(WKBW) — An Illinois man has been indicted on new charges that allege he kidnapped a child from a Buffalo Public School
the 30-year-old man arrested in February following the incident at Dr
Buffalo Police SVU Detective Richard Hy said on the Unsubscribe Podcast that Cronin had attempted to kidnap two children at the school
police had initially said he approached one child and assaulted an assistant principal
Detective Hy also told 7 News that there's much more to the story
He said that Cronin tried to abduct two children
but the school never told the boy's family about the abduction attempt against him
WATCH: Buffalo Police SVU Detective Richard Hy recently appeared on a popular YouTube podcast and accused Buffalo Public Schools officials of failing to protect children from abuse and even obstructing investigations by police
Following the claims made by Detective Hy on the Unsubscribe Podcast and on 7 News
the Buffalo Board of Education held a special meeting and responded to the allegations
saying it will conduct an independent external investigation
"The Board of Education takes allegations about the well-being of our students seriously," said Board President Dr
"The BOE is initiating an independent external investigation and the results will be shared publicly."
Cronin has been remanded without bail since the incident. He's expected in court later this week.

Buffalo is reviving a hard drive design from 1998 that reveals its inner workings
by Andrew Liszewski
The Skeleton Hard Disk mounts a 4TB drive inside a machined aluminum housing with a small window attached to a display base weighing about 3.3 pounds
Its gold and anodized black finish is an homage to a retro Melco (Buffalo’s parent company) record player
you’re probably not going to be able to squeeze the HD-SKL into a gaming PC without reaching for an angle grinder
and features a power connector on the back as well as one of those USB 3.2 Micro-B ports that’s wider and flatter than a standard USB-A port
If you’d rather not wait for the drive to come to life while moving data to or from it
Buffalo has an accompanying piece of software called SeekWizard (for Windows users only
although the HD-SKL works with both PCs and Macs) that will make its read arm move in various patterns
These include modes simulating regular movements while the drive is accessing data
or making it function like a ticking metronome or a timer
but making the drive perform for you at will may be one of the reasons Buffalo only lists a one-month warranty
Sabres.com is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1974-75 season
which saw the Sabres advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history
the 1974-75 Sabres earned 113 points and boasted six 30-goal scorers – still one of just three teams in NHL history to accomplish that feat
to me personally and I think the guys who played on that team
the birth of hockey here in Buffalo," Danny Gare said
that year was the year that it escalated to being a legitimate National Hockey League team."
Originally compiled from interviews during the franchise’s 50th season in 2019-20
the series collects thoughts from 12 alumni who played during the franchise’s thrilling first decade: Rene Robert
Before we discuss the 1974-75 Buffalo Sabres
we need to address how the franchise became a Stanley Cup contender a mere five years after its inception
Imlach arrived in Buffalo with four Stanley Cups on his resume and a chip on his shoulder
After being fired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in spring 1969
A Sports Illustrated feature from November 1970 reported that Imlach had his picture placed in large advertisements in the Toronto Telegram
seeking to lure fans from his former club down the QEW to root on the Sabres
(It's the sort of petty creativity one might expect from a man who
fed up with the lengthy nature of the NHL Amateur Draft
used his 11th-round pick on a fictional player named Taro Tsujimoto in 1974.)
the former Sabres defenseman who would go on to become a longtime broadcaster for the team
recalls Imlach keeping a train ticket visibly sticking out of his pocket during conversations with players
"Just to give you a reminder," Robitaille explained
cared deeply for his players and others in the organization
Sabres play-by-play man Rick Jeanneret would often go for dinner and drinks with Imlach and fellow broadcaster Ted Darling
Imlach insisted their wallets never leave their pockets
Longtime Sabres forward Don Luce got to know Imlach better than many
so he would negotiate his own contracts with Imlach
The conversations would go something like this:
Imlach said the amount was unreasonable and reminded Luce he could be traded
Luce told Imlach to make the deal if he felt it made the team better
"And then that was the end of the conversation
and we talked just hockey for another two hours," Luce said
"We'd do this for like 10 days straight because he just loved to talk hockey and he didn't like to talk to agents
He had a great persona of being this mean guy and the craziness
He loved them and he would take care of them."
Rene Robert once offered a similar description of his former coach
"I had a great relationship with Punch," Robert said
"Punch was a man that was very tough but very loyal to his players
We were not allowed to have ice or water on the bench
But when Punch Imlach shook your hand on a deal
Punch Imlach (right) with Gilbert Perreault and Rick Martin
All of this is to say: Punch Imlach was a colorful
he was a brilliant hockey mind who understood how to build a franchise from the ground up
The Sabres were awarded the first pick in the 1970 amateur draft over fellow expansion team Vancouver thanks to the spin of a roulette wheel
and Imlach made the obvious pick by selecting Gilbert Perreault
Imlach would turn the team into a contender with shrewd trades and consistent drafting
he filled the inaugural roster with seasoned veterans who would produce an exciting brand of hockey for the fans in Buffalo
"He knew he wasn't going any place the first two years with what he had to work with," Robitaille said
but I'm going to tell you what - if I'm going to bring in some players
I'm going to bring in guys who would blow the lid off this place.'"
The list of acquisitions included goaltender Roger Crozier
a former Calder Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy winner with Detroit whose career had been slowed by illness and injury
Crozier captured the imaginations of fans with a 50-save performance in the team's inaugural home game
a key contributor on the 1970-71 team - recalls the presence of veterans like Eddie "The Entertainer" Shack
and Dick Duff as being vital to the development of the team's young players
Imlach coaxed defenseman Tim Horton – a future Hall of Famer who had played under him in Toronto - out of retirement in 1972-73
adding an instant leader and a player who would profoundly impact Buffalo's young defensemen
Imlach hit three home runs in the 1971 draft
He added Jim Schoenfeld (fifth) in 1972 and Danny Gare (29th) in 1974
Imlach combined that success in the draft with trades for Luce
the Sabres were a playoff team with most of the pieces that would comprise the 1974-75 team already in place
They pushed the Montreal Canadiens - who were entrenched in a dynasty - to six games before falling in the opening round
Robitaille and Meehan were both traded by Imlach at the start of that 1974-75 season in a deal that brought defenseman Jocelyn Guevremont from Vancouver
Yet both insist today that Imlach was chiefly responsible for the organization's early success
"He understood that building a team isn't just about getting players to go on the ice," Meehan said
"It's about making the parts each contribute in a way that's suitable to that player and the sum of the parts is a better outcome than just slapping guys on the ice and saying
'Go play defense or forward.' He had a good sense of how to build a team."
Danny Gare was tending to his lawn in Nelson
British Columbia when he got the call that made him a Sabre in spring 1974
Gare remembers pushing the mower through the hilly landscape
sweating out a hot May afternoon when his mother called him from the front door
"She's screaming at me and I got the mower
"I go in and Punch Imlach was on the phone and said
wanted to say we'll be in touch with you,' and so forth and so on
Gare was selected days later by the Winnipeg Jets in the rival World Hockey Association's draft
particularly with the French Connection of Rick Martin
He became a key presence not only for the 1974-75 team
It was there that Gare had his "welcome to the NHL" moment
Gare was small in stature - he stood 5-foot-9 during his NHL career - and so his father instilled in him the importance of toughness at a young age
he accumulated 238 penalty minutes to go with 127 points
the 6-foot-2 defenseman flattened Gare with a hard hit behind the net
then smiled as he helped Gare up to his skates
he came down and put his glove in hand and grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me up and he goes
It was one of several awe-inspiring moments the 20-year-old Gare would experience that fall
He remembers one such instance in a Holiday Inn lobby
Another came following his first practice at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium
when he ventured alone up to the steep orange seats and imagined what it might be like to one day score a goal there
Reality quickly exceeded whatever he might have dreamt
The Sabres opened their season at home against the Boston Bruins on Oct
Gare started the game on a line with Don Luce and Craig Ramsay
tasked with checking Boston's top players: Wayne Cashman
and Ken Hodge at forward; Bobby Orr and Gary Doak on defense
who'd watched these players only months prior in the Stanley Cup Final against Philadelphia
The puck went into the Boston zone off the opening faceoff
Ramsay quickly had an attempt from in front of the net
Gare was in the perfect spot to bury it into a wide-open net
Here's the kicker: The goal came 18 seconds into Gare's NHL career
matching the number on the back of his sweater that now hangs in the KeyBank Center rafters
Gare leapt in the air and thought to himself
"You work so hard to get to the league and then when you get there
and that year it just seemed to grow and grow and grow and grow."
"It really started us off for the season and it continued to get better and grow and elevate our games," Gare said
Bill Hajt is speaking to a group of reporters inside the KeyBank Center media room in November 2019
It's "1970s Night," and Hajt is one of several Sabres alumni in attendance to look back on the franchise's inaugural decade
"You remember everything about your first year," Hajt says
he remembers the Sabres struggling in exhibition play
and he remembers a mediocre start to the regular season
He's only off by one when he recalls the shot count that night (55-31
because [Kings goalie Rogie] Vachon stood on his head and [Sabres goalie Gary Bromley] didn't have a good game
we were in first place the rest of the year
the Sabres went 18-1-3 over their next 22 games
They later went on a 12-game unbeaten streak in February
which began with an 8-1 win over Kansas City in which they tallied 58 shots
a franchise record that remains intact today
It started with the famed French Connection line of Rick Martin
in the words of longtime play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret
"the straw that stirred the drink." He was unquestionably the team's best player
When Perreault had the puck behind his own net
fans would stand in anticipation of an end-to-end rush while opposing players retreated to their own blue line
He crossed the blue line intent on getting the puck to the net
regardless of what it took to get it there
Martin scored 52 goals for the second straight season
Robert may have been the most defensively aware of the three
though he was an offensive talent in his own right
He could score goals and set up his linemates
and he had a knack for sneaking up on opponents by coming in behind the play
It was Robert who led the 1974-75 Sabres with 100 points
But the team was more than just the French Connection
Players constantly pleaded with coach Floyd Smith for more ice time
"Anybody who took a short shift and came over to the bench
it didn't make any difference who was going next
and Danny Gare - tasked with matching up with opponents' top lines - combined for 90 goals
the Sabres had six players score 30 or more goals - Martin (52)
and Gare (31) - setting an NHL record that has since been matched only twice
by the 1977-78 New York Islanders and the 1984-85 Winnipeg Jets
The team's 354 goals remain a franchise record
The Sabres had 6 players score 30-plus goals in 1974-75
one of three teams in NHL history to accomplish that feat
the Sabres had a physically imposing pair in Jim Schoenfeld and Jerry Korab
a duo that Smith says "nobody in the league could challenge." They had Hajt
who teammates revere as one of the true underrated players in the franchise's history
who appeared in 50 games and added another physical presence
Hajt recalls the character that Larry Carriere
good for 113 points and a first-place finish in the Adams Division
It's a franchise record that has only been matched by the Presidents' Trophy team of 2006-07
and forward Brian Spencer - posted the highest point totals of their careers
the better you do as an individual," Lorentz said
"I think that's what we understood and that's what made us successful."
Punch Imlach decided the Sabres needed an upgrade in net
Roger Crozier was a former All-Star who gave the Sabres instant credibility upon joining the team for their inaugural season
but by 1974 a battle with pancreatitis had limited his availability
Crozier played only 23 games in the regular season
leaving second-year goalie Gary Bromley to shoulder the load
That changed in March with the acquisition of Gerry Desjardins
Desjardins had been playing for the Michigan Stags of the World Hockey Association - "probably the worst hockey team in the world," he said - but a clause in his contract allowed him to leave if the team relocated
'Would you be interested in signing with the Sabres?'" Desjardins recalled
Desjardins came with NHL experience; before leaving for the WHA
Joining a team already well on its way to the postseason
but I just felt - at the time I think there was like 15 games left in the season and everybody thought I was the ticket to the Stanley Cup back then," he said
The road to the Cup began against a Chicago team that had finished with 82 points
The Sabres dispatched the Blackhawks in five games for their first series win in franchise history
Jim Schoenfeld remembers feeling like it was simply another checked box
"I just looked at it as the first step," he said
I thought we were going to win the Stanley Cup
so that was one opponent we had to get past
I kind of expected us to win that series."
one moment from the series that lives in Smith's mind still today
and it involved the young captain Schoenfeld
The Blackhawks in those days featured a young
a future Sabre who would go on to amass 2,038 penalty minutes during a 15-year career
Schoenfeld fought Russell during the second period of Game 4
and Smith remembers the two men trading haymakers in one of the greatest fights he ever saw
Longtime broadcaster Rick Jeanneret referred to the fight among the best in Sabres history
saying it was so good that the officials stood to the side and watched
"That turned our team right around," Smith said
Next up was a date with the Montreal Canadiens
a team that had beaten the Sabres two years prior
The Canadiens had already won the Stanley Cup twice in the '70s - in 1972 and '73 - and would go on to win four straight from 1976 to '79
Montreal's roster in 1975 featured 11 future Hall of Famers and was coached by another in Scotty Bowman
The Canadiens earned 113 points - the same as the Sabres - to finish atop the Norris Division
Yet it was the Sabres who went undefeated with four wins and a tie in five regular season meetings
"We had more Frenchmen than they did," Smith said
They wanted to play against the Quebec team
were blown out in Games 3 and 4 in Montreal
then won another overtime contest in Buffalo in Game 5
It was Robert's second overtime goal in his playoff career
The first came in Game 5 against Montreal two years prior
"When you look back over the history of this team," defenseman Mike Robitaille said
"if you had to go into a game in overtime and say it's predicated on
I would really have to give a lot of thought to putting Rene Robert on the ice
The Sabres went back to Montreal and took the deciding Game 6
The team flew back to Western New York and landed in Niagara Falls rather than Buffalo
was that by landing in the Falls rather than their usual spot
they would avoid getting caught in too large a crowd
they were to hop on buses that would take them to their cars at the usual airport
and it's difficult to pinpoint how many fans were waiting for the Sabres' plane on May 8
Fred Stanfield estimated there were 20,000 people
"That was sort of the magic of it," Schoenfeld said
We were the fresh faces in town at a very early time in franchise history
You couldn't have asked for better fan support than we had in Buffalo in the mid-70s."
"But I remember being on the bus almost being ready to leave
Desjardins counts the victory as his fondest memory in the NHL
The Philadelphia Flyers were the defending Cup champions
Bernie Parent posted a 30-save shutout in the deciding game to clinch the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs
He led the league in wins and save percentage and claimed his first Vezina Trophy
awarded then to the netminder who allowed the fewest goals
He earned the Vezina and led the league in wins once again
then he posted three shutouts in playoff series victories over Toronto and the New York Islanders
Playing in front of Parent was the feared "Broad Street Bullies" lineup featuring a Hall of Fame captain in Bobby Clarke; offensive talents like Rick MacLeish
and Bill Barber; and legendary tough guys in Dave Schultz
they led the NHL that season with 1,967 penalty minutes
Gare recalls meeting Schultz after he was traded to Buffalo from Pittsburgh in 1979
Gare was captain of the Sabres by then and had fought Schultz over the years
When Schultz walked into the dressing room
or you want to shake my hand?" The two shook hands
"You hated them," Gare said of the NHL in those days
The Sabres went 0-3-1 against the Flyers in the regular season and historically had a tough time winning at The Spectrum
"We felt we were a better team," Don Luce said
"They had a great team with Bobby Clarke and Rick MacLeish and [Gary] Dornhoefer
you can go right down the line," said forward Jim Lorentz
I don't think we were intimidated at all."
in Game 1 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia but lost
All five goals were scored in the third period
Robert once remembered having three shots from about 20 feet out in that game
Perreault told The New York Times after the game that the Sabres should have led 4-0 entering the third period
Flyers coach Fred Shero said it had been the sharpest he'd seen Parent all season
sending the Sabres back to Buffalo with a 2-0 series deficit
Jim Schoenfeld attacks the Philadelphia net during The Fog Game
1975 peaked around 82 degrees - 14 degrees higher than the historic average
according to the website Weather Underground
It was still 75 degrees by the time the puck dropped between the Sabres and Flyers for Game 3
The temperature inside Buffalo Memorial Auditorium - which lacked air conditioning and sat upwards of 16,000 fans - was closer to 90 degrees
The result was a heavy fog that lifted up from the ice
producing the backdrop for one of the most memorable games in the history of the Stanley Cup Final
"The game was kind of foggy and kind of embarrassing
"Kids were skating around with sheets to bring the fog down and then when you'd bring it down at one end
the game had to be halted 12 times in the last 33 minutes alone
Players were given towels and asked to skate around during stoppages to help raise the fog
start playing again.' It was crazy," Luce said
A player might see a motion and have to guess whether the puck had been sent into the right or left corner
As if the fog wasn't enough of an oddity on its own
a bat could be seen flying around the Aud throughout the game
Lorentz recalls being able to tell where the bat was in the building based on the noise of the crowd
he remembers Parent swatting at it with his goalie stick
"It was the only thing Bernie missed in that series," he would say later
but it was sort flying in a relatively straight," Lorentz said
"And just out of habit I reached up with my stick and it was a direct hit
Danny Gare lined up for the ensuing faceoff and recalls hearing Flyers defenseman Jimmy Watson tell MacLeish he should have left his glove on since the bat could have had rabies
The game itself was a back-and-forth affair worthy of the circumstances surrounding it
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead against goalie Gerry Desjardins just 3:09 into the contest
Gare and Rick Martin scored 17 seconds apart to tie the game
but MacLeish beat Desjardins from some 30 feet out to restore the Flyers' lead going into the first intermission
Desjardins requested to be replaced by Roger Crozier
"I felt it was in the best interest of the team," he told the media afterward
Luce and Leach traded goals in the second period to make it 4-3 in favor of Philadelphia
Bill Hajt scored to tie the game with 10:04 remaining in the third
exhausted not only from playing in the heat but also from having to battle the fog during stoppages
We mentioned earlier how Robert had developed a penchant for scoring overtime goals
which he had done the series prior against Montreal
if not the most famous in the history of the Sabres
With 1:31 remaining in the overtime period
Robert came down the right side and took a shot that emerged from the fog and beat Parent low
forcing the goaltender to stumble down to the ice
Robert chalked up the goal as a lucky break
"It was an angle that was almost impossible to score from," he said
"I could try that thousands of times over and I would probably never
It just happened it was meant to be that the puck went into the right place
"But I never knew I was going to score from there
you could try that your whole career and never score
I don't know if the fog made a difference because it was such a good shot."
to even the series heading back to Philadelphia
Desjardins returned to the net and made 23 saves
The Flyers won the final two games to capture their second straight Stanley Cup championship
Game 5 at the Spectrum opened with three first-period goals against Desjardins and ended as a 5-1 win
Crozier made his first start of the series in Game 6 and matched Parent through two scoreless periods
The Flyers took the lead on a goal from Bob Kelly scored 11 seconds into the third and went on to win
Parent posted a 32-save shutout to earn the Conn Smythe Trophy for the second straight year
Here's how Parton Keese of The New York Times described the scene afterwards:
'Some people say Parent is lucky,’ said Jocelyn Guevremont
The players still look to Parent as the difference 50 years later
"Bernie Parent was the difference," Luce said
When you have a hot goaltender in a situation like that
"We thought we were better than anybody," said forward Craig Ramsay
You don't get there without thinking you're the best
We thought we could beat anybody and wish we'd beaten them
Sabres coach Floyd Smith told reporters afterward that his team would be back in the final
despite making the playoffs each year for the remainder of the seventies and finishing with 100-plus points four times
They nearly made it in 1980 but lost in the semifinal round to an Islanders team on the verge of a dynasty
who left after the season for the World Hockey Association
"We thought if we could have kept that team together
we would have been there several times because we were very
you've got to have a perfect mix to make it all the way
but we had two really important missing pieces that we never got back
the sting of the loss in 1975 remains today
though perhaps it's overshadowed by what they gained
Those who played on the Sabres teams of the seventies grew up together as the expansion franchise took Buffalo by storm
I think it was a group of men who pulled together as a family and tried real hard to pull together to get the big prize

(WKBW) — A 17-year-old girl was killed Sunday at her home
her older brother was charged with her murder
“I just feel very sad for the mother," said Mary Lou Cappellini
who lives next door to the family on Commonwealth Avenue
this is something that could happen anywhere.”
was arraigned Monday afternoon in Buffalo City on multiple charges:
Police were called to the scene at a little after 1:30 p.m
According to a recording of dispatch calls on Broadcastify.com
they knew the suspect was in the area and a search was conducted
prosecutors said that Allen tried to grab an officer's gun and that an officer Tasered him.Allen was supposed to be arraigned Monday morning
but that was delayed because of "issues" Allen was having with court officers
City Court Judge John Feroleto ordered a forensic mental health evaluation
Buffalo Public Schools confirmed the girl was a student in the district
Cappellini said that the girl's mother told her that the girl was a senior in high school and was about to graduate
"And she was gonna be going to her prom this month and
and she was getting ready for college," Cappellini said

Ryan O’Halloran and Katherine Fitzgerald give their take on the division
Let’s first acknowledge it’s an uphill battle for any undrafted free agent to make the 53-man roster
Joe Andreessen showed last year that it can be done
and he came to the Bills as a rookie tryout player
When trying to identify a diamond in the rough
a good place to start is the positions the Bills drafted
Those players will get every chance to make the team
which leads me to Virginia Tech’s Keonta Jenkins
2.5 sacks and nine passes defensed in his college career
Jenkins was the fourth-highest-graded player on the Hokies’ defense
according to analytics website Pro Football Focus
he might have to beat out Andreessen or Edefuan Ulofoshio
I’ll go with guard Rush Reimer out of the University of California
The Bills like a little extra insurance on their offensive line
The starters are set – all five returning from last season

I can see Reimer finding a spot on the practice squad

A look at the process undertaken by the Bills for this year's NFL draft
The Bills only semi-addressed safety in the draft with fifth-rounder Jordan Hancock
who will learn both the nickel and safety spots
That creates an opportunity for a player like New Hampshire safety Wande Owens
A cool backstory is that Bills director of player personnel Terrance Gray scouted Owens in 2023 at a Yale practice
Owens was twice a first-team All-Ivy League selection (165 tackles in 29 games) before finishing at New Hampshire (111 tackles in 13 games and first-team All-CAA)

Many of the names on the current roster are unknowns
and many are undrafted free agents and rookies
Most of these names won't make the cut
while some will find their way to the practice squad
The practice squad must consist of 10 rookies or second-year players
and the other six do not have any limitations
let's take a very early shot at what the Bills' initial 53-man roster might look like come September

and Mitchell Trubisky will continue his role as Allen's backup
That leaves Shane Buechele and Mike White on the odd men out
The Bills had one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL last season and will return the same group for the 2025 season
This could be James Cook's last season in a Bills uniform
this is one of the best backfields in the league
Frank Gore Jr will likely be on the practice squad again
leaving Darrynton Evans as a cut candidate
There will be some fans who want to see more of Zack Davidson, but he's more of a pass-catching tight end, something the Bills already have with Dalton Kincaid. Dawson Knox is the most well-rounded of the group, with some pass-catching ability and a solid blocker. Rookie Jackson Hawes
could prove to be the blocker of the bunch
The Bills return their starting five from the 2024 season
This unit is one of the best in the league
The Bills will probably roll with 10 linemen
but the wildcards are last year's rookie Travis Clayton and this year's Chase Lundt
Clayton is an International Pathways player who had no college experience and is a project player
The other wildcard is Kendrick Green at one of the guard spots
He has starting experience in the league and could potentially push for a spot on the Bills' 53-man roster

One unknown variable is the free agent addition of Michael Hoecht
His versatility as a linebacker or defensive end will make it interesting how the coaching staff builds this side of the roster
plus his six-game suspension will cause someone to get bumped from the 53-man roster when he returns
The 1-tech defensive tackles are Zion Logue
At the 3-tech spot, Ed Oliver returns as the top guy here, with T.J. Sanders serving as the primary backup
Things will be reshuffled once Larry Ogunjobi returns from his six-game suspension
with Terrel Bernard and Matt Milano returning as the starters
and Dorian Williams will assume his role as the primary backup
Joe Andreesson will make the 53-man roster
Most people have penciled Cole Bishop into the starting safety position opposite Taylor Rapp
but Damar Hamlin might have something to say about that

Just days after Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane delivered an expletive-laden rant on WGR 550 to those who said the Bills needed to add more talent at the wide receiver position through the 2025 NFL Draft
the Bills added veteran wide receiver Elijah Moore on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million
Moore represents solid value and is a low-risk
high-reward signing for Buffalo’s wide receiver room
and today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off with thoughts on what Moore can bring to the offense
Elijah Moore, a former second-round draft pick of the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft, is coming off a season where he caught a career-best 61 passes for 538 yards and one touchdown with the Cleveland Browns
brings good speed to Buffalo’s wide receivers and while he has played with subpar quarterbacks so far in his first four years in the league
having Josh Allen throwing him the football could unlock Moore’s abilities as a dynamic weapon who can work his way open almost anywhere on the field
Moore is also skilled as a boundary receiver
and his versatility should serve the Bills well
Moore is in the prime of his career and represents a big upgrade at the fifth wide receiver spot in Buffalo

Buffalo Trace Distillery has officially confirmed that E.H
Taylor Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon will be joining its prestigious annual lineup
making its debut as part of the 2025 BTAC Collection
The move marks the first addition to BTAC since Thomas H
And for longtime fans of Buffalo Trace’s heritage-rich portfolio
this update feels more like destiny than surprise
The Bottled-in-Bond expression pays tribute to Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr.
widely considered the “Father of Modern Bourbon,” and the driving force behind one of the most significant milestones in whiskey history: the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897
“As a founding figure who helped define bourbon quality — not just for Buffalo Trace
but for the entire industry — it’s only fitting that Colonel E.H
Taylor Jr.’s namesake brand takes its place among the collection,” Andrew Duncan
Buffalo Trace Distillery said in an emailed statement
we proudly pay tribute to Colonel Taylor’s enduring legacy of innovation and craftsmanship.”
The Antique Collection is known for its limited annual releases that highlight long-aged
and meticulously selected barrels from Buffalo Trace’s extensive warehouses
These whiskeys are lauded not only for their complexity and rarity
but also for representing the pinnacle of Buffalo Trace’s aging and blending programs
federally bonded bourbon—signals a new chapter
While the standard Bottled-in-Bond expression remains a consumer favorite in the $40–60 range
this BTAC release is expected to reflect extended aging
and deeper barrel selection—placing it in direct conversation with the likes of Stagg and Weller in terms of prestige
and his impact on American whiskey cannot be overstated
responsible for modernizing the distillery with copper fermentation tanks
and steam-heated warehouses—some of which are still in use today
Taylor was a key figure behind the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897
the first piece of federal legislation to establish standards for whiskey production and labeling
It defined what constituted a “straight” whiskey
and required the spirit to be the product of one distillation season
and one distillery—all bottled at 100 proof under federal supervision
This act essentially introduced the idea of government-regulated whiskey purity—a vital protection for consumers during an era rife with counterfeit and adulterated spirits
the new BTAC release will bear Taylor’s signature
the introduction of a new BTAC label is a rare event—only the second in over 20 years
With existing BTAC expressions already fetching high secondary market prices and being the subject of annual lotteries
The move also strengthens the long-term positioning of the E.H
Taylor brand as a cornerstone of Buffalo Trace’s prestige portfolio
While Buffalo Trace has yet to release details on age statement
The standard Bottled-in-Bond release already draws from Mashbill #1 (a low-rye bourbon mash)
and if this BTAC edition follows suit—with additional aging and BTAC-level curation—it could become one of the more balanced and historically resonant entries in the collection
Look for the 2025 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection—including the debut of E.H
Taylor Bottled-in-Bond BTAC Edition—to begin arriving in extremely limited allocations this fall
The man accused of breaking into a Buffalo elementary school in February now faces four felony charges – including attempted kidnapping – after being indicted by an Erie County grand jury
Shane Cronin is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Erie County Court
the Illinois native faces new felony charges: second-degree attempted kidnapping; attempted luring of a child to commit a felony against that child; burglary; and attempted assault on school grounds
He is still charged with misdemeanor child endangerment
The District Attorney’s Office declined to comment Monday
Buffalo Public Schools also declined to comment
said he would not comment because he has not seen the indictment
was initially charged in Buffalo City Court
A Buffalo police detective took to a popular podcast Saturday to allege Buffalo Public Schools has covered up incidents of attempted abduction

misdemeanor assault and child endangerment
the Buffalo Police Department said officers responded to Dr
Drew Science Magnet School 59 at about 12:30 p.m
a day prior for a call of an assault in progress
The original police report said Cronin entered the elementary school through an interior door that connects to the Buffalo Museum of Science
The report indicated that Cronin “approached a young student” and said
sweetie?,” which Police Officer Niko Davis said caused the student “fear and alarm.”
faces additional charges after five officers were injured in a fight Wednesday as he arrived at the Erie County Holding Center
The new charges follow accusations made on the Unsubscribe Podcast on April 26 by Buffalo Police Detective Richard Hy
who argued that the reported crimes in the February incident were much more serious than initially reported
Hy described the case as an attempted abduction of two students
and it’s unclear whether authorities believe multiple students were involved
Hy accused Buffalo Public Schools of covering up incidents and improperly handling situations involving accusations made by students
“The Buffalo school system has been intentionally not reporting the sexual assault of students
and has also used the Buffalo Police Department’s school resource officers to write reports and use their influence over those officers to close those reports,” Hy said on the podcast
the YouTube version of which has reached 1.5 million views
Hy said he is working on that case directly and claims Buffalo Schools did not inform the parent of an involved child that the student was the target of an attempted abduction
Hy added that school officials did not include in their original incident report that a second student was involved
and that the original footage of the incident was deleted

The empty Mulligan’s Brick Bar is now on the market
Listing agent Carmelo Parlato (Gurney Becker and Bourne) called to share the news that 229 Allen Street – the former home to one of the city’s most beloved drinking establishments – is now ready for a new owner
^ A series of art installations have recently popped up at the corner of Allen and Mariner, commemorating the two iconic and irreplaceable Allentown bars. I see that artist Mickey Harmon is also colorfully represented
229 Allen Street is the vacant lot formally known as Mulligan’s Brick Bar preceding a fire that caused the building to be demolished
The lot is located in the heart of the Allentown Historic Preservation District just .08 miles from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
with 30 feet of frontage and 125 feet of depth
This is an environmentally clean and shovel ready site
This lot is adjacent to a City of Buffalo owned parking lot/vacant land (225 Allen Street) with 42 feet of frontage and 125 feet of depth
Adjacent to 225 Allen is another vacant lot formally known as The Old Pink/Pink Flamingo (223 Allen Street)
also preceding a fire and owned separately by a private owner
223 Allen has 40 feet of frontage and 100 feet of depth
It may be possible that all 3 parcels together make up an ideal development site
favorable to both the community and developer(s)
The current tax assessment and property taxes listed do not reflect the new the “vacant lot” status and have not been changed from when there was a building on the property
Allen Street was recently transformed with a brand-new streetscape and updated infrastructure
Let’s hope that whoever purchases this lot takes into consideration the tragic architectural loss of a historic structure that helped to anchor Allen Street
We should all be praying and crossing our fingers at this point in time

There have only been a few notable misses in the Beane era
The NFL Draft is far from an exact sciences, with every club across the league having their fair share of hits and misses. Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills are no exception to this rule
with some notable whiffs since Beane took over the draft in 2018
Now before anyone accuses me of focusing on the negatives
next week’s article will focus on the biggest draft hits from Beane
That list is much longer than what you’ll see below
so trust me when I say that the positive news is on its way
For the time being we have to “eat our vegetables,” and digest some of the negatives from recent drafts
The Bills made a modest trade up in the 2019 NFL Draft to acquire Cody Ford
packaging picks 40 and 158 to move up to the 38th spot
Ford was expected to be the right tackle of the future with Buffalo
and he platooned a bit with veteran Ty Nsekhe during his rookie year
with Ford making the move to guard in his two remaining seasons with the Bills
It should be noted that Ford started 29 games across three seasons, before ending up benched in 2021 when Spencer Brown was inserted into the starting lineup (shifting Daryl Williams to guard). Beane did trade Ford during the 2022 offseason, recouping a fifth-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals
Carlos “Boogie” Basham got off to an inauspicious start with the Bills
being listed as “inactive” during nine of 17 regular-season games during his rookie season
While Basham got much more playing time during his sophomore season — playing about 39% of snaps — he failed to make an impact for the Bills
Knowing that Basham would likely be cut prior to the start of the 2023 season, Beane traded him to the New York Giants in a swap of 2025 NFL draft picks
The Bills received pick 177 that was used to select cornerback Dorian Strong
while the Giants took cornerback Korie Black with pick 246
Kaiir Elam’s time in Buffalo came to an end this offseason, as the Bills traded him to the Dallas Cowboys along with pick 204 (offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius) in exchange for pick 170 (defensive back Jordan Hancock) in the 2025 draft and a 2026 seventh-round pick
Elam is the only first-round miss in Beane’s tenure with Buffalo
the Bills moved up to select Elam — packaging picks 25 and 130 to move up to pick 23
It was truly a sophomore slump for Elam during the 2023 season, at which point he found himself listed as “inactive” or a DNP in 14 of 17 regular-season games. One of those three games he did play included a unforgettably poor performance in London, UK versus the Jacksonville Jaguars
appearing in 13 of 17 regular season games
but he too often unreliable at cornerback for the Bills’ defense
it’s a relatively short list of draft misses for Brandon Beane
there are other picks that I could second guess (Justin Shorter
but I don’t believe it would be fair to consider selections on Day 3 as a miss
Let me know if there are any other draft misses that I may have neglected to include
and be on the lookout for a rundown of Beane’s greatest draft hits
The Buffalo Bills are back to the drawing board

When is the 2025 NFL schedule release? The 2025 NFL schedule release is slated in full on Wednesday
It has essentially become the final marquee offseason event of the NFL calendar
representing the official turning of the page to next season
All 32 teams will see their entire 18-week roadmap to the 2025 regular season revealed on schedule release day
Leaks will trickle out in the days leading up to it
but the fall calendar will begin to take shape after the official release
This year's schedule release will be held one day earlier than last year's
The NFL announced the 2024 schedule at 8 p.m
so fans can expect a similar release time for this year's schedule
But several pundits agree with his sentiment and laud how Beane has supported Josh Allen with his receiving corps
considering the support Beane is trying to provide him with
particularly on the defensive side of the ball
But what Rogers brought up in the midst of this was Beane's recent squabble on Buffalo sports station WGR550
"I'm usually with you on this Connor
I don't like to hear coaches or GMs complain a lot," Simms said
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and NFL commissioner Roger Goddell / Matthew Emmons-Imagn ImagesSimms credited Beane with not making the rant "personal," but also how it was "funny," particularly of the stray bullet sent to Allen's 2018 draft classmate of Josh Rosen
The latter QB has been out of the NFL completely since 2021
RELATED: Forgotten Bills' WR will have prime chance to bail out GM Brandon Beane
he has a victory lap he can do for the rest of his life," said Simms on Beane
Factoring in the latest addition of Elijah Moore
and Rogers look smart for defending his radio tirade if the Buffalo offense is as prolific as it was in 2024

The Bills have nine new players on their roster following the 2025 NFL Draft
Six of those players call defense their home
Every new pick spoke with the media after being drafted and had a lot to say about why Buffalo is the right home
which players they can't wait to lineup with and their excitement about becoming an NFL player
Bills GM Brandon Beane joined One Bills Live to recap the team's 2025 draft class
He talked about his draft board and how it fell in their favor with the defensive talent acquisitions
He discussed the maneuvering they had to do to grab talent along the defensive line and the depth they have on the roster
He examined the upside he hopes to get out of pass rusher Landon Jackson
and the surprises he found in this year's draft
including 7th round WR Kaden Prather and the free agent visit from WR Elijah Moore
The Bills drafted Kentucky cornerback Maxwell Hairston with their first pick in this year's draft
Hairston is known for his speed as he ran the fastest time (4.28) at the NFL Scouting Combine
and the cornerback finished with six career interceptions in 20 starts
He's excited to bring his versatility to Buffalo
"I feel like I'm so versatile that I can come out
I'm happy to just be able to go into an organization with a beautiful scheme that will allow me to get the ball back."
Hairston doesn't just have a knack for getting the ball back
The CB turned six of his career interceptions into three touchdowns
Hairston grew up playing basketball and believes that helps him be a ballhawk in football
He's looking forward to meeting another ballhawk in Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White
Hairston has learned a lot from his family as well
Hairston had his entire family with him in Green Bay to celebrate the big moment
His family also joined him on his first day as a Bill at One Bills Drive
The cornerback says he will continue to rely on them as he transitions to the NFL
"Their support really is what keeps me going," Hairston shared
And I always got my family through thick and thin
Buffalo Bills First-Round Pick Maxwell Hairston sits down with Maddy Glab in an exclusive 1-on-1 interview on his first day as a Buffalo Bill
Sanders is known for his pass-rush ability on the interior and put together 9.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss during his four years with the Gamecocks
The DT is excited to bring his high effort style of play to Buffalo
"I think I bring a high motor," Sanders said
He earned All-State honors his junior season in high school and averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per game
Sanders transitioned to football full-time late
so he has only six true years of experience under his belt
Beane and the scouting staff believe Sanders has high upside
What got Sanders hooked on the game of football was getting sacks
"I just felt alive getting that first sack and after that I just wanted more and more sacks," Sanders said thinking back to high school
"And getting a scholarship to do that for college
now getting a chance to do that in the NFL
that's the joy you get from playing D-line."
Sanders is already feeling at home in Buffalo
just getting to know everybody," Sanders said of his first day in the building
I kind of feel like this is exactly what I was looking for."
Join Maddy Glab as she sits down with new Bills Defensive Tackle TJ Sanders as he talks his favorite music
Buffalo drafted a defensive player with off-the-chart traits in the third round of the draft
The Bills selected defensive end Landon Jackson out of Arkansas with the 72nd pick
The edge rusher turned heads at the NFL Scouting Combine when he clocked a 4.68 40-yard dash and a 40.5 inch vertical
Jackson's traits turned into production at Arkansas as he recorded 16 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss in three years
The DE models his game off a four-time Pro Bowler
He knows how to fly around in the pass game and get after the quarterback
and then in the run game he knows how to set an edge and be a dominant defensive end
"That's the guy that I model my game after
I feel like we have a lot of similarities in body type and play style."
Jackson is elated to be a Buffalo Bill because he loves the scheme fit as he'll lineup as a true defensive end
The Arkansas product also enjoyed getting to know the staff throughout the pre-draft process
I had a formal meeting with the team at the Combine," Jackson said
"And just through every aspect of the process
I just kind of felt like they were really high on me
I felt like I fit their defense really well…I feel like this is the place for me."
The newest Buffalo Bill Landon Jackson meets with the media after being selected 72nd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft
Topics include: His emotions when getting the call from Bills GM Brandon Beane
his conversations with the Bills organization leading up to the draft
and his excitement to join Joey Bosa and the rest of the Bills defense
Buffalo selected their third straight defensive lineman from the draft
they decided they couldn't let Kentucky defensive tackle Deone Walker go to another team as they traded up to get him
Walker has great size at around 6'7 and 330 but also has a fluidity to the way he plays the position that you don't always see
That fluidity turned into 10 sacks and 22 tackles for loss in 35 starts at Kentucky
The Bills aren't just getting size in their newest DT
they're also getting a two-time team captain
"I feel like my leadership style is kind of different," Walker explained
Just get good relationships with a lot of – or most of the guys on the team…if they do end up having a bad day…be able to have that relationship to be able to come and talk to them."
A few players already know Walker's leadership style as the DT played at Kentucky with Bills CB Maxwell Hairston and RB Ray Davis
The three overlapped during the 2023 season and are excited to be reunited once again
"I know Max told me as soon as he got drafted
he was standing on the table for me," Walker said
it's just great to be back to being teammates with those guys."
Buffalo Bills Defensive Tackle Deon Walker addresses the media after being selected in 2025 NFL Draft
Topics include: what he knows about the Buffalo Bills organization
filling a need at Defensive Tackle for the Bills
playing alongside his University of Kentucky teammates Ray Davis and Maxwell Hairston
Buffalo started off their 2025 NFL Draft with five straight defensive picks
which is something they've never done in the Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott era
the Bills selected defensive back Jordan Hancock out of Ohio State
Buffalo likes Hancock's versatility and sees him fitting in at nickel and safety
"They're going to get a competitive player
someone that's going to be ready to learn," Hancock said
"And somebody that is going to be ready to develop
two and a half sacks and 98 tackles in his four seasons at Ohio State
The DB also won at the highest level as Ohio State was crowned the College Football Playoff Champions in January
Hancock thought he grew a lot in his skillset at Ohio State by being around great coaches and expects to do the same in Buffalo
you're not bigger than anybody," Hancock said
and I'm ready to learn and ready to compete."
Buffalo Bills Defensive Back Jordan Hancock addresses the media after being selected in 2025 NFL Draft
Topics include: what he brings to the table that will make an impact in Buffalo
his willingness to learn and develop as a player
Buffalo selected their first offensive player in fifth round in Georgia Tech tight end Jackson Hawes
The TE spent his first three seasons at Yale before transferring to Georgia Tech for his last season
Hawes believes he learned a lot from playing football at an Ivy League school
it gave me the opportunity to see all the other gears and things that are necessary in the offseason to become a complete player
"All those other elements coming together that I didn't really prioritize as much in high school
that was something that Yale helped me do."
The TE is known for his talent as a blocker but also saw success as a pass-catcher
566 receiving yards and six touchdowns during his time at Yale and Georgia Tech
"I think the violent part of football really excites me
"It really should excite everyone that is playing
there is no better feeling than when you're moving someone
You see the little running back just run right past you and get yards
Buffalo Bills Tight End Jackson Hawes addresses the media after being selected in 2025 NFL Draft
Topics include: his first impressions of the Buffalo Bills organization
his transition from playing at Yale to Georgia Tech
and what he will bring to the Bills as a blocking Tight End
The Bills came away from the 2025 NFL Draft with three defensive linemen and three defensive backs
Virginia cornerback Dorian Strong marked the third DB taken by Buffalo
Strong was selected by the Bills' first pick in the sixth round of the draft
Buffalo believes the physical corner's best fit in the defense is at outside corner
"I feel like I fit their scheme and their system very

Buffalo finished up their draft class by selecting Maryland wide receiver Kaden Prather with their only seventh round pick
Prather played his first two seasons with West Virginia before transferring to Maryland

What caught Buffalo's coaching staff's eyes was Prather's work ethic
"Enough is never enough for me," Prather said of his work ethic
Even if I have a career high game or if I have the worst game in my life
I'm gonna wake up the next morning and figure out how I can get better for my teammates."
One of the many reasons why Prather is excited to call Buffalo home is getting to catch passes from an MVP quarterback

A celebrity that is hard to miss has been spotted a few times around Western New York
It is always fun when a celebrity visits Buffalo
and this one has been spotted all over the place
One fan took a picture and posted it on Facebook "Why is Peyton Manning going unnoticed as he looks at Niagara Falls"
Another person posted a video of him outside of the Big Tree Inn in Orchard Park right by the Buffalo Bills stadium
it looked like Peyton was filming some sort of commercial
He was seen with the 'Chefs'--the legendary Bills fans who were also the Fans of the Year
Even though the spotting of Manning was at the end of April
the Buffalo Bills posted a photo of the Bills head coach
Sean McDermott with Peyton on Thursday afternoon
The Buffalo Bills are getting ready to move to their new home across the street once the 2026-2027 season gets under way in Orchard Park
The Bills have mentioned that inside the new stadium they will have an event happening before the football season begins
It will be more of a soft opening and the event is yet to be determined
but it will certainly be essential to have a dry run of the stadium with thousands of people in it to get a feel of the operating capacity
The schedule for the upcoming National Football League is coming out on May 14 at 8 PM
The teams already know who their opponents will be and whether they are at home or away

the Bills drafted Jaxson Hawes in the fifth round last week out of Georgia Tech
Hawes isn't going to be a top receiver
but has shown prowess to be a blocker for any offensive scheme.
Just because the Bills have certain plans for him
doesn't mean he can't grow into something more.
And the mere fact that the Bills have drafted a blocking tight end to the roster is a clear sign that they may be willing to begin pushing Knox further down the total pole for playing time.
"Our best blocker today is Dawson Knox
came out as a receiving tight end that's really a three-down player
now we can go some packages and run with Dawson and him in there
and it saves [Dalton] Kincaid from some of that stuff," said Beane
I think it just gives us more versatility to what we can do
you feel really good about him coming in and being that blocker for us.”
This doesn't mean Knox is about to be released
But if the Bills want to play in two-tight end sets
they are going to have to bench someone.
And Hawes' top blocking ability will make him an intriguing option for the organization moving forward.

the Buffalo Bills went from not having enough wide receivers to having too many
They selected Maryland wideout Kaden Prather in the seventh round of the NFL Draft
and followed that up by signing former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Elijah Moore
Now with two additional pass-catchers on the roster
that will leave multiple pass-catchers open to become cap casualties
ESPN's Adam Schefter seemingly left a warning for the Bills' receivers of the inevitable that awaits the unit in the coming months
"They have so many [wide receivers] that there's not room for all of them right now," Schefter said
The receiver who seems most likely to be let go would be Curtis Samuel
He caught just 31 passes in 2024 and his cap hit sits at $9.7 million for the 2025 season
and Prather is younger and arguably more explosive
While they'll all duke it out in training camp and preseason

The Buffalo police officer who last summer fatally shot a driver on Kensington Avenue as the officer clung to an open door of a speeding car will be recognized for his actions by the National Association of Police Organizations
“Buddy” Ammerman will receive the TOP COPS award at an awards ceremony May 12 in Washington
He will be among 20 officers from 10 departments across the country being given the award
“The purpose of the TOP COPS Awards is to educate the American public about our nation’s heroes and to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal
tribal and local agencies from across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the preceding year,” the association said in a news release
Ammerman and Officer Jonathan Crawford pulled over a vehicle driven by Dae’von Roberts
on Kensington for speeding and tinted windows
Critics say it was the type of traffic stop at the heart of a lawsuit against the city and the department accusing police of using vehicular stops to target
detain and search Black and Latino Buffalonians
Roberts’ 6-year-old cousin was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle
When Ammerman asked Roberts to step out of the vehicle
Roberts shifted the car into drive and sped away with Ammerman holding onto the open door
The vehicle’s speed exceeded 60 mph as it hurtled down the street
Twenty-two seconds after Roberts started to speed away
Ammerman fired five shots that hit Roberts
Police later found a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat
The state Attorney General's Office on Friday said prosecutors would be unable to disprove Buffalo Police Officer Ronald Ammerman was justified in the fatal shooting of Dae'von Roberts in July
The State Attorney General’s Office in March announced there would be no criminal prosecution of Ammerman
who is in his ninth year with the Police Department
The Attorney General’s Office determined that Roberts grabbed for Ammerman’s gun at one point in the incident
and that Roberts also pushed Ammerman’s foot away when the officer tried to brake the car
Ammerman was nominated for the award by Buffalo Police Benevolent Association president John Davidson
“He truly risked his life and set aside his own safety to save a young child and protect the citizens of Buffalo by taking a violent criminal and his illegal firearm out of the community,” Davidson said
Davidson said Ammerman “exemplifies what it means to be a public servant.”
“The Buffalo Police Department and the Buffalo PBA count themselves lucky to have him on our side
and the citizens are blessed to have him watching out for them,” Davidson said
The National Association of Police Organizations describes itself as a coalition of more than 1,000 police units and associations that represent about 241,000 rank-and-file officers across the country

Micah Hyde held his charity softball game in Buffalo on Sunday and Bills Mafia is wondering where one of the most popular players was

It's become one of the premier charity events of the year for Bills Mafia. It's an incredible opportunity to see some of your favorite Buffalo Bills. But this year one of the biggest names on the team wasn't there
Although he's been the reigning champion of the homerun derby for years (except for the year that Spencer Brown won it)
Josh Allen was not seen at the charity softball game this year. Micah shared a video of the locker room on his story on social media and it appeared as though Josh had his own locker with a jersey hanging with #17 on it but he was not seen there
it should be said that they never promoted that Josh would be there. So it's not as though he committed and just didn't show. He wasn't the only player that wasn't there either. It just stood out that he wasn't there because most years

Bear with me as I provide a little background leading into this review
I spend time with the book and in the book
I develop a relationship with every book I review (I didn't say they were all good relationships ...)
which I'm convinced was responsible for the slasher revival in horror fiction
but I wanted to put my humble credentials behind this statement: The Buffalo Hunter Hunter is Jones' masterpiece
It's 2012 and they find the diary of Arthur Beaucarne
soon becomes a detailed chronicle of several massacres
Meanwhile — not as background to the action but as a present
vital character — Jones centers Blackfeet culture and history
written by Beaucarne — "Three-Persons" — and Good Stab
and the supernatural full of brilliant prose carried by two very distinctive
Historical horror can be a superb subgenre when done right
The author easily transports readers to 1912 and then through a plethora of events that make up Good Stab's biography
Beaucarne proves to be a jovial narrator with a sweet tooth
But then Good Stab comes along and the narrative takes a turn into strange
and some truths are really hard to swallow
Beaucarne could easily have carried this narrative
talking and debating as the story progresses and more supernatural elements start showing up
Jones' work has often showed a chameleonic sense of humor that goes from easy jokes and snappy dialogue to funny commentary that goes much deeper and offers a distinctive look at what makes us human
the best vehicle Jones has crafted for his sense of humor and passion for sentences that sing and curl around themselves
But if peeking into Arthur's mind is light with a few dark spots
listening to Good Stab's story is understanding pain and violence
learning about brutal murder and the meaning of a young man's first scalping
Good Stab is a haunted creature that must drink human blood to survive
but Jones weaves them together into one gripping story
Jones has been delivering unique stories that exist in and around horror
Jones has not only chronicled Blackfeet culture but also spoken through his characters against the flawed monolith known as "the Native American experience." In The Buffalo Hunter Hunter
and spins a spellbinding yarn about one of the bloodiest
most significant parts of this country's history
I said this is Stephen Graham Jones' masterpiece because the prose is gorgeous and the plot is complex
but we have seen these elements from him before
Maybe I should say this is the novel in which Jones does all the things he does but even better than before
Basketball legend Michael Jordan had many legendary games; The Buffalo Hunter Hunter is Jones' version of Jordan dropping 69 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers

NY – The Buffalo Bills and team owner Terry Pegula welcomed New York State Governor Kathy Hochul
National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell
and other dignitaries to Western New York today to celebrate the "Topping Out" of new Highmark Stadium
A Topping Out ceremony is a customary way to celebrate a significant milestone during the construction of a new building
Workers placed the last piece of structural steel atop the 156-foot-high stadium structure as part of the ceremony
The final beam was accented with an American flag
signifying good luck and prosperity for future building occupants
A joint venture of Gilbane Building Company and Turner Construction Company provides construction management of more than 1,200 trade persons onsite daily
which will continue to climb into the summer
Construction at the site of New Highmark Stadium began with a ceremonial groundbreaking on Monday
The largest construction project in the history of Western New York is now over 50 percent complete (based on the volume of work in place)
All precast stadia (seating bowl) are complete
and workers will begin seat installation later this spring
The final steel beam was raised into place at the New Highmark Stadium
representing the completion of the structural steel phase of the project
Team reporter Maddy Glab emceed the event and we heard from Bills Owner/President/COO Terry Pegula
New Highmark Stadium is on schedule to open ahead of the 2026 Buffalo Bills season
Today's milestone comes just twenty months after the groundbreaking of the new 60,000-plus-seat facility
designed by the Bills in conjunction with Legends and the architectural firm Populous
"I know how much the Bills mean to this community
I really believe this is going to secure the franchise here for decades," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell
Bills owner Terry Pegula recognized the construction site workers who have been on-site since the groundbreaking and helped keep the stadium construction on schedule
Today is about you hard workers; men and women
The construction team has put in place more than 19,000 individual pieces of steel weighing nearly 24,000 tons
The scope of work necessitated the participation of 16 fabrication companies
with 60% of the steel produced in New York State and almost all made in the United States
The project has included the removal of 630,000 cubic yards of dirt and installing 18,000 cubic yards of foundation concrete
over 1.5 million square feet of concrete floors
*As many as 1,500 workers will be on the site at the peak of construction- including people working on masonry
Workers have already contributed over 1.7 million craft hours to construction
"We're incredibly proud to reach this major milestone in the construction of the new Highmark Stadium
This achievement is testament to the hard work of our skilled trade partners who have worked over 1.7 million hours to date building this state-of-the-art facility
Thanks to the incredible collaboration with the Buffalo Bills
and the support of the State of New York and Erie County
this stadium will serve as a proud beacon for the region and showcase the very best in professional sports venues." - John LaRow
the construction manager for the new stadium
"This milestone marks more than the structural progress of a stadium—it reflects the spirit and strength of the Buffalo community
We are deeply grateful to the Buffalo Bills
and the thousands of union tradespeople—so many of whom call this region home—whose skill and commitment are bringing this landmark project to life
It is profoundly meaningful that members of the community are helping to build a venue that will serve as a source of pride and celebration for generations to come." - Joe Byrne
"Today marks a major milestone for the future home of the Buffalo Bills and one of the largest construction projects ever built in Western New York
This world- class stadium would not be possible without our skilled union workers and partners
and I look forward to cheering along with them at the first Bills game being played here in the 2026 season." – New York State Governor Kathy Hochul

The Bills drafted six defensive players and three offensive players in the 2025 NFL Draft
The premise is simple: It's hard for a person to be healthy without access to safe housing
nutritious food and reliable transportation
a solution to that problem has long been elusive
driving health inequities in cities such as Buffalo
people aren't able to be well," said Kathryn Diebold
vice president of behavioral health and wellness programs at Jewish Family Services of Western New York
"They're not able to even think about following up with medical providers
behavioral health providers if they don't have those basic needs."
is aiming to do something about that as one of the earliest agencies participating in Western New York Integrated Care Collaborative's social care network for Erie
Buffalo nonprofit WNYICC built a system of 70-plus community-based organizations that will help Medicaid members access nutritional meals
transportation and other social services – the kinds of things that can significantly affect a person's health
The creation of these social care networks is a critical part of the state's health goals for New Yorkers
and those efforts are pushing forward even amid the threat of federal cuts to Medicaid
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in January 2024 approved New York State's $7.5 billion Medicaid Section 1115 Demonstration Waiver
The effort includes nearly $6 billion in federal funding
and is focused on actions that will boost health equity
cut health disparities and bolster access to primary and behavioral health care
the waiver includes $500 million to build the infrastructure for nine social care networks across the state
WNYICC can receive up to $36.8 million through March 2027
WNYICC already has distributed more than $5 million to its network organizations to help them build capacity and to get ready to provide social care services
who has scaled up her own agency from five employees to 25 full-time employees in less than a year
"We're right on that precipice of having it really start going bigger," said Kmicinski
noting the network's outreach and promotion will start this month
Nikki Kmicinski is CEO of Western New York Integrated Care Collaborative
JFS received an infrastructure grant through WNYICC of just under $300,000
That helped the organization to hire and train staff
Diebold said JFS will have six staff members supporting the social care network work: two social care navigators
a housing manager and a manager of outreach and engagement
The timing of starting up the social care network also aligned well for JFS, which had to cut some positions this year after the programs it provides to refugees were disrupted by the Trump administration's suspension of foreign aid programs
two employees who were furloughed from the agency's refugee resettlement services were brought back as social care navigators
while two other employees who would have lost their jobs were retained as housing navigators supporting the social care network
"We're committed to do that as much as we possibly can at the agency
and they've built these strong relationships in the community," Diebold said
JFS will provide two main services under the social care network: screening and navigation
Diebold explained the agency's screeners and navigators will meet with Medicaid-eligible or Medicaid-enrolled clients to go through a brief screening to determine their needs
the navigators will be responsible for connecting clients with health-related social needs services within the social care network
go over leases and help support them to stay in housing
is the housing services will now be Medicaid reimbursable services in New York
Diebold said housing programs were largely dependent on grants
"Being able to do these housing navigation services and have them reimbursable by Medicaid
that's pretty much a game-changer in our region," Diebold said
WNYICC will get up to $36.8 million over 2½ years as the social care network for Western New York
expanding into social care and housing navigation services was "a natural fit," Diebold said
JFS already has an established care coordination program
so it has experience working with Medicaid enrollees with chronic health conditions
The agency also has long provided housing services within its refugee resettlement program
so now JFS can lean on that experience to serve a different clientele
"the client sits at the center of a group of people looking to support their well-being" by connecting the client to needed services such as housing assistance
"Those are three big things that really prevent people from being well," Diebold said
housing and utilities services available within the social care network of providers include home modifications such as ramps
repairs to fix water leaks to prevent mold growth
For Medicaid-eligible individuals interested in the social care network, Kmicinski said the first step is to complete a 12-question screening. That screening can be done online at wnyscn.org
or by visiting any of the network partners
Kmicinski said clients are assigned a navigator who will determine what services they are eligible for and then work with the client to get them connected to those resources
"The navigators are really that heart and soul of the whole service for the member," Kmicinski said
"They will be with them throughout the whole journey and make the various referrals
and make sure that the member is pleased with the service."

Buffalo has remaining needs at wide receiver
"Buffalo addressed cornerback in the first round of the draft with Kentucky’s Maxwell Hairston
but the depth behind the starters is concerning
A hamstring pull could put Buffalo’s secondary in a tough spot with Tre’Davious White potentially being the next man up
Cole Bishop and Damar Hamlin being one of the most underwhelming in the league
The WR criticism seems fair. While the Bills added a receiver post draft, taking a flyer on former second-round pick Elijah Moore
the team still lacks a bona fide WR1 on the boundary
As for the two perceived holes in the defensive backfield, Buffalo has given the impression that they are set at both safety and cornerback as OTAs unfold

177 overall selections to draft cornerbacks

Elaine Sciolino has some practical advice for first-time visitors to the Louvre: Never go on an empty stomach
She wasn't equipped with such knowledge when she visited for the first time while touring Europe on a budget in the summer of 1969
She was traveling with two Canisius College classmates
And that serendipity makes me love Elaine's new book all the more
noticed that she had written more about lunch with her dear friends than about their visit to the Louvre

Elaine knows that fortress turned palace turned museum with a singular intimacy
The same goes for her connection to its most famous resident
"We tread lightly with each other," Elaine says of the Mona Lisa
without all the protective glass and varnish that keeps us away from her
so we are left with an incomplete relationship
is a retired Paris bureau chief for the New York Times
She still lives there − an American in Paris
She is coming back to Buffalo on May 15 to talk about "Adventures in the Louvre" as part of the Larkin Square Authors Series
she plans to visit the Buffalo AKG Art Museum
"My mother had a 1952 powder-blue Plymouth
and she would pile us in and take us to the Albright-Knox," Elaine says
The new book is dedicated to her mother: "In memory of Jeannette Limeri Sciolino
Elaine's friendship with Kristin and Donna began when they worked on the Canisius student newspaper
Elaine would become a top editor of The Griffin
Elaine Sciolino could see the Niagara River from the living room of her family’s second-floor flat on Busti Avenue when she was growing up in Buffalo
Her father would tell her it was a view money can’t buy
The Peace Bridge loomed down the street and she often walked across it for ballet lessons in Fort Erie when she
I have learned to talk about anything with anybody," she writes
"from farmers and factory workers to presidents and kings
Elaine's mother schooled her early on about this notion of really seeing
She would ask her children to look hard at paintings by Géricault and Matisse and Monet at the Albright-Knox
"Look at ordinary things," her mother would say of the apples and knives of a still life
She covered the Middle East for Newsweek when she was the first American
She joined the Times in 1984 and covered beats such as the CIA and the United Nations before taking over the bureau in Paris
To be made a chevalier of the Legion of Honor is a high distinction of the French state; the award was established by Napoleon in 1802 for civic or military merit
France awarded it to Elaine in 2010 for her “special contribution” to the friendship of France and the United States
The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs By Elaine Sciolino Norton 294 pages
fine wine and locale for a half-mile stretch of street a Buffalo native calls home
In 2011 came her book "La Seduction: How the French Play the Game of Life." It is
"that rare book written by an American that French people could read to understand themselves."
Next came a pair of best sellers: 2015's "The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue Des Martyrs" and 2019's "The Seine: The River that Made Paris." (We told you about that one here.) "Adventures in the Louvre" completes what she calls her Paris trilogy
I wrote about a river and I wrote about a museum," she says
her river the Niagara and her museum the Albright-Knox
She hasn't been back since it reopened as the AKG
"I hope to come and see it in a different way," she says
"rediscovering a museum I have always loved."
“The Seine: The River That Made Paris,” was originally going to have a chapter about the Niagara
to have been titled “River of My Childhood.” “It just didn’t fit,” she says
“It’s hard to realize when you have to cut out so
forbidding place where she had an obligation to take visiting out-of-town friends
or for the crowds who always surrounded her
just a small painting of a silk merchant's wife
Elaine Sciolino poses with one of the Louvre's most famous residents
Elaine recently wrote a guest essay for the Wall Street Journal with the headline: "I Didn't Get the Fuss Over the Mona Lisa
and to the smile they call the most famous in the world
which is how she could charm a curator into allowing her that one-on-one with the one and only
Let's just say the Louvre is no longer purgatory for Elaine
and history to people who are interested in having a distraction from the incoming fire on this battleground that is our world today."
Which is not to say that Elaine is an expert in art history
There are already many books about the Louvre by people who are
She looks at the Louvre instead through the lens of a highly skilled journalist
My late sister earned a doctorate at the University of Toronto and became an authority on the short stories of Thomas Hardy
Donna earned a doctorate at Harvard University and became an authority on Elizabethan theater
Elaine writes in her book's introduction of remembering nothing about that first visit to the Louvre
but wishing she could claim she'd been moved by its majesty
"Kristin and Donna had studied art history with Thalia Feldman," Elaine says of the noted chair of the art-history program at Canisius
recently joined Elaine for another trip to the Louvre
but she was with us in spirit," Elaine says
"And she will always be a part of that extraordinary summer we had."
Elaine is currently on a cross-country book tour
in tandem with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd
her friend from their time as metro reporters at the newspaper 40 years ago
Dowd told the standing-room audience that her parents had a reproduction of the Mona Lisa in the home where she grew up
She asked Elaine if Mona is great art − or overrated
and she is overrated at the same time," Elaine answered
Then she told how the painting only achieved true worldwide fame when it was stolen in 1911
(The Times headline: "60 Detectives Seek Stolen 'Mona Lisa,' French Public Indignant.")
the Mona Lisa is famous for being famous − like the Kardashians
came when Robert Kardashian was one of O.J
Elaine's mother became a painter herself after her kids were grown
She took art courses at the University at Buffalo and the Chautauqua Institution and converted Elaine's childhood bedroom into an art studio
"I had a strained relationship with my mother
"I was going off being a foreign correspondent and doing these dangerous things
My mother delighted in teaching Gabriela how to paint."
Gabriela's eulogy included a story: "One time
I learned there was more to art than what you see at first glance
you must look at it hard and interpret it in different ways."
That reminded Elaine of the time when the painter Beauford Delaney showed the writer James Baldwin how to see more than the water in a puddle
a veneer of oil reflected a city streetscape
she lets us see − really see — the many treasures of the Louvre
