Rain in forecast by early Sunday | 5:20 p.m.Relief could be on the way to contain and extinguish the wildfire.
Moving into Saturday night, the National Weather Service forecasts a 60% chance of precipitation in Boiling Spring Lakes, amounting between half and three quarters of an inch. South wind is expected around nine miles per hour, with the possibility for gusts as high as 17 mph.
High winds are forecasted to continue Sunday, with a south wind forecasted between seven to 11 mph during the day, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Precipitation is more likely moving into Sunday, with a 90% chance of rainfall during the day, amounting between a half and three quarters of an inch.
Brunswick County Commissioner Mike Forte is currently at the incident command center in Boiling Spring Lakes. He said the fire has escaped its containment lines and is burning in both the city of Boiling Spring Lakes and unincorporated areas of Brunswick County.
Forte said the winds are gusting at 25 miles per hour, which is making it difficult for firefighters battling the blaze.
"You start to make a little headway, and then it starts swirling," he said.
He said the N.C. Forest Service is leading the firefighting efforts, and they are putting together a plan to dig "massive trenches" around a 4500-acre tract of wooded land to drive the fire into that controlled area and let it burn itself out.
"God bless these men and women," Forte said of the first responders.
He reported that at this time, no homes have been damaged, and no injuries have been reported. He said five blocks of Boiling Spring Lakes are under mandatory evacuation orders. He noted that on many of those streets, there are only a handful of homes. However, he said voluntary evacuation orders were issued for nearly 200 people living near the blaze.
Forte praised the response efforts, noting that crews from New Hanover, Pender, Horry (South Carolina), and Bladen counties were all on the scene.

MONCTON - A religious studies professor who in 2023 was fired from a faith-based university for alleged sexual harassment has filed a lawsuit against the New Brunswick institution, claiming wrongful dismissal, defamation and privacy breaches.
MONCTON - A religious studies professor who in 2023 was fired from a faith-based university for alleged sexual harassment has filed a lawsuit against the New Brunswick institution, claiming wrongful dismissal, defamation and privacy breaches.
In a statement of claim, John G. Stackhouse alleges Crandall University in Moncton conducted a fundamentally flawed investigation that resulted in the public disclosure of allegations that damaged his reputation and that of his wife, Sarah-Jane Britton — a former student at the school.
The investigation, conducted by the law firm Pink Larken, started in April 2023 after the university learned of anonymous social media posts accusing an unnamed school employee of inappropriate behaviour in 2020 and 2021.
In a summary of his findings, investigator Joel Michaud alleged that Stackhouse’s behaviour in the classroom included making sexist remarks and comments about people’s looks. In Michaud’s opinion, that behaviour constituted sexual harassment and bordered on abuse of authority.
As well, a review of dozens of emails found that Stackhouse engaged in “inappropriate banter” with an unnamed female student for seven months. The report quotes a response from Stackhouse acknowledging the emails were “inappropriate, unhealthy and unbecoming of a professor .... It cannot be defended.”
The claim goes on to say Michaud’s report wrongly alleges that like the other unnamed student, Britton was “sexually groomed” by the tenured professor while she was a student.
Michaud concluded the emails represented “a classic case of grooming.”
“He was in a position of responsibility as a professor and also as an employer of (the student) and, in the view of the investigator, engaged in behaviour that constitutes sexual harassment,” Michaud’s summary says.
Stackhouse was placed on paid leave in July 2023. After the investigator presented his findings to the university’s board of governors in November 2023, Stackhouse was dismissed.
The liberal arts university, founded in 1949 by the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada, has more than 1,400 students whose education is “firmly rooted in the Christian faith.”
Stackhouse’s statement of claim, which includes Britton as a plaintiff, was filed in February 2024. It says the professor “did not engage in any behaviour that constitutes just cause” for dismissal. As well, the document says he was never subjected to disciplinary action.
The claim says Michaud’s report wrongly alleges that when Britton was a student at the university, she was “sexually groomed” by the tenured professor.
In an affidavit filed last month with the Court of King’s Bench, Stackhouse confirmed that in the fall of 2022, he disclosed to the university that he was in a new relationship with a “former, mature part-time student,” later identified as Britton. At the time, the professor was in the process of getting a divorce from his first wife.
The document says Stackhouse and Britton had not started dating when she was enrolled as a student. And it says rumours about their relationship started circulating at the university in January 2023.
“Some students even complained to the administration, suggesting I was unfit to teach due to my relationship with a younger woman, although Ms. Britton was a divorced businesswoman and mother of four,” the affidavit says.
Stackhouse and Britton were married in the summer of 2023.
The professor’s affidavit says no formal complaints were filed against him under the school’s harassment policies. He alleges a faculty colleague was behind the anonymous social media posts that prompted the school’s administration to launch a “media-driven campaign” and investigation “seemingly designed to appease complainants and protect Crandall University’s image.”
The affidavit states that shortly after Stackhouse was fired on Nov. 22, 2023, the university posted a statement on its website confirming his termination and sharing a summary of Michaud’s findings, which included personal details and confidential information about an employment matter.
“The publication (of the findings) … exposed Dr. Stackhouse and Britton to contempt, ridicule and hatred and was deliberately calculated to lower (their) reputation in the estimation of right-thinking persons.”
“The malicious, high-handed and arrogant conduct of Crandall University warrants an award of punitive or exemplary damages to ensure that Crandall University is appropriately punished for its conduct.”
Stackhouse has since been unable to find new work as a professor, author, speaker or consultant, his statement of claim says. “The conduct of Crandall University was intended to cause harm to Dr. Stackhouse,” the claim says, adding that, as a professor, he was earning $126,860 annually.
In a statement of defence, the university alleges Stackhouse acknowledged that he needed to change the way he communicated with students in the classroom. The statement says the professor’s demeanour in class created an unwelcoming environment for certain female students. The statement says that in March 2023, the university received complaints about inappropriate comments in the classroom that included comments that were offensive to female students.
“Dr. Stackhouse ought to have known that his antics and sense of humour were unwelcome and unappreciated,” the statement says.
The statement of defence, filed on March 1, 2024, provides more details about the unnamed student who Stackhouse is accused of sexually grooming. It alleges the professor sent the student 78 emails, many of which included sexual connotations and described sexual fantasies.
As well, the statement says that Michaud’s investigation concluded that Crandall, as a Christian university, should be concerned by the fact that one of its professors had started a romantic relationship with someone who had recently been a student and while still legally married to someone else.
“Crandall maintains that it had just and sufficient cause to terminate Dr. Stackhouse’s employment, especially given its mission and values as a Christian-based university,” the statement of defence says.
As for assertions that Stackhouse and Britton were defamed, the university says it did not post anything on its website that was not true.
“Crandall submits that the post (on the website) made by Crandall was necessary and in the public interest,” the statement says. “It was important to share certain aspects of the (Michaud) report to ensure students and former students felt that their concerns were heard … and that Crandall was taking action.”
None of the allegations in the documents has been tested in court.

The blog post has served as a “catalyst” to get the message out and spark interest in having businesses consider locating in the uptown centre, said Turner.
“We’re trying to remind people how strategically positioned it is, the pedestrian traffic, daily tourists, locals just navigating their way around, workers who work in the nearby office towers and it’s a bit of a captive audience there that we feel is underserved,” she said.
Turner added the timing to revitalize Brunswick Square is good with current major developments in the uptown that place the shopping centre in an even more strategic location. She pointed to the development at 99 King St. and the Fundy Quay development as providing not only a “renewed energy” in the uptown but also more residents who will be calling those developments home in the future, residents who will need places to shop.
While it’s still “the early days” of looking for new tenants there have been some successes, Turner said. Dots Event Planning has secured a lease on the pedway level and will soon open a vibrant storefront, including with a children’s entertainment centre featuring arcade-style games, ride-on plush toys, and a birthday party room.
“We also have toured some of the office space and we do have a tenant that is very close to signing on the atrium level,” she said. “It’s not official so I can’t disclose who that is, but it should be coming out very soon.”
Turner said there are “a lot of vacancies” in the building and she’s hoping to see it return to it’s previous state, which included myriad businesses ranging from clothing, book, music and other retailers. That incarnation of Brunswick Square, she said, met a “perfect storm” of varying factors.
Cindy Alcorn, manager of Cricket Cove, a yarn and knitting store that has called Brunswick Square home for about 15 years, said she’s happy to hear there’s now a more concerted effort to bring the shopping centre back to life. She recalled, fondly, how busy the site was years ago and the camaraderie among the many merchants that once operated in the building.
“Brunswick Square, I’ve said for years, when we were full, we were like a family,” said Alcorn. “The merchants looked out for one another. The merchants were concerned about what was happening in people’s lives. They were very helpful and it was more than just a job, it was a community.”
Like Turner, Alcorn said people need to embrace the uniqueness Brunswick Square offers as it play a major role in Saint John’s pedway system. She pointed to the fact people can travel from the waterfront straight through to the market without ever having to step outside. On days of inclement weather, she said, that’s important. And in the heart of that pedway, she said, is Brunswick Square.
“When Brunswick Square was full…. Oh, I’d love to see that again,” she said. “We’ve been through thick and thin. We’ve seen multiple changes. It was just a hub and a busy time here and now…. I want to see it busy again. I’ve said for years I’d love to see an uptown medical clinic here on the third floor. If they wanted to put a grocery store down on the first floor… There’s a lot of things that they could do to make it a going centre again.”

and giving Spotswood (6-9) a brief lead in the top of the seventh by igniting a two-out rally with a double
later scoring on a single to right by Juliana Ziegler
But the Bears’ resiliency has been a trademark of its splendid campaign
and their ability to respond was a key factor in Saturday’s outcome
East Brunswick answered Hill’s solo shot by scoring twice in the bottom of the third
and scored on Christina Lee’s first of three singles
Spotswood knotted the score in the top of the fifth inning on Hill’s run-scoring single
after DiStefano successfully bunted with two strikes
but the Bears responded once again as Rachel Gerould stroked a lead-off triple and scored on D’Liah Kercado’s single up the middle
there are kids who seek the big at-bat,” said Brady
the outs get harder to make when you know it’s closing up the game
Getting that third out is a mental and physical challenge that the special ones always get.”
Spotswood tied the score in the sixth as Reese Cunningham doubled and scored on a single by freshman pinch-hitter Gabby Sannwaldt
Gay then crossed the plate with the winning run on another grounder by Munoz
Spotswood received an impressive pitching performance from senior Lily Cunningham
who has taken over in the circle for All-Area selection Ava Mormile
Mormile is sidelined indefinitely with a foot injury
Though these teams are no longer competing in the same division
the victory had special meaning for the Bears
who had lost six in a row to their nemesis and hadn’t defeated the Chargers since 2021
The Bears (14-1) had a much easier time in its second game of the day
striking for seven runs in the first inning against their injury-depleted in-town rival
Lee continued her scorching day by going 5-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs to finish the afternoon with hits in eight consecutive at-bats
The freshman improved her record to 4-0 with a three-hitter
striking out nine of the first 10 batters she faced and hitting the other
She wound up striking out 10 without issuing a walk
East Brunswick got contributions from up and down its roster
as Emma Turzani doubled twice and Hailey Brenes contributed a double and a triple
East Brunswick Magnet (4-10) played the game without its regular battery of pitcher Bella Serronico and catcher Makayla Caban
Serronico was struck in the face by a line drive while playing third base in the Tigers’ early game against Carteret
while Caban has an injured thumb and was limited to serving as designated player

Fire crews from multiple agencies continued Monday to battle a 1,500-acre wildfire in coastal Brunswick County
The fire that began Friday afternoon and spread Saturday as it skipped over containment lines in the area of Boiling Spring Lakes had been contained by 10% by Monday morning, according to the North Carolina Forest Service
Containment refers to sections of fire line that do not pose a risk of spreading without the need additional firefighting measures
Brunswick County and Boiling Spring Lakes have declared states of emergency
“We’re taking advantage of the rain that came in this morning to really work the dry areas around the fire,” Forest Service Operations Section Chief Jonathan Ambrose said in a Sunday release
“The dozer crews are steadily churning up the soil and reinforcing single fire lines to multiple lines in hopes of stopping or slowing the spread of the fire.”
No homes have been destroyed in the wildlife
and the American Red Cross shelter set up a local high school had closed
The wildfire prompted the call for a temporary flight restriction
on aircraft from the ground up to and including 3,000 feet until further notice

food and drink donations were no longer needed as of Sunday in Boiling Spring Lakes
A burn ban remained in effect Monday for unincorporated areas of the county. Burning within 100 feet of a structure is prohibited in those areas. Residents in municipalities should contact their city or town office to inquire about burn bans in their area
Motorists are asked to use caution if traveling the N.C. Highway 87 corridor and other roads in the Boiling Spring Lakes area as fire engines and large equipment remain in the area. Updates of area road closures are available online
A Code Orange air quality alert has been issued for the country through midnight Monday. Air quality updates for the county are available at airnow.gov
Closures and shelter information will be provided on Brunswick County’s website as information becomes available

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- On Friday, May 16, 2025, the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra presents Our City
Come celebrate the rich musical tapestry of our area at this full orchestral concert highlighting local cultures
The American experience is reflected in Aaron Copland's iconic “Appalachian Spring.” “Under the Night Sky in the Philippines
Our lively Hispanic scene is the focus of the wildly popular
flamboyant composition “Danzón number 2” by Arturo Márquez
a pair of hand drums with an amazing range percussive effects
highlights the richness of the Asian culture in Eric Watson’s “Dialogue for Tabla and Orchestra.” An enriching event not to be missed
There is a $5 discount for ticket purchaces online. Online Tickets are $15 Students. $20 Seniors, and $25 Adults. To purchase tickets, click here
Nicholas Music Center is located at 85 George Street in New Brunswick
In order to present classical music in a different and exciting way that expands and explodes the conventions of the genre, the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra offers a new vision
It’s called "Reframing Classical Music." Our goal is to redefine the "norms" of classical chamber music
They begin by programming their concerts around a specific theme or idea
The New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra performs music that matters
whether it was written in the Middle Ages or sometime next year
in the heart of Old Europe or the new conservatories of East Asia
Since its founding a over half century ago
the group has evolved into a professional ensemble of 16 to 26 musicians that tackles some of the biggest assignments possible for chamber orchestras
Its repertoire runs the gamut from Handel’s “Messiah” and Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” to John Adams' "Shaker Loops" or Mohammed Fairouz’ “Named Angels”
Under the direction of their Artistic Director
the orchestra’s focus is on balance: presenting the full-spectrum of classical music from timeless masterworks to works by living composers
In collaboration with the Composers Guild of New Jersey
they anticipate the world premiere of a major new work every year along with a smaller piece by an emerging composer
The New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra likes a challenge
exciting music that stretches performers and surprises audiences
In recent seasons the ensemble has tackled Sebastian Currier’s “Next Atlantis” for string orchestra and the recorded sounds of post-Katrina New Orleans
Arvo Pärt’s haunting “Fratres” and Astor Piazzola’s rollicking new classic “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires”
Pieces that are vital and relevant that connect with our audience
The orchestra is a mobile ensemble as comfortable at a local church as in the historic State Theatre or the intimate Crossroads stage. Throughout the year, or principle players from into chamber groups to perform breakout recitals at Rutgers’ Zimmerli Art Museum
The Tavern at East Jersey Old Towne Village and other alternative spaces in New Brunswick
The orchestra calls this initiative “Reframing Classical Music” because it seeks a deeper connection to the visual and plastic arts
And the NBCO has had thrilling collaborations in recent seasons with nearby dance troupes and choral groups
A burn ban is in effect on Saturday for unincorporated areas of Brunswick County as authorities on the coast continue battling a massive wildfire at Boiling Spring Lake
all burning within 100 feet of any structure is prohibited within unincorporated areas
The town of Leeland also issued a burn ban within town limits
The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office said nearly 800 acres have burned
and the North Carolina Forest Service lists the fire as is 0% contained
and we are grateful for the dedication of every agency involved," said the sheriff's office on Facebook
which started on Friday in the area of West Boiling Spring Road and Sunset Road in Brunswick County
has grown exponentially in the last 24 hours
In an update Friday night
Brunswick County officials said the fire was as big as 200 acres and was considered “100% contained," but dry air and brisk winds helped rekindle the fire
One family said they were forced to evacuated Friday night
and their hopes of returning Saturday were dashed as the fire picked back up
"We were really hoping to get home tonight
it might make sense to continue to have a slumber party over at some family's house," said Nick and Rocky Losasso
Brunswick County and Boiling Spring Lakes both declared a state of emergency due to the fire
and the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office said evacuations are in place for some areas
Authorities are investigating how the fire started
A shooting in Brunswick County has left one dead and another with injuries
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a death and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to seriously injure incident that occurred late Sunday night
is being treated for injuries at a local hospital
according to a news release from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office
there is no suspect at large and no danger to the public
This is an active and ongoing investigation

As newer commercial businesses come into Brunswick County
existing strip malls with vacancies are trying to compete
Several new strip malls have been built in Brunswick County over the past five years
existing strip malls are fighting to stay relevant
Both beach and some inland towns in Brunswick have a variety of shopping centers and small strip malls scattered throughout
Wilson Glasgow is a leasing agent for Aston Properties out of Charlotte
which has a few storefronts ready to be leased in the Shallotte Crossing Shopping Center
Some strip malls have "anchor tenants," Glasgow explained
Anchor tenants are big-box grocery or retail stores that bring a lot of foot traffic
Belk and Home Depot are the two big anchor stores for Shallotte Crossing Shopping Center
Stuart Davidson is a leasing agent through Mark Properties for both Twin Creek Plaza in Shallotte and Live Oak Village near Southport
LoopNet.com states Twin Creek Plaza was built in 1984
Simple maintenance and routine work to keep the facilities intact and functional is important
"Everything doesn't have to be a 2017 shopping center
Just because it's an older center doesn't mean it looks old or is run down," he added
More on retail development: The latest on Biscuitville, Walmart, Dollar Tree and other Brunswick projects
there are some commercial spaces that have been empty for years
Lowes Foods and CVS used to be the main anchors of Live Oak Village
a new Lowes Foods was built across the street in 2020 as an anchor to a larger shopping center
CVS also relocated to its own building in the same area
A few years after Lowes Foods left Live Oak Village
Owners will sometimes cold call local businesses and local brokers to see if business owners are interested in relocating or opening a new storefront
When it comes to having a lot of vacancies
both Glasgow and Davidson said it is up to the property owners to continue seeking tenants or sell the entire property
New shopping centers are being built all over the county
Leland currently has seven major grocery stores
Aldi and a Walmart Supercenter are all located along U.S
The town also has a Piggly Wiggly and two Food Lion locations
Site plans for the Savannah Branch Town Center shopping center
headed by Branch Properties and Columbia Properties
include a new Publix grocery store along U.S
would be roughly 17 acres and have 10 storefronts and two outparcels
The website indicates plans for a Grand Nails salon and an EmergeOrtho clinic
A Publix and a Walmart are being built in Carolina Shores along U.S
Both grocery store chain plans include additional commercial space and large parking lots
Shopping centers and grocery stores in St. James and Boiling Spring Lakes are also in the early phases of discussion and planning
More development news: More than 100 restaurants and bars opened in the Wilmington area in 2024. See the list.
Over 100 acres of commercial space in Boiling Spring Lakes is up for grabs along N.C
87 while less than 15 acres of commercial property in St
211 is being proposed for commercial development
James is looking at a development called Harbor & Canal
which would feature a grocery store and other retail space
The approximate 14-acre commercial area is expected to be built between the town hall complex and Generations Church alongside N.C
Nine commercial outparcels are outlined in the conceptual master plan
The outparcels range from 1.35 acres to 2.25 acres and line N.C
A popular anchor in a strip mall could cause higher lease prices compared to shopping centers that do not have a "big anchor," Glasgow said
1,600 square feet could cost $25 a square foot
This price would be the yearly cost to rent the space out
The Marketplace at Waterford in Leland also has several 1,800-square-foot vacant spaces leasing for $32 per square foot per year
where the newer Lowes Food near Southport is located
prices outparcel lots at $1,005,882.35 an acre
As Brunswick County continues to see rapid residential growth
people can expect to see more commercial development as well
"The population growth certainly correlates with more retail development and commercial development as a whole," Glasgow said

state lawmakers might finally green-light a new rail trail
This thing could be a game-changer for both fun and your wallet
and Androscoggin rivers with a sweet stretch of trail that’s perfect for biking
or just breaking in your new Brooks sneakers
lawmakers on the transportation committee gave a big ol’ thumbs-up
The ball’s now in the court of the full state Legislature
and the fate of this trail is literally hanging by a thread
To swap out the old Lower Road railroad tracks
tracks that haven’t been used since the '80s
the rail’s still got some life left in it for the future
The newspaper is reporting that advocates of this project have been trying to get this moving since 2008 and now
thanks to recent action in the Legislature
the Merrymeeting Trail is closer to reality than ever
But don’t break out the champagne, errr Allen's, just yet because there’s still a major fundraising uphill battle ahead. And, of course, not everyone’s on board. The Kennebec Journal says some folks think passing this bill could block trains from coming back to the area and killing the economic boost they bring
and there’s still a wild card with all this
they could totally derail (pun intended) the whole trail plan
So are we really that much closer to a much longer 'Kennebec River Rail Trail'
Most people would agree that 'yes'
though there are still some decent-sized hurdles that need clearing

More on Varnamtown: Former Brunswick town mayor, and one of the state's longest serving, has died

She noted the town only has one ramp and dock that was constructed for smaller vessels
traffic revolving around Varnamtown's boat ramp increased because of the free parking
Parrish said complaints from citizens and business owners pushed the town to find a solution
"With larger boats and a growing number of boaters using our ramp
it has led to problems with constant damages to the floating dock and the ramp," Parrish said
"It has also led to problems with traffic backing up down the road blocking the local fish houses and several roads and driveways."
On April 17, the town of Varnamtown announced on Facebook that it will implement paid parking starting May 5 and ending Oct
The town will be using SurfCAST by OTTO Connect for its paid parking services
Only boat ramp use parking will be pay to park
Daily parking passes for truck and trailers will be $40 and cars will be $20
"The parking lot at the corner of Fisherman Road and Old River Road will be designated for Varnamtown property owners only," the town's Facebook post states
The parking lot across the road from 32 Fisherman Road will be a visitor paid parking lot
the announcement states cars hauling trailers can only turn around in town parking lots
not business parking lots nor private driveways
Where does the money go?Income collected from paid parking will be used to help with maintenance on the parking lots and boat ramp
Property owners are allowed one free permit per season for each parcel they own
The parking lot located at the corner of Fisherman Road and Old River Road is designated for Varnamtown residents
