Where to Eat for Easter
First Bite: Bar Harmony
I love this picture of David Burley and Stephanie Shimp from the State Fair last year. It says so much in one captured slice of a full day tagging along with the Blue Plate founders on an August day of Blue Barn magic
Maybe Burley's one-armed lean gives the impression of ease but
having broken his foot right before the Fair
just the 12+ most insane days of business anyone can voluntarily take on even when you're at full strength
working in the mix and calling shots in his tall Aussie style
We lost Burley yesterday, in a motorcycle accident in Wisconsin
you may not recognize him or even know his name
he didn't become a social media personality to promote his restaurants
his most out-front action was designating a day to give other bald guys named David free food
he was that breed of restauranteur that was good at numbers and good at people
but he ran a tight ship and he was good for a laugh
it was hard not to be drawn in by his big smile
Burley would take up causes and fight for the industry as a whole
working behind the scenes to change outdated liquor laws and highlight small business challenges for lawmakers
He embodied the old restaurant adage: a high tide raises all boats
There's another thing I see in that photo above
Burley and Steph Shimp met as young servers at the Nicollet Island Inn
They fell in love and talked about the common dream of owning their own restaurant some day
the duo set a bar for the modern urban diner during the very beginning of the chef-driven restaurant boom
They created welcoming all-day spaces for neighborhoods
with food that was thoughtful and more exciting than just ham and eggs
What followed was the building of the Blue Plate collection
But along the way of building their company
They've spent decades creating spaces which offer hospitality to others
but there's always been a shared hospitality between them as well
I've seen it in casual conversations and intense exchanges alike
but when you find someone who acts as a balancing force
They've cared for their business and each other's families as they've both grown and changed over the years
who must now find new footing with the loss of one of their guiding forces
All Blue Plate restaurants are closed today

Burley voters will decide on a levy aimed at supporting the city's public library for the next two years
"This levy has been in place for the last 16 years
so this will be our eighth time running this type of levy to help support the library," said Tayce Robinson
voters will see this item on the ballot once again in May
The proposed override levy seeks to cover 61% of the public library's operational costs
RELATED: Idaho Voter Election Guide: May 2025
the levy passes with strong community support for library programs
'The library is the heart of the community.' I like to flip that and say our community is the heart of the library," Robinson said
The library operates on two separate levies: a permanent levy and this recurring override levy
Tayce Robinson explained that while the permanent levy keeps the lights on
the override levy adds the library’s heart and soul
which funds staff to ensure we provide the best services possible," Robinson added
"It also gives us the wonderful opportunity to provide job experience for high school students in the area
and other technologies that help us function."
the levy would cost homeowners just under $28 each year for every $100,000 of taxable assessed value
the cost each month is approximately $2.33," Robinson explained
"Most homes are valued a little higher than that
This figure is based on the home's taxable value
Most people in Burley that I spoke with expressed their love for the library
but voiced concerns about the current economy
describing it as an additional burden on taxpayers
"The main issue is that the economy hasn't fully recovered here in Burley,” said Eugene Soulsby
This adds another financial consideration for your budget
and I think for right now that would be an influence to say no."
While some residents question the added expense
significant cuts could affect what the library offers
Jordan Mendoza and her four children emphasized how essential the library is
We are very fortunate for that," Mendoza said

died in a motorcycle crash Sunday in Wisconsin involving a suspected drunken driver
“David was the heart and soul of Blue Plate — a visionary leader and a joyful generous spirit who made everyone feel welcome,” read a social media post from the restaurant group. “Since opening our first restaurant in 1993, David’s energy, creativity and kindness have shaped everything we are today.”
The crash occurred about 2:45 p.m. Sunday on westbound Interstate 94 near Hudson and just east of the Minnesota border, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The driver of a car in the right lane “attempted to overtake traffic by using the right shoulder,” a patrol statement read. The car hit a guardrail, veered back into the right lane and collided with Burley’s motorcycle, the statement continued.
Both the car and the motorcycle crashed into a concrete median barrier, the statement read.
Emergency medical responders took Burley to a nearby hospital, where he died.
A state trooper’s inventory of the clothing Burley had on at the time of the crash listed a helmet with a full face covering, a nylon motorcycle jacket, blue jeans, and motorcycle gloves and boots, according to the criminal complaint.
The car’s driver, identified by the patrol as Andre Lamont Mathews, 33, of Brooklyn Park was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for treatment of noncritical injuries.
On Monday, Mathews was charged in St. Croix County Circuit Court with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. The criminal complaint said the trooper collected a sample of Mathews’ blood to test for his degree of intoxication. Results of that test are pending.
Mathews’ criminal history in Minnesota includes convictions for felony drugs and driving without insurance. In Wisconsin, he was convicted last year for going 17 miles per hour over the speed limit on a freeway.
Burley and Shimp first met at the Nicollet Island Inn, where both were servers. The two dreamt of what their version of a neighborhood restaurant would be. They realized it in 1993, when they spotted a classified ad in the Star Tribune.
The Highland Grill opened with a mix of modern menu items like sweet potato fries, classics the two loved, like pierogis, and a dedication to great breakfast food. The restaurant was a hit and eventually unlocked Blue Plate’s key to sustained success of balancing neighborhood restaurant needs with modern comforts.
Burley was a small-business advocate, helping to change Edina’s liquor laws around happy hours and serving on the Minnesota Restaurant Association and the 50th & France Business and Professional Association. The native of Perth, Australia, was also not above poking a little fun at his own expense, promoting a Bald and Free Day at Blue Plate restaurants.
Burley and Shimp were married from 1995 to 1998, but retained 50-50 ownership of the business.
“My heart is absolutely broken by the devastating news of David’s passing,” Shimp said in a statement. “Losing him so suddenly is overwhelming — a painful shock that has left me and our entire Blue Plate family grieving a loss too deep for words. David’s passion and kindness were the foundation of everything we built together. We will profoundly miss his spirit, energy and irreplaceable presence.”

If the isle of Aeternum is known for anything
the island itself is the grandest mystery of all – located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean
While people from seemingly all ages and regions find their way here eventually
so too do many of the animals native to each corner of the Earth
it is highly likely that adventurers have encountered most of them
Aenwyn has been raising much ado throughout the settlements (even as far north as the outposts of Shattered Mountain) about a “Grate Discovery To Rival All Known Discoverys”
the volume of her voice does make this pronouncement intriguing
110 KB
She has supposedly seen not one hippopotamus
but rather myriad hippopotamuses of every shape and size roaming freely the island
and – dare we say – pique an interest most profoundly
Even saying the word feels a kind of magic after listening to one of her presentations
Within those five syllables is contained a bizarre and majestic world that may
outshine what strange things have already been chronicled in Aeternum
after leaving her talk in a huff when she refused to answer even basic questions from the audience:
“That just sounds like a bear!”
166 KB
As well as: “Is she actually even a doctor
and is it from an accredited institution at all?”
You may spy her out in the fields of Everfall
or squatting atop a dune in Brimstone Sands with the most curiously pensive expression imaginable
as-yet undiscovered breed of hippopotamus over yonder
pursuing her dream again with a passion that – if it cannot truly be understood – can certainly be appreciated
This will surely be a lifelong quest for the good doctor
but the mystery of hippos on Aeternum may never truly be solved in even our eternal lifetimes

I can bearly believe we found one in just under 1,000 days
Continue your adventurers across Aeternum with your very own Hippo Burley mount
We had to ask ourselves how to take this fun idea and blend it into the style and look of New World: Aeternum
That kernel led us to have a little extra fun with this mount
I hope it will bring a smile to your face (as it does for us) when you're running around on a giant bear in a hippo costume
183 KB
We were looking to hit something entertaining and ridiculous with the hippo bear design
We explored a few different stylized options before trying a couple costumed ideas
as we wanted to push the comedy and turn this item into something players would really get a kick out of putting on their mount
In the end we settled on a costume made of stuffed
that would sit awkwardly on the bear but not obscure it

Where will your search for hippos take you next
Thanks for your support and we’ll see you in Aeternum

Idaho — The Burley Public Library held a special ribbon cutting on Thursday
officially kickstarting the construction on a half-million-dollar expansion project
we want to build our community; one step at a time
or one page at a time,” said director of the Burley Public Library Tayce Robinson
the city of Burley has been looking to upgrade the aging library
but those funds never really came to fruition
who applied for a $500,000 grant through the Idaho Commission of Public Libraries for facility improvements
we were one of three libraries in the state that got the full $500,000 to do a project of this scale," said Robinson
A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday helped officially kick off construction
The new 1,900 square foot expansion will feature new bathrooms
it's all a dream come true; excited about the impact this significant upgrade will have on the future
"It's exciting to be able to help and serve our community more; be able to provide more resources
so that they have a safe place to be to learn and grow and experience new things," added Robinson
Jodie Beck is a board member of the Burley Public Library Foundation
She explains this expansion is the culmination of years of hard work
but the many before her — including her mother
this is actually a very emotional day for me
My mother was a librarian and English teacher for 40 years for Cassia County
so reading and libraries are in my personal blood,” said Jodie Beck
the library will remain open as much as possible
fighting tooth and nail to continue providing services to the community
so we will have our summer reading events over at Storybook Park
we will still try to have curbside pick-up so they can get their books and other resources that we have," said Robinson
Work on the expansion will get underway in April and is expected to be complete by the summer of 2026
