What I’ve learned is that Buda can be a choose-your-own-adventure type of town; you just have to know where to look.  I did the hard of work of staycationing and experiencing what a weekend might look like for visitors and locals alike I tried my best to look beyond the usual spots you’d find on a typical tourism website I explored outside the city’s boundaries to spotlight creative and scrappy businesses in Buda’s extraterritorial jurisdiction that might have otherwise gone unnoticed My goal was to curate a menu of opportunities that will delight both locals and visitors whether you’re in the mood for something a little bit Texan Many local businesses close once or twice a week Just north of downtown, the 59-acre City Park is home to a playground, walking paths, and an amphitheater where events are held year-round. It’s also the home of the Budaful Farmers Market, held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. Nearby Garison Memorial Park is under construction though it’s open to the public in the meantime The former private estate has more than a mile of trails and direct access to Onion Creek for fishing or paddling sports though you’ll need to bring your own kayak for now.  On Buda’s east side, game enthusiasts should check out Pinballz Kingdom, a beer tavern and arcade that has laser tag, bumper cars, and the occasional traveling circus. A little farther east is Doc’s Drive In Theatre three themed tiny vacation houses available for rent The theater hosts special events and screenings of family-friendly favorites such as Back to the Future and The Grinch Weekend brunch at Brooklyn’s Down South never disappoints. The shrimp and grits, pancakes, and huevos divorciados are all frequent picks in my household, along with a mimosa flight. A few doors down, at Taste on Main we shared oysters and appetizers and regretted not sitting out on the courtyard patio.  The Buda Drug Store and Soda Fountain is a locally owned pharmacy and cafe offering coffee There’s something so deliciously simple about the chicken salad sandwich and the Italian cream sodas delight my inner child.  one of three food truck options on the premises.  which is located in the original town bank Today the vault serves as a cigar humidor.  Across the street is the Inspired Minds Arts Center which took over the city’s old municipal building and converted it into an art studio and theater The art center is open most afternoons and offers a full schedule of classes including some that welcome drop-ins.  Every Sunday, you’ll find the Budaful Farmers Market under the shaded pavilion of nearby City Park everything you’d expect to see at a local market is there: grass-fed beef There’s a block of your average 3.5-star chain hotels for those who seek the comforts of the familiar or would like to collect or redeem hotel points. And why not? In this economy? You do you. But if you’re looking for something that’s close to downtown and offers access to nature and Onion Creek, consider Marks Overlook Lodge Four cabins are available for rent on the property and there’s plenty of opportunity for water recreation.  A country girl myself, I chose to retreat to Sage Hill Inn & Spa The 88-acre property has twenty luxury cottages and casitas It’s only twenty minutes from Buda’s center We lost GPS signal and missed the entrance but then we turned around and took a mile-long single-lane road and mature trees until we finally reached the circular driveway by the guest parking lot I was immediately struck by the view: the ranch houses the pool deck overlooking acres of Onion Creek and the Texas Hill Country and glimpses of little trails that disappeared behind the trees nor any music blasting at the pool—ah According to the Texas A&M Forest Service Incident Viewer the Onion Creek Fire was 100% contained as of 7:23 p.m on Thursday and burned a total of 190 acres The 150-acre Onion Creek fire in Hays County is under control Texas A&M Forest Service said the fire is 90% contained "Thanks to the outstanding teamwork on the ground there was no loss of life or property," Becerra said "A dozer line was established overnight to contain the fire and Onion Creek served as a natural barrier to stop its progression crews are continuing mop-up efforts to ensure everything remains secure." BUDA — Multiple crews are still working on battling a fire in the Onion Creek area of Buda The fire in Buda is north of Indian Hills Trail west of Story Drive and north of Onion Creek — north of 150 south of 967 and west of 2770 — according to the Hays County Office of Emergency Management This comes after there were anticipated high winds of 25-35 mph sustained A Red Flag Warning was also issued by the National Weather Service across all of South-Central Texas from 8 a.m Tuesday and a Wind Advisory issued across all of South-Central Texas from 9 a.m now 190-acre fire is sitting at 90% containment Texas A&M Forest Service public information officer and crews are continuing to work on the mop-up of remaining hot spots “Our crews are going to keep on working today putting in the  containment line … and they were at a point where they could leave it for a few hours They got some rest and they’re back out this morning,” Moran said “[The crews are] going to continue putting in line with bulldozers and we have a strike team of engines as well as several local fire [agencies] out here helping out.” There were evacuations issued on Tuesday because of the fire Moran said that there are no structures threatened or damaged and no injuries have been reported in relation to the Onion Creek fire There was also another fire the same day that occurred near Engelke Road in Kyle led to evacuation notices being temporarily issued The nearly 11-acre fire was contained at approximately 9 p.m said Travis County Fire Rescue Fire Marshal Jeremy Trahan “The biggest concern for us was obviously the high winds We were tracking close to 40 mile per hour wind gusts when that fire initially hit,” Trahan said since we had a fast-moving fire like that.” To find up-to-date information on the status of the Onion Creek fire, visit www.inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/txtxs-onion-creek-fire.
