Sign up now citizens voted to establish term limits for the mayor and city council of Bossier City The mayoral term limits proposition passed with 84% of the vote with the council term limits proposition passing with 83% of the vote these propositions will take the place of the term limit propositions that were passed in March Shall Section 3.01(b) of the City Charter for Bossier City be amended to read as follows: Members of the City Council shall be eligible for re-election No person who has been elected or appointed to serve as at-large and/or district Councilman/woman for three (3) terms shall be eligible to be appointed or elected to an additional term or portion thereof to which a person has been elected or appointed prior to January 1 will be counted toward the limitation provided for herein Shall Section 4.01 of the City Charter for Bossier City be amended to read as follows: (a) The Mayor shall be elected according to the laws of the state and serve a term of four (4) years The term of office shall begin on July 1 of the year in which he/she was elected (b) The Mayor shall be eligible for re-election No person who has been elected to serve as Mayor for three (3) terms shall be eligible to be appointed or elected to an additional term or portion thereof Past terms served do count toward the new term limits one of the founders of the Bossier Term Limits Coalition He says the group was going to fight to get term limits no matter what Crockett says they’re thankful to the people of Bossier City for caring about this issue The timeline of people advocating for Bossier City term limits dates back nearly two years The process began when the Bossier City Terms Limits Coalition began advocating for a three-term limit Term limits with retroactivity were on the ballot Saturday Bossier City voters overwhelmingly approved more stringent term limits it was a meager turnout with just 9.1% of voters casting a ballot Below are the election results for the two propositions The four Bossier City council members targeted by the Bossier Term Limits Coalition’s petition won’t be in office come July — but Saturday’s vote didn’t matter The coalition sought to unseat long-standing councilmembers Jeff Free Debra Ross soundly defeated long-time District 2 incumbent Jeff Darby to become the first Black woman City Councilmember and Williams declined to seek reelection.  there will be new council members in leadership Joining Ross will be Cliff Smith replacing Williams in District 3 Craton Cochran taking the seat of Montgomery as Councilmember At Large and Joel Girouard will be the District 4 councilor replacing Jeff Free.  The two measures on Saturday’s ballot will put term limits with retroactivity into effect for the Mayor’s office and the City Council but will have no immediate impact on any of the currently sitting leaders. Returning to the council will be Chris Smith and Brian Hammons — all having completed just one term in office Vince Maggio narrowly won his re-election for next term who said he would never support term limits then obfuscated the truth during his election lost 32% of his constituent’s support only winning by 38 votes Maggio’s votes for wasteful spending with entrenched politicians also damaged his reputation is now a damaged city-wide figure in Bossier City Many of us in Bossier City and Bossier Parish have long yearned for substantive reform—an end to the entrenched and pervasive cycle of political corruption that has cast a long the public has operated under a cloud of cynicism and resignation with little hope that meaningful change could take root The recent passage of these two propositions marks a pivotal victory for transparency Despite resistance from entrenched interests that have long benefited from the status quo the electorate made its voice unmistakably clear: corruption will no longer go unchallenged Although I personally would have preferred more stringent term limits—specifically a cap of two full terms—this represents a critical first step in a longer journey toward good governance our focus must now turn to the Bossier Parish Police Jury and—critically—the judiciary and District Attorney’s office of the 26th Judicial District Court The depth of alleged misconduct and opacity within these bodies is deeply troubling the situation is reportedly so fraught that even seasoned investigative journalists have expressed hesitation in probing too deeply we must continue to press forward—undaunted and unified in our commitment to restoring public trust Requesting the purportedly promised sidewalks on Brownlee Road that were reportedly part of the deal when Brownlee Road was incorporated or annexed in requesting crosswalk technology on all the major intersections on Airline A recently elderly church friend perished after attempting to cross Airline I decided to walk from Barksdale Air Force Base to my home shortly after his death and indeed discovered that the lack of crosswalk technology and accessibility made the trek difficult and dangerous oftentimes but many many of our less financially affluent Their lives are worth the extra expense and trouble I therefore respectfully and humbly make this first effort to bring attention to the need Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on close to each other they have separate water systems that got very different “grades.” The water system took the biggest hit for infrastructure deficiencies noted during inspections The report says these deficiencies could lead to unsafe drinking water and/or water service disruption Shreveport’s water system also got low marks for customer satisfaction and federal water quality The only positive on Shreveport’s report card was for having an asset management plan a storage assessment and maintenance program and for participating in management training or a capacity development program Shreveport Water Grade 2024 Bossier City’s water system received an A grade for 2024 The biggest deficiency noted in the report was for customer satisfaction Points were deducted for customer complaints received by the water system and/or LDH which are confirmed to be a water quality or quantity issue in the water system Bossier City Water Grade 2024 Click here for a full list of reports Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding a 9-year-old boy who was reported missing from Bossier City on Friday Jonathan Jones was last seen around 5:30 p.m on May 2nd leaving his home on East Texas Street He told family members he was going to visit a friend Jonathan is described as 4 feet 5 inches tall and weighing around 60 pounds He is believed to be riding a black and blue bicycle though it’s not known which direction he was headed The Louisiana State Police issued a Level II Endangered/Missing Child Advisory Saturday afternoon at the request of Bossier City officials Anyone who sees Jonathan or has information about where he may be is urged to call Bossier City Police at 318-741-8977 or dial 911 (The Center Square) — An ongoing effort to establish retroactive term limits in Bossier City receives the final vote by residents on Saturday an ordinance establishing term limits for the Bossier City Council members failed to pass despite citizen concerns The ordinance called for a special election in December proposing no person who has been elected or appointed to serve for three terms is eligible for reelection Residents presented a petition during a September City Council meeting with roughly 3,000 signatures the parish will vote on the retroactive term limits four council members will be ineligible for reelection — Jeff Free none of those will be serving as of July 1 A previous JMC analytics poll reported showed between 50%-70% of citizens in each district would approve City Council term limits The Bossier City Term Limits Coalition began the argument over retroactive term limits while the City Council’s previous proposed charter is prospective term limits The council originally wanted their prospective term limits to be on the December ballot last year the Louisiana Bond Commission rejected the proposal The reasoning behind the rejection was for the council’s omittance of the retroactive term limits supported and petitioned for by citizens The Center Square previously reported that if the charter passed in the March election it wouldn’t hinder the retroactive petition version from being added and voted on in future elections depending on how the courts ruled "If this goes forward as it is and it passes I think it could block any further action because the people of Bossier City will feel like they made their decision through their vote and that would mean that there would only be prospective term limits,” John Fleming state treasurer and commission chair said previously citizens will cast another vote for term limits as they did in March While the March election did not address retroactive term limits both propositions received a majority vote to pass some form of term limits for elected officials in Bossier "We think that we're going to be successful because we've made such a stink of this for the last two years," David Crockett told The Center Square previously "We think that some of these city councilmen are going to get beat and we may get control of the council with good people that are not doing this for self-serving purposes." - Crockett said Bossier City requires change citing a significant amount of wasteful spending through the years He said the Bossier City Term Limits Coalition believes that friends of council members have benefitted from their prolonged tenure in office "We had three city councilmen [who] had been in their position for over 20 years and it brings in new ideas to bring change in your local government." Crockett stated the Bossier City Term Limits Coalition did not believe that the March 29 term limits which allow a person to resume office after taking a break He said there's no reason for a person to run for more than three terms You can serve your community and then let other people come into the city council and bring in new ideas," Crockett said "If this one's not passed and Bossier citizens want real change — four of the city councilmen that are not elected for this next term It's important that this pass so we don't have the same group of people come back in Follow Ian Robinson on Twitter @_irobinson and on Facebook at https://bit.ly/3vln0w1 - Bossier Parish Schools is hosting an event for job seekers on Tuesday The 3rd Annual Job and Resource Fair is happening from 4 p.m Attendees will meet with school and department leaders to learn about the employment opportunities available Positions range from teaching and paraprofessional roles to maintenance Current employees are also encouraged to attend Following two “grid emergencies” in April which resulted in lost power to a swath of Bossier Parish utility authorities on Tuesday revealed the reason why our area is so vulnerable to outages SPP President and CEO Lanny Nickell said Bossier Parish needs added electrical transmission infrastructure “We know this area needs transmission — power lines,” Nickell said “That’s not always something customers wanna see We know they need more ability to import energy from outside the system into this area I expect there will be recommended projects that will help.”  SWEPCO President Brett Mattison said that’s why Bossier Parish suffered the highest number of outages from both grid emergencies in April.  BossierNow: Why did Bossier Parish take the brunt of the outages for both of those April occurrences?  Mattison: That’s where the voltage issue was the worst BossierNow: You can’t distribute it regionally?  Mattison: You have to go where that load — that voltage — is the biggest problem That’s where you have to go to do that.  we need more transmission sources in that area I would love to know how I’m supposed to replace the food I lost I’m disabled and live month to month and don’t get paid until May 28th it would have been nice to have some kind of a warning so I could have done something but I guess that would be to much to ask so thanks Swepco This is a problem that needs a fix before we lose all power I lost everything in my fridge mostly pet supplies like medicine that I can’t afford to replace or food to eat Just crackers and bottled water for me to eat I hate to bust your bubble but people in north Bossier lost power for 2 to 7 hours The reason I ask is they are building so many subdivisions that the road infrastructure won’t be able to handle it in the Haughton are Now the area needs new transmission lines Sounds like they need to throttle back on the building Sick of South Bossier being last on the list for anything good but first to knock off Our tax dollars are for improvement in our area For the last 30 south Bossier taxes have been spent in North Bossier We get a toll bridge while the North will get a free bridge build South Bossier new transmission lines and have North Bossier pay for them We do need to get it fixed so it does not keep happening We live in Doyline and not surprised are went out 3 times in week we’re always last one to get electricity back on just ridiculous!!
