the parents argue that the Boise School District and staff were negligent in their duties to protect students and report any suspicious behavior

the Boise City Council has voted to amend the city code
granting itself greater authority over land use decisions
This decision follows a January ruling by the Idaho Supreme Court
which found the council had improperly approved a conditional use permit for Interfaith Sanctuary's homeless shelter
a decision previously denied by the Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC)
The new code allows council members to reconsider appeals and conditional use permits after the PZC's decisions
The city's planning manager said this will create a new record for each case and will encourage more public engagement
Some testimony from Boise residents in opposition:
Some statements from council members unanimously in favor:
The council's decision comes after a lengthy PZC public hearing last month

Amidst the chaos of transfer portal season
Boise State quietly nabbed their fourth high school commit of the 2025 class in Link Year forward Bhan Buom
Buom transferred to the prestigious Link Year Academy in Missouri to finish out his high school career
The school has a long track record of producing NBA talent
including first-round pick Ja’Kobe Walter and NBA Champion Jordan Walsh
and the Broncos will hope to see similar results out of Buom
Buom comes to the Broncos as a three-star recruit and the 12th-ranked recruit in the state of Missouri
He’s a 6-7 wing with length and athleticism to spare
something the Broncos were sorely missing this past season on the perimeter
but excelled at getting downhill and getting to the basket
Elite speed meant Buom blew by most bigger wings that tried to guard him
and when a defender actually stuck with him
Buom’s size allowed him to finish over and around defenders when attacking the basket
His lateral movement and length are rare at the high school level
meaning most teams didn’t even try to beat him off the dribble
When courageous players did try to get to the basket on him
Buom showed good recovery instincts that led to chase down blocks
the offensive game is still unrefined and likely not ready to contribute day one
he will likely need to add 10 pounds of muscle to hold up against college wings
The tools are there for Leon Rice to mold Buom into a special player
but it will probably be a year or two before Bronco Nation gets to see him shine on the court
Development in college basketball is rare these days
if players don’t get the playing time they want within a year or two
they often hit the portal for “greener” pastures
Boise State is getting a potentially special player
Guys with his length and athleticism are hard to find
his skillset as a lengthy scoring wing and lockdown defender reminds me of former Bronco Abu Kigab
While his commitment process may not have had the publicity or glamor of some of the other members of this 2025 class
I think Buom’s inclusion gives the Broncos a prospect with legitimate NBA upside with proper development
but few coaches at the mid-major level have had more success than Leon Rice at maximizing a player’s offensive skillset

Ahmed Hassanein spoke almost no English when he moved back to the United States from Egypt in 2018
and overcoming that language barrier helped fuel his rise as an NFL draft prospect
Boise State defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said Hassanein, a sixth-round pick by the Detroit Lions in last week's draft, took things so literally while learning the language it made him one of the Broncos' best run defenders
we just beat it into him that you got to earn the right to rush to passer," Chinander told the Free Press in a phone interview this week
"If you say that to some kids and they're like
'We are going to earn the right to rush to passer right here.' So he enjoys the run game."
More: What Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes said about 2025 NFL draft class and what it means
Hassanein, who led Boise State and ranked second nationally with 22 sacks the past two seasons, was Pro Football Focus' 52nd-ranked defensive end in college football last season but 39th against the run
He played as Boise's field-side defensive end
the bigger of the two edge-setters in the Broncos' defense
and earned a PFF run grade of 80.3 while making 48 tackles
"He's violent in the run game," Chinander said
He's got really good footwork in the run game
The Lions return their top three defensive ends from last season in Aidan Hutchinson
but Hassanein could vie for a backup role on the edge this fall
having played just six seasons of organized football − two in high school and four at Boise State
the Broncos' defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator the past two seasons
said Hassanein is just scratching his potential as player
"He wants to do exactly what you say and it was kind of cool cause some people are a little afraid of some of the international guys cause it's going to take them a while
And not to say that we know everything about football
His new coaches may coach him a little differently
but he wanted to do exactly what we told him to
"The only thing you got to be careful of is he is going to do exactly what you say and he's going to write down everything you say."
A CrossFit athlete who dabbled in martial arts in Egypt before moving to America to live with his brother as a high school sophomore
Hassanein had to learn some of the basics of defensive line play like how to disengage from a block and how to properly strike a sled once he got to college
Hassanein spent hours on his own trying to replicate practice techniques
"until he feels like he's got it well enough to perform the next day in front of his teammates."
Lions general manager Brad Holmes praised first-round pick the team's first-round pick, Tyleik Williams, as one of the two most instinctive defensive tackles in this year's draft
Hassanein doesn't have nearly the same instincts given his inexperience
but Chinander said Hassanein's big sack totals the past two years − 12.5 in 2023 and 9.5 last fall - are a product of his growing understanding of the game
"I think the biggest thing for him is like when you're coming out of high school and a lot of kids have played a lot more football than him
but when they hear you're the contain rusher
sometimes in high school it's like now you're going to rush outside this tackle," Chinander said
"He's really started to figure out knowing the set line
I have to contain the quarterback so I can take what this guy gives me
So I think that that's a thing that's constantly evolving with him."
Chinander said Hassanein favors speed-to-power moves
using his long arm to drive back tackles and leaning on a "pretty good" double-swipe − hand techniques that translated easily from his CrossFit and martial arts background − to defeat pass blocks
A former assistant defensive line coach with the Philadelphia Eagles
Chinander compared Hassanein to ex-Eagles and Indianapolis Colts defensive end Trent Cole
a violent edge-setter against the run who lacked the twitchiness and bend of some of the league's best pass rushers but still had 90.5 sacks in his 12-year career
"I think the Lions are going to get a guy that can help them probably early," Chinander said
"But I think he's going to be one of those guys
that there's going to be a bunch of guys that probably got drafted higher that won't last even a fraction of what his career will be."

Editor's note: The Detroit Lions selected Ahmed Hassanein with the No
making him the first Egyptian ever drafted into the NFL
AHMED HASSANEIN'S JOURNEY to the doorstep of the NFL began on a balcony seven years ago in Cairo around a hookah
With the roar of Cairo International Airport in the distance
brother and nephew trading puffs in the sixth-floor penthouse they grew up in overlooking the Heliopolis suburb
about Hassanein's life over the past decade after moving from California at age 6
Hassanein had forgotten how to speak English
had behavioral issues that caused him to be expelled from school
who he said had a substance abuse disorder
and she was really verbally abusive and physically abusive."
Hassanein took solace in sports including breakdancing
He became the top-ranked CrossFit athlete in Egypt and one of the best in Africa
It also helped him cultivate a strong work ethic
who was 30 at the time and making his first trip to Egypt in 20 years
After hearing from his siblings that night -- June 26
2018 -- Besch started formulating a plan to get Hassanein
what if he came and lived with me and played football for me?'" said Besch
who coached at Loara High School in Anaheim
who was set to attend Riverside Preparatory
and it's going to be one of the most difficult things you've ever done because the culture shock is going to be there
you can't speak English very well,'" Hassanein said
During a family vacation at a resort on the Red Sea later that week
Besch helped convince their father to let him move away 7,500 miles
Fast-forward to today and -- despite initial language barriers, lack of football knowledge and playing the sport for the first time as a sophomore in high school -- Hassanein is on the verge of becoming the first Egyptian to be drafted into the NFL. ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller has the former Boise State defensive end
"It was surreal to think that we just dreamed this to save Ahmed and get him to the U.S.
like 'Project Mission: Get Ahmed to the U.S.,' and then it was 'Mission: Get Ahmed into College,' and now it's 'Mission: Get Ahmed into the NFL,'" Gigi said from her apartment in Cairo
"But it's all surreal because who would've thought that Ahmed would be great at being a defensive lineman in American football when literally seven years ago
he was just sitting on the balcony praying that someone would ..
Ahmed Hassanein had scholarship offers from Fresno State
Kansas and Colorado before eventually choosing Boise State. Troy Wayrynen-Imagn ImagesTHE CULTURE SHOCK was real for Hassanein when he moved in with Besch in August 2018
Everything from the food to the language to school was different
All Hassanein knew about the sport was what Besch had posted on social media
most recently playing in a second-tier Austrian league from March to June 2018
"People run and hit each other," Hassanein recalled
explaining everything from how to put on his pads
helmet and mouth guard to the sport's rules
"Everything from line of scrimmage to downs to your role and responsibility on the defense," Besch said
"And I don't think everything was explained explicitly because you don't ever go back and explain the X's and O's in high school
Hassanein didn't know how to get in a stance or how to catch a ball
His school's football program was in one of the lower levels in California and didn't have the resources other schools around them had
Each coach was in charge of multiple positions
and most of the kids didn't play football before ninth grade because there wasn't a youth program in the district
"It's like the kid got pulled off of Mars and started playing football," Olson said
Olson saw the potential in the 16-year-old sophomore
at defensive tackle on the junior varsity team for the first game of the season before moving him up to varsity
"The journey that dude made and the guts that he had to do
the things that he did to get to where he is
Hassanein's high school coach. Photo by Marc Sanchez/Icon SportswireHassanein had at least one penalty every game because of his unfamiliarity with the rules
There was a game in which he grabbed a quarterback's face mask to bring him down and another in which he tripped the quarterback
kicking people and flipping them like in jiujitsu
"I was out there just doing whatever," Hassanein said
In fall 2018, Hassanein was watching highlights of former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald
"What high school does he go to?" Hassanein asked his brother
that's the National Football League.' I was like
you know you don't have a D-line coach at your high school and you don't have a sled?'"
he devised a plan: Hassanein began waking up at 5 a.m
he'd go to practice -- either football or basketball
depending on the season -- and then go back to the gym for three to four hours a night
Everything started to click for Hassanein midway through his sophomore season
Olson and defensive coordinator Jonathan Rangel decided
was to let Hassanein's natural strength make up for whatever technique he lacked
where he was facing -- and outplaying -- prospects from top high school programs around Southern California such as St
Hassanein studied pass-rush moves on YouTube and implemented them the next day
Colleges noticed the three-star pass rusher
as his senior season was postponed until the spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic
Hassanein received a direct message from Spencer Danielson
Besch played football with Danielson at Azusa Pacific University
Hassanein relayed that information to Danielson
and they hopped on a Zoom call to explain the situation
Hassanein had scholarship offers from Fresno State
Kansas and Colorado before eventually choosing Boise State
Had Hassanein's life followed his initial plan of going to military school
he thought he'd return to Egypt after four years
he was living out a dream he never knew he had
"It meant the world to me that somebody believed
but it gave me confirmation that I can do this," Hassanein said
"I took it as a challenge because I had a lot of family members say
How the hell are you going to play football?'
Boise State's Ahmed Hassanein had 9.5 sacks in the 2024 season. Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesDANIELSON STOOD OUTSIDE Boise State's football facility on a June morning in 2021 with a hope and a prayer
neither Danielson nor any of his coaches were able to recruit Hassanein in person
so the first time they met him was when he stepped out of the car that day
Sitting in the back of Danielson's mind was the fact that Besch was 5-foot-8
"I'm waiting for him at the front of the facility like
Please be 6-3,'" Danielson recalled to ESPN
"If he pops out and he's 5-9 and Cory got me
"And he pops out and he just looks like a Greek god
Hassanein looked like some of the Broncos' juniors and was lifting more weight than a number of the upperclassmen
Boise State edge coach Jabril Frazier said
"He didn't know what was going on," Frazier said
Danielson's way of rectifying that was with his "Football School," a weeklong program leading into fall camp for all of Boise State's incoming freshmen
It covered everything from the width of the field -- 53.3 yards -- to the verbiage Boise State's coaches prefer to the fundamentals of tackling to A
he relied on his natural ability to dominate
He had to account for how the offensive lineman across from him lined up and blocked in every possible scenario and what kind of offense he was facing on a weekly basis
It was essentially Football 101 for Hassanein
Hassanein finished with 12.5 sacks and was mentioned among the nation's best pass rushers
he was coming off labrum surgery and spent the spring watching his own film and breaking down his games while he rehabbed
"I currently have him projected as a late fifth- to early sixth-round pick as teams are always looking for pass-rush help," ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid said
"Hassanein will likely be a part of special teams early on during his career while he searches to earn a role as a contributor on defense."
Hassanein is on the verge of making international history
it will be an emotional moment for those who helped him on the journey
but he says he thinks his strength will help him become a disruptive pass rusher at the next level
Danielson described Hassanein as "one of the most violent run defenders we've ever had here," pointing to the Broncos' first defensive play of the Fiesta Bowl against Penn State
It was first-and-10 from the Nittany Lions' 28-yard line when Penn State tight end Tyler Warren went in motion from left to right, overloading the side closest to Hassanein. It was a run and, with a running start, Hassanein bulldozed Warren back four yards, throwing him to the ground in the process.
To Danielson, that play is everything teams need to know about Hassanein.
"Once he gets there, he's going to be all over the coaches about being better, getting better, getting help," Frazier said. "Give him a year to two years in the NFL and you'll be hearing his name a lot."

The resolution comes after Idaho passed House Bill 96
which prohibits cities and other governmental entities from displaying "unauthorized flags."
"The passing of HB96 has already created division
and conflicts across the state and across our city," McLean said

Posts have been circulating social media in Idaho lately about owls and hawks being seen perched in neighborhoods looking to make a meal out of area house pets. We looked at several resources, including the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, as well as some other reputable wildlife sources to figure out which
if any Idaho birds of prey are a genuine threat to domestic pets like cats and small dogs
If you want to avoid a possible run-in with your pets and raptors
you should be aware of what types of birds are in your area
Barn owls can be common in rural residential areas but are much less threatening than an eagle; however
an eagle is less likely to be present in urban landscapes
Even if you live in a rural area that is home to birds of prey
even large raptors generally aren't looking at your pets as a meal
While cats tend to be more susceptible due to their smaller size
most raptors aren't looking to go toe-to-toe with an evolved adult predator
but they are more likely looking for ground squirrels and mice than they are your pets
After delving through as many reports as we could find
the general rule is that everything but the very smallest of dog breeds and the smallest cats (kittens) are at the greatest risk
Even dogs as little as 10 pounds are considered to be safe
