our team provided real-time cost and schedule updates throughout the design development
allowing us to reduce the impact of extreme market volatility by adjusting project scope.”

KSHB 41 reporter Rachel Henderson covers neighborhoods in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties. Share your story idea with Rachel
Students and parents in the Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Unified School District 204 say a bus incident Tuesday added to an already tense time regarding school safety
USD 204 is not the only school district in the Kansas City area to experience school threats
but the timing of a recent bus incident did not help ease tensions
“It’s been a lot for our school overall,” said Ariella Lutz
“We’ve had three violent threats to our school recently
the whole school is all over the place talking about all this stuff right now.”
incident was carrying 17 Clark Middle School and Bonner Springs High School students
but she didn’t ride Tuesday due to a doctor’s appointment
but one student reported a small abrasion on their arm and another reported a small abrasion on their finger
Lutz lives close by to the intersection of 8th Street and Beach Street where the incident happened
Rankin’s security camera captured video after the incident occurred
The bus driver made a tight turn to get around some tree service trucks in the road
“That's probably why she had some problems coming around the corner,” Rankin said
Rankin was grateful to hear no students were severely hurt
but he also expressed compassion for the driver
“The bus driver has got a lot of responsibilities
As a long-time resident in that neighborhood
Rankin knows how much trouble that corner causes
“It’s really been a nuisance for people coming around this corner
especially how sharp the corner is,” Rankin said
her friends and a driver she didn’t recognize
“I was shocked because it was the bus driver's first day,” Lutz said
The school district confirmed it was the driver’s first day driving the route
it also confirmed the driver passed the state test for a Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) on Monday — the day before the incident — which requires weeks of training
“The driver has an additional six hours behind the wheel that the trainer spent with them just doing extra obstacles and route learning,” the email read
Parents KSHB 41's Rachel Henderson spoke with seemed more upset about how the incident played out
the bus driver called the district’s transportation team first
a student had to call 9-1-1 and parents felt communication from the district was not timely and downplayed the incident
the district notified families about the incident
The district’s statement goes on to explain how it followed up with the driver and students Wednesday:
It ended its statement with a plea to families and offered context on any future protocol:
Lutz says she can attest to misinformation spreading rapidly this school year
“It’ll keep going and then it’ll be wrong by the time it gets to the last person,” she said
She was back on the bus Wednesday and said while she was nervous
she wants to see everyone get along and not be rude to one another when conflict arises
she would like the adult present contact law enforcement
let students know it’s okay to contact their parents/use their phones and treat students with respect
“I just want everyone to be safe,” Lutz said

(KCTV) - A Bonner Springs woman was injured after her SUV hit an overhead sign on the way into the ditch of I-70 in Kansas City
The Kansas Highway Patrol says that around 2 p.m
emergency crews were called to the area of westbound I-70 and I-635 with reports of a single-vehicle collision
had been driving her 2010 Ford Escape west in the middle lane of I-70 when she lost control of the SUV and veered off the interstate
Investigators noted that the Ford struck an overhead sign as it went into the ditch. Alston was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center with suspected minor injuries
She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash
Kansas lawmakers heard an update on a theme park being developed by Mattel
the toy company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels
The park is working with the city and state to secure Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) Bonds to help pay for the project
Mattel Adventure Park Kansas City would be the manufacturer’s second theme park, with a location near Phoenix, Arizona, expected to open later this year
which is developed in partnership with Epic Resort Destinations
is slated to have a Hot Wheels-themed roller coaster
Thomas the Tank Engine attractions and a Barbie Beach House-themed retail experience
“Mattel Adventure Park Kansas City will bring our iconic brands to life with epic roller coasters
The 180-acre tourist destination is proposed at the intersection of 118th Street and State Avenue west of the Kansas Speedway. Mattel said the destination could start construction by the end of the year and open by 2026
Bonner Springs approved of a STAR Bond district boundary
which would allow the state to award funds to businesses that will be repaid over time with the sales taxes generated by in-district businesses
Epic Resort Destinations said in addition to the theme park
a rainforest-themed nature attraction and hotels
The estimated project cost is $490 million
but no commitments have been made regarding how much will be funded by STAR Bonds
The ordinance approving the district in Bonner Springs didn't “obligate the city to any financial commitments or incentives” at the time
The developer’s budget documents submitted to Bonner Springs say that up to $386 million of the project costs can be covered with private debt and equity
with the remaining $101 million financed through STAR Bonds
The state would cover most of the STAR Bond costs at $71 million
with Bonner Springs contributing $29 million
Lawmakers ask if park would overlap with other STAR Bond effortsLawmakers ensured that the project would have bonds issued before the STAR Bond program sunsets in 2026
The state could renew the program in the 2025 legislative session
They also asked whether the proposed STAR Bond districts would overlap with the several other STAR bond-financed projects in the Village West area

Right across the street from the proposed Mattel Park is the American Royal Barbeque grounds
which is also working to finalize a complete project plan before STAR Bonds are issued
but the intent is that they don’t overlap,” said Rachel Willis
director of legislative affairs for the Kansas Department of Commerce
The Legislative Division of Post Audit also said the program failed to meet goals to generate out-of-state tourist activity
“That significantly limits their ability to generate new revenues for the state,” the report said
“Local tourist attractions clearly have value
but legislators will have to consider the extent to which they’re willing to have the state finance these projects through STAR bonds.”
the Department of Commerce criticized the report for excluding Village West STAR Bond districts in its review
which have been the program’s biggest success stories
They also said while STAR Bonds are intended to bring in tourists
that the report should’ve put greater emphasis on general and economic welfare
