Warren JFK’s Freddy Bolchalk makes contact with a pitch during a game against Boardman on Wednesday in Warren
WARREN — The ball was hit to third base
A Tyler Kirlik throw to first ended the game
and Boardman pitcher Collin Resetar calmly walked off the field to greet his teammates near the dugout
but Resetar threw his first career no-hitter on Wednesday in an 11-1 win over Warren JFK
because then it usually happens,” Resetar said
The Boardman junior allowed one walk and hit a batter
An error in the fifth was the reason the Eagles got on the board and accounted for JFK’s third and final base runner of the game
Resetar said it’s relaxing to pitch with the lead
his Spartan teammates finally broke through
Grayson Eicher and Kirlik each drew walks to start the top of the third for the Spartans (9-3) to load the bases
Landon Whippo opened the scoring with a two-RBI single
and Boardman’s lineup found its groove
Ivan Rudiak reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second to get into scoring position
Mason Nawrocki stretched the Boardman lead to 4-0 with a two-run single to left
Then Kaden Mayhew and Tommy Varley singled to load the bases once again
A popup on the infield by Butto wasn’t communicated properly between the JFK infielders and fell in front of the mound
Eicher added an RBI single to round out the scoring in the third
“We did a lot of good things,” Boardman head coach Joe Lendak said
Things go kinda well when the offense gets rollin’ and you’re pitching from ahead
and the whole team starts rolling a little bit.”
Boardman tried getting into run-rule territory in the fifth
LJ Norvell singled to left and Butto drew a one-out walk
Eicher made it a 9-0 lead with a two-RBI double to the wall in the left-center gap
but he was thrown out at home plate on a flyout to left field to end the frame
Resetar lost the shutout bid after hitting Lucas Mealy with a pitch
An overthrow to first base with two outs got the Eagles (6-6) on the board as Mealy scored the unearned run
Thomas Ramovs was hit by a pitch and came across on a fielding error at shortstop
Then Mayhew also scored on a throwing error in the next at-bat to put the Spartans up 11-1
Taggart Carfangia took the loss for the Eagles
He allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks
He struck out two in three-plus innings pitched
“We gotta flush this,” Kennedy head coach Jim Ciambotti said
and today … we’re facing this situation
You gotta flush it and move on tomorrow.”
Wednesday’s performance was Resetar’s first career no-hitter
He came close as a freshman against Warren G
but the Raiders managed to get an infield hit
But now he can say he accomplished the feat
He got to keep the ball he threw for the final out
and he calmly walked back off the field when leaving the park
with the same disposition he had at the end of the game
“I just got into a groove after the first inning
and my defense helped me a lot,” Resetar said
“I didn’t have my offspeed today
CLEVELAND — Bo Naylor hit a three-run homer and Luis Ortiz kept Minnesota’s hitters off balance and off the ..
PITTSBURGH — Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning just seconds before a fan fell ..

Two former Big Lots locations in the Mahoning Valley are scheduled to reopen their doors today under new ownership
months after the company announced the closure of all its stores
The stores at 7100 South Avenue in Boardman and 4331 Mahoning Avenue NW in Warren will welcome customers as Variety Wholesalers
a discount retailer known for closeouts and bargain shopping
Variety Wholesalers confirmed in May that it would be reopening three locations in the region
store at 2611 Ellwood Road scheduled to open on May 15
The reopening comes after Big Lots announced in December 2024 that it would be closing all its locations after a potential sale of the company fell through
The closures included stores in Austintown
According to a press release from Business Wire
Variety Wholesalers aims to offer a "treasure hunt shopping experience" at the reopened stores
had operated over 1,420 stores across 48 states and had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
leading to numerous store closures nationwide
A Boardman woman reported to police on Wednesday that $30,000 was fraudulently withdrawn from her bank account after someone opened a joint account in her name at a bank in Michigan
According to a Boardman Police Department report
the woman went to pay for gas on Tuesday and her card was declined due to insufficient funds
which informed her that the transaction occurred at a Huntington Bank branch in Warren
The branch manager in Michigan told the woman that two individuals opened a joint account in her name and subsequently transferred the funds to another account
The report indicates that the crime occurred between approximately 10:47 a.m
Boardman police advised the woman to contact the Warren Police Department in Michigan
since that’s where the crime took place
The police report does not say how the woman's identity information got into the hands of the perpetrators
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) offers the following tips to help consumers avoid becoming victims of similar fraud schemes:
Monitor Your Accounts Regularly: Review your bank and credit card statements frequently for any unauthorized transactions
Report any suspicious activity immediately to your financial institution
Be Cautious with Your Personal Information: Do not share sensitive information such as your Social Security number
or through unsecured websites unless you initiated the contact and are certain of the recipient's legitimacy
Shred Financial Documents: Before discarding them
shred any document containing your account numbers
Be Wary of Unsolicited Communications: Be suspicious of unsolicited emails
or phone calls asking for your personal or financial information
Legitimate companies and government agencies will not typically request such information through these channels
Consider Credit Freezes: A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report
making it more difficult for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name
unique passwords for your online accounts and avoid reusing passwords across multiple sites
Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Whenever possible
enable two-factor authentication for your online accounts
This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification step in addition to your password
If you believe you have been a victim of identity theft or bank fraud, contact your financial institution immediately and file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov
You may also want to file a police report in your local jurisdiction

A Boardman Township mechanic has resigned following an investigation into his alleged misuse of township funds
According to an affidavit filed in Mahoning County Court in March of 2025
former township mechanic Michael Carkido is suspected of using township funds to pay for personal expenses
It all started on March 5 when low-profile performance tires were found in the township's garage
these tires are meant for vehicles such as Cadillacs
Township Road Superintendent Kim Blasco then began an investigation into this matter by launching an internal audit into purchasing records for police department parts and equipment purchased between January 2024 and March of 2025
That audit revealed alleged irregularities in purchasing parts that would not be usable for any of Boardman Township's police vehicles
Carkido was placed on paid leave as the investigation continued
further investigation revealed that Carkido's son owned a vehicle with which those parts would be compatible.
a review of Auto Zone purchase records showed purchases of brake pads
oil filters and brake rotors for several vehicle makes
but none being compatible with any of the township's vehicles
further investigation revealed Carkido allegedly had a side business where he repairs vehicles with repairs inlcuding oil changes
Carkido had allegedly been seen using a tire changer in the township garage for changing tires in the side business
A search warrant was then conducted where several auto parts were seized
Other items seized included an iPhone charging station
An employee at the Boardman Township Street Department confirmed with 21 News that Carkido had since resigned from his position in the township
The exact date of his resignation is unclear at this time

fun and comfortable road bike at a bargain priceAnother compelling option from Boardman
Balanced handling; impressive value; well-thought-out design
Boardman’s new SLR is a performance road bike built for British conditions
the SLR 9.2 Carbon’s brilliant spec and ride quality further Boardman’s reputation for producing high-value
purple-to-black fade paintjob and the Boardman SLR 9.2 Carbon offers a lot of bike at a crowd-pleasing price
the SLR is a wholly new carbon road bike frame from the British brand
Boardman doesn’t go into detail on the type of carbon fibre used to build the frame
beyond saying there’s a 'high-grade' C10 carbon blend featured here and on the two pricier models in the range
with a 'medium-grade' C7 blend used on the 9.0 and 8.9 models
that the frame's aerodynamic shaping was developed using CFD modelling and wind tunnel testing
the SLR features a host of practical considerations – all designed to make it better to ride in tough conditions (as we so often have to deal with in the UK)
The frameset features bosses to fit dedicated mudguards
These metal 'guards offer full-length protection
The SLR frameset can take up to 36mm tyres without mudguards and comes supplied with 30mm tyres fitted as standard
The down tube features two-position bottle mounts
but you can switch to the other boss position to use 750ml bottles if desired
On the underside of the down tube is a third set of bosses to add another bottle for epic days out
The aero-shaped carbon seatpost is clamped in place by a hidden bolt
located underneath the seat tube and top tube junction
27.2mm-diameter round post with the aid of a wedge-shaped adaptor if desired
The bottom bracket shell remains a press-fit BB386
While this might infuriate fans of threaded BBs
BB386 can be adapted to suit most cranksets and offers plenty of space for 30mm spindles and decently sized bearings
The rear dropout uses SRAM’s Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) standard
which means replacement gear hangers should be easy to come by
and it means the frame should be relatively futureproof
After all, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see SRAM bring its direct-mount derailleur design from its off-road groupsets (such as Red XPLR AXS and GX Eagle AXS Transmission) to its road ones sooner rather than later
The SLR was originally conceived as a flat-out race bike, but evolved into more of a performance-orientated endurance platform in 2021
The 2025 SLR gets sportier with its ride position again
Boardman has doubled down on this theme with the cockpit too
412mm chainstays on the size-large (dropping to 410mm on the small and extra-small models)
The only place things have been relaxed is the head tube angle
The SLR 9.2 Carbon is solid value for money at £2,500
while my 58cm test bike tips the scales at 8.6kg
The build of the 9.2 Carbon is based around Shimano’s 12-speed 105 Di2 drivetrain
with a compact 50/34t crankset and wide 11-34t cassette
Boardman provides the internal-routing ICR stem with a 400mm-wide alloy bar
The dedicated aero seatpost is topped with a Prologo Scratch M5 saddle
The mid-depth Alex Boondocks 3 wheelset has a claimed weight of 1,686g
with 30mm-deep and 21mm-wide (internally) tubeless-ready rims
That means the 30mm-wide Goodyear Eagle tubeless tyres fitted can be run without inner tubes should you wish
The Eagle is a cheaper version of the high-performance Eagle F1
with a 60 TPI casing and an R:Shield breaker belt for added puncture protection
What it lacks in the supple speed of the F1
it makes up for in longevity and robustness
All things considered, the Boardman’s value for money is impressive for 2025
Specialized’s equivalent Roubaix SL8 Comp
The SLR 9.2 Carbon’s ride is a formidable combination of a sporty position
quick handling and a balanced feel on the road
The new frameset’s combination of aerodynamic tube shapes
and straight-legged fork would suggest a stiff ride
It is responsive and firm in all the right places
The firm yet forgiving ride combines with nimble handling, making for a bike biased towards the racy side of the endurance bikes spectrum
That’s somewhat at odds with the practicalities of the design – the generous 36mm tyre clearances
proper mudguard mounts (with dedicated Fend Off guards available) and third set of bottle bosses on the down tube's underside
That has meant throughout testing I’ve been able to store a tool can here
while still running two bottles for long rides
It’s a simple alternative to a down tube storage port
especially if you run more than one bike and don’t want to double up on a dedicated toolkit for each one
As usual, Shimano’s 105 Di2 groupset impresses
and the gearing is well-suited to the SLR’s intended use
As a companion for long rides with plenty of elevation
The 105 brakes are loaded with power and bags of feel
and they stayed scrape-free and quiet throughout test rides in all weather
the cockpit combines a long stem with a relatively narrow bar
Although the 40cm bar is a good 20-40mm narrower than my preference
I liked the slightly rearward shape and ovalised top section
but I’d still prefer a wider option as standard
the SLR 9.2 Carbon features a two-piece cockpit
so swapping in your preferred option would be easy
The SLR 9.2 Carbon covers ground impressively well – it’s especially good at smoothing out poor
while the swiftness of the steering is on the right side of nervous
It makes the Boardman a fine descender; corrections are met with instant responses and the confidence from the grippy tyres helps through fast corners
The Boardman has all the gear range I need for climbing and its responsive frameset makes out-of-the-saddle efforts worth it
The 1,686g wheelset is middleweight, and like most bikes at this price, the SLR 9.2 Carbon would benefit from upgrades to a set of the best road wheels and tyres
I could induce a bit of flex from the front wheel in out-of-the-saddle efforts
for example – enough to get the spokes to tick against the brake caliper body
suggesting the spoke tension needs addressing on this test wheel
but they lack a bit of zip compared to Goodyear’s racier F1 model
The SLR 9.2 Carbon is a worthy successor to its Bike of the Year-winning predecessor
The frameset is smartly thought out for UK riders
the option for dedicated mudguards and a ride that blends racy handling with a smooth ride feel
It results in a bike that’s long-distance capable and exciting to ride, and makes it a solid competitor to bikes such as Cervélo’s Caledonia 5, the Giant Defy Advanced and the Vitus Venon Evo

BOARDMAN — To those outside the program
Boardman has been one of the surprise teams of the spring sports season
But those around the Spartans program knew they had the makings of something special
having already matched last season’s win total after 15 games
the Spartans currently sit atop the stacked All-American Conference
having already picked up wins against Archbishop Hoban
defending Division I state champion Austintown Fitch and perennial state power Champion
“They’ve learned how to win and how to really finish games this year,” head coach Fred Mootz said
This is the most complete team I’ve ever coached as far as defense
we dealt with some injuries that kind of set us back
they’re just locked in and they just play for each other
They love each other and they compete for each other.”
In the weekly Ohio High School Softball Coaches Poll that came out on Monday morning
Boardman currently sits ranked seventh in the state in Division III
“We’re fortunate to be ranked in the state
and we deserve it because we’ve worked hard for that,” Mootz said
1 team at the end of (the season) in Division III.”
The way last season ended lit a fire underneath the Spartans after Boardman had its season come to an end in a 16-14 shootout to Uniontown Lake in the Division I sectional final
the Spartans hit the ground running during the offseason and it paid off
“You have to get better during the offseason,” Mootz said
and it has paid dividends and it’s showing out here right now.”
Even though Boardman graduated seven seniors from last year’s team
the Spartans still returned the majority of their lineup and pitching rotation
those returners have only gotten better and are the biggest reason why Boardman is in the position it is
“It’s been huge — we have virtually seven girls back in the lineup that were starters last year and we’re led by our (five) seniors,” Mootz said
Senior Tori Strines has spearheaded the Spartans’ pitching rotation with a 2.14 ERA and a 7-1 record
while juniors Gabi Sferra (1.47 ERA) and Addie Kowacich (1.91 ERA) have been equally as effective with a combined record of 6-1
That trio has combined for 110 strikeouts and 42 walks
“(Strines) is our bulldog in the circle…and this year
she’s had her best stuff,” Mootz said
she’s really worked to fine tune her game
She’s our spark and she’s our senior leader
“This is a girl that had us one hit away from winning a district title as a freshman against a team that was loaded in Walsh Jesuit
There’s no team or lineup that Tori doesn’t feel like she can go out there and dominate.”
freshman catcher Addie Rudge has come in and contributed right away
leading the team at the plate with a .460 average and 22 RBIs to go along with a team-high five home runs
Strines is also right there contributing offensively for the Spartans
junior Ellie Wymer and senior Alex Ward are each batting over .300
while seniors Ava Freeborough (.294) and Laci Jurus (.290) are right on that cusp
and they’re very selfless,” Mootz said
“One girl can go out and she’ll be 4-for-4 and they’ll cheer for her just the same as if they went 0-for-4
probably the most patient team I’ve ever coached on the offensive end
They draw a ton of walks and they see the ball well.”
The Spartans have showcased their depth and balance throughout the season
demonstrating that they can get contributions from any myriad of players on a game-to-game basis
Rivera and Jurus led the Spartans with three hits apiece
Then in Boardman’s recent win over Champion
Freeborough led the Spartans with a pair of hits
Ward went 3-for-4 with two RBIs against Howland
and in the win over the Falcons on April 9
Strines and Freeborough each hit home runs
“There’s not one spot in the lineup that I don’t think can come up and get us a gap ball to possibly win a game,” Mootz said
13th and 14th players that can also come out here and deliver big hits for us
So I have confidence in every single girl in the lineup and on the bench.”
Boardman continues its high-flying season on Wednesday with a home matchup against Mineral Ridge
before hosting Cardinal Mooney on Thursday

The Boardman SLR 9.0 Carbon is part of the company's newly unveiled 'four season fast' range of versatile road bikes – and the first thing it shouts is value
A high-quality carbon frame in terms of build and ride feel
a Shimano 105 mechanical groupset and loads of versatility for less than two grand is something of a rarity these days
For more options, check our best road bikes buyer's guide
I've ridden a lot of Boardman's SLR bikes over the years and they've always impressed me as being great all-round road bikes
Boardman has made some big changes for this model
as the company has clearly put some real thought into the new design
this is still a performance road bike at its heart
with relatively aggressive geometry that gives quick handling and makes the SLR feel generally nippy and nimble
Even with the ability to fit larger tyres and full mudguards
Boardman has managed to keep a directness and responsiveness
The front end feels well balanced and gives you confidence through the bends while the rear end tracks perfectly
It feels really planted and I got a lot of pleasure and reward from seeking out technical descents
Both the frame and fork have sufficient stiffness where it is required
which was noticeable when descending at speed
Heavy braking created no issues for the fork even on poor road surfaces
Take the spacers out beneath the stem and you have quite a low-slung front
which is Ideal if your goals are speed and getting as aero as possible
my position felt more purposeful than on many endurance bikes I've ridden
Being set up like this was a great compromise for switching between lunchtime blasts and longer rides that I used the SLR for
I believe that Boardman has got the overall geometry spot on for what the SLR is designed to do
so we don't necessarily need a bike that's been designed for the pro peloton
but we don't want an endurance bike either
This SLR fits in the middle ground very nicely
delivering a riding position for going fast without any comfort compromises
Ultimately it focuses on real-world efficiency and practicality
coping well with both smooth and not-so-smooth road surfaces
It's far from the plushest carbon frame I've ever ridden
but factor in the price and it is genuinely impressive
The SLR does a great job of minimising the high-frequency buzz and takes most bumps and bangs in its stride
And for these qualities I'd put it on a par with Merida's Scultura Endurance range and Giant's Defy models
Boardman has summed up the road bike most of us really need
There are still some aluminium alloy bikes in the SLR range, such as the 8.8 and 8.6
as Boardman has presently only updated the carbon fibre models
Boardman follows a tiered system for the grades of carbon fibre used
with C7 used for the base model SLR 8.9 and this 9.0 model
Boardman doesn't go into the nitty-gritty of specific composite grades
but how it pans out in practice is that the more expensive grades are stiffer for a given amount of material
This means lighter frames can be made without sacrificing stiffness
with the cheaper offerings sometimes being a little more resilient to knocks and crashes
It's a great quality frame and full-carbon fork with some really smart-looking paintjobs throughout the range – and Boardman backs up the quality with a lifetime warranty for the original owner
the C7 frame and C10 fork rides very well indeed and an all-up weight of 8.8kg in this spec is very respectable
Looking at our photos you can see that the SLR is a clean
smooth-looking bike and it's no surprise to see a focus on aerodynamics
technology such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) allows you to 3D model a bike to see how it reacts to airflow
and it would be foolish not to use it when creating a bike like this
which gives designers the chance to understand how stresses and other physical effects will affect the frameset in real-world use
and you can take a lot of the guesswork out of the design before you even get to the prototype stage
Boardman tested the new SLR in Sliverstone's wind tunnel and says that it's 5.7W faster than the outgoing model across a -15° to +15° yaw sweep at 50km/h (31.1mph)
The SLR works with both mechanical and electronic groupsets with all cables and brake hoses hidden within the frame
while the seatstays are dropped low for improved airflow
dropped this bike off with us and showed us the rest of the range
and he was keen to point out that this bike hasn't been designed for a WorldTour team – but for riders like you and I where performance is important
but not at a cost of having a bike you can't just jump on and ride if the weather conditions aren't right
or if your route takes you on poor road surfaces not suitable for a race machine
which is impressive for a road bike that hasn't slipped into the 'all-road' category and gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to routes and even terrain
On a 36mm tyre it's possible to ride on hardpacked gravel tracks or canal routes without compromise
and if you wanted to try your hand at a long-distance event like an audax or sportive then having that extra volume in the tyre means less stress on your contact points
You also get an extra set of bottle cage mounts underneath the down tube for a bit of extra load carrying capabilities
The three bolt mounts on the top of the down tube give you some adjustability for larger bottles
There are also mudguard mounts hidden inside the fork legs and the seatstays
you will need to modify the stays slightly
If you don't fancy the faff of that then Boardman has worked with Kinesis to develop a Fend-Off mudguard designed specifically for the SLR's frameset
The Fend-Off SLRs cost £60
and while I haven't seen them in the flesh
I will say that the Fend-Offs I fitted to my own Fairlight were the easiest mudguards I have ever installed and remain quiet and rattle free
With guards fitted the tyre clearance drops to 32mm
which for me is more than plenty on a road bike and matches that found on many other brands' similar offerings
Another neat touch is the inclusion of a universal derailleur hanger (UDH)
ranging from XS to XL with corresponding top tube lengths of 525mm to 585mm
head tube of 151mm and a seat tube of 500mm due to the frame's compact
Stack and reach figures are 563mm and 388mm respectively
This model comes with a Shimano 105 R7100 mechanical groupset
The 105 groupset sits midway in Shimano's road line-up above Claris
all of which are soon to be replaced by CUES
Above it in Shimano's hierarchy are 105 Di2
Compared with the previous iteration of 105 the STI levers have had a major makeover
This groupset has cemented itself as the range's 'all-rounder' and it's done that based on how good it is in terms of shifting and braking while still representing good value
The only non-groupset component we've got on the SLR is the FC-RS520 chainset
but I think it cheapens the overall look a little
Performance-wise I couldn't tell any difference
and the 50/34T chainring and 11-34T cassette combo gives you a great spread of gears for all kinds of riding
The 1:1 ratio bottom gear is perfect for hilly days
while you won't run out of a gear to push against in the 50/11T max ratio
Boardman has specced a 160mm rotor for the front disc and a 140mm for the rear
which provides more than enough stopping power for all road riding conditions
The SLR 9.0 uses an alloy two-piece system stem called the SLR ICR and Aero Alloy handlebar
no model in the range uses a one-piece cockpit as James Ryan points out that for most people an integrated cockpit doesn’t work
He says: “We could fit one and add another £300 to the retail price
but someone might just take it off straight away as the combination of the stem length and handlebar width doesn’t work for them.”
Each bike comes with a size-specific setup with this medium model going for a 100mm stem and 400mm handlebar
though Boardman sells the components individually should you want something else
and the bar's shallow drop gives you plenty of access regardless of how flexible you are
The carbon seatpost has plenty of adjustment that allows you to slide the saddle forwards and backwards
providing you with an inline position or 15mm of layback
This really helps to let you dial in your fit
This post comes as standard from this model upwards
with the 8.9 SLR getting a round aluminium post – though you could upgrade to this carbon post for £80; should you want to run a round post on any model you can get a spacer from Boardman
The saddle is a Prologo Scratch M5 PAS with steel rails
I like Prologo saddles and found this one excellent
I'm a fan of the narrow nose and minimal padding
which worked well when I wanted to get forward in a race position
The wheelset uses Alex's 30mm-deep alloy rims
which help the bike's 30mm tyres maintain their shape
While the wheels are fitted with inner tubes
everything is compatible with going tubeless
The performance of the wheels impressed me
They arrived well tensioned and running true
staying that way until the end of the review period
I also found no issues with stiffness and the ride quality is decent
so they don't hamper your acceleration or climbing
which can be the case with some wheels on bikes at this price
those specced with Mavic's Aksiums for instance
The Goodyear Eagle tyres have a grippy compound and decent rolling resistance
and I was generally impressed when I improved them
Tyres are an area where some bike brands scrimp to save some money
so I'm glad to see Boardman has specced these that have an RRP of £50 each
They have a good ride feel and the R:Shield breaker belt helps keep the punctures at bay
The SLR range starts with the £1,400 SLR 8.9 Carbon that has a Tiagra groupset and Boardman wheels, with this SLR 9.0 next in line at £1,800. The 9.2 with 105 Di2 costs £2,500 while a grand more sees an upgrade to Ultegra Di2 and Zipp 303 S wheels
The range is topped off with the SLR 9.8 that features SRAM's excellent Red groupset and a set of Zipp's 404 Firecrest wheels for £5,500
For comparison, I recently reviewed Ribble's Allroad SL
On paper it has similar capabilities to the SLR with tyre clearances of 35mm (32mm with mudguards) a carbon frameset and a mechanical 105 groupset
But the Ribble's geometry is more endurance based
and I wasn't a massive fan of its ride quality
Merida's Scultura Endurance lives up to its name by having slightly more relaxed geometry than the SLR
which means a stack about 20mm taller for the same size frame
It has other similar attributes to the Boardman too
with 35mm of tyre clearance (32mm with guards)
hidden mudguard mounts and internal cabling
The 4000 has a carbon frameset
a 105 mechanical groupset and costs £2,250
The SLR reminds me of Giant's Defy range
performance-based frameset with geometry backed off a bit from full-on race bike
though the Defy wins on tyre clearance at 40mm – though without the option for fitting mudguards
The biggest difference though is the price
The Defy Advanced 2 comes with a 105 mechanical groupset and the same crankset as the Boardman SLR – and a £2,699 price
well-thought-out idea of what is arguably the best all-round road bike for many of us
efficient bike regardless of whether you have the mudguards fitted or not
and you have the versatility of being able to comfortably ride in all kinds of conditions
versatile and efficient – the welcome update makes this a road bike for all conditions
List the components used to build up the bike
Rear Derailleur: Shimano 105 RD-R7101 12-Speed
Front Derailleur: Shimano 105 FD-R7100 12-Speed
Seat Post: Boardman Two Position Aero D-Shaped Carbon
Tyre: Goodyear Eagle Tubeless Ready 700 x 30mm
Tell us what the bike is for and who it's aimed at
How does that compare to your own feelings about the bike
the new SLR is aero-optimised to be breakaway-fast and ultra-distance comfortable
the SLR is the perfect option for those looking for one performance bike to ride week in
Tell us briefly about the cheaper options and the more expensive options
The new SLR Carbon range starts with the 8.9 & 8.9 Women's at £1,400 with this SLR 9.0 is next at £1,800
but that comes with SRAM Red AXS and deep-section Zipp wheels
Tell us about the build quality and finish of the frame and fork
A very good quality frame and fork throughout
Tell us about the materials used in the frame and fork
Both the frame and fork are created from carbon fibre
the frame being Boardman's C7 grade while the fork is C10
Tell us about the geometry of the frame and fork
The geometry is reasonably aggressive without being as extreme as a pure race machine
How was the bike in terms of height and reach
How did it compare to other bikes of the same stated size
The stack and reach figures give a ratio of 1.45 in this size
Tell us how you felt about the ride quality
the SLR has a good ride quality and coped well with varying road surfaces
Did the bike feel stiff in the right places
Did any part of the bike feel too stiff or too flexible
The SLR feels stiff throughout the frame and the fork
For the price and build the overall weight is decent
which when paired with the geometry makes the SLR an efficient bike to ride
Was there any toe-clip overlap with the front wheel
The SLR has quick handling that has a direct feel to it making it a lot of fun to ride fast
Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's comfort
The Goodyear tyres have a supple ride feel
which helps the bike overall and I got on well with the Prologo saddle
Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's stiffness
The alloy handlebar is stiff enough for out-of-the-saddle efforts and the wheels showed plenty of lateral stiffness
Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's efficiency
The 105 groupset gives a good range of gearing for added efficiency
Anything you particularly did or didn't like
Any components which didn't work well together
The 105 mechanical groupset offers a great balance of performance
Tell us some more about the wheels.Did they work well in the conditions you encountered
Decent quality wheels that performed well throughout the review period
Did they work well in the conditions you encountered
Good all-rounder tyres that are great to see on a bike at this price
How would the controls work for larger or smaller riders
which while not flash works well and offers plenty fo comfort
Anything else you want to say about the componentry
Comment on any other components (good or bad)
I'd have preferred the 105 chainset rather than the non-series option
but this affected the aesthetics rather than the performance
How does the price compare to that of similar bikes in the market
The SLR is very well priced compared to the competition from the likes of Ribble
Merida and Giant as you can see from the comparisons in the review
Use this box to explain your overall score

Sophomore Izzy Babcock continued her scoring surge with another hat trick
including two clutch fourth-quarter goals to send the game to overtime
Babcock scored just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter
and racing straight to the net for a goal that cut the deficit to 6-5
After Boardman responded to make it 7-5, Cheyanne Franklin scored off a feed from Grace Diller with under three minutes to play to bring the Leopards within one
Babcock was fouled and awarded a free shot opportunity
She calmly stepped up and scored with just three seconds left to tie the game at 7-7
sending the Lady Leopards into sudden death overtime for the first time since 2017
After a scoreless three-minute overtime
Louisville seized the moment in double overtime
The game-winning play began behind the goal
where Diller quickly flipped an inbound pass to Genet standing in front of the crease
Genet caught it clean and ripped it into the back of the net for the walk-off goal.
Genet was mobbed by her teammates as the Leopard bench stormed onto the field in celebration of their first home win of the season
Franklin scored a pair of goals in the game
including one in the first quarter off an assist from Emmy Harter and another in the fourth that sparked the comeback
Freshman Grace Diller circled the net before scoring in the second quarter and assisted twice
Sophomore Ashley Milburn also found the back of the net in the second
making a slick move to bounce off a defender and finish with poise
Cassie Austin scored four goals to lead Boardman
including the final two goals of the first quarter
Austin’s final goal came off a feed from Lydia Kenney to put Boardman ahead 7-5 with 7:28 to play
The Lady Spartans have now dropped five straight and fall to 3-7 on the season

Sarah Boardman is the artist who painted the portrait Donald Trump has demanded be taken down—Newsweek has rounded up what we know about her
Trump wrote on Truth Social that Boardman's painting of him
He said: "The artist also did President Obama
She must have lost her talent as she got older
I would much prefer not having a picture than having this one."
Colorado's Democratic Governor Jared Polis' office has said it was surprised" to learn of Trump's criticism
adding that the office is "always looking for any opportunity to improve our visitor experience."
Boardman is a British-born artist who lives and works in Colorado Springs with her husband
She studied in Germany as an apprentice to an Alt Meister in 1985
learning the techniques of the Old Master Painters
artists who usually painted from the 13th to the early 19th century
realism and detail —often with portrait subjects
Boardman was first commissioned to paint former President Barrack Obama's portrait for Colorado's State Capitol after she won the nationwide "Call for Artists" put out by Denver State
This came following the death of Lawrence Williams in 2003—he had painted all 43 previous presidential portraits
when she said: "My portrait of President Trump has been called thoughtful
he will be another president on the wall who is only historical background and he needs to look neutral."
Boardman has painted five presidential portraits
"Sarah has always been passionate about painting portraits
being particularly intrigued by the depth and character found deeper in her subjects," her bio says
"Sarah believes that the ultimate challenge is to capture the 'personality
character and soul' of an individual in a two-dimensional format
She uses a combination of realism and painterly aspects designed to draw the viewer [a] into piece."
she was asked by a Colorado Pols journalist if her "personal feelings about Trump after (her) work on his portrait."
She answered: "Not at all – when I start to paint a portrait
and 'essence' of the subject which I strive to portray
Any personal feelings about any subject are not relevant and are left outside the studio per my training to 'leave those emotions at the door.'"
Boardman was also asked what she would say to people who were opposed to Trump's portrait being displayed in the first place
She said that while she believed "everyone is entitled to their own opinions
all presidents from the first to the last are entitled to have their portraits in the Rotunda as it is the 'Gallery of Presidents.'"
"Being president is the qualification for entry into the gallery
and I respect that qualification on face value as I did with the portrait of President Obama," Boardman said
Polis was surprised to learn the President of the United States is an aficionado of our Colorado State Capitol and its artwork
and features Rose Onyx and White Yule Marble mined in Colorado
and includes portraits of former Presidents and former governors
We appreciate the President and everyone's interest in our capitol building and are always looking for any opportunity to improve our visitor experience."
Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves
was purposefully distorted to a level that even I
It is yet to be seen whether Polis' office will accede to Trump's wish and take the portrait down
Boardman is yet to respond to the president's comments

Banking & Financial Services
Electricity bills in Boardman Township are going up.
residents have been getting letters in the mail about new supply rates for their homes and small businesses
the supply rate is about four cents per kilowatt hour ($0.0487)
That rate will last until April 1 and is with Energy Harbor
The new rate is about eight cents per kilowatt per hour ($0.0804)
That is a fixed rate with Dynegy and will continue through April of next year
consumers do have the option to shop around and change their supplier and possibly get a lower rate.
“Our recommendation to people would be to look for the lowest fixed rate term that they can find and to go ahead and lock in,” Rebecca Bridges, the Chief Marketing Officer for Electricyrates.com said.
Electricityplans.com is one of several sites that helps people compare different suppliers
Bridges said one thing people should really pay attention to when comparing is the fine print.
“That low price per kilowatt hour might have a 12 dollar a month or 14 dollar a month fee attached to it …if you factor in that low price comes with a monthly charge you're not getting the low price you thought you were,” Bridges said.
The eight cent rate provided in the letter to residents is decided through the township's Electricity Aggregation Program
The township negotiates with companies for the rates
the township had the same fixed rate with Energy Harbor for four years but that agreement expired.
"While the aggregation program has been able to protect participants from rising rates over the past several years
the rate for the new term will be rising to meet current market conditions
The aggregation will continue to provide a competitive price offer
it never guarantees to be the lowest available option at all times," a news release from the Township states.
If Boardman Township residents want to shop around to try and find a lower rate from a different supplier they must opt-out of the aggregation program by March 3
Residents can send a letter to Dynegy or can call 1-833-241-4599 to opt out.
If residents want to stay in the aggregation program and accept the new rate no action is needed
Every electricity bill is split into two parts - the delivery rates and the supply rates
Consumers are able to change their energy supplier at any time but are never able to change their delivery provider
For Boardman Township the delivery provider is Ohio Edison
Delivery rates for Boardman Township are not expected to change
BOARDMAN — A fast start helped Boardman put away Howland on Monday night
so the Spartans duplicated the feat on Thursday to complete the season sweep of the Tigers
After jumping on Howland with two early runs in the first inning
Boardman pulled away from the Tigers the rest of the way in a comfortable 9-3 victory on Thursday
the pitcher can relax and the defense can play loose,” Boardman head coach Fred Mootz said
you’ve still got a three or four-run lead
It just allows everybody to play much looser and obviously create separation the more runs you can add on
generally we’re going to win games.”
Tori Strines led off by getting on base thanks to a walk
then Ava Freeborough’s base hit advanced Strines into scoring position
Alex Ward capitalized with a two-run single to give the Spartans the early advantage
Ward finished 3-for-4 at the plate with the two RBIs to lead Boardman
another senior and another girl with a ton of experience,” Mootz said
“She started out a little rough at the plate this year
but she has really picked it up the last couple games
she’s unbelievable at third base.”
Things got dicey for Boardman at the top of the inning
as Howland was able to load the bases with two outs after a leadoff hit by Madison Schmitz and a pair of walks
But Gabi Sferra managed to get the Spartans out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning
The inability to capitalize on runners in scoring position proved to be the Tigers’ undoing
as Howland left seven runners on base over the first four innings
you can’t win games if you don’t score runs,” Howland head coach Nicole Wayt said
“With every team in our conference right now
you need to put up probably 10 runs to win a game
that’s basically what teams are doing
you have to find a way to get on and you have to trust yourself
I’m not upset about what we did tonight
I liked their effort today,” Wayt said
“I thought we played better today than we did the other night
Boardman added a run in the second inning and two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to RBIs from Strines and Laci Jurus
Howland got on the board with an RBI groundout from Calleigh Luman in the third inning
But the Spartans put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning that could have been more had it not been for a bases-loaded flyout to centerfield with two outs that limited the damage for Howland
Boardman took advantage of four walks by Howland pitcher Maya Kubancsek
scoring two runs off a hit by Kenzie Cherne and a bases-loaded walk
“I always use ‘pass the bat’ mentality — don’t try to do too much and just put balls in play
So they draw a ton of walks and they see the ball well.”
After Sferra pitched the first three innings
Strines came in and shut down Howland’s lineup for three innings until the Tigers scratched out a pair of late runs in the seventh off RBIs from Mary Moy and Brooke Tatar
“This umpire was pretty consistent — they had to go in there and they had to look at something that they could swing at,” Wayt said
“We preach to them all the time about not looking and going in there and looking at strikes that are going to be over the plate
But they have to go in there and look for strikes that aren’t going to be over the plate
Those are what we have to swing at because that’s what a good pitcher does
she throws strikes that aren’t over the plate.”
Boardman (12-2) travels to face Champion on Saturday at 11 a.m.
while Howland (7-6) has almost a week off until it travels to Alliance on April 23 at 5 p.m

BOARDMAN — Some residents are opposing a cellphone tower going up in the township
which they say will negatively impact a historic district
Officials said the project has cleared all requirements and will cause no ill effects to residents or property
The Verizon tower is set to be installed on property belonging to St
Mark’s Victory Lutheran Church on the corner of Mill Creek Drive and Glenwood Avenue
The project is being managed by North Star Towers
and some of the work is being completed by McCarthy Systems in Poland
A representative for McCarthy said little more than some asphalt removal has been completed so far
and the company is awaiting materials before construction can begin
Roger Miralia lives nearby — the tower will be about 500 feet from his home — and said he does not see a need for the tower with two others within a half-mile
He also worries about the effect on property values
residents’ health and nearby wetlands
“It’s about 100 feet from a house in the historic district
and it faces an area where all the historical homes are,” he said
“I’ve been talking to some of the neighbors
and we’re concerned because it could knock property values down by as much as 20%.”
The church is surrounded by three historical districts: The nearest is the Newport Village Historical District
and Mill Creek Park and Forest Glen Estates are not far away
Keiran said townships have no regulatory authority over cell towers unless they are on residentially zoned property or are going to be within 100 feet of a residence
the towers are subject only to state and federal oversight
– “Limits on township zoning power for telecommunication towers.”
“The state doesn’t want townships to have regulatory authority over these towers
or they’re at least limited,” he said
Keiran said some additional limitations are imposed when they might affect historical districts
but those also are not within the township’s purview
He said church properties are often exempt from certain regulations
and that is why mobile companies favor them
“I think what you’re finding is that communications companies are finding churches for their towers because they know they don’t want to be on residential zoned property
and that way it provides a small stipend to that church,” he said
Mark’s is supposed to receive an annual subsidy for hosting the tower on its property but a representative of the church could not be reached to confirm that or comment on the tower
he was asked to comment on the project for a Section 106 review by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office
Such a review is conducted when there is federal funding
licensure or any other federal interest involved in a tower’s construction
The review is a necessary part of obtaining a federal permit
Keiran said he noted that the proposed tower is within the view of the Newport Village Historic District
which became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 2006
manager of media and public relations for the Ohio History Connection
of which the Historic Preservation Office is a part
said the section 106 review was triggered because federal licensure from the Federal Communications Commission was required for the antennas on the tower
“We reviewed it (in December 2023) but we can only comment on its effects upon historic resources,” he said
that would be the historic districts themselves
“Nothing stood out as concerning or detrimental.”
it would necessarily — or even likely — have been sufficient to stop the project
He also said that towers being erected in historic districts is not uncommon
Keiran said a geotechnical report was conducted and submitted as part of the county permit application
The Vindicator was not able to reach the Mahoning County Building Inspector to obtain a copy of the report
so this article cannot address Miralia’s concerns about the nearby wetlands
Miralia said the tower is being built on what he worries is unstable ground
where the park road comes close to the creek
“The sidewalk is collapsing there and the railing is falling in
and the creek is only about 20 feet away,” he said
“The construction company said they’re going to put some struts in there so that it will be supported
but I don’t know how good that will be.”
Keiran said there is little information that can be obtained
“The FCC has issued guidelines on radio frequency radiation emissions
and those guidelines prohibit local governments from considering the health effects of cell towers in zoning decisions,” he said
While the International Agency for Research on Cancer considers radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as “possibly carcinogenic,” both the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute conclude that available scientific data does not suggest a causal link between the towers and cancer in humans
Keiran said Miralia is not the only resident to call about the tower
but unless it falls directly within the narrow confines of the authority the state affords townships
there is nothing Boardman can do to address those concerns
“If it’s not within 100 feet of a residence or going on a residential property
we have no authority to address it,” he said
