Utah (KUTV) — Residents are speculating that a meteorite struck Ogden on Saturday night after several people reported seeing a bright green ball of light streaking across the sky
Videos and images began circulating on social media around 9:30 p.m
One resident shared surveillance camera footage showing what appeared to be a ball of light soaring across the northern sky
Another described the spectacle as a “huge green fireball.”
A woman in Ogden posted a photo of what she said was a plume of green smoke near 12th Street and Harrison Boulevard
She noted that she saw a bright flash in the sky
followed by an echoing sound and rising smoke
Although the fireball appeared to fall in Ogden
it was visible from as far away as Riverton
At the end of April, NASA reported the annual Eta Aquarids meteor shower would be active from April 20 to May 21
Authorities said these meteors are known for their high speed and would be visible in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres
2News has reached out to local authorities for more information and confirmation

playChido Obi and the Premier League's youngest starters (0:57)After Manchester United's Chido Obi made his first Premier League start at the age of 17
take a look at the youngest players to have ever started in the competition
Manchester United suffered a third Premier League away defeat in four matches on Sunday as they lost 4-3 to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium
It was almost a nightmare start for the Red Devils when Luke Shaw headed a ball narrowly past his own goal following a lack of communication with goalkeeper Altay Bayindir
who endured a shaky start before settling into the match
Garnacho provided some hope in the 82nd minute with a spectacular effort to reduce the deficit, and Amad's goal in injury time came too late to rescue the game
There were positive moments of linkup play between Mount and Garnacho, who combined for three chances across the 57 minutes that the England international played. Christian Eriksen's performance after replacing Mount was also noteworthy
with United struggling to garner any control before he was brought on
Alejandro Garnacho and Amad both scored 7/10. Andrew Kearns - CameraSport via Getty ImagesManager rating out of 10Ruben Amorim, 5 -- A focus on resting multiple key players ahead of their Europa League semifinal second leg against Athletic Club on Thursday saw Amorim rotate his squad
but some young players struggled against Brentford's aggressive pressing and physical style of football
The substitutions had a positive effect on the game
with Eriksen's influence changing the match
particularly in enhancing his side's attacking buildup
GK Altay Bayindir 5 - Unconvincing early-on but made several important saves, including a close range header from Christian Nørgaard
Little he could do about the goals he conceded
DF Luke Shaw 5 - Almost headed the ball past Bayindir in the opening minutes. Unfortunate with his own goal after Damsgaard's effort was deflected off him. Replaced at half-time by Leny Yoro
though that looked to be managing minutes ahead of the Athletic Club game rather than his performance
DF Matthijs de Ligt 5 - On the floor when United conceded their second before being forced off with an injury. Replaced by Harry Maguire
DF Tyler Fredricson 3 - Battled well when isolated in the early exchanges but mistimed his jump for Brentford's second goal to allow Schade to head in
Drawn to the ball on Brentford's fourth goal
which saw Wissa make a third-man run to put the game out of reach
MF Kobbie Mainoo 5 - Struggled to influence the game from midfield against Brentford's aggressive press
Took up better positions to create space when moved further forward after Eriksen came on
MF Manuel Ugarte 6 - Battled well in some moments but could have been better on the ball
Booked after giving it away before a foul to prevent a cross
Provided assistance for Amass against Mbeumo in the second half
MF Patrick Dorgu 4 - Almost anonymous in the first half
Offered little help against the threat of Schade
and no encouraging signs when going forward
FW Alejandro Garnacho 7 - One of Manchester United's brightest
Garnacho's driven cross to assist the opener was delivered with pinpoint accuracy
Made amends for missing a chance in the first half with an excellent strike to provide a glimmer of hope late on
FW Mason Mount 7 - Timed his run perfectly to get ahead of the Brentford defense and connect with the cross
Unlucky not to register an assist after returning the favor to Garnacho on the cusp of half-time
FW Chido Obi 6 - At 17 years and 156 days old, he became United's youngest-ever starter. Worked hard to chase down balls while leading the line
applying pressure to Brentford's defenders as they tried to clear
Fared better in the second half when the Red Devils were more patient in their attacks
35) 5 - Worked well when dealing with Brentford's set pieces
but often found himself outnumbered when the opposition overloaded the box
Could have been narrower on Brentford's fourth goal to stop the pass getting to Kayode
Added much-needed height after Amorm's side struggled to deal with balls in the air
46) 7 - Drove at the defense and tried to get things moving in the right direction
Linked well with Garnacho during transitions
Scored in the 95th minute after beating his man and striking on his left foot
Christian Eriksen (Mount 57) 7 - Involved early after coming on when combining with Garnacho
Looked to drop slightly deeper to try to help build attacks from midfield
Helped United establish a greater level of control in the game
capping a solid performance with the assist for Garnacho's goal
Victor Lindelöf (Fredricson
76) N/R - Introduced for the final spell of the game after a difficult day for Fredricson

When she set out to adapt her best-selling novel Long Bright River for television screens
Philly author Liz Moore was committed to portraying the opioid crisis in Kensington — the backdrop for the novel and its adaptation
now streaming on Peacock — with accuracy and empathy
Both tend to be challenging to capture in many fictional takes on addiction
Moore said in an interview last month before the show’s premiere
In this historically working-class community
residents are protective of how their neighborhood is portrayed — and wary of decades of media productions that define it solely by the crisis on its streets
“One of the things we talked about was involving the community at every level,” Moore said
explaining that she and showrunner Nikki Toscano discussed at length “the ethics of making art about Philadelphia
and specifically art that would include Kensington.”
The show follows Michaela “Mickey” Fitzpatrick
a police officer working in Kensington whose sister
As a serial killer targets sex workers on Kensington Avenue
“One main reason to tell a story like this is to give a new perspective and to breed compassion
We’re hoping to help be a voice for a community that’s incredibly resilient,” Seyfried said
who heads the harm-reduction organization Savage Sisters
who plays Kacey and visited Kensington Avenue several times to prepare for the role
“We would talk about my substance use in Kensington
about survivor sex workers and the things we did — what it’s like to be a person going through that crisis
compounded with violence against women and police indifference,” Laurel said
but I was very impressed with the way Ashleigh took her time with it.”
Cummings has family members who have also struggled with addiction
but was raised in Australia and had never heard of the crisis in Kensington before auditioning
I tried to spend as much time down the Ave as possible,” she said
“There are a lot of exploitative eyes on Kensington
but our responsibility was to engender empathy
Mickey walks down Kensington Avenue with her new partner
“How could someone choose to live like this?” A few scenes later
answers the question: “When these women started using,” he says
said the cast didn’t want to make “voyeuristic television.”
“We didn’t want people to be shocked into it
We want them to have empathy from the inside
[the opioid crisis] is portrayed in such a way where there’s a blanket view of these things
Moore said it was important for the show to portray addiction as a medical condition
not a moral failing — even if some of the show’s characters think otherwise
She also wanted to subvert narratives about “victims” and “saviors” common in crime fiction
“Mickey perceives herself to be morally upright
almost in contrast to her sister at the start
I think she comes to have a much more nuanced understanding of her own complicity in some dark forces in the neighborhood and also within her own family,” Moore said
“She comes to see herself not as the sister who’s done everything right all along
but somebody who’s made some questionable choices herself.”
to portray Kensington as a place with nuance
who has volunteered for years in the neighborhood
“We were really committed to portraying it very holistically — as a place that is underserved
a place with a really fascinating history,” she said
typically avoids media about the opioid crisis — and no fictional portrayal
can truly convey the reality on the street in Kensington
“I think Kensington has gotten a ton of media
a lot of negative media — it’s been trauma porn,” she said
“My hope is that [Long Bright River] portraying it in a compassionate way opens hearts and minds.”

On Sunday, Smith set a career high for hits in a game with four as he helped the Rangers defeat the Seattle Mariners
The Rangers (17-18) desperately needed the win to salvage something from what became a 2-5 homestand
They also need any spark they can get offensively
Amid the demotion of Jake Burger and the relentless lineup changes the past two weeks
“I’m surprised he hasn’t done that before (a four-hit game),” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said afterward
He had good at-bats all day and he’s so important to this ball club.”
Smith had three games with three hits earlier this season
on Sunday — with the roof open — he was almost impossible to get out
He went 4-for-5 with three singles and a triple
As the Rangers get a day off on Monday and head to Boston to start a six-game road trip
Smith is slashing .311/.386/.478 with three home runs and eight RBI
He’s scored 16 runs and has four stolen bases
Smith moved into the leadoff spot during the road trip to Sacramento and San Francisco last week
It was one of several moves to try and shake up the batting order
Bochy moved the struggling Marcus Semien — who had batted leadoff since May of 2022 — down in the order
He hasn’t hit leadoff in every game — Wyatt Langford has taken a turn — but Smith has been the constant and a catalyst
But where he hits doesn’t matter to him — except that maybe he gets a few more first-pitch fastballs to try and hit
“I don’t really change my approach wherever I’m hitting in the order,” Smith said
It’s easy to see Smith remaining at the top of the order
even when Semien’s bat starts to cooperate
He is the prototypical leadoff hitter — quick
can steal bases and has enough pop to make a pitcher respect his ability to go deep
Smith was the only Rangers player to homer in the Mariners series
as he slammed one in the ninth inning on Friday
He’s also the only Rangers player to see time at seven different positions this season
He doesn’t want time at pitcher or catcher
he’s too important to the Rangers to risk at either position right now
“You saw one day he went from center field to shortstop in the same game,” Bochy said
He’s just a great player to have on this team.”

Greek-controlled panamax bulker will be joined on the South Asian recycling beaches by two Asian-owned handies
Piraeus-based Bright Brothers Maritime is reported to have sold a 30-year-old panamax bulk carrier to cash buyers for onward resale for recycling.
The 71,500-dwt Peter S (built 1995) was sold for somewhere between $468 and $475 per ldt on an as-is Khorfakkan basis in a deal that included 350 tonnes of bunkers remaining on board, according to recycling reports published over the weekend.

certainly doesn’t constitute for gratifying reading – neither on paper nor anywhere else – but that’s the reality Real Salt Lake must now contend with after Saturday night’s latest affairs
Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni’s charges slumped to a worrying seventh defeat of the MLS season
fading away to a 2-1 loss away at conference-topping Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place in both sides’ most contemporary round of domestic action
in a scoreline reversal from the teams’ previously most recent meeting at the end of 2024
Saturday might’ve been akin to a non-contest and that
Mastroeni’s men were battered and bruised on a grueling evening on the West Coast and on another day might’ve been forced to come away with a higher margin of defeat
Winger Jayden Nelson sent the league leaders on their way 20 minutes in when he scored a brilliant solo effort
dribbling through two opponents before slotting a low effort into the back of the net
in a first half the hosts utterly dominated
before defender Tristan Blackmon bludgeoned a first-time strike into the near post to double Vancouver’s lead midway through the second period
A few shoots of hope emerged sporadically for RSL across the 90 minutes but
once the hosts got a grip of the game they never let go
and it meant by the time midfielder Diego Luna’s late penalty rolled over the line in the sixth minute of stoppage time the final result had already been as good as confirmed
save for a final few nervy minutes as Vancouver saw out the one-goal win-advantage
The defeat places RSL at joint-top for the most losses in the Western Conference (7)
alongside Sporting Kansas City and LA Galaxy
and joint-second in the entire division behind only CF Montreal with eight defeats
our Player Spotlight series discusses some of the most encouraging personnel talking points from a tempestuous night in British Colombia
No one moreso than Mastroeni will be hoping the adage rings true amidst a tight competition for places within his team – and the foremost subject of his current reasoning
“There’s a little bit of Thierry Henry in him,” Real Monarchs head coach Mark Lowry enthused about the 18-year-old in a club interview he shared near the start of 2024
On the basis of Saturday night’s performance
the fearlessness to go at his man time and time again
and no we’re not talking about Lamine Yamal
What do you need when your team is down and up against the odds
A player not afraid to take matters into their own hands to make things happen and grab the game by the scruff of the neck
Saturday was only his second-ever professional start – you’d have been forgiven for thinking it was his 50th
composed display in hostile territory en route to a 3-1 away victory against San Diego
The 18-year-old only needed eight minutes to begin to make his presence known when his tame deflected shot from a shooting opportunity was eventually gobbled up by Yohei Takaoka in goal for Vancouver
It failed to represent the most sweetly struck strike but it was a good judgment of positioning
consistent outfield player and the most likely source of a route to goal for his team
the RSL academy product outshone all those around him with his skill and willingness on the ball as well as his bravery and effectiveness in running at opponents and creating chances occasionally out of very little
an impressive piece of skill and surge of acceleration saw him square up and easily skip past Vancouver defender Tate Johnson down the byline in the penalty box before clipping a lofted ball across to find Alex Katranis for a header at the backpost for what looked like a surefire goal
But the Greek wingback somehow failed to find the back of the net from six yards out with the goal gaping in front of him
An 18-year-old who plays with the offensive maturity
the West Valley City native also ensured he seldom shirked from his defensive responsibilities
making it a point to track back and double up with defender Justen Glad to try and stifle Daniels
RSL had managed an xG (expected goals) value of 0.44 – concurrently Gozo’s xA (expected assists) figure stood at 0.43
he came close to winning a crucial penalty for the visitors
picking up the ball just inside his own half and embarking on a beguiling
and through the near-entire length of the opposition half before going down inside the box
prompting the center official to immediately point to the spot
the spot kick was ultimately retracted following a subsequent VAR review
squaring up again to Johnson and almost beating him
a deft feint towards the defender’s inside before a late surge to his outside won his side a much-needed corner as RSL searched for a way back into the contest
Mastroeni himself lauded the young winger’s commitment and application at the end of the night
“I think Gozo is doing all the right things
I think having speed on the field makes us a little more dynamic in the attack
his one-v-ones going at the defender created quite a few good crossing opportunities
especially the one where he played it back post to Alex in the first half – that was really good
“The run he went on to get the PK – that’s top stuff from that position
He’s breaking into the team at a moment where he’s playing with confidence and the defending he does on that side is relentless
“I think that’s really a superpower of his
He’s right on the cusp of breaking through and either scoring a goal or setting one up
He’s putting himself in great positions and doing all the right things
I’m just really proud of the way he’s coming into the team
He’s been with us in preseason for the last three years
You never know when the moment’s going to come
and he’s really taken advantage of his opportunities and played really well.”
Next up for RSL is an away clash with FC Dallas
in the final of three successive away matches

Hyeseong Kim made his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night at Truist Park
and manager Dave Roberts has indicated that Kim will remain with the team at least until Tommy Edman returns from the injured list
The Dodgers signed Kim this offseason to a three-year
following a trade that sent starting second baseman Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds
While the Dodgers initially appeared to be planning for Kim to take over at second base
his spring struggles at the plate led the team to adjust their plans
Kim began the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City
where he was hitting .257 with an .801 OPS before his call-up
Roberts explained the decision to bring Kim up: “It’s a process
He’s making strides,” Roberts said of Kim’s adjustments
“And this quite frankly can be a good opportunity for him to see some major-league pitching and to see the quality
and also to get his feet wet to make his major-league debut here in the States.” Roberts added that Kim would likely come off the bench and fill in at different spots
with the possibility of getting some starts
Kim expressed surprise and excitement about joining the Dodgers
“I was very surprised,” Kim said through his interpreter
Henny (Scott Hennessey) announced to me that I was going to go to the Show
I came in with a very happy and very excited mindset
Kim showcased his impressive speed and baserunning instincts
After Andy Pages singled against Atlanta closer Raisel Iglesias
As Iglesias delivered his third pitch to pinch hitter Will Smith
When Smith struck out and the ball dribbled away from catcher Drake Baldwin
Roberts praised Kim’s baserunning prowess
“That’s an instinctual play,” manager Dave Roberts said
… That’s just some of the things that speed and what Hyeseong brings to the table.” The Dodgers envisioned this level of athleticism when they acquired Kim from Korea
recognizing it as a quality the veteran roster doesn’t have in abundance
the Dodgers were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity
They had the tying run on second with no outs
“Kim did an amazing job coming off the bench

He nailed a PAT in the second half of the Huskies’ annual spring football game.
This was a spring capper the way coach Jedd Fisch wanted it, an evening of sanctioned levity at Husky Stadium that at times offered interesting football, too. The Gold team defeated the Purple team, 20-12, though Purple could have trimmed the deficit on the final play if only edge rusher Isaiah Ward had been as adept at placekicking as Coleman.
UW announced attendance at 20,565 — that’s tickets scanned, not distributed — which is a couple-thousand more than what this event drew a year ago. Michael Penix Jr. flew in to be an honorary coach. Former star linebacker Donald Butler represented the other side, and former stars like John Ross III and Sidney Jones attended, too.
Also, Corgis raced at halftime (congratulations to GG, who possessed not only the requisite knowledge that a race was actually happening, but also the quicks needed to win). Gymnasts did backflips down the field to determine which team got the ball first. The winning team earned a steak and seafood feast; the losers earned rice and beans. Players signed autographs and posed for selfies with fans during the game.
“We want to make it a celebration of spring football,” Fisch said. “We also want to be able to get better while we’re doing it. To me, you go play a two-hour game. I don’t know the total amount of snaps, but there was probably 85 to 90 snaps. There was interceptions. There was touchdowns. There was tackles. There was fumbles. There was a lot of things that you can coach off of.
“I don’t know why anyone would want to waste their 15th practice and not be able to coach off of it.”
A bit more about the interceptions, touchdowns, tackles, fumbles and more:

The best way to watch most content is to turn the lights off
this isn't very practical during the day when watching sports with the curtains open or if you simply like to leave the lights on while watching your favorite shows
You don't want to see distracting reflections on your screen
so if you plan on placing your TV in a bright room
there are certain criteria you should consider before purchasing
This becomes especially important if you're in a smaller space with a lamp positioned in front of the screen
The lamp's reflection will be distracting if your TV doesn't do a good job of reducing the intensity of the light
The Sony BRAVIA 9 QLED is the best TV for bright rooms we've tested
Its superb reflection handling and SDR brightness means it easily overcomes glare
so you aren't distracted by indirect reflections on your TV screen. It also does an adequate job of reducing the intensity of direct reflections
but it's still best to try and avoid placing a light source opposite the screen
As impressive as this TV is in a bright room
It has exceptional black levels with almost no blooming
thanks to its highly effective local dimming control
It's also a great option for 4k Blu-ray collectors or those looking to get the most out of high-quality streaming services due to its support for Dolby Vision and DTS audio formats
The TV's image processing is excellent for upscaling and smoothing out low-quality content
It's also very accurate in both SDR and HDR
so it delivers an image that respects the content creator's intent
It's not the best option if you regularly watch shows or movies with a big group of friends
since the image degrades when viewed from the sides of the screen
it's a great option if you need a TV that pairs well with modern consoles
It has HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on two ports for up to 4k @ 120Hz with VRR
so it's fully compatible with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Although most of these picks focus on TVs for bright indoor rooms
Even if you want to use your TV in an enclosure outside
so you'll want something that gets bright enough and minimizes reflections well
Samsung designed this TV explicitly for outdoor use
making it one of the brightest TVs we've tested
it has an IP55 rating for water protection
so you won't have to worry too much if it rains
meaning it looks amazing in any outdoor setup
so the Sony is the better choice unless you plan on using it outdoors
The best anti-glare TV in the mid-range category is the Hisense U8/U8N. It's a great TV for watching shows or sports during the day. Like the Sony BRAVIA 9 QLED
it uses Mini LED technology to get exceptionally bright and overcome glare from indirect reflections
and it does an okay job of lessening the intensity of direct reflections
The TV has surprisingly good image processing capabilities
so movies and shows look good no matter their source
even if it isn't quite as good as the Sony TV
the TV displays very deep blacks with only slightly more blooming than the Sony
The TV's viewing angle is even narrower than that of the Sony
so it's not as good overall if you have a wide seating arrangement
as the image isn't consistent when viewed from the sides
it's an excellent TV for gaming thanks to its low input lag and HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on all four HDMI ports for up to 4k @ 144Hz gaming
making it fully compatible with recent consoles
If you also turn the lights off to watch movies or shows
the TV's local dimming delivers deep blacks that are quite impressive for a TV in this price range
It's even bright enough in HDR to make some highlights pop out against darker backgrounds
you lose something by going with a cheaper model
the TV doesn't get as bright as the more expensive models above
doesn't remove artifacts very well from low-quality content
you can choose to drop your resolution to play games up to 1440p @ 120Hz
which is a great feature for a budget model
The Hisense A7N is the best cheap television overall for bright rooms
meaning it fights glare in rooms with a few lights on
It delivers decent overall picture quality
but lacks advanced features like local dimming
but it's not quite bright enough to make most highlights stand out
and its low-quality content smoothing is quite bad
it has the same good upscaling capabilities as the more expensive Hisense models
This cheap TV even offers gamers low input lag and VRR support
you are limited to a 60Hz refresh rate across all resolutions
The Samsung S95D OLED is the only OLED on the market that uses a matte screen coating
The screen coating does an amazing job of eliminating reflections caused by glare
but it does so at the cost of picture quality in a bright room
making it lose the impact an OLED typically has
Unless you also regularly use your TV in a dark room
where the impact of an OLED is really seen
you're better off getting a TV like the Sony BRAVIA 9 QLED or the Hisense U8/U8N
The Roku Select Series is a good alternative to the Hisense A7N
The Roku gets brighter than the Hisense in SDR
but the Hisense has better reflection handling
so they perform very similarly in bright rooms
Dropped the LG G4 OLED from the Notable Mentions
since the Samsung S95D OLED is the better alternative to the Mini LED models on our list
We also refreshed text throughout the article for clarity and added a custom table at the bottom of the article that sorts TVs based on our new Bright Room usage
We added the Samsung S95D OLED to the Notable Mentions and reviewed the text for accuracy
Our recommendations above are what we think are currently the best TVs for bright rooms for most people in each price range
We factor in the price (a cheaper TV wins over a pricier one if the difference isn't worth it)
and availability (no TVs that are difficult to find or almost out of stock everywhere)
If you would like to do the work of choosing yourself
Be careful not to get too caught up in the details
most TVs are great enough to please almost everyone
and the differences are often not noticeable unless you really look for them
That’s not just a budget line – it’s a major opportunity. Beyond the initial installation cost, solar panels require minimal maintenance and are built to last 30 to 35 years
offering a long-term return on investment that can generate savings for decades.
These savings can be redirected toward educational priorities such as hiring staff
This is a common issue among climate initiatives: promising beginnings that fall short when it comes to long-term support and equitable access
While partial funding is a significant step
Solar use in K-12 schools has tripled over the past decade in Pennsylvania, yet as of 2024, still less than 2% of schools generate and use their own solar power – a strikingly low figure that lags well behind the national average of 11%
In Solar for Schools’ first application round, demand far exceeded expectations with 88 schools from 25 counties applying for $88 million in funding, despite only $25 million being available
This overwhelming response highlights the clear and growing interest among educational institutions to transition to clean energy
yet the limited availability of resources may leave many without support.
Without a corresponding increase in investment
the enthusiasm driving this initiative risks turning into frustration
particularly for schools that have already begun planning for a solar future
a figure that fell far short of early projections and the overwhelming demand from schools
However, in March 2025 Rep
Fiedler mentioned the possibility of an additional $25 million being added to Solar for Schools in Governor Shapiro’s next budget
It is expected that the grant recommendations will be released in May
and schools are already envisioning what they can do with the potential funding
the conversation is shifting toward what’s at stake
and what solar could make possible beyond the installations themselves
Carlisle is pursuing a solar project for a second school
While they’ve already seen the financial payoff from Bellaire Elementary’s success
their motivation goes deeper than just cost savings
expanding solar is part of a broader commitment to sustainability
As important as the revenue and cost savings are to the district
even more powerful to me is that we are teaching our children about the importance of saving energy and being good stewards for the environment
That educational impact is already coming to life
Colleen Friend shared that the district’s Program Supervisor for Science is especially excited to integrate the solar array into Pennsylvania’s new Science
Environmental Literacy and Sustainability standards.
Similarly, students are also excited about a renewable future. A memorable example involved eighth grade students taking part in a “Shark Tank”-inspired project
where they presented innovative ideas to school administrators on how to improve energy efficiency in their own school buildings
Friend also explains that “This would be a win at every angle you look at it.” In addition to the educational and environmental benefits
expanding solar in schools brings broader community advantages: reducing strain on local energy grids
and demonstrating how schools can lead by example in addressing climate challenges
But to turn early progress into lasting impact
and continued public attention will be essential to ensure that clean energy has a sustainable and equitable foundation
is a powerful reminder that the shift to clean energy isn’t just about infrastructure
they’re planting the seeds of climate action in the minds of young people

plays on several soccer teams including a travel club in Westchester
and spends time with her family and friends
But as she and her mom filed into the Ambassador Theatre in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday night
she had one thing on her mind: seeing her idol
“I love Midge because she’s awesome!” Chloe said from her fifth-row seat
several could be spotted wearing Purce jerseys or other Gotham FC merch
As the curtain came up and the 29-year-old walked out to deliver the opening monologue
it was clear that Sports Illustrated Stadium was making its presence known on The Great White Way
“I’ve been to Broadway shows and I’ve been to Gotham games
and it was fun to see the two worlds collide,” says Purce’s former teammate Nicole Baxter
who was also in attendance on Thursday night
“The more you can get Gotham collaborating with the New York City staples of entertainment and business
the more people in this area are going to start to recognize not only Gotham
but the people and personalities of the players.”
it had been a long time since they’d seen a Broadway show
and for many of the patrons seeing Chicago
they had never heard of Gotham or Purce before Thursday night
“I think tonight some Broadway fans may have become Midge and Gotham fans

someone that I really look up to and a player that when I came to Gotham I really wanted to meet—of course I had to see her in her first Broadway show!” Silva said
she’s an outstanding player and off the pitch she’s an incredible human being.”
she certainly had the stage presence needed for the Broadway stage
Purce was joined by actors Tia Altinay and Rachel Schur for a talkback hosted by CBS Sports analyst Darian Jenkins
Nine-year-old Chloe made her way down to the front row
“I was struck by how calm she was,” said one of the company members
“I’ve been subbed on in the first half for the national team,” Purce replied with a laugh
The trio spoke in depth about the crossovers between the training and athleticism necessary for professional athletes and actors
there were plenty of similarities to be found between the two industries
“Seeing the intersection between the athletes and actors
how they have to maintain their bodies is such a parallel,” Jenkins says.“I know this personally and so does Midge
how much more you have to take care of your body to perform day in and day out.”
With Gotham FC’s profile continuing to grow in the women’s soccer landscape
the New Jersey-located team has been working hard to bring the club into the daily lives of their friends across the Hudson River
The team has recently partnered with several bars and restaurants across the city including Legends NYC in Manhattan and Crystal Lake in Williamsburg to make sure fans can always find places to watch the games
Having Purce make her Broadway debut provided the team with a unique way to bring the team to a group of people who may be unfamiliar with the fact that a championship-winning women’s soccer team plays just a few miles away
“I love that this is so unique to New York and Gotham,” Jenkins says
“It makes complete sense that the people who love Broadway would also love a show on the field.”
Purce signed a one-year deal with Gotham FC for the 2025 season

including those from the club’s longtime supporters group Cloud 9
crowded around the stage door following the talkback eager to get a photo with Purce to commemorate her one-night stint on stage

Schools of Art and American Crafts director
places an array of flower petals in molds before molten iron from a student-built furnace is blended with the flowers
One by one, Elizabeth Kronfield adds petals from roses
and hydrangeas into large molds patterned in a large
onlookers are invited to assist with the petal-peeling process to fill the molds.
“It was quiet, subtle, and moving,” said Kronfield, director of RIT’s Schools of Art and American Crafts
and author of the hot iron performance titled Prelude to Hope
“Many of us cried silently while working with the flowers.”
Not far away, scrap iron melted at 3,000 degrees in an RIT student-made cupola furnace is poured into lotus flower-shaped molds. Kelly Wilton
instructional support specialist in the College of Art and Design
leads the merging of the hot-iron flowers — in their orange-red glowing glory — with the real flowers
eliciting a stimulating experience of vibrant light
and floral aroma as the petals press against the hot iron.
The performance progressed from visualizing the hopeful feeling of new creation to what Kronfield describes as “hope burns.”
“That part of the performance symbolized the need for sacrifice to create something new
and literally ‘hope burns,’” Kronfield said.
“Prelude to Hope,” performed under a dusk-turned-dark southern sky, closed the 2025 National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices (NCCCIAP)
The conference was held in early April at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Birmingham
current undergraduate and graduate students
RIT was present in every corner of the conference.
into molds during Kronfield's closing performance at NCCCIAP
Kronfield wrote her performance with Shanti Thakur
director of the School of Film and Animation
NCCCIAP’s juried exhibitions heavily featured work by students and alumni, including Parker Dubiel ’25 (studio arts BFA - sculpture and expanded forms option), Matt Mroz (fine arts studio MFA), Caleb Sykora-Bodie ’26 MFA (ceramics)
Students from RIT’s School of Art and School for American Crafts won the “Oscar” award in the Student Cupola competition
which challenges participating institutions to build a melting device capable of melting casting iron in a foundry setting
They earned the honor for building a highly-functioning furnace.
Wilton mentored the students in the fall and spring semesters on building and running a furnace
“I wanted the students to be able to walk away with the knowledge on how to build and run a furnace with things they could easily find themselves if they wished to continue casting and build a cupola for their own studio practice,” Wilton said
“You can easily get lost in the aesthetics of your build
forgetting that the most important part is that it runs well.”
The cupola creators, from the ceramics MFA and studio arts BFA programs (furniture design, metals and jewelry design
The RIT creators of "Dolly," their NCCCIAP award-winning cupola furnace
The students took Wilton’s Foundry Practices class and collectivelty built the steel structure outside of their coursework. The affectionately named Dolly measured in at 3 feet wide and 6 1/2 feet tall.
“Each student utilized their strengths in building the cupola together,” Wilton said
“Sculpture and metals had more practice in welding and creating the steel structure
while furniture and ceramics had skills in precision and creating armatures for the refectory casting process
Everyone naturally fell into a role that they had the most passion for.”
Wilton competed in the same NCCCIAP cupola competition when she was an RIT graduate student
The experience ushered in a connection with the “wonderful” iron-casting community that has only grown stronger
she hopes another generation of artists is similarly impacted
“These moments develop you into a reliable and hard-working artist,” Wilton said
It also instantly gives these students good reputations if they decide to pursue master’s degrees or jobs at other universities that attend
It essentially acts as an in-person interview by showcasing their skills as a team.”
Wilton said as a direct result of connections made and the cupola work at the conference, Handley was awarded a prestigious Metals Arts fall internship at Rivers of Steel
a historic blast furnace complex in Pittsburgh
is set to help with iron-casting workshops and the organization's annual Festival of Combustion
while also receiving a stipend to make original work.
Dan Hughes, lecturer of photographic sciences
photographed the “Prelude to Hope” performance as well as the cupola running in the student competition
Kronfield credits Hughes’ documentation as original artwork that displayed the “beauty and fierceness of molten iron.”
Hughes also scouted the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark as a possible future RIT Big Shot location
As flower-shaped molds filled with molten iron joined real flower petals during the "Prelude to Hope" performance
it filled the air with vibrant light and pleasant floral smells

As the names and scholarships flashed across the screen
two words kept drawing my attention: Bright Flight
That’s the name of the Missouri higher education scholarship my daughter and other Lafayette High School seniors earned
It was senior awards night in the high school gymnasium
and students finishing their K-12 education were being honored for various accomplishments
This is an occupational hazard that often annoys my wife
We’ll be at an event and my attention will seem to shift elsewhere
with my face glazed over as I ponder an idea that popped into my head
She’ll poke me and ask: “You’re writing a column
he was a Democratic state representative from Columbia
University leaders were worried about a trend: many of the highest-performing high school students in Missouri were heading out of state for college
The “Bright Flight” scholarship was created to counter that trend
it awarded up to $2,000 to the top 3% of Missouri graduating seniors
about two-thirds of the state’s highest-performing students left Missouri for college
the first year the Bright Flight scholarships were awarded
62% of those students chose to stay in the state
But back then, tuition at any of the in-state public schools in Missouri was less than $2,000
The scholarship covered the full cost of tuition
state support for higher education in Missouri
as a percentage of the overall state budget
just four years after the Bright Flight bill was passed
the University of Missouri-Columbia received 70% of its funding from the state
tuition made up 62% of the university’s revenue; state funding was only 30%
This isn’t just a Missouri problem. Nationally, the “student share” of the cost of higher education doubled from 20% to 40% between 1980 and 2023. Unfortunately, Missouri’s historically poor per-capita support for higher education — between 47th and 49th in the nation
depending on who’s doing the counting — makes the problem worse than in other states
What that means in practice is that all of Missouri’s scholarship programs
those for academics and those for financial need
don’t produce nearly as much bang for the buck as they used to
Access Missouri and the A+ program all suffer from underfunding
meaning the promises made when the Missouri Legislature created those programs are no longer fulfilled
A year ago, Fred Hall, a former curator at Mizzou, called me to lament the situation
“Government should be the great equalizer by giving those with fewer resources equal opportunity,” Hall said
low funding with higher tuition means a denial to those who currently have dreams but no means.”
the Republicans who control the General Assembly seem to celebrate minor bumps in higher education funding while also talking about further diminishing the state’s tax base
so that there will never be an opportunity to reverse Missouri’s race to the bottom
A Bright Flight scholarship that once covered full tuition at a state university now offers up to $1,000 for students like my daughter
which is less than 10% of the yearly tuition at a state institution
Mizzou now costs more than $14,000 a year for a full-time student (not including housing expenses) — while the state’s scholarship program is stuck in 1986
It’s no wonder that student debt in the past two decades has more than doubled, with parents and students owing more than $1.6 trillion because loans are the only way many people can fund higher education
As I sat in the gymnasium applauding the accomplishments of my daughter and her friends
many of whom will attend college out of state
I took a break from the parental pride to lament Missouri’s new reality
Bright Flight has become just two words on a screen rather than a promise made from one generation to the next

DETROIT -- Cade Cunningham couldn't shake the immediate feeling of "disappointment" after Thursday night's series-ending Game 6 playoff loss to the New York Knicks
But after enduring a 14-68 season in 2023-24, the Detroit Pistons star
found solace after completing a 44-win turnaround
"We felt good about this series," said Cunningham
8 assists and 7 rebounds in a 116-113 loss
but that feeling will stick with us throughout the summer in our workouts
He then blew a kiss to quiet the merciless crowd at Little Caesars Arena
Thompson said he would learn from the experience
"And I told him straight to his face after the series
In the second quarter, the Pistons trailed by as many as 15 points before clawing back to take a 61-59 halftime lead after a 3-point buzzer-beater by Malik Beasley
the Pistons turned an 11-point deficit into a seven-point edge with a 20-2 run but couldn't close out the Knicks
who responded with an 11-1 run to close the game
The Pistons now have lost 10 straight home playoff games
the longest streak in NBA postseason history
But they said there was a lot to take away from their first playoff series since 2018-19
we continued to fight for each other and have each other's back and we lived with the results
but I think we gave ourselves a chance every game and we just didn't pull through."
Bickerstaff said he felt being part of this group gave him a "renewed sense of purpose in this profession" as he watched it revitalize the fanbase
"You don't get playoff experience until you get playoff experience
but I thought the guys did a tremendous job of learning from moment to moment
game to game and trying to figure out how you can have an impact on winning."
Cunningham put together an impressive playoff debut. He joined Luka Doncic (2020) and Oscar Robertson (1962) as the only players to average 25 points
8 rebounds and 8 assists in their first playoff series in NBA history
He said he was most proud of the jump he made in leading the team as a facilitator and teammate
"We proved to ourselves that what we have in the room works and can be very successful in the NBA," he said
we proved that to the rest of the league as well that when they come play Detroit
it's going to be a dogfight and you're going to have to come play the whole 48 and if you get up early on
we're going to find our way back into the game and give ourselves a shot to win every night
So I think that's the thing that the whole league has taken notice
and just the belief in the locker room has grown a ton."
Pistons owner Tom Gores held an impromptu news conference ahead of Game 6
and while he said he anticipated this season's team would do well
he acknowledged he didn't think it would do this well
the future looks bright in Detroit with a strong foundation intact
"How they've been able to get through adversity is so impressive
I've done everything I could for this city
I've never got the city that excited before this team showed up and they're just showing it on the floor
"I'm sure a lot of people still are not going to predict us to get anywhere
The anticipation in São Paulo reached a fever pitch Saturday when the adult black belts finally took the mats at the 2025 IBJJF Brasileiros and they delivered with awesome action all day long.

May 4 with four athletes still vying for double gold and tons of elite matchups to look forward to
it was the land of the giants with athletes from heaviest weights navigating their way to the finals.
Erich Munis will take on Marcus Ribeiro in a rematch from the 2024 Crown finals (which Munis won by submission) and Gabi Pessanha faces Yara Soares in another rematch between the two.
Munis and Pessanha carry all submissions into day two.
Meyram Alves was also a huge factor in the men's open
making it all the way to the quarters before falling to Marcus
he then had to withdraw from the feather bracket as well.
Yara Soares picked up two big wins to make the open and heavy finals
beating world champion Melissa Cueto in close bouts.
again faced Tayane Porfirio after their controversial match last week at BJJ Stars 15
no controversy as Gabi picked up the clean submission win
The women's finals are set and we have another stacked round of action for everyone when those matches get going tomorrow.
The European and Pan finals were all incredible this season so don't miss it
submitting her way into two more major finals and looks like her generally unstoppable self
Mayssa spent about 45 seconds on the mat on her way to the finals today
She's got Atos's Thaís Loureiro tomorrow and continues to prove why she's probably already the best women's rooster ever
she was upset at Pans so Thaís certainly has something to build off of
Cassia Moura has a chance to win her first gi major title
as the 19 year old phenom beat Maria Luiza in a rematch of their controversial Pans final
Cassia will face world medalist Margot Ciccarelli tomorrow - whoever wins that match is the likely favorite for the Pyramid (considering Ana and Tata won't be there this year)
The top two women's lightweights in the world will meet again tomorrow when Brianna Ste-Marie takes on Janaina Maia
They met at the Crown last year with BSM winning in an impressive show but Maia has looked better than ever this year and is undefeated in 2025
Back to back one seeds fell at middle and medium-heavy when Rebeca Lima beat Thalyta Lima and Giovanna Carniero beat Ingridd Alves.
Rebeca Lima will face Lis Clay in the finals after Elisabeth beat Vitoria Vieira and then Gisele Tavares back-to-back
She was really excited after beating Tavares in a rematch from Pans and a gold medal would cap off this comeback weekend for Clay
The finals will be (rankings according to FloGrappling's official rankings):
By and large the men's divisions (which only went up to the quarters) were a lot of the biggest names getting in an early match and often winning in impressive submission.
There were several key upsets in the early rounds of men's action
The men's quarters are set tomorrow and feature a lot of critical bouts.

Young leaders show that Bay County's future is bright | LetterPanama City News HeraldOur Future Is Bright
One of the things I love most about my role at the Bay County Chamber of Commerce is that it's always fun
it also gives me the gift of real inspiration — and this week was one of those special moments
we had the privilege of celebrating an exceptional group of high school students as they graduated from our eight-month Junior Leadership Bay Program
confidence and heart were nothing short of inspiring
and they left me with an overwhelming sense of hope
These students are more than just impressive — they are the leaders of tomorrow
I can say with confidence that our future is in good hands
I was equally moved by the support system surrounding these students
Success never happens in isolation — it's shaped by the encouragement of families
and a community that invests in them and believes in their potential
This "village" stood behind them every step of the way
we had the honor of hearing powerful words from Bay District Schools Superintendent Mark McQueen and Dr
associate dean of student & strategic initiatives at Florida State University
They spoke about what it truly means to lead and the responsibility that leadership carries
were listening just as closely as the students
One of the most moving moments of the night came when we awarded scholarship funds to a remarkable young woman
These scholarships will help her take her next steps toward Gulf Coast State College and Florida State University Panama City
What made this moment so unforgettable was the reaction from her classmates
The room filled with cheers and heartfelt applause
Angie isn't just a dedicated student — she's also a teen mom to a beautiful 3-year-old daughter
Her classmates understood that this journey wasn't just about leadership or personal growth
it was about creating a better future — not only for herself but for her child
She's faced every challenge with resilience and grace
Her strength and determination have been nothing short of inspiring to everyone who's had the privilege to meet her
I'm reminded that we set out to achieve clear goals with this program — and we did
But what stands out even more is the deeper lesson that emerged: true leadership isn't just about the path you carve for yourself
it's about lifting others up along the way — respecting
That's the kind of graduation gift that stays with you
and it was the perfect reminder of why our future truly is bright

Heaney’s career with the Pirates couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start
Up until the Pirates returned home for six games with the Chicago Cubs followed by the San Diego Padres
Heaney was 2-1 with a remarkable 1.72 ERA through his first six starts of the year
Opponents hit just .165 against him with a .479 OPS while the left-hander struck out 31 batters in 31.1 innings
He was particularly sharp against the New York Yankees on Apr
In back-to-back starts agaisnt the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Angels
But in his first start of the homestand against the Cubs on Tuesday night
Heaney saw a career-high 19.1-consecutive scoreless innings streak come to an end when he allowed four runs in 4.2 innings in a 9-0 loss
In the Pirates’ 4-0 loss to the Padres on Sunday afternoon
“Just nibbling and then not making pitches when I needed to,” Heaney simply stated on what went wrong
Heaney retired the first two batters he faced before four-straight reached with two outs and the Padres took a 1-0 lead in the first
The following inning, Heaney allowed a home run to former Pirates catcher Elias Díaz and two more on a double from Xander Bogaerts
The Padres knocked Heaney around for eight hits and four runs in 3.2 innings
struck out three and threw 100 pitches before manager Derek Shelton went to the bullpen
“It looked like he wasn’t missing by much,” said Shelton
and (the Padres) did not expand the zone.”
Heaney has allowed two more runs over his last two starts than he did through his first five outings of the season
His season ERA has jumped from 1.72 to 3.18
While his overall numbers are still strong
Heaney will try and get back to where he was before his two most recent starts
Sunday’s loss capped off a 1-5 homestand and has them at 12-23 on the year
Only the Colorado Rockies (6-27) and Chicago White Sox (9-24) have worse records a the conclusion of play
Getting the season back on track feels like an impossible task given what the Pirates have done so far
the upcoming schedule won’t make things any easier
Eight of the Pirates’ next 10 series are against teams with a winning record
The two sub-.500 opponents are an upcoming three-game series in St
Louis before returning home for a three-game series back home against the Atlanta Braves
Shelton has said the Pirates need to be more consistent in every area of the game
“That’s something I’m probably gonna think a lot about tonight and have been thinking a lot about
but there has to be some sort of consistency,” said Shelton
“This lineup’s better than this.”
It’s time to show that the team is better than what they’ve shown
it’s going to be a long year of baseball on the North Shore
Some time for step out of struggle have to make changes like the pitchers rotation one lefty after a right hand pitcher or right after left
If Heaney was perfect we still need to score at least 1

The “Whenever” rapper just dropped a handful of 2000s-inspired pics
complete with a candy-colored Louis Vuitton Murakami bag and furry boots
But the centerpiece of these pics isn't the cheery pink Birkin—though that is amazing—it's her hot
Megan is wearing a pink wig so bright and vivid
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from
The last time we saw Megan with pink hair was over the summer, though she opted for a light, dreamy combo of pale pink and lavender. But there's really not a color she doesn't look amazing in, including neon orange; remember the long, fiery shade she paired with a matching Pucci bikini set
Riley Carpenter ’25 was endlessly curious
Between marathons of “How It’s Made” on the Science Channel and J.R.R
Tolkien’s “Silmarillion,” he always had a desire to know how complex things—from industrial machinery to Middle Earth mythologies—worked
Carpenter knew he was interested in pursuing something in the world of STEM
but it wasn’t until his Introduction to Modern Physics class at Santa Clara University that he found his calling: engineering physics—a unique degree in the College of Arts and Sciences that allows students to build their own emphasis
that meant incorporating mechanical engineering
and chemistry to widen the breadth and real-world applications of his physics degree
“Physics has given me the most fundamental view on how things are created and the ability to break everything down to basic principles to reconstruct complicated systems,” he explains
“Because how things work often comes down to the materials being used
getting a wider exposure to these engineering fields has been so useful.”
At Santa Clara, he’s been able to put these diverse skills into practice, working for two years with physics professor Betty Young and her Stanford colleagues at the SLAC National Accelerator Lab on a project designing dark matter sensors on the microscopic level
Carpenter’s already made waves in his field
winning a prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship in 2024 and a National Science Foundation honorable mention in 2025
As he prepares to continue this dark matter research through a Ph.D
This illustration captures the large scale structure of the universe as imagined by dark matter theorists
dark matter acts as the underlying scaffolding that attracts and draws together normal matter

Tell us a bit about your dark matter sensor research with Dr
What makes dark matter so difficult to study
Dark matter gets its name because when it moves through space
dark matter may be detectable through collisions with atoms in a crystal
dark matter interactions are very tiny and usually get dwarfed by other things
so it’s a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack
our experiments work with superconductors cooled down to below the temperature of most outer space
While room temperature is 300 Kelvin and the lowest temperature limit of matter is 0 Kelvin
we have these fridges where we drop things down by another factor of 100 to get to about 40 milli-Kelvin to test our devices
we can minimize the vibrations of molecules
so we might be able to capture the tiny wiggles from dark matter
Being able to confirm dark matter’s existence would be a major step towards refining our understanding of the fundamental physics of the universe
theorists could start narrowing down which of their models are consistent with the dark matter mass range observed in detector data
this research leads to continual improvements in the quality and scalability of low-temperature sensors that have a whole host of potential applications beyond just dark matter searches
how do you design something that can tolerate those unforgiving temperatures while remaining sensitive enough to detect these tiny energy signatures
and you put very thin layers of metal on top
That film will be maybe 1/1000th the thickness of a strand of hair
Then you make a stencil to place over that film to blast away the exposed areas of metal
leaving behind the imprint from the stencil—these metallic patterns become the circuits for our nano-devices
A magnified view of one of Carpenter's circuits using an electron microscope—the device is just several hundred micrometers across
if we see a change in the circuit response
that signal may originate from dark matter
though typically it comes from cosmic rays
which we’ll then use to calibrate our devices
there’s a lot of trial and error in lab research
What was the biggest challenge you faced during this project
I was brought onto a project where the early device yields were not very good
There were a lot of issues with reliability in the production process
and I was able to identify essentially a bug in the process that we were able to turn into a feature
One of the chemicals we’d been using for one step was corrosive to some of our device materials
But then I realized that sometimes there are instances where you want to selectively remove material in a process called wet etching
I was able to design a new procedure to use that chemical to do work for us instead of ruining our devices
Some of the grad students then were able to refine that procedure to produce devices that are now functioning and being tested up at SLAC
you’re also a member of SCU’s Chamber Singers Choir
Can you tell us a little bit about how you’ve been able to pursue your love of music at Santa Clara
and it’s been so rewarding to continue singing at SCU
but I really love the community and the opportunity to produce a unique sound at every performance and rehearsal
I also feel like our director Scot Hanna-Weir also lets us perform impactful pieces that have important messages
One of my favorite performances was a piece called “Breathe in Hope” by Dale Trumbore that we sang my sophomore year
It was this call to action to recognize that there is the possibility of overcoming the challenges and suffering in today’s world
The song ends with the message that we each must work towards bringing about the future that we want to see
SCU really prides itself on providing a holistic
How did coming to Santa Clara benefit your academic pursuits
Santa Clara seemed like a place where I could craft an education directed toward the interests I had
I knew I wouldn’t get thrown into a very generic program where every course you’d take is predetermined
I found that there was a lot of flexibility and personalization in the curriculum which allowed me to also pursue minors in mathematics and classics
One of my favorite classes at SCU was actually Professor Nicholas Lindberg’s course on Greek democracy where we ran a mock Athenian Assembly
and we saw it all fall apart as people became more corrupt
Being able to take a class so vastly different from sitting at a whiteboard all day has been a great part of my Santa Clara education
through that flexibility in my engineering physics degree
I’ve been able to customize my engineering physics major to my interests
gain access to mentors from multiple departments and a lot of one-on-one support
I probably wouldn’t have been able to take as many chemistry courses as I have
Steven Suljak in the chemistry department became a great mentor for me
I actually sing with him in the Chamber Singers Choir on campus
and he was also the Office of Student Fellowships contact for the Goldwater Scholarship and the National Science Foundation fellowship program
so he was a huge help on my applications for those awards and graduate school
Between getting an honorable mention from the National Science Foundation and receiving the Barry Goldwater Scholarship last year
do you have a proudest moment from your time at SCU
I was able to present a lot of my results from the past two summers of work at the American Physical Society Conference for the far west region
Giving that presentation and sharing my research with the broader community was really rewarding for me
was a huge moment of pride in what I had accomplished
I really appreciated that my work was acknowledged and it was great to bring that win back to SCU
Carpenter (right) has held a leadership role in the Society for Physics Students (SPS)
I’m a lot more well-rounded in terms of what I view as valuable to my education
I’ve really grown to appreciate how interconnected science
it is exceedingly valuable to study them all
I took a course on disability for my diversity requirement through the philosophy department
I found it to be a powerful course that gave me a lot of insight into different ways of thinking and the great variety of experiences for so many people
I’ve grown to apply that back even within physics
and better appreciate how important it is to foster a diverse group of individuals in science
because that’s how you can proliferate the most ideas from the most perspectives
Do you have any advice for the incoming class of Broncos
I would reassure them that you don’t need to have things figured out as a freshman
You can come to SCU thinking you’re going to do one thing and realize that your path is very different—this university is a place where you can take a little bit of time that first year to determine what it is you want to pursue
I’d also encourage students to really take advantage of the fact that this university is quite small and very undergraduate-focused and get in touch with their professors
That face time and direct mentorship can be so valuable
but you still have to choose to walk through it

It’s not often you see 10-year veterans make improvements in their game
did as he consistently showed up and played hard for the Sixers this season
There really weren’t many bright spots for the Sixers this season
but Kelly Oubre Jr.’s play was one of them
The 29-year-old wing returned to Philadelphia last offseason on a very reasonable two-year
$16.3 million deal and spent 2024-25 more than living up to it
While the team was constantly riddled with injuries
He started all but three of the 60 games he played until he was ruled out for the last month for recovery/tanking purposes
and made some noticeable improvements in his game
Oubre finished the year averaging 15.1 points
6.1 rebounds and career-highs of 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals
He even upped his true shooting percentage to 55.1 — nothing overly efficient
but still his highest since 2021-22 when he was in Charlotte
considering everything Oubre brings to the table beyond sheer efficiency due to his subpar 29.3 percent three-point shooting
That underwhelming three-point shooting is probably at the top of that list
he does at least shoot with the confidence and volume (4.0 attempts a game) that still commands some attention from defenders
which means he has something to offer as a spacer alongside his teammates
Second is his aggressiveness can lead to him being a bit out of control at times
such as ill-advised pull-ups or erratic passes
Oubre’s athletic aggressiveness is usually something that helps the Sixers
and we’ve seen that more and more over his time in Philly
He’s quick to act and attack when he does get the ball
He can soar to the rim with quick catches and drives past closeouts
make sharp cuts to add more value off the ball
and the touch of extra creation ability he provides out of isolations and pick-and-rolls is another plus alongside the team’s stars (whenever they’re actually available)
In a season that went off the rails so fast and it was clear playing for contention was off the cards surprisingly early
Oubre continued to play hard when others wouldn’t
He has the speed and motor to cover guards plus the size and wingspan to defend forwards
He also upped his rebounding this year to average 6.1 and the third-best rebound percentage of his career at 10.0 percent
Apart from his defense on the ball and increased disruption off it in passing lanes
the way he fought on the glass really helped highlight his energy and mindset overall
There’s little cap space available on the market this coming offseason
so Oubre likely isn’t to receive many offers of much more than the Sixers can pay him if he opts to leave
The issue for Philly at that point would be trying to re-sign all of Oubre
If they use some or all of the non-taxpayer MLE to re-sign Yabusele
it may not be possible to keep all three unless they trade away one of their star players’ salaries
keeping their versatile big in Yabusele and the breakout play of Grimes likely are (and should) be the priority over Oubre
“I am a Philadelphia 76er,” Oubre said in his exit interview this season
“I’m blessed to be a part of this organization
And I feel like I like to finish what I start
Will we see Oubre finish what he set out to do with the Sixers
There’s certainly plenty of value Oubre has left to offer on the court to complement the team’s stars if they can get healthy and back on track for 2025-26
He deserves a lot of credit for showing up in a season when he could’ve easily taken his foot off the gas
Geneseo, N.Y. — Our Bright Spot shines on employees at Coast Professional Inc.
They recently raised more than $11,000 for Make-A-Wish America.
The contribution was the result of a company-wide initiative where employees could donate part of their checks to the cause
The campaign ran through the first quarter of the year and received overwhelming support from all departments
“We’re incredibly proud of our team for coming together to support such a powerful mission,” Coast Professional CEO Jonathan Prince said in a statement
“The Make-A-Wish Foundation creates memorable experiences for children and their families
and we’re honored to contribute to that impact.”
