Bradley Carnell knew how close the Union came to losing Saturday night at CF Montréal
a winless team so scarred that it looked afraid of its own shadow
instead of waiting to pass to teammates — the Union knew it was time to pounce
Jovan Lukić came a little too close to conceding a penalty kick in the 77th when he stuck his trailing leg toward Nathan Saliba
and Saliba took the contact as an invitation
Referee Marcos de Oliveira initially didn‘t call it

Three minutes and a few more fouls later (including one that prompted a brief sideline fracas)
Kai Wagner sent a free kick out of the Union‘s half
Lukić settled the ensuing game of pingpong
and then he split Montréal’s defense with a pass that set Uhre free
and his second beat Jonathan Sirois for his first goal since the season opener
but the drop-off from the Union‘s top three strikers to Donovan is still pretty big

“We knew Montréal have the ability to stretch you side-to-side and make you run and put in a shift
and we just thought that ‘Dono’ is a perfect candidate to empty the tank for the team in the first half,” he said
There are two ways to judge that: Did Donovan score
as Donovan had just one off-target attempt in his 55-minute shift
and there’s a lot of opportunities to be had,” Carnell said
“And it kind of seems as though that the front four are in a way now that if you look at whoever is striking
It was a perfect example of ‘Dono’ in there tonight.”
The bigger picture looks good, too. Uhre ended his goal drought a week after Bruno Damiani ended his own
and Tai Baribo remains tied for the league’s scoring lead with seven goals
Uhre has always been first to speak up when he isn‘t scoring
and one of the last to make it about himself when he fixes that

turned toward goal before Lukić played the pass he knew was coming
But make enough chances like this one and two things happen: The ball goes in eventually
They stand second in the Eastern Conference (7-3-1
thanks to their win and losses by Charlotte and Cincinnati
Danley Jean Jacques took control of a loose ball in his own end
short passes among teammates to move the ball up the field
» READ MORE: Danley Jean Jacques’ recent scoring streak for the Union showed that’s not just a bonus
The last of them went from Donovan to Jean Jacques
who then took off on a run halfway up the field
he laid the ball square for an onrushing Indiana Vassilev
who hit a first-time curler into the top corner for his first Union goal
and it left Montréal climbing uphill for the rest of the night
Apologies for the poor picture quality, but you'll get the idea:\n\nMikael Uhre looked back, knew Jovan Lukić was on his way to the loose ball, and turned to blow a hole in Montréal's defense before Lukić had sent the pass forward.\n\nTeach your youth players positioning like that.[image or embed]

ExpandBradley's 315 Sports Park will open this weekend as it hosts 50 boys' travel baseball teams at the new state-of-the-art complex. (Tiffany Blanchette)
BRADLEY – The first pitch at the 315 Sports Park flew across home plate at about 6 p.m. Friday.
While it was delivered by a youngster and was nothing more than the best fastball the hurler could muster, it was historic nonetheless – weather permitting, of course.
When the brand new baseball crossed home plate it ushered in a dramatically new era, specifically for Bradley, and generally for Kankakee County, in terms of youth sports and economic development.
The age-old, two-word expression commonly tossed about in baseball parks across the United States – Play ball! – has taken on a far greater meaning than anyone could have ever imagined.
In an effort to capitalize on the revenue stream of youth baseball, softball and soccer, Bradley, when all is said and done, will have invested some $47 million in constructing a youth sports complex unlike any other within Kankakee County or in any other complex in this entire region.
This weekend, 50 teams representing travel baseball teams both local and from afar converged at 315 Sports Park, the nearly 127-acre, 12-fully-turfed field complex immediately east of the Bradley Commons shopping center.
A site which only two years ago was a farm owned by Bourbonnais’ Jerry Alexander is now a new mecca for youth baseball, softball and soccer.
That description comes from John Pieritz, of Moline-based JP Sports and Entertainment, the company in charge of recruiting and hosting youth games at the site.
“The impact these parks have on a local community is unreal. What has been built in Bradley is unbelievable. Bradley did not hold back. Teams will be blown away,” Pieritz said.
While weekend No. 1 will attract 50 teams of 9 to 14 year olds. Weekend No. 2, from May 9-11, the slate will grow to 74.
There will be a constant uptick in teams as summer draws closer and as all 12 fields become ready for play. The first weekend will have six fields hosting games.
The 41-year-old Pieritz, who has an admitted love affair with all things baseball, said by the last weekend of June, there are 148 teams scheduled to converge on Bradley.
The weekend of the 50th annual Bourbonnais Friendship Festival, there could be as many as 8,000 players, coaches, umpires, family, friends and casual spectators headed to Bradley to watch baseball.
Pieritz estimated some 2,000 families could be on hand the last weekend of June.
“That’s the impact these facilities can have. When these are done right, they can be very successful and Bradley has done it right,” he said.
It will be up to team JP Sports to turn Bradley’s creation into a local economic engine.
While Bradley leadership will keep its eyes focused on the park’s operation, it will be up to JP Sports to manage the bats and balls.
In its simplest form, Bradley built and owns the site; JP Sports will bring in the teams and the umpires. They will be in charge of all things baseball and softball, including supplying the actual baseballs and softballs.
Bradley makes its money through the rental of the playing fields.
Bradley finance director Rob Romo said the weekend’s play will bring the village $10,000 in rental fees. Through this first season, he is estimating the village will pull in $300,000.
Income will grow in subsequent years, the thought is, as word spreads and as more teams seek to play here.
“We will do our best to make this place a success,” Pieritz said.
He said success is not guaranteed, of course, but Bradley has put everything in place to make it a success.
“The people of Bradley get it. This is a first-class facility,” he said.
Pieritz and his crew manage complexes across the Midwest. Bradley is just part of their portfolio.
“We take this very seriously,” he said of the company founded in 2010. “We have to put on a good event. We do it the right way. We’ve built a reputation and people trust us.”
It was only two summers ago, these acres were growing corn and soybeans.
The farm was owned by Alexander. Bradley Mayor Mike Watson had an idea. He approached Alexander about the availability of the land.
The 126.3-acre plot was purchased in April 2023 by Bradley for $2,550,250, or $20,192 an acre.
Watson never looked back. Alexander may have.
“I think I sold it too cheap,” he said with a chuckle earlier this week.
Alexander has visited the site throughout the construction process. Each visit he said he leaves more impressed.
With development only started about 13 months ago, the speed and development have left Alexander nearly speechless.
“Watson has so much foresight,” Alexander said. “He’s done so much for Bradley.”
But will it be successful? Alexander said he has no idea. This type of development is out of his field of expertise.
“I do know this: This property is totally transformed. I believe this will be great for everyone. I’m just amazed,” he said of the location he had owned for some eight years.
He said the property was initially targeted to be a housing subdivision. When the housing market tanked in 2008, so did that plan.
He eventually acquired it and had it farmed. He simply bided his time.
Watson said the past 18 months have been filled with more decisions than any baseball manager could possibly juggle. He said there will most certainly be an error or two made along the way, but even Gold Glove shortstops botch a grounder every now and then.
He said this first year will come with many learning opportunities.
The mayor could be more relieved to see fields ready for game action.
“Let me say this: I’m happy to get this off our plate,” Watson said of construction. “There will be issues. I know that. We will learn much this first year.”
One thing learned was the cost of construction headed north in a significant way. He had initially targeted a $30 million price tag.
Well known for his number-crunching skills, Watson missed the mark by a whopping 50%.
Prices crept up. So did development ideas. He said the idea was to build the complex correctly the first time.
The site features walking paths, a full-service restaurant, two other food preparation sites at opposite ends of the property, two ponds and a children’s playground, among other features.
He is confident this will be the premier youth sports complex in the upper Midwest.
“It’s class,” Watson said. “We set out to be the premier site. I want this to be the destination of choice.”

Football writer Adrian Clarke compares Conor Bradley with the player he could replace as Liverpool's first-choice right-back
Trent Alexander-Arnold's announcement that he will leave Liverpool this summer has reopened the question as to whether the club have a ready-made replacement in Conor Bradley
Bradley did replace Alexander-Arnold for the final half-hour of Sunday's 3-1 defeat at Chelsea
Liverpool's first match since being confirmed as Premier League champions
but whether he can do it every week from next season is up for consideration here
The outstanding quality shown by Alexander-Arnold since emerging from the Liverpool Academy to make his debut in 2016 marks him down as one of the best
it feels a little unfair on 21-year-old Bradley to draw firm parallels
As far as this season has been concerned though
the Northern Irishman has shown a little more attacking dynamism than his vastly experienced team-mate
Bradley has displayed plenty of ambition and attacking zest
and is perhaps more comfortable at running with the ball at his feet
That drive has taken Bradley into the opposition penalty area with far greater frequency than Alexander-Arnold
averaging six touches in that domain per 90 minutes
This is way in advance of the England international
A prime example of what Bradley brings to the side was seen when he produced his first assist of the campaign for Luis Diaz away to Fulham
to demand a pass that freed him up in space down the centre of the pitch
carrying the ball to the edge of the box before slipping Diaz in for a shot on goal
It was a quality piece of play that marks him out as being different in style to Alexander-Arnold
a player who tends to hurt rival teams more with his brilliant passing
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has been less inclined than predecessor Jurgen Klopp to ask Alexander-Arnold to take up central midfield positions
But it is the younger man who powers on up the pitch with a lot more regularity
when you analyse the Englishman’s heat map and compare it with Bradley’s below
Trent is more inclined to drift further infield
and he does more defensive work inside his own box than Bradley
When it comes to whipping dangerous crosses into the box
opening up the opposition with an incisive pass
or switching the point of attack with a raking long ball
there is no one to compare with Alexander-Arnold
he is arguably the world’s best right-back
His creative numbers compared to those of Bradley
who has played around a quarter of the minutes this season
when Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool this summer
there is no real possibility that Bradley can step in and replicate exactly the same output from right-back
A change of style and expectancy would be required from Liverpool’s right-back in 2025/26
This shot and assist graphic signifies what the Reds would be losing in Alexander-Arnold:
Alexander-Arnold’s defending has often been unfairly criticised
and he has undoubtedly made good strides in that aspect of his play
Yet the raw statistics do still tell us that when it comes to duels
it is Bradley who offers a touch more reliability and strength
The Northern Ireland international wins a greater number of 50-50s
and is especially good at pressurising opponents when they have the ball at their feet
He will close players down with a lot of enthusiasm
In 1v1s it is also the less experienced player who proves tougher to beat with a dribble
Alexander-Arnold's many outstanding contributions as a super-creative full-back will live long in the memory of Liverpool’s supporters
Given he has helped the club to win eight trophies
including this season's Premier League title
he should be remembered as an Anfield legend
his place in Liverpool’s folklore is assured
Yet the 21-year-old does still have plenty to offer
even if it means Slot’s Liverpool will have to compensate in other areas of the pitch for Alexander-Arnold's now-confirmed departure
Michael Owen and Steve Cooper discuss the top-five race and who they think will be in the competition next season

I had it planted by someone who knew what he was doing
It was his suggestion that the tree be planted outside one of the windows where it would eventually provide some relief from the western sun that
turns the living room into a reasonable facsimile of a sauna
My professional picked a spot between the chimney and the bay window in the kitchen – a little nook
He dug the hole according to the guidelines known by every subscriber to Southern Living (“three times wider than the root ball
He then patted the soil gently and gave the tree its first bath
I have failed at a number of horticultural efforts over the years – the camellia
and multiple hydrangeas – but something about the crepe myrtle made me optimistic
And the chances that I would forget to water something that I saw every time I passed the window were pretty low
The crepe myrtle survived the summer heat and almost total neglect as I directed all my attention to the sudden illness that would take my father 37 days after diagnosis
Withstanding a near-drowning from Tropical Storm Debbie and Hurricane Helene
dropping with a languid sigh the one leaf it had managed to produce
It trembled in the cold stiff winds of winter and bore up under four inches of unexpected snow
When green finally begin its creep across the landscape
I kept waiting for the little crepe myrtle to
at least gasp its way into producing some evidence of life
Day after day I stared through the window at a bare tree
Had I really expected this latest attempt at gardening to result in spectacular success
I rolled my eyes and muttered under my breath something about wasted money and “never again” and I let it go
I noticed the way the late afternoon light was falling in soft puddles on the wood floor and stopped to watch it shimmer like the surface of a pond beneath a gentle wind
I took a deep breath and turned to look at what I knew would be a subtle
And that is when I saw it – the crepe myrtle covered in fat buds and bright green leaves bouncing in the breeze
I stood there with my hands on my hips frustrated with
Not the first time I had feigned disinterest or claimed detachment when I stood on the edge of letdown
I had lived enough moments just like that one to know that if I chose to stand there long enough
stare into shimmering light at the horizon for a few more seconds
I would experience the magic that is believing

I had the best time celebrating and it's a blessing to feel so loved!
Since dating rumors sparked in October 2023
have mostly kept their relationship under wraps
They were first seen leaving the NYC hotspot Via Carota together and just days later
they rolled back into town from a brief getaway looking loved-up
A source spilled to People on October 9
that this dynamic duo was simply "having fun." The insider also revealed that the Victoria's Secret beauty has had "sort of a crush on [Cooper] for a while."
"She's independent, busy and her days are filled with responsibilities so I don't see anything serious happening right away if at all," the source shared. "[They have] things in common so it's possible to see it progress. It appears super casual now but they both have kids, big careers, busy lives and understand what life is like in these circles. It's cute... and there is an attraction."
Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid were spotted at Taylor Swift’s Paris concert
The lovebirds continued to be spotted together frequently and by November 2023, Life & Style reported that Hadid and Cooper had "been secretly hooking up for weeks now."
"Friends thought they should get together and they totally hit it off
It was an instant attraction," the insider dished
often meeting up late and spending the night together
they're both super busy but they really go out of their way to make time to see each other."
Fast forward to May 2024 and Hadid and Cooper were seen enjoying a romantic date night at none other than Taylor Swift's concert in Paris
In a March interview with Vogue
Hadid couldn't help but gush about their relationship
"I think just getting to the point where knowing what you want and deserve in a relationship is essential
And then to find someone that is in a place in their life where they know what they want and deserve… and you both do work separately to come together and be the best partner that you can be
Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid each have one child from prior relationships
Sources also allege that the couple want to take things up a notch
“"[They] are there for each other in such a way that spending the rest of their lives together seems to be the next phase for them both,” the insider shared

Bradley Cooper was the one behind planning Gigi Hadid’s special 30th birthday party
Bradley and Gigi are similar in their lowkey personas and that helped the Maestro star plan the party which was held in New York City
“Bradley and Gigi have the same low-key vibe,” a source told Us Weekly
“He went all out to make her feel loved on her birthday and planned everything himself.”
Bradley picked L’Avenue at Saks in Midtown Manhattan for his girlfriend’s milestone birthday on April 25
He invited all her loved ones and the attendees included her parents Mohamed Hadid and Yolanda Hadid
but it was incredibly thoughtful and personal,” the insider added
“He knows Gigi doesn’t like over-the-top attention
so it was a very curated evening with her closest friends.”
Gigi later took to social media to share photos from the fun evening
she also made her romance with the actor Instagram official with a photo of them kissing
I feel so lucky for every high and low — for all the lessons and gifts both have brought me,” she gushed in the caption
colleague to some of the most unbelievable humans!!”
“So lucky for the support and encouragement from all of YOU around the world
I am grateful and honored to take on a new decade x x G.”

Above: Electrical and computer engineering senior Thomas Lu juggles two light-up LED poi balls
Majors: Electrical and computer engineering
Plans after graduation: Lu committed to the biomedical engineering Ph.D
which was recently named the number one biomedical engineering program in the nation by U.S
Favorite Virginia Tech memory: Among Lu’s many good memories
“I’ve grown a lot as an engineer and researcher,” he said
“but Virginia Tech has also allowed me to grow as a person and in my faith
Whether he’s flawlessly balancing his two majors and three minors with his research work at the Vlaisavljevich Research Lab
or participating in the actual juggling club he founded
Add in his 4.0 grade point average, the 2024 Barry Goldwater Scholarship, and the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
and it’s no surprise that he was named the Outstanding Senior for the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)
Banners and bumper stickers adorned the homes and cars in his hometown in Northern Virginia
His enthusiasm for engineering came directly from his parents
who worked in semiconductors and software engineering at Texas Instruments
“Virginia Tech was my first choice; it’s a great environment
“but what really got me was the people I met from the university
and hearing how they talked about Virginia Tech
It’s something that spoke to me and I wanted to be a part of it.”
Since his first year at Virginia Tech, Lu has worked with the Vlaisavljevich Research Lab to further ultrasound research for non-invasive therapies, including histotripsy, an image-guided tumor ablation method pioneered by Eli Vlaisavljevich and his University of Michigan colleagues
Lu first got connected to the lab during Explore Engineering week, an opening week experience hosted by the College of Engineering
“I still remember Connor Edsall and Jess Gannon – Vlaisavljevich’s graduate students who both have become great mentors to me – standing by a water tank,” Lu said
“They fired up the transducer and you just started to hear this buzzing sound
He emailed Vlaisavljevich, who invited Lu to join the lab as an undergraduate researcher. Lu has been so influenced by his time at the lab, he even proposed and executed a major design experience project for ECE
“Development of a novel multifrequency focused ultrasound system for the non-invasive
versatile treatment of tumors.” This senior capstone initative
expands on the current single frequency use of ultrasound by using high-voltage drivers to create multifrequency histotripsy
Lu’s connection to biomedical engineering is rooted in his brother’s DNA
Gordon, Lu’s older brother, was born with 22q11.2 deletion, also known as DiGeorge Syndrome
a condition that occurs when a small part of chromosome 22 is missing
This missing segment includes an estimated 30 to 40 genes that cause several body systems to develop poorly
Thomas saw how his family was deeply affected by the syndrome
as his brother endured multiple hospital visits and generalized tonic-clonic seizures
It was during one of these particularly difficult seizures that Lu realized his calling: to help people like his brother
“I’m interested in advancing minimally and non-invasive treatments for people with nervous system disorders,” Lu said
“I believe I’m called to help people with the resources that I’ve been given
Engineering is all about identifying problems
solving problems with the technology and science that we have.”

Blalock solid in unexpected return to MajorsMay 4th
SAN FRANCISCO -- Other than the two walks he issued leading off the pivotal sixth inning against the Giants on Saturday, Rockies pitcher Bradley Blalock did just about everything that manager Bud Black had hoped for
Called up to fill in for injured starter Ryan Feltner after the right-hander was placed on the injured list
Blalock pitched five solid and effective innings against the Giants
putting him in position to get the win had the Rockies' offense against San Francisco starter Jordan Hicks and four relievers been enough
“He threw the ball well,” Black said of Blalock following the Rockies’ 6-3 loss
Four pitches well-thrown today by Bradley.”
Blalock looked like an experienced veteran on the mound
He retired the first seven hitters he faced with ease
then made one of his few mistakes during the afternoon when he left a 1-0 hanging slider over the plate that Giants designated hitter Luis Matos crushed for a 392-foot home run
The 24-year-old Blalock composed himself and set down seven of the next eight batters
When he walked two of the first three Giants hitters in the sixth
“I left the slider up to Matos,” Blalock said
Blalock struck out four and allowed the Matos homer and a fourth-inning single to Willy Adames
The Giants' only other runners against Blalock came on the two walks in the sixth
Blalock’s second start this season capped an odd week for the right-hander
After opening the season in Colorado’s bullpen
Blalock got roughed up in a start against the Cincinnati Reds on April 27 and was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque afterward
He was preparing himself to start in the Minors on Friday when the big league club called him back up to face the Giants
“I didn’t think [getting back to the Majors] was going to come this fast,” Blalock said
worked on a few things there in a mid-week bullpen and I felt good coming in.”
Blalock worked on fundamentals and his form
Part of that was focusing on strengthening his back leg in order to get better command of his pitches
That’s an encouraging sign for the Rockies
whose starting pitching had mixed success over the first 32 games
Blalock had only logged seven innings in the Major Leagues this season
Although it’s still relatively early in the season
the Rockies have had to lean very heavily on their bullpen due to the struggles of the starting five
Having a fresh arm like Blalock’s could ease some of that overuse
Blalock is almost certain to get at least one more start with the big league club

If not, he knows what the mandate will be when he goes back to the Minors. It’s the same message that club officials told him when he was optioned back to Albuquerque.
“Just go down there and be ready for anything,” Blalock said.

SaveSave this storySaveYou can drive 90 minutes from New York City and feel as though you’ve never left
And then you can drive 90 minutes from Manhattan and feel like you’re in a different country: dense woods
warnings tacked to telephone poles cautioning deer hunters against trespassing
There might be a few gourmet markets and inns with minimalist
but on the January day I visit Gigi Hadid in rural Pennsylvania
the only notable landmark I see anywhere near her home is a humble gas station
“Welcome!” Hadid shouts from the doorstop of a long
low house nestled into the surrounding hills
but made with reclaimed materials and wide windows that frame the landscape
The spaces inside are clean but scattered with the clutter of parenting and life in general: unopened cardboard boxes
and makeup-free—is dressed in black Nike sweatpants and a pullover from her cashmere knitwear line
A blanket of snow covers the ground and icicles hang from the eaves
but inside the fire is blazing and it seems like every room has a candle lit
She has been in the area for about eight years
ever since she bought a converted lavender farm with her mother
I ask her why she moved out here in the first place—entry-grade small talk
but Hadid answers candidly: “It just kind of got to a point in my career where there started to be cameras outside every day in New York
And she is direct about the toll: “It got to a place where I would have three days off
And that’s very intense.” When I speak by phone to John
her head of security for almost a decade (who prefers we only give his first name)
he describes a particularly grueling set of days some years back
Her plan had been just to hide in her apartment to recover—but that wouldn’t do
and he figured out a way to get her to the beach with a friend
“The two girls were just in the ocean all day
and we drove back to the city later that evening,” John recalls
“I think things like that were able to reenergize her
to allow her to feel—I really hate to use the word normal
but sometimes her world is a little off-center
even when I was just trying to put on something casual and go get coffee or go to the pharmacy
someone had a comment: Why is she dressed like that
She is also blunt about the attention paid to her body: She’s too heavy or She has an eating disorder were the kinds of things she regularly heard
“I’ve been called every name in the book,” she says
“And so I phoned my mom one day and I was like
I need somewhere to go.’ ” We have been together for no more than 20 minutes
The experience she is describing may have occurred years ago
“I learned the hard way,” Hadid says of the access she offered people early in her career
“There were times in the beginning where I gave too much.”
(“I didn’t even really know those women,” she says now
“you can hit really hard or you can tip”—a softer
“And Gigi told me one time—I’ll never forget—‘I’m not tipping
whom she met in the elevator of the IMG offices on her way into their meeting
let’s talk about our goals for the next five years,’ ” says Mattos
who has represented Hadid for more than a decade
and the fact that they celebrated that in editorials and on the runway,” Versace says
whom she first met in San Francisco on a tour bus in 2013
Weiner and her boyfriend at the time were hanging out
“being very rambunctious—very Almost Famous,” Weiner says
(“The epitome of a California rock-and-roll artist girlfriend,” is how Hadid describes her first impression of Weiner.) “And I think I kind of immediately became this safe space in this very new environment for her,” Weiner says
Weiner had the idea to splatter an 18-year-old Gigi with acrylic paint and shoot her for a series she called Cover, Girl
“We put her in my little Chinatown apartment shower
She’ll always say it’s the worst she’s ever been treated on a shoot,” Weiner jokes
and it was an honor to be in front of anyone’s camera,” counters Hadid
“let alone my friend and someone whose art I really loved.” The work
but it also was the beginning of our relationship being centered around art.” Their friendship has since been girded by creative projects
And then there’s the creative care Hadid applies to her personal life
she tells me that she and Khai have recently been picking colors to dress in—head to toe
In her bathroom there are plastic tubs filled with toys—for their “shower parties.” A nook under a staircase has been converted into a jungle-themed play space
“I could see Khai was interested in it,” Hadid says of the neglected crawl space
‘I’m going to go to Target and pimp this out.’ ”
and their relationship was followed with rabid interest—particularly toward its conclusion (the details of which you can look up
though it’s clear from talking to Hadid that they are very much in the past)
Hadid flicks through the photos on her phone
showing me scenes of Malik holding Khai on the first day of pre-K
and describing the innate musicality Khai gets from her father
“Zayn and I do our custody schedules months in advance,” Hadid says
planning everything around the weeks they have Khai
“That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t change here and there
but we help each other out and have each other’s backs.” She and Malik have entered this new phase of their partnership with “love
accepting—more or less—that their relationship will likely forever be under some kind of microscope
“There is the hard part of the world knowing this much
and thinking they know everything,” says Hadid
we’re not interested in giving everyone our whole story
What we are interested in is raising our daughter together
She hands me a heavy Carhartt coat to wear outside (my jacket is in the car)
Khai likes to talk to him.” Nestled between giant stacks of firewood
dreamed up by Hadid; a playhouse that she and Khai painted with pink and white stripes sits next to a climbing gym
I see a small stream; in the summer they will scoop clay for pottery from its banks
Being a mother “has only made her more of herself,” says Weiner
“Gigi doesn’t want to be in a club in the city on a Tuesday night.” Hadid tours me through the craft room
where pom-poms and ice-pop sticks and googly eyes are arranged in glass canisters like gumballs at a candy store
Khai is able to paint on one of the walls in the room; it seems to have had the effect of preventing a mess elsewhere
though this is a house where it feels like a mess might sometimes be encouraged
“It’s a beautiful thing she’s done—created a space out here where she can give Khai the most normal experience possible,” says Adrienne Tosti
stay-at-home-mom friend,” and Hadid describes
Tosti moved to Pennsylvania with her husband when she was pregnant
and met Hadid at a local mommy-and-me class: “My daughter was in an Elsa nightgown princess dress,” says Tosti
“and Khai was also in something Elsa related
and they looked at each other and were like
we’re on the same page.” She and Hadid spend a large portion of their parenting hours together
taking their daughters into the city to visit the Natural History Museum
so what are we going to do Monday?” says Tosti
Hadid describes hers as a kind of double life
a way she has of inhabiting distinct identities from day to day
“I joke with my mom friends that I feel like the Hannah Montana of fashion,” she says
And I don’t think that seeing me walk into random places around here,” she gestures at the landscape
As much as motherhood has given Hadid a life away from modeling
it has also helped her chart a path through fame
Because she splits her time between Pennsylvania and New York
it’s no longer really worth the paparazzi’s time to camp out at her Manhattan apartment
she has developed a remarkable degree of equanimity about her own exposure—“This is part of the job; when you’re a public figure
When it comes to Khai, though, she is firm. After her daughter was born, Hadid wrote an open letter to the paparazzi—a moderate plea that requested they obscure Khai’s face
“We didn’t grow up walking out of our house thinking
What angle could someone be watching me from?” Hadid says
“And that’s not something I want to be part of her train of thought.” The letter did not
If she notices a photographer while they are in the park
and makes a game of it: Let’s see how quickly we can get home
life has to load.… It’s different from how socials felt when I was younger
It doesn’t come as naturally to me as it did when Instagram started.”
Hadid credits therapy and just getting older with helping her balance the people-pleasing
hard-working parts of her personality with the desire to “have respect for myself.” She now finds it easier to say no
and even finds power in asserting the reason: “I have no regrets
I have Khai that week.’ That’s just the boundary I’ve set.” Again
Hadid comes to the brink of tears as she describes the life she has built for her daughter in this quiet enclave—the secret jungles and painted playhouses
“Khai is protected by our friendships here
Hadid drives me to a deli to pick up sandwiches for lunch
speeding along the icy roads with confidence
chatting about the inauguration (she watched—and thinks it’s important not to stick your head in the sand
and has even gone so far as to investigate adult volleyball leagues in the area)
and the Broadway shows she’s attended lately (“Sweeney Todd—incredible—for two weeks
I was marching around the streets of New York to ‘The Ballad of Sweeney Todd’ ”)
Wicked—which she has seen 10 times—is her favorite musical
A humble suggestion for Jon Chu: Cast her in one of the sequels
“I don’t just want to go act in TV and movies as
What she does tell me about this relationship makes it seem like it might not have taken place at an earlier stage in her life. “I think just getting to the point where knowing what you want and deserve in a relationship is essential,” she says, “and then to find someone that is in a place in their life where they know what they want and deserve…and you both do work separately to come together and be the best partner that you can be. I just feel really lucky. Yeah, lucky’s the word.
“I respect him so much as a creative,” she continues, “and I feel that he gives so much to me: encouragement and, just, belief. For those people you admire to encourage you, it can create so much belief in yourself. Like, what’s the worst thing if I auditioned for this? You jump and take the leap.”
The next day, eight flights up, in a bright, whitewashed studio on the West Side of Manhattan, Gigi Hadid is not quite leaping, but radiating some of the energy of the musical theater kid she once was, performing for the camera. “I have always been impressed by Gigi,” says Miuccia Prada, another one of her early champions
“She is incredibly professional and charming at the same time
She holds a special place not only in the world of fashion and has done so for a long time
It is the result of the hard work and the commitment she puts into all she does.”
Hadid is shooting the spring-summer looks for Guest in Residence; the new collection will launch just 10 days later
The studio is littered with props: water guns
New Balance sneakers with the laces untied
The theme of the shoot is “postcard from nowhere,” or
shellac it into a Mary Tyler Moore–style flipped-up bob
“I’m thinking about the cupcakes,” Hadid belts out more than once while the shutter snaps
“Does everyone know that I brought cupcakes?”
from the summer intern turned marketing coordinator to the e-commerce manager
Apart from the core people involved in the shoot—Rossella Raffi
the chief marketing officer; Hadid’s business partner Isaac Ross; the art director Paolo Santosuosso—it doesn’t feel like the staff needs to be there
but they settle comfortably along the sidelines nonetheless
says Guest in Residence design director Sijeo Kim
Let’s talk about the idea.” Kim describes meeting Hadid for the first time at her apartment; she was carefully dressed in supporting-staff black
while Gigi was in a leather jacket with a power shoulder—both of them now aware that they were trying out roles
Hadid sits down next to us as Kim tells the story; it’s lunchtime and a plate of Middle Eastern food is balanced on her knees
“A power shoulder—very unlike me!” she exclaims
Kim’s voice was shaking during that first meeting as she showed Hadid samples of her earlier design work
my voice shakes all the time too.’ ” Their relationship
like many of the initially professional relationships Hadid enters
where they send inspiration back and forth—everything from Korean architecture to a T-shirt that has been a stalwart of Hadid’s closet
Raffi, who traveled extensively with Hadid while they were promoting a collection she did with Tommy Hilfiger at the start of her career
where they were besieged by crowds of fans
including a giant Gigi doll that followed them around the city
Hadid managed to organize a birthday dinner for Raffi
and she cherishes the team around her,” says Raffi
And it’s also very rare.” When the Guest in Residence staff has to stay late at their office
interfering with the cleaning crew’s schedule
that she can’t build a company purely through cupcakes and birthday dinners: “Sometimes I have to say the thing that’s hard to say and be the boss,” Hadid tells me
you wouldn’t see a full depiction of me,” says Hadid
Hadid quickly changes into cashmere Guest in Residence sweats
“My wardrobe is really the basics that I’ve been reworking.” This was part of the motivation for Guest in Residence
She wanted to sell things that will last and have less of an impact on the earth than most fashion
(She can geek out on cashmere quality and supply chains and how they are reseeding the fields where the cashmere goats graze.) She is both leader and student when it comes to Guest in Residence: One of her favorite things to do
is to stop by the store and investigate how people are approaching the clothes
“It really opened my mind—not just about theme parks and rides
but some of my first memories of really looking around.” Working with Karl Lagerfeld
brought this back: “Walking onto those Chanel sets—I felt like a kid in an amusement park
It rang those same bells in my brain.” When she texts later
Her work on Guest in Residence is striving to re-create this: “Our conversation made me think of how putting myself in creative situations makes me feel like a kid again,” she writes
Hadid will turn 30—certainly no longer a kid—and I ask her if she feels like a new chapter is beginning
(And for those who will be watching the slow roll of her social media feed: Yes
and she is thinking that she wants it to be formal
“something a little bit camp.”) “I’m excited for 30,” she says
“I feel like a lot of the stuff in my career
that people maybe normally go through in their 30s
I went through in my 20s.” Her goal for the upcoming year is to do more of the things that scare her
that maybe make her hands shake just a bit
I have to remember that if I feel scared or intimidated
I ask if it ever felt like things were moving a bit too fast for her—in her career
“For a lot of moms there’s this perfect image of what they’re supposed to be and how it needs to go,” she says
You wake up and do your best and you realize it is enough
and there’s a beauty in not necessarily knowing exactly how that’s going to go.” She pauses a moment
as though aware that this same sentiment could be applied to various inflection points in her career
“I think that’s a huge lesson that I needed
And probably one of the reasons that Khai came to me
You can look at an experience as the right or wrong time for anything
Now I just give myself the grace and look at how many things I’ve handled

After pitching the first perfect game in program history and striking out 11 on April 16 in Pen Argyl’s 5-0 win over the Crusaders
Bradley held Notre Dame to six hits and one earned run as she struck out six on Friday afternoon in the teams’ second meeting of the season
Bradley forced a lineout and a flyout with the potential tying runner on third base in the seventh inning to secure the Green Knights’ 3-2 road victory over the Crusaders
And they have a good eye for the ball,” Bradley said of Notre Dame
“I knew that I just had to mix up my spots
I knew that they’ve already seen me three times through the lineup
I knew that I had to move my pitches around a little bit
It was basically a lot of spin and changing speeds.”
The Pen Argyl senior pitcher recorded 1-2-3 innings in the first
Bradley sandwiched a popout in between a pair of strikeouts in the fourth inning
Notre Dame scored in the fifth inning after a pair of walks and an error
Bradley recorded her fifth strikeout of the game to end the frame and strand runners on first and second base
The Crusaders got back-to-back singles from senior third baseman Claire Ceraul and sophomore right fielder Rachel Fisher with two outs in the sixth inning
But Bradley closed the frame by making a diving stop in the pitching circle and throwing to freshman first baseman Talia Curtolo to record the final out of the frame
Senior shortstop Hannah Lilly had a one-out single and then advanced to third base on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning
Bradley got out of the jam and finished the game by forcing a lineout to Curtolo at first base and then a flyout to junior right fielder Ashlyn Oessenick
“I feel like it just comes from experience,” Bradley said of dealing with the final-inning pressure
“Definitely just making sure that I keep my mind focused on the batter because
I kind of just have tunnel vision on the batter because if I can get her out
It was another strong performance for Bradley against a tough Notre Dame lineup
which scored 28 and 26 runs in games early in the season and produced nine runs in a victory over defending District 11 Class 6A champion Liberty on April 17
“I’m just confident with her,” Pen Argyl coach Bill Schankel said of Bradley
every game out she’s going to give me 100 percent and she’s going to give us a good game
You can’t ask for anything more than that from your pitcher.”
Following a leadoff single by senior center fielder Madacyn Rivera and then a Notre Dame error
Pen Argyl took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double into left field by Bradley
Freshman catcher Abigail Scherer connected on a sacrifice fly in the first inning to increase the Green Knights’ lead to two runs
Notre Dame cut the deficit to 2-1 with an RBI double by Ceraul in the second inning
Pen Argyl extended the advantage to 3-1 in the fourth inning
Oessenick led off the frame with a single and then sophomore left fielder Ella Garcias hit a double into left field
Freshman third baseman Angelina Beltran followed with an RBI groundout for the Green Knights
Bradley went 2-for-2 with an RBI double and a pair of walks for Pen Argyl
which improved to 13-5 overall this season
Rivera added a pair of hits for the Green Knights
who are scheduled to end the regular season on Tuesday with a game at rival Bangor
The Green Knights are hoping to host a Colonial League quarterfinal on Friday
“It was a great win,” Rivera said of the victory over Notre Dame
It really gives us a test to see how good we actually are.”
Ceraul went 2-for-3 with an RBI double for the Crusaders
which will close the regular season on Monday night at Wilson
who is in his 36th year of coaching Pen Argyl
broke his arm as he threw batting practice before the Green Knights game against Stroudsburg on April 19
The 79-year-old Schankel has shown off his toughness
not missing a game or practice with the injury and ensuing surgery
of course,” Schankel said about coaching the game against Stroudsburg immediately after getting injured
Bradley missed much of last season due to an ankle injury and then surgery to remove scar tissue in the area
The senior was cleared to play just before this year
especially since I was really nervous coming back from a surgery because I was released a month and a half before the season started,” Bradley said
“I definitely think my speed is back the way it was sophomore year
A big part of it is I just love my team and I know they have my back all the time
Obviously I know I’m not going to strike everyone out
I’m looking for them to hit because I know I have a good defense and I know that they’re always going to have my back
They pick themselves up and they recollect themselves

Blalock gets the nod as Feltner goes on the IL
The Colorado Rockies (6-26) have struggled with consistency with their starting pitching as of late but had some hope thanks to Ryan Feltner. However, with Feltner landing on the injured list with back spasms, they will turn to another rookie to face the San Francisco Giants (20-13) and hopefully gain some offensive traction
Bradley Blalock (0-1, 10.29 ERA) will take the place of Feltner and make his second start of the season. His previous start came on April 27 against the Cincinnati Reds at Coors Field
While he allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings of work
three of those runs came in the first inning
and Blalock settled in for the next three innings before running into trouble in the fifth when he loaded the bases
resulting in bad counts that have led to the trouble
Opponents are hitting .387 against him and he owns a 2.00 WHIP
so he’ll have to be careful with the Giants' lineup over the plate
He’ll be opposed by reliever turned starter Jordan Hicks (1-3
Hicks has worked at least five innings in all but one start
he allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings of work

the new Philly-cheesesteak restaurant in the East Village co-owned by Bradley Cooper
of the piercing blue eyes and the considerable acting-directing chops
the roll split lengthwise and filled with a glorious gloop of cheese (smooth and saucy Cooper Sharp
no relation to Bradley) and sliced rib-eye steak (tender
paper-thin) run through with sweet ribbons of griddled onion
It’s the best cheesesteak I’ve had in New York
which isn’t saying much; it’s just as good as the best one I’ve had in Philadelphia

His high standards for the insides of the sandwich are a fair part of Angelo’s magic
but the real miracle is his bread: graceful torpedoes of flour and yeast and dough
autumnal golden-brown and dusted with sesame seeds
Most bread used for cheesesteaks tastes like nothing; it serves as a container and a handhold

wish only blessings—may he receive every Oscar his heart has ever desired; I even forgive him for serving a runny egg yolk on a perforated plate in the movie “Burnt”—grew up just outside Philadelphia
he seems to approach cheesesteaks with the same intensity that he brings to his directorial endeavors and his awards-season campaigns
much of the considerable line) was related to his celebrity
Especially in the restaurant’s early weeks
but the wait’s grown no shorter—forty-five minutes on one of my visits
it is almost identical to the one served at Angelo’s
There’s that heavenly bread—baked in-house
to DiGiampietro’s exacting specifications—stuffed with that creamy colloidal dispersion of meat and cheese; it’s even slightly under-seasoned
with a paleness of flavor that can result from too many rich ingredients in too great a quantity
But the lack of salt is easily remedied with the application of pickled peppers
which are sharper and more vinegary.) The only real difference
is that the onions at Danny & Coop’s are mixed in with the beef on the griddle
while in Philly they’re cooked and added separately
The sandwich is a near-replica of the one served at Angelo’s Pizzeria
a popular Philadelphia restaurant run by Cooper’s partner
Danny DiGiampietro. It’s actually pretty easy to hop down from New York to Philadelphia—it can take me longer to get from Park Slope to Greenpoint
depending on the emotional state of the subway—but the East Village is a simpler proposition
for all the raptures this cheesesteak sent me into
I feel a strange unease about New York City being home to one of the finest examples of Philadelphia’s most iconic food
(This is the same disquietude I feel about the Chicago-style pizza at Emmett’s
which I prefer to most Chicago-style pizza in actual Chicago—the soft imperialism of New York City!) The sandwich may be the Angelo’s sandwich
but the experience isn’t the Angelo’s experience: the line is a very East Village line
gray-toned where South Philly is in warm browns and reds
The interior is half taken up by the kitchen
There’s a bit of a provisional feeling to it all: the restaurant is a restaurant
It’s open three days a week; friendly reminders of dates and times are issued via a Danny & Coop’s Instagram account
which doesn’t otherwise seem to be too meticulously maintained
It’s the only thing that gets lavished with attention
