After the Hoosiers collapsed late and suffered a 79-78 loss to Maryland on Sunday, the home crowd booed its head coach as he left the floor,” wrote Ryan Phillips. Woodson announced he would step down at the end of the season allowing Indiana time to carefully consider their next head coach as many had expected him to be fired after the season “Maybe I’m leaving too soon, I don’t know,” Woodson said. “This brings back old memories My last game on this floor was against Ohio State for the Big Ten title back in 1980 Although Woodson is stepping down from Indiana he is reportedly in line to become a top assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp “Sources say Mike Woodson is a leading candidate for the Kings’ top assistant spot under Doug Christie. He last coached in the NBA in 2021, and spent the past four years as the head coach at Indiana,” posted Sam Amick. On Friday, the Hopkins County Jail in Kentucky confirmed that it has custody of three individuals who were detained by ICE in Bloomington Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson addressed the situation in a statement Friday morning Thomson said that federal immigration enforcement falls outside of the city’s legal authority and that ICE agents can enter the community without advanced notices our commitment to supporting our community within the bounds of the law remains constant,” Thomson said in the statement.  told the IDS that they did not receive any notification from ICE including information about the three Bloomington residents detained as of Friday The unexpected visit from ICE raised concerns among community members and advocacy groups member of the Palestine Solidarity Committee at IU delivered a speech at the rally in which she said that the recent actions that ICE has taken in Bloomington are “disgusting.”   “We cannot allow America to continue to treat the very people that carry this country on their backs as if they are replaceable as if they are invaluable and as if they are subhuman,” Samara said “Immigrants are people just like us.”  In 100 days, President Donald Trump and his administration have arrested 150,000 undocumented immigrants and deported 139,000 of them.  “They are tearing families apart,” Samara said “In the face of the current political climate As a part of this crackdown, the administration revised ICE’s policy on “sensitive locations.” ICE first established “sensitive locations” where immigration enforcement actions may not occur in 2011. According to a fact sheet from the Department of Education “All children have a right to free public education regardless of their actual or perceived immigration or citizenship status or that of their parents,” the fact sheet said.  As of Jan. 21, 2025 churches and university campuses are no longer considered safe spaces Attendees of the protest expressed concerns over safety for students and faculty at IU.  our fathers and children who have had to stay locked up in their houses for the past three days afraid that ICE might show up,” Samara said “Our university has breached the safety that they promised us.”  said that they should be studying for exams they’re fearing for their family and friends.  Murray said the staff are worried about ICE waiting in parking lots and that it is ruining the mental and learning atmospheres in the building “I hope we go back to a sense of normality and due process,” Murray said “I hope that moments like this really unearth how inequitable the system is.”  Others at the rally also mentioned the Due Process Clause of the Fifth and 14th Amendments. This clause guarantees fair treatment and legal protection for all individuals. This includes those facing removal or that have been detained by ICE.  A few signs also had the words “due process” written on them Toward the end of the rally, Bloomington Alliance for Immigrant Rights organizers recommended people to memorize the National Lawyers Guild federal defense hotline The NLG provides resources for resisting federal repression.   They also explained that the place where students have the most rights is inside their dorm or home ICE agents must have a search warrant signed by a judge dated and timestamped with their full legal name of the person to enter a home but protestors leaving the rally could be seen walking down Kirkwood Avenue holding signs and chanting once more.  we will not put up with ICE,” they shouted.  The Daily Rundown is published Monday through Friday and gives you a quick look at the day's top stories Friday's weekly recap will let you catch up on the most important and most popular stories of the week Find out what the IDS is saying about IU basketball distributed during the IU basketball season Students have walked IU’s campus for over 200 years leaving behind stories passed down through generations From whispered legends to strange traditions that defy explanation IU’s folklore is woven into the fabric of student experiences.   shaped by the bizarre imaginations of those who care to share them According to campus lore the architect who designed Herman B Wells Library in 1969 made a critical miscalculation — he forgot to account for the weight of the books the library has been slowly sinking a few inches into the ground ever since The 12-story library was built atop a solid 94-foot bed of limestone a foundation that isn’t about to give way under any number of books it can hold.   the legend persists — maybe it’s the sheer absurdity of the idea has felt the overwhelming weight of knowledge pressing down on them During spring 1966, students reported hearing a nightly bird-like call echoing through McNutt Quadrangle starting as a slow pitch and rising into a hysterical shrieking laugh.   The sound quickly became a campus sensation drawing students to the McNutt and Foster Quadrangle parking lots just to hear it Some even recorded the eerie call for local radio broadcasts Dormitory and university officials saw him as a disturbance and launched efforts to catch him in the act students banded together to protect him from being discovered culminating in an infamous panty raid where his call became a rallying signal for the chaos Editor’s note: This story includes mention of violence.  The chilling tale of the Hatchet Man begins with a premonition by clairvoyant Jean Dickson who predicted that someone would escape from a mental health hospital and kill one female student from Indiana’s top three universities When news spread that a dangerous man had indeed broken out of a hospital near Bloomington The legend follows two students who had received special permission to stay in their dorm at the empty McNutt Quadrangle over Thanksgiving break They became uneasy after hearing about the escaped man over the radio and devised a secret knock so they could recognize each other who was studying alone in her third-floor room heard a strange sound echoing through the empty halls — a dragging she pulled the covers over her head and lay still and she spent the rest of the night wide awake Lying in front of her room was her friend from the ground floor her fingernails worn down to the bone from desperately clawing at the door Nestled in the heart of IU’s Old Crescent, the Rose Well House is more than just a picturesque landmark. It’s the setting of one of the most enduring romantic legends on campus Built in 1908 over a cistern that once supplied water to the campus the small limestone pavilion has long been a gathering place for students.   modelled the shape of the eight-sided well house on his Beta Theta Pi fraternity pin the Rose Well House has been tied to love and commitment and while it served as a favored spot for marriage proposals and weddings Legend has it that if you share a kiss with your significant other inside the well house at the stroke of midnight The kiss only counts if it lasts the duration of the full twelve strokes of midnight Whether students believe in the magic or just enjoy the tradition the Rose Well House remains a cherished symbol of IU’s romantic folklore for couples seeking a moment of history The Stolen Fish of Showalter Fountain  Few campus landmarks are as beloved, or as frequently tampered with Depicting the "Birth of Venus" surrounded by five bronze fish the fountain has been at the center of IU traditions and pranks for decades.   After IU’s historic 1987 men’s basketball national championship win legends surrounding the original still persist Some say it will only be returned when IU wins another banner while others believe the team won’t win again until the fish is brought back.   When former head coach Bob Knight was fired in 2000 students gathered at the fountain in protest and carried one of the fish all the way to the football stadium two more fish were nearly stolen just after graduation the missing fish remains one of IU’s most famous legends.  This story was originally published in the Indiana Daily Student's Source print publication March 3 IN — Bloomington South High School was named one of the three winners of the 15th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM competition securing a prize package valued at $100,000 and Sara Carmona worked as a team to create Stormshield a headband that helps individuals with hearing aids participate in athletics The school also received the Rising Entrepreneurship Award which comes with an additional $25,000 to help develop a sustainable venture that extends beyond the competition three of the seven Bloomington High School South students in the team traveled to Washington to present their STEM solution live to a panel of judges during which students refined their project based on real-life experiences and challenges reflected on the students' evolution throughout the competition I watched them sit in the corner of this classroom and come up with an idea and I knew it could be successful,” she said comprised of five seniors and two sophomores faced the challenge of brainstorming and developing their project from scratch The inspiration for the invention came from her inability to compete in sports with her device but we knew what we wanted to do,” she said The competition culminated in a pitch event where 10 finalists were chosen from the 50 state winners but the students expressed their gratitude simply to be part of the experience they announced one of the first national winners and I just remember all three of us just like Milks emphasized the significance of their achievement "I think it's really unusual to see kids' ideas and their follow-through and their innovation and their intellectual courage represented in a public space And this competition lets them do just that," Milks shared Among the powerful messages shared by the students was a call to young girls interested in STEM fields “If I could say something to all the young girls watching it's that you have to believe in your skill and you have to be confident and brave enough to really go into an idea even if you aren't totally sure that it's going to work out," Yang shared Another team member reflected on the feeling of being an outsider in a male-dominated field “You might walk into a room and see that you are the only girl studying something related to STEM and no one should be the one telling you you don't belong.” The students hope to improve the prototype over the coming months and eventually develop a patent When Nicholas Hall was a little boy he wanted to grow up to own a restaurant just like his grandfather “I particularly love breakfast food so I always imagined having a restaurant that focused on breakfast Nicholas loved drawing and painting and took art lessons when he was a child “My Mom would say I was always happy when I was creating something,” he says So how did those two childhood ambitions fare when Nicholas became an adult but Nicholas does welcome guests to his Bloomington home And he is a well-known local abstract expressionist artist specializing in mixed media paintings those two interests are only part of the life Nicholas has created start at the beginning when Nicholas was born in the small Ohio town of Fremont where he excelled in sports “My parents took me to a lot of musicals and “But I think I took guitar and piano lessons for about a month or so until the next sports season started and never picked them back up.”   After graduating from high school, Nicholas came to Indiana University in 1988 to earn an accounting degree in 1992 and get a job as an auditor at Price Waterhouse Nicholas returned to Bloomington where he purchased his current home in November 2023 is “there is so much creativity and openness and for someone who is curious like me there’s always something new to check out.”  What Nicholas does now is create art, make Pockties, write music, perform around town (particularly on warm Saturday mornings at Two Sticks Bakery) and open his home for free monthly musical concerts and out-of-town guests “I like to say that we focus on fellowship and food and the music is always a wonderful bonus.”  I enjoy being able to get an entire point across — beginning middle and end — in a few verses and a chorus There’s just something about it and it keeps drawing me back in.”  the idea to create the men’s pocket squares popped into Nicholas’ mind about seven years ago The story goes that Nicholas was walking down the streets of Manhattan and noticed how even in New York City men are no longer wearing ties with their suits and sports coats While Nicholas says he agrees that wearing a tie can be uncomfortable it does help bring some color and pizzazz to an often-drab outfit create a pocket square that would be easy to wear and approachable to more men Thus was born the Pocktie — a pocket square made from recycled neckties “It took a while to find someone who had the patience to deconstruct a tie and reconstruct it into a Pocktie pocket square and boutonniere,” Nicholas says. “I got a ton of help and inspiration from my friends at IU’s Eskanazi fashion program For the fashionable neckties that are used to make his Pocktie Nicholas said he originally got most of his ties at Goodwill in Queens “Ties are really inexpensive when you buy them by the pound and the ties that are given away in the New York area can be pretty amazing,” he says I have had people donate them to me from their father’s closet.”  “I work with found and donated materials so I never know what I might use to create my art I also appreciate the community aspect of using found and donated materials,” he says “I would label my work as ontological abstract expressionism I enjoy seeing a piece unfold before my eyes Nicholas says he can work to his heart’s content I am always happy to welcome people into my home to view my art.”  Nicholas also has a studio in his walk-out basement which he rents on Airbnb as well as his own studio which he makes available when he is traveling and on some high-demand weekends Located in Nicholas’ mid-century ranch home in the Bryan Park neighborhood, the rental known as Bloomington Bliss is one of the highest rated on Airbnb the rental offers an open living room and kitchen with two bedrooms and a bathroom “My home is the perfect size for me and it is set up perfectly for hosting house concerts and guests The Bloomington home also is the site of special gatherings to honor Nicholas’ son Graham Born 15 weeks premature on Thanksgiving Day 2006 and Reece spent four months in a hospital before finally coming home,” Nicholas says Knowing the roller coaster challenges of having a premature baby, Nicholas founded the nonprofit Graham’s Foundation in 2009 to offer support for parents of premature babies Graham’s Foundation has supported 175,000 families in navigating the scary journey of prematurity Graham’s Foundation also has shipped 35,000 care packages to parents of premature babies The care packages contain a Preemie Parent Pamphlet and other information and resources to help parents know they are not alone in the fight to help a premature baby live and thrive “I host volunteer gatherings at my place every couple of months where we put together all the items that go into our care packages We always welcome more volunteers,” Nicholas says The care packages also are an important reminder that “life’s true measure is not the days lived but the lives touched.”  Reach Jackie Finch Marjorie “Marge” Goldberg to fight for the educational needs of a son born with epilepsy and learning disabilities Her experience helping integrate the Minneapolis schools in the late 1960s and early 1970s also taught her the power of mobilized parents That work made Goldberg one of the country’s most influential champions for disability rights former special education director at the Minnesota Department of Education who is writing a history of PACER “Marge was the creator of parent development in the state “And she went on to change Minnesota’s education system.” She added: “I just think she was an amazing woman.” Goldberg died April 8 after a long fight with cancer Marge Goldberg’s demeanor, Wedl said, made her “incredibly effective” with educators and legislators as they forged the state’s special education laws in the 1970s. “She didn’t come out as adversarial. She came out saying, ‘Let’s train parents so they know what their rights are,’” he said. “She could be tough. But she wanted to work collaboratively.” The Department of Education gave PACER its first grant of about $10,000 to train parents to go to schools and advocate for better special education services. PACER representatives were “everywhere,” he said. “They would be available to go to meetings with schools to advocate,” Wedl said. “Showing up was a big deal. Marge was very bright, and she knew the adversarial approach would just kind of get everybody dug in.” He continued: “It was just an amazing organization that she and Paula created. And legislators trusted her. That goes a long way.” Wedl credits PACER for helping develop a couple of major pieces of legislation: The first recognized that special education services need to begin at birth. And the second nodded to the need to help students transition to independent lives after graduation. Examples include schools setting up small apartments so students could work on life skills or teaching students how to use public transportation. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who spoke at Paula Goldberg’s funeral in 2022, said the two co-founders made PACER a national model for helping families of children with disabilities, she said. “When I speak to national groups, PACER is always recognized as the foremost group in the country,” Klobuchar said in an interview. The work started with a mom looking out for her son, she added. “[Marge] knew the school setting would be a challenge to her son [Peter]. She started thinking of his future,” Klobuchar said. But the work became much more, as the scope broadened and PACER was formed, Klobuchar said. “I think that she was tenacious. And she was someone who had a vision for something she wanted to do,” Klobuchar said of Marge Goldberg. “In the ′70s, not a lot of women were running things. They were just trying to find people who could advocate for kids in the schools and after.” “They found something that was a gaping hole, and they filled it,” she added. Daniel Goldberg, Marge’s son and a local attorney, said his family moved to Minneapolis in 1965 and soon realized that “there was a definite redlining movement in south Minneapolis to segregate white neighborhoods from Black neighborhoods.” His parents became active in the pairing of Field and Hale schools in 1971-72. Field, where he attended, was integrated. Hale was all-white. “They were always very socially aware people,” said Daniel Goldberg, who currently serves as a PACER executive board member. His mother’s first experience was as a speech therapist in Charleston, S.C. She was only permitted to go to white-only schools. She left Charleston because of it, he said. He called his mother “a powerhouse for social change” in her work integrating schools in south Minneapolis in the 1970s and “an incredibly impactful voice for the underserved,” through her work with PACER. At first, he said, her focus was improving special education laws in Minnesota. Then, he said, she realized that families didn’t know the services they were entitled to. “It was all about fairness and equality,” he said. Majorie Goldberg was born in 1934 in New Haven, Conn., the third of four children of Benjamin and Gertrude Vogel. After graduating from high school in 1952, she earned a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy and correction from Emerson College in Boston. After leaving Charleston, she took a job in the Washington D.C., area at a Walter Reed military hospital rehabilitation center. She met Nelson Goldberg on a blind date and the two married in 1958. In 1962, Daniel was born. In 1963, the couple had Peter, their second son. He was diagnosed at an early age with epilepsy. Marge Goldberg retired from PACER in 1998 and then traveled extensively, including to Machu Picchu, Australia, New Zealand and Egypt. She was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by two sons, Daniel and Peter Goldberg, and three grandchildren. On the same day of the home raids, Wang was fired from his longstanding post at Indiana University over email – a move that goes against the university’s own policy But Wang hasn’t been charged with any offence and his lawyer says no criminal charges are pending The incident has driven fear into the hearts of Bloomington’s Asian community of faculty and students who fear a political motivation “I study at the computer science department and I’ve overheard Chinese professors talking about how worried they are that something similar could happen them too,” says a Chinese PhD student who came to Bloomington from Suzhou last September and who asked not to be named given the sensitivity of the issue During the first Trump administration, the Department of Justice created the China Initiative in an effort to find and prosecute spies for Beijing working in US research and development sectors it was criticized by rights groups for fueling racial profiling and violence against Asian Americans and a review by the Biden administration saw the effort ended in 2022 Trump has made targeting universities whose leadership and faculty he believes run against his own agenda a key element of his second term For the Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Gang Chen what happened to Wang “brings chills to our spines” “What is particularly troubling in this case is that Indiana University fired him and his wife without due process presuming guilt instead of innocence,” Chen says found himself charged by the Department of Justice for allegedly failing to disclose links to Chinese organizations on a grant application for a federally funded project with just weeks remaining in Trump’s first term “The investigations on Professor Wang and his firing creates huge fear among researchers of Chinese descent, especially students and postdoctorates from China together with legislation and hostile rhetoric I learned that many Chinese students and postdoctorates here are considering leaving the US.” More students from China come to the US to study and research at third-level institutions than from any other country The fear of Chinese spies operating in the US isn’t completely unfounded A report released recently by US intelligence agencies found that China remains the top cyber threat to America and many politicians on the right believe smaller colleges in low-key parts of the country such as the midwest could be used as gateways into the US by the Chinese Communist party But the vast majority of the estimated 300,000 Chinese academics and students in the US today are in the country to legitimately contribute to research and to learn say experts who fear that Trump’s targeting of colleges deemed to be antisemitic may now be shifting to the midwest Last month, the Department of Education named Indiana University Bloomington among 60 colleges under investigation for alleged antisemitic discrimination It’s not only Chinese academics and students who could be affected Indiana and other heartland states are home to some of the largest Chinese student populations in the country Nearly half of Urbana-Champaign’s combined population of 130,000 people in neighboring Illinois is made up of college students and staff Nearly six thousand are students from China which has a population of under 80,000 people bringing hundreds of millions of dollars into the college and town these and other small university towns have come to rely on international students to prop up their economies A couple of blocks west of the Indiana University Bloomington campus Korean and Asian eateries cater to the college’s large Asian community The sidewalk in front of the Longfei Chinese restaurant is dotted with food signs written in Mandarin says he believes that the political problems between Washington and Beijing have seen the number of Chinese students coming to the US – and through his doors – fall in recent years who one recent morning is here grabbing lunch says his student visa status allows him to stay in the US for up to five years but he and his Chinese colleagues are worried that the Trump administration may cut that short “I’m concerned with President Trump’s hostility against China and this kind of hostility may affect Chinese students and professors “I’m concerned about the impact on my life.” Faculty at the department where Wang worked for more than two decades have called for Indiana University to revoke his dismissal His profile page on the University’s website has been removed and college authorities have not commented on his firing who worked as a library analyst at the same university] have been arrested … further there are no pending criminal charges as far as we are aware,” says Jason Covert a lawyer at Taft Stettinius & Hollister “They look forward to clearing their names and resuming their successful careers at the conclusion of this investigation.” Covert would not say whether Wang planned to remain in the US The Bloomington Faculty Council passed a resolution April 8 to form a mutual academic defense compact for the Big Ten Academic Alliance.  The Rutgers University Senate passed the same resolution April 6 to establish an alliance with the Big Ten’s 18 universities to defend “academic freedom institutional integrity and the research enterprise.” Rutgers called on the leadership of other Big Ten universities and their governing boards to implement the compact Big Ten leaders would have to convene a summit and initiate its implementation.  its funds would be distributed to provide “immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement,” including legal counsel and representations legislative advocacy and countersuit university affairs to accomplish their agenda He mentioned Wang’s firing as motivation to pass the resolution.  Sinno was suspended by IU in December 2023 after he attempted to reserve a room for an event co-sponsored by the Palestine Solidarity Committee.  “When they go after one university after the other even very powerful universities like Harvard and Columbia who have large endowments they’re not strong enough,” Sinno told the IDS Wednesday Psychology professor emeritus Steven Sherman introduced the idea of a defense compact at the BFC meeting Sherman said he heard about the Rutgers faculty’s resolution through a colleague at IU.  and it would provide a lot of support for faculty,” Sherman told the IDS “I know quite a few faculty who’ve had their grants suddenly stopped in midstream.”  He said faculty had concerns regarding free speech and tenure BFC’s version of the resolution was the exact same as the Rutgers resolution with the names of the universities swapped After he introduced the idea at the meeting he said the vote for approval passed nearly unanimously.  IU recently removed diversity equity and inclusion language from its diversity websites and signage around campus following a nationwide push against DEI Indiana Governor Mike Braun and President Donald Trump both signed executive orders in January to eliminate DEI initiatives.   Sinno said he thought the faculty felt the need to defend their colleagues and students.  “They wanted administration to actually do something,” Sinno said to coordinate and create (a) common pool of resources to use to defend whoever is being targeted at the time.”  skeptical that IU’s administration would adopt the idea as they would need to in order to create a compact who he said had been in touch with other universities to encourage others to adopt the resolution as well.   “I think it has a chance of gaining foothold I have no idea whether administrations will be open to it,” Sherman said IU spokesperson Mark Bode did not respond by the time of publication.  Indiana 2025 signee Trent Sisley is playing in the Ballislife All-American Game on Saturday night in Long Beach The two-day event statues all over campus These works of art commemorate researchers athletes and musicians and often have some surprising backstories Here are some of the best stories behind iconic campus art.  Herman B Wells by Harold ‘Tuck’ Langland  Perhaps the most famous statue on IU’s campus is that of former president and chancellor Herman B Wells the B in his name doesn’t stand for anything according to Wells’ obituary in the New York Times in 2000 His parents couldn’t agree on a middle name that started with ‘B’ the tradition on his mother’s side of the family.   Wells’ statue sits on a bench in the Old Crescent It’s tradition that if students shake Wells’ hand it will bring them good luck on their final exams.   According to a 2010 Indiana Daily Student story carved “University of Minnesota — Go Gophers” on the underside of the brim of Wells’ hat.   ‘Search of Universal Life,’ or ‘SOUL’ by William Snapp  William Snapp’s statue of a man reaching towards the sky stands in the Commemorative champion – Of the 10 players that Indiana coach Darian DeVries has added from the transfer portal none is less experienced than North Florida forward Josh Harris Harris might have the highest upside of any of the additions 220-pound power forward fills a need for the Hoosiers who needed a bit more bulk in the frontcourt he started every game he played and averaged 13.4 points and 7.1 rebounds and while the Atlantic Sun Conference isn’t the Big Ten Perhaps one question that needs to be answered for Harris – as well as fellow North Florida transfer guard Jasai Miles – is how much their numbers were a product of North Florida’s system Indiana is banking that those players made that system high-scoring Here’s a look at some examples of Harris when he’s been at his best in his career It didn’t take long for Harris to make his presence felt for North Florida Harris proved pivotal in a road game at SIU-Edwardsville Harris scored 20 points in the Ospreys’ 78-73 victory in Edwardsville His production was almost evenly balanced over two halves He had nine points in the first half and 11 in the second Harris made a key layup with 3:46 left to put North Florida up six after SIU-Edwardsville had rallied to make the game close it was the efficiency that stood out for Harris For a freshman still coming to grips with college basketball a 9-for-11 performance from the field to go with nine rebounds was impressive indeed North Florida Ospreys forward Josh Harris (10) slam dunks the ball in the first half over Jacksonville Dolphins forward Tito Deng (15) Jacksonville University played University of North Florida Thursday night 2025 in the River City Rumble in Jacksonville [Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union]2025 / Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesIn his short career He scored 31 in a 90-81 victory at Queens College in November He’s had five other games where he scored at least 20 points so 21 of those 50% or better games were on five shot attempts or more Harris’ career-best was a 5-for-6 game against Austin Peay in March His highest career field goal total was 12 in that contest against Queens Harris has only failed to convert 50% of those shot attempts seven times Harris is a decent free throw shooter for a big man He’s had three games where he made four without a miss One reason Indiana wanted DeVries was for his rebounding Harris has had four games with 10 or more rebounds His career-best was 14 boards against non-Division I Warner Harris had seven offensive rebounds against another non-Division I foe – Edward Waters He blocked four in a January game against Stetson but it’s one of only two games in which he had more than one block Harris had one three-assist game in his career and four games in which he had two steals there’s not a lot of hard-and-fast data on Harris yet The one thing that sticks out is his offensive rebounding percentage He grabbed 13.8% of available offensive rebounds when he was on the floor in 2025 Any offensive rebounding rate in double digits is considered to be very good It will be interesting to see how much Harris gets a chance to show what he can do for the Hoosiers TODD GOLDENLong-time Indiana journalist Todd Golden has been a writer with “Indiana Hoosiers on SI” since 2024, and has worked at several state newspapers for more than two decades. Follow Todd on Twitter @ToddAaronGolden. many players have made new priorities on their list definitely losing a sense of loyalty to the school they originally signed with In today's age of college sports, it is seen less and less that an athlete spends their entire career at one school. With the transfer portal and NIL it's the wild wild west, while good in some ways some college athletes stay with the original commitments throughout their entire college career and Indiana guard Anthony Leal is a prime example of someone who is loyal 100% After five seasons with the Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball program Leal was thought to be done with his college career expected to move on the next phase of life but as the great Lee Corso says "Not so fast According to Peegs.com, and 247Sports the Indiana graduate is appealing to the NCAA for another year of eligibility looking to be a sixth year senior with the program The 2020 Indiana Mr. Basketball and four-star prospect was an impressive scorer during his career at Bloomington South. basketball guard Anthony Leal will pursue waiver for 6th-year of eligibility Editor's note: Hoosiers On SI looks at the Indiana players Darian DeVries has brought to the team from the transfer portal and their best performances At risk of asking this question too early is new Indiana forward Reed Bailey underrated who obviously made Bailey a priority as he was one of the first players to commit to Darian DeVries Bailey kind of got caught in a bit of a weird churn in the portal He wasn’t the first commit – that was either Conor Enright or Tucker DeVries depending on how you might look at it – and he didn’t come in with the drama Lamar Wilkerson did as Indiana won the head-to-head fight with Kentucky for Wilkerson Bailey’s commitment also became public knowledge on a Sunday a day when many aren’t paying attention to such things If it’s true that Bailey got overlooked due to circumstances beyond his control matches up to anyone else Indiana brought in from the portal a very high total from a non-point guard who averaged nearly 20 points per game could be the best player Indiana brought in his career suggests that his game will do plenty of talking for him Here’s a look at some examples of Bailey when he’s been at his best in his career a player’s biggest moment becomes a footnote because his team lost Such was the case for Bailey in a Davidson game at Rhode Island on Jan Bailey went crazy against Archie Miller’s Rams He scored a career-high 32 points on 11 of 17 shooting and he was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range Bailey also made a layup with five seconds left in overtime to put Davidson in front It was an effort that would be long remembered by Davidson fans Except Rhode Island’s Sebastian Thomas drilled a 3-pointer with a second left to give Rhode Island a 92-90 victory Bailey started all 97 games he played at Davidson but he really didn’t become dominant until his recently completed junior season Bailey averaged 18.8 points for the Wildcats shooting 41.5% from 3-point range and 47.7% overall It stands to reason that Bailey’s top six scoring efforts came in the 2024-25 season He peaked with the 32-point game at Rhode Island but he had five other games where he scored at least 25 points it’s not surprising that Bailey shot 50% or better on five or more shots in a game 27 times Bailey’s career-best percentage was 5-for-7 against both Fordham and Peace His personal best was 11 field goals made in a 72-66 win at Richmond in January Bailey has had an impressive 23 games where he shot at least 50% from 3-point range Only one of them came on five 3-point attempts or more but he’s proven to be reliable from long range Bailey’s career-best in 3-point accuracy was a 4-for-4 performance in that win against Richmond That’s also his career-best for 3-pointers made in a game Bailey can be lethal at the free throw line He’s had 25 games where he was perfect from the line Seven of those games came when Bailey attempted five free throws or more He was 12-for-12 at the line twice – in a 2023 game against Miami of Ohio and in a January 2024 game at Fordham Though rightly characterized as a stretch four forward He’s had six career double-digit rebounding efforts His career high was 14 rebounds against Loyola in February including an 11-assist effort in that aforementioned win against Richmond Bailey’s career high in steals is five in a December 2024 win against Detroit Mercy though he’s had a trio of three-block games Bailey’s performance against Richmond gave him his best sports-reference.com game score of 29.8 He barely missed a triple-double with 30 points It was one of the most dominant performances any of Indiana’s transfer portal additions have had in their careers Bailey rates highly in advanced offensive metrics He ranked in the top 20 in the Atlantic 10 Conference in nearly every advanced offensive category – including the fourth-best Player Efficiency Rating at 22.3 Advanced stats bear out Bailey’s distribution skills His 25% assist rate is outstanding for a 6-11 forward Bailey is the finished version of what Trent Sisley could become for the Hoosiers once he gets accustomed to playing at the college level it will bode well for Indiana on two fronts and he could help Indiana down the line given Sisley’s potential This article first appeared on Indiana Hoosiers on SI and was syndicated with permission customized to your favorite sports and teams – The detail you notice first about Indiana portal addition Sam Alexis is that he left national champion Florida to join the Hoosiers you notice that Alexis didn’t play much for the Gators He appeared in 24 games and averaged 11.9 minutes in those games He didn’t make a single start for the Gators So what is Indiana coach Darian DeVries seeing One has to look at Alexis’ 2023-24 season at Chattanooga It’s the one time in Alexis’ career that he was a regular part of the rotation 9.1 rebounds and a Southern Conference-best 2.1 blocks Nearly all of the best statistical games Alexis has had can be traced to his final season at Chattanooga DeVries and his coaching staff are hoping they can tune him in to generate similar production in cream and crimson Here’s a look at some examples of Alexis when he’s been at his best in his career Chattanooga Mocs forward Sam Alexis (4) pulls down a rebound over forward Jan Zidek (20) and Louisville Cardinals forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield (5) during the second half at KFC Yum / Jamie Rhodes-Imagn ImagesThere are games where your big moment comes at clutch time or via a winning shot but there are also big moments where you control a game nearly from start to finish Alexis experienced this rare feeling against Tennessee Tech Alexis was part of the difference as Tennessee Tech had no answer when it came to stopping the 6-foot-9 forward Alexis had a double-double against the Golden Eagles by halftime He had 11 points and 11 rebounds in just 14 minutes of action He scored another 11 points in the second half to go with six rebounds after the break The Mocs needed every bit of Alexis’ 22 points and 15 rebounds as they rallied to beat Tennessee Tech “The thing that I like the best is his rebounding effort night-in and night-out He's playing more controlled and that's big for a sophomore He's going to continue to get better,” Chattanooga coach Dan Earl said after the game Fifteen of Alexis’s 16 best scoring efforts came at Chattanooga the one Florida game in the mix for Alexis – a 14-point effort – came against Jasai Miles and Josh Harris in a 99-45 win for the Gators against North Florida in December Alexis topped 20 points three times with the Mocs His career-high was 27 points against non-Division I Covenant While big men shoot higher percentages since much of their offense comes at the rim it’s still impressive that Alexis has shot 50% or better in 50 of his 89 career games His career best was a 7-for-7 shooting performance against Wofford in January 2024 His career best in field goals made is 10 in a game against Mercer in 2023 but he fires away just enough to have to account for him He went 4-for-6 from 3-point range in that same victory against Mercer He had seven games where he didn’t miss from 3-point range all in games with two 3-point attempts or less Alexis is not a good free throw shooter at 51.6% He twice went 4-for-4 in his career at the line but he’s also had 15 games where he had at least one attempt and didn’t make a free throw Florida Gators forward Sam Alexis (4) and Auburn Tigers forward Chaney Johnson (31) fight for a loose ball as Auburn Tigers take on Florida Gators at Neville Arena in Auburn Florida Gators defeated Auburn Tigers 90-81 / Jake Crandall/ Advertiser / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesFantastic rebounding is what stands out for Alexis He’s had 17 games where he reached double-digit rebounding totals including a pair of 12-rebound efforts with Florida His career-best of 17 rebounds came in an 84-75 victory against Mercer in February 2024 He’s had nine games with five offensive rebounds or more As part of that 17-rebound effort against Mercer he had a career-high seven offensive boards He’s had five blocked shots in a game twice and at least four blocks in 10 games Alexis had five games with at least four assists Alexis looks good in advanced statistics that track rebounds and blocks Leaders for advanced stats can be murky by conference as there is no minimum standard for inclusion but Alexis had an offensive rebounding percentage of 14.5% at Florida last season That would make him one of the best rebounders in the country in that category Alexis did lead the Southern Conference in total rebounding percentage at 19.6% in 2024 He blocked 9.1% of available shots in his final season at Chattanooga While DeVries values shooters and perimeter defenders nearly all of his teams have also had a rebounding and rim protecting player like Alexis Perhaps his time at Indiana will bring out the best in him again Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Sports Illustrated or its affiliates Welcome to the See the list here Head coach Darian DeVries added a proven winner with the addition of Sam Alexis a 6’8” forward who joined from the Florida Gators Alexis missed the last six weeks with an injury but was a key bench player for Florida before that Despite being eighth on the team in minutes per game Alexis was the fourth highest in usage rate with the ball going through him in 22% of his possessions Alexis does not have stats from last season that jump off the page and .6 blocks in a little over 11 minutes per contest there are a lot of minutes available in Indiana’s front court and past production suggests that Alexis could be more of a contributor in a bigger role Alexis is one of two guys whose main offensive game resembles a typical center’s He gets most of his shots at the rim and uses all of his 240 pounds to back defenders down Alexis has a nice set of finishing moves inside that should serve him well against taller centers in the Big Ten He’s also able to get up above the rim to finish lobs from anywhere on the court Though I don’t think anything is solidified in terms of roles or minutes Alexis’ production as a sophomore at Chattanooga suggests he could be in contention for a starting spot He averaged 10.8 points per game that year starting all 32 games and posting a whopping 16.2% block rate He also played well against high major* competition that season with the Mocs scoring 16 points with four blocks against Louisville and 13 points with three blocks against Auburn Those games suggest his production at Florida was an issue of minutes With season averages that vary so much from year-to-year it’s hard to project just what Alexis’ role will be but hasn’t proven himself consistently at the high major level neither have any of Indiana’s other forwards if both Todd Golden and DeVries thought this guy was worth a scholarship I think he’s a guy with a lot of upside that could be just what Indiana needs inside with the shooters *one of these high majors was Kenny Payne’s Louisville Indiana landed a commitment from Elon transfer Nick Dorn last week a 6’7” combo guard who averaged 15.2 points per game with the Phoenix last season In an offseason that’s featured a complete roster reset Dorn is a guy that’s flown a little bit under the radar he’s the fourth highest-rated prospect in his class I think Dorn has the potential to be a fast fan favorite for the Hoosier faithful and athleticism - three things Indaina’s sorely lacked - that he brings He made 35.1% of his 8.4(!) attempts from behind the arc last year and shot a notch above 36% on a slightly lower volume the year before Dorn brings an athleticism and size that will make him a matchup nightmare no matter where he plays on the floor He’s capable of handling the ball and creating for himself but posted an assist rate of just 5.1 and didn’t even average an assist per game last year making him a threat both off the dribble and as a cutter surrounded by Indiana’s other passers Another thing to like about Dorn is that he has two years of eligibility remaining He has the skillset to be an instant impact guy but with so many players in their final years of eligibility it’s good to know there will be a rotation player back again the following season it’s hard to imagine Dorn outside of the top eight in the rotation though a starting spot may be hard to come by at his primary positions He won’t beat out Tucker DeVries or Lamar Wilkerson at the two or three spots but he brings an athleticism and leaping ability that neither of them have making him an attractive backup depending on matchup He shoots well in catch-and-shoot scenarios so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him paired with any of the plus passers in Indiana’s first and second units Elon only had two high major teams on their slate last year but Dorn scored above his season averages in each instance so he doesn’t seem like a guy that will be afraid of the moment at Indiana
