madrids don’t work for your feet; same big buckle styling that I LOVE but with two straps for added security and a classic Birk look; fabulous selection of colorways I love the look of the Arizonas in particular with all the wide-leg jeans and pants Cons: A bit heavier looking than the more delicate Madrids (especially with dresses); although I LOVE the way the glossy colors look they are a little stiffer initially and rub a bit more when breaking in any break in period is totally worth it because I adore mine Sizing: Size down. I wear a 7 in most sandal brands, a 7.5 in most boots, and I size down to a 37 in the Birkenstock Arizonas and the narrow/medium (A-B width) in the Birkenstock Arizonas fits me well Note: Many retailers describe the width as “medium” but they’re referencing the A-B width that Birkenstock calls “narrow/medium” Cons: The rivets are more subtle than I thought they would be so if you’re looking for a total statement Birkenstock this might not be as bold as you want; they’ve been selling out fast since they dropped so fingers crossed; wish they came in more colorways and the narrow/medium (A-B width) in these Birkenstock Arizonas fits me well I’ve only seen this style in the narrow/medium width Pros: Softer footbed (has an extra foam layer) for those with more sensitive feet; extra shock-absorbing; soft suede mold-to-your foot footbed come in the BEST metallic options as well as the traditional softer suede and leather straps Cons: I wish this style came in a big buckle option; the metallics take a bit longer to soften than the suede and regular leather but I think it’s worth it for a fresh Birk look Where To Shop: Bloomies | Birkenstock Pros: A very unique and on-trend stylish look for Birkenstock; the details (including the contrast stitching custom matched footbed coloring; and soft strap lining) are fantastic; if you’re a huge Birkenstock fan and collector these feel very special; typical Birkenstock supportive contoured footbed They do come in wide sizing on Birk’s site Where To Shop: Nordstrom | Anthro | Shopbop | DSW The chunky/platform styles of Papillio by Birkenstocks are a newer addition to the Birkenstock line-up and one I’m totally loving Definitely adds a bit more interest and edge (especially with the lug sole ones) and I like the heavier look with wide-leg and baggy jeans especially I’ve also been wearing my chunky Birks with dresses for a more casual look when I don’t want the dress outfit to look too “precious” Pros: On-trend; bold and playful look; beloved Birkenstock comfort firm supportive feel despite “squishy platform look”; I like the streamlined single color versions but available in other materials/contrasting colors as well Cons: For those of you who like squishy platform pillow slides these are NOT that (these are firm and supportive); less classic in style than other Birks; they’re heavier and clunkier than regular Birks Sizing: Per usual with Birkenstocks, I size down. I wear a 7 in most sandal brands, a 7.5 in most boots, and I size down to a 37 in these I have a wide-ish foot (I don’t typically need wide sizing I have not found this particular pair in wide sizing Where To Shop: Nordstrom | Anthro | Shopbop | DSW Cons: Traditional firm and supportive Birk footbed (not cushiony like many platform sandals…if you’re looking for that); less classic in style than other Birks; heavier in weight and appearance than traditional Birks Have only seen this style available in the A-B (narrow/regular) width which fits my foot fine Cons: I personally like the heavier feel and look of the platform Birks, but for some they’re too heavy and bulky.; a little too earthy looking for me especially in the dark brown…I preferred the chunkier bolder look of these My typical sandal size is a 7 and boot is 7.5 Have only seen this style available in the A-B (narrow/regular) width which fits my foot fine Where To Shop: Nordstrom | QVC | Birkenstock Cons: I really like these, but just not as much as these; I personally like the heavier feel and look of the platform Birks but for some they’re too heavy and bulky Where To Buy: DSW | Birkenstock When it comes to travel sandals that you can ACTUALLY walk in (even on cobblestones) and that are ACTUALLY supportive for all day sight-seeing and that are ACTUALLY versatile for dressing up a bit at night Papillio by Birkenstock wedges are hard to beat and I’m a huge fan of their supportive footbed (of course) Pros: SUPER comfortable; very supportive contoured footbed with nice arch support; top and bottom strap both adjustable; ankle strap for added security; lovely vintage-y vibe with simple buckles; these have a permanent place in my forever-closet due to their versatility; can work for dressy-ish or all-day walking (they’re THAT comfortable); perfect for travel Cons: Not modern or trendy; the leather is typical Birkenstock leather (not buttery soft like some sandal brands); not as many color options as I would like no wide sizing available; if you’re looking for a squishy soft wedge footbed these aren’t for you…these are very firm Sizing: Size down (like the other Birks above) I have not found this particular Birkenstock in wide sizing DSW and Birkenstock carry the same “narrow/medium A-B” widths Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Anthro | Birkenstock Pros: SUPER comfortable; SUPER supportive footbed; ankle strap for added security; minimalist classic styling without the prominent buckle hardware of the Soleys; versatile; great option as a travel or everyday shoe that could be worn easily with dresses or casual with jeans/pants/shorts for everyday exploring; a fun new color is out this year Cons: Not trendy or very modern in style (could even be considered “boring”); leather is typical Birkenstock leather (not as buttery soft as some comfort sandals); no wide sizing; firm footbed (not soft & squishy…if that’s your preference) Nordstrom and Anthro carry the same “narrow/medium A-B” widths Where To Buy: Anthro | Nordstrom | Birkenstock Cons: If you like a squishier softer platform sandal Birkenstock wedges and platforms have a very firm footbed; only one strap is adjustable; no wide sizing but nothing special…didn’t get me super excited Sizing: Size down (like the other Birks). I wear a 7 in most sandal brands, a 7.5 in most boots, and I sized down to a 37 in these & Birkenstock all carry the same “narrow/medium A-B” widths which fits me (even though I have a wide-ish foot) Pros: Such a fun style for Birkenstocks with the puffy straps; love that they’re more playful and similar to many other brands’ on-trend platform sandals right now but have Birkenstock’s beloved countoured and supportive footbed; straps are puffy and very soft to the touch but then the velcro was exposed and I didn’t like that look Pros: Really elegant design with clean chic lines from the side; Birko-Flor material is a tad shiny and has a polished sophisticated luxe look but isn’t as stiff as the patent leather of my Arizona Big Buckles; typical contoured supportive Birkenstock footbed that my feet love Cons: Difficult to find in stock and limited colorways; very similar to the Big Buckle Arizonas that many of us already have and love Sizing: Per usual with most Birkenstock styles I typically wear a 7 in sandals and a 7.5 in boots and wear a 37 in these Birkenstocks The Sydneys are available in wide sizing on Birk’s site but my feet are happy with the narrow/medium A-B sizing Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Backcountry Although my favorite Arizonas and Madrids that I reviewed in my first selfie section are beloved classics A classic style with several variations available right now Pros: You can now go with a classic Birkenstock flip-flop or a an updated big-buckle style; lots of colors and materials; comfortable; walkable; adjustable strap; available in medium and wide sizing; HUGE range of colors and variations; style can be dressed up a bit (especially with the slightly shimmery/glossy colors); look great with summer dresses; can be worn with jeans and shorts too; a HUGE crowd favorite (tons of readers love these and years of good reviews) Sizing: Size down and pay attention to width on this one I wear the narrow/medium A-B width in most Birkenstocks but in the Gizehs I’m wearing a regular/wide C-D I have a wide-ish foot but typically do not take “wide” sizing Wearing a 37 (typically I wear a 7 or 7.5) Where To Buy: DSW Pros: Beautiful braided design; LOVE the cognac color; same comfortable footbed as my other Birks Cons: UGH! Horrifically uncomfortable for my feet! I couldn’t get these off fast enough; they have a completely different between-the-toe thingy than the big-buckle Gizehs — very rough and painful; if you love this style and are used to between-the-toe thingies and breaking them in go for it Where To Buy: DSW Bag | Denim | Similar Sweater I’m wearing a 37 C-D regular/wide sizing (despite wearing A-B narrow/medium sizing in other Birks) Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Saks | Shopbop same beloved footbed and support but for those who like a slingback strap; available in classic styles but I personally like the style update of both the patent leather AND the big buckle for the Milano Cons: If your feet have a hard time with the breaking-in period of any of the Birkenstock straps another strap on the back means more touching and rubbing against your foot; it’s personally a little too much shoe for me and I prefer the double strap Arizona or the single strap Madrid and I sized down to a 37 in the Birkenstock Milanos and still have plenty of room Where To Buy: Bloomies | Birkenstock Pros: Immediately comfortable with some nice give in the straps; because the straps on the Francas are thinner than my typical Madrids and Arizonas they instantly felt softer and more flexible; all three straps are adjustable to create a perfect fit; although I’ve always loved Birkenstock’s standard footbed I’m definitely not complaining about the softer footbed on these Francas (a bit more cushion but doesn’t sacrifice the support I’ve come to love in the Birkenstock footbed) Cons: I personally don’t love the style as much as the Madrids and Gizehs; the Francas have more of the traditional earthy Birk look that doesn’t fit as well with my go-to summer/spring outfits pay attention to the width on this one and size down but in the Gizehs and the Francas I’m wearing a regular/wide C-D but typically do not take “wide” sizing -back to table of contents- Where To Buy: QVC Yep… Birkenstocks for EVERYTHING summer…including water play EVA Birkenstocks are always packed for any of my warm-weather vacations and adventures involving any kind of water Pros: I’ve worn and loved this exact flip-flop for years when I’m around water; I’m typically a FitFlop fan for my flip-flops but actually prefer the Birkenstock Honolulu to the equivalent water-friendly style from FitFlop; wildly lightweight beloved contoured supportive Birkenstock footbed; easy to clean with a simple rinse Cons: The Honolulus are hard to find in stock and are available in very limited colors- Boo!; I love the comfort of the Arizona EVA’s as an alternative but I’m hoping they bring the Honolulu’s back in the bronze and gold and other colors Sizing: Size down (like almost all other Birkenstock styles) Where To Shop: Nordstrom | Birkenstock Pros: Water-friendly EVA; super lightweight; gorgeous buckles; much more luxe/sophisticated looking than other Birk EVA styles; under $60; contoured supportive footbed design Cons: The eggshell colorway isn’t my favorite for my skintone and I wish they had more variety/selection in the colors for this great style; my hope is more colorways will be released if not this year and fondant pink; EVA material not as sturdy as traditional Birkenstock materials My typical sandal size is a 7 and boot size is 7.5 Pros: I adore the one strap Madrid style for a pool-friendly sandal; add in the really pretty luxe-looking big buckle and the supportive contoured footbed and the price…and they’re perfection (IF they came in more colorways) Cons: Wish they were available in more neutral colorways (like a tan or gold or copper); as of now they only have green and black; I don’t think I love the eggshell for my coloring…may exchange for the light rose or the black; EVA is not as sturdy as traditional Birkenstock materials Where to Buy: Nordstrom | Anthro beloved contoured supportive Birkenstock footbed; both straps adjustable; amazing for travel; easy to clean with a simple rinse Cons: Wish they came in the big buckle style; wish they came in more shades of neutrals (tans There are many people’s feet who absolutely ADORE the soft footbed option in Birkenstocks because the regular Birkenstock footbed is too firm I love a nice supportive firm footbed for all day walking so the traditional Birkenstock footbed works well for me The soft footbed from Birkenstock has an extra layer of shock-absorbing foam built into the footbed but my feet definitely don’t require the extra cushion with this brand If you have very sensitive feet there are Birkenstock options that have the soft footbed AND the soft suede uppers for minimal or no break-in time I mention the sizing/width above with each Birkenstock I tried First of all, almost all of the Birkenstocks I’ve ever tried run big. I typically wear a 7 in sandals, and a 7.5 in boots, but I wear a European size 37 in almost all Birkenstocks (which Birkenstock says on their sizing chart translates into a size 6-6.5 in US sizing), so my recommendation is to size down. Unless you’re ordering the Buckley’s. For the Buckley’s I wear my typical size 38 Birkenstocks width options are not as easy-to-understand as I would like for them to be They have two width options that confusingly go by several names The first option is A-B width and is called narrow or medium sizing at Nordstrom they call this width “B” at Saks and Anthro they don’t even name the width (but the A-B is typically the default that they carry) Another way to differentiate the widths is by looking at the footbed of the sandal C-D (regular/wide) sizing has an open (not colored in) image and A-B (narrow/medium) sizing has a solid foot image (colored in) as shown below If you’re having trouble finding the right width Birkenstock for your foot, I suggest checking out Birkenstock’s sizing information page here A lot of people ask about breaking in Birkenstocks Some Birks require break-in periods for me I think it depends on the style of the Birk how frequently you’ve already been wearing sandals The bottom of my feet never have a hard time or need break-in time with Birkenstock’s classic supportive firm contoured footbed. Shana’s feet, however, prefer more cushion, so she gravitates toward the soft footbed styles that are immediately comfortable for the bottom of her feet They have an additional layer of cushioned foam for more shock-absorption The harder leather straps on many Birkenstocks (especially the wider straps) do need to be broken in sometimes The first pair of Birkenstock Madrids I bought years and years ago gave me blisters for the first week along the top leather strap and after several times wearing them out and about with bandaids (maybe a week?) they were fine and continued to get more and more broken in The next summer I bought the size smaller (the correct size for my foot) in the same Madrid style and they gave me zero blisters and were instantly comfortable The leather continues to get softer with each wear My most worn Birkenstocks are the high shine patent leather versions of the Madrid as well as the Arizonas Because my feet are very used to wearing both styles but I will definitely point out that the patent leather is harder than the regular leather or suede The patent leather does get more flexible with wear Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Saks | Anthro If you’re not used to wearing a certain Birkenstock style you may have to break them in and get your feet used to a new style I suggest wearing them around the house at first and then for shorter walks…don’t walk miles in them right out of the box I also will sometimes adjust the buckle if I feel something rubbing and make small adjustments daily to find the sweet spot the indentations and markings of your individual foot and toe shape on the footbed and feel the leather soften Birkenstock’s website suggests wearing new Birkenstocks for 30-minute increments to let the leather soften before committing to wearing them out and about all day long but everyone’s tolerance to pressure and various materials is totally different and finding what YOUR feet like is very important Feel free to chime in on any of your Birkenstock favorites tricks for breaking in specific styles of Birkenstocks and what your thoughts are on any classic or newer Birkenstock styles This post continues to be updated with new Birkenstock styles and finds so you’ll see comments below from years past If there are specific Birkenstocks you want me to take a look at in the future shout it out…or maybe someone else in this community has tried them I could chat comfort shoes with you guys all.day.long…love hearing from you all We’re a shopping and lifestyle website with a playful We focus on authenticity and believe that we all feel our best when we’re our most genuine selves a supporter and a totally inclusive place for style – ALL are welcome here Including the first discounts on the latest Alienware Area-51 models The official Dell Store has just launched another big spring sale this week including some superb discounts for those looking to pick up a new gaming PC With prices ranging all the way from $799 to an eye-watering $4,999 there's plenty to check out this week including some of the best deals I've seen since Black Friday and the first discounts on the brand's latest Alienware models I've picked out the best gaming deals in the Dell spring sale just down below Both are great if you need a decent bang-for-the-buck machine that still has a decent amount of power under the hood but it's superb if you just want a reliable machine that can provide smooth frame rates at 1080p For a higher-end machine, however, check out today's discounts of up to $500 on the latest Alienware Area-51 models. The Panoply Arts Festival, presented by Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, returns this weekend, April 25-27, to Big Spring Park in Huntsville. This premier Southeast arts weekend is a celebration of art, music, and community showcasing the Huntsville area’s unique blend of creativity. Over four decades, Panoply Arts Festival has evolved into a one-of-a-kind arts weekend showcasing Huntsville’s innovative spark through a three-day celebration of art, music and more. The 2025 Panoply celebration kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 25, with regionally celebrated bands and musicians, the fan-favorite juried Art Marketplace, STEAM Street, art interactives, craft beer and wine, local food trucks and more. For ease of convenience, Panoply 2025 will return to three entrances presented by Huntsville Utilities. Entrances will be located on Church Street near the Downtown YMCA, Williams Avenue at Big Spring Park, and Monroe Street across from the Von Braun Center. Friday, April 25, from 5 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. (Art Marketplace closes at 7:30 p.m.) Sunday, April 27, from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. New this year will be the addition of DJs on Friday and Saturday to keep the music flowing and everyone dancing in the park in between acts. Sunday will feature five distinct performers ranging from jazz to bluegrass. Panoply will close the 2025 festival on Sunday with a new alternative rock band that bridges the gap between classic Southern influences and modern rock sensibilities – Red Flags – giving us a sneak peak of their opening set for the Avett Brothers in May. Each year, Arts Huntsville commissions an artist to create an art piece that captures the festival’s spirit and the community. This year’s Panoply poster artist is Danny Cottingham. Danny Cottingham is a North Alabama artist living in Huntsville, where he states the city’s “Rocket City” identity fuels his retro-futuristic art. His work, primarily acrylic paintings on wood, features rockets, robots and vintage sci-fi themes, though he also explores classic subjects. Beyond painting, Danny is a graphic designer for national companies and a dance music artist/ DJ, showcasing a diverse creative range. “We are thrilled to feature local artist Danny Cottingham’s work on the 2025 Panoply poster and festival t-shirts,” shared Arts Huntsville Executive Director Allison Dillon- Jauken. “This year, as Panoply serves as the official Saturday Night After-Party for the Huntsville Comic and Pop Culture Expo, we’re confident festivalgoers of all ages will see themselves in Danny’s playful and vibrant depiction of Panoply taking over downtown Huntsville.” Cottingham will sell his original paintings at Panoply, and festivalgoers can purchase merchandise featuring his artwork at the Panoply Store, presented by Georgia Pacific. The Panoply ZenZone, presented by Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children, returns this year to support festivalgoer of all ages with sensory needs. Panoply, by definition, is a magnificent array. At the Panoply ZenZone, festivalgoers of all ages will find an intentionally designed space in Big Spring Park that provides sensory resources for attendees to better enjoy the Panoply experience. The sensory-friendly space also offers an area for nursing mothers within the festival. Hands-on Activities Panoply Arts Festival is a colorful exploration of the arts for everyone. Festivalgoers of all ages will also get to stretch their creative muscles with hands-on community art activities. Panoply’s STEAM Street, presented by Toyota AL, will feature activities by: • Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theatre’s Galaxy of Wonder presented by National Space Club • Huntsville Ballet’s Rocket Dancers presented by KBR • Hovercrafts presented by Hexagon • Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) Animate your Imagination • Wild Ones of North Alabama’s Garden of Hope presented by TVA • Huntsville City Schools Magnet Program’s Binary Bracelets presented by Intrepid This year’s Panoply Creativity Corner, presented by Virginia and Parker Griffith, will offer Art Adventures for all to enjoy: • Panoply Robot Puppets presented by Cynthia & Rey Almodovar • Dancing Princesses & Spring Snake Sculptures • Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guilds ‘Discover Music’ presented by Publix Charities. The Symphony Guild’s popular interactive experience introduces young people to musical instruments. • Fan- favorite “Paint the Panoply Letters” presented by SCHOEL The Panoply tradition of Military Salute Night, presented by Leidos, continues Friday, April 25th. All active- duty military and Armed Forces Reserves and their dependents are welcomed to the park for a free evening of entertainment. Military personnel will be asked to show their current military ID at the entrances. Panoply Food, Treats, Beer & Wine: Panoply’s popular Craft Beer and Wine Tent returns, featuring select wine and local craft beer from Yellowhammer and Straight to Ale. Panoply will also showcase a great assortment of the festival food you’ve come to expect with lemonade, shaved ice, pecans, kettle corn, gelato and more from over 17 food trucks and vendors. The renovation of the legendary Hotel Settles kicked off a decade-long revitalization effort the Big Spring Downtown Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places Like Joe Buck boarding a bus with his cowhide suitcase in the opening scenes of 1969’s Midnight Cowboy Big Spring still feels like a place where epic stories begin Who knows what the wind might kick up next If you did nothing else but spend a night at Hotel Settles A dust-colored brick building rising fifteen stories its glowing red rooftop sign visible for miles the crown jewel of Big Spring exemplifies the word “landmark.” The old gal had weathered the town’s highs and lows since she opened but everyone figured she’d reached the end of the road by 2006 when Big Spring native and Dallas entrepreneur G Brint Ryan paid $75,000 for what one resident called a “monument to obsolescence.” Ryan and his team evicted the pigeons and cleaned up years of neglect Then they restored the building to something close to its original look and reopened it Peek into the original birch-wood phone booths and then sink into a velvet chair or leather couch and imagine attending a big band dance in the ballroom or brushing up against guests such as Will Rogers and Herbert Hoover you’ll be met with views fit for a cattle baron.  The sign outside still says Dell’s Café, but this spare restaurant with the odd name of Neutral Ways serves fat egg-filled tacos and classic American breakfast plates in a diner-style room complete with red vinyl–topped chrome stools its curved limestone benches fanning out from the stage like ripples from a tossed stone Of the amphitheaters and band shells built by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and early 1940s this one is second in capacity only to Red Rocks Continue your educational journey during lunch at Local’s, a onetime school building down the street from the park that’s been repurposed as a deli white brick walls are enlivened by chalkboards and globes After lunch, fill up on the town’s more modern history at the Heritage Museum of Big Spring and cattle ranching (there’s an impressive array of mounted Longhorn horns) but you’ll also learn about the time when citizens launched a full-scale assault on unsightly weeds to lure the soon-to-be-built Texas Technological College (alas flip through a book filled with ephemera that speak to the trials of setting up shop in a frontier town such as this letter from an uncle to his nephew had taken up the liquor trade: “The business you are engaged in now can and will carry some dispositions to a disgraceful grave in an incredible short time and I can only wish you may be one of the very few who will escape the heated end.” Pop in at J Jayz Bar and Grill (across from the Train Car) for colorful cocktails and the kind of food—burgers Or head back to home base and enjoy a whiskey sour and chicken-fried steak from Settles Grill or the Pharmacy Bar & Parlor which serves select items from the full menu As in most small towns, Sunday is pretty quiet, so grab breakfast at the hotel and set out for more exploring. When locals tell you to go walk around “the mountain,” they’re talking about Scenic Mountain, and it’s at Big Spring State Park you can drive Park Road 8 to the top or hike a four-mile loop that winds through 382 acres of pristine redberry juniper At the northern end of the park is an overlook that offers more than just sweeping views of Big Spring: Etched in a limestone bluff that rises about two hundred feet above the city are three hundred–plus carvings many of which date from the late 1800s to the mid-1930s when members of the CCC laid road and quarried rock to build the park’s pavilion and headquarters Among the more intriguing carvings are a “horned head” believed to be Native American and the chiseled name of legendary Kentucky spelunker Floyd Collins who must have visited before his harrowing death in Sand Cave (now part of Mammoth Cave National Park) five years after delighting the world with the song “A Big Ball’s in Cowtown,” in 1949 opened this dance hall with his brother Ben His son Jody keeps the music going with his own Texas Cowboys in a space that hasn’t changed since Bob Wills played one of his last shows there I planned my visit to the Permian Basin so that I could take in a performance by the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra at the Municipal Auditorium, which has hosted everyone from José Greco to Elvis Presley 1955; an advertisement for the show promised “lots of clean fun and heaps of music.” At the grand Spanish Colonial Revival building it’s business in the back (home to city hall and various government offices) and a party in the front: The auditorium’s creaky seats hold 1,412 people under an arched ceiling and the soft glow of ornate lanterns I enjoyed a beautiful rendition of Camille Saint-Saëns’s The Carnival of the Animals conducted by the symphony’s new music director who studied violin in Brazil and also directs the orchestra at Angelo State University This article originally appeared in the April 2025 issue of Texas Monthly with the headline “Don’t Just Blow Through Big Spring.” Subscribe today Amazon's Big Spring Sale is a full week long The 2025 Amazon Big Spring Sale will end at 11:59 p.m Amazon hasn't announced its next major savings event at this point, but it will almost certainly host a sale over Memorial Day weekend in late May Our coverage for this event has officially ended here at CNET but these deals are up to date as of today with 10 hours of battery life and a quick charge that gives 2 hours of playtime in just 10 minutes Compact and lightweight with a built-in lanyard and AI-enhanced dual mics for clear calls they’re perfect for on-the-go listening This deal is only for Prime members though While many people use major Amazon sales to shop for big-ticket items like a new TV or laptop these sales also present a great opportunity to save on everyday essentials Whether you need a new charging cord or a water bottle the Big Spring Sale is a great time to save on smaller items too Not every deal under $25 on Amazon is worth buying during the sale but that's why our CNET team does the digging for you to make sure we're presenting only the best deals Amazon's second-ever Big Spring Sale has ended but this year That's a one-day extension compared to 2024's inaugural event giving shoppers extra time to score bargains You do not need a Prime subscription to shop the sale, but there are some Prime-exclusive deals in the mix. to paying monthly Omaha World Herald's Sam McKewon breaks down the Nebraska's spring game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Saturday LINCOLN — Somewhere during the 40 yards of Elijah Pritchett pulling a tractor across the Memorial Stadium turf Saturday Suddenly he was moving farm equipment while trying not to choke This was the football-adjacent “Husker Games” in front of a few thousand fans in April not a televised Big Ten showdown in October The transfer offensive lineman who’s been with Nebraska for a matter of months didn’t see a difference “I gotta beat the other man,” said Pritchett who teamed with fellow O-lineman Justin Evans to win the race “I was not losing no matter what the circumstances were.” 310-pound Pritchett was speaking publicly for the first time since arriving from Alabama in January After a winter of grueling mat drills and 15 spring practice the former five-star prospect talks and competes like a position leader he’s already becoming The biggest lesson after some time with The Pipeline Pritchett calls it “O-line pride.” Blockers are always together on the field “If you’re not playing to where the whole unit is playing or where we feel like we should be playing they’re going to bring you along whether you like it or not.” Nebraska’s offensive line confirmed this spring it added a pair of surefire starters in Pritchett and Notre Dame transfer Rocco Spindler even as injuries to returning veterans prevented a full preview of what the starting five could look like in late August While those older players healed and helped coach a wave of younger linemen continued to take repetitions in a process that may only start to bear fruit next season Among the biggest developments was the emergence of Evans — a longtime interior starter — as the clear next Husker center His performance has been good enough for unbridled optimism from offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen “He can be as good a center as exists in college football — I firmly believe that,” Holgorsen said Nebraska’s line will have 67 career starts between Pritchett (left tackle) Its top group could exceed 100 if sixth-year Husker Turner Corcoran — who spent the spring rehabbing an injury — claims right tackle Teddy Prochazka (11 starts) and Gunnar Gottula (nine) are also experienced edge blockers who have been limited during offseason workouts Lutovsky on Saturday blew through 25 bench-press reps of 225 pounds as part of the “Strongest Man” contest with a singular goal of helping his team win The Huskers overall and certainly the linemen have approached the grind differently They no longer must run or lift — they get to “They’ve been doing a great job of just accepting that and wanting to come along with us,” said Lutovsky a senior now fully looking the part himself at 6-6 and 320 pounds Spindler and Pritchett — both part of past College Football Playoff teams — have navigated shorter learning curves than many Spindler was coached by former Notre Dame O-line assistant Harry Hiestand who mentored current NU line coach Donovan Raiola when both were staffers with the Irish and the Chicago Bears Spindler — a clear vocal leader the likes of which Nebraska hasn’t had on the line since perhaps Tanner Farmer in 2018 — was notably among the first players to talk with media members in the spring “We’ve got to be an O-line-driven program,” Spindler said in March We have to handle our business and it will correlate to the rest of the team.” The rest of the O-line depth chart will come from younger and former celebrated recruiting wins like redshirt freshmen Grant Brix Preston Taumua and others in the 2024 class along with 2023s including Sam Sledge and Jason Maciejzcak Junior tackle Tyler Knaak is in the mix too who had drawn spring praise for his work as a tackle from coach Matt Rhule Raiola said each underclassman showed “flashes of greatness.” The position coach isn’t against rotating as many as eight linemen in a game if there’s no drop-off in production The difference from last year’s offense to now is Nebraska consistently executing the “simple Pritchett said the months ahead will be about finishing school and keeping the physical gains made Some linemen are planning summer training together — where there’s one Fans watch during the spring game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Saturday Nebraska head coach
