Arsenal boss Renee Slegers speaking to Sky Sports: "We conceded nine goals in the last two WSL games and we just said as a team we don't think it's acceptable
We need to learn two very tough lessons coming off a big success
We have to find solutions and move forward."
On if today's defeat was more of a shock: "This is not what we are expecting and this is not what we are about
it's not what we expected coming here and it's not what we prepared for
From now on we have to do everything to be better against Manchester United."
On if the Champions League final is a distraction: "It's intense for the players with where we came from and what's ahead of us
I will be working until late tonight and tomorrow we want to try and get the details right and put our finger on what it is and how we want to move forward."
On the importance of the Manchester United game: "We went for it
we knew what we wanted and needed to do to secure second place
We weren't successful but now it's about getting everything right and doing it against Manchester United instead."

Having 75% possession means nothing if you only have one goal from 18 shots
even if the Brighton keeper has been in inspired form
If we're not clinical at this level then we can forget beating Barca with inevitably less chances on goal

It's not good enough all round and we need to take a look at ourselves individually and as a team
"They took their chances really well and we didn't take ours
It just didn't go in today but it just wasn't good enough."
On if the Champions League final is a distraction: "I don't think so
That's in the back of our mind and that is the game we are playing for this season
We could have done that today and we haven't
On importance of Saturday: "A good performance
We need to take our chances end everyone has to be back in the game as we were against Lyon if we want to do well in the Champions League."

Nine goals conceded across those two losses against Villa and Brighton

Brighton shock Arsenal in six-goal thriller
Arsenal suffered a second heavy defeat in the space of a week as Brighton took advantage of defensive mistakes to dent the Gunners' hopes of a second-place finish
Brighton had lost all 13 of their previous Women's Super League games against Arsenal but a Jelena Cankovic double
sandwiched by goals from Fran Kirby and Kiko Seike
Kirby gave Brighton a 16th minute lead with a stunning curled effort from the edge of the box
though the way Beth Mead surrendered possession before Leah Williamson hesitated in closing down Cankovic typified Arsenal's shaky start
Alessia Russo went close to providing the perfect response as her close-range header cannoned back off the post just a minute later
Brighton goalkeeper Baggaley - a late addition to the line up in place of Melina Loeck - became very busy all of a sudden
denying both Frida Maanum and Kim Little from close range in quick succession
The 28-year-old produced a masterful stop when Foord met Caldentey's cross from six yards out
but couldn't prevent the ball falling back to Foord to slam home
Arsenal continued to push as Mariona and Maanum both tested Baggaley from outside the area
but it was the hosts that went into the break in control
A Seagulls corner was headed out to the edge of the box
where Cankovic sent a fizzing first-time volley past a helpless Zinsberger
Arsenal started the second half in the same wobbly way in which they began the first - Nikita Parris reached a long ball before Zinsberger but could only poke it wide
If that was a warning not to overcomplicate things
it was one Renee Slegers' side didn't heed
Zinsberger's attempted ball out to the wing under pressure was easily intercepted and played to an unmarked Cankovic
Not a single defender was in touching distance of the Serbian midfielder as she lobbed the ball over Zinsberger and into the unguarded goal
Arsenal's defending got even worse 90 seconds later - Katie McCabe dropped deep when her defensive colleagues pushed high
allowing Brighton striker Seike to race through on goal and finish expertly past Zinsberger
Caldentey pulled a goal back with a curled effort in injury time
before Jenna Nighswonger hit the crossbar from distance
A second successive defeat leaves Arsenal just a point ahead of third-placed Manchester United going into the final day of the season
while Brighton look set to achieve a club-best fifth place finish
'We need to take a look at ourselves' - Arsenal stalling at wrong time
Brighton had never beaten Arsenal in the Women's Super League
Slegers said her players needed to "neutralise" their emotions after the high of reaching the Champions League final was followed by a shock 5-2 defeat by Aston Villa
While Arsenal looked sharp enough in attack - Baggaley was forced into making 10 saves and could make a claim to be player of the match - in defence they were nothing short of a shambles
Squad rotation could be used as an excuse midweek
but on Monday Slegers fielded the same back four that kept Lyon at bay last weekend
Defeat means the winner will take second place in the WSL when Arsenal host Manchester United on Saturday
we knew what we wanted and needed to do to secure second place," Slegers said after the game
"We weren't successful but now it's about getting everything right and doing it against Manchester United instead."
A second place finish would mean entering the Champions League in the third qualifying round
In 19 days Arsenal will face reigning European champions Barcelona in the Champions League final
Barring a huge goal difference swing on the final day
Brighton will achieve their highest ever finish in the WSL
The afternoon began on a slightly bizarre note - before kick-off Brighton confirmed Poppy Pattinson
Dejana Stefanovic and Pauline Bremer would all be leaving the club this summer
though manager Dario Vidosic was unaware the news had been made public until Sky Sports told him so
goalkeeper Loeck suffered a suspected finger injury
stand-in goalkeeper Baggaley was superb despite being thrown in at the last minute
we had to be resilient together today to have a chance," Vidosic told Sky Sports

We fell to a disappointing defeat in the Barclays Women's Super League
as Brighton & Hove Albion hit four past us at Broadfield Stadium
Caitlin Foord scored her 13th goal of the season to draw us level in the first half and Mariona Caldentey hit a beautiful strike in injury time
but neither proved enough to withstand a courageous Brighton side.
It was an unnerving and breathless first five minutes
as a great fingertip save from Manuela Zinsberger denied Brighton's very first shot
and Caitlin Foord rounded the keeper only to put the ball just wide of the post
Just as we regained our composure and began to threaten the hosts
Frida Maanum and Alessia Russo both saw solid efforts saved by an impressive Sophie Baggaley before the half-hour mark
Kim Little danced her way into the Brighton box with ease
only for her shot to go straight into Baggaley’s hands
The Brighton keeper continued to pull off save after save
but Caitlin Foord finally brought us back on level terms in the 29th minute
Baggaley denied a signature long-range strike from Maanum just before the half-time whistle
Jelena Cankovic unleashed a rocket through a crowded box
and suddenly our Gunners were behind once more
a rapid counter-attack from Kiko Seike was prevented by some good defensive work from Leah Williamson
The Seagulls’ onslaught had only just begun
receiving a surprise scoop over the top and dinking the ball over Zinsberger
we were fishing the ball out of the net once more
A clever cross from Marisa Olisalgers found an onrushing Seike
who fought off Katie McCabe to score with a first-time strike
Renée Slegers then made a quadruple substitution
Jenna Nighswonger and Stina Blackstenius into the fray as we tried to salvage something.
our Gunners fell short at every turn in the second half
Not even a class strike from Mariona Caldentey in the second minute of injury time was enough to pull back a result and the afternoon finished 4-2 to the Seagulls.
This weekend's clash with Manchester United will now decide who finishes second in the Women's Super League standings

Renee Slegers' side have conceded nine goals in just two games to lose back-to-back league games for the first time in two years
despite Renee Slegers returning to a full strength XI for Monday's trip to Brighton
little changed in an incredible 4-2 loss to the Seagulls
It's the first time Arsenal have lost successive league games in the same season for two years and the signs were there in the first few minutes
when Kiko Seike almost broke the deadlock and then Mariona Caldentey nearly passed the ball into the back of her own net
It would be former players of the Gunners' biggest WSL rival
that really haunted them on the south coast
first when Chelsea icon Fran Kirby curled an effort into the top corner in the opening stages
but it only seemed to kick the visitors into gear
Alessia Russo hit the post immediately afterwards
both Kim Little and Frida Maanum were denied from point blank range by the brilliant Sophie Baggaley and then Caitlin Foord finally found the equaliser
getting a second bite of the cherry following a sensational cross from Mariona Caldentey
the problem was that Arsenal continued to be wasteful
free headers sent off target and shots right at the Brighton goalkeeper would be punished by her attacking team-mates
next by another ex-Chelsea player as Jelena Cankovic bagged a brilliant brace either side of half-time
The Seagulls' scoring was then rounded off by the lively Seike
who got her well-earned goal before the hour
It prompted Slegers to make a quadruple sub
hoping to wrestle back some sort of control
but despite Caldentey pulling one back in stoppage time
The Gunners now head into their final game of the season
knowing that defeat would see them slip into third place
That would be far from ideal looking ahead to next term
when the north London outfit would have to enter the Champions League at a much earlier stage - something that has caused several English clubs

Newcastle United escaped the Amex Stadium with a point after Alexander Isak scored a last-gasp penalty in a 1-1 Premier League draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday in a key result for their chase of Champions League qualification
Newcastle are fourth in the table on 63 points with three games remaining, three points ahead of Chelsea and Nottingham Forest who both have a game in hand
Minteh scored against his former team with Brighton's first decent opportunity of the match in the 28th minute when he cut the ball inside to his left foot before unleashing a blistering shot through a crowd into the far corner
It was not supposed to be like this for Mats Wieffer in his first season at Brighton & Hove Albion
One of the key signings last summer has finally got a run in the team as fourth-choice right-back
rather than his regular position in central midfield
Wieffer had an eventful 54 minutes on the pitch in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle at the Amex Stadium
He recovered from a shaky start to provide the assist for Yankuba Minteh’s goal
picked up a booking and was substituted by head coach Fabian Hurzeler to avoid the danger of receiving a red card
The chaotic nature of Wieffer’s contribution was indicative of a campaign that has not gone according to plan for the 25-year-old Dutchman since a £25million ($33.2m) move from Feyenoord last July
Of the nine new signings made in last summer’s transfer window
Wieffer was expected to be a central figure
Technical director David Weir claimed at the time that the club had landed “one of the best deep-lying midfielders in Europe”
but there have been mitigating circumstances
Injury problems have deprived Wieffer of rhythm
He was showing signs of getting into his stride when he scored his first goal for the club at West Ham in December
but a leg injury sustained in that 1-1 draw at the London Stadium ruled him out for two months
Hurzeler spoke about the value of Wieffer’s versatility prior to a 2-2 draw at Manchester City in March
“Mats has a special profile for us,” Hurzeler said
especially when we have a lot of players in our defensive line who are injured with small issues
“He can play as a right- or a left-back and as a (number) six
It’s really helpful to have him back to his best shape and he’s really trying hard to get there and training hard every day to get there
I’m really happy that he’s now in a situation where he can help the team no matter which situation he’s in or which position he’s playing.”
Wieffer has lived up to that billing in recent weeks as a solution to a right-back crisis
Hurzeler lost Joel Veltman — first choice in the position — to a foot injury in mid-February
Veltman’s absence was compounded by natural replacement Tariq Lamptey suffering an ankle injury in March during training
Jack Hinshelwood has deputised at right-back
but the emergence of Wieffer as an option has enabled Hinshelwood to switch back to his role in midfield
where the competition for places is congested
Wieffer has started the last three matches on the right side of Hurzeler’s back four
He had 89 minutes in the 4-2 defeat at Brentford last month — his longest time on the pitch since 90 minutes in a 3-0 win at Everton in the opening game of the season
That was followed by another 90 minutes in the 3-2 win at home to West Ham
Hurzeler’s decision to stick with Wieffer — despite Veltman and Lamptey returning to the bench in the West Ham comeback — threatened to backfire in the first quarter of the contest against Newcastle
as the visitors targeted Brighton’s right flank
Hurzeler’s side nearly fell behind in the 13th minute
the fingertips of Bart Verbruggen foiling Harvey Barnes following confusion between Wieffer and Jan Paul van Hecke
Wieffer gradually warmed to the task of dovetailing with right-winger Minteh
Pursued by Barnes when retrieving possession midway inside the opponent’s half
Wieffer blindsided the Newcastle defence with a clever pass which led to Minteh cutting inside the penalty area to break the deadlock in the 28th minute
A harsh booking four minutes later for a challenge on Barnes left Wieffer walking a tightrope which became glaringly precarious when referee Craig Pawson penalised him for a foul on Sandro Tonali in the 51st minute (pictured top)
but Hurzeler took a sensible course of action by bringing on Lamptey for Wieffer three minutes later
Or at least it seemed sensible at the time
until Lamptey’s first contribution was to clip Newcastle substitute Anthony Gordon
but he revised the decision after VAR Andy Madley sent him to the monitor as the initial contact took place outside the box
Veltman came on at right-back for the final quarter of the game
with Lamptey pushed forward to right-wing and Minteh switched to the left
The confused picture leaves Hurzeler with a decision to make at right-back for the penultimate away game at Wolves on Saturday in 10th-placed Brighton’s bid to finish eighth
which will probably be enough to qualify for the Europa Conference League
Speaking to The Athletic about Wieffer’s display
He is proving it more and more that he is a great option in this position
“I think the yellow card wasn’t a yellow card
the second foul (on Tonali) wasn’t a second yellow card
but unfortunately the referee gave the first yellow card and then we had to protect him.”

Leicester and Ipswich have earned less than West Ham’s 13 points in 14 games
The thing those three clubs have in common: they have been relegated
In theory, West Ham’s trip to Brighton offered a chance for redemption as Potter returned to the club where he enjoyed three and a half seasons
And there was no better time to play them with Fabian Hürzeler’s side winless in five league games
two different stats were a sign of what was to come: Brighton had conceded at least two goals in each game of that winless run and West Ham were without a comeback win all season
A 3-2 Brighton victory should have been no surprise really
Of course I’m going to be upset … If you want me to swear
Brighton dominated possession in the first half and Hürzeler’s side looked much more threatening than Potter’s team
View image in fullscreenKaoru Mitoma heads home Brighton’s equaliser against West Ham
Photograph: Maja Smiejkowska/ReutersBrighton’s pressing and probing paid off in the 13th minute when Yasin Ayari curled a stunning strike into the top right corner from the edge of the box
who often found himself in space on the left
played the ball infield to Brajan Gruda who teed up Ayari for the finish
Adingra found himself involved in the action again when his goal was ruled out for offside after a fantastic double save from Alphonse Areola
The Ivorian winger tapped in from six yards out but as soon as he started to celebrate
the flag went up to signal that Mats Wieffer had strayed offside in the buildup
Tomas Soucek had a couple of chances in the first half
the first of which hit the side netting from a tight angle after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s pass
His second opportunity was even better: a towering header tipped on to the crossbar by Bart Verbruggen
Still it was not enough from Potter’s side
What West Ham lacked in finesse was made up for in away support
Perhaps relenting to pressure from the crowd
Yet, the attack seemed to be the only thing going for West Ham as Potter delayed making another change. Against the run of play, Bowen curled in a perfect cross for Soucek, who had the simple task of heading past the keeper from four yards out.
Potter was seven minutes away from the biggest victory of his West Ham career but his former club did not get the memo. With the clock ticking down, Brighton launched the ball into the box. Gruda headed the ball across to Kaoru Mitoma who headed in the equaliser with two minutes to go. The stadium erupted.
Then, just when you thought it could not get any louder, Carlos Baleba decided to rival Ayari and curl in a winner from the edge of the box. Delight for Hürzeler and despair for Potter.
BBC Sport football news reporter at Selhurst ParkPublished5 April 2025It was a game that
had little riding on it - but try telling Crystal Palace and Brighton that
Three red cards - two for the Eagles, one for the Seagulls - and wild celebrations from the hosts following a dramatic 2-1 win showed that it wasn't 'just another game' to the teams involved
Supporters of other sides often poke fun at the fixture because of the 45-mile distance between the clubs
but it's a dislike that has been building since the 1970s
You won't find anyone from either club referring to it as the 'M23 derby' - as it is so often called in some quarters - but this was the latest chapter in a serious rivalry
Palace went in front through Jean-Philippe Mateta in just the third minute when the striker
who has built cult hero status with supporters thanks to his goals and corner-kicking celebration
Danny Welbeck equalised with a goal that made him Brighton's all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League
before wing-back Daniel Munoz scored what proved to be the winner
Eddie Nketiah has had a mixed time at Crystal Palace since his move from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £30m
The one-time England international was brought on in the 68th minute here - only to be sent off 10 minutes later
His first booking was for simulation when he went to ground in the penalty area after a challenge from Pervis Estupinan
and then he received a second yellow for a high foot on Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke
The game looked like it was unravelling for the Eagles when Marc Guehi was sent off for a late challenge
leaving Palace with the prospect of playing a lengthy stint of added time - 12 minutes were signalled
The red cards did not stop there and Van Hecke received one when he brought down Daichi Kamada six minutes into injury time
It's a rivalry that might not leap to mind first for every football fan
But a rivalry is exactly what Palace and Brighton have
It all started when the two teams played each other five times in 1976
Crystal Palace were managed by Terry Venables and Brighton were led by Alan Mullery
The two had been team-mates at Tottenham Hotspur but were never close
This was in the days before penalty shootouts were an option to decide FA Cup ties
And the teams involved kept on replaying until there was a winner
Crystal Palace beat Brighton 1-0 in the third game
Brighton boss Mullery says he had a pot of boiling hot coffee poured on him by Palace fans
"So I pulled a handful of change out of my pocket
Crystal Palace,'" he told the Guardian - and since then the two clubs have never got on
Brighton used to be known as the Dolphins but changed their nickname to the Seagulls and Palace fans argue it was done to be similar to their nickname
Palace have been in the Premier League since 2013 - thanks to goals from club icon Wilfried Zaha
they beat Brighton in the Championship play-off semi-final on their way to sealing promotion at Wembley
That game also had its own issues, though, as on entering their dressing room before the match, the Palace team found excrement on the floor.
the teams meet more regularly - with a number of tight recent encounters
Before Saturday's incident-packed game
the five previous matches at Selhurst Park had ended 1-1
Palace won a game that will live long in the memory - completing their first league double over Brighton since the 1932-33 season
'This win was for our fans' - Glasner after Palace seal victory with nine men
Crystal Palace boss Glasner on his feelings after the game: "It's a massive win but I'm really exhausted because there was so much going on and [because of] this atmosphere in the stadium
"The fighting spirit of the team and the togetherness with our fans
you have to experience and that is great to get this experience and be part of it
I'm really happy to lay on my sofa and just do nothing today."
On joining in with crowd chants: "I could see how the players were fighting together in many situations
such quick players and I felt that they need all the support we can give
I needed something to do with my arms as I couldn't keep them in my pockets
it's a really fantastic win today."
On feeling like stoppage time would never end: "We defended with a lot of passion
with a lot of heart but always waiting for this moment to go forward
"Like when JP [Mateta] and Maxence [Lacroix] celebrated on the pitch but it was still not over because we thought maybe we would play until sunset
It is the character of this group and the character of these players."
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler on how the game played out: "Very emotional game
Difficult to get a rhythm into this game especially in the second half
"That was a little bit to our disadvantage
We weren't able to control the game like in the first half because of everything
The emotional final part of the game didn't help us to control it
Of course to have these emotions inside of you but in the right moments and at the right timing
It didn't help us to get the rhythm back and that is something we have to learn."
Brighton didn't win personal duels - Hurzeler

Image source, ReutersImage caption, Alexander Isak has scored 23 goals in the Premier League this season
Alexander Isak earned a draw for Newcastle with a late penalty against Brighton at Amex Stadium.
Brighton were on course for a narrow win as they led through Yankuba Minteh with stoppage time approaching.
Newcastle had been awarded two penalties that were overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR) before being handed a third when Yasin Ayari used his arm to block Fabian Schar's free-kick.
After a lengthy review, the on-field decision stood and Isak coolly converted to take his tally in the league to 23 goals for the season.
A draw was fully deserved for Newcastle as they pushed and probed throughout the encounter on the south coast.
Brighton mustered just three further shots after breaking the deadlock in the 28th minute as they struggled to find any rhythm.
They did have a shout for a penalty of their own when Matt O'Riley appeared to have been caught by Sandro Tonali, but referee Craig Pawson waved away the appeals.
Newcastle substitute Callum Wilson went close to snatching all three points in stoppage time when he forced Bart Verbruggen to make a fine save.
The draw does no great favours to either side in their respective challenges for Europe, with Brighton staying 10th and Newcastle remaining fourth.
Premier League: Brentford put four past Man Utd, Isak earns Newcastle draw
Proud of Seagulls but have to focus on next match - Hurzeler
Brighton felt euphoric last weekend after two late goals saw them come from behind to pick up a much-needed 3-2 victory against West Ham - ending a five-game winless streak.
However, they did not appear to carry confidence from that result into this encounter and got a taste of their own medicine with Isak's late penalty denying them all three points.
Minteh earlier showed great composure in a crowded box to craft space and curl cutely into the far corner to score for the sixth time this campaign, but it was against the run of play.
The Gambia forward joined Brighton from Newcastle in a £30m deal last summer - after not making a single appearance for the Magpies.
He was happy to celebrate in front of the travelling fans - pointing at his badge and then the floor.
It took Brighton another 52 minutes to have their next shot as they were penned back by a Newcastle side desperate to take something from the game.
Home boss Fabian Hurzeler turned to his bench but could not find the right formula to get Brighton up the field and eventually the pressure told.
With three difficult remaining fixtures to come against Wolves, Liverpool and Tottenham, Brighton's hopes of qualifying for Europe are starting to look slim.
Magpies not at clinical best in front of goal - Howe
When a second on-field penalty decision was overturned with the help of VAR, Eddie Howe must have been thinking this was not going to be Newcastle's day.
Both interventions from the VAR were correct, though, with the first incident rightly chalked off due to Tariq Lamptey's foul on Anthony Gordon having happened outside the 18-yard box, while the second saw Joe Willock awarded a yellow card for diving.
It was third time lucky for the Carabao Cup winners, albeit after a lengthy VAR review, when Ayari clearly moved his arm towards the ball as Schar's free-kick was heading towards goal.
Isak is exactly the man you want over a high-pressure penalty in the last minute and he did not miss a beat as he sent Verbruggen the wrong way.
The Sweden striker has scored the most goals by a Newcastle player in a Premier League season since club legend Alan Shearer also hit 23 in 2001-02.
Brighton could have had no qualms had Newcastle snatched all three points when Wilson unleashed a powerful shot in the sixth minute of additional time.
The draw will leave Newcastle - who had won six of their past seven league outings - with mixed feelings, knowing that victory could have propelled them up to third but a loss would have left them with a huge target on their back.
Newcastle face Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton in their final three games as they look to hold on to a top five spot, which would secure a return to the Champions League.

1-0 in the reverse Premier League fixture and 2-1 in the FA Cup fifth round
The last side they won three games against in a single campaign were Wycombe Wanderers in 2009-10
while they have never beaten an opponent three times in a season as a top-flight side
Brighton are one of two sides in the Premier League this season who’ve both scored and conceded 55+ goals (56 for

Newcastle United have won 19 Premier League matches this season and are looking to win 20 in a season for the first time since 2002-03 under Sir Bobby Robson (21)
Eddie Howe would also become the first English manager since Frank Lampard with Chelsea in 2019-20 to win 20 Premier League games in a season
no side has won more Premier League matches than Newcastle United (P19 W14 D0 L5)
while champions Liverpool are the only teams to score more goals in that time (51) than the Magpies have (46)
Brighton and Hove Albion have won four Premier League matches when they’ve trailed this season
their most ever in a single campaign in the competition
while the 17 points they’ve gained from losing positions is also their most in a season
Newcastle United have won 27 Premier League matches by a margin of three or more goals
the only side with more is Manchester City (38)
while Howe has the most of these wins in Premier League history among Englishmen (38 – also 11 with Bournemouth)
two more than the next best (Harry Redknapp
Alexander Isak has scored 22 Premier League goals this season
the most by a Newcastle player since Alan Shearer in 2003-04 (22)
while Shearer was the last player with more (23 in 2001-02)
Brighton are the only side he’s faced more than once without scoring against
Kaoru Mitoma has scored in each of his last two Premier League appearances for Brighton

Fourth official has announced 9 minutes of added time
Renée Slegers has given her assessment of another tough loss as we draw closer to the end of the Barclays Women's Super League season
of course," said our head coach after the full-time whistle. "They got a chance early in the game
and I think that somehow gave them belief. But then there are three or four goals that are turnovers
We really need to do better on the ball and be better positioned. That's a collective responsibility.
why it happened today is the million-dollar question
I will analyse tonight; the players and staff will analyse tonight. Tomorrow
we want to get some answers and move forward
because we have two very important games ahead of us."
our next is a battle for second place at Emirates Stadium against Manchester United
The belief is still there in the same amount. That's important
but we don't want to put ourselves in this situation. These are big
We know how important the next two games will be for us."
Over 40,000 supporters are expected in N5 for the WSL season finale and Renée believes that support will give us an edge on Saturday.
we want to deliver for them and we know how important it is for them as well. We really want to put it right
We'll do better on Saturday against Man United."

Brighton and Hove Albion ran out 4-2 winners over Arsenal to stay fifth in the Women’s Super League table heading into the final weekend
Brighton dealt a blow to Arsenal at the Broadfield Stadium on Monday afternoon

Renée Slegers approached the fixture with a full-strength selection
opting for six changes following Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat away at Aston Villa
Dario Vidošić’s side announced that five players are set to depart the club
and Pauline Bremer are will take their leave from the Seagulls

fifth-place Brighton were hungry for three points in front of their vocal home support
as they looked to capitalise on a clumsy Gunners backline
Fran Kirby opened the scoring for the hosts in the 16th minute
firing a world-class finish into the top right corner and far beyond the reach of Manuela Zinsberger
The equaliser for Arsenal arrived through Caitlin Foord
after Sophie Baggaley saved her initial attempt and she slotted home the rebound
Albion were back in front before half-time through another wonder goal
A well-delivered corner was initially cleared by the Gunners’ defence
but Cancovic was on the edge of the box ready to pounce
volleying from the edge of the box straight toward the back of Zinsberger’s net
Brighton commenced the second half in spectacular fashion
scoring two goals in just a couple of minutes to double their lead over Arsenal.
The first was provided by Cancovic from the edge of the penalty area in the 53rd minute
Her left-footed superb strike flew past a stunned Zinsberger following some impressive buildup play from Brighton.
Kiko Seike then chipped the slightly shaken goalkeeper after picking up a great ball from behind
as Arsenal failed to deal with the Seagulls’ ‘attack from the back’ approach.
Mariona Caldentey scored what would only be a second consolation goal for Arsenal during injury time
Her curling effort made its way past Baggaley
The dying moments of the clash were scrappy
as Arsenal finally came to life but had done far too little far too late to overturn the deficit.
The Gunners must now fight for second place against Manchester United at the Emirates next weekend
while Brighton are on the brink of celebrating their highest ever WSL finish
and an inaugural victory over Arsenal in the competition
who made countless saves of the highest calibre for Albion

The Arsenal head coach said: “They did well
normally when we perform to our level we can beat this
I’m not saying that to be arrogant but that is what we have been doing before
What I would say about Brighton is they did it with a lot of aggression
belief and they were fearless and they worked really hard in the duels and they made it hard for us
they used all the tools to get us out of the game and the quality of their finishing was extremely high today.”
Slegers then reflected upon a missed opportunity to avoid the dreaded Champions League qualifying process faced by the WSL’s third-place finisher
and winning today would have secured second place — we spoke about it and it was a motivation and incentive we wanted to use
it is tough lessons learned these last two games
Slegers then admitted Arsenal were ‘lucky’ to have another shot at securing second place against Man United on Saturday
Asked about the squad’s mentality with the WSL’s finale on the horizon
and their UWCL final against Barcelona just around the corner
Slegers admitted she wasn’t thinking about Europe just yet
“I haven’t been watching Barcelona yet
The here and now and Brighton was the most important game
It will always be there in the background but we have to focus on the here and now and that is what we try to achieve with the whole staff.”

Football writer Adrian Clarke looks at key tactical points and players who can be decisive in Matchweek 35
Brighton have beaten Newcastle twice already this season
so the Seagulls are chasing an impressive hat-trick when hosting the Magpies this Sunday
after the two away victories at St James' Park in the Premier League and FA Cup
it would be the first time Brighton have ever defeated the same team three times in one season as a top-flight side
Newcastle are in third place and desperate to stay inside the top five, while Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton believe they can still finish high enough to earn European football in 2025/26
No Premier League side has won more matches since 14 December than Newcastle
who have out come on top in 14 of their last 19 games
Yet their away form against top-half opponents is surprisingly poor
A 3-1 win at Nottingham Forest is their only victory in eight matches so far against their fellow top-11 sides
Newcastle have conceded 2.6 goals per game across those eight matches and this poor return will certainly provide ninth-placed Brighton with the belief that they can again cause Eddie Howe's side problems
Slow starts have been a recurring theme for Newcastle on the road at the division’s toughest opponents
they have fallen behind in all eight away matches when they have faced sides in the current top 11
seven of those early concessions came before the 22nd minute
If Hurzeler’s Brighton start Sunday's match quickly
they could catch their opponents cold once again
There has been a sluggishness about the Magpies early on in away games
and they have been ruthlessly punished for lapses in concentration
Howe’s back four has become fragmented too easily by longer passes early on in games
Manchester City undid them with real ease from an Ederson goal-kick, releasing Omar Marmoush to open the scoring (shown below)
In Newcastle's chastening 4-2 defeat at Brentford, the hosts played out from a goal-kick, moving the ball into midfield, before a lofted, switched pass to Bryan Mbeumo caused panic in the Newcastle defence
The Magpies lost their shape and left-back Lewis Hall became detached from the rest of the back four as Mbeumo went on to score (see below)
The Seagulls are not averse to going direct with their distribution at the right times under Hurzeler
This is a tactic we can expect to see them use on Sunday
They enjoyed success in that manner in the 1-0 win at St James’ Park earlier on this season
A quickly-taken Lewis Dunk free-kick pushed the Newcastle defence backwards, and Danny Welbeck’s subsequent one-two with Georginio Rutter unlocked the door
Hurzeler has triumphed over the Magpies in two differing ways
so his chosen approach for Matchweek 35 could be difficult to predict
It was a resilient backs-to-the-wall defensive display that helped them secure a 1-0 victory in the Premier League last October
They had just 40.1 per cent of possession, were pushed back at will, and were reliant on Newcastle missing chances, as well as Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen's outstanding display
but as you can see from these match stats below
Brighton's 2-1 extra-time win in the FA Cup was earned via a different strategic approach
boasting a lot more possession than they had on their previous visit
that seemed to suit them as they racked up 21 shots and 45 touches inside the Newcastle box
Brighton were able to find more spaces to run into
This suited Yankuba Minteh, who sprinted in beyond Newcastle's exposed high line to latch onto Joao Pedro’s through-ball and score against his former club
Howe’s defence was also caught square and looked rather disjointed as Welbeck scored the winning goal
The striker's movement to show for a Solly March pass was excellent, but with Tino Livramento playing him onside from right-back
it was not a goal the Newcastle head coach would have been pleased about
The Seagulls have plenty of pace in the wide areas
as well as good movement in the centre-forward positions
Having used those qualities to great effect in those previous meetings
Brighton will be well aware that all three goals scored against the EFL Cup winners came via forward passes that pierced a square back four
The space that style creates will suit Brighton's quick forwards
even if making it an open attack-minded game comes with plenty of risk against a team as free-scoring as Newcastle

Newcastle United rescued a late point at Brighton & Hove Albion to keep their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League in their own hands
Eddie Howe’s side had won six of their previous seven top-flight matches but seemed destined for defeat on the south coast
a result which would have left them vulnerable to the teams below them
But Alexander Isak’s 89th-minute penalty — Newcastle were awarded three during this match
but the first two were overturned — puts them three points clear of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest
with the top five certain to qualify for the Champions League
Forest (who play at Crystal Palace on Monday) have a game in hand
Fifth-placed Chelsea (who beat Liverpool later on Sunday) are level on points with fourth-placed Newcastle
three points behind Howe’s side having played the same number of games
a necessary sale by Newcastle last summer for financial reasons
put Brighton ahead with a curling first-half effort and it seemed that might be enough to win it
But Isak’s late penalty salvaged a point for Newcastle at the end of a second half packed with penalty drama (more on that below)
George Caulkin and Chris Waugh analyse the key talking points
As anonymous as Isak was for large spells — he did not have a touch inside the opposition box until the 67th minute and had just 15 in general during the first half — Newcastle did have their moments and finally
slid into a challenge with Sandro Tonali and caught the Newcastle midfielder
only for Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler to immediately replace Wieffer with Tariq Lamptey
The substitute’s first act was to foul Anthony Gordon
who had only just come on to the field for Newcastle
and with his opening contribution he cut inside and drew a foul
but VAR intervened to (rightly) rule that contact had taken place outside the box
Bruno Guimaraes played a pass in behind the Brighton defence
Joe Willock got a foot to the ball before Jan Paul van Hecke and went down
had actually pulled out of the challenge and Willock
Pawson had initially signalled for a penalty but
after being sent over to the monitor by Andrew Madley
The third on-field award came after Fabian Schar’s goalbound free kick from inside the D of the Brighton penalty area was blocked by the outstretched arm of Yasin Ayari
VAR checked to see whether the ball had indeed hit Ayari’s hand but
having asked Pawson to rethink his previous two penalty decisions
told the referee to stick with his original call
It proved third time lucky for Newcastle because
with only his second touch in the opposition box
Isak coolly dispatched his second penalty in as many games to rescue a valuable point for Newcastle
Given he did not make an appearance for Newcastle
Minteh has played an outsized role in the club’s recent existence
if only in the sense they needed him to leave
Without the £30million ($40m) Brighton paid for the winger last summer
Newcastle would have breached the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR)
and a substantive points deduction would have rendered the notion of qualifying for the Champions League moot
Having scored for his new club at St James’ Park in the FA Cup in March — Brighton won that game 2-1 after extra time — Minteh was at it again
niggling away at Newcastle before chipping in with another goal
When Tino Livramento headed away a ball into the box in the 28th minute
cutting in and around Livramento and Sandro Tonali after feinting to shoot
His curled finish took a nick off Dan Burn
Minteh had refused to celebrate his goal on Tyneside out of respect to Newcastle
He wagged his fingers at the traveling supporters and kissed the Brighton badge before being pulled away by his team-mates
Newcastle fans responded with chants of “You’re just a s*** Jacob Murphy,” but Minteh had made an impact again
Newcastle left it late — very late — to turn a bad day at the office into a half-decent one
The experience was a familiar one for Howe’s team
who have not won any of their eight Premier League fixtures at Brighton’s Amex Stadium
but on this occasion they were not passive participants
While Newcastle struggled to get their big players into the game, they had more possession than Brighton
they did not allow a bitty performance and some unfavourable decisions to grind them down
The final scoreline suggests Newcastle missed a significant opportunity given that a victory would have seen them move two points behind second-placed Arsenal
they finished the day fourth in the Premier League
level on points with Chelsea and three ahead of Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa
The circumstances paint a slightly different picture
with Isak’s penalty earning a draw which for long spells looked out of reach
qualifying for the Champions League remains within their grasp
although they next play Chelsea and Arsenal before finishing the season with a home match against Everton
but this game allowed one conclusion to be drawn: Newcastle will not give up without a fight

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler believes Brighton & Hove Albion should have been awarded a penalty in the 1-1 home draw against Newcastle United
Craig Pawson initially gave Newcastle second-half spot kicks for a foul by Tariq Lamptey on fellow substitute Anthony Gordon and for a challenge by Jan Paul van Hecke on Joe Willock
only to change his mind both times after the intervention of VAR Andy Madley
Pawson looked at the incidents again on the pitch side monitor at the Amex Stadium before awarding Newcastle a free-kick on the first occasion as Lamptey made initial contact outside the area
then booking Willock for diving in the second incident
Newcastle equalised with a 89th-minute penalty by Alexander Isak after sub Yasin Ayari handled a free-kick by Fabian Schar in the defensive wall
but Hurzeler claimed Pawson should have awarded Brighton a second-half penalty for a challenge by Sandro Tonali on Matt O’Riley
“That’s a thing I don’t understand,” Hurzeler said during his post-match press conference
“When there is not even a touch (by Van Hecke) he blows the whistle and gives a penalty for them
I don’t see there was a big difference to the foul by ‘T’ (Lamptey) on Gordon and the foul on Matt O’Riley
asked about the impact VAR had on the game
added: “I always say VAR makes football more fair and today we saw it
The one foul that wasn’t even a touch from JP (van Hecke)
without VAR we would sit here and talk about someone who tried to get a penalty without a touch
on the other side we all know it breaks the rhythm.”
The points dropped via Newcastle’s late equaliser
following a first-half lead provided by Yankuba Minteh against his former club
leave Brighton in tenth place in the tight race to finish eighth
which is likely to be good enough to reach the Europa Conference League
They go to Wolves for their penultimate away game on Saturday a point below Bournemouth in eighth
adrift of Brentford in ninth on goal difference and above Fulham in 11th by a point

Fabian Hurzeler has banned talk about reaching Europe at Brighton & Hove Albion
The German head coach believes it has been a distraction to the underlying quest for continued improvement at the club
Brighton reached Europe for the first time under former head coach Roberto De Zerbi with a sixth-placed finish in 2022-23
which clinched a spot in the Europa League
They are in ninth place in the table with four games left and in contention to qualify either for the Europa Conference League in Hurzeler’s first season in charge
because I think you get distracted by thoughts like this,” Hurzeler told The Athletic during his press conference for Newcastle United’s visit on Sunday
“The thing we can influence is our performance
how we can do the things we want to do on the pitch
“Then we will see what we achieve at the end of the season
but I don’t want to talk anymore about Europe
or which place we need to be at the end of the season
We know how we can make our supporters proud
but the only thing we can influence is the next game
Hurzeler has sent the same message to his players in the build-up to the match against Carabao Cup winners Newcastle
who are pursuing one of five qualification slots for the Champions League
it is always ‘we are three points behind Europe
or now we can achieve the Champions League'”
and I think that is not good for our processes
“Sometimes I have the feeling we get a little bit distracted from our development
and therefore I want to really focus on ourselves in the last games
to focus on the things we can influence on the pitch
and then let’s see what we get out (of it) at the end of the season.”
Match Report: Brighton 4–2 Arsenal Women: Seagulls soar in historic WSL victory over Gunners | OneFootballJust Arsenal News
Brighton & Hove Albion Women produced a stunning performance to defeat Arsenal Women 4-2 at Broadfield Stadium this evening
marking their first-ever Women’s Super League victory over the Gunners
This result deals a significant blow to Arsenal’s hopes of securing second place and Champions League qualification
Brighton opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Fran Kirby, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot the ball home. Arsenal responded in the 29th minute when Caitlin Foord finished a well-worked move to level the scores
Brighton regained the lead just before halftime
with Jelena Čanković finding the net in the 43rd minute
The Seagulls came out strong after the break, with Čanković scoring her second goal in the 52nd minute, followed by Kiko Seike adding a fourth just two minutes later. Arsenal managed a late consolation goal in stoppage time
with Mariona Caldentey scoring in the 93rd minute
Player of the Match was Brighton’s goalkeeper, Sophie Baggaley, who saved many on-target Arsenal goals – 8/9 I believe but don’t quote me
This victory propels Brighton to fifth place in the WSL standings, marking a significant achievement for the club. For Arsenal
the defeat leaves their Champions League qualification hopes hanging in the balance
with a crucial match against Manchester United looming
Arsenal will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Manchester United on Saturday
in their final WSL fixture of the season – this is a match that will likely determine Arsenal’s European fate for next season
There is now only 1 point between Arsenal Women who are 2nd
and Man United who are 3rd in the WSL table
2nd & 3rd placements in the WSL will go down to the wire in Saturday’s last game of the WSL season
with Man City now unable to catch either team
both teams will go through to next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League – all that remains to be determined is whether they enter at the Round 1 or Round 2 stage of the competition

Dull seasons are rare in the recent history of Brighton & Hove Albion
The last decade has packed in a promotion near-miss
eight years in the top division spent under four managers while progressing from regulars in the bottom six in the table to the top 10
That is reflected by the variety of questions posed by subscribers for our mailbag
addressing everything from the futures of Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson
the job done so far by head coach Fabian Hurzeler
the recruitment model and areas of the squad that need strengthening
Is the club optimistic of extending Mitoma or is the writing on the wall
It is hard to predict what will happen in the summer transfer window
especially with Brighton’s quest for European qualification still in the balance with four games to go
So I will concentrate on what I know as things stand through sources in the player’s camp and at the club (all sources in this article have asked to remain anonymous to protect relationships)
The unflustered way the club is run from the top is a perfect fit for his personality and he continues to thrive on the pitch
He has zero interest in a money-motivated move to the Saudi Pro League
while the rejected offers from Al Nassr of £54million ($72.1m) and £61m in the January window leave the club in a strong position
There are bigger clubs in the Premier League and in Europe able to afford significant fees
but the number of potential suitors reduces when taking into consideration how many of those clubs need a left-winger and pursue a transfer model that would see them paying a large sum for a player who turns 28 later this month
stemming from the explosion of interest in the club in his native Japan and Asia in general
to take into account in what would represent a fair price and a good deal overall
but he also appreciates what he has at Brighton
Qualifying for Europe would improve the chances that he stays
Do we have the squad depth to improve on our last European campaign or is the risk of suffering significantly in the league again the same
Clubs with far bigger resources than Brighton have felt the impact of the addition of European football on their league form
Newcastle dropped by 11 points and three places to seventh last season after competing in the Champions League
Aston Villa are on course to suffer a similar fate this time around
but not as much quality and experience in the first-choice XI as the group that reached Europe under Roberto De Zerbi in 2022-23
The achievement of winning a Europa League group the following year containing Marseille
Ajax and AEK Athens should not be underestimated
even though the first leg tie at Roma in the last 16 went horribly wrong with that 4-0 defeat
Brighton are more likely this time to qualify for the Europa Conference League
The third tier competition brings benefits and disadvantages — more chance of a deep run
but more draining travel to far-flung European outposts
What is Fabian’s tactical vision for our team as you see it
combined with controlling games in possession
This is an inexperienced squad which has been ravaged by injuries
The constant chopping and changing has made it difficult for players to build connections with each other to enhance fluidity
I was struck by Hurzeler saying during the sequence of six straight wins
which followed the 7-0 debacle at Nottingham Forest
that the players were getting there but they were still not fit enough
It is still early days in his tenure; it remains a work in progress
It is far too soon to make cast-iron judgments
Do you think Fabian has learned and adjusted to managing in the Premier League throughout the year
And in what ways do you think he can continue to learn and grow if he is to become a permanent fixture in the PL
but I am still learning through life experiences and I am knocking on towards 62
He’s had plenty of those in his first year
The important bit is not to keep on repeating them
The fluctuating experiences in Hurzeler’s first season both as a head coach in England and at elite level will stand him in good stead going forward
Do you think the decision makers at Brighton view this year’s defensive weaknesses as a feature or a bug
are they willing to continue conceding goals as part of a high risk/high reward style of play
or do they see defence as an area to be improved
Every end of season is accompanied by analysis internally of areas where there is room for improvement
It cannot be any other way in the fiercely competitive environment of the Premier League
The past three seasons in which Brighton have progressed from a bottom-six club into a top-half club are a useful barometer
More goals (55) have been conceded in 34 games than in the 38 when qualifying for Europe in sixth place under De Zerbi in 2022-23 (53) and when finishing ninth under Graham Potter in 2021-22 (44)
The current leakage rate also leaves Hurzeler’s side on course to exceed the 62 conceded last season
when the drop to 11th for De Zerbi’s team was accompanied by the distraction and extra strain of the Europa League
That the team is saddled with the worst defensive record of any team in the top 12 is a transparent area for gains to be made
Defending starts from the front and Hurzeler has been very unlucky with injuries in the back line
after concentrating on attacking areas in last summer’s big splash on nine new signings
an injection of pace at the other end will assist Hurzeler’s desire to defend with a high line
That tactics has been adjusted by necessity as the season has worn on to fit the personnel at his disposal
One of the most interesting stories for 2025-26 will be who is going to be our goalkeeper and who will be No 2
It’s a big disappointment that Rushworth never played a game and probably never will
Bart Verbruggen will be No 1 again unless speculation about interest in the 22-year-old Netherlands international from some heavyweight clubs in Europe progresses into a meaningful bid
which leaves no room for 23-year-old Carl Rushworth to satisfy his understandable desire for game time if the status quo continues
I can see him becoming a permanent first choice at a Championship club next season
The depth in the goalkeeping department is impressive
James Beadle and Tom McGill in a cycle of loan spells
Matters could come to a head this summer with one or two departures
Over recent years we have included a handful of experienced Premier League pros in our squad and these have proved to be beneficial additions both on and off the field
Do you think there is any chance that the club will look to bring in Kevin De Bruyne for a season or two
Wages and competition for his services might be an issue
Mats Hummels was a target before choosing what has turned out to be the 36-year-old German defender’s final season before retirement at Roma
Jordan Henderson was also a player of interest last year before the midfielder
Losing the versatility and nous of James Milner
to hamstring trouble after starting the first three league games of the season is one of the many injury blows suffered by the head coach
An addition of that ilk is possible this summer after losing Pascal Gross (to Borussia Dortmund) and Adam Lallana (back to Southampton) last year
Do the hierarchy view Malick Yalcouye as a squad addition for next season or a further loan
but any current view can be impacted by variables — for example a departure opening up a place or a player catching Hurzeler’s eye in pre-season
Who would have expected Yasin Ayari to feature so prominently in midfield this season after modest loan spells in the Championship at Blackburn and Coventry last season
Malick Yalcouye has done particularly well at Sturm Graz
The 19-year-old Mali midfielder is still raw
but he has the potential to grow into a Premier League player
My preference would be a loan to a Championship side
but the reunion with Potter in January has not worked out
has made just one start and six substitute appearances out of a possible 10 matches when the idea was to secure more minutes than he had been getting under Hurzeler
No 9 competition at Brighton next season has already increased for the goal-starved Republic of Ireland international with the January window signing of Stefanos Tzimas from Nurnberg in Germany’s second tier
The 19-year-old Greek talent was loaned straight back to Nurnberg
He will link up in July when the players report back for pre-season training
Is there any prospect of a movement in the business model towards keeping our standout players for longer before the sale or does the model remain as is
There is a general misconception that Brighton have an open door policy to sell prized assets for a bumper profit at the drop of a hat
That is not the intention and nothing will change
The price and the circumstances have to be deemed suitable before they are willing to trade
They know where they are in the food chain
The fact is that a move to a bigger and more successful club
will be attractive to their players nine times out of 10

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler has spoken to Yaya Toure for tips on managing African players in his squad
assistant coach of the Saudi Arabia national team
visited Brighton’s training complex on Wednesday to watch a session and speak with Hurzeler
The Brighton squad pushing to qualify for Europe includes Carlos Baleba (Cameroon)
Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast) and Tariq Lamptey (Ghana)
“He is an unbelievable personality and he was a great player,” said Hurzeler during his press conference on Thursday ahead of Newcastle United’s visit on Sunday
First of all he has a good relationship with the African players and it’s very important that we have someone who can talk to the players with an understanding of where they come from
That is something I want to do in the future
visit the countries of the African players
so he can give me and the players some small advices on what you need to get to the highest level.”
41-year-old Toure won the Premier League with Manchester City three times
the Champions League with Barcelona and the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast during an illustrious playing career
“It was interesting for me to get an understanding of how he adapted to the Premier League,” Hurzeler added
“He needed time to be able to play in the Premier League
He said the physical demands were completely different
It gives then an understanding of how he adapted
because he had some great coaches in his life and he always took something away from the coaches
He shared two or three advice that stayed in his mind
and that is something I can also take away
I took away a lot of things and for sure we will will stay in touch
Let’s see how this relationship continues.”
Jan Paul van Hecke is set to return to the centre of Brighton’s defence against Newcastle at the Amex Stadium after missing the last two home games
The Dutch international was ruled out of last Saturday’s 3-2 win against West Ham United under medical protocols following a late clash of heads with Yunus Emre Konak in the preceding 4-2 defeat at Brentford
He trained yesterday and he said to me immediately afterwards he wants to play.” Van Hecke was suspended for the 2-2 home draw against Leicester City earlier this month after a red card in the 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace
Injury issues at centre-back are easing for Hurzeler
Adam Webster trained on Wednesday and is an option for the matchday squad together with Igor Julio
Webster has been out since the end of March
Brighton have beaten Newcastle twice away from home this season
in the league (1-0) and in the fifth round of the FA Cup (2-1 after extra time)
11 points adrift of the third-placed visitors who are chasing Champions League qualification after earning a place in the Europa Conference League by winning the Carabao Cup

The Magpis needed a late penalty from Alexander Isak to rescue a point at Amex Stadium but Murphy says that was the least they deserved
"Eddie Howe said in one of his post match interviews that their problem was they just weren't clinical enough
but actually it was an accomplished performance," he told Match of the Day 2
which is unusual with the quality forwards they've got
was that bit of calmness and decision making in the final third
Howe should be really pleased with the level of performance
"They controlled the game for long periods
It's just about finding the right option."
Ex-Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney added: "I think Newcastle are a really good team and a good watch as well
but what I liked about them was that they kept pushing
"They kept finding themselves in the right areas and doing the right things - it was just their little details
They have to get those right and then they win games comfortably."

He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast he is not concerned about the Magpies missing out on Europe's top tier competition
"Going to Brighton is a hugely difficult game," Morrison said
"They didn't play well but they got the penalty at the end
They kept going and that could be a crucial point
I still think it is Newcastle's to lose."

I think they will get in the Champions League
I look at their run of games and there are some tough one in there but at home they are fantastic in front of their fans
"One player they did miss was Joelinton to break up the midfield and with his powerful running and the defensive work he does
I still think Newcastle will be good enough to get into that Champions League spot."

Brighton & Hove Albion’s hopes of reaching Europe are over
A run of three defeats and two draws has wrecked Fabian Hurzeler’s side’s challenge
I’ve said it — a summary that would make sense in any normal season
that Brighton’s hopes of clinching European football remain very much alive as they sit in 10th place in the Premier League table with five games to go
There are still a wide variety of permutations governing how many English teams will qualify for Europe
what is the situation as things stand and what shape are Brighton in as they bid to turn around their current nosedive
it is ultimately Brighton’s own results that matter most
but clinging onto the European dream is also affected by how rivals fare during the run-in
The Premier League has grabbed one of UEFA’s two European Performance Spots (EPS)
which are given to the two domestic leagues that have performed the best in coefficient terms this season
It means the top five teams in the table qualify for the Champions League instead of four
Newcastle have qualified for the UEFA Conference League (UECL) by winning the Carabao Cup — or have they
Champions League qualification will take precedence if they finish in the top five (they are currently fifth)
the UECL spot will go to the highest-placed club not already qualified for Europe
it is in Brighton’s interests that Newcastle make the Champions League
The implications of the most advantageous result when they visit the Amex on May 4 in the 35th round of league fixtures are tough to contemplate — my head is already hurting
That will partly depend on how the table looks after the 34th round of games this coming weekend
Speaking of which, the FA Cup semi-finals take place at Wembley at the weekend (that quarter-final exit for Hurzeler’s team at home to Nottingham Forest on penalties last month still grates)
Rivals Palace face Aston Villa on Saturday
while Forest take on Manchester City on Sunday
Apart from the obvious reason of Brighton fans not wanting Palace to win a major trophy
it will also improve their European chances if Oliver Glasner’s team miss out on silverware and the Europa League spot
which goes to the winners of the competition
That is because the other three semi-finalists are all involved in the top-five tussle for the Champions League
if the FA Cup winners also qualify for the Champions League
then the Europa League place would go to the next highest finishers in the table not already qualified for Europe
The crux of the matter is that the fortunes of Newcastle in the league and Palace in the FA Cup could increase the number of European spots available
but there is a pretty good chance that eighth will be good enough to reach Europe (it could go lower than that)
Eighth is realistically the highest place possible for Hurzeler’s side — they are nine points adrift of Villa
The starting point is for Brighton to help themselves
They need to rediscover the winning feeling
the one last experienced at home to Fulham in early March
a golden opportunity awaits on Saturday when former Brighton head coach Graham Potter brings West Ham to the Amex Stadium
Their campaign has been drifting towards a nondescript conclusion for several weeks
They’re in 17th place with a gap of 15 points to Ipswich in 18th and a superior goal difference
Ipswich will officially join already-relegated Leicester and Southampton back in the Championship next season unless they win at Newcastle on Saturday and West Ham lose at the Amex
If only it were that simple for Brighton to beat West Ham
They blew an even better opportunity in the previous home game earlier this month by letting a lead slip twice in a 2-2 draw against Leicester
who were not quite down at that stage but were effectively doomed
the only consistently fit and dependable performer in the centre of defence this season
The Dutchman was discharged from hospital on Saturday night after he collided with Yunus Konak in the closing moments at Brentford and was stretchered off
but a European prize is probable for whoever comes out on top
a further two points adrift of Hurzeler’s side
What makes it harder to predict is that none of the teams involved are in good form
Bournemouth have one win in their last eight league games
Fulham have lost four of their last six matches
and Palace one win in five (against Brighton)
which was followed by successive thrashings away to Manchester City (5-2) and Newcastle (5-0)
It is hard to call who will fall over the line
That depends on whether your glass is half-full or half-empty
Finishes of ninth under Potter (2021-22) before he left for Chelsea and sixth under Roberto De Zerbi (2022-23) were followed by the Europa League last 16 and a drop to 11th in De Zerbi’s second season (2023-24)
Cutting some slack to Hurzeler would take account of a 32-year-old German on a learning curve in his first season in the Premier League after a spell in 2.Bundesliga
confronted by squad churn and a mountain of injuries to key players
Non-believers would point to last summer’s record spend of nearly £200million on nine signings
injuries exacerbated by the head coach’s intensive demands
plus the lack of a clear identity in style of play compared to Potter and De Zerbi
Missing out on Europe would be a disappointment
but it would ramp up the pressure on Hurzeler to restore an upward trajectory in his second year
The Friends Meeting House in Brighton is transformed and the perfect setting for this haunting play
a place built for silent reflection now hosting a performance where silence is achieved
Sitting (In Silence) is a new addition to Brighton Fringe
we meet our main character who seems to be retreating from the world
a little lost in herself but looking to heal
a conversation with her seemingly estranged father takes place
recalling the shared happiness of childhood
the challenges they both faced together and the relationships around them
The actors show us how the characters are able to look back to their pasts and review their current situations
Whilst the truth may be obscured by the moment
This two-handed play is full of warmth and affection
allowing the audience to reflect on their own relationships whilst hearing a compelling story
the events revealing themselves cautiously as we build a picture of their lives
The beautifully simple set and stark performance space are ideal and work well with the evocative soundscape created where birdsong and weather patterns emphasise the changes in mood
your own ideas about how these characters got to this point and what may happen next
A sensitive and stirring performed addition to Brighton Fringe

Ancient reports tell of a time when circuses were all about real
and a fat man in a red suit (not Santa) presiding over it all as trapeze artists zoomed overhead
Acts such as Cirque Du Soleil changed perceptions of circus some time ago
In this preview of a number of the shows appearing over the coming weeks
Revel Puck pitch their big top and give us a taster of what they have to offer the circus visitor in 2025
Hosted by a female ringmaster (Ringmistress
Ringperson?) who seems enthusiastic but is let down by a slightly iffy sound system
the first couple of acts actually feel rather like throw-backs to an earlier era
audience members are invited to enter the ring and shine torches on two artists as they perform some dance and acrobatic moves
apparently illustrating themes of trust and risk
If this is the first time you’ve seen someone stand on another person’s shoulders there’s a chance you might find this impressive
Next up was a roller-skater dancing around the ring and then spinning some hula hoops around her body
but didn’t strike me as particularly original
Things look up as we move towards the end of the short first half
A pair of dancers inhabit big top tent-style props while dancing to East 17’s House of Love
but their act is lifted by the originality of the performance and the ingenious use of their props
This is followed by two more dancers with enormous balloons attached to their heads
into which they proceed to immerse their whole bodies
the concept isn’t complicated but the imagination and brio of the act make it hilarious and joyful
things take a queer turn and it feels like we are definitely in 21st century Brighton at last
With a lot of young children in the audience
I imagine there will have been several “interesting” family conversations after the show
and if this served as an early introduction to life outside the heteronormative bubble
I saw one boy of maybe 10 or 12 with his eyes wide as saucers and hands clamped over his mouth in amazement as the gorgeous Lucinda B
whose vertiginous platform heels are impressive enough
performs an acrobatic striptease which left her in nothing but glittery nipple tassels and modesty pouch
That kid is unlikely to forget the experience in a hurry
and hopefully his parents will have used it as the start of a constructive conversation
The Revel Puck Circus runs throughout Brighton Fringe
provides a showcase for both traditional and edgier circus acts
so visitors should have no trouble finding themselves something which suits their particular tastes
The Revel Puck Circus plays until 1 June at Brighton Fringe.
