NEW YORK — The New York Yankees have dropped back-to-back series against American League East opponents
The Tampa Bay Rays came to the Bronx and took two of three from the Yankees
and the struggling Baltimore Orioles also took two of three before that
The Yankees had their chances to win the series late in Sunday’s game
but they could not rally from an early 5-0 deficit and fell 7-5
We’ll get into the decision that most fans were left scratching their heads over
The biggest at-bat for the Yankees came in the bottom of the eighth inning with backup catcher J.C
The Yankees trailed 7-3 and had the bases loaded with no outs after Aaron Judge led off the inning with a double
Cody Bellinger walked and Paul Goldschmidt and Jasson Domínguez singled
Rays right-handed reliever Edwin Uceta was on the mound; he is devastating against righties
and lefties have fared better in his career
Austin Wells and Ben Rice were available and on the bench for the Yankees to use in a pinch hitting situation
but manager Aaron Boone chose to have Escarra hit in the biggest moment
effectively killing a chance for a big inning
Here is how Boone explained why he chose to have Escarra hit with the bases loaded and no outs:
“We’re staying away from (injured) Anthony (Volpe)
so I’m choosing between Escarra and (Jorbit) Vivas there
I’m just going to take the guy that’s been here and more experienced
but then he was the tying run again there with (Oswaldo Cabrera)
Boone said he was staying away from Volpe after injuring his shoulder in Saturday’s game
There’s a possibility he could be available for Monday’s game against the San Diego Padres
that means the Yankees were playing a man short
Boone then said he was choosing between pinch hitting for Escarra or Vivas
He admitted to planning on pinch hitting Rice for Vivas
Boone is suggesting he had scripted the decision before the Escarra at-bat
he found it unnecessary to pinch hit for Vivas
It still doesn’t make sense why Boone wouldn’t want a better hitter in place of Escarra for the most critical at-bat of the game
so let’s look at it even deeper using other scenarios at play
The cleanest decision Boone could have made is pinch hitting Wells for Escarra
Wells simply catches the following inning (which he did anyway) and Boone still has Rice on the bench if needed as an emergency catcher
Boone initially planned on pinch hitting for Vivas
but he stayed in the game and hit a two-run single for his first career hit
pitched around Rice and unintentionally walked him on four consecutive pitches out of the strike zone
Oswald Peraza then hit into a force play to end the inning
Pinch hitting Rice in that moment was a waste
Rays manager Kevin Cash knows Peraza is the worse hitter
and he’d rather his reliever face him than the hot-hitting Rice
Escarra took over on defense at third base
It’s impossible to know what would have transpired if the Yankees had pinch hit for Escarra
but Boone’s decision could have burned their chances for winning Sunday’s game
out for several weeks with a strained oblique
the Yankees’ choosing not to sign a major-league-quality infielder in the offseason is glaring
They planned on having DJ LeMahieu at third base
which would have put Cabrera in the super-utility role instead of as the daily starter at third
But LeMahieu injured his calf in his first spring training game
Peraza and Reyes are a combined 11-for-56 (.196) in limited action
Vivas was more of a light-contact hitter in the minor leagues
and he finished in the 16th percentile in average exit velocity in Triple A last season
He did come through in the eighth inning Sunday
Jorbit's first base-hit in the Big Leagues 👊 pic.twitter.com/6VCPaOuzkK
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) May 4, 2025
The Yankees had to have known LeMahieu was near the end of his career
He has trended downward since 2020 and has sustained several lower-body injuries in the past few seasons
Even without knowing LeMahieu would get hurt in 2025
it was unwise for the club to pencil him in as its starter
LeMahieu is on a rehab assignment and could be back in the big leagues soon
General manager Brian Cashman told reporters near the end of spring training that he was still looking for a right-handed bat to add
It should have happened earlier in the offseason
and now the Yankees’ depth will be tested because of the lack of activity
The results have not been there for Will Warren
He allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings Sunday
Nothing about that line suggests there’s much to be positive about with the inexperienced starter
Warren has four plus pitches with his fastball
That is quite the foundation for a young pitcher because it says he has the tools to be successful with some tweaking
It’s obvious his approach against left-handed batters must improve
It is reminiscent of the early struggles of Clarke Schmidt and Michael King
who also had above-average stuff and figured out how to be successful in the big leagues
Warren might never figure out how to be an adequate big-league pitcher
but it’s too early for him to be crossed off and seen as an afterthought
He has the makings to be a good pitcher in this league
but he can get there if he reaches his potential
The same cannot be said about Carlos Carrasco
The 38-year-old has had a long career in the league
The Yankees are skipping Carrasco’s start Tuesday by pitching Schmidt in his place
Schmidt was supposed to start Saturday’s game
but they pushed him back after he experienced soreness on his left side
they’ll have him take over for the struggling veteran
Carrasco pitched three innings in relief Sunday
but Boone said there’s nothing to read into that decision
He’ll probably slot back into the rotation next weekend
(Photo of Trent Grisham: Jim McIsaac / Getty Images)
Everywhere you looked Sunday at Yankee Stadium
there were clues to the Yankees’ eventual demise in a 7-5 loss to the Rays
dressed as a Jedi for the Star Wars Day promo giveaway
rehabbing from season-ending Tommy John surgery
donned pinstripes for his first dugout cameo
though he has yet to address the media since having his $324 million right UCL repaired
as the Gold Glove shortstop was taking the afternoon to recover from his shoulder-popping dive a day earlier
who is out for the next month or more because of not one
But those account only for the Yankees with doctor’s notes
Harder to explain is why with all of these holes
and going with a Volpe-less shorthanded roster for the series finale against a pesky division rival
manager Aaron Boone still chose to sit two of his most dangerous bats in Ben Rice and Austin Wells
a Sunday matinee is typically the standard spot in the schedule to give guys a breather
But this occasion felt like a good time to buck that trend
you won’t see the Yankees ignore their load-management police
Those worrisome gaps in the batting order were the root of the Yankees’ problems
but the infield alignment minus Volpe also was costly
as was Boone’s curious use of his short bench when one swing could have flipped the outcome in the eighth inning
or what amounted to the Yankees’ last real chance to erase the day’s earlier blunders
when Judge’s leadoff double ignited a string of three hits and a walk
bringing the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded and none out
dictated it should be either Wells or Rice
two excellent options just sitting there on the bench
who promptly tapped a second-pitch changeup right back to the mound for a room-service 1-2-3 double play
“I’m choosing between Escarra and [Jorbit] Vivas there
and just going to take the guy that’s been here and more experienced,” said Boone
who was weighing which one to hit for — then picked neither
Then he was the tying run again there with [Oswaldo Cabrera].”
here’s how the rest of Boone’s frame unfolded
Next up was Vivas — who first entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh for Pablo Reyes — and he smoked a two-run single that cut the Yankees’ deficit to 7-5
Boone then went with Rice to hit for Cabrera — hence the need for Escarra at third — and the subsequent walk left the tying runs on for No
Given that Escarra was coming up with nobody out
Boone figured he had more leeway with that spot and could wait on the big guns
and even though Vivas kept him alive with a big hit
It looked even worse when the manager had to burn two players anyway
who moved behind the plate as Escarra took over for Cabrera at third
Complicating matters was the shaky physical status of Volpe
whom Boone didn’t want to use unless the Yankees took the lead
because they were unsure of his ability to swing a bat after Saturday’s shoulder injury
“If we got ahead in the game and we needed him for defense or running
“But we were pretty disciplined in wanting to stay away from him [Sunday].”
Volpe was missed — and not just because of that eighth inning
fumbled away a grounder for an error that led to the Rays’ first run and later — after a nifty diving stop behind second base — comically spiked a throw off the mound when he tried to gun down another runner at the plate
the Rays were punching grounder after grounder through holes in the infield
As much as third base has been a concern for the Yankees
try playing for an extended period without Volpe and Chisholm
“They kind of hit the ball where we weren’t,” a frustrated Warren said
there were way too many Yankees missing Sunday
or just not in the right places at the right time

Quinta Brunson played it cool despite internally nerding out about being back on Saturday Night Live, an assignment she clearly cherishes, while Benson Boone likely didn't move the public opinion needle about his brand of contrived, retro karate-oriented pop music. Here's everything that happened on SNL this week.
Donald Trump's first 100 days were satirized with an address by James Austin Johnson as the president. Mikey Day soon appeared as creepy aide Stephen Miller, armed with a series of executive orders, which were all preposterously offensive. Marcello Hernández also showed up as the spineless Marco Rubio who, as usual, dutifully and in great pain, did the president's bidding. Some nice riffs on Connections and A Christmas Carol were mixed into this solid open.
SNL superfan Quinta Brunson made her second appearance as a host, and took a moment to tout her recent honorary university degree. She made some funny jokes about being short and then sang a song about being 4'11." Fellow shorty Sabrina Carpenter made a brief (short) cameo, and they each made some dad jokes about shortness. Even Dwayne Wade, who is notably tall, turned up to celebrate shortness, all of which was surprising and funny.
A riff on Bill & Ted found Marcello Hernández and Andrew Dismukes playing the titular characters, who were saying farewell to historical figures who were being sent back to their respective time periods. Kenan Thompson and Brunson portrayed Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, who stubbornly and hilariously didn't wish to return to their time in America, which was particularly racist. A smart sketch.
In this remote ad, Kenan Thompson and Brunson played parents of a young couple and told them about their financial planning for their grandchildren's futures. A play on OnlyFans, this pleasant sounding commercial was really a disturbing promo for a voyeuristic seniors sex service, which was rather shocking and clever.
Chloe Fineman and Emil Wakim played leaders of a Leadership Summit teaching employees about "compliment sandwiches," which went awry quickly, as the employees said very wrong things to each other. Things took another kind of turn when Bowen Yang's bizarre, recurring time-travelling character appeared to ask an inappropriate question, and then even the session leaders submitted to this amusing madness.
In this remote, many of the women in the cast joined Brunson in this satire of saying goodbye to your youth when you're in your early 30s, which is a confusing time, fashion-wise. This was fine.
Riffing on the viral "100 men vs. one gorilla" debate, Brunson and Ego Nwodim played attitudinal women who entered a gorilla enclosure at a zoo and tried sassing a gorilla to death, which did not work out in their favour. This was a bit incomprehensible really, but also not terrible in a Mad TV kinda way.
Backflipping and cringe-y 1980s anthem lover Benson Boone made the most of his SNL debut with a brash stage show for "Sorry I'm Here for Someone Else," which even incorporated Brunson for a spell after her intro.
For his second performance, Boone and his band played "Mystical Magical," which owed more than a little to Olivia Newton-John's "Physical," with vague bits of Queen thrown in too. Adeptly performed, but rather unoriginal.
Colin Jost began with a bit about Trump posting AI photos of himself as the Pope, while Michael Che mocked Pam Bondi's fentanyl claims. Jost introduced a segment called Oh Hell No!, in which he ranted about Trump's statements about doll shortages at Christmas.
Che told us about the racist Homeland Security department, while Jost mocked Trump's Columbus Day pronouncements. Che told a good Ye joke.
Michael Longfellow stopped by to discuss a new government rule about travelling with "real ID" and his protest against it. Longfellow ranted and railed against this rule and his lack of work at SNL this season. This turned into a remarkable bunch of airport and flying jokes, which was great.
Jost reported on an army jet falling into the ocean and made a curious Osama Bin Laden joke before Che had a good Harriet Tubman bit. After a slew of jokes that earned groans, Che introduced us to two Applebees Barflies, Darlene and Duke. Sarah Sherman and Bowen Yang played this trashy couple, who lamented about the economic hardship the restaurant chain was enduring, but while they didn't make a great case for such chains, they were funny, and even Benson Boone got in on the act.
At a group meeting for addicts, Brunson played the session leader and Kenan Thompson played Marcus, a cocaine addict desperate to obtain some cocaine and trying to gather info about how to do so via the other participants. Thompson is almost always great starring in anything and, despite the weak premise here, he made it work.
James Austin Johnson played the host of a show about sports history and profiled fictional boxer Jerry "Jackrabbit" Tulane, who was known for his witty repartee. Played by Brunson, Tulane wasn't so sharp and apparently not much of a boxer. Brunson was made to portray a progressively CTE-addled boxer, which was darkly amusing.

We want to do everything we can to get him right because we know how good he is and how valuable he's going to be for us."
That ended Williams' night after 12 pitches
He fell behind in the count 3-1 to Springer
He walked off the mound to heavy booing from the home crowd
"Just nothing's working right now," said Williams
who has an 11.25 ERA across 10 appearances this season
"And all I can do is continue to work and hopefully get some better results here."
The Yankees acquired Williams, 30, from the Milwaukee Brewers in December to replace Clay Holmes as closer in his final season before reaching free agency next winter
a breakout star down the stretch and through October last season
the Yankees envisioned a shutdown back end of the bullpen
Williams made a resounding impact on the franchise before throwing a pitch in a game that mattered when he served as the catalyst behind the scenes to have Yankees brass change the longstanding no-beard policy during spring training

That pitcher posted a 1.83 ERA over six seasons with the Brewers behind a mystifying screwball-like changeup known as The Airbender
Williams has historically struggled early in the season -- he entered Friday with a 4.08 career ERA between March and April
his worst by far in any month -- but these struggles have been different
after missing the first four months of the season with a back injury
Williams faced 88 batters and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits over 21⅔ innings
he has faced 44 batters and yielded 10 earned runs on 12 hits across eight innings

A year after holding batters to a .133 batting average and .488 OPS
opponents are hitting .343 with a .912 OPS
"It's not a good feeling not to be able to get the job done for the team

Asked if the crowd's reaction bothered him
Williams said he didn't "have an opinion on it."

but 'still expecting great things'April 26th
We’ll try to do what’s best for the team and Devin,” Boone said
“We’ll just get through this bump in the road
The implosion marked Williams’ first blown save in five chances as a Yankee. But he has struggled in several other outings, including coughing up a four-run lead against the Rays last Saturday in Tampa
Williams has allowed 12 runs (10 earned) in eight innings
It hasn’t helped that opposing hitters have a .462 batting average against his four-seamer and have hit .273 against the Airbender changeup
“Nothing’s working right now,” Williams said Friday night
not to be able to get the job done for the team
“I know the results haven’t been great yet,” Boone said
The profile of the changeup is still there
Once he starts flipping that and starts getting some count leverage
I expect him to be the dominant closer he has been.”

“Sorry I’m Here for Someone Else.” But he added a unique touch that isn’t usually seen on the show
After being introduced by show host Quinta Brunson
Boone started his performance by doing a flip off a white table
with Brunson giving Boone a flirty look over her shoulder before he headed onstage to a mic stand that was set up in front of his band
Fans reacted with comments on a YouTube clip of the performance, with some noting it is rare to see the musical guest interact with the SNL host until the “goodnights” at the end of the show
“Other than Ian McKellan jamming out to Kylie Minogue’s 2003 performance of ‘Can’t Get You Outta My Head’ on SNL
I cannot remember a host being visible during even a few seconds of the performance of the musical guest,” one viewer noted
