Wire grill brushes are tried-and-true workhorses for cleaning your grates
But they might come with a caveat: If precautions aren’t taken
errant wire bristles could potentially wind up in your food
A pediatric emergency medicine physician also raised the concern in a viral TikTok video
which has amassed over 43 million views since February 2023
To reduce the risk of accidentally ingesting a bristle
always wipe your grill with a wet rag after using a wire brush
There are steps you can take to reduce the risk of ingesting errant wire bristles
Lesley said she developed a three-step method while working in a professional kitchen
while the grill grates are at their hottest
use a wire grill brush to remove caked-on food
using tongs to remove any soot or food that’s turned to carbon
wipe down the grates with a clean paper towel and some vegetable oil (to lubricate them)
You can also eliminate remaining grill-brush wires by using one of our recommended alternatives (below) after you’ve scraped your grill
there is a slight risk of a wire bristle getting in your food
But you should inspect your brush before each use
Cleaning writer Caroline Mullen advises giving the brush a firm shake to see if any bristles fall off — a definite sign that it’s time to get a replacement
Caroline recommends replacing your wire grill brush each year (depending on how often you use it)
especially if it’s been stored outside over the winter
since snow and rain can corrode these brushes
If you’d rather forgo wire grill brushes altogether
you can use one of these wire-free options
they are just as effective as wire-bristle grill brushes
This wooden grill paddle is the best wire-free grate cleaner we’ve tested
The beveled edge takes on the pattern of your grill
so it becomes a custom scraper that hugs the grates
tapered edge takes on the pattern of your grill’s grates as you scrape along them while they’re still hot
It takes some practice to break in this wooden shovel
you’ll need to exert sufficient pressure to create deeper grooves that really hug your grates
you can’t use this tool on multiple grills
unless they all have the exact same grill-grate pattern
So this paddle is less versatile than a wire grill brush and the other options we’ve included in this list
These long-lasting scrubbers effectively tackle tough
In our guide on how to clean a grill
Lesley recommends pairing the scrubber with 12-inch tongs
It’s abrasive enough to rival a wire grill brush
but it’s not as likely to leave traces of metal bristles behind
you should first inspect your grill’s grates to check for any stray pieces
A wadded-up ball of aluminum foil can work in a pinch
we strongly advise against lining your grill with aluminum foil (to catch grease) or using it as a tarp over the grill grates (to help burn off stuck-on food bits)
These actions could void your grill’s warranty — and they’re just dangerous
won’t cover what they call “burn-through” damage
which is damage caused by excessive heat exposure (such as from a grease fire)
This powerful scrubber easily tackles stuck-on messes without scratching the inside of your grill
and they’re ergonomically suited to effective scrubbing
and terrific for deep cleaning and getting into a grill’s hard-to-reach nooks and crannies
“It’s tough enough to remove stuck-on grease
but it won’t damage the more delicate parts of your grill,” said Lesley
who often relies on scouring pads when she’s cleaning grills
Caroline’s testing also confirmed that the Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge is a reliable grill-cleaning tool
She said she used it to deep-clean and scrub away built-up burger grease after a week’s worth of consistent grilling
use the wooden tool to dislodge any stuck-on pieces
use the sponge and soapy water to scrub any remaining gunk off of the grates
This pad brush is the best one for steam cleaning
Made with the same fabric found in firefighters’ gear
it can be plunged into water and wiped over a hot grill
But as a secondary cleaner — and to wipe away any lingering wire bristles from a wire-brush scrubbing — this sponge-like brush efficiently clears away soot and loose debris. It is also sturdy, and it has an ergonomic, plastic handle. Marilyn Ong, Wirecutter’s senior kitchen editor, has been using hers for two summers
and the steam helps to soften any leftover food
This abrasive block of pumice can remove rust and corrosion from a griddle that’s been left out in the elements
To restore a grill that’s been rusted or corroded
consider using a grill stone — a block of coarse pumice stone (yep
the same material that’s used for exfoliation)
we found that grill stones work best when they’re run under water before they’re used on a hot grill
but they can also be used dry and on cool grills
Although a grill stone’s wide, flat surface works well on griddles, we found that this wasn’t the most effective way to clean cast-iron or stainless steel grill grates. A grill stone is meant to mold to the shape of your grill grates. But it requires outsize effort over several cleaning sessions to get it there, even with heat and water.
During testing, we also found that the grill stone left dust and debris on the grates. So after you use your grill, we recommend that you wipe it with a wet rag or one of the other wire-grill-brush alternatives on this list.

To keep your grill in working order, take time to do some simple cleaning tasks, as well as the occasional deep scrub-down, every time you cook.
To keep your grill ready for summer cookouts, cleaning is essential but tremendously annoying. This durable grill brush makes steam cleaning surprisingly easy.
You can’t keep sponges forever! Here’s how to know when to toss them.

For many, grilling is the easiest type of cooking
Most minds might go to accidental fires or painful burns when grilling hazards get brought up
but one pediatric emergency doctor shared a different hazard in a recent viral video
the doctor describes a scenario in which a small child needed emergency surgery to remove a wire that had been dislodged from a wire grill brush and became stuck in the throat area

Wire grill brushes have long been a small part of making the most of the summer grilling season
Cleaning food debris off the grill grate is essential for preventing fires and maintaining the integrity of your food's flavor
cases like the one described in the video of wire bristles causing bodily harm occur when the wire breaks away from the brush and settles onto the grate
this piece of metal can make its way into your food
The bristles are thin and can be difficult to detect
bristles from wire grill brushes were responsible for over 1,600 internal injuries that led people to the emergency room
over 130 emergency room visits are because of ingesting a bristle from a wire grill brush
While most injuries occur in or around the mouth
there have been cases of severe gastrointestinal perforations as well

ExpandBlack smoke fills the sky during a brush fire in Island Lake Sunday
Over 100 acres burned in a brush fire that erupted Sunday in Island Lake and sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation
The fire did not start out as a controlled burn
The Wauconda Fire District said in a news release late Sunday it had been called out to the intersection of Route 176 and Bassler Drive in Island Lake around 5:34 p.m
Crews observed a “large plume of heavy black smoke” in transit and arrived within three minutes to find a “significant active fire” in a field in the McHenry County Conservation District jurisdiction
Firefighters immediately upgraded the fire to a grass fire to bring more resources to the scene
crews upgraded to a first alarm brush fire box and later requested the Lake and McHenry County Wildland Team to the scene
and surrounding neighborhoods were not found to have any damage
though the wildland team stayed on site to “address dead trees in the area,” according to the release
The department estimated over 100 acres “were involved in the fire.”
The Wauconda Fire District confirmed Sunday evening on Facebook that it was working on a brush fire that “has been elevated to a box alarm” and said nobody needed to evacuate.
Wauconda Fire District investigators are investigating the cause of the fire, which “remains undetermined,” according to the release.
The conservation district released a statement saying the fire occurred in the Cotton Creek Marsh and that there was no reported damage to “personal property.”
“The Conservation District is assisting local fire and police as they investigate the cause of the fire. No controlled burns by District staff or Volunteers were scheduled for Sunday, and the source of the fire remains unknown at this time,” the district said.
Firefighters from around Lake and McHenry counties continued to battle a large brush fire that sparked in Island Lake Sunday evening
Multiple 9-1-1 calls came in at about 5:35 p.m
Sunday and scanner reports were that people could see heavy smoke and fire at Route 176 and Bassler Drive
Command immediately requested a Mutual Aid Box Alarm (MABAS) for additional resources to the scene
The cause of the blaze and whether there are any injuries are unknown at this time
Fire department increased the MABAS call to a second alarm
bringing in additional resources like All-Terrain Vehicles and Wildland Technicians
and Long Grove are reported to have been called to the scene
There are no evacuations in place at this time

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) - In an effort to combat dangerous wildfires as temperatures start to rise, beginning Thursday, May 1 through July 31, the Palm Springs Fire Department will begin annual brush removal of 87 acres that cover 27 potential wildfires zones, determined by a recent Cal Fire fire hazard severity map
Removal started in the Little Tuscany neighborhood, which officials say has seen the most brush fires in Palm Springs. Just last year, News Channel 3 reported on a fire on the hillside near the community
“This is one of my most impacted areas by brushfires so it makes sense as fire chief to get after the area that we’ve had the most fires.”
Firefighters and City workers will spend the next few months trimming trees and removing potentially hazardous brush that could spark a wildfire
the Palm Springs Fire Department will begin public education asking residents who live in wildfire zones to help clear hazardous brush from 1,254 residential lots located in neighborhoods on the west and south sides of the city
