Brooklyn (WABC) -- A shaken seven-year-old boy is recovering weeks after he was attacked by a pit bull while practicing on a baseball field at a Brooklyn park
Angel Sanchez has always dreamed of stepping onto the diamond one day for the Yankees
He lives for the sound of a home run leaving his bat
frequently practicing under the rumble of the J and Z trains in Thomas Boyland Park
what happened to him last month on the field became his nightmare
"I was bleeding and crying," Sanchez said
The Bushwick boy is covered in cuts and bruises from his lower back down to his thigh and legs
His cuts were so deep it took nine stitches to close them up
They're not injuries from rounding the bases or sliding into home plate
He remembers it like it was yesterday when the pit bull attacked him
I pushed it away but then it got me again and I screamed," Sanchez said
The father and son were practicing with Angel in right field and his father behind home plate
He sprinted to help his son when the dog approached
He says he grabbed the dog as hard as he could
then bit the dog in the neck to get him to release his son
Surveillance video showed the dog and its owner standing by the fence when the pit bull suddenly made a beeline for Angel
throwing punches at his own dog to get it to let go
Henry Sanchez says he thought the pit bull was going to kill his son
He says that after the owner tried to help
he simply left the scene and didn't seem to care
Police have been unable to locate that pit bull and its owner since the attack on April 14th
and doesn't want this to happen to anyone else

Looking through a windowless pane upon the month-old wreckage of their Brooklyn Park home
Ken Tobacman and Mary Butler watched as remnants of their home appeared in the rubble
and it starts to take shape,” Butler said on Tuesday
I find another piece of wreckage that looks familiar,” Tobacman added
The couple lived in the house on the 10700 block of Kyle Avenue North for 20 years until it was destroyed a month ago when a plane crashed into it
just after air traffic control lost contact with the pilot
The pilot, 63-year-old Terry Dolan
said controllers last heard from Dolan when they gave him clearance to land

Tobacman and Butler offered condolences to Dolan’s family in their first on-camera interview since the crash on Tuesday
as they pick up the pieces and work toward rebuilding
They lost their cat and everything but the clothes on their backs
their dog “Kaboom,” and to the many first responders
Tobacman was inside the house as the plane dove nose-first from the sky
I didn’t hear a plane,” he shared
“And I got around the corner towards where the bedrooms are
and the little pedestal bed that the cat liked to sleep on was in flames
There was no time to grab shoes or a coat; he just dashed for the door as 20 years of memories — and the roof under which they raised two daughters — turned to ash
it was really clear that the whole house was gone,” Tobacman said
what do you do when everything you have is suddenly in flames?”
after she returned from a walk with the dog
“There was nothing particularly miraculous about my getting out of the house
It’s just that’s where the plane hit
and I happened to be in the part of the house that didn’t go up right away,” Tobacman said
it feels an awful lot like a snuffing out of who you are,” Bulter shared
“…Because all of those stories
but the ability to walk through your house and just touch that memory
and that’s a loss that deserves some space for the grief that goes with it.”
“It’s not easy to lose your home and everything that you own and a portion of your life that’s not there anymore,” Tobacman said
in a position where I think we can make that happen… It’s just a hard job
not just from us but everybody around us as well.”
Their to-do list remained miles long on Tuesday
The couple spent the weekend buying up essentials for their rental home
They plan to rebuild on the site of their former home
The cost of the cleanup and constructing a new house has been estimated to exceed their insurance coverage limit
adding that it remains unclear how much of it they will be made whole for
The family set up a GoFundMe page for those wishing to help out

On Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a preliminary investigation report about the plane that crashed into a home in Brooklyn Park on March 31, killing the pilot
The report says that the pilot, 63-year-old Terry Dolan
contacted air traffic control at the Blaine airport to say he was inbound for runway 9
The traffic controller verified that Dolan had current weather information and gave landing clearance to runway 9
Dolan repeated back the landing clearance and said he had the weather conditions
the plane was inbound for the runway approach and began to descend
About four minutes after Dolan spoke to the controller
the controller contacted him again to give a low-altitude alert
the traffic controller tried again to contact Dolan
When the plane was beyond the final approach fix
Nearby residential doorbell camera footage also showed that the plane’s nose was pointed down
the aircraft hit trees and then crashed into the home and started on fire
The main wreckage of the plane was in the basement of the home it destroyed
Nearby broken tree limbs had angular cuts that were consistent with propeller strikes
The report also notes that no mechanical anomalies were found with the airframe or engine during the onsite examination or wreckage layout
no one who lived at the home or near the home was injured

Brooklyn Park unveiled a first-of-its-kind youth violence prevention team on Monday
The Community Intervention Team was established last year and has hit the ground running in the last couple of months
according to Community Intervention Manager LaTreasure Dickson
It’s largely modeled after efforts like the use of non-profit violence interrupter groups in Minneapolis
but the difference in Brooklyn Park is that the unit is housed within the police department
intervention and law enforcement don’t usually live in the same house
and so this is the first of its kind that we know of,” Dickson said
Asked how conversations of forming the unit began
and what I got was we had almost got to the point where we could predict crime
where we could predict the next person to be shot or be involved as a victim in some type of gun violence or group violence
and the Chief of Police as well as the Mayor and City Council decided that we needed to do something to step in.”
The team focuses on 25% of the city’s youth who are at “highest risk of being an offender or being a victim of violence.”
are creating 90% of crime in Brooklyn Park,” Dickson said
Khadija Frazier started as a youth and family intervention specialist for the unit in January
she receives a referral from the police and follows up with the family
“Some of my youth come from really harsh backgrounds
to be honest with you,” Frazier said
and I know that the kids that I work with today
they are facing very similar challenges that I did growing up,” she said
The resources that specialists help connect families include housing
“just to name a few,” Frazier shared
“We’re there to show you there’s another resource before a cop has to show up,” Dickson added
Dickson said the unit has unique and real-time access to case files and other police data about at-risk youth
but the work in their office does not inform police investigations
The unit is comprised of two youth and family intervention specialists
and eight incident intervention specialists
also known as “BP Voices.” They are the most public-facing staff members
responding to calls with officers if needed
only being out on the street for a month now.”
Fraizer said she was handling ten cases as of this report and noted a recent success with a girl she had been working with
who recently completed the first goal they set together
“Her SMART goal was to attend class on time and to show up for school every day
that’s easy.’ But to some people
it’s really not,” Frazier said.“It was just a big relief
is we specialize in consistency,” Dickson said
know that we’re there for you.”
The unit was paid for by state grant money as of this report
but Dickson said the hope is that it will eventually be fully funded by the city
this is a rare opportunity to envision great new places that add value to the community
