My husband and I recently spent almost a month exploring Germany, and three days of our trip were dedicated to its Black Forest
The Black Forest is said to have famously inspired many Grimms' fairy-tales
with its castle ruins and lush green landscape complete with swirling fog
it's a hiker's paradise with delicious cake and famous cuckoo clocks
Here's what we loved about our experience in the Black Forest — and two of the mistakes we made
Our first taste of fairy-tale magic was the epic hike to All Saints' Abbey
The trail starts at the parking lot for the Allerheiligen Waterfalls
past a farm and a seemingly out-of-place Romanesque sculpture
It was easy to imagine the structure that once stood here — and to dream of adventures our favorite fairy-tale heroes might encounter on a particularly foggy day here at the ruins
I loved that the hike took us high up a mountain for spectacular views of the valley
but the sour cherries and accompanying taste of the Kirschwasser (a brandy made from sour cherries) keep it from tasting too sweet
I'm more of a savory guy who enjoys his pork schnitzel
but the Black Forest cake ranks high on the list of things I ate while abroad
Baden-Baden is a spa town on the northern edge of the Black Forest
Visiting its Friedrichsbad spa was one of the most adventurous things we've ever done
we had to get completely naked with a bunch of tourists and locals in order to enjoy the steam rooms
Once we got over the initial strangeness of being nude with strangers
We also visited the Caracalla Spa next door
which seemed better for families: Everyone wears their swimsuits
but you still get to enjoy the thermal waters
Baden-Baden was a great starting point for our hike to the Hohenbaden Old Castle
The stunning ruins are on a mountainside and overlook Baden-Baden
It took us about an hour to hike from the city center to the castle
We went to the city of Triberg for two reasons: to see its famous cuckoo clocks and the waterfall
This was fine since we'd seen several waterfalls that morning during our hikes for free
and we would've had to pay to see the one near Triberg
we browsed the shops and saw some cuckoo clocks
we felt like this city inside the Black Forest was mostly a tourist trap with a lot of souvenir shops
It reminded us of shopping in Tennessee's Gatlinburg — definitely a fun time
but not quite the authentic German experience we were hoping for
We missed out on hiking southern certain trails and seeing Lake Titisee because our home base was in Baden-Baden
That made it challenging to see the southern end of the forest and still make it home before dark
we plan to stay in Freiburg im Breisgau to explore the southern region
(KRDO) – One person was airlifted to the hospital by Flight for Life after a three-vehicle crash on Wednesday
responded to a crash near Spiritwood Loop and Murphy Road where a passenger was reportedly trapped after a three-car crash
Crews arrived on scene to find one person pinned in the driver's seat
and were able to extricate them from the car
Black Forest Fire and Rescue said that one person involved in the crash was airlifted by Flight for Life
though it remains unclear whether that person was the one trapped in the vehicle
The other individuals were evaluated on-scene by medics
Black Forest Fire and Rescue shared a look at the airlift operations and the scene of the crash via Facebook:

Mendocino National Forest and Lake County District 5
plans to conduct prescribed fire operations in the Black Forest along Soda Bay Road
on the northeast side of Mount Konocti in Kelseyville
Pile burn operations are scheduled to start April 14 and may continue periodically through May 30
Burning will take place only when weather and fuel moisture allow for safe and successful burning
The prescribed fire is part of a shaded fuel break initiated in 2008 to protect communities
The project will remove hazardous fuels that could feed fires within this wildland-urban interface
Approximately 36 acres of undergrowth and small trees have been hand-thinned by firefighters and piled over the last three years
The operation aims to burn approximately 500 piles covering the entire shaded fuel break
encompasses approximately 242 acres of BLM-managed public lands and supports many plants and species as well as valuable cultural resources and an important watershed
The BLM is committed to keeping public landscapes healthy and productive
More information is available from the BLM Ukiah Field Office at 707-468-4000
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states
The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation
and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations

Efforts continue with firefighters from three different state and federal agencies to contain the Black Swamp Fire in the Croatan National Forest
Officials say due to a range of successful suppression tactics
Fish and Wildlife Service are currently assigned to the fire
firefighters placed large agricultural sprinklers to draw water from the No Name Canal
soaking deep into the soil to cool burning roots and soil
High volume pumps are being installed to aid suppression efforts
while a Black Hawk and two K-Max helicopters are also dropping water collected from the nearby Great Lake
Crews are patrolling containment lines in preparation to box in any potential spot fires that would cross over
with mop-up operations underway along Moccasin Lane
Forest Service stated the following in a release:
the National Forests in North Carolina today temporarily closed the Great Lake Boating Access Area and Sheep Ridge Wilderness Area
Black Swamp Road and the Black Swamp OHV area remain closed
the fire poses no risk to nearby communities; however
the public should continue to avoid closed areas

more than 20 students from the ‘TRACKS’ program at Home School Academy trekked into the Black Forest burn scar
the same area scorched by the 2013 wildfire
This charred stretch of forest is slowly coming back to life thanks to these Academy School District 20 middle schoolers
who are planting more than 100 trees as part of a wildfire recovery project funded by the Restoring Colorado’s Forests Fund
a forester with the Colorado State Forest Service
you center your seedling in the middle of it and then just push those to the ground,” he explained
Most of the students were just babies when the fire happened
they're making an impact on the future of this forest
“Having an opportunity to plant seedlings in an area that has been devastated by natural disaster in 2013 and then coming back 12 years later to affect future generations is just exciting,” said Keisha Hill
The students planted a mix of spruce and Ponderosa pine trees
and they’re putting the next generation trees in the ground,” said Gehrke
I actually helped plant some of these trees,'” said Carson
and I feel like it’s our duty to take care of it," said Carson
"We get a lot of how we survive from the Earth
so might as well help it when it needs help.”
Carson hopes the trees will grow into something meaningful for others and for the environment
“I hope that they'll bring joy to other people… and give them a will to try and protect it and keep it beautiful,” said Carson
He's also encouraging people to be mindful
saying even small actions can prevent devastating damage
“Make sure you put out your fires… just try your best to help the environment
because it's helped you a lot,” said Carson
It’s a chance to make a lasting difference
“The biggest takeaway for our kids is that they have power,” said Hill
“They have the power to affect the future in a positive way or in a negative way
and they're choosing to do it in a positive way that's going to be lasting for generations to come.”
(KOAA) — A shelter-in-place order was lifted for an area northeast of Colorado Springs on Tuesday
the following message was issued to people in the Black Forest area:
"The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has issued a SHELTER IN PLACE ORDER for 8700 Block Vollmer Rd due to LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY near 8725 Vollmer Rd.," part of the message issued on Peak Alerts reads
"SECURE your home/business and STAY AWAY from doors and windows

BLACK FOREST — It's a place for southern Colorado's "under-served" felines
"Any cat that just needs a soft place to land..
they're gonna find a home here," said Wild Blue Cats Outreach Director Sabrina Utter
which is home to both cats being made ready for adoption and cats that are better off in an outdoor environment
Utter said the Black Forest Fire came within a mile of the sanctuary's property
we didn't have an evacuation plan," said Utter
Utter said Wild Blue's volunteers came up with a detailed plan
She said it's a plan that assigns people to every main area of the sanctuary
with equipment ready to go that makes it easy for volunteers to catch the cats and get them to safety
One of those gadgets she called an "easy nabber."
"It's like a giant clam shell made of mesh
One of the unique parts about Wild Blue is its 100 by 200 foot fenced in an area known as Maya's Wildheart Village
It's currently home to 29 cats who are not meant to be in a home and can live their lives safely and comfortably
it can be very hard for volunteers or even firefighters to corral them in the event of an emergency
Utter said the best way to keep them safe is by cutting the netting to the enclosure
snip the fence in multiple places so that they can escape," she added
the best way to keep these guys safe in the event of fire
"The biggest challenge with adoption is education," she said
"Making 100% sure that person that (whoever) adopts them knows what the challenges are going to be."

Germany's Black Forest is defined by beautiful scenery
In the heart of Germany’s eclectic southwest, tucked against the French border, the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) may not have the celebrity status of neighboring Bavaria
Mercedes and Porsche automobiles and the cuckoo clock are just a few of the instantly recognizable symbols of this castle-dotted region
with affluent Stuttgart as its vibrant hub
The focus for most visitors is the Black Forest itself – a sprawling mass of spruce trees
tightly knit rural communities and sparkling lakes
stretching for 160km (99 miles) from north to south
It’s a place for adventure seekers and fans of slow travel
with plenty to keep the kids entertained away from their screens on a family outdoor holiday
This nine-day Black Forest itinerary takes you from Stuttgart through the Black Forest to the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee)
eat Black Forest gateau in Triberg and hang out with the students of Freiburg in front of the city’s medieval Münster
There are no airports inside the Black Forest, but Stuttgart Airport is the major international airport serving Baden-Württemberg state and the Black Forest region
S-Bahn trains and trams can get you from the airport to the center of Stuttgart in about 30 minutes.
For those traveling from elsewhere in Europe, fast trains connect Stuttgart to Paris and Strasbourg
arriving at Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof station in the center of the city – conveniently close to hotels and the sights.
A car is your best option for getting around in the Black Forest
especially if you want to drive along the Black Forest High Road
The main towns are well connected by train
but the sheer size of the Black Forest and the spread out nature of its attractions mean that you’ll rarely be traveling in a straight line.
Many hotels and apartments have on-site parking, but it’s always good to check ahead. If you do choose to travel by public transport, most hotels will give you a KONUS card when you check-in
allowing free travel on the entire regional public transport network
Comfortable shoes or trainers are fine for city stops in the Black Forest region all year round
but walking boots or trail shoes are useful for forest hikes
A cap or hat to keep the sun off your head is also essential.
rivers and water parks in southern Germany
bringing swimwear along is a good idea from late spring to early fall
with temperatures that fall well below 0°C (32°F)
How to spend the day: Stuttgart
the capital of Baden-Württemberg state and the Black Forest region
has a proud history of engineering and innovation
local inventors gave the world the automobile
Good places to stay include the budget-friendly a&o Stuttgart City, which offers affordable private rooms, dorms and easy access to public transport, and higher-end EmiLu Design Hotel
which was restored to its original baroque glory after a public referendum in 1957 rejected turning it into a hotel.
Deemed too small to be a suitable royal residence by the young Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg in 1746, the nearby Altes Schloss (Old Palace) now houses the Landesmuseum
where you can marvel at a 35,000-year-old flute or head underground to the royal crypt
For art lovers, the Staatsgalerie is a must-visit
This contemporary art gallery packs a punch
with modernist works by Monet and Picasso and classic paintings dating back to the 14th century
The gallery is part of Stuttgart’s cultural mile on Hauptstatter Strasse, which also includes the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg (History Museum of Baden-Württemberg), and the town’s historic Stadtpalais and Rathaus
Evening: Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a drink at one of the city’s Besenwirtschaft – friendly pop-up wine taverns
The atmosphere at these convivial watering holes is friendly and homely
generous pours and live music; a broom hung out the front signifies “We’re open.”
How to spend the day: Use day two to dig into Stuttgart’s motoring history, after breakfast at Netzer
a popular corner cafe with healthy brunch bowls
plenty of outdoor seating and fantastic coffee
Nothing is more synonymous with Stuttgart than the Porsche motor company
This luxury car manufacturer still operates from its original site in Zuffenhausen
just 15 minutes out of town by train.
Petrol-heads from around the world gather at the factory’s dedicated museum
which displays nearly 100 Porsche vehicles
a racing simulator and a comprehensive audio tour
you can even rent a Porsche for the day from the ticket desk
Across town in Bad Cannstatt, the Mercedes-Benz Museum celebrates the evolution of the “Merc” over 135 years
placing its vehicles in the context of world history
The collection is as impressive as it is vast – highlights include Gottlieb Daimler’s first internal combustion engine
the Mercedes-Benz once owned by Princess Diana and the world’s most expensive car – the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé.
The museum itself is an architectural marvel
with its double-helix design earning an entry in the Guinness World Records for the world’s biggest artificial tornado – a feature in the atrium designed to quickly suck out smoke in case of fire
Evening: Located in the spacious Schlossgarten, popular Biergarten im Schlossgarten has great local meals at low prices
Go from Stuttgart to Baden-Baden: The drive from Stuttgart to the spa town of Baden-Baden takes around 1¼ hours. The charming city of Heidelberg is a popular stop along the way if you have the extra time.
For accommodation, Hotel am Markt is a small family-run hotel offering package stays in Baden-Baden's bathhouse district. If your pockets are deep, there’s no better place to stop for a luxury spa getaway than the Brenners Park Hotel
How to spend the day: A member of Europe’s premier league of spa towns, fashionable, UNESCO-listed Baden-Baden is a swish art nouveau spa town, picturesquely located at the foot of the Black Forest’s spruce-cloaked hills. For travelers seeking wellness and rejuvenation, the historic Friedrichsbad bathhouse and the modern Caracalla Spa promise soothing soaks in curative thermal waters.
Temple-like Friedrichsbad is the more traditional of the two
with a 17-stage bathing regime that includes hot and cold thermal baths
it’s all done completely naked; more prudish travelers might want to head next door to Caracalla
whirlpools and steam rooms invite you to linger a little longer.
Evening: Ater dark, try your luck at the famed Casino Baden-Baden; with its ornate ceilings
The strict dress code requires men to wear a suit
and passports must be presented at the ticket desk
you can join a daytime guided tour in English to learn more about the casino’s secrets; participants get a free entry pass to return to play in the evening
How to spend the day: Take a second day in Baden-Baden to see more of the city sights. Bookend the day with stops at Maltes Hidden Kitchen
and a cozy spot for a gourmet dinner at night.
When you’re ready to explore, the green parklands of Lichtentaler Allee take you from grand hotels and museums to even grander theatres and festival halls
Take a stroll for 2.3km (1.4 miles) through the park to soak up the tranquillity, and stop in at the Museum Frieder Burda
a private collector’s gallery featuring more than 1000 modern artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries
explore the ruins of the free-to-visit Altes Schloss Hohenbaden castle at the top of the city
from where you can take in sweeping views and listen to the delicate notes of the castle's 4m-tall (13ft) wind harp.
Evening: If you don’t return to Maltes Hidden Kitchen, treat yourself to dinner at one of Baden-Baden’s gourmet restaurants. Set at the top of town, Nigrum features a moody interior and impressive set menus of modern international cuisine. Alternatively, try Rizzi
a lively and glam riverside restaurant presenting modern Asian fusion cooking at its best.
Go from Baden-Baden to Triberg: Drive for 1½ hours from Baden-Baden to Triberg at the heart of the Black Forest. If you have the budget, there are some stylish four-star stays in the area; Fritz Lauterbad near Freudenstadt is a sophisticated hotel with an outdoor pool and expansive forest views from all rooms, while Alpine-style Hotel Schlehdorn in tiny Altglashütten is perfect for a summer or winter escape
How to spend the day: Triberg is a busy little tourist town where cuckoo clocks outnumber inhabitants and Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest gateaux – a dark chocolate cake with cherries and Kirsch) is a staple
Triberg’s main street is kitsch but charming
with souvenir shops overflowing with wooden ornaments and clocks.
Take a break from the tourist vibe by visiting the Triberg Waterfalls (Triberger Wasserfälle)
Germany’s highest waterfall at 163m (535ft)
The entry ticket gets you access to over 2km (1.2 miles) of winding boardwalks and walking paths that offer beautiful views.
where twice-daily flight shows provide a chance to see owls and other birds of prey in action
Just out of town, two enormous timepieces compete for the title of “World’s Biggest Cuckoo Clock,” with both chirping every half hour. Stop in at the Rombach & Haas clock store in Schonach
where a collection of ultra-modern cuckoo clocks are on display and you can see master clockmakers at work.
Evening: Eating at a mountain hut is a quintessential Black Forest experience. Consider making the trip southwest from Triberg to Höfener Hütte
a chalet-like hut with good food and impressive views that can be reached by car or on foot
Explore the villages of the Black Forest: This is a day for experiencing more of the landscapes and traditions of the Black Forest
head out for breakfast in the picturesque town of Titisee
a quaint tourist village on the shores of the lake of the same name that has some good restaurants and interesting boutiques if you want to shop for Black Forest souvenirs.
How to spend your day: If you’re feeling active
devote the day to a walk in the Black Forest
The path up to the summit of the Belchen is a hike with everything – sweeping views
restaurants and even a cable car halfway up if you find the going hard and want to call it quits.
The 15km (9.3-mile) circular hike to the top of Belchen involves a fairly moderate ascent for the first half
then an easy downhill stretch after you reach the summit
and you can leave your car in the car park at the bottom of the hill
or catch the regional bus to the trailhead from Münstertal or Titisee train station.
If you prefer artistic endeavors, visit the Dorotheenhütte glass factory in Wolfach
a center for glass production since the 12th century
The factory shop has a big selection of glass ornaments and Christmas decorations
and you can join a short history tour or try your hand at glass-blowing and create your very own vase or bauble
Smoked ham is another long-standing Black Forest tradition, and you can learn about the process at Pfau Schinken in the village of Herzogsweiler
master butcher Frank Pfau hosts guided tours of the smokehouse and shares his secret recipes before giving you the chance to sample the house hams
Evening: Take the opportunity to sample some of the local tipples. Visit Rothaus in Grafenhausen to learn what makes this cult beer so special, or delve into the process of making great fruit schnapps at Emil Scheibel Schwarzwald-Brennerei in Kappelrodeck.
climb the 333 spiral steps up the Münster's tall spire; from here
you’ll be rewarded with dizzying views of the red-tiled rooftops and surrounding hills
And don’t miss paying a visit to Freiburg’s historic Rathaus
where you’ll find the coats of arms of Freiburg’s 12 sister cities at the entrance
the hill swarms with couples and groups of friends soaking up the last light
Join them under the chestnut trees in the beer garden
or check out the views from the 360-degree viewing tower.
Go from Freiburg to Lake Constance: The drive from Freiburg to Lake Constance (Bodensee) takes about two hours. Spend the night like a king or queen in a real castle at Schloss Hotel Wasserburg; despite the regal setting
Head out onto Lake Constance to explore the privately owned island of Mainau
It was purchased by Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden in 1853
and he immediately set to work transforming it into a lush Mediterranean garden
Mainau opened to the public in the early 20th century
and the “Island of Flowers” has been delighting botanists ever since.
so make a day of it to get your money’s worth
You can access the island by ferry from Konstanz or Meersburg
Tickets for Mainau can be purchased with your ferry ticket
Evening: After a day of sightseeing, grab dinner at Tolle Knoll
a Konstanz institution where potatoes take a starring role on the menu
Go to Meersburg: With so many lakeside towns vying for your attention, consider spending your last day exploring under-the-radar Meersburg, a patchwork of hillside vines, perky turrets, cobbled alleys and swimming spots on the eastern shore of the lake. A car ferry departs about every 15 minutes from Konstanz to Meersburg
Before you board the boat, Das Voglhaus in Konstanz has plenty of cozy nooks for enjoying a coffee or slice of cake. If you feel like stopping overnight in Meersburg, three-star Hotel Zum Schiff has a prime position on the lakeshore
How to spend the day: Dating back to the 7th century, Burg Meersburg takes center stage in Meersburg
with restored rooms giving insights into the town’s layered history
and a sense of what the castle looked like when it was in use.
You can also check out the Vineum
exploring Meersburg’s long history of viticulture; test your nose by sniffing sample aromas before heading to the bar downstairs to put your newly honed sense of smell to work at a wine tasting
For some fresh air, take in the panoramic views of the lake from the raised terrace of the Neues Schloss
then meander down to the lakeside promenade
the satirical Magische Säule (Magic Column) sculpture and inviting Weinstube (wine taverns)
where you can celebrate the completion of this Black Forest itinerary

most people share similar feelings about the community
“It’s so close knit," said Golden Pine Coffee Roasters Owner Ryan Wanner
“It's really got that small town vibe," said Resident Will Ferguson
there are some amenities he’d like to have close by
Facebook posts indicate Thrive Hive Pilates will be opening up in town across the street from the Chicken Coop along Black Forest Rd
The new studio is expected to open in April
"Having the local people will build it up,” Wanner said
Though Wanner says he commutes to the forest from Colorado Springs

he added it’s important the community continues to show its support to those that are open
“The biggest challenge that we have as small businesses
is convincing people to continue to shop with us when there is something else on the way to wherever they're going," Wanner said

Mulled wine and traditional gifts: Freiburg's Christmas market
glühwein and song: the charm of traditional festive markets in south-west Germany
In the depths of Germany's Black Forest lie some magical surprises
I discovered a Christmas market worthy of a German fairy tale
Entering the market at Ravenna Gorge
More than 40 stalls are framed by the steep hills of the forest and the 40m-high Höllental Railway viaduct
on which trains clatter by every 15 minutes or so
The smell of glühwein and roasting bratwurst fill the air
The best view of the market can be found on top of the Galgenbühl hill, behind hotel Hofgut Sternen
which has hosted such famous guests over the years as Goethe and Marie Antoinette
I head up there to watch the sun set behind the 12th-century St Oswald Chapel

Children were left spellbound by Santa's presence – and presents
I also finally succumbed to a heaped mound of kasëspatzle
from flammkuchen (a very thin sort-of pizza
where they share the stories and history of the sport in the region
it sprawls around the city's squares and cobbled alleyways
sprinkling some sparkle everywhere you look
We found mulled wine and traditional German foods
they serve traditional cuisine from Baden-Württemberg
The beef entrecôte with spätzle was a stand-out winter warmer
while the Black Forest gâteaux in a glass was the perfect sweet end
and shopped in the independent boutiques of the riverside quarter
We spent the final evening of our Christmas trip at the Alte Wache
a specialist wine shop and bar in a 300-year-old former guard station
As I enjoyed a glass of Baden pinot noir under the heaters outside
The Black Forest is the perfect place to get into the Christmas spirit

COLORADO SPRINGS — You're not the only one cold during this arctic front
is going the extra mile to keep your furry friends warm
and giving animals shorter outdoor breaks to keep everyone warm
Senior dogs and dogs with short fur are given special attention
as they're more vulnerable to the elements
"Safety is extremely important when it's so cold outside
One of the main things we're doing is keeping our dog door shut and locked—that helps prevent the wind and cold air from coming in," Says co-owner Megan Lundberg
We're also very careful to ensure they aren't outside for too long
especially senior dogs and those with shorter fur."
The dog resort is keeping its buildings between 66 and 68 degrees during the cold nights
There are also plenty of blankets to wrap the dogs in for extra warmth
BLACK FOREST, Colo. (KRDO) - At least 24 people have died after a string of wildfires sparked in the Los Angeles area
The destruction has brought fire danger to the forefront of many Coloradan's minds
Homeowners in Black Forest reached out to KRDO13 Investigates about a property that borders theirs
which they say is filled with dozens of acres of dead trees
They're concerned that the property is a perfect source of fuel for a wildfire
The 42-acre property is located at 9050 Burgess Road
which extends about a mile up the road towards Hardin Road
That's where Rick Christie and his wife have lived for six years
He can see the Burgess Road property from his back deck
Christie says he's watched over the course of the last two years as the wooded area has become infested with Mountain Pine Beetles
which has caused them to rot and fall over
That same area seen here on the Colorado State Forest Service's Forest Health map in 2023
as having 41 acres of Mountain Pine Beetle infection
It now has Christie concerned about the 'tinder box' butting up agains his backyard
which is especially worrisome as Hardin Road residents were met face to face with the Black Forest Fire in 2013
Christie says he bought the property well after the fire torched through the area
but he was told that the wildfire had spread right up to his back deck
while leaving behind blackened bark on the trees in his yard
Now he wants to know what can be done to make sure this property is taken care of
"There's got to be something that we can do
just to relieve the nervousness that we have." he stated
initially pondering whether the county could do something to mitigate the risk
told KRDO13 Investigates that they have no jurisdiction over private properties
"El Paso County has no enforcement mechanism specifically for the bark beetle
or picking up dead wood off of private property
The Colorado State Forest Service says that the beetle is a native species that will alter forests but not destroy them
They play a part in helping to naturally thin forests out
preventing even greater problems from happening during potential wildfires."
An El Paso County spokesperson did suggest that a complaint could be filed with the County's code enforcement team
to at least put the issue in front of them and see what they could look into
which is stationed just over a mile away down the road from the controversial property
tells KRDO13 Investigates they were not specifically aware of the 42-acre parcel and the swath of dead trees on it
One of their wild-land crew members explained
that they are not allowed to go onto private property to do mitigation
nor do they have the manpower to send crews to do mitigation for people's property
he says he considered taking legal action against the property owner due to what he and several neighbors along Hardin Road alleged has been a reckless spread of the Mountain Pine Beetle from the neglected property
costing them tens of thousands of dollars to remove dozens of dead trees from their yards
due to the cost for litigation and the uncertainty he'd be able to definitively prove the neglect of the property
It's a property that Christie says has remained undeveloped
since he says it was bought five years ago
The El Paso County Assessor's database shows that the property is owned by "Rabah Holdings LLC"
which included a mailing address for a law firm in Colorado Springs
KRDO13 Investigates called that firm to ask about their client
The firm stated that they were no longer a registered agent with Rabah Holdings LLC as of November 6
and instead provided an Organization ID# for them through the Colorado Secretary of State
an entity with that same name was found in the Wyoming Secretary of State database
The mailing address for the LLC was to a P.O Box in Dubai
They were most recently registered with a Personal Injury firm in Cheyenne
KRDO13 Investigates is still working to get in touch with the firm Tuesday night
as well as an email for a name attached to the 2025 renewal form for the LLC

newly paved roads or on the Colorado Springs website where it says “project finished," for backyard Farm Shop Owner Theda Stone
she’s already noticed a shift since Black Forest Road expanded
“I’ve been living in Black Forest for 15 years," said Stone
“We see people that are just probably going through to get closer to (Highway) 83 or to the interstate
Stone added increased traffic is a concern among residents
“Traffic is a concern for locals in the area
"People do not tend to follow the speed limits.”
General Manager Sean Schickler said its a similar story
which also has a barbecue joint on the inside
and benefits from the additional traffic along Black Forest Road
constantly adjusting our margins," said Schickler
“We've been here through the thick and thin of all of it.”
Schickler said the increased traffic along Black Forest Road has helped keep this stop locally run
“Once construction is rolling and so many new people are moving into the area
we see an increase at least 40% for gross sales,” said Schickler
According to the City of Colorado Springs website
there are potential plans to make Black Forest Road four lanes all the way up to Old Ranch Road
An El Paso County Sheriff's Office investigation report obtained by The Gazette shows law enforcement investigated multiple incidents of former Black Forest Fire Protection District Chief P.J
Langmaid allegedly choking firefighters under his command
a Sheriff's Office Major Crimes unit detective contacted multiple current and former employees of the fire district on the far north side of El Paso County who said the former chief put them in headlocks
One firefighter said Langmaid choked him on three separate occasions
The report sheds light on an ongoing set of investigations by the fire district's board of directors that have resulted in Langmaid's firing
the resignation of a deputy chief and the monthslong paid leave of another employee
The investigations and discussion on personnel matters are not open to the public; neither was the reason for Langmaid's separation from the district
two other Black Forest firefighters remained under investigation from a third-party independent investigator retained by the Black Forest Fire Protection District Board of Directors
The two employees were placed on paid leave in July
Both Deputy Chief Chris Piepenburg and Training Capt. Mike Torres previously told The Gazette they felt retaliated against by the board for reporting the behavior of Langmaid
Piepenburg has since submitted his resignation from the district
who said on Friday he would attend an executive meeting with the board on Saturday
said he maintains his position that the investigation against him is retaliation
"There are people there who have power and are a little upset by what I did," he said
While some interviewed for the report considered the actions of the chief "horseplay" and within the realm of normal behavior among firefighters
One administrative officer of the district said that Langmaid had made a "uneasy" work environment with statements overheard like
"I'm not above violence," and “If they get off the reservation
I will hunt them down and bring them back." Several of those interviewed expressed concerns of retaliation from Langmaid for speaking out
The report did not result in criminal charges for Langmaid
who was fired from the district last month after the board concluded its own investigation into the chief
"This case is closed as non-criminal; although it could be viewed as inappropriate it appears the firehouse has created an environment of accepting the behavior as horseplay and no one wanted to press charges the allegations do not rise to a criminal level," read the report
The board has since appointed Colorado Springs Fire Department Battalion Chief Josh Bartlett as interim chief
While Torres said he felt confident the investigation would eventually clear him
he said he felt uncomfortable about the possibility of going back to work at the district after an extended leave

BLACK FOREST — From giant astronauts to ephemeral
Born in the Black Forest and having returned as of 2022 following decades of artistic endeavors
Patrick Shearn is the creative director and the creative force driving Poetic Kinetics
an art studio that creates large-scale kinetic installations that have been featured in multiple countries and across the states
Before diving into the wide world of enormous art installations, Patrick worked in visual effects in the film industry (working on some titles you'll recognize)
Patrick recounts that he created a nearly 100-ft tall
kinetic flower for Burning Man; the gargantuan flora was situated around/on top of an aerial boom lift
Patrick was approached about constructing immense puppets for a performance that would run alongside (and on-site) the 2008 Olympics in Beijing
"They had this idea of a terracotta warrior and a girl puppet show," commented Patrick
"and the terracotta warrior was 26 feet tall and supported by a crane you'd see building an apartment complex."
These two installations are what Patrick points to as the proper starting point for what became Poetic Kinetics
"That really launched Poetic Kinetics," stated Strategy Director Marnie Sehayek
"and made Patrick realize that he could make a living and a life out of doing..
just pushing the envelope and taking it there."
Patrick began developing his team and creating even more colossal art pieces; these installations run the gamut from an astronaut the size of a blimp to immense butterflies
"We've done so many different things," stated shop manager
flowing skynet that we've put up all over the world."
The skynets are vast (thousands of square feet)
undulating rivers that seemingly flow across the sky
their mesmeric movement derived by gusts of wind; following Patrick's first skynet installation in 2016
his world changed forever and opened to vast and myriad opportunities
The largest of the skynet installations to date was dubbed "Firebird Descent"; the temporary display was situated in St
Russia in 2017 and spanned 32,000 square ft AND could be seen from space
suspended in Berlin and dubbed "Visions in Motion," holds a special place in Patrick's heart due to its message of unity
As his studio has made leaps and bounds across the wild geometries of creativity and the very real geographies of our world
taking on more artisans and fabricators to keep up with the increasing demand for this very unique brand of art
I can't do it all by myself," commented Patrick
"we have a team that's very committed and participatory and takes ownership in the projects
and it's very important to me that it's a group effort."
the studio has been designing and fabricating a number of steel trees with colorful
acryllic boughs that catch the light and illuminate their surroundings in various hues; many of these seemingly living constructs are slated to tour botanical gardens across the country in what Patrick has dubbed as the "Enchanted Tree Tour."
this time taking the form of aspens (ranging in height from 20 to 30 feet tall)
are headed to Denver as a part of the ongoing 16th Street Mall renovations with a planned install of spring 2025
according to Denver's Public Art Program administration
Patrick and his team are just hoping to engage the senses of joy and wonder in those that view their kinetic wonders
"We don't want to take life seriously," commented Desiree Barlow
who is married to Patrick while also working as Poetic Kinetic's studio/new business director
"we want to have fun and we want to share that fun
walk away happy and they walk away excited and they walk away playful."
"and if I can get people to sort of engage their child spirit
