Sabres.com will be recapping each player’s performance with all the numbers
quotations and content that tell the story of their 2024-25 season
Byram was all things for the Sabres as he took on the heaviest workload of his young career
He was a defensively reliable partner for Rasmus Dahlin
with whom he spent over 600 minutes at 5-on-5
Their plus-20 goal differential in those minutes was tied as the best by any pair in the NHL
matched only by Colorado's Cale Makar and Devon Toews
He was, when needed, a physical combatant, like when he fought Red Wings forward Dominik Shine during a tension-filled game in Detroit on March 13. And he was a willing shot blocker, tied for the team lead with 116 (including the block to seal Buffalo’s win on the night of Rob Ray’s induction into the Sabres Hall of Fame)
Despite all of those duties – plus regular roles on the power play and the penalty kill – Byram managed to play all 82 games
His career-high in total ice time (1,861:10) ranked 20th among NHL players
“I’ve been lucky enough to come in and get a really good opportunity and play important minutes and meaningful minutes and I’ve really enjoyed that,” Byram said
“I’ve taken some strides in my game and I’ll continue to try to improve and determined to be the best version of myself as possible.”

I look at our team and I do think that we should be playing the next few days in a playoff series
We have a great group of guys in the dressing room
and we’re all trying to figure this thing out together
But I know that everyone’s committed to trying to figure this out and that’s what we’re going to try and do.” – Byram on his assessment of the Sabres’ season during his end-of-year press conference
Byram is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer
The length of his next deal – be it a long-term contract or short-term bridge – will be determined based on conversations early this offseason
“I think Bo had an excellent season,” general manager Kevyn Adams said
“He’s a Stanley Cup champion at a very young age and extremely talented and when we traded for him (in March 2024)
We were willing to kind of make that bet and say
really good hockey player and see how it shakes out.’
and we’re going to start to talk about that now as we get into the offseason
but I guess what I would say is he’s a really good player and we’ll be open to anything.”
Byram was asked during his end-of-season press conference whether he could envision himself in Buffalo long-term
“We have a great crew of guys in the locker room and a lot of great players
It’s tough when things don’t work out in terms of success for the team
We’ll regroup and come back next season ready to go
I think I’ll talk to my camp and talk to Kevyn and we’ll figure out what the next step is
Kevyn’s great to work with and very communicative of what he wants and what he thinks is best for myself and the team.”
Vicksburg Junior High School boy’s basketball team secured a 54-30 win over Byram Middle School on Thursday
led the Gators with 17 points and Corbin Walker came in clutch with 10
Jaquez Jones brought in 12 assists to go with his seven points while Jalen Stewart put up nine
Jordan Cruthirds added five on the board while Jaden Stewart put up four and Cole Nolan ended the night with two points

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Bowen Byram needed a place to stay
And Cozens was happy to have the company at his downtown condo
Byram added some excitement to Buffalo’s lineup
He scored in his first Sabres game and then had a two-goal outing in his third game
His smooth skating and offensive instincts stood out right away
Byram needed time to adjust to new coaching points
In 18 games with the Sabres at the end of last season
Byram’s on-ice expected goal share at five-on-five was 40 percent
the Sabres have scored 60 percent of the goals with him on the ice at five-on-five and no Buffalo player has been on the ice for more of their even-strength goals
“I still think Bo has more for sure,” said Sabres forward Peyton Krebs
“He’s shown what he can do and has a lot more to gain
What separates him is just his confidence to make plays
This is a much better picture of the player general manager Kevyn Adams hoped he was getting when he traded Mittelstadt
Buffalo’s leading scorer at the time of the deal
Adams viewed Byram as the top-four defenseman for whom he’d long been searching
He urged then-coach Don Granato to put him on the top pair right away
and Granato eventually moved Byram off that pair
and the Sabres have 54 percent of the expected goals at five-on-five when Byram and Dahlin play together
the Sabres have 57 percent of shot attempts and are outscoring teams 10-4 when that pair is on the ice
The next question the Sabres will have to answer is exactly where Byram fits into the big picture of their plan. It still feels like Byram has more to give, as evidenced by the 43 percent on-ice expected goal share when he’s not playing with Dahlin. His next contract is tricky. Stylistically, he’s not dramatically different from Dahlin and Owen Power
both of whom already have long-term contracts and are ahead of Byram in the pecking order on the power play
Byram might be getting enough power-play opportunities to boost his value
With Dahlin getting $11 million per season and Power signed for just over $8 million per year
how much is Adams going to be willing to pay Byram
He knew he had old friends that would make the locker room transition an easy one
but he’s also enjoying Buffalo for Buffalo’s sake
He’s from a small British Columbia town near the border with Alberta and still lives there in the summertime
“I feel like you have that here,” Byram said
You go to some places on the road and you’re in traffic all day
I’m lucky to not have to deal with that here
You never really know what you’re getting into when you go somewhere new
but I’ve loved it here so far to be honest with you.”
Krebs isn’t surprised by how much Byram’s embraced Buffalo
As long as he’s got his brothers around him
Not every player in the league would be all in on playing in Buffalo
who has already won the Stanley Cup and was playing for a winning team in Colorado
No team has been out of the playoffs longer than the Sabres have
and Western New York doesn’t have the glamorous weather or low-income taxes that attract NHL veterans
a player who loved playing for the Sabres and seemed willing to stick around
it was critical he got back a player who would embrace playing for the Sabres
“He knows what winning feels like and he wants that again,” Cozens said
“He wants so bad for us to be a successful and winning team
He’s helped a lot and shown us what it takes to win
He wants to be part of the solution and help us take the next step.”
Krebs told reporters that the defenseman was “the definition of a beauty.” He’s lived up to that
cracking jokes and quickly becoming one of the people in the room whose teammates love being around
“Colorado definitely lost a gem and we gained one,” Krebs said
The pressure of being a top-five draft pick or one of the pieces of a major trade doesn’t register because he doesn’t live online reading what’s said about him
The only pressure that has crept in at all is what comes with this being a contract year
“People that don’t admit to that or don’t say that are probably lying in my opinion
it’s where your spouse is living most of the time
I just try to stay present in the moment and enjoy what I’m doing and enjoy the people you’re doing it with.”
Byram will play his former team for the first time since the trade
When you get drafted in the top five and win the Stanley Cup with that franchise
you don’t think much about playing anywhere else
But now he’s started to picture what it might be like for Buffalo to be the place he stays for a while
“It’s something I’ve thought about a lot,” Byram said
that’s not really up to me in a lot of circumstances
I’m more so focused on playing hockey and playing at my best
it’s always kind of in your head when you’re on an expiring deal
I love it here and don’t have anything negative to say

Your submissions on our “who says no?” mailbag featured some farfetched ideas
more feasible options and even a few jokes
The New York Rangers would certainly say yes to that proposition
Let’s look into some suggestions and why they might or (in most cases) might not work
(Note: Submissions have been reformatted and lightly edited for clarity and length.)
The Rangers would be getting the much older player with the more expensive cap hit who has worse offensive production the past two years and plays worse defense
Chris Drury better hang up before Kyle Dubas finishes the offer
noted in his proposal that this would be a bet that the Jets won’t be as good in 2025-26 as they are this year
so the 2026 pick could end up being in the top 50
That would mean a pretty steep drop-off in Winnipeg
but the point remains that they probably won’t be back-to-back Presidents’ Trophy winners
Plus the Jets have a 2026 second-round pick and don’t have one in 2025
The Rangers would be smart to do this deal
When the Jets acquired Tyler Toffoli last year
it cost a 2025 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick
Toffoli was in the midst of his second consecutive 30-goal season
His value is probably somewhere between what Toffoli and Jack Roslovic fetched last year
Roslovic cost the Rangers a fourth-round pick to acquire
If the market is similar this season, a third-round pick feels like a fair acquisition cost for Smith
Winnipeg probably would not want to give up a second but could perhaps part with a third if looking for more forward depth
He was elite during the 2022 playoffs for the Colorado Avalanche
He tied Connor McDavid and Gabriel Landeskog for the highest plus-minus that postseason
most of which took place before his 21st birthday
The defenseman comes with injury questions because of his early-career concussion issues
but he hasn’t had one since the 2021-22 season
The Avalanche traded Byram to the Sabres last deadline
The 23-year-old has already tied his career high in points this season (29) and is playing 23:10 a night
too: colleague Dom Luszczyszyn’s model has him at a positive rating on both offense and defense this season
he’s a pending restricted free agent after the season
Owen Power and Mattias Samuelsson signed through at least 2029-30
All three of those players are left-shot defensemen
Dahlin and Samuelsson are both playing on the right
but coach Lindy Ruff has said multiple times this season that it’s not ideal having lefties play together
Buffalo could recoup other quality pieces by trading Byram and avoid committing long-term to a defensive group that could have an all-lefty top four
That makes me think Buffalo would say no to this deal
It would essentially be swapping restricted free agents and getting back a player who doesn’t solve their redundancies
Byram is a year younger and performing better this season
even if he has never logged as many points (43) as Miller did in 2022-23
Commenter Jimbo suggested a different Byram trade
this one revolving around Braden Schneider with
“picks or mid-tier prospects to balance it out.” That could be more appealing to Buffalo
assuming New York is the team adding to the deal
has never consistently been on a top pair like Byram this year
but he’s a big righty with promising defensive tools
The feasibility of that trade would come down to what else the Rangers would be willing to part with
Buffalo has leverage — it doesn’t have to trade Byram — and if the Sabres demanded a first-round pick
the Rangers would likely have a hard time doing that
considering they are giving up either this or next year’s first in the J.T
New York also doesn’t have second-round picks in any of the next three drafts
and Buffalo probably wouldn’t be moved too much by a third
a reminder that the Rangers would have to acquire a second-round pick to make this happen
We’ve already established that Byram is a quality player
is in the midst of a career-best year with 14 goals and 30 points
and the Sabres don’t have great depth up the middle
so he’d be a difficult player with which to part
But the Rangers have a sub-50 percent expected goal rate with all four other lines that include Lafrenière and have played at least 20 five-on-five minutes this season
That has to be at least a little concerning to a team like Buffalo if it is considering parting with a strong defenseman and reliable middle-six center
Even if he’s receptive to waiving it — a big ‘if’ — a Utah (formerly Arizona) franchise that hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2020 bubble does not seem like it would be one of his preferred destinations
You don’t want any tampering allegations against your name
I realize this is an overly simplistic way to look at a Brady Tkachuk trade
but let’s look back at what the Calgary Flames got for his brother
who also received a 2025 fourth-round pick
Cole Schwindt and a conditional 2025 first-round pick
Huberdeau was coming off a 115-point season and Weegar had appeared on Norris ballots the previous two seasons
Lafrenière and Miller are younger with team control but at this point don’t rise to that level of player
Matthew had over 100 points his last year in Calgary — a plateau Brady has never reached — and was a restricted free agent
Brady would come with three-plus years of team control at an $8.2 million average annual value — extra valuable considering the projected cap spikes
the package Calgary received is indicative of what a superstar-level player costs
Ottawa has repeatedly said it does not want to trade Tkachuk
and the Senators should be in no rush to given their positioning in the standings and their captain’s contract
then send the proposal to Crosby just so he could veto it with his no-movement clause for good measure
Jones has been a frequent healthy scratch on a team currently outside of a playoff spot
Spence is a promising young player with team control on a good Western Conference team bound for the postseason
considering how little Peter Laviolette has used him this year
I realize Zegras has dealt with injuries and has underperformed the past two seasons
but he’s still only 23 and has a pair of 60-plus point seasons to his name
If the Rangers are going to trade for someone like him
Edström is the only one who looks like a sure-thing NHLer
and that is most likely in a fourth-line role
This is a far more palatable deal for the Ducks
so much so that I think the Rangers say no
Brendan added some commentary with his proposal
writing that Zegras and Miller are two players who “hit it big at a young age
have stagnated and could do with a change in scenery.” He also suggested that
they trade Brennan Othmann for a defenseman to replace Miller
Even if he has not reached the highs of his 2022-23 season
he’s still capable of playing nearly 22 minutes a night on a top or second pair
Acquiring someone like that will cost more than Othmann
Vancouver had to give up a first-round pick to get Marcus Pettersson in January
also has his doubts from Anaheim’s perspective
“If the Ducks were in real need of a left-shot defenseman or were lacking someone of Miller’s profile in their system
I could buy them taking a shot in a one-for-one,” he said
“But they’ve seen Jackson LaCombe take off this season and still have fellow youngsters Pavel Mintyukov and Olen Zellweger who need to be playing consistent NHL minutes.”
could be enough to pry a second-round pick from Tampa Bay
The one wild card is Sheary having a 16-team no-trade list
That likely wouldn’t be an issue if he saw more NHL opportunity in New York than he’s had in Tampa Bay
where he’s played only five NHL games this season

Ryan Johnson will have hindsight on his side when the time comes for him to join the Buffalo Sabres’ lineup
an opportunity that could be nearing after Johnson was recalled for the first time this season on Thursday
Johnson practiced Sunday on a defense pair with Bowen Byram as captain Rasmus Dahlin remained sidelined
who has been out since leaving last Tuesday’s game with back spasms
was called upon to play 41 games for the Sabres last season as a first-year pro following a four-year collegiate career with the University of Minnesota
It was an early introduction to the professional habits and day-in
day-out intensity that come with professional hockey
“Every game is huge for every team,” Johnson said
the way some of the guys here work on extra things
It seems like it is next level in terms of preparation and just that pro attitude
The stint also offered a glimpse of the success Johnson can experience at the NHL level
The Sabres outscored opponents 22-17 when he was on the ice at 5-on-5 and owned a 52.5-percent share of shot attempts – the second-best mark among Sabres defensemen last season
Johnson had seven assists of his own and averaged 13:52 of ice time
Buffalo added a physical dimension to its D corps this offseason with the signing of Dennis Gilbert
which – along with the trade for Bowen Byram at last year’s deadline – gave the team eight veterans on the roster to open the season
Johnson started the year in Rochester as a result
where the organization had high hopes for the 23-year-old
“He should be the best rush defender in the American Hockey League if that’s where he ends up,” Rochester assistant coach Nathan Paetsch said this summer
… He should dominate games and never actually have to defend because nobody gets through the neutral zone against him.”
Johnson has made good on his coaches’ expectations to start this season
homing on his defensive games as he played heavy minutes for the Amerks
His plus-5 rating is tied for the best mark among Rochester defensemen
“Just being able to use my body more to box guys out
Definitely learning more of how to do that
Jordan Greenway was a full participant in the skate and has not been ruled out for Monday’s game against Detroit
Greenway has missed the last 10 games with a middle-body injury
Five players rotated in on Greenway’s line on Sunday
beginning with Jiri Kulich at center and Dylan Cozens on the wing
JJ Peterka and Jack Quinn also took repetitions on the line
After emphasizing the small details following Saturday’s loss to Utah
the Sabres went to work on execution during Sunday’s practice
Ruff challenged players to make correct reads offensively on rush drills and coached one drill from the along the offensive blue line
a point of emphasis after offside entries proved costly against Utah
so was the energy out of a group that is looking to work its way out of an 0-4-2 stretch
during which Johnson earned a hearty cheer from teammates for scoring on a backhand attempt
The team crowded around Mattias Samuelsson after he scored to end the drill
“We have a stretch right now of probably five games every second day
kind of thing,” forward Beck Malenstyn said
“And it really does you no good to dwell on a mistake
“I think [Ruff] does a great job of that – we address the issues
and it allows the guys to be able to turn the page
Malenstyn was asked after practice about his second-period fight with Utah defenseman Michael Kesselring
clean hit from Malenstyn on Kesselring along the end boards
one of seven hits Malenstyn was credited with in the loss
“There’s moments in games where things happen,” he said
I wasn’t overly concerned with having to answer the bell for it
and just wanted to turn the tides with some energy
“I would say fighting as a whole in the game has gotten to a pretty manageable point
so it’s going to happen every once in a while

Congress has passed water infrastructure funding legislation that includes $35 million for water projects in Mississippi
as well as Hancock County are each getting $7 million under the Water Resources Development Act.
He says this federal money will help support the construction of much-needed wells and a water tank
"This new grant is going to open the door for us to move on,” White said
The city's water infrastructure is owned by Jackson
and Byram has suffered water woes for decades alongside the capital city
White says this arrangement has only grown more frustrating for Byram residents as their system has continued to degrade and Jackson's ownership of it prevents Byram from doing maintenance work itself
My people are very capable of fixing water pipes
“But ifwe go by something and we see a pipe that we got the stuff in the truck to fix
we cannot do it because it's their property
Byram offered Jackson $5 million in early 2023 to buy itself out of the water contract
but White says Jackson leaders have never seriously considered the offer
The well and tower construction is part of a years-long plan to get Byram off Jackson's water system and build its own
something White says he's committed to seeing before he leaves office.
“I can call ten people on my phone that are citizens and every one of them would have a complaint about the water,” White said
“Every one of us have been touched by water
That’s why I’m running for four more years because I got this water situation
I’m going to finish that before I get out.”
White says if Jackson won't sell Byram's water system back to them
the city will likely sue Jackson for control through the condemnation legal process.
PLEASANTVILLE – If someone stopped by Parkway Field for a few minuted of Friday’s first quarter
they might have put a mental “W” next to Byram Hills after the Bobcats seemed to take control
Pleasantville took advantage of Byram Hills penalties early in the game and went on to a 28-7 romp in a Class B quarterfinal football game
Byram Hills’ Mike Bordoni ran 57 yards up the middle for a touchdown
Then Bobcats speedstar Tyler Marsescot vaulted over a Pleasantville player during a nine-yard run to the Pleasantville 43
Then came an intentional grounding penalty
A short punt gave Pleasantville the ball on the Byram Hills 41
the Panthers had knotted the game as quarterback Mason Rizzi hit Brian McPhee on a crossing pattern and McPhee broke a tackle en route to a 25-yard touchdown
That would be the first of four Panthers touchdowns as fourth-seeded Pleasantville
which dropped a regular-season game to fifth-seeded Byram Hills just two weeks earlier
which got a huge game from senior Louis Sdao
who scored twice and was also big defensively
will face top-seeded Westlake in next week's semifinals
Play of the gameByram Hills came within an inch or so of a 47-yard
second-quarter touchdown when Aidan Padley's pass
which traveled more than 50 yards in the air
deflected off Marescot's outstretched hand as he ran in vain to try to catch up with the throw
That proved to be Byram Hills' last good chance of scoring
Pleasantville's second-half defense was outstanding
After a Pleasantville drive ended with a fumble at the Bobcats 21 with Evan Petta recovering
Nick Reich's takedown of Marescot for a six-yard loss ended up leading to a Bobcat punt from their own 15
The kick had some distance and should have given Pleasantville possession in its own territory
But it hit the back of the helmet of a Byram Hills' player
giving the Panthers possession at the Bobcats 40
Sdao then did what he did for most of the game
His first carry after the punt went for 12 yards
who looked trapped around the line of scrimmage
emerged from a scrum of players to break out to the right
He went in on the next play and Joe Sokich drilled his second of four PATs
That occurred with 3:49 still left in the third quarter -- a virtual lifetime in a seven point game
Pleasantville forced Byram Hills to punt on its next possession — a three and out
the Panthers marched 22 yards to the Bobcats 30 via three Sdao carries as the third quarter closed
Two more Sdao carries put the ball on the Bobcat 18 and then running back David Hundzynski took a direct snap
faked a handoff and went 10 yards to the 8
Hundzynski bulled his way into the end zone from there
The kick made it a 21-7 game with 10:35 left in the fourth quarter
Byram Hills still wasn't out of it and with the help of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Pleasantville on the kickoff return
the Bobcats marched into Panther territory
But a holding penalty negated Joe DeGrazzia's run of about nine yards off a pitch to the Pleasantville 35 and a couple of plays later
on a fourth-and-20 from the Byram Hills 45
the Bobcats went for it but a long Padley pass fell incomplete with Marescot claiming pass interference but not getting the call
Pleasantville subsequently sealed the game with the help of a trick play
50-plus-yard halfback option connection between Hundzynski and Aidan Cotter called back early in the third quarter
were facing a third-and-nine from the Byram Hills 44 when Reich took the handoff
Bordoni was the Bobcats' leading ground gainer but 57 of his 75 yards on eight carries came on that one TD run
And while Padley displayed great arm strength
the Panthers' coverage down field and its ability to create drops by crushing receivers just as they touched the ball
We made some mistakes on both sides of the ball," Byram Hills coach Simon Berk said
pointing in part to costly penalties and dropped passes
"But I'm immensely proud our kids continued to fight."
Pleasantville coach Tony Becerra noted Sdao had a costly fumble in the Panthers' recent 26-22 loss to the Bobcats
noting his senior plays with a lot of pride
He attributed his performance Friday to "sheer will."
Sdao said of Pleasantville's improved play as the game progressed
in always being strong for four quarters."
since it was his last game at Parkway Field
since almost everyone plays on artificial turf these days and Parkway provides clouds of dust and grass stains
He noted he'd played on the field as a young kid
To come out on top in our last game at Parkway is a feeling like no other," Sdao said

A Byram Township police officer shot a woman armed with a handgun during a crisis negotiation in a wooded area within a Boy Scout reservation on Monday
Byram police officers responded to a 911 call around 3:30 p.m
to the intersection of Wheeler Road and Camp Allamuchy Road where they found a woman alone in a parked vehicle
according to a joint release from the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey State Police
and officers made attempts to "deescalate the situation" with the help of a crisis negotiator
the occupant exited the vehicle," officials said
adding that the "occupant was struck once by police fire."
The woman's handgun was discharged during the encounter and was later recovered
Officers provided medical treatment to the woman at the scene before she was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center
where she was in stable condition as of late Tuesday afternoon
Officers involved in the incident were taken to Newton Medical Center for evaluation and treatment
Officials did not immediately release the woman's name or the names of the officers involved
Officials say all firearms were secured at the scene by the New Jersey State Police Crime Scene North Unit
and "no items were attached to the roof" of the vehicle
debunking prior reports by other media outlets
The shooting occurred within the 1,000-acre Mt
Allamuchy Boy Scout Reservation and is home to Camp Wheeler and Camp Somers
which offers summer camps and year-round camping

Bowen Byram is a star on the rise in the NHL
it appears as though his next deal may pay him an immense amount
This season has been an immensely underwhelming one for the Buffalo Sabres
with the team once again expected to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs
extending their NHL longest drought to 15 years
they'll have some big time decisions to make too
with the team needing to decide whether to trade him
give him a qualifying offer or look to lock him down for the long-term
The 23-year old was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline a season ago
he's already put up a career high in points at 29
he's finally putting the production behind it too
numbers are being thrown around for his next contract
with Sabres Insider Mike Harrington predicting that it could be one of the biggest contracts in the NHL for a blue liner
Harrington predicts that it could 'run past $9 million AAV'
with that number potentially making him just one of 12 defenseman to earn over the $9 million mark per season
Byram's current contract pays him $3.85 million per season
but with the production finally improving and the 23-year old looking like a genuine top-four pairing defenseman in the NHL
he's likely looking to get paid in a big way
Whether or not he stays in Buffalo on his next deal is yet to be seen
and it's likely to make him one of the highest paid blue liners in the league

“Another new spot,” Reimer said with a smile
showing potential that has matched his hype as a prospect
When the Sabres broke up their practice groups at the start of training camp
Luukkonen and Levi were the two goalies skating with the NHL group while Reimer was with the second practice group that consisted mostly of AHLers and prospects
That puts Reimer in a position where his path to playing time isn’t guaranteed
Early indications at training camp point to Levi being the backup to open the season
Lindy Ruff has indicated he thinks he will need two goalies playing closer to an even split
so it’s not a lock that Luukkonen will approach 55 starts like he did a year ago
If Levi is ready to handle more NHL time this season
that represents a best case scenario for the Sabres
That’s also what made him a necessary addition for Buffalo
If Levi is still not ready for full-time NHL action or if one of Levi or Luukkonen misses time due to injury
having an experienced goalie like Reimer is a nice insurance plan
I love this position and I love working and trying to get better
Even this year I was making tweaks to my game to try to make myself faster
I had a really good summer and feel really good about my game right now with some of the adjustments I made
My mindset has never really been to ride it out and let it go
It’s to get better and to win hockey games and help my teammates
Reimer knows he’s not likely to catch anyone on staff by surprise in training camp considering he has a decade and a half of NHL experience
The bigger variable for his role is how well the other two goalies play and whether they stay healthy
Reimer has just focused on trying to fit into a new city and locker room
He said he’s struck by the friendliness of his Buffalo neighbors and how it seems everyone is trying to help each other
He’s sensed a similar feel in the locker room
A few of his new teammates reached out over the summer
and Levi said he already struck up a friendship with Reimer during the offseason
“The thing that sticks out is the excitement to get going,” Reimer said of his new team
“This team has been sniffing for a couple of years now
I think everyone is collectively ready to bring their ‘A’ game
And that’s an exciting time to be part of an organization.”
Here are some more takeaways from Buffalo’s early stretch of training camp
which included a scrimmage on Friday morning
Sabres were broken up into two teams which each featured three lines
Ruff said Dahlin skated on his own Friday and is getting closer to returning to team practices
a lot of the NHL roster will play in Buffalo’s first two preseason games on Saturday and Monday
Ruff said he thought Byram was the best player on the ice during the scrimmage
He and Power controlled the play when they were on the ice
created a few chances in the offensive zone and was smooth breaking the puck out of his own end
He could end up being one of the biggest beneficiaries of the improved defensive structure under Ruff
And that’s where he’s spent the entirety of the early portion of camp
He scored by beating Reimer clean with a perfect shot during the scrimmage
He looks like he’s ready to pick up where he left off last season when he scored 28 goals
Ruff said he saw a “dynamic” scorer when he watched clips of Peterka’s games from last season
“You’ve got another guy on that line that can be just as dangerous if the coverage goes to Thompson or Tuch,” Ruff said
6. Konsta Helenius has not been practicing with the top group at the start of training camp
but he did get to take part in the scrimmage on Friday and scored the first goal
He also just missed scoring on another shot
The biggest thing missing from his game is the strength that should naturally come with age
but Helenius plays such a calm game for someone so young
His competitiveness didn’t waver on Friday even against the NHL roster
“For a guy that young to carry himself as well as he has when it comes to the physical part of the game
knowing where to be and some of the puck battles against bigger men have been really good puck battles,” Ruff said
“I’m impressed with his overall play for being 18 years old.”
Ruff attributed that less to the new defensive systems in place and more to the players having the attention to detail and focus away from the puck
Ruff noticed some frustration from the offensive players
Conditioning is clearly a point of emphasis for Ruff
After a lengthy scrimmage that included overtime and a shootout
Ruff had the team do extra sprints down the length of the ice
He’s also punished players with pushups and sprints at other points of practices
He’s not going to let poor habits or conditioning be an excuse for this team
10. Peyton Krebs appears to be the 13th forward on the depth chart early on
He has rotated in on the fourth line during practice but was on the outside looking in at the top four lines during the scrimmage
Ruff said he has liked Krebs’ work ethic early in camp but that he’s among the Sabres players who need to take better care of the puck
“It’s probably one of the issues that we have to put our arms around because we still gave up some big chances on just poor puck decisions,” Ruff said
“He’s inside that group that sometimes tries too many high-risk or one-on-one type plays
but holding the puck in an area that’s really dangerous and giving up a high-danger opportunity.”
