BOONVILLE — Jonathan Batts called this moment "surreal." A fitting descriptor considering how much Boonville High School and its football program mean to him
The 2008 graduate was named the Pioneers' next head football coach during Monday's Warrick County School Corp
The long-time assistant takes over one of the more consistent programs of the past decade in the Pocket Athletic Conference
More: Brandon Neighbors chosen to be next South Spencer High School football coach
The opportunity to lead his alma mater as a first-year head coach is not lost on Batts
He spent the past eight years as an assistant for coach Darin Ward
"This program and community mean a lot to me
I’m committed to building upon the success coach Ward put in place
got his high school coaching start at Bosse High School from 2013-16 under Andre Thomas and Eric Schnur
He returned to Warrick County the following year and never left
Batts was primarily the Pioneers' defensive backs coach and called plays for the back end of the defense
He is also listed as an assistant coach in boys basketball
He doesn't need to look far in order the blueprint to a successful program. Ward, who stepped down in March following a 10-year run at his alma mater
concluded with 59 victories and won the Big Eight championship in 2018
Boonville reached the sectional championship game three times and only had one losing record the past decade
Ward's impact on Batts goes beyond the football field
"My biggest takeaways from him are what commitment is
The level of commitment it takes to be successful and compete for championships
I have a wife and two young kids of my own
He taught me how to manage family and football
The knowledge I’ve gained under him the last eight years is invaluable."
Batts is pushing them internally from the start
Boonville went 6-6 last season and lost in the Class 4A sectional championship
who haven't won a postseason title in 21 years
return a small but impactful senior class that will be complemented by a large junior class
Among their top returners will be four All-Pocket Athletic Conference selections: quarterback/defensive back Grant Davis
tight end Tyler Klaner (Northern Illinois commit)
defensive lineman Axton Hudson and running back Nolan McKinney
Batts also understands firsthand the challenge ahead of him
The PAC is consistently among the tougher conferences Indiana
The Big School Division itself has produced a pair of state champions (Gibson Southern and Heritage Hills) since 2021
Boonville also has other tough non-conference opponents next year in Paoli
The key to continued success is building depth at all levels of the program
"It starts in strength in numbers," Batts said
It’s building classes like that and stacking classes upon each other
I’m hoping going forward to create depth behind those guys to continue to be successful."

Mark Messmer’s office asked employees at the Boonville Public Library to call the police on constituents during a mobile office hours event – even though the mostly older attendees weren’t breaking any rules
the library’s director confirmed Wednesday
Director Brooke Bolton told the Courier & Press she refused the request
“We told them that (the constituents) had not broken any of the rules of our library and we would not call the police unless the rules of our library were being broken,” she said
“I didn’t see or witness anything that was hostile.”
Mobile office hours usually provide voters a chance to speak to representatives of their elected officials and express concerns
Two staffers for the Eighth District Republican were at the library
but they repeatedly declined to meet with more than one constituent at a time
Bolton said the request to contact authorities came not from the staffers on hand, but via a phone call to the library from a Washington, D.C. area code. She identified the person she spoke with as Michael Curcio. The website LegiStorm lists Curcio as Messmer’s chief of staff
A spokesperson for Messmer didn’t respond to a request for a comment Wednesday. It’s just the latest bit of silence from the congressman, who has repeatedly declined to speak to the Courier & Press
was one of about 15 people in attendance Tuesday
She took several videos of exchanges with Messmer's staff that she forwarded to the Courier & Press
She said the trouble started when she and others wanted to meet with the reps as a group so everyone could hear their questions or concerns
only agreeing to meet with people one at a time in a room so tiny she described it as a “closet.”
“They had picked the smallest room in the building,” she said
“… They wouldn’t let married couples go in together.”
the staffers turned down several offers from library workers to move them to a larger room so they could accommodate more people
Eventually they gave in and shifted to a conference room
but they still wouldn't let in more than one person at a time
Bickle said the Messmer staffers barred all recording devices and kept the door closed anytime a constituent came inside
very upset about this situation,” she said
“One man was crying – not so much about the situation
but that his constitutional rights had been violated
She believes the staffers asked the library to call police so it wouldn’t look like the request was coming from Messmer’s office
And it was all for a group "that was mostly senior citizens."
Most of the videos from Bickle show constituents standing outside the original room and asking the Messmer staffers to meet with the entire group at once
and all of them wanted a public meeting instead of private conversations
a man and two women repeatedly ask the staffers – a woman and young man – to come out
“Nobody wants a one-on-one meeting out there,” the man says
“… We’ve got people here who are going to walk away if it’s not a public meeting."
a different man with gray hair and a flannel shirt addresses them
We’ve called Messmer’s office and we don’t get any answers,” he says in an even tone
“… Let’s go to a place where we can all talk
the exchanges are largely calm and never reach the point of screaming or arguing
as the staffers continue to evade a group discussion
“It’s about time you Republicans grew some damn balls,” she says
Another video shows Bolton – who had to be called in on her day off – addressing the attendees as they wait outside the hall
She reminds them the library has no say over where Messmer staffers meet and thanked the constituents for being respectful to library staff
She told the Courier & Press Messmer’s office reserved that specific small room
They were told how many people it could hold
The people at the library Tuesday aren’t the only ones struggling to get answers from Messmer
Earlier this month, he didn’t respond to multiple messages from the Courier & Press asking him his thoughts on potential Medicaid cuts that could affect thousands of people in his district. He dodged another interview in December
with a spokesman saying he would only take questions written in advance
During last year's election, he declined to debate his opponents and didn't have any public events in Evansville
He hasn’t announced plans to hold a town hall
Those have been hard to come by in the Evansville for years
Courier & Press archives show that Messmer’s predecessor
only had five of them in the city during his 14 years in office
And according to a report from Politico earlier this month
the head of the National Republican Congressional Committee has ordered GOP officials not to stage any town halls in the near future
some Evansville residents plan to have a “people’s town hall” instead
The “Messmer’s Missing” rally is scheduled for March 22 at 1 p.m
in front of the congressman’s local office at 20 NW Third St
organizer Wendy Bredhold said residents are encouraged to bring any written comments they have for the congressman
They’ll then be passed along to his office the following Monday
If Messmer agrees to hold an actual town hall
“Elected officials should be accessible to the people they serve
yet he refuses to face his constituents,” the release states
Bickle said she told Messmer’s staffers about the protest as the library event ended Tuesday
even though some constituents were still waiting to speak to them
“I feel like he’s forgotten he works for us,” she said

BOONVILLE — Darin Ward had the thought for a few years
How would a Friday night look away from a football sideline
Ward stepped down as the Boonville High School football coach on Monday
He went 59-46 in 10 seasons at his alma mater and won the Big Eight Conference title in 2018
His head coaching career nearly stretched two decades across Southern Indiana
More: Joey Paridaen named new Tecumseh High School football coach
The feeling of wanting a break resurfaced this offseason
"I just kind of knew it was time to step away," said Ward
"I think as coaches we're creatures of habit
I've kind of wanted to sit back on a Friday evening in September or early October at my house and not have to do anything
who graduated from Boonville in 1992 and played football at Indiana University
is staying on as a teacher and not taking a coaching position at a different school
The Pioneers went 6-6 last season and lost in the Class 4A sectional championship to Reitz
He has a 129-76 overall record with previous stops at Corydon Central and Charlestown
Ward won a regional with Corydon in 2011 and a sectional with Charlestown in 2014
His best season in Warrick County came in 2018 with 11 victories and an undefeated regular season
Boonville had just one losing campaign with Ward
It reached the sectional championship three times
"It was more about the atmosphere we had from day one," said Ward
"The support that I felt like our program was always given by our school
I always enjoyed the home football games — that feel of a small-town Friday night
we were always doing our best to put a good product on the field that our fans and community could be proud of."
This will be the fourth coaching position open in Southwestern Indiana, along with North, Princeton and South Spencer. Other schools who made hires this offseason were Jasper (Derek Hart) and Tecumseh (Joey Paridaen)
Ward thanked the administration for the support over the past 10 years
He also noted the positive bonds developed with staff members and players as the highlights
Ward doesn't know how many games he'll attend but will prioritize more time with his family
The Pioneers return four All-Pocket Athletic Conference selections including Northern Illinois commit Tyler Klaner
"I think I've been very loyal over the years," said Ward
"It's the relationships and brotherhood you develop as a staff
When your players from 10 years ago and (are now) grown into young men
It's how you develop young men and the relationships you have with them
