a rising child actress from Brazil has died at the age of 11 after suffering multiple heart attacks amid a battle with recent illness
Brazil is mourning the loss of a rising star
Millena Brandão, known for her work on the Netflix series Sintonia, has died
her parents Thays Brandão and Luiz Brandão confirmed
“Open letter to my little girl. On May 2nd we lost our little girl, but I'm sure she's in the arms of our almighty father and in a beautiful place to play,” her parents wrote in a lengthy Instagram statement
“The memories we spent together will remain in my memory and I'll never forget your joy that was contagious to everyone around you
I'm already missing you more and more not having you here and I know I'll miss you even more in the days to come!”
“You were the light in our lives and I know that from up there you'll continue to watch over us and light up our lives,” the message continued
I love you my girl 12/27/2013 to 05/02/2025.”
Millena’s parents shared insight into the illness she’d been battling
the 11-year-old suffered multiple heart attacks and in addition had an undetermined mass on her brain
"She got worse, with two to three cardiac arrests per day. She had 13 arrests in total,” Thays told Brazilian outlet G1
There was one day when she had seven respiratory arrests
Sometimes they gave her massages and other times they gave her shocks [with a device called a defibrillator].”
Millena was intubated and did not regain consciousness
leading her parents—who are also parents of a 2-year-old—to take her off life support
"I said that if we were to let her little heart stop beating on its own
“And we asked for the machines to be turned off."
Millena’s official cause of death has not yet been determined
Thays and Luiz shared a video on Instagram May May 5 of Millena through the years alongside the caption
“Our eternal angel went o shine in the sky
may you take care of us and protect us from all evil.”

For the last year, the energy and climate narrative has been intimately intertwined with questions about AI’s impact on energy demand
As tech companies race to construct new data centers
As I talked to officials on the ground in Brazil this week
the topic seemed to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue
is that AI [power demand] is satiable with usage of renewable energy sources,” Luis Manuel Rebelo Fernandes
told me on a panel at the Web Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
There are signs the bet is paying off: dozens of data centers are in development across Brazil as big tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft pour billions into the sector there.
It’s an important story for Brazil and the Latin American market
but I share it also to illustrate the competitive dividend that can come from clean energy
As electricity in some emerging market countries increasingly comes from solar power
they may stand to gain foreign investment—not just from AI but also from any foreign investor who wants their products made cleanly.
Brazil’s clean energy story begins long before climate change became a global concern
the country built dams to power its industry
harnessing some of Brazil’s 37,000 miles of waterways for fuel development
the country was building mega dams that on their own provide much of the country’s power
Because dams aren’t necessarily near cities
Brazil built an extensive transmission system creating an integrated network
which is set up in a complex maze with three main regions with regulatory authority divided between states and the federal government.)
Brazil didn’t create a clean grid to be able to tout an environmental message
as big companies continue to work toward their climate goals (even if more quietly than before)
“Brazil is well positioned,” Luciana Aparecida da Costa
“But we know that we have to compete with other countries to attract this.”
as much as the country’s electric grid is a selling point
sparking concerns about the reliability of hydropower
And a rapid rise in electricity demand could stress the grid just as is happening in the U.S.
To address those concerns, the Brazilian government has prioritized supporting new renewable energy generation to go along with new data centers. Funding to ensure that happens is a key plank in the county’s $4 billion AI plan launched last year
“Every expansion of high performance computing is associated in the plan to the development of dedicated sources of renewable energy,” said Fernandes.
And private companies are looking to do the same. In April, for example, Reuters reported that TikTok parent company ByteDance was considering a massive data center investment in Brazil as the company grows its AI footprint—with new wind power attached
That’s where the models that AI runs on are being developed
and where the most capital is being deployed
But Brazil’s pitch—and its early success—is a reminder of the competitive appeal of clean energy in the global market

Corumbá the puma was named after a river in the central Brazilian state of Goiás
as much of the world was locked down by the COVID-19 pandemic
Corumbá embarked on an epic journey through the state
he crossed different fragments of vegetation
He stayed at PESCAN for a period before moving on
Corumbá walked more than 120 kilometers (75 miles) during the 11 months that he was monitored by a GPS radio-transmitter collar
when the transmitter’s battery died and the collar released itself from around Corumbá’s neck
“[The cat] moved beautifully in the landscape, and we identified the fragments that he traveled through between the two parks,” says biologist Fernanda Cavalcanti de Azevedo, executive coordinator of the Mammals of the Cerrado Conservation Program (PCMC), which is connected to the Federal University of Catalão (UFCAT) in Goiás
“This enabled us to attribute a level of priority for the conservation of these specific regions because the puma acted as our ‘tool,’ showing us which areas they are.”
In this part of Brazil, pumas go by a number of names: leão-baio, suçuarana and onça-parda. The predator sits atop Brazil’s immensely rich food chain, alongside the jaguar (Panthera onca), another species considered endangered in central Brazil
The Suçuaranas Detetives project was created when two independent but related projects linked to the PCMC came together: Ecological Detectives
a research project that began in 2020 to generate data on the puma’s ecology; and Backyard Suçuaranas
which came two years later to study issues related to human-wildlife interactions in the regions surrounding the protected areas
These projects are the result of a collaboration between PCMC and the Goiás state environmental agency
“We needed to understand how certain key species were using the territory — not only the conservation units but also the regions surrounding them — and the relationships between wildlife and humans,” says Maurício Vianna Tambellini
a SEMAD official who coordinates both the PEMA and PESCAN parks
“We already had data from monitoring pumas
we chose them because pumas are an animal that needs a lot of territory
we were able to better understand the species and create a management target for the conservation unit that would guarantee the cat’s survival.”
During the very first conversation Tambellini had with the PCMC team
the idea was born to create a project that would involve both state parks and thus encompass both the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes in the state of Goiás
It would allow for recent puma sightings to be analyzed within the context of the two different ecosystems
transforming the species’ physical movement into a “compass” that would help define the most important zones for environmental protection
There’s a scientific basis behind the idea of using a species as a conservation tool: the main goal is to reinforce research for a potential ecological corridor in the 80-km (50-mi) stretch between PEMA and PESCAN
it will seek to recuperate this region by planting native tree species in both biomes
compensating rural landowners for their participation
The goal is to ensure that pumas and other native species in the region can safely travel through the corridor
Before the pumas can become “ecological detectives,” their routes and habits in the region must be understood
Experts installed camera traps inside both parks and took expeditions to collect data on signals like paw prints and scratch marks
The field studies also collected biological material like the animals’ feces and carcasses of their prey in order to learn what the pumas eat
some of the pumas were captured and fitted with GPS collars so their movements could be mapped
The three capture campaigns carried out so far were inside PEMA. In 2022, experts captured two male pumas that they named Corumbá and Pema (after the park). Both animals were monitored for a year
which is as long as the tracking collars work
The only puma still being monitored in 2024 was a female named Vulcanis
her wanderings cover territory that extends beyond the park limits
Vulcanis walked far enough to cross the Corumbá River
which lies dozens of kilometers to the north
giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) and capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
Cavalcanti also points to the reproductive habits of female pumas
known for their ability to mate with different males during their fertility period
the females avoid territories dominated by males to keep their young out of danger
“The camera traps photographed more males than females
but that doesn’t mean there are more of them
The females just avoid confrontations with the males to protect their young,” Cavalcanti says
a male may kill a cub that’s the progeny of another male
Aside from the social interactions that occur during mating season
the male leaves to patrol his territory and defend it from other males
goes on to give birth to a litter of one to four cubs and proceeds to care for them by herself during their first year of life
The young males leave their mothers at a younger age than young females
This behavior explains why more young males meet their end as roadkill than young females
animals fleeing the flames embark on new routes
“The wildcats use open areas modified [by human activities
like highways] to cross from one fragment to another,” Cavalcanti says
“These animals live in areas with vegetative covering like uncleared pasture with many bushes or forest where they can hide
pumas need a place to crouch and hide before they kill their prey.”
the range that these cats need to live can vary in size
the average size of territory for each puma was 210 square kilometers (80 square miles) for each monitored individual
But the region that Corumbá covered in southwestern Goiás was nearly 10 times larger
Pema was the champion in terms of area covered per month
while Vulcanis was the most reserved in her wanderings
an area similar to that covered by the cats monitored in Minas Gerais state
At least 15 pumas have been identified in PEMA and PESCAN since the project was launched
this is cause for celebration since these wildcats are rare here
these state parks share several species of wildlife
tayras (Eira barbara) and maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus)
PEMA is also home to otters (Lontra longicaudis) and tapirs (Tapirus terrestris)
together with jaguars and bush dogs (Speothos venaticus)
“It is amazing that a park measuring less than [10 km2
or 4 mi2] like PEMA can be home to nearly all the carnivores we know in the transition region between the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest,” says Frederico Gemesio Lemos
maned wolves and hoary foxes have also been sighted inside Terra Ronca State Park (PETER)
the third conservation unit to join the Suçuaranas Detetives project since 2024
PETER is home to what’s believed to be one of the largest cave complexes in Latin America
Within its 570 km2 (220 mi2) are more than 300 caves
and a rich diversity of Cerrado fauna including the endemic Pfrimer’s parakeet (Pyrrhura pfrimeri)
Capture activities inside PETER and PESCAN may begin within the next year
The team has already traveled to PETER to install camera traps
and speak with community members living there
“We hope this project will help people to gain a new perspective on the park and its fauna and flora,” says Wesley de Andrade
“We hope they will learn to understand the place inside out as a managed conservation unit.” He adds it’s important to involve the local community in the work to protect species
The park is part of a mosaic of conservation units abutting Terra Ronca Recanto das Araras Extractive Reserve
and is part of the wider Serra Geral de Goiás Environmental Protection Area
“A conservation unit’s greatest challenge is to deal with conflicts and transform them into green business opportunities for the state and for the community,” Andrade says
Since the current administrators began bringing projects to the park and involving the people who live there
they’ve been able to generate income by paying freelancers and hiring park employees
He points out that this has helped some people associate protecting the environment with financial gain and quality of life; today
some of the older community members who used to hunt and carry out illegal logging are working and see themselves as park “guardians.”
Cavalcanti says that species conservation won’t happen without human intervention
Most of the projects came into being with this objective
and it’s the foundation for the Suçuaranas Detetives project
We are collecting ecological data to be able to understand what the species need and then work together with the community to propose strategies and tools that will minimize the impacts [on nature].”
This cooperation between the team of experts and the community is paying off as hoped
The project team is composed of three researchers who live in Água Limpa municipality
which means they interact with the community daily
a PCMC biologist working on human-wildlife coexistence
says local recognition of the pumas seems to have improved since the project came into being
but today people feel like they have a connection with these animals
They talk about ‘the puma ladies’ and the ‘friends of the pumas.’ On many occasions people spontaneously ask questions about them
Ferreira says that evaluating the changes in people’s perceptions about the animals is complex
because the way they thought before the projects began must be considered
followed by the creation of targets and indicators for activities and monitoring
the team went door to door in rural communities with questionnaires to evaluate people’s attitudes
“What we want to know now is whether all this has brought about any change in attitude about killing wildcats and larger environmental questions
We especially want to hear what people active in the region think and want in terms of conservation and coexistence with the region’s biodiversity,” Ferreira says
One thing they expect in the coming years is to co-develop an action plan that incorporates discussions on coexistence and biodiversity conservation in the regions where the project is operating
Interviews and workshops focused on the data revealed by the original surveys will be held in the first phase
along with other topics like interaction with wildlife to find out if there have been any changes in opinion among the locals on the issue
When Pema the puma was captured in PEMA the park
the researchers realized that he’d already been seen on the Raposinha do Pontal Project’s cameras in Corumbaíba
where he fathered at least one litter of cubs
“Could he have been killed?” was the question that echoed among the monitoring team
Pema appeared in a social media reel posted by a farmer in Pontal
Pema returned to the park he was named after
Predators at the top of the food chain are indicators of a healthy ecosystem
and with respect and good neighborly conduct

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark returned to her old stomping grounds Sunday
The former Iowa star led the Fever in a preseason friendly in Iowa City against the Brazilian national team
After sitting out Indiana's preseason opener against the Washington Mystics on Saturday
Clark returned to the Fever's starting lineup for her homecoming
Indiana looked completely dominant throughout the game
After fielding a mob of pregame autograph requests
Clark hit one of her signature 3-pointers to open the game
while the other two members of Indiana's Big Three — Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston — played well in limited minutes
while Boston pitched in 11 points and seven rebounds
who signed with the Fever from Dallas during the offseason
The game was the second friendly for the Brazilian team, which lost 89-62 to the Chicago Sky on Friday
But the Fever's win Sunday seemed particularly dominant: Not even halfway through the fourth quarter
as Clark and the other starters sat out the final quarter
After a number of offseason changes — including a new coach in Stephanie White and a number of veteran free-agent acquisitions — the Fever look like a potential contender this season
Clark said Indiana will be aiming for a championship
and she feels the Fever are set up for success
so it's gonna take some time to put it all together
we've got some really great veterans who've won before and then we got some people back and Steph's amazing and our staff
More than 13 months after her final game there as a college at Iowa, Caitlin Clark once again got the chance to thrill the crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City
It was the second of three preseason games for the Fever
Clark had missed Indiana’s preseason game Saturday against the Washington Mystics with a left leg injury
but logged 19 minutes and made six of her 10 shots
The reigning WNBA rookie of the year was one of four starters from a new-look Fever team to finish in double figures
Kelsey Mitchell had a game-high 17 points and three steals
Indiana made 15 of its 33 3-pointers (45.5%) and forced 26 Brazil turnovers
The Fever will wrap up its preseason on Saturday with a matchup against the Atlanta Dream before their regular-season opener on May 17 against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky
Here are updates and highlights from the Fever's blowout victory against Brazil:
REQUIRED READING: 'It sold out in 45 minutes.' Iowa can't wait to celebrate Caitlin Clark homecoming
including a 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range
the Fever looked like a much-improved squad from what it was a year ago when Clark was a rookie
rolling past the Brazilian national team 108-44
Kelsey Mitchell led all players with 17 points and three steals while Clark had 16 points and a game-high five assists in her return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena
While Indiana's win was just an exhibition game against an overmatched opponent
it's worth noting Brazil lost to the Chicago Sky by 27 points on Friday
With Clark likely on the bench for the rest of the afternoon
the Fever is up 90-35 on the Brazilian national team
Indiana has dominated in every facet of the game
holding Brazil to just 25% shooting and forcing its opponent into 19 turnovers
On what was likely her final play of the afternoon
with the Fever up by 52 late in the third quarter
Clark crossed halfcourt and proceeded to pull up to swish a 35-foot 3-pointer from only about a foot behind where she broke the NCAA Division I women's basketball career scoring record in 2024 during her senior season at Iowa
Clark's deepest 3 during her rookie season with the Fever was 32.5 feet
For as much excitement as there was about Clark's return to Iowa
the Fever is having its way with the Brazilian national team
Indiana is 24 of 42 from the field (57.1%)
including a ridiculous 12 of 18 from 3-point range (66.7%)
After grabbing her fifth rebound of the day
Clark immediately turned her eyes up court and tossed an outlet pass to a streaking DeWanna Bonner
who caught it in stride and got a layup to extend the Fever's lead to 40 points
It was the second assist of the day for Clark
Fever up 20 on Brazil at end of first quarterCaitlin Clark and the Fever are having no problems with the Brazilian national team through the opening 10 minutes
A Clark transition 3-pointer pushed Indiana's lead to 20
Clark has six points and has made two of her three 3s in seven minutes
The Fever stretched its first-quarter lead to 15 points in style
with Sydney Colson finding Natasha Howard with a deft behind-the-back pass on a 2-on-1 fast break for an easy layup
In what’s undoubtedly a familiar sight for the thousands crammed into Carver-Hawkeye Arena
Caitlin Clark made her first shot of the day
coming off a screen and appearing to absorb some contact to drain a 3-pointer from the top of the key for the first points of the game
In the hours leading up to the Fever’s game against Brazil
there had still been a question of whether Caitlin Clark’s Iowa homecoming would include her actually playing in the game
On that front, the home fans in Iowa City got some good news, as Clark was listed as available on the Fever’s pregame availability report
Clark missed the Fever’s preseason opener against the Washington Mystics with a left leg injury
something Clark described as “a little bit of tightness.” She went through warmups with the team and wasn’t wearing a brace
"She had a lot of progress in the last 24 hours, and that was our goal," Fever coach Stephanie White said Saturday
"Our goal is to see how she progresses every day
so we'll see what happens and see how she feels after the workouts that she went through today
and then hopefully she'll be ready tomorrow."

Two people were reportedly arrested over an alleged bomb threat hours before Gaga's Rio de Janeiro concert on Saturday
Brazilian police say they prevented a planned bomb attack targeting the free Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night
According to a statement from police
a group was attempting to attack "children
and the LGBTQIA+ community." Two people allegedly involved were arrested in raids across different states
the attack's alleged organizers were recruiting participants online — including teenagers — to carry out the bombing using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails
was to frame the attack as a "collective challenge" and gain notoriety on social media
Police said one person arrested was the alleged leader of the group
and the other was a teenager arrested for storing child pornography
Police said 15 search and seizure warrants were served against nine "targets" in multiple cities and that authorities gathered "electronic devices and other materials."
A representative for Lady Gaga did not immediately return NPR's request for comment, but told The Associated Press that the pop star's team learned about the alleged threat via media reports on Sunday morning
nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks."
In an Instagram post following the concert
the artist said the show was a "historical moment."
"Thank you Rio for waiting for me to come back
Thank you little monsters all over the world," she said
I will never forget this moment," she wrote
Last year, Madonna held a similar free concert at Copacabana Beach. An estimated 1.6 million people attended that show.

playCarlo Ancelotti's move to Brazil in jeopardy (0:40)Take a look at the important news and notes about Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti's potential move to Brazil being stuck at an impasse
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on Thursday extended its deadline for Carlo Ancelotti to take over as men's national team coach, sources told ESPN, and is willing to wait until Real Madrid's fate is decided in the LaLiga title race
Madrid are currently four points behind leaders Barcelona with five games left to play
with the two sides set to go head-to-head in another Clásico clash on May 11
In the meantime, sources told ESPN that there remains a stand-off between Ancelotti and Madrid over the manner and timing of his departure from the club, which needs to be resolved before he could accept the Brazil job
The CBF are keen to have a new coach in place on May 26, when Brazil's latest squad will be named for World Cup qualifiers in June against Ecuador and Paraguay
ESPN reported earlier this week that Ancelotti and club president Florentino Pérez are expected to meet to discuss the situation in the coming days
Ancelotti had appeared to be close to an agreement with the CBF -- he has been their long-term, preferred candidate to take over ahead of the 2026 World Cup -- but financial wrangling over his Madrid exit is now proving to be a stumbling block
Madrid's last game of the LaLiga season, against Real Sociedad
will be played on either May 24 or 25 at the Bernabéu
risks a significant reduction in his settlement from Madrid if he leaves to take charge of Brazil
with the club expecting compensation from the CBF in exchange for releasing the coach from his contract
Madrid customarily pay managers a six-month severance package when they are dismissed
regardless of the length of their remaining contract
Another source told ESPN that a possible compromise would see Madrid paying Ancelotti a percentage of his remaining salary
Although Ancelotti is the CBF's preferred choice as coach -- and he has been made aware of that fact -- it is also considering alternatives such as Al Hilal's Jorge Jesus and Palmeiras' Abel Ferreira

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro state, in co-ordination with the justice ministry, said suspects had recruited participants to carry out attacks using improvised explosives and the plan was aimed at gaining notoriety on social media.
The person responsible for the plan and a teenager were arrested, the police said.
Lady Gaga's team said they learned about the bomb threat only from media reports the morning after the gig. A crowd of more than two million people gathered for the concert, which was free to attend.
Police said the group that planned the attack had been spreading hate speech, mainly against children, adolescents and the LGBTQ+ community.
The alleged mastermind was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, while the teenager was detained for storing child pornography in Rio.
Those responsible were also promoting the radicalisation of teenagers, including self-harm and violent content "as a form of belonging and challenge among young people".
A spokesperson for Lady Gaga told The Hollywood Reporter: "We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning.
"Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks."
The justice ministry said the suspects had identified themselves as Lady Gaga fans, known widely as "Little Monsters".
Police issued search warrants across the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paulo, and electronic devices and other materials were seized.
"Operation Fake Monster" was launched following a tip-off from Rio state police intelligence, which uncovered online groups encouraging violence among teenagers using coded language and extremist symbolism.
The concert was paid for by the city in an attempt to revitalise Rio's economy, with expectations it could bring in $100m (£75m).
In a massive security operation, 5,000 officers were deployed and attendees had to pass through metal detectors. Drones and facial recognition cameras were also used to police the event.
Lady Gaga, who last performed in Brazil in 2012, took the stage as part of a tour to promote her eighth album, Mayhem.
The singer wore Brazil-themed costumes for some of her acts, with outfits inspired by the national football team.
"You waited for more than 10 years for me," an emotional Lady Gaga told the huge crowd, holding out a Brazilian flag.
Headliners at the California music festival this year include Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone and Green Day.
The Giver singer speaks about her fearlessness and being inspired by Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter.
As she returns to pop with her seventh album, Mayhem, Lady Gaga reflects on the loneliness of fame.
This week also sees the release of Split Fiction, R-Patz's new film Mickey-17 and Meghan's delayed TV show.

Lady Gaga performs at Copacabana Beach on May 3
Two people were arrested in Brazil for allegedly planning to bomb Lady Gaga's free concert
Lady Gaga's Saturday concert in Brazil made history — in spite of a planned bomb attack and "satanic ritual."
The record-breaking show at Copacabana Beach was the target of a failed ambush that Rio de Janeiro police said was aimed at the LGBTQ+ community
Rio de Janeiro police announced Sunday that they had arrested two people in connection to a planned attack at Lady Gaga's free concert on Copacabana Beach Saturday night
The two allegedly sought to recruit teenagers to detonate Molotov cocktails and homemade explosives
The alleged leader of the group was arrested on illegal weapons possession charges
and a teenager was arrested on child pornography charges
The two reportedly sought to post as "Little Monsters," the name Gaga has given her fans
leading police to dub their investigation "Operation Fake Monster."
A third person was arrested after subsequent investigations by police for allegedly planning to carry out a “satanist ritual by killing a child or a baby” during the concert
The goal of the planned bombings at Lady Gaga's performance was “gaining notoriety on social media,” officials said at a press conference Sunday, multiple outlets reported
The suspects intended to primarily target the LGBTQ+ community
“They were clearly saying that they were planning an attack at Lady Gaga’s concert motivated by sexual orientation,” said Felipe Cury
Police Chief Luiz Lima added that the group had spread hate speech and violent content on social media “aimed at gaining notoriety in order to attract more viewers
more participants — most of them teenagers
Lady Gaga's team said that they became aware of the planned bombings through news coverage the next morning
and that there were no known safety concerns ahead of the concert
“We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning,” a spokesperson for the singer said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter
nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks
Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”
Gaga herself had responded to the record-breaking attendance numbers the night before, writing in a post on Instagram that "an estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing
the biggest crowd for any woman in history."
"Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show — the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil," she wrote
"The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away
I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you."
Lady Gaga’s show in Brazil was part of her global tour promoting her new album, Mayhem
The city of Rio de Janeiro has been sponsoring free concerts on the famous Copacabana Beach in an effort to promote tourism and boost the local economy
Madonna played a show to about 1.6 million fans on the beach last year
and similar events are planned through May 2028
Organizers said that over 2.5 million people attended Lady Gaga's concert at Copacabana Beach
approximately 500,000 of whom travelled from abroad to attend
The concert marked the biggest in Gaga's career
and the largest-attended show by a woman musician in history
surpassing Madonna's show in Brazil last year
Rod Stewart still holds the largest free concert Guinness World Record for his show at the same beach on New Years Eve in 1994. Over 4 million people were in attendance.

Fan-filmed video of KERRY KING's May 4 performance at the Bangers Open Air festival at Memorial Da América Latina in São Paulo
In a recent interview with Nick Bowcott of Sweetwater
Kerry spoke about how he chose the musicians for his eponymously named solo band
Joining the 60-year-old SLAYER guitarist in the group are drummer Paul Bostaph (SLAYER),bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH),guitarist Phil Demmel (formerly of MACHINE HEAD) and vocalist Mark Osegueda (DEATH ANGEL)
I don't have anything against people like… I don't even have an example
but somebody my age getting in a band with somebody 25
I've got nothing against it; I just didn't wanna do that
I wanted us to look like a cohesive group of people
came out in May 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music
All material for the LP was written by the SLAYER guitarist
The LP was recorded in 2023 at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles with producer Josh Wilbur
Last month, Kerry told Igor Miranda of Rolling Stone Brasil about his plans for a sophomore solo album: "I made up two songs since I've been home from this U.S
but we have stuff to work on when we get together
is whenever [the] cycle [for 'From Hell I Rise'] is done
and right now that looks to me like October
Paul and I have always talked about going straight from playing live
taking maybe a week off and go right in the studio to keep your tour chops
so you're firing on all cylinders — you don't gotta practice to get good; you're already good — and get in there and record it
it would be done this year and then just hand it to the record company and say
Asked if he would like to "maybe explore some different influences
like going a little more into punk rock" on the next album
I think punk was pretty well covered on ['From Hell I Rise']
from 'Everything I Hate About You' to 'Two Fists'
So it wouldn't surprise me if that shows up 'cause it's part of my history
my thought would be just make an extension from what 'From Hell I Rise' is
see what the next 10 or 12 [songs] sound like."
King kicked off his first-ever headlining tour on January 15 at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco
which featured MUNICIPAL WASTE as special guest and ALIEN WEAPONRY supporting
wrapped at House of Blues in Las Vegas on February 22
King authored all the lyrics on "From Hell I Rise"
"I finished everything before Mark knew he had the gig," he explained
"But that's not to say he will or won't write on record two." Circumstances dictated that King sing on all "From Hell I Rise" demos
"I did scratch vocals on everything," King said
and I need some distortion to help me out a little bit
'I got this if whatever we're looking for doesn't work.' Luckily
Kerry said that he knew people would compare "From Hell I Rise" to SLAYER
"I'm not afraid of that because I think it stands up to anything we've done in our history
But he was quick to add: "There will be people complaining
'Why does it sound like SLAYER?' And 'why doesn't it sound more like SLAYER
the KERRY KING band performed its first live show at Reggies in Chicago
the band went from playing an intimate venue to performing at the huge U.S

with the goal of “gaining notoriety in order to attract more viewers
more participants.” No explosives were reportedly found during the investigation
Police also say they separately arrested another man who “threatened to kill a child live on air” in the municipality of Macaé
Police officer Maria Luiza Machado further alleged to CNN that the man believed Gaga was a Satanist
and that he intended to perform a ritual killing during her concert to “respond in the same way.”
Police dubbed the investigation “Operation Fake Monster,” referencing Gaga’s fandom
collectively known as the “Little Monsters.” But Gaga’s team
said they had no knowledge of the investigation or possible attacks until after the concert
“We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning,” a spokesperson for Gaga told news agencies on Sunday
Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.” (The Civilian Police’s statement stated that the investigation was “carried out discreetly and precisely
avoiding panic or distortion of information among the population.”)
“I love you so much and I’m so sorry for all the pain that you’re going through,” Gaga told trans “Little Monsters” earlier this year, in an interview with Them
“I think right now is a time for community and togetherness and to stand up for each other.”

02 May 202500:30(UTC)The Peregrino FPSOPhoto: Felipe Torres / EquinorEquinor Brasil Energia Ltda., a subsidiary of Equinor ASA, has entered into agreements(1) with Brazilian company Prio Tigris Ltda., a subsidiary of PRIO SA (PRIO3.SA) for a sale of its 60% operated interest in the Peregrino field in Brazil.
PRIO, Brazil’s largest independent oil and gas company, will pay a consideration of USD 3.35 billion and a maximum of USD 150 million in interest to Equinor for the transaction. The final cash payment will reflect the closing date and any deductions generated by the asset since the effective date, which is 1 January 2024.
Equinor will be responsible for operations of the field until closing of the transaction, after which PRIO will take over operatorship.
“With this transaction we realise value from a long-standing asset in our Brazil portfolio. Brazil will continue to be a core country for Equinor, as we focus on starting up the Bacalhau field and continue progressing the Raia gas project. With these two operated projects and our partnership in Roncador our equity production in Brazil will be close to 200,000 barrels per day by 2030,” says Philippe Mathieu, Executive Vice President for Exploration and Production International at Equinor.
“This deal is part of Equinor's ongoing effort to high-grade its international portfolio through asset divestments and acquisitions. We continue to see growth potential and opportunities to extend the longevity of our international oil and gas portfolio, also in Brazil,” says Philippe Mathieu.
Equinor has been operating the Peregrino field since 2009 and around 300 million barrels of oil have been produced by the asset since. Peregrino is a heavy oil field and consists of a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) platform, supported by three fixed platforms. The field is in the Campos Basin, east of Rio de Janeiro. In Q1 2025, Equinor´s share of production from Peregrino was around 55,000 barrels per day.
Last year, PRIO acquired Sinochem’s 40% interest in the Peregrino field.
“PRIO has been a valued partner since joining the Peregrino license last year and we look forward to a smooth hand-over with them,” says Veronica Coelho, Senior Vice President and Country Manager for Equinor Brazil.
The transaction is subject to regulatory and legal approvals. The payment will occur in two tranches, one at signing and a further one closer to closing. The payment will be subject to customary adjustments.
1: The deal is divided in two parts, one for the acquisition of 40% and operatorship of Peregrino, the second for the acquisition of the remaining 20%. The 40% operation will receive a payment of USD 2,233 million, with an additional payment of USD 166 million which is contingent on the completion of the second part of 20%. The 20% operation will have a value of USD 951 million. The final component is USD 150 million of maximum interest, reaching the total of USD 3.5 billion.

California thrash metal pioneers DARK ANGEL performed as a four-piece at the Bangers Open Air festival in São Paulo
May 3 after an alleged airline mishap forced guitarist Eric Meyer to miss the show
Eric took to his Facebook page to write: "All of our LEGIONS OF DARKNESS in BRAZIL!
THANK YOU for giving DARK ANGEL such a warm welcome!!
the airlines completely FUCKED ME on this one."
He added: "I was truly gutted that I wasn't there
This was the FIRST time I've not played a show with [DARK ANGEL]
I am looking forward to seeing ALL THE BRAZILIAN METAL FANS NEXT TIME!!!!"
DARK ANGEL released "Extinction Level Event"
the title track of the band's first new album in 34 years
which is due later in 2025 via Reversed Records
The LP was recorded and mixed at the Armoury Studios in Vancouver
executive produced by DARK ANGEL drummer Gene Hoglan
produced and engineered by Rob Shallcross and mixed by Mike Fraser
Upon its arrival, the "Extinction Level Event" title track was met with a mixed response from DARK ANGEL's longtime fans, with one fan writing on Facebook: " I was just listening to 'Time Doesn't Heal' this week
Listening to this song i was like: 'Is that really Ron
What happened to his voice?' Let's hope the album has better songs
Totally not worth waiting 34 years." Another fan chimed in: "All that hype
I would say that's a great start but for DARK ANGEL
Nobody expects a new thrash gem like 'Darkness Descends' or a tech cult classic like 'Time Does Not Heal'
but something like 'Leave Scars' would be awesome and respected."
"The Metal Command" radio show host Tony Webster offered a scathing review of "Extinction Level Event" on Facebook
It's four minutes and 16 seconds of my life that I wish I could get back after listening to it," he wrote
uninspired and right now most people are talking about how terrible it is."
Some of the DARK ANGEL fans were more complimentary of the band's new song
with one fan writing on Facebook: "Yeah vocals are a bit crazy but the riffs are on point." Another fan wrote: "The vocal is a bit different to what Ron Rineheart sounded like but that was 34 years ago
It sounds like DARK ANGEL which means they have their own particular sound rather than sounding like another 1,000 standard metal bands
I can't wait to hear the album." A third fan wrote: "It would have to grow on me but currently my opinion is contrived from their own formula with less altogether good vocals
Doesn't mean it won't grow on me or that the rest of the album won't be good
I am pleased that they're back and hope they make a few more runs at it." A fourth fan said: "People can piss on this all they want but I like it
A few decades pass and people expect everything to stay the exact same
It's metal and crushes most of the new crap out there today."
We made an album for us and where we are at now
The "Extinction Level Event" title track was written by Durkin a decade ago
long before he suffered from severe liver disease
"Jim Durkin left us with this badass tune," Hoglan said in a press release in April
"It is so DARK ANGEL and I'm just so excited about it
We made it the lead-off song on the record
not as a tribute to Jim or because of sentimental reasons — like
'Here is the song that Jim left us' — but because it's just a totally killer song
and by today's standards it's still ball-crushing."
The "Extinction Level Event" artwork and layout was designed by Cain Gillis
Hoglan told the "Everblack" podcast about "Extinction Level Event": "It's a pretty ferocious record
but now that we're getting closer to the release
things are starting to get closer to finalized with it."
Durkin played on the band's first three albums — 1985's "We Have Arrived"
1986's "Darkness Descends" and 1989's "Leave Scars" — before departing the group in 1989
He was part of DARK ANGEL's lineup when the band reformed in 2013
Durkin had been sitting out some of DARK ANGEL's gigs
He was replaced at the shows by Hoglan's wife Laura Christine
who has since joined DARK ANGEL as a permanent member
DARK ANGEL released two albums with Don Doty on vocals — the aforementioned "We Have Arrived" and "Darkness Descends" — before he exited the group and was replaced by Ron Rinehart (after a brief stint with Jim Drabos in 1987)
The band issued two more studio LPs — "Leave Scars" and "Time Does Not Heal" — before calling it quits in 1992

A large portion of the WNBA's recent rise in interest can be attributed to a phenomenon known as the "Caitlin Clark Effect," centered around the widespread popularity of the Indiana Fever star
Prior to becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the '24 draft
Clark spent four standout seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes
where she not only became the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer
but also cemented her legacy as a cultural icon in the sports world
Clark is now set for a homecoming this Sunday
as she and her Fever teammates will play a preseason game against the Brazilian National Team at the University of Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena

Pop singer Lady Gaga set the record for biggest attendance for a female performer during a free performance in Rio de Janeiro over the weekend
The 39-year-old singer attracted a crowd estimated to be 2.5 million people strong for her Saturday night show at Copacabana Beach
The concert was sponsored by the local government in an effort to help stimulate the local economy
During her performance, Gaga told the crowd, “Your spirit may be heard around the world tonight. Two and a half million people,” per Variety
“Thank you for making history with me… The people of Brazil are the reason why I can shine.”
The outlet noted that the “Bad Romance” singer last performed in Rio 12 years ago
Fans stood in line for hours hoping to get a good spot
performed older songs like “Poker Face,” “Bloody Mary,” and “Alejandro” along with songs from her newly released album
The record for most concert attendees for a single female performer was previously held by Madonna
who played for a crowd of 1.6 million at the same location in May 2024
While free concert attendance is only based on estimates and is therefore impossible to determine for sure, it’s believed that the most attended concerts overall were those of French composer Jean-Michel Jarre in Moscow 1997 and Rod Stewart’s concert in Copacabana in 1994
which are both believed to have attracted audiences of about 3.5 million people
Lady Gaga’s latest show is also making headlines due to two suspected terror attacks, which were never carried out. Per CNN
two people were arrested for attempting to “recruit” people to deploy explosives and Molotov cocktails on the crowd
these individuals were targeting LGBT revelers and wanted to “[gain] notoriety on social media.”
Another person planning to perform a “satanist ritual by killing a child or a baby” during the show was arrested and charged with terrorism offenses
“nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show – the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil.”
The singer wrote that “the sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away
I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you.”
