A fire broke out in the attic of a single-family home in Burtonsville
the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service ( MCFRS) said
Firefighters responded to the 3400 block of Greencastle Road
between Columbia Pike and Old Columbia Pike
according to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer
they saw smoke coming from the roof and discovered the fire in the attic
Piringer said on X that the cause of the fire was accidental
Investigators believe it was caused by heat from electrical sanders used on the roof
which ignited combustibles inside the wood soffit
The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damages

Police said a Silver Spring man has been charged with home invasion and assaults over the past week targeting elderly women in Burtonsville and White Oak
Devin Jones, 34, is charged with home invasion, attempted first-degree rape, first-degree assault, indecent exposure, second-degree assault, and theft, according to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD)
Last Saturday an 88-year-old woman in the 3700 block of Greencastle Road reported that a man forced his way into her home
physically assaulted her and tried to sexually assault her before stealing an item and leaving
a 77-year-old woman in the 1500 block of November Circle reported that a male suspect came into her bedroom and exposed himself
She fought back and tried to call the police but he took her phone before leaving
with help from the police department’s Forensic Science Evidence Management Division
identified Jones as the suspect in both crimes
He was apprehended around Stewart Lane and Lockwood Drive in White Oak
He had items belonging to both victims upon his arrest
Police said detectives are investigating additional burglaries that might be linked to Jones. Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Thursday
37-year-old Michelle Gogan of Burtonsville
was hit by a car in the parking lot of the Giant Food store located in the 15000 block of Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville
3rd District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel were dispatched to the location for the report of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian
The investigation has revealed that Gogan was getting out of the passenger side of her parked vehicle when she was struck by a 2023 silver Mazda CX5
The driver of the Mazda was attempting to enter an adjoining parking stall when she struck Gogan
The driver of the Mazda remained at the scene
Gogan was transported to an area hospital where she later died of her injuries. This is an active and ongoing investigation, and CRU detectives are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call (240) 773-6620.”

between route 198 and Briggs Chaney Rd in Burtonsville
has displaced three adults and several pets

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation
In a separate incident on the unit block of Oak Avenue in Gaithersburg
firefighters responded to a blaze at a single-family home at around 1:30 a.m
MCFRS personnel located and rescued one occupant from the residence
An adult male was transported with life-threatening injuries
Approximately 50 firefighters were on the scene
