252 CommentsLuton Town's previous relegation was perhaps forgivable
the Hatters were far from the only side in recent times to find the jump up from the Championship to the Premier League too big a step to make
But there will be far less understanding about their second successive relegation a year later, this time to League One, following a disastrous performance and 5-3 defeat at West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the season
Luton became just the fourth club in the Premier League era to experience successive relegations after a season in the top flight
Supporters began to vent their frustrations as the goals flew in at The Hawthorns and it became evident they were not going to witness the sort of heroic performance required to save themselves from relegation
it was the total opposite as they went down with more of a whimper
sparking an unsurprising reaction when their demotion was confirmed at full-time
including boos and some fans questioning whether the players' were fit to wear the shirt
Boss Matt Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio: "Sorry to our supporters for travelling up and down the country
We understand their disappointment and anger right now
because we needed a big performance today and we didn't deliver one
We have to understand there's going be a reaction off the back of it."
Luton fans were left dejected after their team's second successive relegation
Three successive wins against Derby County
Bristol City and Coventry City in the second half of April had revived Luton's hopes of staying up
Coming out of it they were outside of the relegation zone by a point with their fate in their hands on the season's last day
against opponents with nothing to play for in West Brom
to produce a performance like the one delivered at The Hawthorns and for their form to totally desert them
Luton had lost just once in nine Championship games heading into the final day
They had also conceded three goals in a game just once since a 3-2 defeat at Oxford United on 21 January and that was a 4-0 defeat at automatically promoted Burnley in March
No wonder Bloomfield said of their awfully-timed collapse: "I don't know [where that display came from]
"We've been incredibly resilient in the last two months to really shore up at the back and unfortunately today it just wasn't there
"We've done so well to drag ourselves back into this position and to fall at the final hurdle was particularly painful for everybody involved."
Carlton Morris consoles Jordan Clark after Luton's relegation was confirmed
Bloomfield is the man who has overseen their relegation but the rot had already set in by the time he was appointed in January
given "a generation of Luton Town supporters the greatest day of their lives" when he led them to the Premier League via the play-offs against Coventry in 2022-23
Many more unforgettable occasions followed in their first top-flight season since 1992
even if Luton were ultimately unable to defy the odds and stay up
Luton gave Edwards as much time as they could
to turn things around when a push for an instant return to the Premier League did not materialise as it had for the two sides they came down with
they had little choice other than to act after accepting their season had "clearly not progressed as anticipated"
That was particularly the case away from home
Luton won just one and lost 11 of their first 13 Championship games on the road this season
Four successive league defeats proved the final straw, leading to Edwards' reluctant departure by mutual agreement on 9 January.
Luton were 20th in the Championship table at the time of Edwards' departure
Despite that perilous position, Bloomfield was tempted enough by the challenge of succeeding Edwards to leave Wycombe midway through their League One promotion push
They were just two points off top spot when he changed clubs
While he has been unable to preserve Luton's Championship status
Wycombe have made the League One play-offs
creating the prospect of his former club swapping divisions with his current one once all is said and done in 2024-25
But as the pain and reality of Luton's relegation began to sink in
defiant Bloomfield's thoughts were instead beginning to turn to steering the club back in the right direction again
They are no strangers to climbing the leagues
Their one-season stay in the Premier League under Edwards was the culmination of an incredible 10-year rise from the National League
"This club has to bounce back and we will," Bloomfield said
we have to stick together because that's what this club is about and we'll find a way."

Matt Bloomfield began his managerial career with Colchester United
Luton Town boss Matt Bloomfield has told his team to go out and "complete the job" as they look to avoid relegation in their final game of the season
A three-match winning run has lifted the Hatters out of the Championship's bottom three heading into Saturday's trip to West Bromwich Albion
And they just need to match or better Hull City's result at Portsmouth to make certain of remaining in the second tier in 2025-26
"I'm looking forward to it - this is the reason why I wanted to become a manager," a smiling Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio
"Obviously you want to be at the other end of the table fighting but we're really proud of the way it's [their form] been turned and we want to complete the job and I'm relishing the opportunity to do so."
Luton's focus on survival scrap before stadium move
Championship: Who needs what on the final day
Bloomfield said that when teams have momentum
"We feel we've had it for a little while now
so it's about focusing on the performance
focusing on the job and using the psychological benefits from the run of form we've been in - but none of that counts if we don't perform," he continued
"When the season is done and dusted we can sit back and assess
and analyse what we've done and what we haven't done
what's gone particularly well for us and what we need to do better
that have needed a high level of resilience
"But they are characteristics that a lifetime in this industry gives you
And they are absolutely pivotal to try to create an environment to turn around the situation we needed to turn around."
Bloomfield moved from League One club Wycombe Wanderers on 14 January to become Luton boss
who had departed by mutual consent five days earlier
they had just lost four successive games and were 20th in the Championship
just two points above the relegation places
They soon slipped into the bottom three and though they have only won six games of Bloomfield's 19 in charge
their recent run of form has been timely and they have not conceded more than one goal in any of their past nine games
"Matt Bloomfield will keep them steady," former Luton boss David Pleat told BBC Three Counties Radio
"They'll have enough self belief
they know the whole town and county of Bedfordshire is behind them
stick their chests out and give it everything
"West Brom can't go [up or down]
they haven't got an appointed manager at the moment
so there's a lot of things you can point in favour (of Luton)
You have to go with a very positive mindset and I'm sure they will do."
Luton will have midfielder Liam Walsh available after he won his appeal against his sending-off against Coventry
which would have resulted in a five-match ban if it had been upheld
It was the third time Walsh has been sent off this season and Bloomfield said they could not afford any red cards against West Brom
"He's at his best when he plays with an edge," Bloomfield said of Walsh
he tackles and drops on second balls - we've got to be careful not to make him too passive and we don't have the same player
"He's been in great form recently and that's the Walsh we need on the pitch against West Brom."

Meldrum said that under the National Fire Protection Association’s guide for fire investigations
an incendiary fire is one set under circumstances where the person setting it knows it should not be ignited and has knowledge of the potential consequences
The building where the fire started was demolished
and Halifax Regional Municipality said April 3 that the property owner will demolish the two remaining buildings on the site
The municipality has said there is also a demolition permit on file for the former St

which has also sat abandoned for some time and where there have been several fires over the past year
That includes one last month at which firefighters went inside to remove a person who was in the building at the time

Graduate Spotlight: From grit to greatness
Daniela Vidal is using every opportunity to build a future beyond the field – and lift others with her
Posted in: Homepage News, University
This story is part of a series celebrating Montclair State University’s Spring Commencement 2025 graduates – students who embody the University’s mission to broaden access to exceptional learning opportunities and contribute to the common good
she credits the sport with teaching her grit – the mindset that defines her approach to life
keep on going until it happens,” says Vidal
“I’m 100% sure I got that from softball.”
And if there is any word that describes her, grit is it. As a McNair Scholar
Vidal faced the responsibilities and pressures of college life with resilience and gratitude
But that worldview wasn’t softball’s only gift
“Softball’s the reason why I came to college,” says Vidal
who enrolled in Bloomfield College of Montclair State University in 2021 with an athletic scholarship
“I didn’t have to pay much to come to college
choosing Business Administration as a major felt like a natural fit
I saw my grandpa crunching numbers with his calculator,” Vidal recalls
But balancing her coursework with the demands of being a student-athlete was far from easy
“I was late to practice all the time,” she remembers
That’s when Vidal found her first of many mentors: Phil Delgado
her former softball coach whose tough love got her back on track
“My coach actually pulled me aside and told me ‘you just need to prioritize,’” she recalls
Vidal went on to achieve 100 hits as a junior and started every game throughout her college career – all while balancing two academic concentrations
she led the Bloomfield softball team as a captain
“This year I was telling the freshmen – from the jump
from the first day they came – don’t be late
Her journey on the field taught her discipline – but it was off the field where she discovered how much she loved helping others grow
Vidal’s passion for helping others sparked in 2022, when she worked as a counselor at the Boys & Girls Club
She loved taking the kids outside for games – often getting so caught up in a game of wiffleball that they’d run past their scheduled time
she realized that she loved being a positive influence on the kids
That desire to help others led to her peer financial consulting role – using her gift for numbers to help fellow students overcome their fear of managing money
“A lot of people are scared of their finances – scared of losing power over their finances,” says Vidal
“I wanted to let people know that it’s a common fear
Her sophomore year, Vidal received an email from the McNair Scholars Program and at first dismissed it as a scam
But a conversation with Bloomfield’s McNair Scholars program director
“I never knew a PhD was for me,” Vidal admits
‘We’ll help you on your PhD journey,’ I was like
And I think this program is going to help me do it.”
While the McNair Program gave Vidal the tools to thrive academically
some of her most meaningful support came from unexpected places
‘Study for it or you’re going to fail.’ I needed that.” He also coached her through job interviews
asking her hard questions and helping her prepare
Vidal credits her growth to the tough love of the people who believed in her – from her softball coaches to her McNair mentors – and who pushed her to believe in herself
she will earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with two concentrations – Marketing and Finance
she’ll wear a picture of herself and her grandfather with the words
It’s a tribute to the grandfather who instilled in her both a love of numbers and the grit she needed to succeed
After graduation, Vidal will begin working full time at BNY Pershing
the division of BNY Mellon where she interned in the summer of 2024
Her next goal is to combine her passion for finance with her budding interest in law
After being accepted to more than six graduate programs, she chose the University of New Haven’s Cyber Threat Intelligence and Financial Crimes Investigations online master’s program – the only one of its kind in the United States
Vidal hopes to one day coach girls in softball – passing down the confidence
“Because sports did such a big thing in my life
The University will celebrate its graduates at Commencement exercises on Wednesday

It’s not uncommon for autistic children to wander away from home
But experts are speaking out about efforts to keep kids inside after the Detroit Free Press revealed preliminary police findings about a West Bloomfield Township fire in which three children were later declared dead
Fire and police investigations remain underway, but search warrant affidavits issued in the days after the Feb. 2 fire show the parents of Hannah, Jeremiah and Jacob Oliora told police that their middle child was diagnosed as autistic
was nonverbal and had a habit of leaving the house unannounced
So, the parents placed a lock on the inside of the front door
put the key to leave in a lockbox that only they and the eldest child could access
The eldest of the three teenage and preteen children told 911 they couldn’t get out of the house during the fire and one child was found behind the front door
Police say they have since learned additional information “including about the measures the parents took to keep their developmentally disabled children safe” that “appear to have been taken at the recommendation of knowledgeable experts.” They asked the public not to cast judgment without all of the details and with work still ongoing to determine official causes
Parents of children with autism are between a rock and hard place trying to make decisions about the best way to keep their kids safe, confirmed Lori McIlwain, cofounder of the nonprofit National Autism Association.

It's called "elopement," and it's when children or even vulnerable adults leave the care of a responsible person or safe area
Data shows serious risks with death by drowning or traffic injury when they do
And McIlwain noted her own child with autism eloped from schools that avoid locks on certain doors due to fire safety
“This gets to be such a gray area because for so many families the greater risk is elopement,” she said
“And it's difficult to give them advice when you're trying to keep the child from getting out of the house.”
There are options and free resources available
Last year was the deadliest year recorded for children with autism who wandered
escaped or eloped from the safety of a responsible adult
Her organization has tracked this data since the mid-2000s
The group determined 82 children with autism died in 2024 amid an elopement, about double from the prior year, she said. Of those, 75 drowned
and McIlwain said the figures are likely low
Kids with autism have been found to elope or wander away more frequently than unaffected siblings and do it for reasons including enjoyment, to explore, and sometimes to avoid uncomfortable stimuli, according to a 2012 survey cited by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nearly half of youths with autism spectrum disorder attempted to elope at least once after age 4
the survey found 24% were in danger of drowning and 65% were in danger of traffic injury
a study from Columbia University found children with autism are 160 times as likely to die from drowning as other children
There are also concerns about autistic children with limited communication skills who elope and encounter police, as miscommunication can lead to escalation, USA TODAY reports.
Some children with autism try to get out of the house so frequently
their parents sleep on a couch pulled in front of the door
hoping to slow their kid’s run when they do get out
One family even put a lock on their dog door to prevent their child from leaving
The child still got out when it was unlocked for just a few brief moments
felt the need to nail and drill windows and doors closed
but a former fire marshal who is also the father of a child with autism said people need to understand that fires spread quickly
a fire can overtake a room to the extent that even a firefighter in full gear can’t survive
who spent about 20 years as a deputy state fire marshal in Minnesota
And most people actually die of the smoke inhalation
you just don't have time to grab a key before you're overtaken,” he said
“And that's where I teach now about having sprinklers
there's a perception out there that ‘Firefighters will be there to save me if there's a fire in my house.’

Some families put locks on their child’s bedroom doors because at night they can be at risk of wandering the house getting into medicine or knives
But safety planning has to be a part of that
including discussions about placing keys around a caregiver’s neck or otherwise making them immediately accessible
Swanson emphasized his concern with having to get a key out
People think they can get a key out in time to escape
it can take time for your body to react and realize what’s happening
“You’re losing valuable time in those situations,” he said
It’s something parents wrestle with every day
and a lock should not be a one-and-done solution
but the goal is to provide a child who is eloping with enough support
and skills that a lock will no longer be needed
Professional services can help address the behavioral needs behind elopement, said Erik Gallery, director of statewide access and early identification at the Autism Alliance of Michigan
whether it's based around something that that person is trying to access
… So we want to ensure that their needs are being met
and they have an appropriate communication system that's been established so that if it is a matter of access
they can communicate what that is rather than engaging in the elopement.”
Gallery said autism isn’t the same for everyone and he couldn’t confidently say a locking system would never be warranted
he takes a top-down approach looking first at the least restrictive options
The Autism Alliance of Michigan has a scholarship program to give away GPS trackers that can alert parents when their kids leave the property and alert first responders if they leave the area
The trackers are available in different styles
depending on what works best for an individual child

Another resource: The alliance has a free service called MiNavigator that can help connect families with local service providers
including behavior analysts who can help make safety plans specific to a family’s needs
Navigators can also help direct families to make sure the financial aspect of that is covered
Stop signs placed at entrances can give children enough time to reconsider an impulse or be stopped
Families should also familiarize neighbors with their child
their speaking status and what to do if they see them out alone
This could even include giving neighbors a photo of their child with instructions on the back
Door and window alarms can be cost prohibitive, but the National Autism Association gives away free alarms to families
“We recommend door and window alarms and adequate locks,” she said
I mean locks that can be out of reach of the child but doesn't go so far as to create a safety hazard.”
health agencies and others to help families finance better security systems for families with autistic children
“To help pay for security systems with more robust features that can help them keep their child safe so that (families) don't have to take extreme measures,” she said
How to prepare in case of emergencyHomes need to have multiple smoke alarms
She recommends having them in every room in the house
especially inside and outside of where a child with autism sleeps
It did not appear there were working smoke alarms in the West Bloomfield home where the Oliora children lived
Multiple experts including Gallery and Johnson-Hooper recommended families create safety plans and repeatedly practice what to do in emergencies
Several also discussed developing “social stories,” with illustrated guides showing their kids what a situation will look like and what to do
Multiple also discussed connecting with local police and fire departments directly
And Bruce Ferguson, a former Dewitt police chief who has a nonverbal daughter with autism and is on the board of directors for Autism Support of Michigan, said families need plans A
and C if they are doing something special in their household to keep an eloping child inside
That means training siblings on how to get out or how to break a window
telling those neighbors which window is the room to your special needs child
or putting a sticker on your window to let firefighters know that room
“I can't fault the parents for trying to save their child,” he said
“It’s just when you're living that situation and you're every day — every day — you're hoping and praying that they don't elope and get hurt … people shouldn’t be afraid to reach out to a second set of eyes to evaluate what they're doing
“But you’re just — you're inundated with anxiety
… It's just that you need to do that little extra.”
(WXYZ) — Car thefts have been rising steadily across Oakland County for years
but now West Bloomfield police say criminals are using increasingly advanced technology to get away with your vehicle
Police say they're using a tool called a ProPad
a legitimate locksmith device that can be used to clone key fobs and program new ones
The warning comes after a car theft early Friday morning involving a well-known member of the community
says she watched thieves steal her vehicle right out of her driveway around 2:30 a.m
“I watched somebody drive off with my car,” Rinaldi told 7 News Detroit
She said she initially thought she was hearing an Amazon delivery when a white Dodge Charger pulled up to her home
‘wait… what’s going on?’ And I see a young male
I’m yelling ‘hey!’ and then I hear a male voice from the Charger shouting ‘Let’s go
the suspects drove off with both the Charger and Rinaldi’s Suburban
her primary vehicle for transporting rescued dogs
She says West Bloomfield police arrived almost immediately after
using traffic and street cameras to track the suspects’ movements
Deputy Police Chief Scott Mong said it’s part of a troubling trend
“We’ve had three of these in the last two weeks,” Mong said
“It’s called a ProPad.” He explained that the ProPad is designed to help locksmiths program keys
but thieves are using it to gain access to vehicles parked in driveways
and returning later at night to drive them away
Rinaldi’s SUV was involved in a police chase that went through Eastpointe and ended in Detroit
Rinaldi says she’s just relieved the individuals responsible have been caught

UPDATE: Experts weigh in on keeping autistic kids safe after West Bloomfield fatal house fire
A nonverbal child with autism kept leaving his home unannounced
His dad even spotted him trying to crawl out of a second-story window
the parents put a lock on the inside of their front door
put the key to leave in a lockbox and installed window locks
That child and his siblings were later pronounced dead after one told 911 they couldn’t get out during a Feb. 2 fire at their West Bloomfield home.
And one of the kids was found behind the front door
according to court records newly obtained by the Free Press
Exact details on the fire and deaths of 16-year-old Hannah
14-year-old Jeremiah and 12-year-old Jacob Oliora have not been released
but search warrant affidavits obtained by the Free Press are shedding new light on the police and fire investigations
3 police interview with the children’s parents and details passed along from firefighters who responded to the scene at the white
Police used that information as part of their probable cause argument to get a magistrate to sign off on their Feb
4 search of the home to look for the cause of the fire and any evidence of a crime
Deputy West Bloomfield Police Chief Scott Mong called the deaths a “tragedy” and said that since the search warrant affidavits were written
officials have obtained additional information “including about the measures the parents took to keep their developmentally disabled children safe.”
“These measures appear to have been taken at the recommendation of knowledgeable experts,” he said
The investigation is ongoing and the results will be released when it is complete
and that we all avoid making a judgment about the children’s parents without all of the relevant information,” he said
A parent of the children reached by phone Monday said they could not speak about them and the line disconnected
Further attempts to give the parents a chance to comment were not returned
The West Bloomfield fire marshal said this week that he could not yet comment on any determinations surrounding the cause or origin of the fire
Official causes of the deaths have not been released by medical examiner offices
both were working Sunday when the fire happened
according to the synopsis of what they told police
for their respective shifts — nursing for Liz and DoorDash deliveries for Don
Hannah told him that she would start cooking hamburgers for herself and her younger brothers
He had a few more DoorDash stops left and then would return home
“There’s a fire in our house!” she told the 911 dispatcher
Locks and Children’s Protective ServicesBesides Don and Liz Oliora
Hannah was the only other person who had access to the key to unlock the front door from the inside
They kept it in a lockbox in the home near the garage
Wandering is not uncommon for children with autism
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the nonprofit Autism Speaks have pointed to a 2012 survey that found nearly half of youths with autism spectrum disorder wandered away at least once after age 4 and did so more frequently than unaffected siblings
The children who did so did it for enjoyment
and sometimes to avoid uncomfortable stimuli
There were numerous close calls with drowning or traffic reported in the survey
Police had prior contact with the West Bloomfield family in connection to a wandering child
police got a call for a possibly lost 9-year-old child in the area
according to a West Bloomfield police report tied to the address and obtained through the Freedom of Information Act

including the child’s name and his connection to the other person in the report
were redacted — blacked out — so they could not be viewed
But the report showed someone called to say a child was possibly lost about 10:45 a.m
the child’s father had caught up with them
The redacted reports indicate that police were told the child had run out of a back door
and the responding officer told dispatchers to make note of a “condition” at an address
police were called to the neighborhood for a small boy walking in the roadway

Police found a 10-year-old boy with no socks
shoes or coat on and took him to the police station
according to the redacted police report for that incident
Police used a tablet the boy had and found a phone number to call his dad
A sergeant also drove out to find a family member of the child in person and found a front door standing wide open
A sergeant knocked on the door for several minutes before going in
Children’s Protective Services was contacted
firefighters forced their way through the front door
West Bloomfield Fire Marshall Byron Turnquist previously said
Firefighters could hear the ignitor of the gas stove clicking
They pulled Hannah, Jeremiah and Jacob Oliora from the home as neighbors watched
Those neighbors later told the Free Press how they tried to save the kids themselves
how the parents of the kids collapsed in grief when they arrived home
A possible origin of the fire was spotted in the home’s living room when Turnquist arrived at the scene
There were burn patterns between a couch and a wall
but there was heavy smoke and heat throughout the home
Two children were found on the first floor
Turnquist also previously said there appeared to be no working smoke alarms in the house
He urged the public to check their own and plan multiple ways to escape in an emergency
The death of the youngest of the three children
was preliminarily deemed to be an accident due to smoke and soot inhalation
The other children’s autopsies were scheduled for the same day as the search
The records also indicate police took two key sets from a dresser drawer in a first-floor guest room and keys from a ground-floor office
A Bloomfield man faces eight felony charges related to child sex crimes
was arrested April 25 and jailed in the San Juan County Detention Center
Beattie is charged with four counts of first-degree felony criminal sexual penetration of a minor under the age of 13
three counts of second-degree felony criminal sexual contact of a child
third-degree felony child abuse and a misdemeanor unlawful exhibition of motion pictures to minors
The charges are in connection to two cases involving two female children
Bloomfield Police learned of the first case Aug
when they were called to a home in the 400 block of East Cedar Avenue
who confided in her friend that she was “being sexually assaulted,” by Beattie
according to the affidavit for arrest warrant
the girl said the abuse began when she was 11 years old
starting with “touching” and escalated to more aggressive behavior
until she was allegedly “raped” multiple times by Beattie
The 15-year-old also stated that Beattie at one time reportedly “threw a trash can” at her when she refused him
he allegedly held a gun to his head and told the girl “if it was that bad” for her to “grab the gun and shoot him,” the affidavit states
Beattie threatened to kill the girl and her mother if she told anyone about the abuse
her aunt and her cousin,” if she told on him
Beattie allegedly sexually assaulted her from September to February 2024 at home in the 300 hundred block of East Cedar Avenue in Bloomfield
The abuse stopped when the girl and her family moved
A preliminary hearing for both cases will be at 8:30 a.m

– The Bloomfield School Board placed the district superintendent
on administrative leave at Monday’s school board meeting
questioning the decision made by the board
because the stake of all our students is at risk
and I just want the best for all the students in the whole district,” said Brooke Nelson
They want to know why the school board decided to remove Summers from his position after only about a year on the job
“They didn’t have any good accusations against him
“ They haven’t given us any answers
and that’s what we were kind of just in the commons for this morning
Summers has done a lot for the district since he took on the role
“Just most of our staff and everybody support our superintendent
and we feel like they just did it so abruptly and didn’t try to explain to the public anything
So we just want answers,” Nelson said.
