FILE - Branford Marsalis walks onto the stage during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans
Marsalis is taking on a new job in his hometown of New Orleans
2024 as the new artistic director for the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music
Ellis Marsalis was the patriarch of a family of accomplished New Orleans musicians that also includes trumpeter Wynton Marsalis
said in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of the formal announcement
Marsalis will be carrying on a legacy of music education in the tradition of his father at the center
where on Tuesday afternoon he played “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans” before turning the stage over to a group of students
“Most of them are probably not even going to be musicians,” he said of the young people who attend programs at the center
“But I think that much like most high school kids playing football are not going to become professionals
we’re going to use the discipline of music and the philosophy of hearing and all these things to help them ascend in whatever
both of my parents were kind of like that.”
The center provides music and cultural education programs — and not just for young people
“One of the funny things that started with the center — these kids were coming home
Can we get some lessons too?” said Marsalis
He was sitting in the control room of the center’s recording studio
where musicians who live in the Musician’s Village can record for small fees
we have a lot of musicians who are making records here
Branford Marsalis and fellow New Orleans musician Harry Connick Jr
spearheaded the development of the village to provide housing for New Orleans musicians who lost their homes after levee failures during Katrina led to catastrophic flooding
wanted to do more than just help musicians attain home ownership
I’ve always wanted to start this school.’ And I said
‘A school’s impractical.’ And then it just very quickly became — Harry brought up the idea to our manager
Ann Marie Wilkins — and it became a community center where music was kind of used as the driving force
We were going to use music the way that a lot of these community centers use basketball in sports.”
so did the idea of naming the center for Ellis Marsalis
who took an immediate interest in the center
“He had all these ideas,” Branford Marsalis said
“And he communicated a lot of those ideas to Ann Marie — for hours.”
Marsalis said he is proud to step into his father’s shoes at the center
He described his role as part of a tradition of New Orleans musicians continuing the city’s musical legacy
“We’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing,” he said
that even the Katrina disaster could not have ended
we’re talking about 120 years of musicians who have done this for each other
Katrina was just a bump in the road,” Marsalis said
there was never any question in my mind that the city would rebuild and that the musicians would come back because

the global HIV scientific community has had its eyes firmly set on developing medicines that can keep the virus suppressed
Remarkable progress has led us to a stage where people living with HIV generally are able to manage it as a chronic condition and can expect to live longer
Developing medicines with a good safety and efficacy profile for long-term management of HIV is vitally important to ensuring people living with HIV can remain virally suppressed and healthy
Our scientists face several challenges when discovering
designing and bringing new HIV medicines to clinical development
Collaboration is the key to finding the solutions to these challenges – and it’s at the heart of what we do at our HIV research facility in Branford
the site hosts more than 30 specialist scientists working across the spectrum of medical development
from early-stage discovery through development research
They are responsible for discovering and developing innovative treatments to help people living with HIV
Having these experts working together in the same laboratory facility enables us to be efficient and learn from each other in real time
This means that we can begin the clinical development process much earlier
the learnings from clinical trials are immediately fed back to the discovery program
explains exactly why Branford is so unique:
Hear from Mark Cockett as he discusses the work at the Branford facility
Being the only HIV-focused research and development facility means that the entire site is dedicated to one purpose: “HIV is a virus that affects millions of people worldwide
and ViiV is one of the only companies dedicated to developing new medicines for people living with HIV,” says Dr
Product Lead in Clinical Development at ViiV Healthcare
both the discovery and development phases of our clinical research are in Branford
“One of the strengths of our site here in Branford is that we sit side-by-side with early development
Anything that goes on in discovery they know about
anything that goes on in early development we know about
we collaborate in early development,” says Mark Krystal
Head of the Biology Group at ViiV Healthcare
Hear from Mark Krystal as he discusses the work at the Branford facility
The patient is at the forefront of everything we do. “ViiV is very much focused on patients
focused on every aspect of a patient's life and how we might improve that with the drugs and products that we produce,” says Mark Cockett
While one might be very happy on the drugs they are on
another may struggle to take their medication regularly
Developing drugs that solve these issues for the patient is what drives the Branford facility
“We've got several things in the pipeline that we're working on. It just means eventually we'll have more options for patients who are living with HIV, which is really what brings me to work every day,” says Michelle DeGrosky, Clinical Development, ViiV Healthcare.
Since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy HIV has become a long-term health condition
as many people living with HIV with access to treatment are now living longer
Positive Perspectives study results indicate that many people living with HIV still aspire to treatments that have even less impact on quality of life

Ned Lamont officially asked Nutmeggers to "stay home
Patch paid a visit to Shelley's Garden Center on Main Street in Branford
The coronavirus had by then already begun to tighten its grip
and it was soon clear that we'd all be indoors for the foreseeable future
A reporter looking for some joy to bring home stopped by and was greeted by the owners
towering rosemary plants and pansies and more pansies
robust hanging plants and a hot house filled with succulents
but bringing a plant inside is perhaps a good idea
Indeed, they did. That day, we learned about Shelley's beginnings. Read that story here.
A routine shopping excursion at the much loved
we'd often stop and chat with John and Yvette Chambers
to check in on the Chambers family after a shoot-out next door
helped police even as they hid for safety as gunshots rang
That day in April 2021, a terrifying scene played out. Read that story here.
the bucolic beauty and tranquility that is Shelley’s Garden Center
was shattered when the bullets began to fly
A police standoff in Branford (in 2021) saw one person shot and ended with the suspect dead
Police had the suspect barricaded inside a second floor apartment for hours
a reporter had visited many times to wander among the flowering plants
we learned of the closing of the garden center on April 30
that's been a beloved fixture for 74 years
"When the matriarch of a 74-year strong family legacy passes away
other than reminisce of how it all began here at Shelly's — our own little slice of heaven
The Chambers family started the business in a parking lot more than 70 years ago
it states that "...our family has been providing Branford and the surrounding towns with the best hand-selected plants and supplies we can find
We work with local nurseries to bring you the highest quality options for your lawn and garden."
the family wrote: "....it is with a heavy heart and much consideration that the Chambers family have decided to close
Although this is such a heart-wrenching decision for us to make
many of our reasons are outside the realm of our control
and cherish all of the good years we have had alongside you
We will not forget our years of conversations
while watching your gardens and children grow
and we will not forget the families whose traditions we have helped honor from generation to generation
To say that we cherish our community is an understatement
and this does not make our decision any easier."
"Thank you everyone for all of the good years we have had with you as our grandparents' legacy has grown on the corner of Main Street, in the sweetest little town of Branford. By the grace of God, we will continue to make happy memories!" (You can read the full farewell message here)

New Orleans jazz saxophone master Branford Marsalis and his quartet throw down hot jams to heat up a cold rainy night in San Francisco
It’s night two of a four-night residency for Marsalis at the classy venue that’s become the largest non-profit jazz presenter in the world
But it’s not too classy that you can’t enjoy a drink during the show
like some of the performing arts centers that won’t let patrons bring drinks into their pristine concert halls (which seems almost antithetical to the concept of live jazz.) The seats here all have drink holders
and the auxiliary bar even has a barrel-aged Manhattan on the menu
As to the renowned jazz sax master from New Orleans
Branford Marsalis continues to occupy a lofty artistic space that garners acclaim such as “the highest echelon of jazz tenor saxophonists” (Los Angeles Times) who “leads one of the most cohesive
intense small jazz ensembles on the scene today” (Associated Press)
But what really makes Branford Marsalis a lasting star in the larger pop cultural scheme of things is how he’s conquered nearly every genre in popular music
enabling him to draw fans from many sectors of the music world
Marsalis is more about doing his own thing these days, as he told PopMatters in 2019
but his thing can incorporate a wide array of aesthetic elements
making it interesting to see what he’ll do next
there’s some banter about the heavy weather
with Marsalis referencing Mark Twain’s quote about summer in San Francisco and imagining the wintertime
Things heat up quickly as the group go right into a high-energy tune with Marsalis on soprano sax over a swinging groove from bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner
Pianist Joey Calderazzo goes off with a dynamic piano solo
It turns out to be Calderazzo’s song “The Mighty Sword” from the quartet’s 2012 album Four MFs Playin’ Tunes
which could be an apt description of this band throwing down on any given night since they’re all monster instrumentalists
It serves as a mere prelude for the following number
It starts as a bluesy power trio-style groove
with Calderazzo leading the way before Marsalis comes in with some smooth tenor sax
The chemistry between the four band members really gels here as they keep building up the energy of what soon becomes a sizzling jam
while Calderazzo’s fluid piano lines start flowing like water from a hose that merges with the sax melodies for some uplifting sonic alchemy
The quartet are really feeling it now because they keep on going
with the rhythm section pushing the powerful jam in what starts to feel like a hard rock direction
But it’s the Branford Marsalis Quartet playing tunes on a Friday night at SFJazz
The big jam turns out to have been Keith Jarrett‘s “‘Long as You Know You’re Living Yours” from 1974’s Belonging album
Jarrett honed his skills with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis during his cutting-edge electro-funk fusion era in 1970-1971
so it’s easy to see where the grooving jam influence emerged here
But the Branford Marsalis Quartet version goes deeper than the six-minute studio track to take the song to a higher dimension
The Branford Marsalis Quartet bring it down on Calderazzo’s ballad “Conversation Among the Ruins”
then picking up on a mid-tempo groove with more flowing piano
Marsalis comes in on soprano sax again before the quartet bring it back down with Faulkner clapping beats out with his hands
Marsalis informs the audience of the first three song titles while teasing Calderazzo a bit for griping about the walk back up Mason Street to the band’s hotel up on one of The City’s famously steep landscapes
Marsalis introduces the next number as a 1931 classic from Sammy Fain
infusing a charmingly romantic old-timey vibe into the set and with a slow drum solo spotlight for Faulkner
The band groove again on the next number with more flowing piano from Calderazzo
There’s another dynamic groove here while Marsalis and Calderazzo weave their melodies around the rhythm section
Reevis digs into some bluesy bass soloing over tight syncopations from Faulkner and Calderazzo
followed by Marsalis throwing down some excellent alto sax soloing as the whole unit grooves in masterful fashion
The heady jam turns out to be “Spiral Dance”
another number from Jarrett’s 1974 Belonging album that now appears to be a lost classic
The theme continues as the band follows with another feel-good jam on “The Windup”
a third song from Jarrett’s Belonging album but one that the Branford Marsalis Quartet recorded their version of on 2019’s The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul
Calderazzo leads the way over an up-tempo groove before Marsalis goes off with dazzling sax work as he and Calderazzo trade melodies back and forth on a sensational jam to close out the nearly 90-minute set
The Branford Marsalis Quartet take it back to what sounds like old-school New Orleans on the encore of “Bucket’s Got a Hole in It”
with an extra guest sax player joining the fun for a festive jam to close out the evening
which feels somewhat early by Friday night standards
But that generates an opportunity for a nightcap at a nearby watering hole like the Phonobar on Grove Street
where DJs spin vinyl on a high-end sound system while patrons sip on delicious craft cocktails

Shelley's Garden Center is right next door
When the pandemic began in March 2020, Patch spent a couple of hours with the Chambers family
who advised that bringing plants into one’s home during lockdown may help fight both the blues and the virus
In a phone interview Wednesday morning with Chambers-Scussel
she described what her family went through as the house next door was the epicenter of an active shooter incident
Chambers-Scussel’s daughters were out in the back of the center playing with their puppies
that was late being delivered and it had finally arrived
In the driveway of the nursery were stacked pallets packed with soil and dry goods
it would not have been so filled as they keep their center open and airy so customers are free to roam
Tuesday it was a very good thing that all this was stacked
provided protection and limited the shooter’s visibility
they thought it was fireworks but soon realized they were gunshots
a woman who’d never been before but had recently tested negative for COVID-19 was there to buy flowers and then off to visit her mother
ran for cover to the part of the shop where dog beds are stored
Chambers-Scussel said it was the safest place as it’s all concrete with large furniture pieces around
albeit with Chambers-Scussel calming demeanor setting the tone for her children
they shots continued to ring out: the “ping
Chambers-Scussel said that she could tell the difference in the sound of the bullet discharges; different firearms were being used
She said that she waited for the opportunity to run to the upstairs
“We waited for a reload and ran as fast as we could upstairs to our grandmother's house.”
Her father John Chambers often helped the man who lived on the second floor at 241 Main St
John Chambers was on the phone with police in the first few minutes
He’d positioned himself behind a just-delivered pile of soil
Chambers-Scussel said her dad had a direct line of sight and saw the man with a long gun
He told police what he could see and directed them as best he could
her children and the customer were upstairs
With a “birds-eye view” of the seven-hour siege
they were escorted to their car by police and went home
“God watched over us all,” Chambers-Scussel said
We’re raising them in the true eye of the world
so close and so scary and in our sanctuary
I’m grateful that we were able to handle the situation calmly
We’re a disgustingly optimistic family,” she said
We try to make the best out of every situation
ours is the one because it happened and it isn’t going to haunt us," Chambers-Scussel said
"We’ll continue to be as grateful as we’ve always been.”
Chambers-Scussel said that her family has the “highest respect” for law enforcement and the military and that she and her children “felt safe” once police arrived
“knew they wouldn’t let anything happen to us.”

whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger
The original New Haven bar was opened in 1898 by Irish immigrant Archibald Moore
Fuchs would re-open it in 1982 as zoning issues had shuttered it
first served in Buffalo in 1962 and which had become hugely popular
Fuchs said that though there are locations in New Haven
Fuchs credits his partners in the Branford location
Meeting minutes state that the complex will be 21,760-square-feet and it will house Pickleball and Padel courts and also the addition of outdoor Pickleball and Padel courts
"Perry Maresca (Economic Business Development Manager) – He has seen the plans and met onsite and he felt it was impressive
Pickleball is popular and there are other courts in the area
He felt indoor courts are needed as well and the location is ideal
The shared parking will be beneficial as well
He noted it’s an ideal use of the property."
The Shore Line Times reports that The Hinding Group of Branford
plans to begin construction within a month
The project also features high-end locker rooms, and a "brewery tap bar," the Shore Line Times reported. The facility will be called All World Pickle and Padel, according to the Shore Line Times. (Read more at the Shore Line Times)

Administrative building at the Branford Water Pollution Control Facility
Branford owns and operates a Water Pollution Control Facility on Block Island Road
The facility collects sewage from about 100 miles of sewers and 50 pump stations in Branford
as well as sewage from a portion of North Branford
The Town of Branford Sewer Authority oversees the construction and extension of the sewerage system and has the authority to enact user charges and assessment fees to owners benefiting from the system
The Water Pollution Control Department provides daily operations and maintenance to the system
which serves about 90 percent of existing commercial and industrial areas of the town and almost 85 percent of the residences
when it provided secondary treatment for 1.5 million gallons per day (mgd) of flow
the system was expanded and upgraded to treat 4.5 mgd of flow utilizing an oxygen generator to provide secondary treatment and anaerobic digestion for solids reduction
Treated effluent from the plant flows into Branford Harbor and ultimately Long Island Sound
a 30-month construction project began on the new treatment facility
funded through a combination of State of Connecticut Clean Water Fund grants and two-percent loans
the facility now has the capacity to treat 4.9 mgd of flow and provides biological nitrogen removal with an effluent limit of 4 mg/L of total nitrogen
The sewers and pumping stations collect an average of 3.5 mgd of wastewater and then direct the flow toward the facility for treatment and eventual discharge to Branford Harbor
which is contiguous with Long Island Sound
the plant treated over one billion gallons of wastewater
The Branford plant is permitted under a federal NPDES permit for the discharge of treated water and must comply with contaminant thresholds and removal efficiencies
the NPDES compliance standards have become more stringent with every five-year permit reissue
The Branford water pollution control facility has consistently met those lower thresholds for pollution parameters required under the recent August 2013 permit reissue
Maintenance crews are pleased with pump condition following six months of operation
Among the 50 pump stations managed by Branford is a station located at Burban Street that had been problematic for some time
There were two primary problems at this station: 1) impeller clogging from modern day trash and raggy
and grease (FOG) from a nearby nursing home and restaurants
which accumulate and float on the water surface
If town staff did not travel to the station weekly and clean it with a vacuum truck or fire hose
the FOG would congeal and become an even bigger problem
requiring many additional labor hours to resolve
Town staff were spending at least one to two hours with one or two personnel every week at this site
It was becoming a big headache considering the limited resources Branford had for managing 50 pump stations
MultiSmart Control Panel simplifies control of Flygt N-Pump's advanced features
pumping equipment at the Burban Street station was recently upgraded as part of a capital project
and Branford chose to use Flygt N technology pumps to eliminate clogging issues
Two Flygt NP 3171 HT model submersible pumps were installed
each capable of handling up to 1,300 gallons per minute (gpm) and 63 feet of total dynamic head
34-horsepower motors and high chrome impellers
The pumps are also more efficient than their predecessors
which will save Branford money by reducing energy costs
solid objects slide along the tip of the impeller vane inside a relief groove
The guide pin in the insert ring pushes all types of solids away from the center of the impeller
Deciding to go with N technology proved to be a wise decision: clogging issues were quickly resolved
Branford began evaluating different solutions
knowing all the while that new equipment may or may not have resolved the issue
But the main concern was adding additional mechanical equipment needing maintenance in the basin
The mechanical mixer required routine maintenance itself and bubble mixers have a compressor that not only needed routine maintenance but was also loud and required a heated enclosure
approached the town with a possible solution and offered a demo option of a Flygt MultiSmart controller
a MultiSmart control panel with a Flygt PumpView3 SCADA system was shipped to the site four weeks later
Manufacturer's representatives and experts were on hand to support the town for the start-up of the controller and setup of the SCADA system
and FOG-ring avoiding functions were enabled and continuously monitored remotely by town personnel
Wet well cleaning is highly successful due to both the N impeller and pump reversal features that permit snore cycles to keep the wet well clean
Branford personnel are able to predictively monitor pump efficiency
looking for changes that might require maintenance
Open hatch grate over wet well reveals guide rails in foreground
Wet well cleaning was operating every fifth cycle with alternating pumps and snoring
Pumping was continued an additional 30 seconds as the check valves of the pump station were 30 feet away and required this amount of time to ensure the FOG and any other floatable solids were completely pumped out of the station
Although it is not optimal to allow other pumps to snore
these new pumps are designed to run dry if needed because their closed-loop cooling system prevents them from overheating
This operating mode now keeps the wet well clean while the PumpView3 SCADA system provides the town peace of mind through its remote monitoring and operating capabilities
The new pumps and controls have given Branford a complete solution for its pumping stations
Now the town is interested in converting other problematic pump stations and utilizing MultiSmart functions for additional reasons
such as phase monitoring to prove to the utility company that there are occasionally over- and under-voltage situations at other pump stations
