Police said a 38-year-old Fort Greene man was fatally stabbed on the subway Friday morning in Lower Manhattan during rush hour
NYPD officials said John Sheldon was riding a southbound train on the 4/5/6 line around 8:40 a.m
leading Sheldon to become enraged and start shouting
The other man then stabbed Sheldon once in the torso
After the train stopped at the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station
continued shouting and the other man stabbed him a second time on the platform
First responders took Sheldon in critical condition to Bellevue Hospital
Police said they were looking for a man in his 30s wearing a black jacket and black headphones who fled the station after the incident
Officials were still investigating the incident and whether the men knew each other
Sheldon is the first person to be killed in the city’s transit system so far this year
The NYPD recorded 10 homicides in public transit last year
The MTA said southbound 4 and 5 trains would bypass Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall while police investigated. The transit agency said riders could board and exit 6 trains on the station’s northbound platform, and could take southbound 6 trains from 14th Street–Union Square for service to City Hall.
Correction: Due to incorrect information initially provided by the NYPD, an earlier version of this story misidentified the stabbing victim. This story has been also been updated with additional information.

Authorities are sweeping the Piscataqua River and local shoreline Thursday after police were notified by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation that a person jumped from the middle bridge connecting Portsmouth to Kittery
City police received a report of a missing person just before 10 p.m
The report was made by a relative of the unidentified person
Police began checking surveillance footage around the city for signs of the person reported missing
The state Department of Transportation notified Portsmouth police Thursday morning that it had found footage of the reported missing person jumping from the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge the night before
The person went over the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge railing around 8:49 p.m
though the jump was not reported to any law enforcement
The incident on the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge occurred nearly two hours after an adult male jumped from the Piscataqua River Bridge
which prompted an emergency response and led to that person being found in the water and brought to Portsmouth Regional Hospital
New Hampshire State Police announced Thursday afternoon
Police believe the person who jumped from the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge is still in the water
“That person has not been seen or heard from since,” he said
Portsmouth police deployed a drone Thursday in an attempt to locate the missing person
“We did do a shoreline search using our drone unit just to cover the shoreline up from the I-95 bridge up to Peirce Island,” Keaveny added
Coast Guard assisted in the search efforts
as did the Newington and Rye fire departments and Kittery’s harbormaster
Portsmouth police are not releasing the identity of the person from the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge incident
We know no one’s had any contact with them
That’s where we’re at right now,” he said Thursday afternoon
Law enforcement and medics responded to the Piscataqua River right after 7 p.m

Bridge City — The Bridge City Independent School District is once again seeking community support for a $27.5 million bond to construct a new performing arts center
aims to address the lack of facilities meeting University Interscholastic League (UIL) requirements
forcing students to travel for competitions
Superintendent Mike Kelly emphasized the necessity of the center
"Whether it be for strutters spring review or band contests
those students are leaving our district to go to venues that have a stage that is UIL approved
whereas they don't have that in our high school cafeteria."
The proposed 45,000-square-foot facility would be located behind the high school and would not result in an increase in the district's tax rate
Kelly attributed the feasibility of the project to industrial growth in the area
"Our students would gain some experience running sounds
curtains and those sorts of things for these folks that we host
and then that money would go back into our programs," Kelly said
highlighting the dual purpose of the building as a community venue
"I know that our family will for sure benefit from it but
there's hundreds of families that will benefit from this," she said
"I just don't think it's right to leave that much debt for our kids and grandkids to pay."
both sides agree on the importance of early voting
The district is holding its final informational meeting at the middle school on April 29th at 6:30 p.m.
coinciding with the last day of early voting
The district reiterated that the bond would not increase property taxes
despite state law requiring bond ballots to indicate a potential tax increase

BRIDGE CITY — A small group gathered outside Bridge City City Hall on Thursday
for a demonstration aimed at taking a stand against big issues -- racism and bullying some say is rampant in Bridge City
Denise Lewis and her husband Adrian are one of the families saying these issues have made it hard for minorities to live in Bridge City
Neither my family nor my children have been protected," said Denise
The Lewis' say their son has been targeted for his race at Bridge City High School
they say he was cornered in the bathroom and punched in the genitals by another student
"He's suffering physically and mentally as well
Nobody wants to have this happen to their children," said Denise
The Lewis' say in the 6 years they've lived in Bridge City
they've removed their children from school twice because of sexual assault and harrassment
Lewis says children were touching her son's backside
"When I went to the school on the matter they replied with 'things are done differently in the athletics department,'" said Denise
The Lewis family says school administrators have ignored many of these instances
neglecting to immediately report what happened to the family or BCISD Police
"In the middle school children were singing a KKK chant to our son inciting to murder him," said Denise
"Our son was told that they were going to hang him."
The Lewis' and other supporters with similar experiences say the problem at Bridge City's schools is indicative of a larger attitude in the community
Kill all Nig****" were spray painted on the street in front of the family's home
They say they're the only minorities living on the street
the National Minister of Politics for the New Black Panther Nation
Matthews led Thursday's demonstration
How can you not protect the citizens of Bridge City from these rotten scoundrels that put this on their street?" Matthews said in a press conference
The family says when going to Police about the sexual harassment their son experienced and the racist messaging
they've been denied the option to make police reports until getting the FBI involved
They've also been unable to get copies of their reports
Documents we received from the family show the incident involving the racist messages is being labeled as "criminal mischief" and not a hate crime
the family is hoping to spark a change in Bridge City
"We need to address it and we need to expose it and we need to demand accountability," said Matthews
the chief of police and the school officials
You better get ready because we coming."
Bridge City Mayor David Rutledge says he's lived in Bridge City for 64 years and been Mayor for nine
he says he's never known racism to be a problem
but I've been here long enough that I think I have a pretty good pulse on the people
"I just don't see that as being a viable complaint."
the police department investigates all reports
but he admits he isn't sure why the Lewis' couldn't get copies of reports they made
Mayor Rutledge says he'd heard about the racist remarks spray painted at the Lewis home
"It makes me angry because that's the kind of stuff I don't like seeing in our city," said Rutledge
"I don't know who would have done that
The Mayor Rutledge says the city wouldn't be involved in anything related to the school district
but he's not aware of a bullying problem either
He wants the Lewis' to file a formal complaint so the city can launch an internal investigation if necessary
"I don't want any of my citizens to feel intimidated or persecuted or anything like that," said Rutledge
"We don't tolerate that kind of stuff."
The Lewis' say they've once again removed their son from school and have already moved out of town
The Lewis Family says it plans to sue city entities It feels have allowed hate crimes against them
We reached out to Bridge City Police and BCISD for responses to the family's allegations
Matthews asks anyone whose experienced racism or bullying in the city or school district to reach out to her at 832-291-9995

BRIDGE CITY — A Bridge City mom tells KFDM her son has been bullied in the Bridge City School District for over three years
and after years of trying and failing to get help
the family may be leaving the city completely
Xenia Bartz says her son Skylar Zimmerman is 12 years old and has special needs
but she describes him as being gentle and big hearted
he tries to find the positive in life," said Bartz
"He tries to still help people and love people."
but he won't be returning to school when the holidays are over
Bartz says the things her son has endured from other children and now parents in Bridge City ISD are "heartbreaking" and "disgusting."
the 12-year-old was secretly bringing two lunches to school because he knew his would be stolen
Bartz also recalled a time where Skylar was cornered in the bathroom and students looked at his private parts
She says they have been calling him names related to his genitals ever since
"It destroys me because I don't understand why people have to target kids with special needs
"We're supposed to be teaching them better."
Bartz says her son has been through everything one can imagine at the hands of other children
She has extensive documentation of these incidents
a file folder thick with the details of numerous transgressions against her son
communication with school administration and school-implemented "stay away orders" on at-least five other children
Bridge City Middle School's Principal Grady Welborn or Assistant Principal Nicole Harris confirm that Skylar "did not provoke
or contribute to the escalation of the incident in any way," and say there is "no evidence to suggest that [Skylar] played an active role in initiating or worsening the confrontation."
Bartz says Welborn and Harris are the only one's who have tried to help her this year
but she says administration has still told her to keep Skylar home on days where they "can't be there to protect him," essentially having him miss instruction while his bullies are in school and thriving
"I've done everything to stop this and it just continues and now it's continued to adults bullying children."
school administrators say Skylar's bullying worsened after the parent of one of his bullies lied about an incident between him and the child who stole from him on social media
Bartz says this same parent has leaked information about Skylar's grades and what grade he should be in
information she could only have gotten from someone working at the school
"No one knew that except for the school
and we did not inform anybody of that," said Bartz
Bartz says that same parent has sent her family death threats
even saying Skylar should be punched in the face and people should walk away even if he's bleeding to death
Bartz says she's tried everything -- hoping to meet with the parents of Skylar's bullies
but she's only ever gotten anywhere with one school board member
Bartz says police refuse to file reports even with the death threats and Superintendent Mike Kelly has only ever spoken with her through Facebook Messenger
"I pulled him out because my son is not safe and I fear for his life
I fear for our lives with this," said Bartz
"We wanna go somewhere where we can find family that's not family
They want us to leave because they don't wanna confront the issue."
We reached out to Bridge City ISD detailing Bartz and Skylar's journey
asking why Skylar was being kept home while his bullies are still attending school
and asking how another parent got access to his private information
Superintendent Mike Kelly responded with the following statement:
especially knowing some of her son's bullies has now begun bothering her daughter
"It kind of makes me disgusted in a way because that's not true
my son wouldn't have went through three years."
Bartz says she's already pulled Skylar out of school and plans to move to an area that's more open minded
but she says there are other Bridge City parents with stories like hers and children with stories like Skylar's
She hopes the school will finally take action moving forward
I would hope that they would before they lose another child," said Bartz
"What is it going to take for them to do something about this?"
Bartz' final question is one Bridge City ISD neglected to answer
Bridge City ISD sent KFDM a follow-up statement to the original report regarding student privacy and stay-away agreements

— Bridge City Collective is hosting a grand opening for its East Dubuque dispensary this weekend
will offer a wide range of cannabis products
Bridge City Collective President David Alport said the dispensary is large enough to accommodate busy crowds
He said a majority of the planned 25 staff members have already been hired
“It’s spacious and we have a lot of staff to help people,” Alport said
Alport said Bridge City Collective’s penchant for craft cannabis — which he compared to craft beer for its production in smaller batches and higher quality — helps it stand out
“We have some really cool East Dubuque shirts,” Alport said
There will also be an outdoor communal space adjacent to the dispensary
a water feature and benches when the weather warms up
and generally setting up in downtown East Dubuque
Alport said his company hopes to help the community thrive
as a way to stimulate investment and revitalize that downtown core area,” he said
The dispensary will have discounts for educators and for customers aged 60 and older
grand opening will include discounts of up to 50% and
pop-ups with product vendors and complimentary food from local food truck The Hangry Hobo while supplies last
A portion of the day’s sales — up to $1,000 — will go to East Dubuque Greater Events (EDGE) Foundation and local American Legion Post 787
“We’re just excited to be there and serve the community,” Alport said
Bridge City Collective was formed in 2010 in Oregon and now bills itself as a “coast-to-coast fellowship of cannabis operators
activists and innovators,” per its website
Bridge City Collective Dispensary East Dubuque will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. More information is available at bridgecitycollective.com/east-dubuque-dispensary/

Bridge City — Voters in the Bridge City ISD have a $27.5 million dollar question to answer May 3
The school board has called a bond issue to build a new Performing Arts Center at Bridge City High School
Administrators say the initiative will provide students with a modern facility without increasing the district's tax rate
The district says it has strategically structured the bond program
recognizing the financial challenges facing public schools
including a lack of increased state funding since 2019
coupled with rising inflation and unfunded mandates
"Bridge City ISD is uniquely positioned to pursue this investment due to significant industrial growth in the area
including recent investments from companies like Golden Triangle Polymers and Entergy," the district stated in a Facebook post
