While the company exited bankruptcy in September 2023

The company faces competitions from online stores, such as Amazon, and also seasonal pop-ups, such as Spirit Halloween
which pushed into the Christmas market as well this year

A new Brooks Landing Pharmacy has opened this week at 910 Genesee Street in Rochester's 19th Ward, officials of the University of Rochester and its Medical Center announced today
The newly renovated pharmacy will provide residents of this underserved area increased access to essential pharmacy services in a convenient location
Officials of the University and the City said the new location will provide an oasis in the pharmacy desert created by the closure of a commercial pharmacy at 670 Thurston Road in 2022
and plans announced last week to close another at 814 West Main Street
“I’m extremely pleased that a new Highland Pharmacy has opened in the University’s Brooks Landing district to immediately help our neighbors by offering convenient access to needed prescriptions
and health guidance,” said University of Rochester President Sarah C
“The University is actively involved with community partners in the 19th Ward and the City of Rochester to better understand and address some of the 19th Ward’s more unique challenges
With recent closings of other pharmacies in the neighborhood
the University has been exploring ways to ensure residents have access to needed medications as part of the City’s Rochester Pharmacy Coalition.”
Mayor Malik Evans applauded the University for working to open the new location as quickly as possible
“My team has worked tirelessly to identify and support community partners who can help fill the critical need for a pharmacy in Southwest Rochester,” said Mayor Malik D
“I am grateful to the University of Rochester Medical Center and Highland Hospital for answering this call by opening the Highland Pharmacy at Brooks Landing
and I am proud of our continued efforts in City Hall to support investments to provide the people of Southwest Rochester with equitable access to lifesaving
Working with partners who share our commitment to the health and wellbeing of all our residents moves us closer to creating a safe
equitable and prosperous Rochester by inspiring hope and delivering opportunity for everyone.”
The Brooks Landing Pharmacy offers a wide range of services
The new pharmacy, operated by Highland Hospital, previously served Rochester residents as part of the Anthony Jordan Health Center on Holland Street in the Upper Falls neighborhood
Jordan Health decided to operate its own pharmacy at the health center
URMC and Highland made plans to move to the Brooks Landing location
which is convenient to residents of the 19th Ward and members of the University community who live on or near campus
“Jordan Health is one of the many community partners we collaborate with to provide City residents convenient access to high-quality medical care and health-related services
including pharmacy care,” said Kathy Parrinello
CEO of Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals
“I’m pleased that through this latest collaboration we are able to restore pharmacy services for residents of the 19th Ward and other nearby neighborhoods.”
the Highland Brooks Landing Pharmacy location will also serve patients who previously filled prescriptions at a commercial pharmacy inside Jordan’s Woodward Health Center
Woodward is about a half a mile away from the Brooks Landing pharmacy
“Residents in the South District need access to medicine and other necessities
and I’m thrilled that the University of Rochester is opening a new pharmacy that will help constituents in my district bridge the gap to the medicine and care they deserve,” City Council Vice President LaShay D
“Following the loss of pharmacy options in the 19th ward in recent years
I’m proud to see one of our city’s great institutions is in alignment with our City's mission to create Safer Neighborhoods
Quality Housing and Equitable Access to Opportunity for all Rochesterians.”
Highland also operates the South Wedge Pharmacy
which provides the same services as the new Brooks Landing pharmacy to residents of the South Wedge and adjacent neighborhoods

Birmingham-based Books-A-Million closed its Brook Highland store on Highway 280 today after 27 years
The closing surprised many of the customers inside the popular bookstore
the store’s iconic Books-A-Million sign was removed
there were no special clearance or moving sales of any kind indicating the store was shuttering—only employees packing up the books
told Bham Now while shopping with his three children ages 4 to 9. “We didn’t really know that it was happening
I sure hope they move somewhere else because we do like to bring the kids in to be able to find resources.”
This is the second Books-A-Million store to close in the Birmingham area since the pandemic struck in March 2020. The other store was in Brookwood Village, which is nearly vacant

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” is a lyric sung often in December
but when we pause to reflect on the magic that is the holiday season
it becomes easy to believe this catchy tune
One of the simplest joys that perfectly exemplifies the awesomeness that is this time of year is the lights and inflatables placed outside of homes just for this month
The colorful glows that come from stringed bulbs lining gutters tells a new storyline about homes that we pass every day
They are suddenly transformed into bright narratives telling holiday tales and bringing cheer
Birmingham residents are in full swing this year when it comes to this particular holiday tradition
which makes it fun for other residents in the city to drive around and enjoy the views
We did exactly that this week and had the best of times
Neighborhoods all around the city highlighted the excitement residents feel in sharing joy with their community
It’s fun to aimlessly wander around while searching
but here are a few of our favorite areas to explore if you prefer a loose guide
A world full of Christmas cheer can be found at the intersection of Highways 119 and 280
as plenty of families in the Brook Highland neighborhood are going all out on decorating this year
One of my personal favorites over the years is found on Somerset Lane
which is located by taking the first left after pulling into the neighborhood off Brook Highland Drive (which has its own fun inflatable display)
then taking the second left and driving down into a cul-de-sac
As you approach the circle you are greeted by all your favorite cartoon characters over the years
says hello from an opened present box as SpongeBob and friends dance behind him
Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang reenact the nativity scene
and dozens of others animated friends make for quite the display with this tradition has gone on for many years
I reached out to the couple behind this cheer-bringing venture–Greg and Terri Hirsch–to learn more
My next door neighbor was the art teacher at the high school
she put out hand painted characters in her yard and we fell in love with them
We were then transferred to Birmingham and lived in Little Ridge subdivision off of 119
I decided I wanted to try my hand at making the characters like my Casper neighbor
I started out with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse and my kids loved them
The next year I added Winnie the Pooh and Tigger
The characters moved with us to Nashville
where I continued with this family tradition of adding characters each year
After four years in Franklin and many more characters
we were transferred back to Birmingham and we continued on with the tradition
Each character is hand drawn by me on plywood
My husband cuts them out and then I sand and paint them
I continued the tradition for my grandson
we keep it going for all of our neighbors to enjoy
I turn 61 this year and this was going to be my last year
but after all the emotional posts I received from the neighborhood
we are going to try to continue as long as we can.”
As you're leaving Somerset Lane to go back to the main road
you’ll almost surely see a bright glow coming from the houses over on Brook Highland Circle
Three to four neighbors on this road go all out with displays as well
as inflatables join large amounts of lights to make for a colorful adventure
A trip to Brook Highland would be incomplete without stopping by the seriously impressive collaborative effort put together by neighbors on a little road off Wingfield Court further back in the neighborhood
Neighbors on both sides of the street came together to form a road full of synchronized lights
and more–all lined up perfectly with music playing on the radio at 87.9 FM as you drive by the homes
It’s a beautiful site that’s equally impressive to kids and adults alike
The last house even has a place for families to drop off their letters to Santa
Between the Mountain Brook Baptist Church and Mountain Brook Village is a home that neighbors say reminds them of the dedicated work of Clark Griswold
Different inflatable Santas can be seen flying a helicopter
One Santa in an airplane has his own personal landing strips
In addition to these fun inflations is a lit-up deer that expresses greetings to a young neighbor so she is able to walk down and see it with her family–a fun tradition between two homes
As you make your way into Mountain Brook Village (which has its own fun lights)
you’ll see a multi-colored hue coming from Clubview Drive–we’d recommend you check it out
The Halsey family has set up an impressive display of colorful trees and other installations throughout their yard
Many other fun homes can be found around the area
We love seeing the bright lights on our own streets
and it connects neighbors in a way that often goes unspoken
like many others in Roebuck and nearby communities
features a medley of homes entwined with Christmas lights
who have a yard full of shining tributes to the merriest season of them all
and even a mechanical Santa that comes out to dance to Christmas music at night
When asked about the reason for bringing cheer to their neighborhood
We like to decorate because we like to share the spirit of the season and hopefully someone will see it and put a smile on their face or make them happy this time of year
my relatives that are no longer with us love to decorate and they are my inspiration every year
We will just enjoy sharing the spirit of the season and we celebrate Epiphany so our decorations and lights will still be on until the 5th of January and then we'll turn them on out
Perfectly spoken sentiments by kind-hearted Birminghamians
We hope everyone throughout the city is enjoying the creative light displays of their community
and we hope you are feeling a similarly warm glow yourself as we close out the year

NORTH SHELBY – Best Buy has officially opened a new store location in the Brook Highland Plaza shopping center on U.S
The electronics retailer held the grand opening for the store on April 2
which was the culmination of nearly a two-year relocation effort
who represented Best Buy during the transaction of the property
a partner with the Birmingham-based real estate firm The Canvass Group
said that his conversations with Best Buy about relocating the company’s U.S
The store was previously located in the River Ridge Shopping Center further down the highway near Target
but Burnett said Best Buy had been wanting to increase the company’s presence in the 280 area
which made Brook Highland Plaza the ideal location
Best Buy’s new store location spans 44,000 square feet
and was formerly a Dick’s Sporting Goods store
The new store is located near White House Interiors and HomeGoods
Burnett approached Best Buy about buying the property following the announcement that Dick’s Sporting Goods would be relocating
some other factors that Burnett said influenced the company’s decision to relocate to this location was the building’s additional space and expansive parking
He said the property’s layout will help accommodate the company’s in-person customer base
but also facilitate Best Buy’s “buy online
According to Burnett has become increasingly popular in recent years
they now have their own separate entrance for customers who have bought online and in-store
They also have more dedicated parking spots for those options as well,” he said
Burnett said the Shelby County area also played a role in the relocation
especially along Chelsea and the Highway 280 corridor
these areas have experienced massive growth over the past decade
making the area a keen market for retailers
Shelby County and southeast Birmingham is where I anticipate the most growth
for the city of Birmingham over the next 20 years,” he said
Burnett said Best Buy’s decision to relocate closer to these communities indicates that the company is making long-term investments in Shelby County
and that the company will likely continue to expand into the area for years to come
especially as Chelsea and other areas along U.S
“They want to continue to serve that customer
and when retailers this size make a decision like this
said the company’s new store location on 280 will give customers easier access and will provide a larger assortment of products
including an enhanced appliance section and a premium audio department
“We’re excited about our new store location and look forward to serving our customers in the Birmingham community,” she said

Birmingham’s second location of Ruby Sunshine has brought a variety of New Orleans-style brunch dishes to Brook Highland off U.S
NORTH SHELBY – After months of anticipation
a popular restaurant with Louisiana roots has brought New Orleans-style brunch dishes and morning cocktails to a new location in the Brook Highland community
Ruby Sunshine’s Brook Highland location is the second location to open in the Birmingham area in the last two years
with the first opening in Homewood in August 2019
Ruby Sunshine is a brand from Ruby Slipper Restaurant Group
the collective behind the New Orleans-based eatery Ruby Slipper Café
Ruby Slipper founder Jennifer Weishaupt said she and her team are excited about the location’s long-awaited opening after “a very long year.”
“Birmingham was on our radar as a market we thought we could add locations in,” Weishaupt said
noting the Homewood location exceeded their expectations
The wait ended this week for 280-area residents
and the restaurant used its opening as an opportunity to give back to the community
patrons were asked to donate $5 to Magic City Harvest
a perishable food recovery program serving the greater Birmingham area
“We are honored to be a part of this community,” Ruby Slipper Restaurant Group CEO Peter Gaudreau said
“Birmingham residents have welcomed us with open arms
and we’re excited to bring our famous benedicts
Bacon Bloody Marys and New Orleans-style brunch to a second Birmingham location
We’re also looking forward to spreading some holiday cheer by donating to a great local nonprofit
Ruby Sunshine’s menu also features BBQ Shrimp & Grits
Eggs Cochon Benedict and Bananas Foster Pain Perdu
along with morning-time cocktails like the Brandy Milk Punch
Weishaupt said the restaurant is known for its eight different benedicts that
with their homemade buttermilk biscuits and scratch-made hollandaise sauce
fall into the comfort food category and represent the bold flavors and unique combinations Ruby Sunshine incorporates into its dishes
The menu also includes plenty of options for those with a sweet tooth
Ruby Sunshine serves stuffed French toast and seasonal pancakes
such as white chocolate bread pudding pancakes
Weishaupt also raved about the restaurant’s burger with bacon onion jam
but Weishaupt said her company also wants to convey the concept of gracious hospitality and treat patrons like they are guests in someone’s home
“(We want to take) really good care of our staff so they can take really good care of our guests,” she said
taking care of people is at the core of the business
Weishaupt and her husband started Ruby Slipper Café in May 2008 in an effort to restore a sense of normalcy after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana and Mississippi
“It was really part of a post-Katrina rebuilding of our neighborhood,” Weishaupt said
“It was the idea that if we opened a breakfast brunch lunch café
it would be a nice gathering place for neighbors.”
With backgrounds in chemical and electrical engineering
Weishaupt and her husband were newcomers to the restaurant industry
“We went out on a limb with the hope that it would be a catalyst in rebuilding the neighborhood,” she said
we had stumbled upon something people were really interested in.”
the café had lines of customers out the door
‘When are you going to open another location?’”
they opened the second location in New Orleans’s central business district
Ruby Sunshine launched in 2019 in Franklin
The Brook Highland location represents the company’s 20th restaurant
Ruby Sunshine Brook Highland is located at 5243 U.S
NORTH SHELBY – The owners of two area Beef ‘O’ Brady’s restaurants are expanding their footprint in Shelby County with a new location on U.S
who own the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s locations in Helena and Hoover
are preparing to open a third location of the family sports restaurant and pub in the Brook Highland Plaza
The couple will open their newest restaurant in the building formerly occupied by The Boot at Brook Highland and Brook Highland Bar and Grill
George said opening another Beef ‘O’ Brady’s location was not in the couple’s plans
but a combination of factors created an opportunity they could not resist
“The building was reasonable to get into compared to building a new location from scratch,” George said
the company was offering incentives to current franchisees like the McCluneys to open new locations and create more internal growth in an effort to recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
“We’re looking forward to growing our family within the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s network and creating more jobs for Shelby County
They are currently renovating the building and installing new TVs and audio equipment
“Pretty much everything in there will be brand new,” George said
The restaurant will offer the full Beef ‘O’ Brady’s menu
Customers will be able to order anything from wings to sandwiches to burgers to tacos
“We refer to ourselves as a family sports pub,” George said
“We’re family friendly and will have an area to accommodate Little League ball teams.”
who also own Farrelly’s Southern Bar and Kitchen in Hoover
are aiming to open the Brook Highland location of Beef ‘O’ Brady’s by the end of August
depending on how quickly they can hire staff members

According to Captain Kevin Ross of the Medina County Sheriff's Office

Red Mountain Retail opens HomeStore in Birmingham
BESSEMER, Ala. — Red Mountain Retail
which owns and operates Ashley HomeStores in north and central Alabama
Located on Highway 280 in the Brook Highland shopping center
the store is moving into a space formerly occupied by Books-A-Million
it will be Red Mountain’s third HomeStore in the greater Birmingham area
And while at 24,000 square feet it will be Red Mountain’s smallest HomeStore
owner Woody Marks believes that sometimes less can be more
“It’s in such a high traffic area,” Marks said
“I think smaller is kind of better right now
will be a sweet spot for stores when you’re putting a bunch together.”
Marks noted that he had been eyeing this part of Birmingham and Jefferson County for some time
He said it’s around several other major retail brands in furniture and other consumer goods
“They made us an offer we couldn’t refuse in a location I’ve wanted to be in since I’ve had an Ashley franchise,” he said
It’s great visibility and a great front.”
Marks noted that the new HomeStore will add 14 to 16 to the workforce
it will help feed people during the holiday season as part of the company’s Basket Brigade campaign
We feed a bunch of people at Christmas,” he said
“There are 250 families that each store feeds
so that’s another 250 that will get fed
And once the new store in Birmingham comes online
Some of those will be replacing existing stores and adding another in the Huntsville market,” he said

ability to withstand harsh weather and high-quality beef
family-owned and operated business since 2006

Cullman County where the cattle are raised on open pasture
The highlands reap the benefits of being raised humanely on open green pasture with shaded areas for getting out of the sun
while consumers get the benefits of organic beef that is free of hormones or antibiotics
“We don’t confine them or overstock them to the extent that they need antibiotics to fight contagious disease from being too close
Some of our breeding herd are 17 years old this year and still producing a calf every year—that comes from slow but steady growth the way it was intended
Hormones are used to accelerate growth and increase feed efficiency; The results are fast growing animals that can’t survive in the herd due to structural insufficiencies
Cattle aren’t meant to be at market weight in 14 months
This can only be achieved with artificial means in both diet and additives
We don’t believe this is in the best interest of our cattle or our clients
we treat with appropriate antibiotics in conjunction with our veterinarian’s recommendation—we do not use antibiotics prophylactically ever.”
Grass-fed beef is also lower in both overall fat and saturated fat and has the added advantage of providing healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to consumers’ diet in much higher quantities than feedlot/corn-fed beef.

“We’ve definitely had to reinvent the wheel a few times transitioning from research to practical farming

Tracey and her husband decided to start the farm in Alabama because Stéphane’s work brought them to Birmingham
so Tracey searched for ways to fulfill her research background by owning cattle
my vocation as a dairy researcher was over
We didn’t live near any universities that do dairy research
Beef was perfect for us as we didn’t live on the farm when we got started
My husband recommended Highland cattle and when we did the research
they fit our situation perfectly.” After getting hooked on Highlands

They first began with heifers from Cube Mountain in New Hampshire
They purchased Black Watch Breagh Tighearnan from Frank and Liz Manafort to be their herd sire

you didn’t know Birmingham’s Cahaba Community was a thing
It’s made up of one neighborhood: an old coal-mining area called Overton
you’re going to want to visit because there’s a lot going on
This is the sixth in a 23-part series on Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods
Here’s my best shot at telling you where it is: most of it is South of I-20 (near Leeds)
The Cahaba community / Overton neighborhood is what’s left
Let’s look at what is in Birmingham’s Overton neighborhood
This is actually the only neighborhood in the Cahaba community
Bet you didn’t even know most of that was in Birmingham
According to Diamonds in the Rough: A History of Alabama’s Cahaba Coal Field
and Henry DeBardeleben named the coal town for Jesse M
the Nashville capitalist who financed the venture.” At one point there was quite a thriving community on both sides of Overton Road
2 made the front page of the New York Times
an explosion killed somewhere between 53 and 61 miners
They never did find out what caused the blast
The Overton mines and many others lie underneath this community
Much of the land has been reclaimed and put to new uses
as will the new location of the Southern Museum of Flight
some people enjoy being near the water—the Cahaba River or Lake Purdy
some people enjoy the convenience of being near the shops at The Summit or on 280
longtime locals remember when 280 was a country road
some like the country feel parts of the neighborhood provide
Restaurants on 280 and at The Summit are national chains
There you can stop in to Miss Myra’s Barbecue
This yellow house with a lakehouse feel is literally a stone’s throw from the Cahaba community
If you’re driving from 280 toward Cahaba Heights on Blue Lake Road
it’s on the right-hand side across from the lake
Have you considered a career in real estate? Flexible hours and unlimited income potential! Check out what Brik Realty’s looking for—maybe it’s you

Michael Randman and Tyler Bradford at Brook Highland Plaza
one of the new properties the company is leasing for real estate giant DDR Corp
The Birmingham News)Southpace Properties Inc.'s retail division has doubled the amount of retail space it's responsible for leasing and has added two new brokers to help the division with the added work
hired Southpace to handle leasing for Brook Highland Plaza on U.S
280 and Eastwood Festival Centre in Birmingham
two centers with a total of 1.3 million square feet of retail space
That brings Southpace's retail leasing portfolio to 2.6 million square feet
and officials said they would like to add more
"It's a growing part of Southpace's business
and we want to continue that," said Bryan Holt
a principal with the Birmingham-based commercial real estate firm
Holt said picking up the property listings from DDR
one of the largest retail real estate owners and developers in the country
was a direct result of the retail division's own internal expansion
Marcus Bruchis joined Southpace as vice president of retail services in October
Bruchis' 25 years of experience in the industry was mostly spent at Aronov Realty in Montgomery and as vice president of real estate for Hibbett Sports
the Birmingham-based retailer with more than 800 stores across the nation
Tyler Bradford joined the team earlier last year after working as director of leasing for Books-A-Million Inc.
another Birmingham-based retailer with a large store base
The new additions joined Southpace's existing retail real estate team of brokers Michael Randman and David Ashford
It was Bruchis who learned of DDR's willingness to tap an outside firm to handle leasing for the Birmingham properties
The new properties have a total vacancy of 17 percent
Brook Highland Plaza is the larger and stronger of the two at 89 percent occupancy
while Eastwood Festival Centre is 75 percent full
The largest vacant space at Brook Highland Plaza is one 21,000-square-foot space while Eastwood Festival Centre has some spaces between 12,000 square feet and 15,000 square feet that are vacant
The new properties and added brokers puts Southpace's retail operations in a position of strength
"It allows Southpace as a company to go after deals it didn't go after before," he said
Holt said that in the past Southpace's retail work was individual broker-driven with a broker having a listing and working almost alone to find a tenant
it is more of a team approach with new team members who have experience working for retailers
"It's much better than the silo program we were operating under for years," Holt said
Bruchis said the new approach is more like that of larger commercial real estate firms
"I believe there is much more we could end up doing with this," he said
"We're really just getting started."

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Michael TomberlinLeslie Scrushy waits for husband Richard Scrushy's civil trial to begin in May
Richard Scrushy is testifying in a deposition concerning the government's efforts to satisfy the $2.8 billion judgment in that case
(The Birmingham News / Joe Songer)Tax filings show Leslie Scrushy's pajama business lost hundreds of thousands of dollars from 2001 through 2004 and again in 2008
That was among the testimony in third day of Richard Scrushy's deposition
which resumed this morning in a federal courthouse in Birmingham
Scrushy also discussed how he met his third wife
how she came to work at HealthSouth and he loaned her money to buy a home in Brook Highland while the two were dating
Scrushy worked for Signature Flight Services in marketing when Scrushy said he first met her
He said she applied for a marketing position at HealthSouth and Scrushy was one of the interviewers and made the decision to hire her
HealthSouth attorney Chris Glenos asked Scrushy if he bought a home for Mrs
He said he loaned her the money for the Brook Highland home
"At the time she moved to Brook Highland were the two of you involved?" Glenos asked
"Were the two of you dating?" Glenos asked
"I don't know," Scrushy answered
Scrushy said Leslie's mother now lives in the Brook Highland house
He said one of his daughters moved into a house in the Eagle Point community on U.S
280 where Leslie lived before her Brook Highland move
The questions then focused on Uppseedaisees
Scrushy started after the two were married and she left HealthSouth
Scrushy said on Friday that Upseedaisees is paying his legal bills
which have cost him around $100 million since his legal troubles began in 2003
"Did you help her form Uppseedaisees?" Glenos asked
"Did you provide the capital to get her started?"
"I loaned her some money," Scrushy said
Glenos then presented a 2001 Upseedaisees tax filing that showed Scrushy owned 20 percent of the pajama company
"I didn't think I owned any of it and I don't believe I do today," Scrushy said
Glenos asked Scrushy if the tax returns show Uppseedaisees lost more than $243,000 in 2001 and then continued to show a loss in 2002
He said he did not have returns for 2005 and 2006
but that 2007 the returns showed a profit and in 2008 it lost around $100,000
Scrushy said a tax filing is not evidence of a company's actual profitability
they expense everything," Scrushy said
"It's your testimony in 2003 that Uppseedaisees made a profit?" Glenos asked
based on his understanding of accounting on an accrual basis
depreciation of assets and other factors are used in tax filings that are not used in everyday accounting
"People need to know the truth," Scrushy said
"This business was a profitable business."
chief executive was brought to Birmingham from his Texas prison cell to answer questions under oath
questions intended to discover the whereabouts of his fortune
It's an issue because Scrushy has been ordered to pay a civil judgment of $2.8 billion to HealthSouth for his role in an accounting fraud there
