Boaz Man Sentenced to 110 Years After Pleading Guilty to Over 200 Child Pornography Charges
Blount County- A Boaz man has been sentenced to 110 years in prison after pleading guilty to more than 200 child pornography charges in Blount County
The charges were uncovered following a tip from a local storage facility where disturbing materials were found
According to the Blount County District Attorney’s Office
was sentenced to 10 years on each of 225 counts of possession of child pornography and 20 years on each of five counts of producing child pornography
The sentences are to be served concurrently
The case came to light when Spann failed to make payments on a storage unit he was renting in Blount County
As the storage facility’s owners began clearing the unit
they discovered what appeared to be explicit images of young female children and a child-sized sex doll with childlike features
The owners immediately contacted the Oneonta Police Department
The subsequent investigation involved the Oneonta Police
and the FBI’s Violent Crimes Against Children Task Force
Authorities determined that Spann was in possession of 225 images and/or videos of child pornography
and had produced five such materials himself
Spann admitted to both possessing and producing the illegal materials
This is not Spann’s first conviction related to child exploitation
he pleaded guilty in Marshall County to three counts of first-degree sex abuse and was sentenced to 10 years in prison
Following his arrest on the new charges in Blount County
Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey praised the storage unit owners for their quick action
to fight back against child abuse,” Casey said
“The owner of these units no doubt saved other children from becoming victims of Dennis Spann.”
Casey emphasized the serious nature of these crimes and the ongoing trauma experienced by victims
“Child pornography is not and never will be a victimless crime,” she said
“Every one of those images represents a child that was horrifically victimized and is victimized every time the images are shared.”
She urged the public to remain vigilant: “Never forget—if you see something
Every day I fight alongside law enforcement to protect our children and to make Alabama safe.”
The case stands as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by repeat offenders and the importance of community involvement in identifying and reporting potential abuse

Biology major Taylor Boaz discusses her research on caffeinated bees at the Undergraduate Research Symposium
Taylor Boaz is majoring in biology with plans to go to medical school so she can care for children as a pediatrician
But this semester, the University of Missouri–St. Louis junior has been concerning herself with different – much smaller – living creatures: bees
Specifically, Boaz has been working in the lab of Associate Professor Aimee Dunlap and evaluating whether exposure to caffeine impacts the rates at which bees forage
She used an artificial flower wall and gave the bees doses of either caffeine or sugar water
then tested how well they foraged using video analysis
She presented her work last Friday during the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium held on the third floor of the Millennium Student Center
and I just wanted to share my results,” said Boaz
who concluded there was no discernible impact from caffeine on foraging behavior
the process of conducting research and learning how to convey it was important
there are going to be times where I’m going to have to present research or findings or whatever it may be,” she said
“It was good to be able to practice communicating in a setting that is understanding
“Another reason is to be able to step out the box and not just isolate yourself to one specific thing
‘I did try this.’ I think that’s very important to try new things
even if you’re not going to be doing that pathway.”
Boaz was one of several students to receive special recognition for the quality of her work during a reception that followed the symposium on Friday afternoon
Information systems and technology major Kevin Kpankou explains his research on facial recognition at the Undergraduate Research Symposium
She might have had a small edge over some of the more than 50 other undergraduate participants whose posters filled the MSC’s third-floor rotunda and roughly half of the Century Rooms. That’s because Friday wasn’t Boaz’s first time presenting. Last year, she shared research she did for a Pierre Laclede Honors College course in which she examined the power and influence of women in the Bible
That speaks to the range of research that is on display each year at the Undergraduate Research Symposium
“I think that those new to the event would be surprised by the variety of topics and presentations that are offered,” said Kate Votaw
an associate teaching professor who serves as UMSL’s undergraduate research coordinator and plays a lead role in organizing the symposium
I find that many people narrowly associate ‘research’ only with the natural sciences
I always get a little more excited to offer students from the fine arts
humanities and lesser represented social sciences the opportunity to demonstrate their advanced projects as well
I am personally really proud of the span of topics.”
The research provides a novel framework for modeling the cultural consensus in subjective social judgments
“There are different ways that this research can be applied,” Kpankou said
if you’re developing a product and you want to target a specific subculture – say your product is meant for a certain type of person
and see how your product can meet their demands.”
Biology major Ilkim Green discusses the results of a literature review she did on gambling advertising with Psychology Assistant Professor Hannah White
Biology major Ilkim Green has been working with psychology master’s student Eric Wickenhauser and Assistant Professor Hannah White on a literature review examining the relationship between gambling advertising – which has become increasingly prevalent on television
across social media and inside sports stadiums and arenas – and its impact on gambling behavior
“There are two main populations that are impacted by this – problem gamblers and young people,” she said while explaining her work
the structures and strategies used in these advertisements really influence intentions to gamble
and we see that response impacting behavior
That means increased exposure to advertisements was associated with greater risk of gambling behavior.”
He also studied the growing trade influence of China
which operates two of the largest ports in the region and continues to make additional investments
All four students described pursuing research opportunities to deepen their learning
and Altamimi said she was glad to challenge herself and step out of her comfort zone last Friday as she showed off her work
That’s what Votaw hopes undergraduate students take away from their research
“The research process is one very reliable way to answer the questions we all ask and those that could improve things the most,” Votaw said
“By getting students involved in the research process as undergraduates
through the high-impact experience of hands-on learning
the impact of answering questions using systemic and empirical processes
“The last step in any research methodologies textbook is going to talk about the importance of sharing the results for reexamination and iterative growth in the field
I hope the URS provides our students with the chance to feel that sense of connection and contributions to what they are here to study.”

For all the talent South Carolina lost to the NFL Draft last month
the Gamecocks also lost something far more difficult to replace than raw ability: leadership
transfer linebacker Demetrius Knight was starting to emerge as someone who would ultimately show elite leadership skills
Knight and several other transfers joined a program that had multiple returning veterans who were already ingrained as team leaders
Head coach Shane Beamer recently admitted at the Florence Welcome Home Tour stop that he hasn’t seen any newcomers completely grab hold to key leadership roles on the team yet
but he has seen signs of those things emerging
“I think Boaz Stanley on the offensive line has those qualities — I do,” Beamer said
last year — and even when Spencer (Rattler) came in — it’s kind of like you go through January
you’re trying to get acclimated as a new guy
you’re trying to figure out how practice works
And then you have a little bit of a break in May and then when you come back for summer school
you’re more established and you can kind of take the bull by the horn.”
Stay on top of all things Gamecocks for just $1 for 7 days—lock in this special offer today!
Like the guys before him, Stanley just went through that exact process, arriving on campus as a natural leader but trying to find his way in a new place and program with new teammates, which is something he and Beamer talked about in his spring exit interview with the head coach.
“One thing I said is that you can’t really come into a new place and start trying to just hold everybody accountable,” Stanley said in a recent Gamecock Club Hour interview on 107.5 The Game. “You’ve got to kind of like lead by example and that’s something I’ve really been focused on during winter and during spring ball. I think that’s the first step you have to take as a transfer. You’ve got to try to earn everybody’s trust.”
Stanley, an Athens, Ga. native, who played right tackle and center at Troy before joining the Gamecocks, had an excellent spring on the field, leading Beamer to say after the spring game that he’s the current leader in the race to be the team’s starting center.

Stanley has not only talked with Beamer about his future role on the team but has started having discussions with his fellow offensive line teammates about how they can all work to build better chemistry together this summer.
“That’s the main thing that we’ve kind of seen during spring ball is we’ve just got to build chemistry between whoever is playing and that’s only going to come with more time spent together, just going out to eat together or getting more work in outside of when we’re working as a team,” he said. “That’s the main things we’ve got to work on is spending more time together, becoming even better friends than we are now, I think that will really take our game to the next level on the field.”
South Carolina had success last season bringing in older, more mature players via the portal and then empowering them to take on leadership roles.
Beamer is hoping to see the same in the coming months for the 2025 squad.
“I think that’s what Spencer did in a lot of ways,” Beamer said. “That’s what D Knight and a lot of those guys did. I think there are multiple guys that have those qualities, and we need them.
“Nick Sharpe on the offensive line, I know he was banged up, but I think he’s that kind of guy. Boaz, certainly playing center, there’s a natural leadership element to that position that’s important. I’m sure there’s a lot of em, but those would be two, particularly on offense, that come to mind.”

Boaz football coach Jeremy Sullivan has taken the job to lead the Jacksonville High School program
The move was made official at a Jacksonville City School board meeting Thursday
It comes after he led the Pirates for eight seasons
going 44-45 with seven straight playoff appearances
He advanced to the second round the last two seasons
I kind of got to a point where I thought it was time for me to find something new to focus my energy on
Just felt like it was the right time for me and my family to take on a new challenge," Sullivan said
Sullivan played for Jacksonville State football
earning all-America honors in 2001 as an offensive lineman
so the return to Jacksonville is a homecoming of sorts
He also was an assistant coach with the Gamecocks
a program that has made 12 straight playoff appearances under former coach Clint Smith – who left for White Plains earlier this offseason after going 105-47 in 13 seasons – was what made the job attractive before he got to know the program more over the hiring process
"They've had a lot of success," Sullivan said
After meeting with them and meeting the administration
I thought it was a good opportunity and a different kind of challenge and one that I was ready for."
Sullivan has also been a head coach at Citronelle for two seasons and spent time as an assistant at Demopolis
Jackson and Pelham before being hired by Boaz

Long ties to the community made the conversation with players hard
but Sullivan has always spoken highly about his bunch of athletes at Boaz
*t was very hard for me to have that conversation with them
I have always said the best thing about being the coach at Boaz is what great kids you get to coach every day and be around every day," Sullivan said
A lot of them are friends with my daughter and my son
and I've been knowing them since they were 7
It was tough to tell them that I thought it was time for me to move on."
Jacksonville made the move back to Class 5A last season for the first time since 2001 and is in a region with semifinalist Leeds and Moody
Sullivan will be tasked with breaking through one of the tougher regions in the classification

Naomi lost everything because ofthe death of her husband and two sons
and theonly person to remain faithful to her was Ruth

Ruth worked the fields of a kind(02:20):and noble man named Boes Boas protected Ruth and showeredher with favor
Now we learn of Ruth and Boaz'sconnection and romance
and their relationship begins a bloodline thatwould change the world forever
As inspired by the Bookof Ruth.Speaker 3 (02:40):Hello
Pastor Prestonwood Baptist Church in Dallas,Texas with today's episode of the Bible in a Year podcast. In our last episode
we heard how Naomi and Ruthjourneyed from Moab to Bethlehem
Ruth had pledgedher loyalty to her mother in law and embraced theGod of Israel as her own god
The two women(03:03):faced a difficult life in their new home
Both werewidowed and they had no children to care for them. They depended on the gleanings from the fields of harvest, which Ruth worked hard to collect
It was there inthe fields that she met a man by the nameof Boaz
knowing(03:23):what she had done for Naomi
and protective of Ruthin her vulnerability as a poor foreigner
And today we'lllearn of a deepening of this relationship and how Boazand Ruth will come together to begin a family linethat will trace all the way to the fulfillment of(03:45):God's promised redeemer
So let's listen to this beautiful love story.Speaker 2 (03:56):Ruth worked the fields of Boaz for weeks
but the kindness and humility he displayedto all his servants and workers
She spoke often ofhim to Naomi and Naomi's heart grew excited for Ruth. She watched her sweet daughter smile as she spoke his(04:16):name and welled with excitement before she left to workthe fields
wiping away a few tears. It is my deepest desire for you to find restfor your heart and hands
You should go to winnobarley tonight with Boaz and the rest of his servants.(04:38):Then after he is ate and drank
you should staythe night along with the others in his household
That will wake him up gracefully,so you two can talk in private
I have afeeling you will know where you stand
She washed her hair and put(04:59):on fresh clothes
and departed gleefully to the threshing floorwhere people were winnowing the barley
She worked and laughedalongside Boaz and the rest of the workers
Ruth and Boaz would meet each other'seyes for a brief moment
The entire house ate together afterwards, and the people began to retreat to their beds to sleep.(05:19):Boaz was the last to leave the dining hall
Hestumbled around the candle lit room and rested his eyeson a heap of grain
Ruth watched from a distanceas Boaz fell into a deep sleep
She gracefully walkedover to the foot of where Boaz lay
she uncovered the blanket from Boaz's feet. The slight breeze came in from the window and tickled(05:41):his toes
Boaz opened his eyes and sat up Immediately. All Boaz could see was a dark figure laying athis feet
Pleasespread your wings over me as a redeemer
Her heartwas beating fast and her hands sweat slightly out of nervousness.(06:04):Boaz was known as a kinsman redeemer
In those days, kinsmen redeemers could marry a widow in place of adeceased relative in order to take care of her
Ruthwas truly asking if Boaz would want to marry her.Ruth could barely see Boaz's smile in the dim candlelight. He sat up more and leaned over towards her and said,(06:24):in all your time here
you have not chased afterall the young men here
worked and been pleasant company.Do not fear and take heart
because everybody knows youare a worthy and beautiful woman
I am not the only redeemerhere in Bethlehem
There is another that lives closer toyou than I
I will speak with him.If he does not wish to redeem you
with only a dim candle and the crescentmoon shining on their faces
Ruth lay there at his(07:07):feet until morning
Boaz sent her off with more barleyfor her and Naomi
and then Ruth left early sonobody would see her lest Boaz lose his honor
Ruthrushed home to bring back good reports to Naomi
Thetwo women laughed and cried with one another
the man(07:28):will not rest until the matter is settled
Boaz rushed in the morning to meetwith the other Redeemer
Boaz sat at the gate ofthe Other Redeemer waiting for him to come out tomeet him
He thought of Ruth while he waited andwatched the sunrise
and kind enoughto take care of her mother in law when she.Speaker 1 (07:49):Didn't have to.Speaker 2 (07:50):He sat and day dreamed
looking blankly in the horizon. The Other Redeemer walked from his home to the gateand sat beside Boez.Speaker 3 (07:58):There.Speaker 2 (07:59):Boaz spoke of Ruth and Naomi and asked if theman would want to redeem her for himself
The manwas willing to redeem Naomi and her property
Boaz was given permission to marry Ruthand redeem her
Boaz did his best to remain composed(08:19):and hide his excitement
and Boaz and Ruthbegan to make arrangements for their wedding
The time had come, and all of Bethlehem was there to witness the unionof Ruth and her redeemer
Ruth(08:42):looked at her redeemer and groom
The two ofthem were married and experienced the bliss and unity of marriage
Together. They conceived a child and named him Obed
Israel's king.Boaz and Ruth's marriage was but a thread in the(09:04):greater tapestry of God's marvelous plan
One day there wouldbe another wedding of swords
The imperfect and broken bridewould stand before her strong and gentle redeemer
A beautifulpicture that reflected a greater truth was unfolding
a pictureof God's love and redemption for his people and theirloving devotion to him in return.Speaker 3 (09:29):We begin today's story with Ruth working hard in the fields, gleaning from Boaz's crops to feed herself and her motherin law
The kindness of Boaz has moved her,and she is drawn attracted to this man
knew her culture well and understood that(09:50):Boaz could be a kinsman redeemer for Ruth
one whomarried a widow after a relative had passed on andthen cared for her
Ruth was now so much morethan an in law to Naomi
She was like a daughter, and Naomi wanted to give her rest from her labor. So Naomi instructed Ruth to wash and annoint herself
and then to wear acloak to hide her appearance
She was to go tothe threshing floor and stay overnight near Boas
so thatwhile he slept she could approach him and uncover hisfeet and wake him
This would provide quiet conversation forthe two of them
Ruth did exactly as she was told,(10:33):and that night
startled and askedwho was sleeping at his feet
I can only imaginewhat a surprise this must have been to find astranger lying so close
This is a very unusual approachto courtship
Then she asked him to spread his wingsas her redeemer
the meeting was clear Ruthwas asking him if he would marry her
He knew she could have goneafter younger men in town
men who were also wealthy,(11:19):but she had chosen him
and he was captivated by her.He wanted to say yes to this request
but hewas also an honorable man and knew there were otherfactors in this kinsman redeemer tradition
issues involving purchase ofthe land that belonged to Elimelech
and thatopportunity should first be offered to another potential redeemer who(11:42):was closer to Naomi's land
Boaz explained all of thisto Ruth and said he would love to say yes,but first must speak to the other man
and if the otherman was unable or unwilling
he would gladly redeem her.Even here we see the kindness of Boas
He was(12:04):telling Ruth that one way or another he would seeto it that she was redeemed
Ruth returned home excitingly, awaiting the outcome
Patiently waiting can be a difficult task.We all know that
But Ruth and Naomi did just that, hopeful but not insistent
