A first-of-its-kind utility system is launching in Oklahoma that will allow Broken Arrow customers to view their water usage in near real-time
The City of Broken Arrow is unveiling its new WaterSmart customer portal on May 7
offering a dramatic upgrade in transparency
the City’s current online payment system will shut down on May 5
Online bill pay will remain temporarily unavailable until WaterSmart is live
WaterSmart’s biggest feature is its real-time water usage dashboard
giving users access to data from one year down to one hour
That granularity will help customers monitor water use
catch problems quickly and avoid surprise bills
"I think our citizens should be very excited about this new technology," said Mayor Debra Wimpee
"They’ll be empowered to view their water usage
check for leaks and set up alert notifications through the online portal."
it could run your bill up $50 to $100 a month
the system will tell you something’s happening."
The system is the result of nearly a decade of planning and upgrades
The city began converting all 42,000 residential and commercial meters to automated meter readers (AMRs) in 2016
The final phase of AMR installation wrapped in 2023
Next came the setup of 28 Neptune 360 gateway receivers across Broken Arrow
which now collect and transmit meter data via cellular signal—eliminating the need for manual meter readings
"This took us from technicians driving through neighborhoods to a cellular-based system," said Utilities Director Timothy Robins
"Instead of waiting a month or more for data
Broken Arrow partnered with VertexOne to power the WaterSmart portal
integrating it with the Neptune 360 system and the Paymentus billing platform already familiar to residents
"This gives customers detailed water reports and smart analytics," Robins said
"The system compares usage data with the user’s profile and generates easy-to-read insights."
When the WaterSmart portal launches on Tuesday, May 7, residents should visit BrokenArrowOK.gov/Utility-Billing to register for a new account
Customers who use the same email address tied to their old accounts will retain access to their usage history
\"I think our citizens should be very excited about this new technology,\" said Mayor Debra Wimpee

check for leaks and set up alert notifications through the online portal.\"

The mystery didn’t last long. After just two days and a couple of cryptic clues, the Rooster Days egg hunt came to an end at Ray Harrel Nature Park

Kerry managed to spot the egg hidden under the spring marker
Just as Jeffery almost walked away thinking it was a water bottle

The prize for finding the egg is $1,000 and getting to ride in the Rooster Days Parade

The Egg will then be donated to The Museum Broken Arrow

the OSSAA voted to implement a shot clock in Oklahoma high school basketball
It won't be as big of a game-changer as some think
With regard to the movement of talent in high school football
the ultimate “wow!” moment occurred in May 2022 — when then-Jenks freshman quarterback Shaker Reisig moved to arch-rival Union High School one day after the Trojans concluded their spring-practice period
The Reisig switch was executed 5½ months after he and the 2021 Trojans had beaten Union for the Class 6AI title
impactful player moves since Reisig’s Union switch
but on Tuesday morning there was a call that elicited a reaction similar to the Reisig-to-Union reaction of three years ago
a four-star recruit and an elite defensive back with more than 20 major-college offers
My “wow!” caller notified me after Stanford released a statement on X
When the Broken Arrow Public Schools hired Travis Hill away from Muskogee in December
talented kids are going to want to be on Hill’s roster
Player movement is a common thing now at the prep level
the brilliant Semaj Stanford soon will be a Broken Arrow Tiger — and for two more seasons
He will be a junior during the 2025 season
Stanford will conclude the track season with his Jenks teammates
An interesting layer in the Jenks-Broken Arrow dynamic: Last season
Jenks starters at running back (Oklahoma State commit KD Jones)
quarterback (Owen Jones) and wide receiver (Kayleb Barnett) had started their varsity football careers at Broken Arrow
In August 2023: While watching Trojan Preview scrimmaging at Allan Trimble Stadium
I chatted at field level with several football figures
“The best player in the state is a ninth-grader
all I knew about Semaj Stanford is that he is the younger brother of former Jenks star Jalyn Stanford
who now is a third-year sophomore at Sam Houston State
But because that football figure made such a heavy statement about Semaj Stanford before he had played a single varsity game snap
I’ve always sustained a close watch on a 6-foot
180-pound DB who is said to have a high-level football IQ and always seems to make the right play
College recruiters know all about Semaj Stanford
who also has been occasionally used as a dynamic pass-catcher on offense
There are Big 12 offers from Oklahoma State
There are offers also from the University of Tulsa
Spartan teams have captured three consecutive 6AI championships
Spartan quarterback Carson Kirby enters his senior season with a career total of 26 starts
the 2025 Spartans are favored to get a fourth 6AI title (and what would be an incredible 11th title overall in 12 seasons)
The Tigers will be a problem for every opponent
Hill coached championship teams at East Central and Muskogee
and now he has Broken Arrow’s massive enrollment and impressive resources with which to work
With Bill Blankenship having returned as the Owasso head coach
and as junior-to-be QB Drew Frankenfield chose to stay at Owasso instead of making a move to Union
I’d probably position the 2024 state runner-up Rams at the No
2 position in a pre-spring practice ranking of 6AI teams
the Oklahoma Game of the Week should be Owasso at Broken Arrow
After having been the Tiger head man for four seasons
Josh Blankenship was dismissed in November

After months of research and community engagement, Broken Arrow Public Schools will consider a hybrid instructional calendar that maintains a five-day school week, rather than transitioning to a four-day week for the 25-26 school year. The proposed calendar will be presented to the Board of Education for review and approval at their Feb
Seeking possible solutions for the worsening teaching shortage
the discussion around a revised instructional calendar began in February 2024 when BAPS surveyed families and staff to gauge interest in a four-day school week
it became clear that while there was interest in exploring changes
the community valued a structured and balanced approach
the district formed a Hybrid School Calendar Committee
consider potential impacts and develop recommendations
“Our goal throughout this process has been to identify a calendar that attracts and retains teachers
and the well-being of our entire school community,” said BAPS Superintendent
“We appreciate the exhaustive work of our committee members and the valuable feedback from families and staff.”
The committee was divided into six subcommittees—Elementary Instruction
These groups examined key details in their respective areas and the overall impact on school operations
They spoke to local school districts currently using a four-day model
as well as districts across the nation that are more comparable in size to BAPS. The district also launched a series of surveys – six in total – to gather feedback from the community
Following months of review, debate and surveys, the committee arrived at a final recommendation of a hybrid instructional calendar that maintains a five-day school week while incorporating strategic adjustments to better support students and staff. The proposed calendar includes: earlier release times for elementary students
more breaks in the second semester to promote student and staff mental health
providing greater predictability for families
There are also fewer distance learning days
“We knew that any changes had to preserve instructional time
and ensure that employees would not see a reduction in hours or wages,” Perry said
we’ve incorporated the feedback from our community to meet those needs while also enhancing the overall school experience and making BAPS a more attractive option for teachers.”
The hybrid calendar will be presented to the Board of Education on Feb
Those members of the public wishing to express their concerns or support for the calendar proposal may contact their board member directly
or make plans to attend the public meeting on Feb
“For a district of our size to change to a four-day model - it’s just too big a lift to accomplish in a short time
especially at the level of excellence we expect in Broken Arrow,” said Perry
“It may be something we revisit in the future
we believe the hybrid proposal is a better fit for our community.”

If you've ever played games like Steel Division, you'll find a lot of familiar mechanics here. Infantry, vehicles, aircraft, and support weapons are called in using a ticking income of requisition you get from holding control points, and reinforcements will spawn at specific bases before moving out to their final destination. Thus, a lot of attention has to be paid to making sure the way to the front is secure, or you might get sniped trying to bring in fresh troops.
Even on max settings, Broken Arrow does have a little bit of a budget look to it. The explosions are great, but the vehicle models are a bit flat, with fairly simple, clay-like textures that don't really react to light in a way that makes you go, "Wow!" This isn't exactly a Microsoft Flight Simulator-level replica of the F-15. But I'm generally playing so zoomed out that I'm not nitpicking the little details anyway.
From what little I've seen of Broken Arrow, I'm quite interested in finding out what the rest of its campaign, its multiplayer modes, and army builder will add to its snappy, easy-to-command RTS battles. We'll be able to take the full version for a ride this June.

A recent Broken Arrow High School graduate is working to leave a legacy for his community through a license plate
Parker Wagnon created a specialty plate to support Broken Arrow Public Schools
the final step is getting enough people to apply by May 1 to launch production
began designing the plate during his senior year
He envisioned something that would instill pride in Broken Arrow and give back to the school district that shaped him
Wagnon’s design was signed into law by Gov
The plate features a black background with the school district’s signature gold Broken Arrow logo
Wagnon said he went through multiple drafts with input from the district before settling on the final look
The tag becomes a recognizable symbol of Broken Arrow pride
the state requires at least 100 completed applications
Wagnon says they’re only about a third of the way there
He believes one big obstacle is that the application has to be printed and mailed—a process he believes has slowed down participation
$20 goes directly to Broken Arrow Public Schools
Wagnon has distributed printed applications to every Broken Arrow school site and local tag agency
A digital version of the application can also be downloaded here and printed to help streamline the process for interested residents
If 100 applications are submitted by May 1
