FOR MORE UPDATES ON THE WILDFIRE, GO TO THIS STORY
A small woods fire that began around Barclay Road in Boiling Spring Lakes on Friday
First responders worked throughout Friday night to battle the blaze
high winds Saturday ignited hot spots and the fire escaped containment lines
Sunday has provided some relief thanks to rain in the morning and less wind
A state of emergency remains in Brunswick County
Forest Service works to strengthen containment lines
it has also started an investigation on the cause of the wildfire
“We’re taking advantage of the rain that came in this morning to really work the dry areas around the fire
The dozer crews are steadily churning up the soil and reinforcing single fire lines to multiple lines in hopes of stopping or slowing the spread of the fire,” says Operations Section Chief Jonathan Ambrose in a news release from the N.C
On Saturday morning the wildfire grew due to spotting over containment lines
the fire remains at 10 percent containment
Percent containment represents sections of fire line that pose no escape risk without further action from firefighters
No homes have been destroyed as a result of the wildfire
Flying drones within a TFR designated area is unlawful
Flying a drone near or around a wildfire compromises the safety of pilots and interferes with firefighting efforts
The public is reminded to keep drones away from wildfires
The American Red Cross shelter at South Brunswick High School has closed
American Red Cross’ sheltering team remains on standby in the event an additional shelter is needed due to the wildfire
according to a news release from Brunswick County
Donations keep coming | 4:40 p.m.Several places have come together to provide food and drink donations to people battling the wildfire
at least according to a post from the Brunswick County Government Facebook page

all needs are met for our public safety teams based in Boiling Spring Lakes and we cannot accept any more food or drink donations."
More than 200 personnel representing several fire departments across at least five counties
have been fighting the blaze that started on Friday
it has burned around 1,500 acres and is 10 percent contained
N.C. Forest Service: Fire 10 percent contained | 1:20 p.m.The N.C
Forest Service Incident Management Team assumed command of the wildfire at noon on Sunday as the blaze is at 10 percent containment
firefighters continue fighting the wildfire and are closely monitoring the fire perimeter for spot fires
the wildfire grew due to spotting over containment lines
No homes have been destroyed as a result of this wildfire
Brunswick County Commissioner Mike Forte said early Sunday it was around 1,700 acres
A cold front passing through the area overnight and this morning provided scattered showers and roughly six-tenths of accumulated rainfall over the fire area
active fire was seen in the tree canopy during the early morning hours
smoldering organic soil also has potential to hold fire below the soil surface causing difficulties in extinguishing
Flame potential or reburn in pockets of unburned fuel cannot be ruled out
firefighter crews continued water handling and dozer operations to create additional fire line and reinforce existing fire line
Forest Service aviation fleet supplied water drops on the fire
Though fire lines have been placed around the entirety of the fire
erratic winds and regionally dry conditions have made containment of the fire difficult
A Code Orange air quality alert has been issued for Brunswick County. Information on current air quality data for North Carolina is available at https://www.airnow.gov/
All roads in and around Boiling Spring Lakes remain open
Motorists are encouraged to use extreme caution when traveling around the area as smoky conditions persist and may linger for days around the area of the fire

Brunswick County Commissioner Mike Forte was back at the incident command center early Sunday morning
and he noted that when it comes to the fire's containment level
While Sunday morning's rainfall slowed the fire's progression some
He noted that while the communications tower near Boiling Spring Lakes was in danger Saturday night
located just outside Boiling Spring Lakes' city limits
But crews were able to protect homes and businesses with a chicken coop remaining as the only structure lost
No injuries had been reported as of Sunday morning
Forte said the rain allowed local fire crews a chance to rest for a bit
He said firefighters from Sampson and Duplin counties were on scene Sunday to provide some relief for local crews
A total of 248 personnel were on the scene Friday and 274 were there Saturday
Forest Service was creating a plan of action for Sunday
"We'll have to see what happens once things dry out," Forte said
The latest: Track the Brunswick wildfire

and all evacuation orders have been lifted
The announcement noted that it remains "a working fire," and crews are still on the scene
"Smoke may still be visible and air quality may be affected in some areas -- please continue to use caution," the update stated
It also encouraged residents to stay informed by following the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office mobile app and the county's official social media channels for updates
"A sincere thank you to all the firefighters and emergency personnel who have worked around the clock to contain the fire and keep our community safe," the release stated
A line of storms has reached Southeastern North Carolina
bringing rain and the chance of some relief to battle the wildfire
is expected to remain until at least 8 a.m
with rain chances hovering at 48 percent or better into early afternoon
about 800 acres has burned in the Boiling Spring Lakes area
At least one church and a business will not be open Sunday due to the wildfire
First Baptist Church in Boiling Spring Lakes said it would cancel services Sunday

The shops are open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m
Brunswick County released an update on the wildfire affecting Boiling Spring Lakes and the surrounding areas
“The NC Forest Service continues to respond to the incident through the night with area firefighters and estimates an update on the containment by Sunday morning,” the news release stated
“There are still no reports of damages to or loss of any residences at this time.”
and the status is subject to change based on future conditions
“Ground and aerial firefighting crews will remain on the scene until the fire is controlled,” the release said
A Code Red Air Quality Alert remains in effect for Brunswick County through midnight Saturday
which means that everyone may experience health effect from prolonged exposure
Effects may be more serious for older adults

“Smoky conditions are likely for the next several days for our area,” the release stated
It also noted that law enforcement has issued both mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders for areas affected by the wildfire
Those with a mandatory or voluntary evacuation order will be notified by law enforcement personnel going door-to-door and via phone and text notifications sent to those in affected areas
“Anyone in a voluntary evacuation area should be prepared in the event a mandatory evacuation is issued for your area,” the release said
It also urged residents who are not under an evacuation order to keep windows and doors closed and all pets inside due to smoky conditions
Evacuees in need of shelter may go to South Brunswick High School
87 remained closed from Danford Road to East Boiling Spring Lakes Road
according to Brunswick County Commissioner Mike Forte
who was stationed in the command center in Boiling Spring Lakes
said that conditions have been difficult for firefighters due to the fire's behavior
"It's going against everything a fire's supposed to do," he said
Forte said no homes had been lost and no injuries had been reported
but that has been the only structure lost to the blaze
He praised the firefighters for their dedication and hard work
and the command center's got it down to a science," he said
Forte said fire crews had a plan to dig "massive trenches" and force the fire toward a 4,500-acre tract to burn itself out
Forte said they were not able to implement that plan because the fire changed direction
He noted a blaze flared up near Danford Road
and while rain fell in Southport and some areas of the county
he said the area where the fire is burning hasn't received any
Forte noted the area is projected to receive rain around 4 a.m
"But it doesn't look like it's going to be enough to really help us," he said
Forte said the American Red Cross shelter at South Brunswick High School housed four people and three dogs
The Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department has announced additional evacuations
and Drayton roads should evacuate now and follow the instructions of emergency personnel
Just before 9 p.m., some light rain fell in the Boiling Spring Lakes area. While it was short lived and certainly far from enough to provide relief from the wildfire, it might be a prelude to forecasted showers by 3-4 a.m. Sunday
The Southport Police Department posted a video on its Facebook page on current conditions in Boiling Spring Lakes with the fire near a cell tower off N.C
The wildfire has now burned approximately 800 acres in Boiling Spring Lakes
according to a Facebook post from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office
Some smoke from the wildfire can be seen as far north as the New Hanover/Pender county line
Boiling Spring Lakes Commissioner Justin Lovin said he had recently spoken with Brunswick County Sheriff Brian Chism who is coordinating fire response efforts in the incident command center
Lovin said he last heard that the wildfire was heading north toward unincorporated areas of Brunswick County
Lovin said the areas of Old Mill Creek Road and Mill Creek Road were under mandatory evacuation orders
He added all mandatory evacuation orders for the city of Boiling Spring Lakes remained in effect
Living Word Full Gospel Fellowship in Winnabow opened its facility as a shelter shortly after news of a wildfire came out in Boiling Spring Lakes
And as the blaze continues Saturday, it is now taking donations of drinks such as Gatorade and Propel and snacks to then take to first responders to help
The church's address is 1029 George II Highway in Winnabow
The Walmart in Leland also has a place for donations
Rain in forecast by early Sunday | 5:20 p.m.Relief could be on the way to contain and extinguish the wildfire
the National Weather Service forecasts a 60% chance of precipitation in Boiling Spring Lakes
amounting between half and three quarters of an inch
South wind is expected around nine miles per hour
with the possibility for gusts as high as 17 mph
High winds are forecasted to continue Sunday
with a south wind forecasted between seven to 11 mph during the day
Precipitation is more likely moving into Sunday
with a 90% chance of rainfall during the day
amounting between a half and three quarters of an inch
Brunswick County Commissioner Mike Forte is currently at the incident command center in Boiling Spring Lakes
He said the fire has escaped its containment lines and is burning in both the city of Boiling Spring Lakes and unincorporated areas of Brunswick County
Forte said the winds are gusting at 25 miles per hour
which is making it difficult for firefighters battling the blaze
Forest Service is leading the firefighting efforts
and they are putting together a plan to dig "massive trenches" around a 4500-acre tract of wooded land to drive the fire into that controlled area and let it burn itself out
"God bless these men and women," Forte said of the first responders
He said five blocks of Boiling Spring Lakes are under mandatory evacuation orders
he said voluntary evacuation orders were issued for nearly 200 people living near the blaze

The Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department reports that the following areas/roads are under mandatory evacuation:
Officials have confirmed that the detour route is closed

A burn ban is in effect on Saturday for unincorporated areas of Brunswick County as authorities on the coast continue battling a massive wildfire at Boiling Spring Lake
all burning within 100 feet of any structure is prohibited within unincorporated areas
The town of Leeland also issued a burn ban within town limits
The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office said nearly 800 acres have burned
and the North Carolina Forest Service lists the fire as is 0% contained
and we are grateful for the dedication of every agency involved," said the sheriff's office on Facebook
which started on Friday in the area of West Boiling Spring Road and Sunset Road in Brunswick County
has grown exponentially in the last 24 hours
In an update Friday night
Brunswick County officials said the fire was as big as 200 acres and was considered “100% contained," but dry air and brisk winds helped rekindle the fire
One family said they were forced to evacuated Friday night
and their hopes of returning Saturday were dashed as the fire picked back up
"We were really hoping to get home tonight
it might make sense to continue to have a slumber party over at some family's house," said Nick and Rocky Losasso
Brunswick County and Boiling Spring Lakes both declared a state of emergency due to the fire
and the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office said evacuations are in place for some areas
Authorities are investigating how the fire started

What started as a 5-acre woods fire in Boiling Spring Lakes on Friday, May 2, grew into a wildfire that had burned more than 1,000 acres by Sunday morning.
In the process, several streets were closed, and some were forced to evacuate as Brunswick County declared a state of emergency. By Sunday, roads reopened, and evacuees were allowed back home.
Throughout the weekend, crews battled high winds and dry conditions, which made the fire difficult to contain.
“Though fire lines have been placed around the entirety of the fire, erratic winds and regionally dry conditions have made containment of the fire difficult,” stated a May 4 news release from the N.C. Forest Service.
The fire resulted in evacuations and road closures. The blaze closed roads and resulted in mandatory evacuations for residents in Boiling Spring Lakes and some unincorporated areas of Brunswick County. It also closed some roads, including a portion of N.C. 87 — from Danford Road to E. Boiling Spring Lakes Road.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter for those displaced during the evacuations, and several churches offered their spaces as shelters. Roads reopened and evacuees were permitted to return to their homes early on May 4.
Mike Forte, chairman of the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners, was at the incident command center in Boiling Spring Lakes on Friday and throughout much of the weekend. Forte said as of Sunday, May 4, the only structure lost was a chicken coop. No homes had been damaged, and no injuries had been reported.
He praised the local first responders for their response to the incident.
“They have worked as an incredible team, and the command center’s got it down to a science,” Forte said Sunday.
N.C. Forest Service is now handling the response. The N.C. Forest Service Incident Management Team took command of the fire at noon on Sunday. Prior to that, N.C. Forest Service firefighters were on the scene, with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office leading the incident command center.
Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue, departments from across Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender, Horry (South Carolina), Bladen, Columbus, Duplin, and Sampson counties all responded to the incident.
Prior to the rain, firefighters observed active fire in the tree canopy in the early morning of May 4. “Deep, smoldering organic soil also has the potential to hold fire below the soil surface causing difficulties in extinguishing,” the N.C. Forest Service noted its news release Sunday. “Flame potential or reburn in pockets of unburned fuel cannot be ruled out.”
Firefighters began gaining some control of the blaze on Sunday, and as of Monday morning, it was 10 percent contained.
"Percent containment represents sections of the fire line that pose no escape risk without further action from firefighters," the release stated.
In a video update posted to the N.C. Forest Service's Facebook page on the morning of Monday, May 5, operations section chief trainee David Poole said firefighting efforts on Monday would focus on using heavy equipment to "mop up" existing fire lines to extinguish smoldering pockets of vegetation that may still be capable of spreading fire. Poole noted they would also be using fire department resources to maintain structure protection in some areas of the wildfire.
A Code Orange air quality alert has been issued for Brunswick County through midnight Monday.
According to a news release from the N.C. Forest Service, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
the North Carolina Forest Service said the fire was over 650 acres
