Despite staunch opposition from the community
it appears that the conversion of two Borough Park apartment buildings — 5001 Tenth Ave
— into homeless shelters will soon become a reality

calling the plan “a gross abuse of power and public funds.”

More "eyes" will be watching if you park by a fire hydrant or other no-parking area in Honesdale
the borough council approved working with a company that will be installing up to 100 curbside cameras aimed at license plates of possible violators
Councilor James Hamill expressed concerns that the public may view this as another intrusive surveillance system
Interim borough manager Kevin Kundratic countered that this is not the case
Kundratic said that the vote was for an agreement to partner with Municipal Parking Services (MPS), Inc., to install high-definition cameras which will be on posts approximately 36 inches high and powered by sunlight. Known as SafetySticks
the cameras are internet-based; data is uploaded to MPS
The camera is activated by radar when a vehicle has parked in front of it
Local enforcement personnel in Honesdale will determine whether a parking violation has occurred
a citation will be mailed by MPS to the vehicle owner
He said that this is done at no cost to the borough
A part of the fine generated by the citation goes to MPS

Hamill asked for further explanation before the vote was taken
anywhere we determine there it is going to create a hazard by anybody parking there
or if there is a parking violation." He said MPS will help the borough identify these spots
The borough can set up how much time a vehicle can be in the spot before a violation notice will be issued
"It takes a picture of the license plate and MPS will scrub the list of photos to make sure they there are actual violations," he said
The photos will be sent to the borough to review and decide if a citation is warranted
Hamill asked about the idea of putting 100 SafetySticks around the borough in a short time
we would incrementally increase those," Kundratic said
"Safety and security is… acknowledged by a private landowners' standpoint
and now we're in 2025 and we have cameras in the park
but this could potentially put up a hundred cameras all throughout town
creating a veritable network of surveillance throughout the town," Hamill stated
that MPS cameras will only look at license plates and are not meant as surveillance tool in the borough
Hamill questioned if the borough does not have personnel that could enforce the violations
"Maybe the public would have a different perspective; I think there would be some in the public feeling uneasy by having that many cameras potentially without any kind of reassurance of where that data goes," Hamill cautioned
He noted that when security cameras were installed in Central Park
the council enacted a policy of who would in the borough would be "the gatekeepers" of the data
saying he would be willing to vote yes if it was "well laid out."
The manager said that the idea is to take the burden off parking enforcement officers so they can concentrate on enforcing parking meters
He said that the fire department frequently complains about people parking in fire lanes
Mayor Derek Williams said he read the contract and found that it specifies that the borough will only use it for parking violations
Hamill said he understands it won't be a “constant surveillance”
but "we're shifting our responsibility away from folks in our employment who could
Kundratic noted that the borough has approximately 640 parking meters and only one part-time parking enforcement officer
with the goal to add a full-time officer as well to concentrate on parking meters
is the borough can enforce parking in other neighborhoods without meters where there are parking violations
"We don't have the resources in the police department or parking enforcement to handle those things," Kundratic said
Newbon added that MPS will allow enforcement "24/7."

NYC politicians decried antisemitism at the scene
A pro-Palestinian protest in the heavily Jewish New York City neighborhood of Borough Park descended into brawls and epithets Tuesday night as demonstrators clashed with pro-Israel counterprotesters
was charged with third-degree assault for punching someone in the face at the scene
None of the locations advertised on the website of the organizer of Tuesday’s event, the Getter Group, were located in the West Bank, though the company could inquire into property in the settlements on behalf of its clients, according to the Jerusalem Post
called on its followers to “flood Borough Park,” an allusion to Hamas’ name for its Oct
and to “show up in the masses to oppose the sale of stolen land
especially when it is happening in our own backyards!”
also called for “a complete end to the settler-colonial project of Israel and its goal of expansion.”
Borough Park is a heavily haredi Orthodox neighborhood, and politicians had warned of unrest ahead of the protest. Betar US, a right-wing pro-Israel group that urges its followers to “fight back” against anti-Israel protesters
“We cannot guarantee the safety of those who threaten Jewish synagogues,” it posted on social media following the event
At first the groups were separated into two areas. The pro-Palestinian protesters chanted, “Settlers settlers go back home, Palestine is ours alone,” as well as “Zionists go to hell,” according to the Times of Israel
The Jerusalem Post reported that Betar members called the pro-Palestinian activists “terrorists.”
Violent clashes broke out between the two sides

New York City politicians decried antisemitism at the incident

Republican City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov
an outspoken pro-Israel advocate who is Jewish and represents a Brooklyn district
called the pro-Palestinian protests “terrorists” and members of Hamas
and praised the pro-Israel counterprotesters
“Never since the pogroms of the past have we seen such blatant and open hatred towards Jews,” she tweeted
“These terrorists came to Boro Park for one reason only: to incite violence and fear in one of the largest Jewish communities in the United States
I am proud of the Jews and our allies who showed up and stood up to the HAMASNIKS.”
who is a vocal pro-Israel presence on social media
posted a video of a brawl and also said the anti-Israel protesters were Hamas supporters
“It should come as a shock to no one that the pro-Hamas mob targeting Jews and promising to ‘flood’ Boro Park has descended into violence,” he tweeted
“Violence is not a bug but a feature of the so-called ‘Free Palestine’ movement
which has no desire to free Palestinians from Hamas.”

Spineless institutions must fight back against criminals who target Jews
Seared into the minds of Jewish Americans are the innocent faces and bright red hair of the youngest Hamas hostages, Ariel and Kfir Bibas. The brothers, four and nine-months old, respectively, were kidnapped along with their mother
was also taken hostage but was released last week
Imagining Yarden’s anguish as he awaited news of his family’s fate only deepened the anxiety of millions who
“How many kids did you kill today?,” they chanted—with no sense of irony
This outrage—culminating in a brawl that police had to break up—reflects the growing normalization of masked rioters invading predominantly Jewish spaces to intimidate residents
The pro-Hamas mob pushed past police barricades and officers and approached nearby Jews
It’s time for American cities and institutions to stand up to this targeted misbehavior
Simply complaining about “hate” won’t solve the problem
New York and other cities need to show some spine
New York’s weak reforms have restricted the criminal-justice system’s ability to curb such bad behavior. In Manhattan, for instance, prosecutors dismissed twice as many disorderly conduct cases last year as they did the year before—and five times as many as the year before that
That’s thousands of instances of criminal conduct
using the same trappings and language of the Borough Park rioters
invading public spaces without consequences
It’s unclear how many of Wednesday’s protesters crossed the line from vile-but-protected speech to actual lawbreaking
But the lack of consequences for real infractions over the past year and a half—from blocking bridges to vandalizing businesses—has encouraged an atmosphere of barely contained menace.
The Jews have never been saved by appealing to the better nature of pitchfork-wielding Cossacks—and no society can thrive in the long run by enabling such behavior. The mindset that drives someone to shriek “Zionists go to hell” and start punching Jews in Borough Park is destructive to all
It is time for American institutions and policymakers to enforce public conduct laws rigorously
and unmask lawbreakers through constitutional anti-masking laws
The innocent faces of the Bibas brothers should remind us that it is the wicked who hide their faces to intimidate others
And criminals who target people for being Jewish must be stopped—with force

TrendingDevelopmentNew YorkADavid Tabak’s and Meyer Lebovits’ big Borough Park project nabs approvalsIs over-the-tracks development the future of NYC housing
Borough Park could be heralding the future of new development in New York City
Developers David Tabak and Meyer Lebovits have won approval to build a 14-building
270-unit development in the Brooklyn neighborhood
will be constructed on top of a freight rail line
David Tabak of Watermark Capital and Meyer Lebovits
secured the needed votes from the City Council’s zoning subcommittee with a slight height modification
That essentially ensures that the project will get a green light from the Land Use Committee and the full City Council
Tabak and Lebovits just have to land financing
Borough Park is not historically a place where developers have pushed the envelope on design or construction
an area home to a large Orthodox Jewish community filled with synagogues
The housing stock is nothing flashy — mostly small walkups
But Brooklyn Yards is among the city’s most ambitious projects
A freight train rumbles through once a day
The MTA plans to use the rail line as a route for the Interborough Express. The new transit project will run from Bay Ridge
Other developers are also looking at development possibilities near the line
But Tabak and Levovits would be the first to build over it
“Because the housing shortage is so severe
they are looking for non-traditional places to build and non-traditional ways to build,” said Ken Fisher of Cozen O’Connor
Tabak and Lebovits live in the neighborhood
They were walking around and noticed the rail line
SIGN UP“There is this kind of moat running through the middle of the neighborhood,” he said
They bought the sites for the project for $4.25 million in 2019
A previous developer had already secured the air rights above the tracks
came up with an unusual design for New York City
Most developers seek to build as densely as possible — maximizing units to appeal to lenders
the developers opted for classic Brooklyn row houses
Their project will be mostly four-story townhomes
along with a few six-story townhomes and a nine-story commercial building at the end
Brooklyn Yards received the support of two community boards and
Some neighbors called the project a threat to change the community
according to the local news site Boro Park24
The same site referred to the housing shortage in Borough Park as a “crisis,” mentioning that newlyweds were unable to find apartments
Related Companies built a deck over the MTA’s Hudson Yards for a megaproject and plans another one on the other half of the yards
as well as over Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn
Plans for decks to support housing over Sunnyside Yards in Queens and rail yards in the Bronx have been discussed
Decks over rail yards are hugely expensive and beyond the scope of all but the largest developers
Building over a rail line is more manageable — but still challenging
other over-the-tracks developments could follow
Valgora said a group that owns a site further down the rail line has hired his firm for a study
“It’s gone from a question whether this will be a precedent to it’s already proven to be,” the architect said
“This is absolutely the future of new housing in New York City.”
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir is expected to visit Jewish communities in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights and Boro Park neighborhoods on Thursday
chairman of the right-wing Otzma Yehudit (“Jewish Power”) party
will be hosted at private events where the audience is largely Hebrew-speaking
Organizers have asked that details of these events not be shared publicly
as Ben Gvir’s eight-day trip to the United States has drawn protests from anti-Israel and liberal interest groups
Reform Jewish leader Rick Jacobs published an op-ed in the left-leaning Haaretz titled: “U.S
Jews: Don’t Answer the Door When Ben-Gvir Comes Knocking.” Jacobs criticized Ben Gvir for what he called a “well-documented record of racism and incitement.” Jacobs himself met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in 2017
despite Abbas’s antisemitic remarks and documented Holocaust denial
several Orthodox shuls in New York declined to host Ben Gvir for an event
Among them were Park East Synagogue and two Safra synagogues
The minister had requested to use one of the shul halls for an event
the community has not objected to him attending existing events
Ben Gvir received a warm welcome in South Florida
A photo showed him addressing a group of American-Israelis at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach
the minister’s office stated that the purpose of the visit is to strengthen ties between Israel and the Jewish Diaspora and to learn from U.S
Ben Gvir and his delegation toured the Everglades Correctional Institution
where they met with Jewish inmates and observed rehabilitation programs
He later met with Rabbi Shalom Ber Lipskar
the delegation also visited an Israeli-owned supermarket in Hollywood
and a firearms store owned by an Israeli-Russian businessman
they discussed civilian firearm policies—a key issue for Ben Gvir in his role as Israel’s National Security Minister
Ben Gvir and his team also met with Rabbi Efrem Goldberg
The only public event in New York announced in advance is Ben Gvir’s attendance at a Siyum HaRambam ceremony at the main shul of 770 Eastern Parkway on Thursday at 9:45 PM
The event is independently organized and not affiliated with Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters
Ben Gvir is expected to travel to Boro Park
